Arsenal passed the test posed by the absence of Bukayo Saka , but it was not by flying colours. Saka has become synonymous with the Mikel Arteta era at Arsenal - a homegrown near ever-present on the right wing, a super-consistent performer who has swung so many games in his side's favour. He was always going to be a big miss when the news of his hamstring injury was confirmed, especially given the Gunners' open-play struggles with Saka still in the side. The low block set up by Ipswich Town was therefore a good first test for Arsenal with their talisman resting on the sidelines. Taken at face value, it was a success: Leandro Trossard came into the team and provided the assist for Kai Havertz's first-half goal. But look just a bit deeper beneath the surface and a different picture emerged on a frustrating night for Arteta, his coaching staff and the vast majority of the supporters inside the Emirates Stadium. The first half was attack vs defence. Arsenal monopolised the ball, passing it from side to side as they were funnelled down the flanks by the well-drilled blues shirts in front of them. It did not make for compelling viewing as time and again they came up empty. Often, it was with Gabriel Martinelli when the move broke down. The Brazilian was in Saka's position, having been moved from his regular position on the left wing to the right-hand side, and he did not get much change out of Leif Davis. Martinelli has four goals and two assists in the Premier League this season - a reasonable return - but Arsenal need more, especially if Gabriel Magalhaes cannot convert free headers from a few yards out, like he inexplicably did here from a trusty corner routine. The Belgian showed a good turn of pace to beat Ben Johnson on the outside and cross for Havertz to tap in the opener after 23 minutes and nearly grabbed another assist for Gabriel Jesus with an incisive through-ball, only for the striker's finish from an acute angle ruled out for offside. The balance on the left side looked much better, with youngster Myles Lewis-Skelly impressive once again at left-back, but the blow-out win that came at Selhurst Park on Saturday was missing. On co-commentary duties for Prime Video, Alan Shearer continually mentioned the lack of urgency in possession for Arsenal, who were dominant and comfortable, without putting the game to bed. Jesus has been a major bright spark over the festive period, but it didn't go his way against the deep-set Ipswich defence. As added time ran out chants of "Boring, boring Arsenal rang out" before cries of "1-0 to the Arsenal". It summed things up - grateful for the win, but politely asking for more. Ultimately, Arteta will be happy to reflect upon a much-needed win moves them second in the Premier League table, after Chelsea were beaten by Fulham on Boxing Day. But playing at home against a relegation-threatened and very limited opposition, he would have been hoping for more. The victory left him with more questions than answers - and there is little time to tinker with things before the difficult trip to play Brentford on New Year's Day. PDP National Working Committee, NWC, said Ugochinyere’s expulsion by his Ward chapter of the party was of no effect. The PDP Umuopia/Umukegwu Ward chapter of the PDP had expelled Ugochinyere for gross indiscipline, insubordination and anti-party activities. Ugochinyere’s expulsion was contained in a letter from the Ideato LGA chapter of PDP, dated December 5, 2024. The letter was signed by the LG party chairman, ThankGod Okeke, and the secretary, Onyebuchi Umeh. Ugochinyere’s expulsion followed the report of the party’s disciplinary committee, dated November 27, 2024, which investigated misconduct charges against him in line with Section 57 (1-4) of the PDP Constitution, 2017, as amended. The lawmaker was initially suspended at his Umuopia/Umukegwu ward on October 14, 2024, after failing to honor an invitation to appear before the ward executive committee on October 5, 2024. He was summoned to answer allegations of disciplinary offenses, and ignoring reminders and further invitations sent to him on October 7, 2024. However, in a statement on Saturday, the PDP NWC insisted that Ugochinyere is a bonafide member of the party with all rights and privileges. Parts of the statement, signed by PDP spokesman, Debo Ologunagba, read: “The attention of the National Working Committee (NWC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) @OfficialPDPNig has been drawn to the purported expulsion of Hon. Ugochinyere Ikeagwuonu @IkengaImo from the Party by the Umuopia/Umukegwu Ward Chapter of the PDP in Imo State. “The NWC declares the said purported expulsion as null and void and of no effect, not being consistent with the express provision of Sections 57 (7) and 59 (3) of the Constitution of the PDP (as amended in 2017) and laid down Rules of our great Party.” The party relied on Section 57 (7) of its Constitution to affirm Ugochinyere’s continued membership. Meanwhile, the LG chairmen of the PDP in Imo State at the weekend named Ugochinyere the leader of the party in the state. Ugochinyere is the highest ranking government official elected on the PDP platform in Imo State. The Imo PDP local government leaders, who passed vote of confidence on Ugochinyere, also insisted that the party’s acting national chairman, Umar Damagun, and national secretary, Samuel Anyanwu, should be immediately removed to pave way for the reinvigoration of the opposition party. OpenAI to partner with military defense tech companyShares of C3.ai ( AI 2.29% ) were surging last month as investors cheered a new partnership with Microsoft , a sign that the AI software company may finally be turning the corner after years of wide losses. Additionally, the company benefited from a strong report from Palantir , the software company that has best proven the market for AI services thus far. According to data from S&P Global Market Intelligence , the stock finished the month up 51%. As you can see from the chart below, the stock popped after the Microsoft news came out on Nov. 19. ^SPX data by YCharts C3.ai is having a moment C3.ai first scored gains on Nov. 5, tracking with Palantir, which posted strong results in its third quarter. C3.ai is much smaller than Palantir, but the two companies do have some things in common, including a focus on AI software and the fact that they derive a significant percentage of their business from the federal government. C3.ai stock rose 7% on Nov. 5 and jumped another 5% on Nov. 6 in response to the U.S. election results. However, the real surge in the stock came on Nov. 19 when the expanded Microsoft partnership was announced. The stock jumped 24.2% on the news and continued to gain from there. At the Microsoft Ignite conference, the two companies announced a strategic alliance to accelerate the adoption of C3.ai's Enterprise AI platform on Microsoft's Azure cloud infrastructure service. The alliance includes technical integration that will make C3's software like C3 Generative AI available on the Microsoft Commercial Cloud Portal, and include joint sales and marketing for C3's Enterprise AI applications. The two companies already had a partnership, but they called it a "significant milestone" in their relationship. What's next for C3.ai The AI for the enterprise company is bringing a lot of momentum into its second-quarter earnings report, a sign that expectations are high after strong reports from Palantir and other software titans like Salesforce , and thanks to the expanded partnership with Microsoft. C3.ai's revenue growth has been improving, but the company is still significantly unprofitable. For its second-quarter report, which is due out on Monday, analysts expect revenue to increase 24.3% to $91 million and for its adjusted loss per share to widen from $0.13 to $0.16. Given the recent surge, the stock is likely to have a big move one way or the other. Skepticism over the benefits of immigration is a hallmark of Trump's "Make America Great Again" (MAGA) movement and the billionaires' remarks angered immigration hawks who accused them of ignoring US achievements in technological innovation. Incoming White House deputy chief of staff Stephen Miller posted a 2020 speech in which Trump marveled at the American "culture" that had "harnessed electricity, split the atom, and gave the world the telephone and the Internet."
