NEW YORK (AP) — Brian Thompson led one of the biggest health insurers in the U.S. but was unknown to millions of people his decisions affected. Then Wednesday's targeted fatal shooting of the UnitedHealthcare CEO on a midtown Manhattan sidewalk thrust the executive and his business into the national spotlight. Thompson, who was 50, had worked at the giant UnitedHealth Group Inc for 20 years and run the insurance arm since 2021 after running its Medicare and retirement business. As CEO, Thompson led a firm that provides health coverage to more than 49 million Americans — more than the population of Spain. United is the largest provider of Medicare Advantage plans, the privately run versions of the U.S. government’s Medicare program for people age 65 and older. The company also sells individual insurance and administers health-insurance coverage for thousands of employers and state-and federally funded Medicaid programs. The business run by Thompson brought in $281 billion in revenue last year, making it the largest subsidiary of the Minnetonka, Minnesota-based UnitedHealth Group. His $10.2 million annual pay package, including salary, bonus and stock options awards, made him one of the company's highest-paid executives. The University of Iowa graduate began his career as a certified public accountant at PwC and had little name recognition beyond the health care industry. Even to investors who own its stock, the parent company's face belonged to CEO Andrew Witty, a knighted British triathlete who has testified before Congress. When Thompson did occasionally draw attention, it was because of his role in shaping the way Americans get health care. At an investor meeting last year, he outlined his company's shift to “value-based care,” paying doctors and other caregivers to keep patients healthy rather than focusing on treating them once sick. “Health care should be easier for people,” Thompson said at the time. “We are cognizant of the challenges. But navigating a future through value-based care unlocks a situation where the ... family doesn’t have to make the decisions on their own.” Thompson also drew attention in 2021 when the insurer, like its competitors, was widely criticized for a plan to start denying payment for what it deemed non-critical visits to hospital emergency rooms. “Patients are not medical experts and should not be expected to self-diagnose during what they believe is a medical emergency,” the chief executive of the American Hospital Association wrote in an open letter addressed to Thompson. “Threatening patients with a financial penalty for making the wrong decision could have a chilling effect on seeking emergency care.” United Healthcare responded by delaying rollout of the change. Thompson, who lived in a Minneapolis suburb and was the married father of two sons in high school, was set to speak at an investor meeting in a midtown New York hotel. He was on his own and about to enter the building when he was shot in the back by a masked assailant who fled on foot before pedaling an e-bike into Central Park a few blocks away, the New York Police Department said. Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny said investigators were looking at Thompson's social media accounts and interviewing employees and family members. “Didn’t seem like he had any issues at all,” Kenny said. "He did not have a security detail.” AP reporters Michael R. Sisak and Steve Karnowski contributed to this report. NEW DELHI: India's 26 major listed real estate firms have sold properties worth nearly Rs 35,000 crore during the September quarter with Godrej Properties reporting highest sales bookings. According to the data compiled from regulatory filings, the 26 major listed realty firms have reported a combined sales bookings of Rs 34,985 crore in the second quarter of the current fiscal year. Bulk of pre-sales (sales bookings) came from residential segment. In terms of sales bookings, Godrej Properties emerged as the largest listed player during July-September quarter with pre-sales of Rs 5,198 crore. Mumbai-based Macrotech Developers Ltd, which sells properties under the Lodha brand, reported sales bookings of Rs 4,290 crore during the quarter under review. Delhi-NCR-based Max Estates sold properties worth Rs 4,100 crore, while Bengaluru-based Prestige Estates Projects Ltd clocked sales bookings of Rs 4,022.6 crore during the quarter. Delhi-NCR based Signature Global achieved sales bookings of Rs 2,780 crore in the September quarter, driven by strong demand for its housing projects at Gurugram. DLF Ltd, the country's largest realty firm in terms of market capitalisation, sales bookings declined sharply during the July-September period to Rs 692 crore as it did not launch any new housing project. Among other major listed players, Bengaluru-based Brigade Enterprises Ltd reported a sales bookings of Rs 1,821 crore during July-September period of this fiscal year, while Mumbai-based Oberoi Realty did pre-sales of Rs 1,442.46 crore. Mumbai-based Aditya Birla Real Estate sold properties worth Rs 1,412 crore. Bengaluru-based Puravankara Ltd and Sobha Ltd clocked sales bookings of Rs 1,331 crore and Rs 1,178.5 crore, respectively. Delhi-based TARC Ltd also performed well and achieved pre-sales of Rs 1,012 crore during the September quarter. There were many players that reported sales between Rs 500 crore and Rs 1,000 crore during the second quarter of this fiscal year. Pune-based Kolte-Patil Developers Ltd sold properties worth Rs 770 crore, while Mumbai-based Keystone Realtors (Rustomjee brand) achieved pre-sales of Rs 700 crore. Delhi-based Ashiana Housing Ltd reported sales bookings of Rs 673 crore during the September quarter while Bengaluru-based Shriram Properties clocked pre-sales of Rs 568 crore. Mumbai-based firms Raymond Ltd and Sunteck Realty Ltd sold properties worth Rs 562 crore and Rs 524 crore, respectively. Among listed firms that booked less than Rs 500 crore, Ahmedabad-based Arvind Smartspaces sold properties worth Rs 464 crore during the July-September period. Mumbai-based Mahindra Lifespace Developers Ltd achieved a sales bookings of Rs 397 crore. Mumbai-based realtors Arihant SuperstructuresLtd, Ajmera Realty & Infrastructure Ltd and Arkade Developers Ltd reported sales bookings of Rs 270.8 crore, Rs 254 crore and Rs 215 crore, respectively. Suraj Estate Developers sold properties worth Rs 107 crore, while Lucknow-based Eldeco Housing & Industries Ltd clocked pre-sales of Rs 102.9 crore. Mumbai-based Equinox India Developments Ltd (earlier Indiabulls Real Estate Ltd) achieved pre-sales of mere Rs 98 crore during the second quarter of this fiscal year. Sales bookings of many listed entities have declined in the second quarter of 2024-25 because of inauspicious Shraadh period, monsoon rain and also lack of regulatory approvals to launch their projects. For example, DLF Ltd's pre-sales plunged to Rs 692 crore in the September quarter from Rs 6,404 crore in the first quarter of this fiscal. Sales bookings data of many listed players was not available on the stock exchanges. Post-Covid pandemic, the residential real estate segment has revived strongly because of pent-up demand growing desire to have homeownership. Housing prices too have appreciated significantly. Housing market is witnessing a shift in consumer demand towards those realty companies and brands which have better track record of executing real estate projects. Real estate developers, which are not listed on stock exchanges, generally do not report their quarterly and annual sales bookings. Branded and reputed players, including both listed and unlisted ones, have benefited most in this revival cycle as homebuyers do not want to take risk of getting stuck in real estate projects after making payments. Thousands of buyers of many NCR-based builders, like Unitech and Jaypee Infratech, are stuck and fighting legal cases in real estate regulatory authorities at the state-level, tribunals, and courts.

(the "Company" or "Star") (NYSE:SGU), a home energy distributor and services provider, today announced financial results for its fiscal 2024 fourth quarter and year ended September 30, 2024. Three Months Ended September 30, 2024 Compared to the Three Months Ended September 30, 2023 For the fiscal 2024 fourth quarter, Star reported a 10.0 percent decrease in total revenue to $240.3 million compared with $266.9 million in the prior-year period, reflecting slightly lower volumes sold and a decrease in selling prices for petroleum products, partially offset by higher service and installation revenue. The volume of home heating oil and propane sold during the fiscal 2024 fourth quarter decreased by 0.3 million gallons, or 1.5 percent, to 18.5 million gallons, as the additional volume provided from acquisitions was more than offset by the impact of net customer attrition and other factors. Star’s net loss increased by $15.4 million in the quarter, to $35.1 million, as a $28.4 million unfavorable change in the fair value of derivative instruments was only partially offset by a $9.1 million increase in income tax benefit, $1.7 million decrease in Adjusted EBITDA loss, $1.1 million decrease in depreciation and amortization expenses, and $1.1 million lower net interest expense. The Company reported a fourth quarter Adjusted EBITDA loss (a non-GAAP measure defined below) of $29.7 million, or $1.7 million less than in the prior year period, as higher home heating oil and propane per-gallon margins, an increase in service and installation profitability, and additional EBITDA from acquisitions, more than offset an increase in operating expenses and a decline in home heating oil and propane volume sold. “As we move into the heating season and begin a new fiscal year, it’s a great time to reflect on the past twelve months’ performance,” said Jeff Woosnam, Star Group’s President and Chief Executive Officer. “Temperatures in fiscal 2024 were roughly flat year-over-year, and total revenue fell modestly due to slightly lower volumes and selling prices. However, full year Adjusted EBITDA rose by $14.7 million, reflecting an increase in home heating oil and propane per-gallon margins and higher service and installation profitability. We continue to focus on cost containment and the pursuit of attractive acquisitions. At the same time, we remain vigilant in working to address net customer attrition which, at 4.2% in fiscal 2024, was up slightly year-over-year. As we enter the heating season, we believe the Company is well prepared to respond to anything Mother Nature throws our way, while providing our customers with superior customer service.” Fiscal 2024 Compared to Fiscal 2023 For fiscal 2024, Star reported a 9.6 percent decrease in total revenue to $1.8 billion compared with $2.0 billion in the prior-year period, reflecting a decrease in total volume sold and a decline in selling prices in response to lower wholesale product costs. The volume of home heating oil and propane sold during fiscal 2024 declined by 5.8 million gallons, or 2.2 percent, to 253.4 million gallons as the additional volume provided from acquisitions and other factors was more than offset by net customer attrition. Temperatures in Star’s geographic areas of operation were less than 0.1 percent warmer than during the prior-year period but 15.1 percent warmer than normal, as reported by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Star’s net income increased by $3.3 million for fiscal 2024, to $35.2 million, as a $14.7 million increase in Adjusted EBITDA, a $3.9 million decrease in net interest expense, a $0.9 million decrease in depreciation and amortization expenses and a $0.7 million decrease in income tax expense were largely offset by a $17.0 million unfavorable change in the fair value of derivative instruments. Adjusted EBITDA for fiscal 2024 increased by $14.7 million, to $111.6 million, as an increase in home heating oil and propane per-gallon margins, an increase in service and installation profitability and the additional Adjusted EBITDA from acquisitions more than offset a 10.9 million gallon decrease in home heating oil and propane volume in the base business, a $5.0 million reduction in the Company’s weather hedge benefit and an increase in base business total operating expenses. EBITDA and Adjusted EBITDA (Non-GAAP Financial Measures) EBITDA (Earnings from continuing operations before net interest expense, income taxes, depreciation and amortization) and Adjusted EBITDA (Earnings from continuing operations before net interest expense, income taxes, depreciation and amortization, (increase) decrease in the fair value of derivatives, other income (loss), net, multiemployer pension plan withdrawal charge, gain or loss on debt redemption, goodwill impairment, and other non-cash and non-operating charges) are non-GAAP financial measures that are used as supplemental financial measures by management and external users of the Company’s financial statements, such as investors, commercial banks and research analysts, to assess Star’s position with regard to the following: compliance with certain financial covenants included in our debt agreements; financial performance without regard to financing methods, capital structure, income taxes or historical cost basis; operating performance and return on invested capital compared to those of other companies in the retail distribution of refined petroleum products, without regard to financing methods and capital structure; ability to generate cash sufficient to pay interest on our indebtedness and to make distributions to our partners; and the viability of acquisitions, capital expenditure projects and the overall rates of return of alternative investment opportunities. The method of calculating Adjusted EBITDA may not be consistent with that of other companies, and EBITDA and Adjusted EBITDA both have limitations, as analytical tools and so should not be viewed in isolation but in conjunction with measurements that are computed in accordance with GAAP. Some of the limitations of EBITDA and Adjusted EBITDA are as follows: EBITDA and Adjusted EBITDA do not reflect cash used for capital expenditures; although depreciation and amortization are non-cash charges, the assets being depreciated or amortized often will have to be replaced and EBITDA and Adjusted EBITDA do not reflect the cash requirements for such replacements; EBITDA and Adjusted EBITDA do not reflect changes in, or cash requirements for, working capital; EBITDA and Adjusted EBITDA do not reflect the cash necessary to make payments of interest or principal on indebtedness; and EBITDA and Adjusted EBITDA do not reflect the cash required to pay taxes. REMINDER: Members of Star's management team will host a webcast and conference call at 11:00 a.m. Eastern Time tomorrow, December 5, 2024. The webcast will be accessible on the company’s website, at www.stargrouplp.com, and the telephone number for the conference call is 888-346-3470 (or 412-317-5169 for international callers). Billionaire Elon Musk had accused MacKenzie Scott of being one of the "super rich-ex-wives" who would contribute to "reasons that Western Civilization died" following which Scott doubled her donations to philanthropic causes. Now, the Tesla and SpaceX CEO, who recently admitted to using Ozempic-like weight loss drugs, has taken a fresh dig at her over her charitable donations. Musk shared an X post by John LeFevre on Monday that criticizes Scott's donations to nonprofits that focus on liberal issues like immigration rights, LGBTQ+ rights, racial equity, and social justice causes. WNBA star tells Elon Musk to 'go back to Africa' after Donald Trump failure Musk warned he's 'making enemies and will get hurt' if he doesn't quit politics LeFevre sounds alarm over the same post, saying: "She's just getting started." Musk agrees with LeFevre's criticism as he reshared the post with a single-word comment: "Concerning." Scott, the former wife of Amazon founder, Jeff Bezos has donated over $19 billion to more than 2,450 non-profit organizations through her organization Yield Giving since 2019. Courtesy of Amazon's rising share values, Scott's net worth is above $30 billion and she shows no signs of slowing down on donations. Musk, a close ally to President-elect Donald Trump , is the world's richest man and has made more than $270 million to help Trump win. This is not the first time he has attacked Scott for supporting progressive issues. In a now-deleted X post from March, Musk wrote: "'Super rich ex-wives who hate their former spouse' should be listed among 'Reasons that Western Civilization died.'" Two weeks after his post, Scott announced she was doubling the size of her donations to $640 million across 361 nonprofits. "Roughly 75% of them are non-profits that support the economic security and opportunity of people who are struggling by improving access to affordable housing, jobs that provide stability for themselves and their families, child development and post-secondary education, healthcare, and financial counseling, business coaching, and low-interest rate loans focused on increasing economic potential and building wealth. The others support well-being through other means, such as work on human rights and natural resources conservation," she wrote. Scott also explained the gift-making process where instead of withdrawing funds from a bank account or stock portfolio that "increases the wealth and influence of leaders who already have it," she withdraws them from "a portfolio of investments in mission-aligned ventures, with leaders from the populations they are serving, or from generally undercapitalized groups like women and people of color." "In this way, the money can help address these issues twice, first by advancing economic mobility and unlocking the innovation and social benefit that comes from incorporating diverse needs and perspectives in the world being constructed around us, and next in the hands of experienced non-profit teams creating value through their transformative models of care and change," Scott explained.

India News | Sukhbir Badal Recalls Close Personal Relation His Father and Manmohan Singh SharedAhead of Ohio State's appearance in the College Football Playoff, head coach Ryan Day received a vote of confidence from his athletic director despite the Buckeyes' latest loss to Michigan. Ohio State AD Ross Bjork appeared on 97.1 The Fan in Columbus on Thursday, where a radio host asked him whether Day would be the Buckeyes' coach at the start of next season regardless of how the playoffs shake out. "Absolutely," said Bjork, who came to Ohio State from the same role at Texas A&M in July. "Coach Day and I have just hit it off so well. I've been really, really impressed. Every single time I've talked to him, I've learned something. He's innovative. He recruits at the highest level. He's got a great staff. There's always tweaks. There was tweaks after last year, right? You're always going to tweak things. You're always going to make adjustments. You're always going to make improvements." Bjork continued by addressing the "championship or bust" attitude held by some of the fanbase. "This whole mentality about -- and look, we live it, and we sign up for it -- but if you get fixated on the end result and not have the process fully baked every time, you're going to lose," Bjork said. "The mindset's going to lose because you're only fixated on one thing. And so what we have to do is this whole ‘championship or bust' mentality, you want that as the goal, but it has to be about the process. "To me, we've got to maybe change some conversations a little bit. I think we need to maybe just approach things a little bit differently." Day is 66-10 as Ohio State's coach and led the Buckeyes to one national championship game appearance, a 52-24 loss to Alabama to cap the 2020 season. Ohio State went 10-2 in the regular season but missed out on a place in the Big Ten championship game when rival Michigan defeated the Buckeyes 13-10 on Nov. 30. It was Michigan's fourth straight win in The Game, and Day is now 1-4 as a head coach against the Wolverines. At the time, Bjork released a statement of support for Day, and he doubled down during Thursday's radio hit. "He's great to work with. He totally gets it. He loves being a Buckeye, and so we're going to support him at the highest level throughout," Bjork said. "But here's the thing too, and the reason why we needed to say something after that game is we're still breathing. They're still alive. The season's not over. The book is not closed, right? And so we've got to have confidence. I mean, Ohio State should be confident every single day. We're Ohio State. "But we also have to make sure we stay to our values and we stick to what we believe in. And so to me, it's the process as much as it is about the end result." --Field Level Media

Most Australians feel they are poorer now than they were three years ago, as a poll reveals widespread dissatisfaction with the Albanese government’s priorities. A new Redbridge poll found 52 per cent of those surveyed either disagreed or strongly disagreed with the proposition that the government has the right focus. 40 per cent of voters said Peter Dutton was ready for office, slightly more than the 39 per cent who said he was not. Asked on Seven’s Sunrise if the polling meant Australia was “in the mood for change”, Social Services Minister Amanda Rishworth said the government was focused on the cost of living, while the Coalition was blocking bills. Directing her comments to Liberal senator Jane Hume, Rishworth said: “You’ve voted against our housing bills. Blocked our cost of living measures. Fought against our energy price measures. Everything we’ve done, the Liberal Party have fought against it...” Hume repeatedly interjected Rishworth’s response, asking “Where have you been for 21⁄2 years?” “You spent a year concentrating on the Voice referendum,” she quipped. Meanwhile, on Nine’s Today , Nationals senator Matt Canavan also responded to the poll, saying Australians were poorer because “we’ve adopted a lot of stupid policies that deny Australians the use of their own energy resources that load our country with way too much red tape”. Last month, the Resolve Political Monitor found Australians hold Labor accountable for the financial pain of rising prices and the cost of housing. Thirty-six per cent believe the federal government is responsible for their rising living costs – far greater than the 13 per cent who blame global factors outside Australia’s control. President Joe Biden on Tuesday called Israel and Hezbollah’s ceasefire agreement “good news” and expressed hope the pause in more than 13 months of fighting will be the catalyst to also end the war in Gaza. Biden made his comments in a Rose Garden speech. He stressed that Israel reserved the right to quickly resume operations in Lebanon if Hezbollah broke the terms of the truce. US President Joe Biden administration has been trying to calm relations with Beijing. Credit: AP Biden added that the deal between Israel and Hezbollah “was designed to be a permanent cessation of hostilities”. The president’s comments come as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s security Cabinet approved a ceasefire deal with Hezbollah, clearing the way for the truce to take effect. Netanyahu’s office said the plan was approved by a 10-1 margin. The late-night vote came shortly before President Joe Biden was expected to announce details of the deal in Washington. Earlier, Netanyahu defended the ceasefire, saying Israel has inflicted heavy damage on Hezbollah and could now focus its efforts on Hamas militants in Gaza and his top security concern, Iran. John Dramani Mahama, Ghana’s President-elect, has revealed his plans to transition into full-time farming once he steps away from politics. During a recent visit to his Yapei and Busunu farms, Mahama spoke about his deep connection to agriculture, calling it his true passion. He emphasized that if not for his political career, he would have dedicated his life entirely to farming. “Farming is my life. I love it. I am sure if I didn’t go into politics, I would be a full-time farmer. In any case, when I retire after this stint, of course, I am going to go into full-time farming,” Mahama said. He also jokingly added that those wishing to see him after his retirement would have to visit him on his farm, underscoring his commitment to agriculture as his post-political calling.

“How much did you pay to have your daughter raped?” “Your wife and daughter will pay for the trip with their bodies.” “If you cross into Texas illegally, you will regret it forever.” These slogans are among the blunt and at times graphic messages the state of Texas is paying an estimated $100,000 to install on billboards across Mexico and Central America in the coming weeks, in the hopes of deterring future illegal immigration. “We’re here to expose the truth,” Texas Governor Greg Abbott said at a recent press conference about the plan, calling it “tough medicine.” “There is a largely unspoken sexual assault crisis impacting women and children, children migrating to the Texas border,” Rose Luna, the CEO of the Texas Association Against Sexual Assault, added at the event. “ ... We applaud the state in recognizing the silent crisis and for acknowledging and elevating this very serious yet hidden issue.” The billboards are part of Texas’s larger, controversial effort to pursue its own state-level immigration enforcement actions, which are typically the province of the federal government. The state has spent over $11 billion building border walls , busing migrants to Democratic cities, and surging state troops to the border, part of what Abbott has declared is an effort to fend off an “ invasion ” of immigrants that gives him special emergency powers. Some observers argue these billboards, which will be translated into four languages—Spanish, Arabic, Chinese, and Russian—are telling migrants what they already know, which is that traveling to the U.S. to cross the border often carries the risk of sexual violence and buse from “coyote” guides across the border to cartels to Border Patrol agents themselves . “There seems to be a misunderstanding on two counts,” University of California Davis migration and trafficking expert David Kyle told The Washington Post . “First, that if migrants only knew the dangers, they wouldn’t take the risks. Second, we also seem to have a lack of awareness [of] the depth of the challenges in their home communities.” Moreover, even if people don’t attempt an illegal crossing, they still face high risks merely heading to the U.S., where they can legally request asylum by presenting themselves to federal officers. A Reuters investigation in 2023 documented a spike in sexual violence against migrants in border cities like Reynosa and Matamoros, and data suggests women are making up an increasing percentage of those found dead at the border. And making it inside the U.S. is sadly no guarantee of safety either for immigrants. In July, the Department of Justice sued a Texas nonprofit, accusing it of a pattern of sexual abuse against unaccompanied immigrant children held in their custody. Texas’s border crackdown has joined a Biden administration that’s sought to tighten immigration in its final months in office. The president placed limits on asylum over the summer , which observers say has brought border-crossings down. Meanwhile, recently released data shows that Immigration and Customs Enforcement deported more than 271,000 people over the last fiscal year, the highest level since 2014.From Chili's 'triple dipper' to The Cheesecake Factory, restaurant chains are reviving mallsThe Super Football Conference released its All-Division football teams for the 2024 season. OLDER adults frequently find themselves battling assumptions that have little to do with their actual capabilities. The stereotype of older adults as frail, cognitively declining or resistant to change are manifestations of ageism, a form of discrimination against individuals because of their age, most commonly because they are elderly. Ageism often manifests in subtle and understated ways. It’s in the hesitant tone of a recruiter turning down a job application from a 60-year-old, citing “cultural fit”.

Stock market today: Wall Street rises at the start of a holiday-shortened weekCharlotte Crosby trebles security measures to ‘feel safe’ amid attempted robberyCAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. — NASA's two stuck astronauts just got their space mission extended again. That means they won't be back on Earth until spring — 10 months after rocketing into orbit on Boeing's Starliner capsule. NASA announced the latest delay in Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams' homecoming Tuesday. The two test pilots planned to be away just a week or so when they blasted off June 5 on Boeing's first astronaut flight to the International Space Station. Their mission grew from eight days to eight months after NASA decided to send the company's problem-plagued Starliner capsule back empty in September. FILE - This image made from a NASA live stream shows NASA astronauts Suni Williams and Butch Wilmore during a press conference from the International Space Station on Friday, Sept. 13, 2024. (NASA via AP, File) Now the pair won't return until the end of March or even April because of a delay in launching their replacements, according to NASA. A fresh crew needs to launch before Wilmore and Williams can return and the next mission was bumped more than a month, according to the space agency. NASA's next crew of four was supposed to launch in February, followed by Wilmore and Williams' return home by the end of that month alongside two other astronauts. But SpaceX needs more time to prepare the new capsule for liftoff. That launch is now scheduled for no earlier than late March. NASA said it considered using a different SpaceX capsule to fly up the replacement crew in order to keep the flights on schedule. However, it decided the best option was to wait for the new capsule to transport the next crew. NASA prefers to have overlapping crews at the space station for a smoother transition, according to officials. Most space station missions last six months, with a few reaching a full year. The pay recommendations came after Chancellor Rachel Reeves called for every Government department to cut costs by 5%, as she started work on a sweeping multi-year spending review to be published in 2025. Independent pay review bodies will consider the proposals for pay rises for teachers, NHS workers and senior civil servants. The Department of Health said it viewed 2.8% as a “reasonable amount” to set aside, in its recommendations to the NHS Pay Review Body and the Doctors’ and Dentists’ Remuneration Board remit groups. A 2.8% pay rise for teachers in 2025/26 would “maintain the competitiveness of teachers’ pay despite the challenging financial backdrop the Government is facing”, the Department for Education said. The Cabinet Office also suggested pay increases for senior civil servants should be kept to no more than 2.8%. Paul Johnson, director of the influential economics think tank the Institute for Fiscal Studies (IFS), said it was “not a bad ballpark figure” and feels “just about affordable” given the Government’s public spending plans. The downside, he said, is that public sector workers have lost out since 2010 and unions will be upset that this is not making up the gap, he told Sky News’ Politics Hub with Sophy Ridge. “But given the constraints facing the Chancellor I think it’s pretty hard to argue for more for public sector pay when public sector services ... are under real strain,” he said. Unions expressed their disappointment in the recommendations, with some hinting they could be willing to launch industrial action. The Royal College of Nursing general secretary and chief executive called for “open direct talks now” to avoid “further escalation to disputes and ballots”. Professor Nicola Ranger said: “The Government has today told nursing staff they are worth as little as £2 extra a day, less than the price of a coffee. “Nursing is in crisis – there are fewer joining and too many experienced professionals leaving. This is deeply offensive to nursing staff, detrimental to their patients and contradictory to hopes of rebuilding the NHS. “The public understands the value of nursing and they know that meaningful reform of the NHS requires addressing the crisis in nursing. “We pulled out of the Pay Review Body process, alongside other unions, because it is not the route to address the current crisis. “That has been demonstrated today. “Fair pay must be matched by structural reform. Let’s open direct talks now and avoid further escalation to disputes and ballots – I have said that directly to government today.” Professor Philip Banfield, chairman of the British Medical Association’s council, urged the sector’s pay review body to “show it is now truly independent”. “For this Government to give evidence to the doctors’ and dentists’ pay review body (DDRB) believing a 2.8% pay rise is enough, indicates a poor grasp of the unresolved issues from two years of industrial action,” he said. He said the proposal is far below the current rate of inflation and that the Government was “under no illusion” when doctors accepted pay offers in the summer that there was a “very real risk of further industrial action” if “pay erosion” was not addressed in future pay rounds. “This sub-inflationary suggestion from the current Government serves as a test to the DDRB. “The BMA expects it to take this opportunity to show it is now truly independent, to take an objective view of the evidence it receives from all parties, not just the Government, and to make an offer that reflects the value of doctors’ skills and expertise in a global market, and that moves them visibly further along the path to full pay restoration.” The NEU’s general secretary, Daniel Kebede, said teachers’ pay had been cut by more than one-fifth in real terms since 2010. “Along with sky-high workload, the pay cuts have resulted in a devastating recruitment and retention crisis. Teacher shortages across the school system hit pupils and parents too. “A 2.8% increase is likely to be below inflation and behind wage increases in the wider economy. This will only deepen the crisis in education.” In a hint that there could be a return to industrial action he added: “NEU members fought to win the pay increases of 2023 and 2024. “We are putting the Government on notice. Our members care deeply about education and feel the depth of the crisis. This won’t do.” The offer for teachers is the “exact opposite of fixing the foundations” and will result in bigger class sizes and more cuts to the curriculum, Pepe Di’Iasio, general secretary of the Association of School and College Leaders, said: “The inadequacy of the proposed pay award is compounded by the Government’s intention that schools should foot the bill out of their existing allocations. “Given that per-pupil funding will increase on average by less than 1% next year, and the Government’s proposal is for an unfunded 2.8% pay award, it is obvious that this is in fact an announcement of further school cuts.” Paul Whiteman, general secretary at school leaders’ union NAHT, said: This recommendation falls far short of what is needed to restore the competitiveness of the teaching profession, to enable it to retain experienced professionals and attract new talent. Unison head of health Helga Pile said: “The Government has inherited a financial mess from its predecessors, but this is not what NHS workers wanted to hear. “Staff are crucial in turning around the fortunes of the NHS. Improving performance is a key Government pledge, but the pay rise proposed is barely above the cost of living.”Dallas (5-8) at Carolina (3-10) Sunday, 1 p.m. EST, FOX. BetMGM Odds: Panthers by 3. The veteran wide receiver was Bryce Young's favorite option last season and is finally developing into that again this season after battling back from a hamstring injury that left him on injured reserve. Thielen has 17 catches on 21 targets for 201 yards and a touchdown over the past two games. When the Panthers need a first down on fourth down, the pass is almost always going to Thielen. Cowboys RB Rico Dowdle vs. NFL's worst run defense. Dowdle has had the first two 100-yard outings of his career the past two weeks, resetting his career best both times. The undrafted fifth-year player on an expiring contract had 131 yards in the loss to the Bengals. Since taking over as the lead back at the start of November, Dowdle is averaging 16 carries and 81 yards with a touchdown rushing and another receiving. On Sunday, he will face the league’s 32nd-ranked run defense. Carolina allowed Philadelphia’s Saquon Barkley to run for 124 yards last week and Tampa Bay’s Bucky Irving to run for a career-high 152 yards the week before that. :Mikaela Shiffrin's bid for a record-extending 100th career World Cup came undone when the American crashed late in her second run of the giant slalom event at Killington, Vermont, on Saturday and was taken off the slope on a sled. Shiffrin posted the fastest first run and looked well on course to reach the milestone after a blazing start to her second run before a sudden crash sent her slamming into the safety netting and left onlookers stunned. The two-time Olympic gold medallist remained down for several minutes before being transported off the hill on a rescue sled. As they saw the American come into view on the sled, the home crowd who had shown up eager to witness a milestone win offered polite applause. "The course and conditions are really spectacular," Shiffrin had said after finishing the first run with a 0.32-second advantage over Sweden's Sara Hector. "It's pretty straightforward and I think there may be some spots on the hill with a few stones that are kind of surfacing as people ski. "Some of the skiers coming down they look fine, and then their ski just slips out. And the surface is actually really great so I don't think it's an issue of not enough grip so much as you hit a stone and you lose your edge." Hector went on to win with a combined time of one minute 53.08 seconds to beat Croatia's Zrinka Ljutic by 0.54 seconds. Switzerland's Camille Rast was third. "It's so sad of course for Mikaela, a crash like that after she was skiing so well. It breaks my heart," said Hector. Shiffrin missed six weeks after injuring her knee in a high-speed crash in January while competing in the World Cup downhill in Cortina d'Ampezzo. In October she said she would drop the discipline from her schedule for this season. Since returning from injury in March, Shiffrin has shown no signs of rust. She closed last season with a pair of slalom wins before adding another two to her haul this month. If Shiffrin avoids injury, she will have another chance at her 100th win on Sunday in the slalom event. She has won the slalom at Killington in six of the seven years it has been held there. The 29-year-old Shiffrin began the season needing three wins to reach the century mark on the World Cup circuit and set herself up to accomplish the feat on home snow with back-to-back slalom victories in Finland and Austria over the last two weeks. She established herself as the most successful Alpine skier in World Cup history, male or female, when she topped retired Swedish great Ingemar Stenmark's decades-old record of 86 World Cup victories in March 2023. Unions attack 2.8% Government pay rise proposal for NHS workers and teachersNEW YORK — The man charged with killing UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson was not a client of the medical insurer and may have targeted it because of its size and influence, a senior police official said Thursday. NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny told NBC New York in an interview Thursday that investigators have uncovered evidence that Luigi Mangione had prior knowledge UnitedHealthcare was holding its annual investor conference in New York City. Mangione also mentioned the company in a note found in his possession when he was detained by police in Pennsylvania. "We have no indication that he was ever a client of United Healthcare, but he does make mention that it is the fifth largest corporation in America, which would make it the largest healthcare organization in America. So that's possibly why he targeted that company," Kenny said. UnitedHealthcare is in the top 20 largest U.S. companies by market capitalization but is not the fifth largest. It is the largest U.S. health insurer. Mangione remains jailed without bail in Pennsylvania, where he was arrested Monday after being spotted at a McDonald's in the city of Altoona, about 230 miles west of New York City. His lawyer there, Thomas Dickey, said Mangione intends to plead not guilty. Dickey also said he had yet to see evidence decisively linking his client to the crime. Mangione's arrest came five days after the caught-on-camera killing of Thompson outside a Manhattan hotel. Police say the shooter waited outside the hotel, where the health insurer was holding its investor conference, early Dec. 4. He approached Thompson from behind and shot him before fleeing on a bicycle through Central Park. Mangione is fighting attempts to extradite him back to New York so that he can face a murder charge in Thompson's killing. A hearing was scheduled for Dec. 30. The 26-year-old, who police say was found with a " ghost gun " matching shell casings found at the site of the shooting, is charged in Pennsylvania with possession of an unlicensed firearm, forgery and providing false identification to police. Mangione is an Ivy League graduate from a prominent Maryland real estate family. In posts on social media, Mangione wrote about experiencing severe chronic back pain before undergoing a spinal fusion surgery in 2023. Afterward, he posted that the operation was a success and that his pain improved and mobility returned. He urged others to consider the same type of surgery. On Wednesday, police said investigators are looking at his writings about his health problems and his criticism of corporate America and the U.S. health care system. Kenny said in the NBC interview that Mangione's family reported him missing to San Francisco authorities in November.

In a statement released on December 26, the UAE's Ministry of Foreign Affairs labeled the event as both provocative and an incitement against Muslims, branding it an act of extremism. Highlighting their firm stance, the Ministry underscored the necessity of providing complete protection for Al-Aqsa Mosque. They urged the cessation of provocative activities on the site and reiterated respect for the custodial role that the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan holds over these sacred spaces in line with international law. The Ministry also sounded the alarm over potential regional instability resulting from such provocations, cautioning against further escalation. Furthermore, the UAE called on Israel to cease its actions and appealed to the international community to bolster efforts for a political solution ensuring comprehensive peace and the establishment of a sovereign Palestinian state. The Montana Department of Public Health and Human Services announced Friday that Best Beginnings scholarship recipients will no longer have to prove separate eligibility for the Women, Infants and Children nutritional program. Participants in either program must earn a household income at or below 185% of the federal poverty line, currently $47,767 annually for a family of three. WIC enrollees must be pregnant, postpartum, breastfeeding or have a child younger than 5. “Both of these programs serve many of the same families, so as a way to improve customer service we made the decision to streamline the eligibility process for families,” said Lacy Little, Montana WIC program director, in an emailed statement. “This will make it easier for families to gain access to the nutritional food and support the WIC program provides.” Hamilton restaurant puts Montana wheat center stage Scoreboard: Wrangler National Finals Rodeo (Dec. 12) Officials outline infrastructure plans for growth in north Hamilton Hit show ‘Yellowstone’ doesn’t just portray ranching in Montana. Festive trucks: East Helena Christmas Convoy claims city streets, lights up the community This change comes in the wake of intense scrutiny over the state health department and its handling of the Medicaid redetermination process that led to over 115,000 people being disenrolled from the joint federal-state health insurance program. During the unwinding period, droves of people said they didn’t receive re-enrollment information in a timely fashion or at the correct mailing address. DPHHS reported some of the longest help line wait times in the country, and many people couldn’t access in-person support in their local communities partly due to the closure of 19 public assistance offices in 2017. More than 60 organizations that serve a wide variety of vulnerable families and children across the state even penned a letter to Gov. Greg Gianforte in June, calling on him to improve access to public benefits by allocating funding to DPHHS specifically to hire more staff and modernize systems. WIC offers a spate of resources for families and pregnant or postpartum women including special food packages, peer counseling, lactation experts, baby food, breastfeeding support and pumps, access to trained staff and more. Roughly 13,400 women, infants, and children are enrolled in Montana, but that accounts for just 55% of eligible families, according to the state health agency. DPHHS hopes that more closely linking child care with WIC will spur enrollment. Lawmakers expanded the Best Beginnings program in 2023 to make more families eligible. The Legislature passed a bill that increased the income threshold to the 185% of the federal poverty line mark. Families who make closer to that line pay higher co-pays than those who earn less. Some Democrats in the state Legislature as well as child care advocates have said they hope to expand the Best Beginnings program even more in the upcoming session, noting that families in more expensive areas such as Gallatin County earn above the current income threshold but still not enough to pay for child care. Providers say they can’t reduce their fees because of rising costs such as rent and the need to pay wages that will attract workers in these pricey communities. Gianforte’s budget proposal does not fund a larger Best Beginnings program. To enroll in WIC or learn more about the benefits it offers, families can visit www.dphhs.mt.gov/ecfsd/wic/index, contact their local WIC clinic or visit www.signupwic.com. g-7bet Charting the Trump train’s global economic trajectoryThe new, 12-team College Football Playoff brings with it a promise to be bigger, more exciting, more lucrative. Perfect or 100% fair? Well, nobody ever believed that. The first expanded playoff bracket unveiled Sunday left a presumably deserving Alabama team on the sideline in favor of an SMU squad that finished with a better record after playing a schedule that was not as difficult. It ranked undefeated Oregon first but set up a possible rematch against Ohio State, the team that came closest to beating the Ducks this year. It treated underdog Boise State like a favorite and banged-up Georgia like a world beater at No. 2. It gave Ohio State home-field advantage against Tennessee for reasons it would take a supercomputer to figure out. It gave the sport the multiweek tournament it has longed for, but also ensured there will be plenty to grouse about between now and when the trophy is handed out on Jan. 20 after what will easily be the longest college football season in history. All of it, thankfully, will be sorted out on the field starting with first-round games on campuses Dec. 20 and 21, then over three succeeding rounds that will wind their way through traditional bowl sites. Maybe Oregon coach Dan Lanning, whose undefeated Ducks are the favorite to win it all, put it best when he offered: "Winning a national championship is not supposed to be easy.” Neither, it turns out, is figuring out who should play for it. The Big Ten will lead the way with four teams in the tournament, followed by the SEC with three and the ACC with two. The lasting memory from the inaugural bracket will involve the decision that handed the ACC that second bid. Alabama of the SEC didn't play Saturday. SMU of the ACC did. The Mustangs fell behind by three touchdowns to Clemson before coming back to tie. But they ultimately lost 34-31 on a 56-yard field goal as time expired. “We were on pins and needles,” SMU coach Rhett Lashley said. “Until we saw the name ‘SMU’ up there, we were hanging on the edge. We're really, really happy and thankful to the committee for rewarding our guys for their total body of work." The Mustangs only had two losses, compared to three for the Crimson Tide. Even though SMU's schedule wasn't nearly as tough, the committee was impressed by the way the Mustangs came back against Clemson. “We just felt, in this particular case, SMU had the nod above Alabama,” said Michigan athletic director Warde Manuel, the chairman of the selection committee. “But it’s no disrespect to Alabama’s strength of schedule. We looked at the entire body of work for both teams.” Alabama athletic director Greg Byrne was gracious, up to a point. “Disappointed with the outcome and felt we were one of the 12 best teams in the country,” he said on social media. He acknowledged — despite all of Alabama’s losses coming against conference opponents this season — that the Tide’s push to schedule more games against teams from other major conferences in order to improve its strength of schedule did not pay off this time. “That is not good for college football," Byrne said. Georgia, the SEC champion, was seeded second; Boise State, the Mountain West champion, earned the third seed; and Big 12 titlist Arizona State got the fourth seed and the fourth and final first-round bye. All will play in quarterfinals at bowl games on Dec. 31-Jan. 1. Clemson stole a bid and the 12th seed with its crazy win over SMU, the result that ultimately cost Alabama a spot in the field. The Tigers moved to No. 16 in the rankings, but got in as the fifth-best conference winner. The conference commissioners' idea to give conference champions preferable treatment in this first iteration of the 12-team playoff could be up for reconsideration after this season. The committee actually ranked Boise State, the Mountain West Champion, at No. 9 and Big 12 champion Arizona State at No. 12, but both get to skip the first round. Another CFP guideline: There’s no reseeding of teams after each round, which means no break for Oregon. The top-seeded Ducks will face the winner of Tennessee-Ohio State in the Rose Bowl. Oregon beat Ohio State 32-31 earlier this year in one of the season’s best games. No. 12 Clemson at No. 5 Texas, Dec. 21. Clemson is riding high after the SMU upset, while Texas is 0-2 against Georgia and 11-0 vs. everyone else this season. The winner faces ... Arizona State in the Peach Bowl. Huh? No. 11 SMU at No. 6 Penn State, Dec. 21. The biggest knock against the Mustangs was that they didn't play any big boys with that 60th-ranked strength of schedule. Well, now they get to. The winner faces ... Boise State in the Fiesta Bowl. Yes, SMU vs. Boise was the quarterfinal we all expected. No. 10 Indiana at No. 7 Notre Dame, Dec. 20. Hoosiers coach Curt Cignetti thought his team deserved a home game. Well, not quite but close. The winner faces ... Georgia in the Sugar Bowl. The Bulldogs got the No. 2 seed despite a throwing-arm injury to QB Carson Beck. But what else was the committee supposed to do? No. 9 Tennessee at No. 8 Ohio State , Dec. 21. The Buckeyes (losses to Oregon, Michigan) got home field over the Volunteers (losses to Arkansas, Georgia) in a matchup of programs with two of the biggest stadiums in football. The winner faces ... Oregon in the Rose Bowl. Feels like that matchup should come in the semifinals or later. Get poll alerts and updates on the AP Top 25 throughout the season. Sign up here . SKOPJE, North Macedonia (AP) — A political party in North Macedonia on Saturday demanded authorities ban social networks whose content incites violence and self-destructive behavior after several young people were seriously injured in connection with the popular “Superman challenge” on TikTok. Health authorities said at least 17 students, ages 10 to 17, were brought to hospitals in the capital Skopje and other towns over the past week with broken bones, contusions and bruises. The children were injured after being thrown into the air by their friends to fly like superheroes and get applause on the internet. The Liberal-Democratic Party, which was part of the left-led coalition that ruled the country from 2016 to earlier in 2024, issued a press statement Saturday strongly condemning “the irresponsible spread of dangerous content on social media, such as the latest TikTok 'challenge' known as ‘Superman,’ which has injured six children across (the country) in the past 24 hours.” “The lack of adequate control over the content of social media allows such ‘games’ to reach the most vulnerable users,” the party statement said. It demanded the “immediate introduction of measures to ban content that incites violence and self-destructive behavior, increase surveillance, and sanction platforms that enable dangerous trends.” North Macedonia’s education minister Vesna Janevska said students should focus on education, not TikTok challenges. “The ban on mobile phones in schools will not have an effect. Phones will be available to children in their homes, neighborhoods and other environments,” she said. Psychologists have warned that the desire to be “in” with the trends on social networks, combined with excessive use of mobile phones, is the main reason for the rise in risky behaviors among children. They urged parents and schools to talk with students.

Investors can focus on these stock market themes in 2025Electricity prices in the Philippines have a real risk of rising even further without additional or expanded coal plants in the near term. Why? It is all about going to the next best option for more baseload power, which in this case is gas or nuclear energy. Power demand is projected to grow by over 5% annually, and this needs to be met by a growing pie of dispatchable capacities like coal, gas, and/or nuclear. As the whole energy pie expands, phasing out coal immediately deprives us of today’s most viable and more affordable option for continuous power reliability. Less coal and more gas in the baseload will be more expensive for electricity users. Looking at some of Meralco’s recent competitive selection process, the lowest of two winning bids for a 600-megawatt baseload power requirement was P5.6015/kWh from a coal plant. Had Meralco sourced that requirement from the spot market instead, consumers would have spent about P9.9 billion more. In comparison, in a separate bid for a capacity of 1,200 megawatts, a natural gas plant won at P7.0718/kWh. Gas was more expensive by P1.47/kWh. On the other hand, with nuclear, the investment risk is still high, and there is a hefty price tag for high risks even if it is high reward. For one, there is yet to be a policy framework for nuclear power generation in the Philippines. Second, touted small- and medium-sized modular reactors are “first-of-a-kind” uncommercialized technologies that might put initial investors at a first mover disadvantage. Third, considering the existing bottlenecks in the Philippine energy sector, it is still quite difficult to assure investors that nuclear projects can progress on budget and on time. We needed the additional baseload power yesterday and we still need them now. “But what about solar and wind power?” one might ask. “Aren’t they getting cheaper? Isn’t battery storage getting cheaper as well?” While solar and wind projects can be scaled, their power generation isn’t consistent and reliable, much less dispatchable, and can’t be baseload power. The power generation of these variable renewable energy capacities swings depending on the weather or the time of day (no sun at night), requiring a “firming” resource like battery storage or dispatchable capacities. While coupling battery storage to solar and wind can address the intermittency, the resulting cost simply isn’t economically viable. J.P . Morgan’s 13th annual energy paper cited an analysis from Rice University which computed the total system cost if just one source plus storage served 95% of total demand in Texas. It was found that onshore wind + storage was at $131/MWh, solar PV + storage was at $177/MWh, while coal was just at $72/MWh. Coal has less need of support from a firming source and, relatively, renewable energy plus storage could be twice more expensive. We all want more indigenous renewable energy in our power mix. But, as shown by a slew of recent articles on local banks ceasing coal financing, it isn’t clear to some of us how without additional coal, we risk higher power prices. The economics of fossil fuels are more equitable right now than the economics of rushing into net zero or, worse for lower income earners, the phasing out of coal power plants entirely from the power mix. We should be comfortable with the fact that one can co-exist with the other. Maximizing all sources of energy leads to cheap power, which benefits all — from the rich to the poor — and fuels businesses and jobs in the economy. Putting all our eggs in the emissions reduction basket will have very little effect on the total stock of greenhouse gas emissions but will have a sizable negative impact on Philippine economy and society. Equity demands not rushing into a more expensive energy system that will further burden those with low to modest incomes (see: “The pressing needs of Filipinos” and “Push for renewable energy should be balanced with pressing needs of people” ). We need dispatchable coal power until such time that there is a more economic baseload alternative. No more coal would mean haphazardly expanding our baseload exposure to gas, which is more expensive, or to nuclear like small- and medium-sized modular reactors, which are still risky and yet to be commercially available. Nuclear energization is not even likely to happen in the near term, so this doesn’t address the baseload power that we need now and into the rest of the 2020s. Meanwhile, variable renewable energy like solar and wind aren’t baseload sources to begin with and become expensive when coupled with battery storage. Timely and strategic exposures, or a well-calculated, flexible, and balanced energy mix, as articulated by the Philippine Energy Plan, is the way to go. And coal still has a role to play in the future of the Philippine energy mix. Subscribe to our daily newsletter By providing an email address.
