Voting closed on Saturday evening in most polling centres throughout Ghana, bringing to an end the presidential and legislative elections poised to be a litmus test for democracy in a region shaken by extremist violence and coups. The capital, Accra, was almost a ghost town for much of the day. Even vibrant Oxford Street, one of the city’s commercial hubs, saw little activity on the day that Ghanaians went to the polls to elect a new president and 276 legislators. About 18.7 million people are registered to vote in the West African country hit by one of the worst economic crises in a generation. However, the two main candidates offer little hope for change for the nation. Early results were expected late on Saturday. The first official results will be released by Tuesday. Ghana used to be a poster child for democracy in the region. At a time when coups threatened democracy in West Africa, Ghana has emerged as a beacon of democratic stability with a history of peaceful elections. It had also been an economic powerhouse, priding itself on its economic development. But in recent years, it has struggled with a profound economic crisis, including surging inflation and a lack of jobs. According to an opinion poll released earlier this year by Afrobarometer, a research group, 82% of Ghanaians feel their country is headed in the wrong direction. Although 12 candidates are running to become Ghana’s next president, Saturday’s election – like previous ones since the return of multiparty politics in 1992 – has emerged as a two-horse race. Vice president Mahamudu Bawumia is the candidate of the ruling New Patriotic Party, or NPP, which has struggled to resolve the economic crisis. He faces off against former president John Dramani Mahama, the leader of the main opposition party National Democratic Congress, or NDC. He was voted out in 2016 after failing to deliver on promises for the economy. Opinion polls point at a potential comeback for Mr Mahama. A local research company, Global InfoAnalytics says he is projected to get 52.2% of the vote, followed by Mr Bawumia, with 41.4%.

The decision by Tesco, Musgrave and the BWG Group came after a woman who said Mr McGregor raped her won a civil claim for damages against him. Nikita Hand, who accused the sportsman of raping her in a Dublin hotel in December 2018, won her claim against him for damages in a case at the High Court in the Irish capital. In a statement, a spokesman for Musgrave said: “Musgrave can confirm these products are no longer available to our store network.” The network includes SuperValu, Centra, Daybreak and Mace. The policies, which begin in 2025, follow more than a year of study involving medicine, science, sport physiology and gender policy law. The updated policies would rule out eligibility for Hailey Davidson, who missed qualifying for the U.S. Women's Open this year by one shot and came up short in LPGA Q-school. Davidson, who turned 32 on Tuesday, began hormone treatments when she was in her early 20s in 2015 and in 2021 underwent gender-affirming surgery, which was required under the LPGA's previous gender policy. She had won this year on a Florida mini-tour called NXXT Golf until the circuit announced in March that players had to be assigned female at birth. “Can't say I didn't see this coming,” Davidson wrote Wednesday on an Instagram story. “Banned from the Epson and the LPGA. All the silence and people wanting to stay ‘neutral’ thanks for absolutely nothing. This happened because of all your silence.” LPGA commissioner Mollie Marcoux Samaan, who is resigning in January, said the new gender policy "is reflective of an extensive, science-based and inclusive approach." By making it to the second stage of Q-school, Davidson would have had very limited status on the Epson Tour, the pathway to the LPGA. The LPGA and USGA say their policies were geared toward being inclusive of gender identities and expression while striving for equity in competition. The LPGA said its working group of experts advised that the effects of male puberty allowed for competitive advantages in golf compared with players who had not gone through puberty. “Our policy is reflective of an extensive, science-based and inclusive approach,” said LPGA Commissioner Mollie Marcoux Samaan, who announced Monday that she is resigning in January. "The policy represents our continued commitment to ensuring that all feel welcome within our organization, while preserving the fairness and competitive equity of our elite competitions.” Mike Whan, the former LPGA commissioner and now CEO of the USGA, said it developed the updated policy independently and later discovered it was similar to those used by swimming, track and field, and other sports. United States Golf Association CEO Mike Whan said the new policy will prevent anyone from having "a competitive advantage based on their gender." “It starts with competitive fairness as the North star,” Whan said in a telephone interview. “We tried not to get into politics, or state by state or any of that stuff. We just simply said, ‘Where would somebody — at least medically today — where do we believe somebody would have a competitive advantage in the field?’ And we needed to draw a line. “We needed to be able to walk into any women's event and say with confidence that nobody here has a competitive advantage based on their gender. And this policy delivers that.” The “Competitive Fairness Gender Policy” for the USGA takes effect for the 2025 championship season that starts with the U.S. Women's Amateur Four-Ball on May 10-14. Qualifying began late this year, though there were no transgender players who took part. “Will that change in the years to come as medicine changes? The buildings are going up at the Texas A&M-Fort Worth campus, but the brick-and-mortar is only part of the story. “This is not going to be just a four-year college campus,” said John Goff, the founder and chairman of Crescent Real Estate who, along with JP Morgan Chase & Co. leader Elaine Agather, helped bring Texas A&M to Fort Worth. “This is much more than that.” Goff, joined by others from Fort Worth, toured some of the top innovation districts in the U.S. to understand the impact the school could have on the city. One place they visited was Kendall Square, the area around the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Boston. Kendall Square is considered one of the key innovation districts in the country and well-known for its so-called “bump factor,” where interactions between innovators frequently turn into technology advancements and business opportunities. That’s one reason Texas A&M and Fort Worth brought in U3 Advisors on the project. U3 Advisors works with universities to help build innovation districts, with experience in Pennsylvania, Maryland and Chicago. Texas A&M-Fort Worth is their first project in the Lone Star State. Omar Blaik, CEO of U3 Advisors, said an innovation district must feature much more than simply a university. “Innovation districts are mixed-use districts that are productive, not just consumptive,” he said. “It needs to have life; it needs to have restaurants; it needs to have housing; it needs to have office and commercial; it needs to have research and university settings.” Get essential daily news for the Fort Worth area. That mixed-use district creates an urban fabric that attracts not just top researchers, but also companies that want to tap into the activity and excitement in the area. “A mixed-use district around the university has the ability to create this third place,” Blaik said. “It’s not the classroom, it’s not the lab. It’s really this third place that allows for the energy of an institution to be leveraged in the marketplace.” U3’s name reflects the “third space” between universities and their urban settings. Goff said the city has already gleaned some economic development from Texas A&M’s plans here. ProbablyMonsters, a video game studio , headquartered in Bellevue, Washington, received $1.5 million in incentives from the city to set up an office in Fort Worth and hire up to 300 employees. Texas A&M-Fort Worth was key to landing that project, said Goff, who is an investor in the company. Blaik said U3 Advisors sometimes works in cities looking to rebuild their economic fortunes. Fort Worth is different, he said, in that the city is on the upswing economically. “What Fort Worth is doing is establishing a new footprint and you have the opportunity to build it here in a way that you cannot build it in other places,” he said. Fort Worth ranks high as manufacturing center Fort Worth ranks eighth among best cities for manufacturing jobs. About 7.6% of the area’s workforce is involved in manufacturing, according to the study conducted by ABM Equipment , a system design, integration and service company based in Washington state. The study ranked the top industrial job centers in the U.S. using key metrics including total manufacturing employment, annual wages, manufacturing jobs as a percentage of the workforce, and employment growth rates. Data for research was taken from the U.S. Census Bureau and U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics to provide an assessment of each city’s industrial strength and potential. These metrics were weighted and combined to create a 100-point scoring system, highlighting both current and future industrial growth of the cities. San Jose, Tulsa and Los Angeles were the top three cities, but Texas has three cities in the top 10. Houston came in fourth and Austin seventh, just ahead of Fort Worth. Verde owned Neat Kitchen + Bar, which has locations in both Oswego and Westmont. In a Facebook post, Westmont Chamber of Commerce and Tourism Bureau Board Chair Becky Rheintgen said his death leaves behind “a deep void in the hearts of his family, friends and everyone who had the privilege of knowing him. “Matt was more than a business owner — he was a core part of our business community, a passionate entrepreneur and a generous supporter of local initiatives,” Rheintgen said in the post. “Through Neat Kitchen + Bar, he brought people together, fostering a sense of community and creating a warm and welcoming space where countless memories were made.” According to the Oswego Police Department, Verde was attempting to walk across an access road in the shopping center at 2700 Route 34 on Nov. 21 at around 9:40 p.m. when he was hit by a car. Preliminary investigations indicated that a 17-year-old girl was driving southbound on the access road between the Meijer parking lot and the stores in the 1400 block of Douglas Road when she struck Verde, who was crossing the access road westbound, police said. According to the police’s news release, a witness reported seeing a man wearing dark clothing heading diagonally through the parking lot shortly before the crash. No charges have been filed, and the crash is still under investigation, officials said. The girl was not injured in the crash, but it left Verde with serious, life-threatening injuries, which he succumbed to on Sunday, police said. A GoFundMe campaign was set up over the weekend to support Verde. Now, those proceeds are set to go to his family for upcoming arrangements and expenses, according to an update on the fundraiser’s webpage. The campaign was set up by Carrie and Steve Fleck, owners of Dolce Restaurant and Wine Bar in Westmont, after “the request of so many and with the approval from the family,” the two wrote on the campaign’s webpage. As of Tuesday afternoon, the campaign had raised $73,664, surpassing its $50,000 goal with 665 donations. In an update to both the GoFundMe campaign webpage and the restaurant’s Facebook page, the Flecks said that they “are devastated by this ending but know that Matt’s work is not done as he watches over all of us from heaven.” Other local restaurants also remembered Verde in their own Facebook posts. At its current pace, the Nittany Lions won’t match last season’s takeaway total. In 13 games last season, Penn State created 24 turnovers but only have 14 this season. Franklin believes creating more turnovers by causing fumbles and making plays to intercept passes would give the team a huge lift. “We’re playing some of the best defensive football in all of college football right now,” Franklin said. “The first thing is, shots on goal is what we call it, is making sure the second man in is stripping and punching at the football. A few years ago, we were causing a decent amount of fumbles but not recovering them, so making sure we’re doing both at a high level. We’re doing a pretty good job of (pass breakups) and contested catches, and we’ve got to come down with a few of those. There’s been a couple that are 50/50 balls, and the way the rules are in college football, the tie goes to the offense. “We’ve got to find a way to win a few more of those, and we’ve got to get other guys involved rather than Jaylen Reed. J-Reed’s been the one guy that’s really disruptive in terms of turning the ball over. (AP) — Police arrested a 16-year-old student after he allegedly brought a gun to his high school in Kenosha, the second time in less than a month that someone has apparently tried to bring a firearm into one of the southeastern Wisconsin city's schools. Indian Trail High School and Academy's resource officer learned Monday that a photo of the student with a gun had been posted on social media, police said in a statement Wednesday. The student was located, escorted to an office, arrested and taken to the police department. Investigators later determined that the student had hidden a gun in a “sensitive area," making it difficult for officers to locate the weapon initially. The statement did not elaborate, and a police spokesperson did not immediately respond to an email from The Associated Press seeking more details late Wednesday afternoon.
