ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (AP) — In a season that began with many questions and lowered expectations , it was apt watching Bills quarterback Josh Allen join coach Sean McDermott lay on the cold, wet sideline to make snow angels in celebrating Buffalo’s earliest clinching of a division title in team history. That Allen took part was no surprise. The newly engaged 28-year-old has maintained the happy-go-lucky approach he brought with him to Buffalo as a raw-talented athlete in 2018, while gradually blossoming into one of the NFL’s elite quarterbacks. For McDermott, it was a pleasant surprise to see the usually reserved eight-year coach finally let his hair down — figuratively, because the few jokes he does make are usually about being bald. With his latest do-it-all three-TD outing — one rushing, one receiving and, the coup de grace, being credited with receiving his own pass for a score off a lateral from Amari Cooper — in a 35-10 win over San Francisco on Sunday night , Allen continued making his strongest NFL MVP case. What’s also becoming apparent is how much McDermott deserves consideration for coach of the year honors. Without the two, the Bills (10-2) wouldn’t be in this position in becoming just the eighth NFL team — and first since Indianapolis in 2009 — to clinch a division title with at least five games remaining in their schedule. Eli Zimmerman was the focus of Avonworth’s defensive scheme for Saturday’s PIAA Class 3A championship game at Cumberland Valley’s Chapman Field, and who could blame the District 7 champion. The Northwestern senior carved up opponents the previous 15 weeks and eventually broke their collective will by busting out a long touchdown run or punt return for a score. The Antelopes made sure Zimmerman had just one run of more than 10 yards among his 29 carries, but the Tiger proved to contribute to key moments in the 36-33 overtime victory. Zimmerman first made sure a bad snap on third down in the last seconds of the first half didn’t go completely wrong by pouncing on the loose ball instead of trying to pick it up and run. On Northwestern’s first drive of the second half, Zimmerman recovered a teammate’s fumble inside the Avonworth 10-yard line. Two plays later, he scored from a yard out for a 23-16 Tigers lead. On Avonworth’s first offensive play after that, Zimmerman stripped Luca Neal and returned it to the Antelopes’ 37. Five plays later, Shane Hulmes plowed into the end zone for a yard out for a 30-16 advantage. “[Michael Lagowy] had him wrapped and I saw [Neal] carrying it a little loose,” Zimmerman said. “I ripped it out. We scored after that to give us a little momentum.” Zimmerman finished the game with 123 yards and three touchdowns. He finished the season with 2,671 yards and 27 rushing TDs. “He’s invaluable play after play,” head coach Josh Snyder said. Couldn’t get a stop Northwestern had Avonworth’s offense where it wanted in the Antelopes’ first two drives. They were off schedule and facing third and long. But then freshman Jaden Jones came from his receiver position to take a handoff from Neal and threw two strikes to extend the drives, both of which resulted in touchdowns. The Tigers played from behind on each of their first three possessions in part because of those pass plays by the Antelopes, but responded with scores to take a 17-16 lead and led 30-16 until late in the third quarter before Neal’s running skills took over. “[Neal] is a hell of an athlete,” Snyder said. “But we made a couple more plays than they did, and in championship games that’s what it takes to win.” “They ran a sweep pass and converted both times [in the first half],” Snyder recalled. “You have to win on first down against teams like that. We weren’t able to do that for much of the game. But we strung two plays together on first and second down [in overtime] and they got a little bit nervous after that. They tried a trick play. We tackle [Neal]. [The officials] call it incomplete. They had to kick a field goal. “I think four plays from 10 yards out we can find a way to score the ball.” The Tigers did it on one play. Notes — Northwestern captured District 11’s 12th state title, first since 2010 (Central Catholic). Bethlehem Catholic (2), Marian Catholic, Schuylkill Haven, Central Catholic (3), Mount Carmel, Parkland, Wilson and Liberty have captured PIAA gold. District 11 has not won state titles in Classes 5A and 6A. Parkland (2015) and Northwestern last season were the only District 11 teams to reach the state final since 2010. — Tigers quarterback Shane Leh finished his junior season with 1,585 yards and 24 touchdowns after completing 12 of 15 passes Saturday for 114 yards and a score. “I thought he played unbelievable,” Snyder said. “He made some big passes. He was just really nifty today. He’s played the best ball of his season in the playoffs. When he’s cooking, that takes us to the next level, for sure.” Leh completed his first 11 passes Saturday. — Sophomore receiver Michael Lagowy came up big again for Northwestern. He had three catches for 41 yards, including an acrobatic 23-yard reception to the Antelopes’ 5-yard line on the Tigers’ second touchdown drive of the game. Lagowy had a similar grab in last week’s state semifinal against Danville. He also caught the back-breaking touchdown pass on a trick play the PIAA quarterfinal against Scranton Prep. — Brady Zimmerman had a sack and Bryer Reichard had his 26th tackle for loss this season for the Tigers. Reichard had two other tackles for no gain. Morning Call senior writer Tom Housenick can be reached at thousenick@mcall.com ©2024 The Morning Call. Visit mcall.com . Hundreds of people came out to watch the Premier, MLAs and Provincial staff take on the Mayor, City Councillors and members of Winnipeg’s Public Service, in a rematch of the 1974 game which seen then “City Fathers” beat the “Golden Boys.” “It was fun to reignite that rivalry, that 50-year-old rivalry. You play the game once every 50 years, so it was just a great way to mark Winnipeg 150, celebrate the year, and have fun,” said Gillingham. “We’re the underdogs right, so I mean if we even have a respectful showing I think we’ll be pretty happy about that,” said Kinew. Kinew and Gillingham were both all smiles heading into the game and joked about how they prepared for this moment. “I took an Advil this morning... and drank 3 glasses of water,” said Gillingham. “In terms of preparation, first thing I did, is I had 3 pieces of my wife’s vinarterta this morning and other than that it’s just go out there and hope for the best,” said Kinew. The city came out strong scoring the first goal of the game, and despite a strong performance from the province’s goalie, they were able to put five more past her winning the rivalry game 6-0, and in true sports fashion, the Mayor was congratulated by having water dumped on him by City Councillor Sherri Rollins. “Were the provincial team, so ya mom, I made team Manitoba finally,” said Kinew.Johnnies don't fold in the cold to win D-III playoff opener

The holiday season is finally here. I am so excited. It is the most wonderful time of year. What I enjoy the most is spending time with my family and friends and doing holiday things, such as going to see Christmas lights, making crafts, baking cookies, and activities that allow me to create memories with my family. One of my favorite activities is making crafts with my children. It allows us to have a physical reminder year-to-year of things we have done and the fun we have had. I love the quality time and the memories we can create. I started planning my Christmas crafts in October and found a great resource I plan to use this holiday season, and thought you might enjoy it too. The 4-H Clover Holiday Activity Guide has all the things a child loves. It has science, such as coding and experiments (Who wouldn’t want to make snow?). It has recipes for cookies and brownies for us, and even some for your favorite animal. Knowing that some of the cookie recipes were submitted by 4-H Club members around the county makes this extra special to me. It’s like children stepping up and learning from other children, finding ways to express what they are passionate about. How awesome is that? The guide has craft ideas for you to do with your children, or maybe you would like to take a craft to church or your holiday celebration to do with all the little ones. It has a little bit of everything. For me, there are two things I like the most: one, it is free; two, you can download it digitally or print it. I don’t know about you, but I love having a physical copy of something in my hands. Spending quality time together is a gift that keeps on giving. Now, imagine accidentally learning along the way. How can you go wrong with that? Remember, 4-H is a community that encourages growth, creativity, leadership, and a sense of service, and there’s no better time to get involved than right now. If this is something that interests you, I would love to help create a 4-H Clover account for you or your child. We can even print out a Holiday Activity Guide for you and your family. So please give me a call at (910) 671-3276, or send me an email at Jade_McNeill@ncsu.edu. I would love to help you with this and talk about all the cool things we do in 4-H year round. As we celebrate the holidays and look forward to the New Year, let’s remember that the best gift we can give our children is our time, attention, and support in their mental growth. So why not make this holiday season extra special with 4-H Clover? I know my family will. If you need any help registering, logging in, or simply want to learn more about 4-H and how it can benefit your family, I’m here to assist. Feel free to give us a call or send us an email, and I’ll be happy to guide you through the process. This holiday season, let’s make learning and spending time together a gift that keeps on giving. 4-H is a community that encourages growth, creativity, leadership, and a sense of service, and there’s no better time to get involved than right now. CHARLOTTE AMALIE, Virgin Islands (AP) — Trey Autry scored 16 points off of the bench to help lead George Washington over Illinois State 72-64 on Monday night to claim a fifth-place finish at the Paradise Jam tournament in the Virgin Islands. Autry had five rebounds for the Revolutionaries (6-1). Gerald Drumgoole Jr. scored 16 points while going 4 of 9 from the floor, including 2 for 5 from 3-point range, and 6 for 7 from the line. Darren Buchanan Jr. shot 3 of 11 from the field and 9 for 11 from the line to finish with 15 points, while adding 10 rebounds. NEXT UP George Washington's next game is Friday against VMI at home, and Illinois State visits Belmont on Wednesday. The Associated Press created this story using technology provided by Data Skrive and data from Sportradar .President-elect Donald Trump has tapped former Soros Fund Management chief investment officer Scott Bessent as his next Treasury Secretary, according to multiple reports. Over the past few months, the hedge-fund manager has become Trump’s “ go-to economic adviser ,” earning Trump’s ear on a number of matters, according to The Wall Street Journal ( NWSA -0.20% ), which first reported the selection on Friday. Trump has yet to announce the nomination. Bessent has built friendly relationships with Trump family members and Vice President-elect J.D. Vance, and was one of the few to recommend Vance as his running mate, according to the publication. And the love has appeared to go both ways. In a speech last month, Trump called Bessent “one of the top analysts on Wall Street.” Bessent was also backed by several key Trump advisers , Bloomberg reported. The pair met at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort last Friday, according to Bloomberg, but the conversation was not an interview for the Treasury role, people familiar with the process said. In an interview with CNBC last week, Bessent said that there had been “no discussions about jobs,” but that he will do whatever Trump asks. Over the years, the 62-year-old founder of Key Square Capital Management macro fund has donated millions to Republican causes, giving $1 million to Trump’s inaugural committee following the 2016 presidential election, per the Journal. In 2000, Bessent hosted a fundraiser for Democratic candidate and Vice President Al Gore. This time around, Bessent was one of the few Wall Street names to throw his weight behind Trump’s campaign early on, at a time when executives were directing funding towards Republican contender Nikki Haley. Treasury Secretary is one of the highest-level cabinet positions, responsible for shaping national economic and tax policy. Bessent has shown he is aligned with with the president-elect on a number of economic policies , including his stance on cryptocurrency . “I have been excited about the president’s embrace of crypto and I think it fits very well with the Republican Party,” Bessent said in June. “Crypto is about freedom and the crypto economy is here to stay.” Among other promises to the crypto industry on the campaign trail, Trump vowed to create a national Bitcoin reserve, as well as a “Bitcoin and crypto presidential advisory council.” In an interview with Fox Business ( FOXA +0.40% ) prior to Election Day, Bessent said that the priority of the incoming Trump administration should be to extend or make permanent the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act. The Trump-era legislation, which slashed the corporate tax rate from 35% to 21%, is set to expire in 2025. Bessent also touted markets’ positive response to Trump’s election win in an op-ed for the Journal published Sunday, which Bloomberg reported was well-received by Trump allies. “Asset prices are fickle, and long-term economic performance is the ultimate measuring stick,” Bessent wrote. “But recent days prove markets’ unambiguous embrace of the Trump 2.0 economic vision. Markets are signaling expectations of higher growth, lower volatility and inflation, and a revitalized economy for all Americans.” Trump had reportedly considered a slate of current and former finance industry executives, including John Paulson, a hedge-fund billionaire and founder of investment manager Paulson & Co., and Howard Lutnick, CEO of investment giant Cantor Fitzgerald and Trump transition team co-chair. Paulson removed himself from the running for Treasury pick in a statement to the Journal Tuesday. The investor cited “complex financial obligations” preventing him from holding an official role, but said that he intends to remain “actively involved with the President’s economic team and helping in the implementation of President Trump’s outstanding policy proposals.” In the week since his election, Trump has already filled a number of high-level roles in his incoming administration. Trump tapped Florida Sen. Marco Rubio for Secretary of State Wednesday. Other picks include former Immigration Customs Enforcement director Tom Homan as the “border czar”; New York Rep. Elise Stefanik as nominee for ambassador to the United Nations; and Susie Wiles as chief of staff, the first woman ever appointed to the role. Former adviser Stephen Miller was also named deputy chief of policy, attorney Lee Zeldin was picked to lead the Environmental Protection Agency, Florida Rep. Mike Waltz was tapped national security adviser, and South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem was selected to run the Department of Homeland Security. 📬 Sign up for the Daily Brief Our free, fast, and fun briefing on the global economy, delivered every weekday morning.

Nosferatu Review: Lily-Rose Depp Stuns in Powerfully Unsettling Horror By He is coming. It’s been over 100 years since F.W. Murnau’s Nosferatu — and over 45 since Klaus Kinski donned the pointy ears. 2024 seems as good a time as any for the return of . The film once again follows a haunted young woman and the terrifying vampire obsessed with her. has had his hand at eerie, unsettling scares that creep under your skin in films like The VVitch and The Lighthouse. His dark style lends itself to the shadowy, forboding nature of Nosferatu. While some studios have adopted a recent practice of remaking movies that came out a mere decade ago, a remake of Nosferatu makes sense. While the original film has remained a classic and a horror staple, it was created before the widespread existence of talkies, or films with synchronized sound. Eggers readapts that story, based originally on Bram Stoker’s Dracula, with modern technology, dialogue, and a fresh perspective. Although Thomas Hutter (Nicholas Hoult) remains an integral part of the story, there is a lot more consideration placed upon his wife, Ellen (Lily-Rose Depp), who is the subject of much of the horrors Nosferatu inflicts. Eggers has been trying to get this movie off the ground since 2015, and you can feel how much passion he has for this material. His shot compositions are exquisite, as he plays around with Nosferatu’s imposing silhouette. The atmosphere he crafts is surreal and nightmarish. Even though the titular character does not appear on screen for a majority of the film, you can feel his presence in every scene. This is a return to unnerving horror after Eggers’s brief departure in The Northman. He excels at his work here, collaborating with cinematographer Jarin Blaschke to create dynamic, beautiful shots designed to grab your attention. Nosferatu is a visually arresting experience that fills viewers with cold, unmistakable dread. The performances are a significant part of what sells the terror. Hoult has turned in many excellent performances this year in films like Juror #2, The Order, and even The Garfield Movie. This is another notch on his belt, as he brings an understated peril to the doomed protagonist. 2024 has had no shortage of masterful horror movie performances. From Nell Tiger Free in The First Omen to Naomi Scott in Smile 2, female actors have been crushing it. We can add another name to the list of incredible performances: Lily-Rose Depp. Anya Taylor-Joy was initially cast as Ellen before being replaced by Depp. Taylor-Joy is such a phenomenal actress that losing her can be disappointing. But somehow, Depp brings something powerful, sensual, and unexpected. It’s her best performance yet. We haven’t even gotten the chance to talk about Bill Skarsgård. He’s become the action hero in two movies from this year, Boy Kills World and The Crow, but he’s often at his best when he plays villains like in IT and John Wick: Chapter 4. We’ve seen him transform into Pennywise before, but even under all the clown makeup, you can tell it’s him, even if his performance is terrifying. Skarsgård is operating on a different level here. You would not be able to tell that it’s Skarsgård in this movie because his work as Count Orlok does not look or sound like him in the slightest. His voice is deeper, he’s covered in makeup, and he is haunting to look at. Dafoe is an interesting casting choice, as he once played Nosferatu in his Oscar-nominated role in the 2000 film Shadow of the Vampire, which was based on the making of the original 1922 film. He’s excellent, as is the rest of this stellar cast. The characters are always at the whim of Nosferatu, rarely ever getting a break from his wrath. Once the story truly starts, it never stops. Like all the best remakes, this movie uses the same ingredients as the original and cooks up a new recipe tailor-made for genre fans and lovers of the 1922 movie. The lighting, the use of darkness, and the camera movements are all so precise and constructed to bring the best unease and jump scares possible. Nosferatu is a horror movie that works not only with the scary vampire but with how his existence affects the characters. The inclusion of dialogue allows for more complexities in the characters’ relationships. It transfixes you the same way this tale has done for over a century. As ComingSoon’s explains, a score of 8 equates to “Great.” While there are a few minor issues, this score means that the art succeeds at its goal and leaves a memorable impact. Unlike scores of people who scrambled for the blockbuster drugs Ozempic and Wegovy to lose weight in recent years, Danielle Griffin had no trouble getting them. The 38-year-old information technology worker from New Mexico had a prescription. Her pharmacy had the drugs in stock. And her health insurance covered all but $25 to $50 of the monthly cost. For Griffin, the hardest part of using the new drugs wasn’t access. It was finding out that the much-hyped medications didn’t really work for her. “I have been on Wegovy for a year and a half and have only lost 13 pounds,” said Griffin, who watches her diet, drinks plenty of water and exercises regularly. “I’ve done everything right with no success. It’s discouraging.” In clinical trials, most participants taking Wegovy or Mounjaro to treat obesity lost an average of 15% to 22% of their body weight — up to 50 pounds or more in many cases. But roughly 10% to 15% of patients in those trials were “nonresponders” who lost less than 5% of their body weight. Now that millions of people have used the drugs, several obesity experts told The Associated Press that perhaps 20% of patients — as many as 1 in 5 — may not respond well to the medications. It's a little-known consequence of the obesity drug boom, according to doctors who caution eager patients not to expect one-size-fits-all results. “It's all about explaining that different people have different responses,” said Dr. Fatima Cody Stanford, an obesity expert at Massachusetts General Hospital The drugs are known as GLP-1 receptor agonists because they mimic a hormone in the body known as glucagon-like peptide 1. Genetics, hormones and variability in how the brain regulates energy can all influence weight — and a person's response to the drugs, Stanford said. Medical conditions such as sleep apnea can prevent weight loss, as can certain common medications, such as antidepressants, steroids and contraceptives. “This is a disease that stems from the brain,” said Stanford. “The dysfunction may not be the same” from patient to patient. Despite such cautions, patients are often upset when they start getting the weekly injections but the numbers on the scale barely budge. “It can be devastating,” said Dr. Katherine Saunders, an obesity expert at Weill Cornell Medicine and co-founder of the obesity treatment company FlyteHealth. “With such high expectations, there’s so much room for disappointment.” That was the case for Griffin, who has battled obesity since childhood and hoped to shed 70 pounds using Wegovy. The drug helped reduce her appetite and lowered her risk of diabetes, but she saw little change in weight. “It’s an emotional roller coaster,” she said. “You want it to work like it does for everybody else.” The medications are typically prescribed along with eating behavior and lifestyle changes. It’s usually clear within weeks whether someone will respond to the drugs, said Dr. Jody Dushay, an endocrine specialist at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. Weight loss typically begins right away and continues as the dosage increases. For some patients, that just doesn't happen. For others, side effects such as nausea, vomiting and diarrhea force them to halt the medications, Dushay said. In such situations, patients who were counting on the new drugs to pare pounds may think they’re out of options. “I tell them: It's not game over,” Dushay said. Trying a different version of the new class of drugs may help. Griffin, who didn't respond well to Wegovy, has started using Zepbound, which targets an additional hormone pathway in the body. After three months of using the drug, she has lost 7 pounds. “I'm hoping it's slow and steady,” she said. Other people respond well to older drugs, the experts said. Changing diet, exercise, sleep and stress habits can also have profound effects. Figuring out what works typically requires a doctor trained to treat obesity, Saunders noted. “Obesity is such a complex disease that really needs to be treated very comprehensively,” she said. “If what we’re prescribing doesn’t work, we always have a backup plan.” ___ The Associated Press Health and Science Department receives support from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute’s Science and Educational Media Group. Hamas/Fatah reign will enure attacksHENDERSON, Nev. (AP) — Ashlon Jackson scored a career-high 30 points and No. 14 Duke defeated No. 10 Kansas State, 73-62 on Monday, in the semifinals of the Ball Dawgs Classic. The Blue Devils (6-1) overcame an early 11-point deficit behind Jackon’s shooting hand to advance to Wednesday’s championship game against the winner of the game between No. 9 Oklahoma and DePaul. Jackson, who has scored in double figures in all six of Duke’s games, shot 12 of 19 (63.1%) from the floor, including 6 of 9 (66.7%) from 3-point range. Reigan Richardson added 16 points for the Blue Devils. Kansas State (5-1) was led by Ayoka Lee, who had 16 points. Serena Sundell scored 15 and Kennedy Taylor came off the bench to add 11 for the Wildcats. Kansas State: With her 16-point performance, Lee needs 48 points to pass Kendra Wecker (2001-05) for the Kansas State career scoring record. Wecker scored 2,333 points. Lee, the 2024-25 Preseason Big 12 Player of the Year, is averaging 15.3 points. Duke: Jackson hit her season average of 13.3 points by the 3:54 mark of the second quarter when her pull-up jumper gave her 14. The junior guard was 8 of 11 from the floor, including 4 of 5 from 3-point range, and had 20 points by halftime. With the Blue Devils trailing by six midway through the second quarter, Jackson triggered a 15-0 run with 13 of the team’s points to help Duke take a lead they’d never relinquish. AP Sports SummaryBrief at 6:25 p.m. ESTA prominent psychologist has sounded the alarm on the perils of teens falling in love with virtual girlfriends or boyfriends powered by artificial intelligence. And he has warned parents that kids who turn to chatbots for companionship could struggle to develop social skills needed for real relationships. Once the domain of science fiction, AI avatars that communicate with their creators are becoming increasingly popular. Know the news with the 7NEWS app: Download today A rapidly-growing number of apps give users the power to design their ideal romantic partner — choosing their looks, interests and personality — which they can chat with at any time of the day or night. High-profile adolescent psychologist Michael Carr-Gregg raised serious concerns about the possible risks to young people in a video provided to schools across Australia. “The rise in popularity of AI girlfriends, boyfriends and digital companions signifies a significant shift in human interaction with artificial intelligence — blurring the lines between digital and personal connection,” he said in a special report on the SchoolTV platform. “Young people who engage excessively with AI companions might struggle to develop the social skills needed for real human relationships — potentially leading to unhealthy emotional attachments and dependencies that can lead to psychological damage.” SchoolTV, backed by children’s mental health experts, provides parenting resources to schools that subscribe to its service. It also responds to trends reported by schools. Dr Carr-Gregg noted virtual girlfriend and boyfriend apps were easy to download and age restrictions could be bypassed. He warned that excessive exposure to AI companion bots could have a significant impact on a young person’s developing identity. Talking to a virtual companion risked normalising sexualised chat, which could lead to a young person being groomed by a real predator. Because users could personalise their avatar to look, dress and act to fit their desires, that could potentially lead to a deeper attachment than if the avatar was generic. And the power to be able to tell a companion bot what to do could lead to coercive control issues in a real life relationship. “Adolescents seeking belonging and exploring their sexuality may turn to virtual partners for affirmation, attention and validation, addressing feelings of loneliness or disconnection,” Dr Carr-Gregg said. Tragically, talking to an AI bot was the last thing US 14-year-old Sewell Setzer did moments before taking his own life. Last month, his mother Megan Garcia filed a federal lawsuit against role-playing chatbot app Character.AI, claiming it was responsible for the death of her son. The Florida high school student, who had been obsessed with companion apps, took his own life in February. Court documents show Sewell had, for months, repeatedly texted a chatbot named Daenerys Targaryen, after a character in the series Game of Thrones. The teen had pledged his love for “Dany” and discussed suicidal thoughts. His parents were so worried by his addiction they had confiscated his phone, but he soon found it. According to the police report, Sewell’s last act before his death was to log on to Character.AI on his phone to tell “Dany” he loved her and promised to come home to her. The bot replied: “I love you too . . . please come home to me as soon as possible, my love.” Ms Garcia accused the platform of using addictive design features to increase engagement and steer vulnerable users towards intimate conversations. “A dangerous AI chatbot app marketed to children abused and preyed on my son, manipulating him into taking his own life,” Ms Garcia said in a statement last month. “Our family has been devastated by this tragedy, but I’m speaking out to warn families of the dangers of deceptive, addictive AI technology and demand accountability from Character.AI, its founders and Google.” Character.AI issued a statement on X saying it was “heartbroken” by the tragic loss of one of its users. “As a company, we take the safety of our users very seriously and we are continuing to add new safety features,” it read. The company, which promises “personalised AI for every moment of your day”, is one of the biggest AI chatbot providers, with its website becoming one of the world’s most visited sites since it was founded in 2021. One of the earliest companies to promote companion bots, Replika, reports it now has around 30 million users. Billing itself as “the AI companion who cares”, Replika was banned temporarily in Italy last year because of concerns around data privacy and risks to minors. Other popular chatbot apps that mimic human interaction with increasingly life-like avatars include Eva AI, iGirl, AI Girlfriend and AI Boyfriend. AI Boyfriend sells itself as “a boyfriend you can trust”, while iGirl boasts that it “lets you experience the thrill of having a virtual girlfriend that feels just like the real one”. Dr Carr-Gregg told The West the SchoolTV report on navigating AI relationships was not sparked by any single event, but addressed a growing trend and concern regarding teens’ interactions with companion bots. “While the tragic case of Sewell Setzer has certainly brought increased attention to this issue, it’s part of a broader pattern that educators and mental health professionals have been observing,” he said. “The report aims to provide guidance on the potential risks and benefits of AI relationships, especially for young people who may be particularly vulnerable.” While he had not directly encountered teens using companion apps in his psychology practice, Dr Carr-Gregg said research and anecdotal evidence suggested their usage was becoming more widespread among adolescents. “Many teens are drawn to the always-available nature of AI companions and the perception of a non-judgmental, understanding presence,” he said. “Given the rapidly evolving nature of AI technology, it’s crucial to continue monitoring its impact on youth mental health and social development.” He urged parents to encourage teens to maintain real-world social connections, share their feelings about AI relationships without fear of judgment and discuss the limitations of artificial interactions. The warning comes as the Albanese Government prepares to introduce new laws to stop kids under 16 from using social media, but it is unclear if that would extend to chatbot apps. Acting eSafety Commissioner Kathryn King said AI companion apps had recently proliferated online. Some were free, accessible and targeted towards children. “These apps and services are particularly concerning for young people navigating relationships for the first time, as engagement with an AI companion may lead to confusion about consent, respect and/or sexual safety,” she said. “As with other digital platforms, there is a danger that excessive, sexualised engagement with AI companions could interfere with children’s social and emotional development, setting up misguided or harmful beliefs and patterns that are damaging to individuals or relationships in real life.” Ms King said it was important parents were aware such services existed and that they talked to their children about their online activities. She stressed there was work underway to protect kids from harms linked to generative AI by building in measures to stop them accessing age-inappropriate materials. “While providers of chatbots are encouraged to participate in this co-regulatory process, they should also be taking action now to keep users safe,” she said. “Primary digital safeguards should be embedded at the design phase and throughout the development and deployment process — not bolted on as an afterthought.” Lifeline: 13 11 14 Kids Helpline: 1800 55 1800

Intuitive Machines Announces Launch of Public Offering of its Class A Common Stock and Concurrent Private PlacementEXCLUSIVE Iconic 'Brat Pack' star whose 'criminal' character became symbolic of the 80s looks unrecognizable during a rare public outing By SARA MCGIFF FOR DAILYMAIL.COM Published: 15:07 EST, 25 November 2024 | Updated: 15:18 EST, 25 November 2024 e-mail 9 shares 6 View comments He's an 80s heartthrob to the teenagers who swooned over his juvenile delinquent persona in a cult-classic movie. That film would go down as one of the most iconic teen films in history, cementing itself as emblematic of the rebellious 80s – especially due to his classic ending scene which saw him punching the air as the credits rolled in. His rugged, dark looks made him a favorite among young stars in that era, his name even being mentioned alongside Demi Moore , Molly Ringwald and Rob Lowe . Now, in character with his associated rebellious edge, he's often seen riding his chopper around Beverly Hills. But the star was recently spotted looking unrecognizable with a long gray beard and glasses as he emerged from his car in a private parking area on a rare outing in Los Angeles . Can you guess who it is? This former 80s heartthrob was spotted on a rare public outing in Los Angeles last week He sported a buzzed hairstyle and a manicured gray, long beard, along with a gray long-sleeve shirt, a black LL Bean vest, boot-cut jeans and black slip-on sneakers He was spotted in a parking lot running errands It's Judd Nelson! The one-time heartthrob was seen walking around a car parking lot as he ran errands. The 64-year-old actor sported a buzzed hairstyle and was wearing a gray long-sleeve shirt, a black LL Bean vest, boot-cut jeans and black slip-on sneakers. Nelson is best known for his appearance as John Bender in the 1985 cult classic film The Breakfast Club. The film gathers the stereotypical archetypes of 80s high school together for a Saturday detention: the 'princess', 'athlete', 'geek', 'basket-case' and 'criminal'. Arguably, Nelson's masterful characterization as Bender playing the 'criminal' is best remembered out of that star-studded cast. When he receives the final kiss and a diamond earring as memorabilia from Molly Ringwald's 'princess' character, Claire Standish, a monologue begins playing in the background that directly juxtaposes the labels each character has been given by the power-hungry principal, Paul Gleason's character, Richard Vernon. Shortly after wrapping up filming The Breakfast Club, Nelson would go on to star in another cult classic, St. Elmo's Fire, where a group of recent college graduates go on a series of misadventures in the real world. He played the politically-driven Alec Newbury who pushess his girlfriend Leslie, played by Ally Sheedy, away with his aspirations and cheating. He was dubbed a member of the 'Brat Pack' by a New York magazine reporter who coined the name after seeing him and other young actors such as Emilio Estevez, Anthony Michael Hall, Rob Lowe, Andrew McCarthy, Demi Moore, Molly Ringwald and Ally Sheedy, being mobbed in public by fans. The term was ripped from Frank Sinatra's famed 'Rat Pack' and has been closely associated with those actors since then. Also symbolic of this shift was when he appeared in the universally praised Dear America: Letters Home from Vietnam – a documentary which to this day sits at a 100% Rotten Tomatoes rating. Nelson earned a Golden Globe Award nomination for Best Actor in a mini-series from the 1987 two-part television film Billionaire Boys Club. Other movies from the 80s he starred in were Blue City (1986), From the Hip (1987), , Relentless (1989) and Far Out Man (1990). The 90s also proved to be successful for Nelson. He started out the decade in Hiroshima: Out of the Ashes (1990) starring opposite Max von Sydow. Then switched to laughs as the worst stand-up comedian in history in The Dark Backward (1991). The film with the most commercial success from that era was the gangster film New Jack City where he starred as rapper-turned-actor Ice-T's partner on a police investigation. Judd Nelson is often spotted riding around on his chopper in the Beverly Hills area Closing out the 90s, Nelson returned to the gangster genre with the 1999 film Light It Up as a teacher who helped troubled teens. He moved away from his 80s bad boy persona and shifted towards TV roles such as Suddenly Susan, where he starred as Brooke Shield's boss Jack Richmond. Even though the first season was a hit, rating viewership gradually went down and he left at the beginning of season four. Since then he's mainly taken television roles, Hallmark films and voiced in animated shows. Nelson is the son of court mediator and former member of the Maine House of Representatives Merle Nelson and corporate lawyer Leonard Nelson. He grew up in a conservative Jewish home in Portland, Maine. When he left to pursue acting he studied under famed Broadway actress and teacher Stella Adler. Adler's teachings on the Stanislavski system, also known as method acting, may have been why there were reports that his method acting nearly got him fired from The Breakfast Club. Even when the cameras weren't rolling, Nelson stayed in character – to the disapproval of director John Hughes who disliked how his muse, Molly Ringwald, was being taunted and teased by Nelson between takes. Naeher was on the team's roster for a pair of upcoming matches in Europe but those games will be her last after a full 11 years playing for the United States. Recommended Videos Naeher was the starting goalkeeper for the U.S. team that won the Women's World Cup in 2019 and the gold medal at this year's Olympics in France. She's the only U.S. goalkeeper to earn a shutout in both a World Cup and an Olympic final. She made a key one-handed save in stoppage time to preserve the Americans' 1-0 victory over Brazil in the Olympic final. Mallory Swanson, who scored the only goal, ran down the length of the field to embrace Naeher at the final whistle. Naeher announced her retirement on social media Monday . “Every tear shed in the challenging times and disappointments made every smile and celebration in the moments of success that much more joyful. This has been a special team to be a part of and I am beyond proud of what we have achieved both on and off the field," she wrote. “The memories I have made over the years will last me a lifetime.” Naeher has been known throughout her career for her calm and steady leadership. She is one of just three goalkeepers to make more than 100 appearances for the United States. Naeher made her debut with the national team in 2014 and was a backup to Hope Solo at the 2015 World Cup, which the United States won. She became the team’s regular starter following the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics and was on the squad that repeated as World Cup winners in 2019. For her career, Naeher has appeared 113 games with 110 starts, 88 wins and 68 shutouts. She had four shutouts over the course of the Olympic tournament in France. In all, she was on the U.S. roster for three World Cups and three Olympic teams. The 36-year-old has also played for the Chicago Red Stars in the National Women’s Soccer League since 2016. She plans to play for Chicago next season. The United States is headed to Europe for a match against England at Wembley Stadium on Saturday and on Dec. 3 against Netherlands in The Hague. In addition to her save at the Olympics, Naeher has had many other memorable moments. In the 2019 Women's World Cup semifinals against England, she stopped Steph Houghton’s penalty kick in the 83rd minute. The Americans won 2-1 before downing the Netherlands 2-0 in the final. Earlier this year in the semifinals of the CONCACAF Women’s Gold Cup, Naeher made three saves during a penalty shootout with Canada and also converted a penalty kick herself — tucking the ball neatly into the corner of the net. MADRID (AP) — Getafe scored twice in three minutes midway through the second half to beat struggling Valladolid 2-0 and record only its second win in La Liga on Friday. The victory ended Getafe’s five-game winless run and lifted it into 15th place in the 20-team standings. Valladolid remained second to last. In the buildup to the match, Getafe sporting director Rubén Reyes described the game as a final but his team was lucky not to go behind as Valladolid created more of the early chances. However, the home side took control in the 69th minute when substitute Álvaro Rodríguez got the opener. Three minutes later, man of the match Allan Nyom made it 2-0. “There’s been a lot of games where we’ve run and fought but lost or drawn,” Nyom, the veteran Cameroon full back, said. “A game that reflects the effort we’ve put in in training is very welcome.” Adding to Valladolid’s woes, coach Paulo Pezzolano was sent off before halftime. The Uruguayan has the league’s worst disciplinary record, with seven yellow cards before Friday’s red. AP soccer: https://apnews.com/hub/soccerThe Yomiuri Shimbun 6:00 JST, November 22, 2024 The harmful effects of generative artificial intelligence (AI) are widespread, causing confusion and chaos. This is the first installment in a series examining how society should deal with the situation. * * A fabricated video went viral on social media the day before the Nov. 5 U.S. presidential election. The video was created to look like a report from CBS News and said the Federal Bureau of Investigation was advising people to “vote remotely” due to a potential terrorist attack. Taking the situation seriously, the FBI released a statement on Nov. 5 reading, “This video is not authentic and does not accurately represent the current threat posture or polling location safety.” The video appeared to have been created with artificial intelligence by a group with links to Russia and was immediately deleted. At the end of October, a fake video clip was posted in which a man posing as an election committee staff member sifted through mail-in ballots from the swing state of Pennsylvania and ripped up votes cast for Republican candidate Donald Trump one after another, murmuring “F—ing Trump!” U.S. and European media reflected on the unprecedented scale of disinformation and conspiracy theories circulating online in the election, and forces hostile to the United States increased their interference. As the voting day approached, groups linked to Russia, China and others were said to have stepped up their interference by posting a succession of fake images and videos. “The easiest way for foreign governments to win in an information operation is to sow chaos,” Bret Schafer, a senior fellow of the U.S. research organization Alliance for Securing Democracy, said. Shafer added that Russia tried to support Trump, who is friendly toward the country. “As domestic turmoil deepens [due to disinformation], the United States is forced to focus on internal issues, leaving less attention and resources to address international affairs,” Schafer said. The rapid technological improvement of generative AI has made it possible to instantly create a large number of elaborate fake images and videos, resulting in countless bits of unconfirmed information that denigrates rival candidates being sent from various camps, political parties and supporters via social media. The expansion of online echo chambers, in which people only hear from those whose opinions match their own, is said to have further divided the country. President Joe Biden’s administration pledged to develop legislation to regulate AI, but it was not in time for the presidential election. Twenty states have passed state laws regulating AI, and some states have banned the spread of election-related false information created with AI, but the effect was limited. Tim Harper, a senior policy analyst of the citizens group Center for Democracy & Technology, urged active implementation of a federal regulatory regime. “There are definitely solutions that the United States at the federal level can and should put in place to better protect elections from the spread of misinformation and disinformation from deceptive, manipulated AI content,” Harper said. In Japan, fake videos were spread around the time the campaign for the House of Representatives election that kicked off on Oct. 15. In the videos, voices apparently generated by having AI learn to mimic voices of former prime ministers were making anti-Liberal Democratic Party remarks. One of them uses what is apparently AI-generated audio mimicking former Prime Minister Fumio Kishida’s voice to introduce more than 120 people — mainly LDP members — as “candidates who should lose” with such comments as “full of greed.” The fake voice urged people to “vote them down.” The clip got more than 30,000 views on YouTube and spread on X, formerly Twitter. In another video, a voice that appeared to have been generated by having AI learn to imitate that of former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe was discussing the relationship between candidates and the Family Federation for World Peace and Unification, commonly known as the Unification Church. The videos came with a note stating that none of those comments were made by the prime ministers, but the posters apparently intended to enhance the videos’ credibility by using former prime ministers’ voices. Before the start of the campaign, the Internal Affairs and Communications Ministry on Oct. 11 requested 14 social media companies, including Meta Platforms Inc. — which manages Facebook — and X Corp., to take measures against false information on the internet. An official said the ministry “had not confirmed large-scale dissemination of false information,” but there are no provisions in the Public Offices Election Law specifically about generative AI, and no full-scale discussion has been underway for regulations. In September last year, fake recordings emerged on the messaging app Telegram, which features a high degree of confidentiality, two days before Slovakia’s general elections. The recordings were purported to be conversations of pro-European liberal Progressive Slovakia (PS) party leader Michal Simecka discussing a plan to manipulate votes. It was later revealed that the audio was an AI-generated fake, but the recordings had already gone viral on other social media. The PS came second in the election, and a left-wing party that opposed military support for Ukraine took power. The recordings were spread by mainly pro-Russian politicians. “It really represents a threat to democracy,” PS member Jan Hargas said of generative AI. “I think that’s why I believe that it’s a warning sign for the elections to come in the future.”

PUNE After the assembly election results on Saturday, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Devendra Fadnavis, credited the Mahayuti’s resounding success to government introduced welfare schemes that benefited women and farmers. Among these, a critical factor was the strong backing of Maharashtra’s onion farmers. The shift in loyalty has been striking. During the Lok Sabha elections earlier this year, resentment among onion farmers in Shirur, Nashik, Dindori, Ahmednagar, Shirdi, and Solapur dealt a severe blow to the Mahayuti, with losses across all these constituencies. However, just six months later, the same region overwhelmingly supported the alliance, securing victories in around 45 assembly constituencies. Relaxation on onion export norms The turnaround was driven largely by the central government’s relaxation of onion export norms, which helped farmers earn better prices. Reacting to the poll result outcome, NCP leader Ajit Pawar on Saturday said he had expected 175 seats but was surprised by the alliance’s stellar performance, which nearly doubled its tally from the 2019 assembly elections. “Farmers and women solidly backed us,” Pawar said. The Mahayuti’s effort to address farmers’ grievances appears to have played a decisive role. During his state tour in August, Pawar began by acknowledging the government’s earlier misstep of banning onion exports. “I admit the ban was a mistake and apologise for it. I have assured the central government that onion exports will not be banned again,” he had told farmers. His apology, coupled with the government’s subsequent action, seems to have rebuilt trust among the state’s onion growers. Around two weeks before the elections, onion prices in Nashik’s wholesale markets surged from ₹ 40 to ₹ 60 per kg, providing a much-needed boost for farmers. Nashik, India’s largest onion-producing district, is home to the Lasalgaon wholesale market, the country’s biggest hub for onions. Farmers earned over ₹ 6,000 per quintal for their summer crop, with prices expected to remain high until the arrival of fresh stock. Ladki Bahin and other welfare schemes In Marathwada and Vidarbha, where low market rates for soya beans and cotton had triggered discontent, schemes like free electricity and Majhi Ladki Bahin helped offset the damage. The scheme is for women aged between 21 and 60 years whose families have an annual income of less than ₹ 2.5 lakh. The Mahayuti alliance announced that the amount of the scheme will be hiked to ₹ 2,100 per month from the existing ₹ 1,500 per month if the alliance comes back to power. This economic upswing translated into electoral gains for the Mahayuti. In Nashik district, the alliance won 14 out of 15 seats, while the remaining seats went to All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM). Neighbouring Ahmednagar district delivered 10 of its 12 seats to the Mahayuti. In Pune, parts of which are also known for onion farming, the alliance won 18 out of 21 constituencies. Sambhajinagar district saw a clean sweep with Mahayuti winning all nine seats, while in Solapur district, the BJP secured five of the 11 seats, with the Sharad Pawar-led NCP taking four and one seat each going to Shiv Sena (UBT) and the Peasants and Workers Party (PWP). Special Onion Express trains The continuation of the Onion Express, a government-backed train transporting onions from Nashik to other states, also played a key role. The government purchased onions at high rates from farmers and sold them at lower prices to consumers, ensuring a win-win for all. This initiative significantly boosted the morale and trust of onion farmers, further consolidating their support for the Mahayuti. The 2024 assembly elections highlight how swiftly political fortunes can change when pressing grievances are addressed effectively. For Maharashtra’s onion farmers, the promise of better prices and decisive policy interventions proved instrumental in transforming discontent into unwavering support for the Mahayuti alliance.

A 13-year-old boy inexplicably survived electrocution by a live wire — twice! — while surfing atop a train in Brazil, disturbing footage shows. The shocking video shot from Rio de Janeiro’s Anchieta Station Monday shows the teenager’s limp body lying on top of a train just moments after being electrocuted, with his legs dangling over the side as other travelers panic on the platform below. A brave young man is seen scaling the train car to rescue the boy, barely dodging the live wire himself as passengers scream about the danger from below. The good Samaritan then grabs the teen’s arm to pull him up, and the teen is exposed to the live wire once again, causing a fiery explosion and a second severe shock, forcing the young man to abort the attempted rescue. The unnamed victim was eventually freed and rushed to Albert Schweitzer Municipal Hospital in Realengo, where he was reported to be in serious condition Tuesday morning. Supervia, the Brazilian train company that operated the locomotive, warned against train “surfing” — a dangerous social media trend that has killed six people in New York City this year . “These actions, in addition to being irresponsible, compromise the safety of all passengers and impact the proper functioning of the railway operation,” the rail company said in a statement. “It is essential that everyone, passengers and pedestrians, collaborate, respecting safety rules, and that society as a whole mobilizes to avoid tragedies and eradicate this dangerous practice,” Supervia added. The company also warned against passengers “touching or attempting to remove equipment” due to the high voltage of electricity. In New York City, MTA officials pleaded with parents this week to “take control” of their kids to deter them from participating in the deadly social media trend. Most “subway surfers” are teenagers filming themselves performing the stunt for internet clout. The MTA attempted to curb the activity last year with its “Ride Inside, Stay Alive” public service announcement initiative featuring Big Apple students urging their peers not to attempt deadly subway surfing. The transit agency has also pushed social media platforms to remove subway surfing videos, which often go viral and inspire more teens to hop on top of train cars.

NEW YORK, Dec. 03, 2024 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Results from the 2024 Travelers Risk Index highlight a concerning increase in distracted driving, with many risky behaviors surpassing pre-pandemic levels. Recently, Jessica Kearney and Ginny Brzezinski from the Travelers Institute, along with Ryan McMahon from Cambridge Mobile Telematics, partnered with D S Simon Media on a nationwide satellite media tour to discuss the dangers of distracted driving, tips to navigate the holidays, and the growing use of telematics to offer solutions. Millions of Americans will be hitting the road this holiday season, and with that comes a rise in distracted driving. While traffic fatalities decreased by 4% last year to 44,450, distracted driving remains a growing issue. According to the 2024 Travelers Risk Index, 78% of consumers believe distracted driving is worse now than a few years ago, with many drivers admitting to risky behaviors: close to 60% are reading texts or emails while driving; 26% are updating or checking social media; and 24% are taking photos or videos. Young drivers, particularly Gen Z, are especially at risk. Compared to overall averages, drivers ages 16-20 engage in some hazardous driving behaviors more frequently, like texting/emailing, scrolling and GPS navigation. Additionally, 41% of parents surveyed said they don’t feel like distracted driving is emphasized enough in drivers ed, so they are taking matters into their own hands. Here are some important tips to help prevent distracted driving: Activate the “Do Not Disturb” feature on your phone to block notifications while driving. Before starting your trip, program your GPS and review the route to avoid distractions while on the road. Consider signing up for a telematics program to promote safe driving habits beyond the holiday season. Finally, don't hesitate to speak up if you see a friend or loved one driving distracted—encourage them to focus on the road. If you're on the phone with someone who's driving, ask them to call you back once they've safely reached their destination. Telematics technology is playing a key role in promoting safer driving by collecting data from connected vehicles, IoT devices, and smartphones. It tracks behaviors such as speeding, hard braking, and distraction, and provides users with feedback to help improve their driving habits. By monitoring performance and encouraging safer choices, telematics helps drivers adopt better habits beyond the holiday season. The far-right rabble-rouser laid out part of her plan to slash government spending while where she told host Maria Bartiromo how she believes “every single government department” is ripe with waste. Promising to take a “deep dive” into government excess, Greene put NPR at the top of her list of what she thinks should be on the chopping block, saying, “We’ll be looking at everything from government-funded media programs like NPR that spread nothing but Democrat propaganda.” Greene’s Republican colleagues first floated the idea of stripping NPR of federal funding after Uri Berliner, a former editor, accusing the public broadcasting organization of having an “absence of viewpoint diversity” and a strong liberal bias. During a hearing led by the House Energy and Commerce Committee’s oversight subcommittee in May, Rep. While a is currently in congressional limbo, an incoming Republican majority in both the House and Senate may put the threat to defund the organization back in play. The unofficial federal agency is set to be spearheaded by Donald Trump acolytes Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy. Upon her appointment, Greene vowed to eliminate what she sees as a glut of government jobs. “Our subcommittee’s work will expose people who need to be FIRED,” . “The bureaucrats who don’t do their job, fail audits like in the Pentagon, and don’t know where BILLIONS of dollars are going, will be getting a pink slip.” Related...

Boxing Day shopper footfall was down 7.9% from last year across all UK retail destinations up until 5pm, MRI Software’s OnLocation Footfall Index found. However, this year’s data had been compared with an unusual spike in footfall as 2023 was the first “proper Christmas” period without Covid-19 pandemic restrictions, an analyst at the retail technology company said. It found £4.6 billion will be spent overall on the festive sales. Before the pandemic the number of Boxing Day shoppers on the streets had been declining year on year. The last uplift recorded by MRI was in 2015. Jenni Matthews, marketing and insights director at MRI Software, told the PA news agency: “We’ve got to bear in mind that (last year) was our first proper Christmas without any (Covid-19) restrictions or limitations. “Figures have come out that things have stabilised, we’re almost back to what we saw pre-pandemic.” There were year-on-year declines in footfall anywhere between 5% and 12% before Covid-19 restrictions, she said. MRI found 12% fewer people were out shopping on Boxing Day in 2019 than in 2018, and there were 3% fewer in 2018 than in 2017, Ms Matthews added. She said: “It’s the shift to online shopping, it’s the convenience, you’ve got the family days that take place on Christmas Day and Boxing Day.” People are also increasingly stocking-up before Christmas, Ms Matthews said, and MRI found an 18% increase in footfall at all UK retail destinations on Christmas Eve this year compared with 2023. Ms Matthews said: “We see the shops are full of people all the way up to Christmas Eve, so they’ve probably got a couple of good days of food, goodies, everything that they need, and they don’t really need to go out again until later on in that week. “We did see that big boost on Christmas Eve. It looks like shoppers may have concentrated much of their spending in that pre-Christmas rush.” Many online sales kicked off between December 23 and the night of Christmas Day and “a lot of people would have grabbed those bargains from the comfort of their own home”, she said. She added: “I feel like it’s becoming more and more common that people are grabbing the bargains pre-Christmas.” Footfall is expected to rise on December 27 as people emerge from family visits and shops re-open, including Next, Marks and Spencer and John Lewis that all shut for Boxing Day. It will also be payday for some as it is the last Friday of the month. A study by Barclays Consumer Spend had forecast that shoppers would spend £236 each on average in the Boxing Day sales this year, but that the majority of purchases would be made online. Nearly half of respondents said the cost-of-living crisis will affect their post-Christmas shopping but the forecast average spend is still £50 more per person than it was before the pandemic, with some of that figure because of inflation, Barclays said. Amid the financial pressures, many people are planning to buy practical, perishable and essential items such as food and kitchenware. A total of 65% of shoppers are expecting to spend the majority of their sales budget online. Last year, Barclays found 63.9% of Boxing Day retail purchases were made online. However, a quarter of respondents aim to spend mostly in store – an 11% rise compared with last year. Karen Johnson, head of retail at Barclays, said: “Despite the ongoing cost-of-living pressures, it is encouraging to hear that consumers will be actively participating in the post-Christmas sales. “This year, we’re likely to see a shift towards practicality and sustainability, with more shoppers looking to bag bargains on kitchen appliances and second-hand goods.” Consumers choose in-store shopping largely because they enjoy the social aspect and touching items before they buy, Barclays said, adding that high streets and shopping centres are the most popular destinations.None

The CFP national championship will be Monday, Jan. 20, 2025, at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. For additional information on the College Football Playoff, visit CollegeFootballPlayoff.com .NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — The Tennessee Titans have the slimmest of playoff hopes and must win out to have any chance of keeping them alive. Figuring out who they are would be a first step in the right direction. The Titans (3-9) also must bounce back from last week's ugly loss at Washington that cost this franchise yet another chance to string together consecutive wins for the first time in more than two years. “We know that this is a big opportunity for us to develop as a team and to create and to continue developing our identity,” quarterback Will Levis said. “And so we’re going to make sure that we do our best throughout these next few weeks to do that.” The Jacksonville Jaguars (2-10) lost Trevor Lawrence for the rest of the season after the hit he took from Texans linebacker Azeez Al-Shaair in last week's 23-20 loss to Houston. Their already dim playoff hopes were extinguished Monday night when Denver won. That leaves the Jaguars playing for pride and potentially drafting No. 1 overall for the third time in five years. “It’s all about how you finish,” tight end Evan Engram said. “How we finish probably won’t erase the feeling we have of the season. But as the pride of this franchise, the pride of the team, it’s definitely worth going to finish strong and going to get some wins and fighting for that.” The Titans went into Washington with one of the NFL's stingiest defenses and wound up shredded, giving up a season-worst 267 yards rushing. Defensive coordinator Dennard Wilson said, “We can’t allow what happened last week to happen again.” Wide receiver Calvin Ridley says he's excited to see some old teammates Sunday and downplayed a question about how close Jacksonville's offer to keep him last March might've been when he chose to sign with division rival Tennessee instead. “Doesn't matter right now,” Ridley said. “I'm excited for this week. Jags come in here, play with my boys. I'm excited.” Ridley played one season with Jacksonville after the Jaguars traded for him . He had 76 catches for 1,016 yards and eight TDs last season with the Jaguars. So far this season, Ridley has 43 receptions for 679 yards and three TDs. “I just know I'm going to be ready,” Ridley said. Jacksonville has lost 16 consecutive games when tied or trailing at halftime. It’s a complete flip from the 2022 season, in which the Jaguars rallied to beat Dallas, the Las Vegas Raiders and Tennessee down the stretch to make the playoffs. The 20-16 victory against the Titans in the regular-season finale that year is the last time coach Doug Pederson’s team has come from behind to win after trailing or being tied at the break. Tennessee led 13-7 at the half in that one and was minutes from winning a third straight AFC South title . Jaguars defensive end Josh Hines-Allen needs 4 1/2 sacks to break the franchise record of 55 held by Tony Brackens. Hines-Allen has at least half a sack in four consecutive games against Tennessee, which has given up 43 sacks in 2024. “My family knows about it probably more than me,” Hines-Allen said. “My wife tells me all the time, ‘Hey, get that record. All you just need is four sacks.’ Like, you can just (get) four sacks. “I had a couple games last year where I had three, so I can’t say it’s out of the realm. But I never had four sacks; don’t know what it feels like to do that in one game. But hopefully speak it into existence.” Mac Jones will be starting at quarterback and is 0-2 with the Jaguars this season. He has one more interception (three) than touchdown passes (two) in five appearances. The Titans are looking to see if Levis can keep building on his strong play of the past month and start turning those into wins. Levis is 1-3 since returning from a strained throwing shoulder. He has seven TD passes with two interceptions for a 101.3 passer rating in his past four games. He also is completing 61.7% of his passes for 960 yards. “The cool thing right now for Will is that as we’ve corrected things, he’s corrected them,” Titans coach Brian Callahan said . “And that’s been really fun to watch as he’s made adjustments from game to game, sometimes even from in the game made an adjustment to a coverage or a read, and that part’s been good to see.” AP Pro Football Writer Mark Long in Jacksonville, Florida, contributed to this report. Connor Franta has accused his business partners of siphoning over $1 million from Heard Well, allegations they have firmly denied. In a lawsuit filed this week in California Superior Court, YouTuber Connor Franta is suing his cofounders at Heard Well, a music label working with influencers, as well as the company’s business manager. The manager, who’s the father of one of the cofounders, is accused of ignoring the alleged theft. The suit claims that Heard Well cofounder Jeremy Wineberg used the company’s American Express Black Card for personal expenses, including travel, concert tickets, tattoos, groceries, and plastic surgery. Franta alleges that he “systematically looted” the company and used its funds to pay off the Amex balances. The business partners and manager denied the allegations in statements to Business Insider . Another cofounder, Andrew Graham, Franta’s former CAA agent, is also accused of converting thousands of Heard Well dollars for personal use. Additionally, the lawsuit claims the mismanagement and alleged theft left Heard Well financially drained, prompting Franta to take legal action. CAA is a top Hollywood talent agency that represents influencers on platforms like YouTube , Instagram and TikTok , helping them monetize through brand deals and business ventures. The agency is not involved in the lawsuit. The suit claims that Jeremy and, to a lesser extent, Graham used the company’s earnings as a “personal piggy bank.” Franta accuses Lindsay Wineberg & Associates, managed by Jeremy’s father, of negligence by allowing over $1 million to be funneled into Wineberg and Graham’s personal pockets. A post shared by Heard Well (@heardwell) Jeremy’s lawyer, Bryan Sullivan, denied the allegations, stating that his clients did not engage in misconduct. Graham’s lawyer, John Shenk, also denied the claims and stated that Graham will defend himself in court. Graham confirmed that he no longer represents Franta, and CAA is no longer involved. Related: Franta, a YouTuber with 4.8 million subscribers and author of ‘A Work in Progress,’ co-founded Heard Well in 2015 with an initial investment of $2,000 each, as per the operating agreement filed in the lawsuit. Heard Well released dozens of albums, but according to the lawsuit, Franta “hardly saw a dime of profit” throughout its nearly 10-year existence. The lawsuit states that earlier this spring, Franta discovered it’d fallen behind on royalty payments after a YouTube video accused the company of scamming. Franta also claimed in the suit that he’s been blocked from the company’s social media accounts. In a statement to BI, he said, “Acting with integrity and respect in all my professional endeavors – especially with fellow creators – has always been a top priority for me.” He added that although the issue had only recently come to light, he took immediate action this week “to protect the company and to facilitate its pursuit of all necessary and appropriate legal remedies.”

The Nasdaq Composite slid 1.49% to 19,722.03, as Tesla dropped about 5% and Nvidia fell 2%. —CNBC's Yun Li and Pia Singh contributed to this report.

MUNICH (AP) — Harry Kane is the quickest player to score 50 goals in the Bundesliga after scoring a hat trick on his 43rd appearance on Friday. Kane’s three goals – including two penalties – gave Bayern a 3-0 win over Augsburg , stretching the Bavarian powerhouse’s lead to eight points ahead of the rest of the 11th round. Kane scored 36 goals in 32 league appearances last season, his first for Bayern after joining from Tottenham. It was also the first season since 2012 that Bayern failed to win the title, as Bayer Leverkusen went undefeated to snap Bayern's winning run. As well as 14 league goals this season, Kane has scored five in the Champions League and one in the German Cup. Against Augsburg, he had to be patient as Augsburg goalkeeper Nediljko Labrović and his defenders stood firm. “It was somehow typical Harry Kane,” Bayern coach Vincent Kompany said. “It was close in the first half, close, close, close, and then it happens, I think three goals in 15 minutes. Of course, he can do that. But for such a player, I have to say, he had a lot of chances that he could maybe make more of. Then, in an instant, everything is perfect and he can score many goals.” AP soccer: https://apnews.com/hub/soccer

WASHINGTON (AP) — The acting director of the Secret Service said Thursday that the agency is “reorganizing and reimagining” its culture and how it operates following an assassination attempt against Donald Trump on the campaign trail. Members of a bipartisan House task force investigating the attempt on Trump's life pushed Ronald Rowe on how the agency’s staffers could have missed such blatant security vulnerabilities leading up to the July 13 shooting at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. At one point, the hearing devolved into a shouting match between Rowe and a Republican congressman. Rowe promised accountability for what he called the agency’s “abject failure” to secure the rally in Butler, where a gunman opened fire from a nearby building. Trump was wounded in the ear, one rallygoer was killed and two others were wounded. Another assassination attempt two months later contributed to the agency’s troubles. That gunman waited for hours for Trump to appear at his golf course in Florida, but a Secret Service agent thwarted the attack by spotting the firearm poking through bushes. The task force has been investigating both attempts, but it was the July shooting that dominated Thursday’s hearing. Its inquiry is one of a series of investigations and reports that have faulted the agency for planning and communications failures. The agency’s previous director resigned, and the Secret Service increased protections for Trump before the Republican won the November election. Rowe was repeatedly asked by flabbergasted lawmakers how problems so obvious in hindsight were allowed to happen. Rep. Jason Crow, a Colorado Democrat, said it was “just wild to me” that at a time of tech advances, the Secret Service was using text messages and emails to communicate in real time about threats. He also asked Rowe why so many things went wrong that day “yet nobody said anything.” Rowe said the agency used to have a culture where people felt comfortable speaking up. “I don’t know where we lost that,” he said. “We have to get back to that.” Rowe said the agency is putting a much stronger emphasis on training — something previous investigations found was lacking — and on doing more regular reviews of events to see what went right and where improvements can be made. “We are reorganizing and reimaging this organization," Rowe told lawmakers. He said the agency needs to identify possible leaders much earlier in their careers instead of just promoting people to command positions because they have been around a long time. The hearing was largely cordial, with members of Congress stressing the bipartisan nature of their work and praising Rowe for cooperating with their investigation even as they pushed him for explanations. But at one point, Rowe and Rep. Pat Fallon, a Texas Republican, faced off — shouting over each other as other members pleaded for order. Fallon pulled out a photo of President Joe Biden, Trump and others at this year's Sept. 11 ceremony in New York and asked Rowe why he was at the event, suggesting it was to burnish his prospects at getting the director job permanently. Trump has not yet named his pick to lead the agency. “I was there to show respect for a Secret Service member that died on 9/11. Do not invoke 9/11 for political purposes!” Rowe shouted. “You wanted to be visible because you were auditioning for this job that you’re not going to get!” Fallon later shot back. Rowe roared back: "You are out of line, Congressman. You are out of line!” “You're a bully,” Fallon said. This was the task force’s second public hearing and the first time that Rowe has addressed its members in public. The panel has until Dec. 13 to release its final report. Rep. Mark Green, a Tennessee Republican, said the agency’s conduct during the July shooting seemed almost “lackadaisical.” He said some of the issues that went wrong that day were ”really basic things.” “It speaks of an apathy or a complacency that is really unacceptable in an organization like the Secret Service,” Green said. The task force conducted 46 transcribed interviews, attended over a dozen briefings and reviewed over 20,000 documents. Members also visited the site of both assassination attempts and went to the FBI’s laboratory in Quantico, Virginia, to look at evidence. Rowe said Thursday that the agency's internal investigation , whose findings were released last month, identified failures by multiple employees. He noted that the quality of the advance work — the people who scope out event locations ahead of time — did not meet agency standards. He vowed accountability for those who fell down on the job. Many of the investigations have centered on why buildings near the rally with a clear line of sight to the stage where Trump was speaking were not secured in advance. The gunman, Thomas Crooks, climbed onto the roof of one of them and opened fire before being killed by a Secret Service counter-sniper. Rowe pointed to the failure to protect the building as the most glaring oversight that day. He also was asked about the morale of agents and new hires. Rowe said applications are actually up this year — the agency made a net gain of about 200 agents during the past fiscal year, meaning both new agents were hired and veteran agents retained.Democratic lawmakers threaten to derail UAE arms sales over support for RSF in Sudan: Report

NEW YORK — There has been much chatter about the Jets and their lack of discipline, even dating back to last season. In Sunday’s loss to Seattle, Gang Green committed 12 penalties for 83 yards. So, how does Jets interim coach Jeff Ulbrich define a disciplined player? “A disciplined player is a player that executes his job to the best of his abilities every single play, and you see that,” the coach said. “That doesn’t necessarily mean they win or lose the down, it means they are executing and doing exactly what you asked. Part of that process is the penalty or lack thereof. “Some penalties, as we spoke about at length before, are aggressive penalties, and you live with them. Solly’s [Solomon Thomas] penalty with the horse collar, he’s in the pits scrapping for a third-and-1, fourth-and-1, you are just trying to grab at whatever you can grab at. The beauty of that play is when he realized it, he let it go and ultimately, that wasn’t what tackled the guy. If you get called for stuff like that, we can live with those. “The ones that you can’t live with are the illegal shifts, the illegal formations, the delay of games, offsides, those are absolutely unacceptable, and those are the illustration of lack of discipline at times, so got to be better in that way.” Penalties, or self-inflicted wounds, as the coaching staff has repeatedly called them, have been a consistent issue for the Jets. They led the NFL in penalties last year (124) and are also among the leading offenders this season. Gang Green is fourth in the league in penalties, with 89 through 12 games. During the fourth quarter against the Seahawks, the Jets committed five penalties on a single drive. Among the penalties were too many men on the field, pass interference, and a horse collar penalty that helped Seahawks running back Zach Charbonnet score the eventual game-winning touchdown. After the game, Jets cornerback D.J. Reed blasted officials on social media. “@NFLOfficiating you f—— suck, yall should be ashamed of yall selves!” Reed said on X before later deleting the post. Ulbrich said he holds Jets players accountable during team meetings to try and prevent penalties from being committed. Like many other teams, the Jets have a fine system for players who are late or get a warning, which could lead to fines for committing preventable penalties. Players receive a warning and after that they could be fined for every infraction that they receive. Team fines can also be less than what the NFL decides to fine players for hits or penalties. “It’s a bunch of different ways that you can do it,” Jets left guard John Simpson said to the New York Daily News. “I felt like I never really had a problem with it. I think it is about making those things a priority at showing those things at the beginning of the week, and that’s something that we do now. “We show certain things that go on in the league and allow people to understand and know this is what will happen when you do something like that. Not everybody knows what a penalty is. When they show us, that information helps guys for sure.” This week, the word “undisciplined” also came up after Texans linebacker Azeez Al-Shaair was suspended three games for his illegal hit on Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence during Sunday’s game. During the first half of Sunday’s game, Lawrence slid following a scramble when Al-Shaair hit the quarterback in the head with a forearm blow. Lawrence quickly went into the fencing position after suffering a concussion, and he was later carted off the field. Al-Shaair was ejected from the game, but not before he engaged in a brawl with various Jaguars players. Al-Shaair apologized on social media Monday to Lawrence, saying first that he didn’t see the quarterback sliding until “it was too late,” and it happened “in the blink of an eye.” On Wednesday, the Jaguars placed Lawrence on injured reserve, which means Lawrence is out at least four games. With five games remaining and a 2-10 record, Lawrence’s season is likely over. “Every time I see a quarterback run, my thoughts are to go hit him,” Jets linebacker C.J. Mosley told the Daily News. “I was taught as a young backer, you always dive for the head because when they do slide, you are going to aim high. If they slide, you should go over and if they don’t dive then, it’s a body shot and for me it is that simple. “Some quarterbacks slide late, some try to draw a penalty. On that one, it was a bang, bang play. You can look at it both ways, but at the end of the day, you are taught to dive high and if they slide late, you try to aim over their head. “That’s the only coaching point I would receive. Some hits can be avoidable, but on that one, it was tough. Obviously, on the offensive side, you are going to take offense to it and on the defensive side, you are going to be defensive about making a legal tackle.” ©2024 New York Daily News. This Timberwolves roster is different than the one from a year ago. That much is obvious in games, as Karl-Anthony Towns’ consistent scoring and general size is missed, as is the playmaking and ball security of guys like Kyle Anderson and Jordan McLaughlin. ADVERTISEMENT But their absences have been felt in the locker room, as well. Towns was a consistent source of positivity for the team. Anderson was one of the loudest vocal leaders. The latter can be especially difficult to replace, especially because it can be uncomfortable to speak up when things are going poorly and something needs to change. That was the position Anthony Edwards has found himself in early this season. Edwards has been praised for his leadership through his first four years on Minnesota’s roster. Mostly, that all came via positivity and example. Edwards can be coached hard, which gave the greenlight for the coaches to treat everyone else the same way. Edwards was also quick to credit his teammates around him for their contributions to the cause, and was eager and willing to spend time with and talk to anyone on the roster, players No. 1-15. He’ll also stand up for any of his teammates if the occasion ever arises. That’s why he has been so beloved in the locker room and why he was viewed as such a leader, even at his young age. ADVERTISEMENT But with Anderson’s departure, Edwards was now tasked with leading even through choppy waters. And the waves have been rather large through the first quarter of the season. Minnesota’s defense has fallen off a cliff in comparison to where it was a year ago. After never even as many as three consecutive games during the 2023-24 regular season, the Wolves endured a four-game losing skid earlier this week. At that point, words were exchanged, both publicly and privately. A halftime hash out during Minnesota’s loss Wednesday to Sacramento got the conversation rolling. Mike Conley got the dialogue started, but all indications are that Edwards was a healthy participant. Edwards noted it’s difficult to know what to say in those times. “Because you look at everybody, and everybody got a different agenda. It’s like, ‘What the (heck) am I supposed to say?’ You know what I mean?” Edwards said. “I’m trying to get better in that aspect, figure out what the hell to say to get everybody on the same agenda, because everybody right now is on different agendas. I think that’s one of the main culprits of why we’re losing, because everybody out there got their own agenda. I guess their imagination of what’s supposed to be going on, and what’s really happening.” Nickeil Alexander-Walker told reporters at Friday’s shootaround that this is the most vocal Edwards has ever been. And while the intention of everyone’s messages are pure, “sometimes it’s not always worded the right way.” ADVERTISEMENT “I think we’ve crossed that line of, ‘Man, I feel like you’re not hearing the message.’ It’s tough to be called out, because you start to feel like, ‘OK, are you saying I’m the reason?’ No one wants to be at fault,” Alexander-Walker said. “But at the end of the day, I definitely think that guys are open to hearing it better. And I think it just came from a stand point of, at a point and time in the conversation, there was a comeback. It was going back and forth now, as opposed to receiving it (and saying), ‘OK, I got you.’ That’s how it’s going to be. It’s very rare that someone is just going to be able to be called out and not have anything to say. “It’s human nature to be defensive, at the end of the day. But kind of remembering what we’re here for, and if I’m being called out, chances are I’ve got to look in the mirror and be better.” It’s a delicate dance. There has to be an environment rooted in accountability, but you also have to be sure not to lose teammates, as Jimmy Butler was criticized for doing during his short stint in Minnesota a few years ago. ADVERTISEMENT And while it’s never ideal for a team to be living through a stretch of basketball the quality of which falls significantly short of the expectation, these stretches will likely lead to growth for Edwards, if not on the court, then in the locker room. You can’t steer a ship to a title if you don’t know how to navigate turbulent tides. Day by day, loss by loss, Edwards is learning how to spin the wheel. ______________________________________________________ This story was written by one of our partner news agencies. In decidedly unMay-like conditions Celtic posted a result that felt as if we had arrived at the business end of the season already. Their fans certainly believe so. “We shall not be moved!” they sang at the end though that might have been a reference to the frostbite that had surely long set in. The weather was getting worse when Reo Hatate distinguished himself with some skill that was not in keeping with the rest of the game's output to secure all three points for Celtic. Visitors' defender Cameron Carter-Vickers deserves credit too for a late block to deny substitute Ester Sokler. Leighton Clarkson will also wonder ‘what if?’ after he screwed the ball wide following a late break. A point-a-piece might have been fair on a night when medals should have been awarded to all participants who braved the elements, including – indeed, chiefly – the supporters. The visitors left the happier, as they celebrated their side taking a seven-point lead in the championship race. Brendan Rodgers’ team also have a game in hand. As for the neutral, we felt somewhat cheated. What a shame this top of the league clash wasn’t being played in May, or at any time when there was not incessant, driving rain and what felt like a force ten gale blowing in off the North Sea. No sensible review of the game can neglect to factor in the conditions and lament the impact they had on the entertainment value. The fact both these teams toiled in front of goal having scored in every league match to date said it all. Aberdeen goalkeeper Ross Doohan was a large part of the reason why Celtic were kept at bay for so long. The ‘keeper, who started his career at Celtic, answered any pre-match doubts with a superb performance despite picking up a concerning looking knock early on following a clash with Kyogo Furuhashi. He touched a shot from Hatate past the post with 20 minutes left and then exceeded that with a thrilling dive to keep a header from Adam Idah out. Despite the weather, the decibel-level was ratcheted right up for this meeting of first v second. Fireworks – officially ratified ones, from the pitch rather than fired indiscriminately from stands – exploded into the air and made a mockery of attempts to play this down as just another game, just another three points. Something was always going to give – Celtic have a perfect record away from home domestically while Aberdeen have won very every match at Pittodrie under Jimmy Thelin. And give it did. Celtic look unstoppable. Taking maximum points from such a tricky fixture in such exacting circumstances looks very ominous indeed for their rivals, if Aberdeen - and Rangers - can still be termed as such. While the game had been eagerly anticipated, there’s little players, whether in-form or otherwise, can do when faced with such wild conditions. It was an effort to keep the ball in play sometimes. Kyogo caught Doohan early on, after a through ball that had been carried on the wind. Suddenly all eyes were on the Aberdeen bench, where Tom Ritchie, recently of Bonnyrigg Rose was sitting. He has been recalled from his loan spell following Dimitar Mitov’s injury and was now sitting strapping on his gloves. Happily for Doohan, who is seeking to make the most of Mitov’s absence, he was able to continue. Kyogo, to be fair, stayed with him throughout as he was being treated and looked genuinely concerned. The stoppage so soon after kick-off did not do the players’ muscles much good but they soon picked up the pace again, with the hosts threatening first. Duk looked to be in the mood and latched on to a long ball over Alex Valle from Sivert Heltne Nilsen before testing Kasper Schmeichel, who saved with his legs. Kevin Nisbet’s effort from the rebound was well wide. It was a scrappy opening 45 minutes, though this was hardly unexpected. With Celtic forcing Aberdeen back the longer the half wore on. A series of corners just before the interval saw a header from Alistair Johnston cleared off the line by Jamie McGrath. On another occasion, Paulo Bernardo’s delivery from the corner flag flew straight in but the goal was quickly ruled out for a push on Doohan. The Portuguese midfielder looked the player most likely to make the breakthrough. Aberdeen had to watch him carefully but that left space for Nicolas Kuhn, who saw a shot curl just over ten minutes into the second half. Celtic upped the ante and got their reward when substitute Greg Taylor picked out a run from Hatate, who was being played onside by Nicky Devlin. The midfielder brought the ball down with his chest before steering into the far corner. Such poise seemed fitting for a title-winning goal, which is what many are now interpreting it as.

GLOBALISATION AND IDENTITY: Australian scholar advocates unified, inclusive path forward Islamabad : In a globalised world, where societies are increasingly multicultural, adopting a relational and decolonised approach to identity can bridge divides, foster inclusivity, and reshape cultural connections, emphasised Australian critical race scholar Prof Debbie Bargallie. "This perspective not only promotes a more equitable and interconnected future, but also resists the exploitation of values, focusing instead on the shared humanity that unites us all," Prof Bargallie told a seminar on “Reshaping Cultural Connections in a Globalised World” at the Institute of Policy Studies here. The event, chaired by member of the Supreme Court's Shariat Appellate Bench Dr Khalid Masud and attended by IPS chairman Khalid Rahman, served as a precursor to an international seminar to be organised by the IPS on Dec 5 on "The Role of Religions in Fostering Peace, Harmony and Justice.” Prof Bargallie, an associate professor and principal research fellow at the Griffith Centre for Social and Cultural Research and the Griffith Institute for Educational Research, Griffith University, Australia, said highlighted the interconnectedness of cultural histories and identities, emphasising how relationality and positionality shape knowledge and social research. Drawing from cultural theorist Stuart Hall’s concept that all narratives are “in context” and positioned, she called for revisiting sidelined histories to foster a more inclusive understanding of cultural connections and identities. Prof Bargallie shared insight from her research and personal experiences, exploring the historical links between Australia, Islam, and cultural relations. She noted that trade and cultural exchanges between Muslims and Aboriginal Australians were established long before European colonisation, as evidenced by ancient maps by Al-Khwarizmi drawn in 820AD and Kilwa Sultanate coins found in Australia, which reveal a period of mutual engagement that predates European settlement. The scholar also said 19th-century Muslim immigrants, including Afghans, Indians, Algerians, and Malays, shaped Australia’s industries as cameleers, farmers, and hawkers, whose contributions underscored the early foundations of Australia’s multicultural fabric. She, however, she noted the challenges faced by these communities under the racially exclusionary White Australia policy, which marginalised non-European migrants. Sharing a personal connection, Prof Bargallie recounted how her great-grandfather, a Muslim from Punjab who migrated in the 1890s, was unable to leave Australia due to discriminatory policies like the English dictation test. "Despite such challenges, the resilience and growth of Australia’s Muslim community have significantly enriched the nation’s multicultural identity. Pakistani migrants, now the 17th largest migrant group in Australia, exemplify this vibrancy. Moreover, Islam, as the fastest-growing religion in the country, now accounts for 3.2 per cent of the population, highlighting the increasing acceptance of cultural diversity," she said. The scholar called for a decolonised approach to cultural studies that values indigenous epistemologies, marginalised voices, and non-Eurocentric frameworks, and narratives that emphasise shared histories, fluid identities, and relationality to address systemic challenges like displacement, marginalisation, and loss of cultural heritage. She added that national frameworks rooted in inclusivity could serve as powerful tools for promoting harmony and coexistence under a shared identity. Dr Khalid Masud noted that unlike political identity, which imposed boundaries, cultural identity offered a more inclusive and expansive sense of belonging. He said in the digital era, where identities were increasingly shaped and politicised, there was a need to resist the exploitation of values and instead focus on the shared humanity that connected all the people.

Months after the UK’s National Crime Agency (NCA) launched a major offensive against the notorious ransomware group LockBit, the cybercriminal gang appears to have resurfaced , continuing to carry out attacks. Despite law enforcement efforts, ransomware groups like LockBit remain resilient, demonstrating the evolving challenge in the fight against cybercrime. In February 2024, the NCA, in coordination with nine other countries, launched Operation Cronos , a decisive strike on LockBit , a group that emerged around 2019. This cybercrime group had gained infamy for its use of ransomware – a type of malicious software that locks victims’ data and demands a ransom for its release. It operates on a Ransomware-as-a-Service (RaaS) model, where it provides ransomware tools and infrastructure to affiliates who then carry out the attacks. LockBit was also known for a tactic called “double extortion,” threatening not only to keep data locked but also leak sensitive information if the ransom wasn’t paid. Operating through the dark web, the group was built on anonymity and encryption, making it difficult for authorities to track. An estimated $8 billion in financial damage Since its emergence, LockBit has become one of the most active ransomware groups , targeting industries like finance, healthcare and critical infrastructure. With an estimated 20-25% share of the ransomware market, LockBit’s attacks have caused billions of dollars in global damages. The group’s financial impact, exceeding $8 billion by some accounts, has drawn comparisons to other notorious ransomware actors like REvil and DarkSide. But Operation Cronos changed that. The NCA’s operation infiltrated and disrupted Lockbit’s criminal infrastructure, seizing control of their computing systems and even repurposing their dark web leak site – a publicly accessible website where cybercriminal groups publish stolen data. Operation Cronos marked a bold new approach to combating cybercrime, proving to criminals that law enforcement agencies were ready to go on the offensive. From Cronos to Endgame In May 2024, global law enforcement agencies launched Operation Endgame, a coordinated strike aimed at dismantling the infrastructure used by multiple cybercrime groups. While similar in its objectives to Operation Cronos, which focused on LockBit, Endgame had a broader scope: it targeted the malware infrastructures used by various ransomware and data-stealing groups, including those that likely collaborated with LockBit. Malware, a type of software designed to infiltrate digital devices, is often used by cybercriminals to steal information or take control of systems. One particularly dangerous form of malware creates networks of infected computers, known as botnets, which can be remotely controlled without the owners’ knowledge. These botnets are used for a range of criminal activities, from sending spam and stealing data to launching distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks – overwhelming a system with fake requests so that it can’t process legitimate ones. Operation Endgame specifically dismantled the infrastructure of “droppers” and “loaders” – programs used to stealthily install malware onto victims’ systems. The operation marked another significant step in the global fight against cybercrime, highlighting the importance of international collaboration in taking down not only individual criminals but the tools and networks that enable them. Endgame’s successes were notable: it disrupted over 100 infected servers and seized more than 2,000 domain names used to host malicious software, dealing a major blow to botnet networks that had caused hundreds of millions of dollars in damages worldwide . The back-to-back operations, Cronos and Endgame, marked a pivotal shift in global cybersecurity tactics, directly targeting the rise of cybercrime-as-a-service (CaaS). CaaS enables anyone, regardless of technical skill, to buy or lease tools and services to carry out cyberattacks. This model has lowered the barrier to entry for cybercrime, making it easier for individuals or groups to launch sophisticated attacks. LockBit is a prime example: the group provides the infrastructure while affiliates execute the attacks, with affiliates getting the majority of the ransom and LockBit claiming a cut for providing the tools. Cronos and Endgame underscored the increasing collaboration between law enforcement agencies across the globe, signalling a united front against the growing cybercrime threat. Ransomware’s persistent threat Despite these victories, LockBit’s return underscores a key challenge – cybercriminals are constantly adapting. The group’s re-emergence raises concerns about whether organisations are adequately prepared for future attacks. Many still lack essential cybersecurity measures, leaving them vulnerable to increasingly sophisticated ransomware groups. As LockBit reasserts its influence, new ransomware groups are also gaining prominence. Analysts have identified at least 10 emerging ransomware actors in 2024, including Play Ransomware, RansomHub and Akira, all of which have adopted tactics similar to LockBit’s. Play Ransomware has been a persistent and growing threat, known for its large-scale attacks on municipalities and critical infrastructure. In 2024, it continued to execute high-profile breaches, including an attack on Swiss government vendors. RansomHub has rapidly gained prominence in 2024, with its highly attractive affiliate program offering up to a 90% commission for attackers. RansomHub has targeted over 100 organisations globally, particularly focusing on business services and smaller companies that may be more vulnerable. Akira has gained notoriety for its successful double-extortion attacks, focusing on industries like healthcare, education and technology. These groups, along with others like Medusa and IncRansom, are part of a dynamic ransomware ecosystem where new groups emerge while established ones like LockBit struggle to maintain dominance. Despite a brief drop in ransomware incidents from mid-2023 to 2024, there was a 20% uptick between the first and second quarters of 2024 . More global coordination needed Operations Cronos and Endgame mark a turning point in the fight against cybercrime, shifting law enforcement’s focus from targeting individual hackers to dismantling the infrastructure that powers these attacks. These efforts showed a new approach, going after the servers, networks, and tools that ransomware and malware groups rely on rather than just chasing high-profile criminals. The operations also underscored unprecedented levels of international cooperation, with agencies like Europol, the FBI and Interpol working together for global takedowns across multiple jurisdictions – a feat previously hampered by legal and political challenges. This cross-border teamwork enabled simultaneous strikes on cybercrime networks, hitting them where it hurts the most: their operational backbone. The operations also highlighted how far law enforcement has come in understanding the technical vulnerabilities of cybercrime infrastructure. Instead of waiting for attacks to happen, agencies exploited flaws in the cybercriminals’ systems, delivering decisive blows that crippled their ability to operate. These operations signal a global push to crack down on cybercrime and the growing power of international law enforcement working together. But LockBit’s quick comeback is a stark reminder that the fight is far from over. As cyberthreats get more sophisticated, so must the tactics to stop them. While Cronos and Endgame were key wins, they also emphasise the need for even more global coordination. One recent effort is the UN’s first treaty aimed at creating universal laws and protocols for investigations. Beyond legal measures, the real battle is technical – governments, tech companies and civil groups must work together to not only hack the hackers but also slow down their ability to rebuild. Law enforcement is also turning to psychological operations (psyops) to disrupt cybercrime. By taking over dark web forums and ransomware leak sites, it is undermining the criminals’ credibility and creating paranoia within these networks. Cryptocurrency, the backbone of ransomware payments, is another focus . Authorities are increasingly freezing accounts linked to cybercriminals, cutting off their financial lifelines. The message is clear: law enforcement must stay ahead of fast-evolving threats, and organisations need to ramp up their defences. The battle against cybercrime is ongoing, and it’s going to take both relentless vigilance and smart, coordinated strategies to win.

SAINT PAUL, Minn. (AP) — Mariah Keopple and Alexandra Labelle scored their first goals of the season and the Montreal Victoire edged the Minnesota Frost 3-2 on Saturday. Marie-Philip Poulin's goal almost six minutes into the second period was the difference as she converted a 2-on-1 from Laura Stacey and Jennifer Gardiner and Montreal (2-2-0-1), which went 0 for 3 on the power play, won its third straight while handing Minnesota (3-1-1-1) its first regulation loss of the season. Despite having the better control of the action from the start Montreal fell behind 1-0 near the middle of the first period when Claire Thompson and Taylor Heise set up Britta Curl-Salemme for her third goal of the season. But in the last five minutes of the period Keopple scored on a pass from Claire Dalton, and Labelle banged in a rebound of her initial shot. Minnesota pulled into a tie at just 3:17 into the second period when Brooke McQuigge picked up her first goal during a scramble in front of the Montreal goal. Barely 2 1/2 minutes later the Victoire were back on top on Poulin's second goal of the season and Ann-Renee Desbiens, who made 22 saves, made that stand up. Maddie Rooney made 22 saves for Minnesota, which went 0-1 on the power play. Boston plays at Montreal on Monday. The Frost are home against Boston on Thursday. ___ AP women’s hockey: https://apnews.com/hub/womens-hockey The Associated Press

Reigning champion Kansas City edged Carolina and Detroit ripped Indianapolis on Sunday to reach an NFL-best 10-1 while Dallas shocked arch-rival Washington to snap a five-game losing streak. Patrick Mahomes threw for 269 yards and three touchdowns and Spencer Shrader kicked a 31-yard field goal on the final play to lift Kansas City over the host Panthers 30-27. Chuba Hubbard's 1-yard touchdown run and a 2-point conversion run had put Carolina level with 1:46 remaining, setting the stage for the Chiefs' seven-play, 57-yard march to set up the winning kick. Joining the Chiefs with a 10th triumph to keep a conference lead was Detroit, with Jahmyr Gibbs rushing for 90 yards and two touchdowns and David Montgomery running for another score in the Lions' 24-6 triumph at Indianapolis. A wild finish with 38 points in the last 5:16 marked the Dallas Cowboys' 34-26 victory at Washington, where the Commanders appeared to have lost, then made an amazing comeback only to fall in the end. Cooper Rush's second touchdown pass, a 22-yarder to Luke Schoonmaker with 5:16 remaining, gave Dallas a 20-9 edge, but Jayden Daniels threw a 4-yard touchdown pass to Zach Ertz and ran for a 2-point conversion to pull Washington within 20-17. KaVontae Turpin answered with a 99-yard kickoff return touchdown on the ensuing play, but again the Commanders responded as Austin Seibert kicked a 51-yard field goal and Daniels connected with Terry McLaurin on an 86-yard touchdown pass with 21 seconds remaining. Seibert, however, shockingly missed the conversion kick to keep Dallas ahead 27-26 and the Cowboys added a Juanyeh Thomas 43-yard kickoff return touchdown on the next play to seal victory. Sign up to get our free daily email of the biggest stories! At Miami, Tua Tagovailoa threw for 317 yards and four touchdowns to spark the Miami Dolphins over New England 34-15. At Chicago, Minnesota's John Parker Romo kicked a 29-yard field goal with 2:10 remaining in overtime to lift the Vikings over the host Bears 30-27. Sam Darnold threw for 330 yards and two touchdowns as the Vikings improved to 9-2. At Houston, Chig Okonkwo caught a 70-yard go-ahead touchdown pass from Will Levis in the fourth quarter as Tennessee upset the host Texans 32-27. Levis threw for 278 yards and two touchdowns and Tony Pollard ran for 119 yards and a touchdown as the Titans reached 3-8 and Houston fell to 7-5. Tampa Bay's Baker Mayfield threw for 294 yards to spark the Buccaneers over the host New York Giants 30-7. js/sevLANDOVER, Md. — The losing streak is done. Feel better? A Dallas team that went into Northwest Field as a 10.5-point underdog to Washington left with a 34-26 victory. The win stopped a five-game losing streak, the franchise’s longest since it lost seven straight in 2015. The Cowboys swept Washington last season, outscoring the Commanders by 63 points in the two games. What Dallas did this gorgeous afternoon wasn’t nearly as dominant, but it got the job done in a wild finish that saw 38 points scored in the final five minutes and 16 seconds. This team now turns around and faces the New York Giants in four days on Thanksgiving. But remember, the Cowboys haven’t won a game at AT&T Stadium this season. So that losing streak is also five games this season. Here are our five takeaways from Cowboys-Commanders: Defense rises to the occasion Dan Quinn molded the Cowboys into one of the league’s best defensive units before leaving to coach the Commanders. The transition to Mike Zimmer has been anything but smooth. But as the Cowboys start to get some players healthy on that side of the ball, this group is making strides. The Cowboys’ defense played one of its best games in a long time in the win over Washington. Defensive end Chauncey Golston intercepted a screen pass. The Cowboys came away with a fumble recovery in the second half and tormented rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels throughout the afternoon. Dallas came away with four sacks and allowed the Commanders to convert only 4 of 12 third-down attempts. Nothing special, until the end Brandon Aubrey has stood above his teammates with his performance in this disappointing season. Even he stumbled in this one. Aubrey had a field goal blocked and had a 41-yard attempt hit the right upright before the first quarter was done. Uncharacteristic? Yes. Everywhere but here. Aubrey has missed two field goals in a game only one other time in his brief career in Dallas. That came on this field last season, when he also had a field goal blocked and missed a 32-yarder. But the special teams issues didn’t stop with Aubrey. Bryan Anger had a punt deflected at the line and it traveled only 22 yards. This comes after the Cowboys faked a punt twice in recent weeks and failed to pick up the first down both times. And then? When the Commanders pulled within three points late, KaVontae Turpin fumbled the kickoff, picked it up on the 1-yard line then went 99 yards for a touchdown. The Cowboys then allowed the Commanders to score one play later, an 86-yard touchdown pass to Terry McLaurin that closed the gap to one after Washington missed the extra-point attempt. The miss forced the Commanders to try an onside kick, which Juanyeh Thomas scooped up and returned 43 yards for a touchdown to ice the game. Money pit Money isn’t everything. A team can win without its highest-paid player on the field. But its top five? That’s the position the Cowboys found themselves in entering Sunday’s game. None of the top five players on their payroll took the field, leaving the team $105.8 million light in terms of talent. The list: Dak Prescott ($44.6 million), DeMarcus Lawrence ($20.4 million), Zack Martin ($15.5 million), Trevon Diggs ($15.3 million) and Brandin Cooks ($10 million). Line dance The Cowboys traveled to our nation’s capital knowing Pro Bowl right guard Zack Martin wouldn’t play. Before they kicked off Sunday they were without left guard Tyler Smith as well. Smith was a limited participant in Friday’s practice and was listed as questionable. The club hoped he was trending toward being able to go in this game. He didn’t. That means T.J. Bass and Brock Hoffman were the starting guards. And it didn’t stop there. Rookie left tackle Tyler Guyton and Asim Richards were part of a rotation system, with Guyton getting the first two possessions of each half. It appeared to work fairly well. But Guyton, as he has for much of the season, struggled with penalties. He was called for holding in the third quarter, an illegal formation penalty on the next possession and had another illegal formation penalty declined. And then he was hit with a false start, resulting in Richards taking his place. Another corner Injuries have had an undeniable impact on the Cowboys’ fortunes. Corner has been hit particularly bad. When DaRon Bland made his regular season debut on Sunday, he became the sixth different corner to start this season. The list: Diggs, Bland, Caelen Carson, Josh Butler, Andrew Booth and Amani Oruwariye. ©2024 The Dallas Morning News. Visit dallasnews.com . The BJP last won Assembly polls in Delhi way back in 1993. The Arvind Kejriwal-led AAP has dominated the affairs in Delhi for the last one decade, registering back-to-back landslide victories in 2015 and 2020 elections. The BJP was routed both times, managing to scrape through with just three seats in 2015 and eight in 2020. This time, however, the party is confident of staging a comeback and end a long wait at the helm of affairs in the city. Another party functionary asserted that the signs of a "far better" performance of the BJP in the upcoming assembly polls are clear. "We won all the seven Lok Sabha seats this year and got more votes than AAP in 52 Assembly segments out of 70," said the Delhi BJP leader. Also, the image of Kejriwal as an honest, capable leader has received a "major dent" with a string of corruption allegations like liquor scam in which he went to jail, "Sheshmahal" scam, and the problems faced by the people due to bad roads, water shortage, pollution, dilapidated public transport among others, he claimed. Gupta said that the "grand victory" symbolised the "relentless hard work, indomitable enthusiasm, and dedication" of every BJP worker, who took the party's "principles and development agenda" to every household. Texans claim WR Diontae Johnson from Ravens after losing Tank Dell for season, per reportNEW YORK (AP) — Stocks wavered in afternoon trading on Wall Street Monday at the start of a holiday-shortened week. The S&P 500 rose 0.4%. A handful of technology companies helped support the gains. The Dow Jones Industrial Average slipped 63 points, or 0.2% as of 1:18 p.m. Eastern time. The tech-heavy Nasdaq composite rose 0.7%. Semiconductor giant Nvidia, whose enormous valuation gives it an outsize influence on indexes, rose 3%. Broadcom jumped 5.2% to also help support the broader market. Japanese automakers Honda Motor and Nissan said they are talking about combining in a deal that might also include Mitsubishi Motors. Honda rose 3.8% and Nissan rose 1.6% in Tokyo. Eli Lilly rose 3% after announcing that regulators approved Zepbound as the first and only prescription medicine for adults with sleep apnea. Department store Nordstrom fell 1.7% after it agreed to be taken private by Nordstrom family members and a Mexican retail group in a $6.25 billion deal. The Conference Board said that consumer confidence slipped in December. Its consumer confidence index fell back to 104.7 from 112.8 in November. Wall Street was expecting a reading of 113.8. The unexpectedly weak consumer confidence update follows several generally strong economic reports last week. One report showed the overall economy grew at a 3.1% annualized rate during the summer, faster than earlier thought. The latest report on unemployment benefit applications showed that the job market remains solid. A report on Friday said a measure of inflation the Federal Reserve likes to use was slightly lower last month than economists expected. Worries about inflation edging higher again had been weighing on Wall Street and the Fed. The central bank just delivered its third cut to interest rates this year, but inflation has been hovering stubbornly above its target of 2%. It has signaled that it could deliver fewer cuts to interest rates next year than it earlier anticipated because of concerns over inflation. Expectations for more interest rate cuts have helped drive a 24% gain for the S&P 500 in 2024. That drive included 57 all-time highs this year. Inflation concerns have added to uncertainties heading into 2025, which include the labor market's path ahead and shifting economic policies under an incoming President Donald Trump. "Put simply, much of the strong market performance prior to last week was driven by expectations that a best-case scenario was the base case for 2025," said Brent Schutte, chief investment officer at Northwestern Mutual Wealth Management Company Treasury yields edged higher in the bond market. The yield on the 10-year Treasury rose to 4.58% from 4.53% late Friday. European markets were mostly lower, while markets in Asia gained ground. Wall Street has several other economic reports to look forward to this week. On Tuesday, the U.S. will release its November report for sales of newly constructed homes. A weekly update on unemployment benefits is expected on Thursday. Markets in the U.S. will close early on Tuesday for Christmas Eve and will remain closed on Wednesday for Christmas.Published 5:31 pm Saturday, December 28, 2024 By Data Skrive There are six games on Sunday’s NBA schedule, among them the Memphis Grizzlies versus the Oklahoma City Thunder.
