ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (AP) — In a season that began with many questions and lowered expectations , it was apt watching Bills quarterback Josh Allen join coach Sean McDermott lay on the cold, wet sideline to make snow angels in celebrating Buffalo’s earliest clinching of a division title in team history. That Allen took part was no surprise. The newly engaged 28-year-old has maintained the happy-go-lucky approach he brought with him to Buffalo as a raw-talented athlete in 2018, while gradually blossoming into one of the NFL’s elite quarterbacks. For McDermott, it was a pleasant surprise to see the usually reserved eight-year coach finally let his hair down — figuratively, because the few jokes he does make are usually about being bald. With his latest do-it-all three-TD outing — one rushing, one receiving and, the coup de grace, being credited with receiving his own pass for a score off a lateral from Amari Cooper — in a 35-10 win over San Francisco on Sunday night , Allen continued making his strongest NFL MVP case. What’s also becoming apparent is how much McDermott deserves consideration for coach of the year honors. Without the two, the Bills (10-2) wouldn’t be in this position in becoming just the eighth NFL team — and first since Indianapolis in 2009 — to clinch a division title with at least five games remaining in their schedule. Eli Zimmerman was the focus of Avonworth’s defensive scheme for Saturday’s PIAA Class 3A championship game at Cumberland Valley’s Chapman Field, and who could blame the District 7 champion. The Northwestern senior carved up opponents the previous 15 weeks and eventually broke their collective will by busting out a long touchdown run or punt return for a score. The Antelopes made sure Zimmerman had just one run of more than 10 yards among his 29 carries, but the Tiger proved to contribute to key moments in the 36-33 overtime victory. Zimmerman first made sure a bad snap on third down in the last seconds of the first half didn’t go completely wrong by pouncing on the loose ball instead of trying to pick it up and run. On Northwestern’s first drive of the second half, Zimmerman recovered a teammate’s fumble inside the Avonworth 10-yard line. Two plays later, he scored from a yard out for a 23-16 Tigers lead. On Avonworth’s first offensive play after that, Zimmerman stripped Luca Neal and returned it to the Antelopes’ 37. Five plays later, Shane Hulmes plowed into the end zone for a yard out for a 30-16 advantage. “[Michael Lagowy] had him wrapped and I saw [Neal] carrying it a little loose,” Zimmerman said. “I ripped it out. We scored after that to give us a little momentum.” Zimmerman finished the game with 123 yards and three touchdowns. He finished the season with 2,671 yards and 27 rushing TDs. “He’s invaluable play after play,” head coach Josh Snyder said. Couldn’t get a stop Northwestern had Avonworth’s offense where it wanted in the Antelopes’ first two drives. They were off schedule and facing third and long. But then freshman Jaden Jones came from his receiver position to take a handoff from Neal and threw two strikes to extend the drives, both of which resulted in touchdowns. The Tigers played from behind on each of their first three possessions in part because of those pass plays by the Antelopes, but responded with scores to take a 17-16 lead and led 30-16 until late in the third quarter before Neal’s running skills took over. “[Neal] is a hell of an athlete,” Snyder said. “But we made a couple more plays than they did, and in championship games that’s what it takes to win.” “They ran a sweep pass and converted both times [in the first half],” Snyder recalled. “You have to win on first down against teams like that. We weren’t able to do that for much of the game. But we strung two plays together on first and second down [in overtime] and they got a little bit nervous after that. They tried a trick play. We tackle [Neal]. [The officials] call it incomplete. They had to kick a field goal. “I think four plays from 10 yards out we can find a way to score the ball.” The Tigers did it on one play. Notes — Northwestern captured District 11’s 12th state title, first since 2010 (Central Catholic). Bethlehem Catholic (2), Marian Catholic, Schuylkill Haven, Central Catholic (3), Mount Carmel, Parkland, Wilson and Liberty have captured PIAA gold. District 11 has not won state titles in Classes 5A and 6A. Parkland (2015) and Northwestern last season were the only District 11 teams to reach the state final since 2010. — Tigers quarterback Shane Leh finished his junior season with 1,585 yards and 24 touchdowns after completing 12 of 15 passes Saturday for 114 yards and a score. “I thought he played unbelievable,” Snyder said. “He made some big passes. He was just really nifty today. He’s played the best ball of his season in the playoffs. When he’s cooking, that takes us to the next level, for sure.” Leh completed his first 11 passes Saturday. — Sophomore receiver Michael Lagowy came up big again for Northwestern. He had three catches for 41 yards, including an acrobatic 23-yard reception to the Antelopes’ 5-yard line on the Tigers’ second touchdown drive of the game. Lagowy had a similar grab in last week’s state semifinal against Danville. He also caught the back-breaking touchdown pass on a trick play the PIAA quarterfinal against Scranton Prep. — Brady Zimmerman had a sack and Bryer Reichard had his 26th tackle for loss this season for the Tigers. Reichard had two other tackles for no gain. Morning Call senior writer Tom Housenick can be reached at thousenick@mcall.com ©2024 The Morning Call. Visit mcall.com . Hundreds of people came out to watch the Premier, MLAs and Provincial staff take on the Mayor, City Councillors and members of Winnipeg’s Public Service, in a rematch of the 1974 game which seen then “City Fathers” beat the “Golden Boys.” “It was fun to reignite that rivalry, that 50-year-old rivalry. You play the game once every 50 years, so it was just a great way to mark Winnipeg 150, celebrate the year, and have fun,” said Gillingham. “We’re the underdogs right, so I mean if we even have a respectful showing I think we’ll be pretty happy about that,” said Kinew. Kinew and Gillingham were both all smiles heading into the game and joked about how they prepared for this moment. “I took an Advil this morning... and drank 3 glasses of water,” said Gillingham. “In terms of preparation, first thing I did, is I had 3 pieces of my wife’s vinarterta this morning and other than that it’s just go out there and hope for the best,” said Kinew. The city came out strong scoring the first goal of the game, and despite a strong performance from the province’s goalie, they were able to put five more past her winning the rivalry game 6-0, and in true sports fashion, the Mayor was congratulated by having water dumped on him by City Councillor Sherri Rollins. “Were the provincial team, so ya mom, I made team Manitoba finally,” said Kinew.Johnnies don't fold in the cold to win D-III playoff opener
The holiday season is finally here. I am so excited. It is the most wonderful time of year. What I enjoy the most is spending time with my family and friends and doing holiday things, such as going to see Christmas lights, making crafts, baking cookies, and activities that allow me to create memories with my family. One of my favorite activities is making crafts with my children. It allows us to have a physical reminder year-to-year of things we have done and the fun we have had. I love the quality time and the memories we can create. I started planning my Christmas crafts in October and found a great resource I plan to use this holiday season, and thought you might enjoy it too. The 4-H Clover Holiday Activity Guide has all the things a child loves. It has science, such as coding and experiments (Who wouldn’t want to make snow?). It has recipes for cookies and brownies for us, and even some for your favorite animal. Knowing that some of the cookie recipes were submitted by 4-H Club members around the county makes this extra special to me. It’s like children stepping up and learning from other children, finding ways to express what they are passionate about. How awesome is that? The guide has craft ideas for you to do with your children, or maybe you would like to take a craft to church or your holiday celebration to do with all the little ones. It has a little bit of everything. For me, there are two things I like the most: one, it is free; two, you can download it digitally or print it. I don’t know about you, but I love having a physical copy of something in my hands. Spending quality time together is a gift that keeps on giving. Now, imagine accidentally learning along the way. How can you go wrong with that? Remember, 4-H is a community that encourages growth, creativity, leadership, and a sense of service, and there’s no better time to get involved than right now. If this is something that interests you, I would love to help create a 4-H Clover account for you or your child. We can even print out a Holiday Activity Guide for you and your family. So please give me a call at (910) 671-3276, or send me an email at Jade_McNeill@ncsu.edu. I would love to help you with this and talk about all the cool things we do in 4-H year round. As we celebrate the holidays and look forward to the New Year, let’s remember that the best gift we can give our children is our time, attention, and support in their mental growth. So why not make this holiday season extra special with 4-H Clover? I know my family will. If you need any help registering, logging in, or simply want to learn more about 4-H and how it can benefit your family, I’m here to assist. Feel free to give us a call or send us an email, and I’ll be happy to guide you through the process. This holiday season, let’s make learning and spending time together a gift that keeps on giving. 4-H is a community that encourages growth, creativity, leadership, and a sense of service, and there’s no better time to get involved than right now. The Associated Press created this story using technology provided by Data Skrive and data from Sportradar .President-elect Donald Trump has tapped former Soros Fund Management chief investment officer Scott Bessent as his next Treasury Secretary, according to multiple reports. Over the past few months, the hedge-fund manager has become Trump’s “ go-to economic adviser ,” earning Trump’s ear on a number of matters, according to The Wall Street Journal ( NWSA -0.20% ), which first reported the selection on Friday. Trump has yet to announce the nomination. Bessent has built friendly relationships with Trump family members and Vice President-elect J.D. Vance, and was one of the few to recommend Vance as his running mate, according to the publication. And the love has appeared to go both ways. In a speech last month, Trump called Bessent “one of the top analysts on Wall Street.” Bessent was also backed by several key Trump advisers , Bloomberg reported. The pair met at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort last Friday, according to Bloomberg, but the conversation was not an interview for the Treasury role, people familiar with the process said. In an interview with CNBC last week, Bessent said that there had been “no discussions about jobs,” but that he will do whatever Trump asks. Over the years, the 62-year-old founder of Key Square Capital Management macro fund has donated millions to Republican causes, giving $1 million to Trump’s inaugural committee following the 2016 presidential election, per the Journal. In 2000, Bessent hosted a fundraiser for Democratic candidate and Vice President Al Gore. This time around, Bessent was one of the few Wall Street names to throw his weight behind Trump’s campaign early on, at a time when executives were directing funding towards Republican contender Nikki Haley. Treasury Secretary is one of the highest-level cabinet positions, responsible for shaping national economic and tax policy. Bessent has shown he is aligned with with the president-elect on a number of economic policies , including his stance on cryptocurrency . “I have been excited about the president’s embrace of crypto and I think it fits very well with the Republican Party,” Bessent said in June. “Crypto is about freedom and the crypto economy is here to stay.” Among other promises to the crypto industry on the campaign trail, Trump vowed to create a national Bitcoin reserve, as well as a “Bitcoin and crypto presidential advisory council.” In an interview with Fox Business ( FOXA +0.40% ) prior to Election Day, Bessent said that the priority of the incoming Trump administration should be to extend or make permanent the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act. The Trump-era legislation, which slashed the corporate tax rate from 35% to 21%, is set to expire in 2025. Bessent also touted markets’ positive response to Trump’s election win in an op-ed for the Journal published Sunday, which Bloomberg reported was well-received by Trump allies. “Asset prices are fickle, and long-term economic performance is the ultimate measuring stick,” Bessent wrote. “But recent days prove markets’ unambiguous embrace of the Trump 2.0 economic vision. Markets are signaling expectations of higher growth, lower volatility and inflation, and a revitalized economy for all Americans.” Trump had reportedly considered a slate of current and former finance industry executives, including John Paulson, a hedge-fund billionaire and founder of investment manager Paulson & Co., and Howard Lutnick, CEO of investment giant Cantor Fitzgerald and Trump transition team co-chair. Paulson removed himself from the running for Treasury pick in a statement to the Journal Tuesday. The investor cited “complex financial obligations” preventing him from holding an official role, but said that he intends to remain “actively involved with the President’s economic team and helping in the implementation of President Trump’s outstanding policy proposals.” In the week since his election, Trump has already filled a number of high-level roles in his incoming administration. Trump tapped Florida Sen. Marco Rubio for Secretary of State Wednesday. Other picks include former Immigration Customs Enforcement director Tom Homan as the “border czar”; New York Rep. Elise Stefanik as nominee for ambassador to the United Nations; and Susie Wiles as chief of staff, the first woman ever appointed to the role. Former adviser Stephen Miller was also named deputy chief of policy, attorney Lee Zeldin was picked to lead the Environmental Protection Agency, Florida Rep. Mike Waltz was tapped national security adviser, and South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem was selected to run the Department of Homeland Security. 📬 Sign up for the Daily Brief Our free, fast, and fun briefing on the global economy, delivered every weekday morning.
Nosferatu Review: Lily-Rose Depp Stuns in Powerfully Unsettling Horror By He is coming. It’s been over 100 years since F.W. Murnau’s Nosferatu — and over 45 since Klaus Kinski donned the pointy ears. 2024 seems as good a time as any for the return of . The film once again follows a haunted young woman and the terrifying vampire obsessed with her. has had his hand at eerie, unsettling scares that creep under your skin in films like The VVitch and The Lighthouse. His dark style lends itself to the shadowy, forboding nature of Nosferatu. While some studios have adopted a recent practice of remaking movies that came out a mere decade ago, a remake of Nosferatu makes sense. While the original film has remained a classic and a horror staple, it was created before the widespread existence of talkies, or films with synchronized sound. Eggers readapts that story, based originally on Bram Stoker’s Dracula, with modern technology, dialogue, and a fresh perspective. Although Thomas Hutter (Nicholas Hoult) remains an integral part of the story, there is a lot more consideration placed upon his wife, Ellen (Lily-Rose Depp), who is the subject of much of the horrors Nosferatu inflicts. Eggers has been trying to get this movie off the ground since 2015, and you can feel how much passion he has for this material. His shot compositions are exquisite, as he plays around with Nosferatu’s imposing silhouette. The atmosphere he crafts is surreal and nightmarish. Even though the titular character does not appear on screen for a majority of the film, you can feel his presence in every scene. This is a return to unnerving horror after Eggers’s brief departure in The Northman. He excels at his work here, collaborating with cinematographer Jarin Blaschke to create dynamic, beautiful shots designed to grab your attention. Nosferatu is a visually arresting experience that fills viewers with cold, unmistakable dread. The performances are a significant part of what sells the terror. Hoult has turned in many excellent performances this year in films like Juror #2, The Order, and even The Garfield Movie. This is another notch on his belt, as he brings an understated peril to the doomed protagonist. 2024 has had no shortage of masterful horror movie performances. From Nell Tiger Free in The First Omen to Naomi Scott in Smile 2, female actors have been crushing it. We can add another name to the list of incredible performances: Lily-Rose Depp. Anya Taylor-Joy was initially cast as Ellen before being replaced by Depp. Taylor-Joy is such a phenomenal actress that losing her can be disappointing. But somehow, Depp brings something powerful, sensual, and unexpected. It’s her best performance yet. We haven’t even gotten the chance to talk about Bill Skarsgård. He’s become the action hero in two movies from this year, Boy Kills World and The Crow, but he’s often at his best when he plays villains like in IT and John Wick: Chapter 4. We’ve seen him transform into Pennywise before, but even under all the clown makeup, you can tell it’s him, even if his performance is terrifying. Skarsgård is operating on a different level here. You would not be able to tell that it’s Skarsgård in this movie because his work as Count Orlok does not look or sound like him in the slightest. His voice is deeper, he’s covered in makeup, and he is haunting to look at. Dafoe is an interesting casting choice, as he once played Nosferatu in his Oscar-nominated role in the 2000 film Shadow of the Vampire, which was based on the making of the original 1922 film. He’s excellent, as is the rest of this stellar cast. The characters are always at the whim of Nosferatu, rarely ever getting a break from his wrath. Once the story truly starts, it never stops. Like all the best remakes, this movie uses the same ingredients as the original and cooks up a new recipe tailor-made for genre fans and lovers of the 1922 movie. The lighting, the use of darkness, and the camera movements are all so precise and constructed to bring the best unease and jump scares possible. Nosferatu is a horror movie that works not only with the scary vampire but with how his existence affects the characters. The inclusion of dialogue allows for more complexities in the characters’ relationships. It transfixes you the same way this tale has done for over a century. As ComingSoon’s explains, a score of 8 equates to “Great.” While there are a few minor issues, this score means that the art succeeds at its goal and leaves a memorable impact.
