The 2024 capital investment makes for a total so far of about $4.4 billion in Nebraska data centers to help meet growing demand for Google Cloud, artificial intelligence innovations and services such as the company’s search, maps and workspace programs, said spokesman Dan Harbeke. Just within the past few months, he said, Google’s sprawling data center site in northwest Omaha became operational but is not finished growing. Its newest data center project in Lincoln remains under construction on roughly 580 acres. And the original Google campus in Nebraska, a Papillion project that broke ground on 275 acres in late 2019, has continued to expand in various ways. “We’re effectively continuing to build out those footprints,” said Harbeke, regional head of public policy and external affairs. “We are not announcing any new sites this year but we are announcing continued growth and expansion across all three sites here in Nebraska.” Also during a news event Monday, Google announced a different kind of investment — philanthropic donations to support workforce development. Such contributions are separate and in addition to construction improvements, Harbeke said. It is claiming the minister’s decision was “unreasonable” and “driven by improper purposes.” The review was carried out through the Investment Canada Act, which allows the government to investigate any foreign investment with potential to harm national security. Industry Minister François-Philippe Champagne said in a statement at the time the government was taking action to address “specific national security risks,” though it didn’t specify what those risks were. Google on Monday showed off a new quantum computing chip that it said was a major breakthrough that could bring practical quantum computing closer to reality. A custom chip called "Willow" does in minutes what it would take leading supercomputers 10 septillion years to complete, according to Google Quantum AI founder Hartmut Neven. Neven's team of about 300 people at Google is on a mission to build quantum computing capable of handling otherwise unsolvable problems like safe fusion power and stopping climate change. A quantum computer that can tackle these challenges is still years away, but Willow marks a significant step in that direction, according to Neven and members of his team. While still in its early stages, scientists believe that superfast quantum computing will eventually be able to power innovation in a range of fields. Quantum research is seen as a critical field and both the United States and China have been investing heavily in the area, while Washington has also placed restrictions on the export of the sensitive technology. Olivier Ezratty, an independent expert in quantum technologies, told AFP in October that private and public investment in the field has totaled around $20 billion worldwide over the past five years. Regular computers function in binary fashion: they carry out tasks using tiny fragments of data known as bits that are only ever either expressed as 1 or 0. But fragments of data on a quantum computer, known as qubits, can be both 1 and 0 at the same time -- allowing them to crunch an enormous number of potential outcomes simultaneously. Crucially, Google's chip demonstrated the ability to reduce computational errors exponentially as it scales up -- a feat that has eluded researchers for nearly 30 years. The breakthrough in error correction, published in leading science journal Nature, showed that adding more qubits to the system actually reduced errors rather than increasing them -- a fundamental requirement for building practical quantum computers. The Regional Development Implementation and Co-ordination Committee, led by the Government Delivery Unit, has embarked on a tour of the project sites to assess projects that had previously stalled in Siaya County. The motive is to ensure that the contractors are back on site in an effort to ascertain that works continue towards completion. The contractors have been called upon to resume work on the projects that had previously delayed completion or stalled at various stages due to financial constraints after the government availed funds and payments were made to the various contractors for the completion of projects by the national government. The committee, led by Director for Delivery in the Government Delivery Unit Silvance Osele, visited various projects in the Bondo Sub-county round to verify actual works on the ground while ascertaining progress levels and addressing the existing challenges. “Works were scaled down because of financial challenges, and there was a promise that funds were being mopped up to accelerate the works to completion. We are at a stage where funds have streamed in and quite a number of contractors have been paid, and therefore this committee is going round to verify that they are actually back on site,” Osele said. The exercise was also done to assist the committee in preparations for the next budgeting cycle to know how to prioritise and ensure the projects are implemented smoothly by addressing the emerging challenges. Amongst the projects visited included Dhogoye Causeway in Usenge, valued at Sh1.9 billion, intended to reduce flooding in the area, boost blue economy activities, and also open up movement for residents. Bondo–Liunda Road was another project visited; the road was cited as being at 80 per cent completion, with construction of the bridge expected to be complete by 30 December this year and 2.7 kilometres of the road expected to be completed by March 2025. Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and Technology (JOOUST) also had several projects, including an administration block, a library complex, and a blue economy research hub that stands at 90 per cent completion and is expected to be operational by the end of February 2025, with the only remaining installations being fresh water and electricity. “At the same institution we have an administration block being done, a library, and a tuition block; all these are being accelerated within the broader plan of the national government to ensure the flow of funding so that these projects are completed in time,” said Osele. While speaking during the visit by the Government Delivery Unit officials, JOOUST Vice Chancellor Prof. Emily Akuno said that the completion of the library complex will be a huge boost not only to the appearance of the institution but will also open up the academic space to allow increasing the numbers of students and lessen the pressure on the already tight space they are operating from. Akuno also lauded the government’s endeavour to see the operationalisation of the Blue Economy Research Hub at Miyanndhe, adding that the institution’s research partners have already availed equipment to the tune of Sh50 million and the facility has several ‘ready to go’ laboratory spaces that go even beyond the blue economy, as they intend to delve into health research as well.
