'I went to the tip for last minute Christmas gifts - and got some huge bargains'NJ Benson recorded a first-half double-double, and finished with 22 points and 17 rebounds, as host DePaul rolled to an 84-65 victory over Loyola Maryland on Saturday in Chicago. With David Skogman out due to a lower-body injury, the 6-foot-8, Missouri State-transfer Benson made the most of his first start this season. Benson posted 14 points on 7-of-9 shooting and grabbed 12 rebounds in the first half, as DePaul (9-4) focused on its inside game and outscored Loyola Maryland 28-12 in the paint en route to a 44-26 halftime lead. Benson, who averaged 6.5 points and 4.0 rebounds entering the game, matched a career high in scoring Saturday, while those boards are a personal best. Jacob Meyer added 12 points for the Blue Demons, one of the nation's top 3-point shooting teams that went just 5 of 24 from distance, but scored 52 points in the paint. DePaul bounced back following consecutive losses to St. John's and Northwestern by a combined 48 points. Jacob Theodosiou had 22 points and Milos Ilic scored 13 for the Greyhounds (5-6), who shot 38.5 percent in the first half and committed 15 overall turnovers while falling to 1-67 against major-conference opponents since February 1982. DePaul scored the game's first eight points, beginning with a Benson dunk. Loyola didn't record its first field goal until Ilic's bucket with 14:11 remaining in the opening half, but used a 9-0 run to get within 13-12. However, Benson and DePaul's dominance in the paint never allowed the Greyhounds to go ahead. The Blue Demons led 18-16, then scored the next seven points, highlighted by dunks from Benson and CJ Gunn (11 points). DePaul was ahead 32-23 with 3:20 left in the first half when it took control by scoring 12 straight points before Jordan Stiemke's 3 made it an 18-point game at the break. The Blue Demons were 1-of-11 from 3 through the first 20 minutes. In the second half, another Benson dunk and two free throws were featured during a 12-2 run that put the Blue Demons up 66-37 with roughly 12 minutes remaining in the contest. --Field Level MediaSyria Hit by Airstrikes as Israel Targets Multiple Military Sites

TAT Technologies Signs a 5-Year, $17 Million MRO Agreement with Major North American Cargo Carrier( ) shares are starting the week on a positive note. In morning trade, the health imaging technology company's shares are up 1.5% to $251.90. What's happening? Investors have been buying the high-flying ASX tech stock on Monday following the release of an . According to the release, the company has signed a $30 million, seven-year contract with Duly Health and Care (DHC). It is the largest independent, multi-specialty physician-directed medical group in the Midwest of the United States. It notes that the DHC brand includes DuPage Medical Group, Quincy Medical Group, and The South Bend Clinic. It supports over 40 radiologists, 1,000 physicians, and 150 outpatient clinics. Based on a transactional licensing model, the contract will see Pro Medicus' cloud-engineered Visage 7 Enterprise Imaging Platform (Visage 7), including Visage 7 Open Archive and Visage 7 Workflow modules, implemented throughout DHC. This will provide a unified diagnostic imaging platform. Management expects the migration from DHC's legacy PACS archive and vendor neutral archive to Visage 7 Open Archive to complete during the second quarter of the 2025 calendar year. Planning for the rollout is to commence immediately and will be based on Visage's proven cloud-based implementation process. Management commentary Pro Medicus CEO's, Dr Sam Hupert, was pleased with the deal for a number of reasons. He said: Duly Health and Care is an important deal for us as they are in the private radiology/outpatient space, an area of the market where we are starting to see increased opportunity. They also join a long list of Visage 7 clients to opt for a fully cloud-engineered solution, which, as a result of our CloudPACS strategy, is becoming the standard in the North American healthcare IT market. Our pipeline remains strong and spans all market segments including academic medical centers, IDNs and the private/teleradiology market. As has been the case with many of our recent contracts, this deal is for our "full stack" comprising all three Visage products namely viewer, workflow and archive, a trend we see continuing. Should you buy Pro Medicus shares? Goldman Sachs is a fan of the company and recently put a buy rating and $278.00 price target on its shares. While the broker acknowledges that its shares are not cheap, it feels they deserve this premium valuation. It said: PME is not cheap, trading on 114x FY26E EV/EBITDA, but we highlight its revenue/margin outlook, unique cloud offering, and significant long-term opportunity. Additionally, with a focus on the US regulatory outlook, we believe MedTech is increasingly being evaluated as a safe haven within healthcare as it is generally more insulated from impending policy volatility.

NoneBy Brendan Marks, Michael Silver, Jeff Howe and Dianna Russini Bill Belichick, the longtime NFL coach who won six Super Bowls with the New England Patriots but has not led a team in a year, will be the next football coach at the University of North Carolina, sources briefed on the matter told The Athletic on Wednesday. The deal is expected to be for $30 million over three years, according to sources briefed on the matter. Advertisement Belichick, who left the Patriots after the 2023 season, will move to the college ranks after spending his entire coaching career in the NFL. He agreed to fill the vacancy left by Mack Brown , the winningest coach in North Carolina’s history, who was fired just before the end of a tumultuous 2024 regular season in Chapel Hill. During his 24 seasons with the Patriots, Belichick won six championships while paired with Tom Brady at quarterback, a run that cemented Belichick as one of the NFL’s most decorated coaches. He has 333 wins, including games in the regular season and playoffs, and is 14 victories away from tying Don Shula for the NFL career record for head coaches. Belichick has worked in the media since departing New England, but it has long been clear that he was looking to coach again. The opportunity to do so comes in Chapel Hill, where the Tar Heels have not won a conference title since 1980 . The program has been to 14 bowl games since 2008 but has won 10 games in a season just once since 1997, the final year of Brown’s first stint as head coach. Belichick, 72, spent some time in college football this year at Washington, where his son Steve Belichick joined the Huskies as defensive coordinator under first-year head coach Jedd Fisch. Sources briefed on Bill Belichick’s interactions, speaking on condition of anonymity to discuss private deliberations, said Washington successfully used Belichick’s full Patriots defensive scheme this season. Steve Belichick is expected to join his father’s North Carolina staff after one year with Washington, per sources. Steve’s expected role with the Tar Heels is not finalized yet, but the 37-year-old previously coached as a defensive assistant, safeties coach, defensive backs coach and outside linebackers coach with the Patriots. Advertisement Bill’s father, Steve, worked in college football for more than 40 years (including a stop at UNC). Belichick also maintained a close relationship with Nick Saban, the longtime Alabama head coach who retired in January . Saban won seven national titles in his college career as a head coach – and also was a defensive coordinator for Belichick with the Cleveland Browns in the early 1990s. Still, UNC will be Belichick’s first college coaching position of any type; he began his career with the Baltimore Colts and also had stints with the Detroit Lions , Denver Broncos , New York Giants and the New York Jets along with the Browns and the Patriots. In an appearance Monday on “The Pat McAfee Show,” Belichick made his pitch for what a college program could look like under his leadership. “The college program would be a pipeline to the NFL for the players that had the ability to play in the NFL,” he said. “It would be a professional program, training, nutrition, scheme, coaching, techniques that would transfer to the NFL. It would be an NFL program at a college level and an education that would get the players ready for their career after football, whether that was (at) the end of their college career or at the end of their pro career. GO DEEPER Mandel: North Carolina is going to regret hiring Bill Belichick “But it would be geared toward developing the player, time management, discipline, structure and all that, that would be life skills, regardless of whether they’re in the NFL or somewhere in the business.” By moving to the college ranks, Belichick might sacrifice the pursuit of a record he once appeared destined to break. For a long time, surpassing Shula’s NFL wins record was a driving force for Belichick, a chance to one-up the coach who once said that Patriots scandals “diminished” what Belichick built in New England. But sources close to Belichick say he was turned off by the NFL’s hiring cycle last winter , when only the Atlanta Falcons opted to interview him even though eight teams had openings. Belichick was expected to have a stronger NFL market this offseason; three franchises have already fired their coaches — the Jets, the Chicago Bears and the New Orleans Saints — and another five to seven openings are expected. Whether a stop at UNC weakens or burnishes his chances of returning to the NFL, his shift to the college game is a late twist in the career of an NFL lifer. The buzz around Belichick hit a fever pitch in the past week. For the Tar Heels, finding someone to replace Brown, who was fired in late November, had proved more difficult than anticipated. Several names had been linked to the job without panning out, including Tulane head coach Jon Sumrall, arguably the top candidate from the Group of 5 level, who declared Sunday that he would stay put. Advertisement Amid discussions about several candidates, UNC had ongoing contact with Belichick, which hung over the search as a wild card. His hiring ultimately capped a dramatic process to fill one of the most enticing vacancies available in the college ranks. A long-simmering power struggle at UNC between athletic director Bubba Cunningham and North Carolina’s Board of Trustees played a major role. After Brown was fired, Cunningham appeared on UNC’s “Carolina Insider” podcast and detailed what he was looking for in the Tar Heels’ next football coach. “We have to develop this program,” Cunningham said. “As we’ve said, we’ve been right at the cusp of really great seasons: getting to eight, nine wins. How do we get to 10, 11? Who can get us to that level?” The Tar Heels also had reason to replace the 73-year-old Brown with a younger coach more suited for the long haul of elevating the program to contend for conference championships and the College Football Playoff. With help from an advisory committee, Cunningham hoped to cull an initial list of roughly 30 names – which included Belichick, per a senior school official familiar with the search process — down to 10-12. GO DEEPER Did Bill Belichick abandon his quest for the NFL victories record? Never say never “But all the coaches we’re talking to right now are playing, and so they’re continuing to be in championship games or in the playoffs,” he added. “So it’ll probably take a week or so.” North Carolina officials, including Cunningham, spoke with Belichick last Wednesday and met with him in person on Thursday. Sources familiar with the board’s thinking believed that it, as well as UNC’s highest-profile boosters, preferred that Belichick be the one to succeed Brown. But multiple people briefed on the school’s conversations with Belichick described a disconnect between the coach’s and the school’s expectations for the terms of the job, as well as discord within UNC about whether its conversations between Belichick and members of the board had followed its normal procedures. Advertisement There is also another major apparent tension: NFL and college football are not the same sport, despite college football’s recent elements of professionalization since the legalization of name, image and likeness (NIL) deals, along with more freedom in player movement. Those significant developments have prompted universities to hire general managers, who handle roster management and bring on analysts to scrutinize finances much in the way professional sporting leagues hire salary cap experts. Of course, college sports are not nearly as regulated and regimented as professional sports. There are no multiyear contracts. Players can transfer every year. While there will be a cap on upcoming revenue sharing (around $20 million), it’s possible and perhaps likely that NIL payments will keep the sport from having a true salary cap. In college, coaches are at the top of their programs. But they must spend much more of their time fundraising with donors, recruiting high school players on the road, making sure players attend class and other duties away from on-field coaching. One of Belichick’s close friends, Saban, just left the sport in part because he didn’t want to deal with it anymore. The NFL and college calendars are also very different. In college football, it’s more of a marathon than a sprint, despite the NFL season being much longer. The offseason for coaches in college football is more demanding and time intensive. As one former NFL coach who transitioned to life as a college staffer in the past year told The Athletic : “There’s not a big summer break, like you get in the NFL, when coaches can truly unwind, like phone is off. College isn’t as hard of a season — not even close — but it’s much more year-round.” But for Belichick, the autonomy given to a college head coach could be a draw. One reason Belichick didn’t yield much NFL interest last offseason was the way the Patriots roster fell apart in his final few seasons. In New England, Belichick ran the entire football operation, serving as the sole and final decision maker. And the resulting roster in his final years was among the worst in the league, resulting in the split when New England went just 4-13 in 2023. The Patriots’ downturn disincentivized NFL teams from offering the total control Belichick seeks. Belichick’s final years in New England were also defined by drama, first due to a deteriorating relationship with Brady, who won his seventh Super Bowl at quarterback for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers after leaving the Patriots in 2020, then amid tension with Robert Kraft, the team’s owner. At UNC, Belichick can run the program without answering to anyone about football decisions. There will be other challenges — like NIL, the transfer portal and navigating boosters — that are more complicated than reporting to one owner, but football decisions in college go through the head coach, and now Belichick can yield that kind of power again. In its best form, it lets Belichick flex an unrivaled knowledge of the game, built from studying football and reading books on the sport as a young kid at the Naval Academy while his dad coached with the team. Bill Belichick emphasized "IF" he was coaching in a college program, it would be "a professional program." 👀 @PatMcAfeeShow "The college program would be a pipeline to the NFL for the players that have the ability to play in the NFL." pic.twitter.com/p2raPzm2DN — ESPN (@espn) December 9, 2024 With the transfer portal open, Belichick now must simultaneously hire a staff — something people familiar with his thinking say he has already begun doing — and evaluate the Tar Heels’ roster to figure out which incumbent players are worth fighting to keep. Then there’s the matter of high school recruiting, something Belichick has never done before. UNC’s class, which is ranked 90th nationally per 247Sports, only has nine commits right now — and arguably its most important recruit, four-star quarterback Bryce Baker , opted not to sign during the early signing period last week in the wake of Brown’s firing. (Baker has since visited Penn State , and LSU also remains in the mix.) Keeping him in UNC’s class should be a priority for Belichick and whoever he hires to run the Tar Heels’ offense. Advertisement North Carolina has never been mistaken for a football school, with its men’s basketball team playing top fiddle with its six Division I national championships. Belichick won’t change that historical standard, but his name recognition has the potential to do for UNC what Deion Sanders has done for Colorado. “Coach Prime” obviously brings much more energy and flash than a 72-year-old Belichick will, but the pure curiosity — how Brady’s longtime coach deals with teenagers — will be high. And as was the case with Sanders, UNC doesn’t necessarily need to be good under Belichick, at least not immediately, to garner more attention than it has in quite some time. The Tar Heels will be a nationwide object of fascination, as college and pro football fans alike tune in to see how the experiment turns out. None(From left) BJ Pascual, Denise Julia and Killa Kush. Images: Josh Tolentino via Instagram/@bjpascual, @denisejvlia, @killakushla Even Christmas was not spared from the drama that stemmed between Denise Julia , BJ Pascual and Killa Kush as the three-way feud made headlines in what was supposed to be a festive season. The controversial spat stemmed from Pascual making claims about Denise’s alleged “unprofessionalism,” which was agreed on by the content creator. However, the feud — which included several screenshots posted on December 25 — escalated with the R&B singer hinting at taking the battle to court. Curious how the feud began? Don’t miss out on the details behind their controversial spat, as well as other trending entertainment headlines from December 20 to 26. Denise Julia and BJ Pascual | Image: Instagram/@denisejvlia, @bjpascual The spat between Denise Julia , BJ Pascual and Killa Kush began after the celebrity photographer revealed that the singer-songwriter was his “worst celebrity experience” on Killa Kush’s “Bad B*tch Bible” podcast. “Nanggigigil pa din ako,” Pascual began. “Si Denise Julia. I have heard so many things about her,” he began. “I guess medyo kasalanan ko rin that I still took the job, and it was more like a passion project because her manager JV (Denise Julia’s manager) called me many times, like, would message me on Instagram, and so we had a meeting,” he admitted. Pascual detailed his experience being asked to work on Denise’s album cover and music video, and then the latter’s team questioned the expenses and canceling them. “Ang babayaran na lang nila is manpower and materials. There is no talent fee. This is charity work na,” he said. “Sabi ng manager ko, ‘They want to cancel daw the shoot.’ The reason was nag-flake daw ‘yung hairstylist nila.” “Girl... This was already 10 PM. Ang call time namin is 6 AM [the next day]. Sya [Denise] 8 AM. How many hours na lang before the shoot? We have been setting the set since 4 PM,” he added. Pascual also shared that Denise’s camp also declined to pay the cancellation fee, while adding that he ended up shooting another celebrity for the set so as not to go to waste. “After that, I never heard from her. No thank you, no sorry, no anything. No ‘what happened?’ Nothing,” he recalled. Denise Julia and BJ Pascual. Image: Instagram/@denisejvlia, @bjpascual Denise Julia spoke up on BJ Pascual ’s claims of “unprofessionalism” against her, clarifying that it was the photographer’s team who canceled their scheduled shoot due to their “differences in production processes.” She made a tell-all via her Instagram Stories on Christmas Day, including in her posts the screenshots of her manager’s conversation with Pascual’s manager regarding the shoot. According to the singer-songwriter, her team reached out to Pascual back in May, and they had an online meeting in June, and they also had personal calls to exchange ideas for the shoot. In July, Denise’s manager gave a budget of P650,000. But Pascual’s team—despite the former “following up many times”—did not immediately get back to the singer’s team if the “budget is doable.” “We can’t really have a shoot date without us being sure if the budget is even feasible to them. Because on our end, we understand if this is not something they can work with,” she said. “We would have pulled back immediately already from the start if they had only told us that this is not doable for them, that that’s not the price range they can work with,” she noted. However, three days before the shoot and already three weeks after Denise’s team sent their initial budget, Pascual’s team, according to Denise, sent a cost sheet of P1.2 million. The singer’s team tried to extend their budget to P800,000 because they “really wanted to do this.” Her manager gave out options so that “none of the efforts go to waste,” although Pascual’s team was only able to adjust the cost to P1 million two days before the shoot. Denise then showed a screenshot of the conversation between her manager and Pascual’s, in which the singer’s manager pointed out that from experience, “no vendors would do anything without a budget actually agreed upon.” “I think that’s where the confusion is,” Denise’s manager said in the screenshot. “I should have been more straightforward with how important it was that we agreed on a number before confirming anything. I thought that was a protocol for y’all as well so I apologize for me assuming that’s the case,” the manager regretted. Pascual’s manager then replied, “Okay, so due to the differences in our production processes. I think it would be best to cancel the shoot.” Denise added that her manager had suggested pushing the shoot to a later date. “But ultimately at the end, BJ’s team, not us, canceled the shoot.” “I am fully acknowledging my mistake for not reaching out after this anymore, but it was because I didn’t know the extent of his frustration until everything aired on social media and it blew off proportion,” Denise said. Denise Julia (left) and Killa Kush | Image: Instagram/@denisejvlia, @killakushla Apart from BJ Pascual, Denise Julia is also voicing her grievances against Killa Kush (also known by her real name Acushla Obusan), with a threat to file charges. On Christmas Day, Kush took to her Instagram stories to express her “devastation” over how her recent podcast episode with Pascual sparked controversy after they aired their experience with Denise. She shared the context and screenshots of her conversation with the singer and her team about their past collaboration. “It’s truly devastating how this has played out. I could play the receipts game all day long with all our projects since 2022, but it’s literally Christmas day,” Kush said. “As a collaborator, I’ve already spent 400K mounting her first album launch event with no down payment (and had to fulfill everything in 4 days), then got paid over a month after,” she wrote. Kush disclosed more details on the financial damage their previous podcast collaboration supposedly generated. As Kush detailed the effort and expenses she supposedly shelled out for Denise, she emphasized that airing her side of the story is an attempt to open the conversation about professionalism. “As a host, my questions and comments on the podcast were never meant to shame anyone but rather to open up the conversation on challenges in the creative industry,” she said. “I hope this discussion leads to more accountability and professionalism. My focus is to continue sparking meaningful conversations and challenging minds,” she pointed out, noting that she doesn’t want to drop more screenshots. After her statement, Denise took to X (formerly Twitter) to warn Kush about pursuing legal action, as she described the latter’s statements as a “twisted narrative.” “Hope you can back up all that when I see you in court,” Denise warned. “‘Check her stories’ and it’s all twisted narrative as usual with business that was between her and a label team; receipts are just her trash-talking behind me and my best friend.” Denise alleged instances of unprofessionalism on Kush’s part, including late payments for talent fees, exploitative use of her name and image for promotional purposes, and even inappropriate behavior during their initial encounters. The singer also shared a private conversation between her and Kush, stressing her intent to take the issue to court. “Lols. Biglang bait,” she captioned the screenshot. BJ Pascual. Image: Instagram/@bjpascual BJ Pascual clarified parts of the screenshots earlier made public by Denise Julia, stressing that he does not want to escalate the issue but that he just wants to “provide transparency and accountability.” Pascual, who recently named the singer as the worst celebrity he worked with, responded to Denise’s tell-all about their canceled shoot by sharing screenshots as well of the parts of the conversation between them. “I appreciate Denise’s recent efforts to address the situation and the conversation we had in the hopes of moving forward,” he said via his Instagram Stories on Christmas Day. “However, some claims and portions of the images she shared on her IG stories do not reflect the full context of what transpired,” he noticed. One of the points Pascual raised is that his team was supposedly able to cut the cost of the shoot to accommodate the budget of the group of Denise. To support his statement, Pascual added a screenshot of the cost sheet his team sent to the singer’s manager. “Our team made every effort to adjust the budget down to 371K for the one-day shoot, which was below industry standards,” he said. “This was part of our effort to accommodate their budget and fit within their specific range, contrary to the original P1.2M amount that Denise shared in her IG story. A detail that was not fully addressed in her video,” he explained. Pascual noted that after giving Denise’s team the discounted cost, the latter told them that they were “not ready” due to their glam team canceling on them. He said they had managed to secure another glam team for the singer, but her team “still felt unprepared.” “My intention in sharing the context is not to escalate the matter but to provide transparency and accountability... I hope this brings clarity and closure to the matter, allowing us to move forward constructively,” he said. “I have already responded personally to Denise yesterday, acknowledging her message and expressing my openness to resolving this further in person.” Denise Julia and BJ Pascual. Image: Instagram/@denisejvlia, @bjpascual After disclosing their private conversations regarding their canceled shoot, Denise Julia and BJ Pascual appear to be heading to a legal battle. This will apparently be the case as the singer expressed intent to file a defamation suit against the photographer, as per her statement on her X page on Christmas Day. Her post—which includes a screen recording of their managers’ full conversation—came after Pascual made clarifications and shared more images of their teams’ conversation to provide “full context.” “We went into this wanting to work with you—we’re genuine fans and were so excited about the collaboration,” she said. “From the very beginning, we were upfront about our budget and what we can afford to execute the music video, the photo shoot, the album art, the trailer and press photos,” she stressed. “I had moved my entire release date just to be able to work with you, out of respect for your time. I’ve stayed quiet for as long as I could, but I needed to say my piece,” she continued. Denise reiterated that her manager tried to make the negotiation between her and Pascual’s team work so that “no one’s effort goes to waste.” “You targeted me to bring me down,” Denise addressed Pascual. “I thought this was something we had agreed to talk about in person... We are now in contact with our legal team about a defamation suit. I hate that this had to go this way when it didn’t have to.” Pascual has yet to comment, as of press time. MJ Lastimosa at the media conference and red carpet premiere of “Strange Frequencies: Taiwan Killer Hospital” on Thursday, Dec. 19. | Image: INQUIRER.net/Jessica Ann Evangelista MJ Lastimosa was in disbelief after learning that her name was dragged into an “infidelity” scandal involving influencer Small Laude’s husband entrepreneur Philip Laude. During the media con and red carpet premiere of “Strange Frequencies: Taiwan Killer Hospital” last Dec. 19, Lastimosa was asked if she was aware that her name was recently mentioned in the viral screenshots involving the intimate exchanges between Philip and her alleged mistress. In the now-deleted screenshots, Philip was supposedly assuring a woman named Precious Mae Larra that she shouldn’t get jealous of a woman named “MJ” because they were not an item, at the same time trying to “belittle” MJ’s traits. “Pinagselosan ako? Saan? Hindi ako aware,” she said as reporters filled her in with the information. “Ang first and last encounter ko with them [Laudes] was in L.A. Nung na-invite ako sa mansion nila. After that, wala naman nangyari. Bakit ako?” she asked. “Nakilala ko si Ma’am Small and Sir Philip and the family. Lahat sila. Pumasok kami tapos kumakain na sila. Ayun lang. Hi, hello. Mga one hour. That was it. Paano ako nadamay dyan?” Lastimosa wondered with amusement. Lastimosa was in utter confusion as reporters filled her in with more details about the issue. “Pero ako ba talaga? Eh, hindi naman kami magkakilala. Sure ba kayong ako ‘yon?” she queried. “Mamaya naman... or baka kasi may mga relationship din na mga selosa lang talaga ‘yung partner. Pero hindi nya naman partner ‘yun, di ba?” she remarked. Lastimosa was also asked for her reaction, knowing that Philip allegedly “downgraded” her appearance. “Grabe. I love being maitim. Hindi ko sya kinakahiya. Nagbe-beach nga ako para umitim pa lalo,” she said. “[Pero] sa pageantry, usong uso naman ‘yang laitan. Parang wala na sa ‘kin ‘yan.” “Basta ako, naniniwala akong maganda ako. Basta pagtingin mo sa salamin, confident ka, okay na po ‘yon,” she maintained. Lastimosa said she would look for the screenshots to see them for herself. Meanwhile, Philip and Small Laude have remained quiet about the allegations. Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni. Image: Scott A Garfitt, Evan Agostini/Invision/AP, File Blake Lively has accused her “It Ends With Us” director and co-star Justin Baldoni of sexual harassment on the set of the movie and a subsequent effort to “destroy” her reputation in a legal complaint. The complaint obtained by The Associated Press, which The New York Times reported was filed on Dec. 20 with the California Civil Rights Department, precedes a lawsuit. It names Baldoni, the studio behind the romantic drama “It Ends With Us,” and Baldoni’s publicists among the defendants. In the complaint, Lively accuses Baldoni and the studio of embarking on a “multi-tiered plan” to damage her reputation. This alleged plot followed a meeting in which she and her husband Ryan Reynolds addressed “repeated sexual harassment and other disturbing behavior” by Baldoni and a producer on the movie. The scheme, the complaint said, included a proposal to plant theories on online message boards, engineer a social media campaign, and place news stories critical of Lively. Baldoni enlisted publicists and crisis managers in a “sophisticated, coordinated and well-financed retaliation plan” meant to “bury” and “destroy” Lively if she went public with her on-set concerns, the complaint alleges. “To safeguard against the risk of Ms. Lively ever revealing the truth about Mr. Baldoni, the Baldoni-Wayfarer team created, planted, amplified and boosted content designed to eviscerate Ms. Lively’s credibility,” the complaint states. “They engaged in the same techniques to bolster Mr. Baldoni’s credibility and suppress any negative content about him,” the document reads. The complaint also says Baldoni “abruptly pivoted away from” the movie’s marketing plan and “used domestic violence ‘survivor content’ to protect his public image.” Bryan Freedman, an attorney representing Baldoni, Wayfarer Studios and its representatives, called the claims “completely false, outrageous and intentionally salacious.” He pushed back against Lively’s allegations of a coordinated campaign, saying the studio “proactively” hired a crisis manager “due to the multiple demands and threats made by Ms. Lively during production.” Freedman also said Lively threatened to not appear on set and not to promote the film “if her demands were not met.” Those demands were not specified in the statement, but Lively’s complaint lists 30 demands that she said Baldoni and others agreed to after their tense sit-down over her hostile work environment concerns. “It Ends With Us,” an adaptation of Colleen Hoover’s bestselling 2016 novel, was released in August, exceeding box office expectations with a $50 million debut. But the movie’s release was shrouded by speculation over a discord between the lead pair. Subscribe to our daily newsletter By providing an email address. One of the most notable moments of the day came when Ronnie O'Sullivan, widely regarded as one of the greatest snooker players of all time, was forced to withdraw from the tournament. The Chinese players' strong performance in the early rounds had put pressure on O'Sullivan, and ultimately led to his surprising exit from the competition.India’s post-1991 manufacturing boom brought about key changes including end to licence Raj, reduction of trade barriers, and transformation of financial system In recent years, industrial policy has regained prominence as nations seek to strike a delicate balance between government intervention and market autonomy. India, like many other countries, faces the challenge of crafting a modern industrial policy that can drive sustained economic growth and position the nation as a global manufacturing powerhouse. Industrial policy must maintain a delicate balance between excessive control and complete disengagement. Overextending government intervention can distort markets, suppress competition, and create inefficiencies, weighing the economy down with bureaucratic red tape. Conversely, an overly hands-off approach risks neglecting key market failures, such as negative externalities and inadequate provision of public goods, which could destabilise the economic landscape. The real challenge lies in designing a regulatory framework that offers sufficient guidance to address these failures and allocate resources effectively without stifling the innovation and dynamism essential for sustainable economic growth. The global economy is experiencing a surge in activist industrial policies, whose broader benefits—beyond enriching company owners—are questionable. A notable example is the current emphasis on subsidy-driven government support for chip manufacturing, motivated by geopolitical concerns. This approach risks causing global overcapacity, suppressing international prices, and triggering reactive protectionist measures. Such outcomes could ultimately inflate costs for chip-utilising industries in the very nations implementing these policies. Indeed, the prevalence of distortive industrial policies worldwide has risen dramatically, from a few hundred in 2017 to over 2,000 in 2023, including around 100 in India. India has a longstanding tradition of activist industrial policy. A prominent example is the Make in India initiative, launched in 2014. Since its inception, various sector-specific measures have been implemented. The predominant form of corporate subsidies has been revenue forgone, amounting to Rs 1.09 trillion in 2022–23, representing 13% of corporate tax revenue. More recently, direct subsidies have been extended to industries like chip manufacturing under the production-linked incentive scheme. However, manufacturing growth under the Make in India programme has been underwhelming. During its tenure (2014–15 to 2023–24), the share of manufacturing in total gross value added declined from 16–17% in the first five years to 14–15% in the latter half. This sector- and company-focused approach has failed to accelerate industrial growth. India’s industrial policy should prioritise being market-friendly rather than business-friendly, as the latter often fosters crony capitalism. India’s post-1991 manufacturing boom stemmed more from market-friendly reforms than targeted interventions. Key changes included dismantling industrial licensing, reducing trade barriers, and transforming the financial system. These reforms spurred private investment and elevated India’s stature in global trade and finance. The liberalisation of financial markets played a transformative role, particularly through the introduction of private players in banking and mutual funds. This significantly enhanced the quality of services for savers and investors. Dematerialisation simplified share trading, broadening the base of retail investors. Additionally, shifting regulatory oversight from the Controller of Capital Issues to the Securities and Exchange Board of India established a more robust regulatory framework. These changes drove private corporate growth, evident in the surge of new capital issues and the expansion of mutual fund assets. Innovations like non-banking financial companies and fintech have further democratised access to credit, particularly for smaller borrowers. In 2022–23, private enterprises accounted for 71% of manufacturing investments, while small enterprises and the public sector contributed 22% and 7%, respectively. The reforms are also reflected in the sharp increase in the market capitalisation of shares as a percentage of GDP, rising from an average of 37% (1991–2005) to 85% (2005–2024). Decisions on sectoral focus and technology adoption should rest with investing corporations rather than being influenced by government intervention. A reduction in protectionist measures, including tariffs that remain high compared to other emerging market economies (EMDEs) is essential. Returning to the average EMDE tariff level could foster competitiveness and openness. Beyond supporting competitive markets, the government must address systemic issues like land acquisition, which remains a significant bottleneck. Complex ownership structures and cumbersome legal processes hinder industrial land access. A more efficient approach would involve the government acquiring land and offering it to investors as a ready package. Long-term government support for industrial development should focus on areas such as research and development, education, and skill development. Tamil Nadu serves as a model of success, excelling in land acquisition, labour availability, and infrastructure, which have attracted foreign-controlled corporations. The new industrial policy should emerge as a collaborative effort between the Union and state governments. The Union should focus on developing infrastructure, fostering competitive markets, overseeing financial systems to ensure efficiency and integrity, opening global trade channels for manufacturing, and supporting long-term technological advancements. States, on the other hand, should streamline land acquisition processes, ensure the availability of skilled labour, and simplify compliance with environmental and industrial standards. Monki is set to implement drastic changes to its UK stores - and in some cases, close the shutters entirely. The company describes itself as the 'antidote to boredom' with its collections 'guided by contemporary youth culture' to 're-imagine young femininity'. But it will soon merge with another H&M brand in five locations whose name 'WeekDay' may not scream so much 'antidote to boredom' - as well as see two of its stores close for good. This comes as Monki recently put up signs at its store in the Arndale Shopping Centre, Manchester, announcing a closure date of January 12. An H&M spokesman had said: 'A limited number of Monki stores are intended to be transformed into multi-brand Weekday destinations, while the others are intended to be closed. 'The newly formed Weekday multi-brand destination will cater to customers’ high aesthetic standards while embracing their multitude of unique expressions.' Despite the change being described as affecting a 'limiting' number of stores, it will impact five of the total seven, with the future of each remaining uncertain while the other two close. The brand has stores on London 's Carnaby Street (pictured) and Manchester's Arndale Centre Monki, which targets younger shoppers, will close the seven stores it has across the UK Beyond the Manchester branch, Monki's Newcastle upon Tyne branch in Eldon Square will say its goodbyes on January 2. It also said sales at the start of the third quarter this year were slow due to colder-than-usual weather while they picked up slightly in July and August. High street retailers as a whole have suffered their worst sales performance since the pandemic as pre-Christmas discounts failed to encourage spending, a report found earlier this month. Sales fell 5.8 per cent in November compared to last year amid continuing cost-of-living pressures and 'wider economic anxiety', according to accountancy firm BDO. The end result included online sales falling 7.8 per cent while in-store sales dropped 5.5 per cent - resulting in the worst total since the middle of lockdown in January 2021. Retail experts lamented the 'disastrous' figures for the UK's industry despite heavy discounts throughout November and 'hype' around Black Friday and Cyber Monday. The fashion sector performed particularly poorly in the High Street Sales Tracker with sales down 8 per cent year-on-year as consumers cut back on clothes spending. This year's overall sales fall also followed a 0.3 per cent decline in November 2023.
