Lacson made this statement in response to reports on the activity of Bulkang Kanlaon and the monitored forecasts on the intertropical convergence zone and rain showers affecting most parts of the country. “We have instructed our employees in the field to immediately activate our Operation Centers in the areas affected by floods, typhoons, and other emergencies and to open their hotlines to fast-track coordination with our relief institutions. “We are in the holiday season now, but our office is always open to address the needs of our fellow citizens. Included in our service is the readiness to respond at any time of need,” he said. NFA has intensified its palay buying strategies under the Price Range Scheme to meet the rice relief requests of the Department of Social Welfare and Development, the Local Government Units and the Legislators for distribution to the affected families and individuals in calamity stricken areas. The agency has accomplished 95 percent of its buffer stocking target this year. The current buffer stock is now 5.661 million bags of equivalent milled rice. Lacson issued a standing order to its ranks to closely and continuously coordinate with the local farmers and the chief executives in their area for immediate response.

LANDOVER, Md. (AP) — Austin Seibert choked back tears taking responsibility for missing the extra point that would have tied the score in the final minute. Jeremy Reaves choked back tears blaming himself for a missed assignment that led to a kickoff return touchdown. And John Bates choked back tears talking about moving forward from his costly fumble. All of those late mistakes contributed to the Washington Commanders' third consecutive loss , 34-26 to the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday in a game that was wholly unremarkable until fourth quarter chaos. The teams combined to score 31 points in the final four minutes, the most in an NFL game in more than a decade, and the Commanders (7-5) came out on the wrong end of it in a defeat that further endangers their playoff chances. “Any time you lose a game or you lose a game in that type of fashion, it’s very difficult and it’s tough, but it never comes down to one play,” rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels said. “There’s plays throughout the game where little things add up to big things.” There were a lot of little things. After Bates fumbled, the Cowboys (4-7) took an 11-point lead and the Commanders made a 2-point conversion to cut the deficit to three, Dallas' KaVonte Turpin returned the ensuing kickoff 99 yards for a touchdown. “I didn’t make the play when it was there to make, and it cost us,” said Reaves, one of the league’s top special teams players and the All-Pro pick for that two seasons ago. “No excuse, man. I’ve made that play 100 times, and I didn’t make it today and it cost us the game. It’s unacceptable. It’s solely on me. It’s going to sting for a while. It’s going to hurt.” After Seibert made a 51-yard field goal, Daniels connected with Terry McLaurin on an 86-yard TD that made it 27-26 with 21 seconds left. Coach Dan Quinn said no thought was given to going for 2 in that situation. Seibert, who missed the past two games with a right hip injury, was wide left on the point-after attempt. “I just wasn’t striking it well,” said Seibert, who added he felt fine and did not blame a low snap for his miss. "It didn’t make a difference at all. It was on me.” Juanyeh Thomas returned the onside kick immediately after 43 yards for a touchdown to put Dallas up eight with 14 seconds left. The 31 combined points are the second most in a game since at least 2000, behind only Minnesota and Baltimore's 36 in their game Dec. 8, 2013. Cowboys-Commanders was the first game in the Super Bowl era to have two missed extra points, two kickoff return touchdowns and a blocked punt. “We got down to the end there and it was a game-situational extravaganza,” Dallas coach Mike McCarthy said. “It was like Yahtzee. Everything was in there." While Washington's skid continued, the Cowboys ended their losing streak at five thanks to strong play from QB Cooper Rush, a defense that forced two turnovers and, of course, special teams success. Rush was 24 of 32 for 247 yards and TD passes to Jalen Tolbert and Luke Schoonmaker. “Lot of games left,” Rush said. “We’re sitting at 4-7. This is why you play them.” The Commanders have some soul-searching to do after losing as a 10 1/2-point favorite in the meeting of NFC East rivals and doing so in a way that left players so emotional. “The crazy games, I know they feel a little bit better whenever you win them,” punter and holder Tress Way said. “But that’s a tough pill to swallow.” Cowboys: LG Tyler Smith was inactive with ankle and knee injuries. ... RG Zack Martin (ankle), CB Trevon Diggs (groin/knee) and TE Jake Ferguson (concussion) were ruled out prior to game day and did not travel for the game. Commanders: RB Austin Ekeler was concussed on a kickoff return in the final seconds and taken to a hospital for further evaluation. ... RB Brian Robinson Jr. left with an ankle injury in the first half, returned and then left again. ... RT Andrew Wylie was concussed in the third quarter and did not return. ... C Tyler Biadasz was evaluated for a concussion in the fourth. ... CB Marshon Lattimore (hamstring) missed a third consecutive game since being acquired at the trade deadline from New Orleans. Cowboys: Host the New York Giants on Thursday in the traditional Thanksgiving Day game in Dallas. Commanders: Host the Tennessee Titans next Sunday in Washington’s final game before its late bye week. Pakistan has taken several measures to modernize its armed forces, especially the Pakistan Air Force (PAF), which will soon boast a fleet of the latest 5th generation J-35 stealth fighter jets, acquired from China. Updated: December 29, 2024 1:02 AM IST By : Pakistan is rapidly advancing its military capabilities in its attempt to outgun India in case of another showdown between the two bitter rivals. In recent years, Pakistan has taken several measures to modernize its armed forces, especially the Pakistan Air Force (PAF), which will soon boast a fleet of the latest 5th generation J-35 stealth fighter jets, acquired from China. Reports say that the PAF has inked a deal to acquire 40 J-35 fighter jets, which will be delivered within the next two years. The deal was set in motion in January 2024, when PAF chief Air Chief Marshal Zaheer Ahmed Baber Sidhu had stated that the “foundation for acquiring the J-31 stealth fighter aircraft has already been laid”, and the Chinese-made stealth fighter would join the PAF fleet “in the near future”. Pakistan will have edge over India for over a decade Experts believe Pakistan’s acquisition of the J-35 warplane would give it superiority over the Indian Air Force (IAF) in terms of firepower and aerial supremacy, giving Islamabad a strategic edge over New Delhi over the next decade or more. According to Zia ul Haq Shamsi, a retired PAF officer, the deployment of J-35 fighters can give Pakistan an edge over India for the next 12-14 years. However, some experts consider this period to be limited to around 7-8 years. Let us find out about the capabilities and features of the J-35 stealth fighter jet. Squadron Leader Vijainder K. Thakur (retd), an IAF veteran and military expert, notes that PAF’s acquisition of the J-35 will provide a significant boost to its offensive capabilities, and combined with F-16 and J-10C, the J-35’s land-attack variant would provide Pakistan an edge over India, according to the Eurasian Times. Brendan Mulvaney, the Director at US Air Force’s China Aerospace Studies Institute believes that Pakistan’s move reflects a shift away from Western countries and towards China. However, he asserted that the J-35 effectiveness will also depend on the weapons, sensors and C4ISR (command, control, communications, computers, intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance) provided by China. India’s push for indigenous 5th gen fighter jets Meanwhile, experts believe that India is at least a decade away from acquiring a 5th-gen stealth combat jet, with its AMCA, unlikely to be inducted in the IAF before 2034. According to the 2024-25 report of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Defence, deliveries of India’s indigenous Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) fifth-generation fighter jets are expected to start in the next decade. But the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) is facing several technical and timeline-related challenges which could push the project timeline further back. Currently, only three nations have operational fifth-generation fighters — US, Russia, and China, so realistically, acquiring the Su-57 Felon or the F-35 Lightning II fighter jet from Russia or United States, are the only two options for India to acquire a 5th-gen aircraft. But, so far, the US has not explicitly stated that it would be open to selling the F-35 to India, because India buys a large amount armaments from Russia, including the S-400 air defense system. How Pakistan is building air superiority despite failing economy? Pakistan is facing a severe financial crisis, heavy debt, and its economy is crumbling, yet the country is rapidly expanding its military prowess, spending frantically on acquiring the latest military technology. According to a World Bank report, Pakistan owes $29 billion to China, and $9.16 billion to Saudi Arabia, with Beijing having a 22% share in Islamabad’s total foreign debt. Experts believe that China, the world’s second largest economy, with a $18.7 trillion GDP, is the reason why Pakistan is able to rapidly build its military power, despite its economy being under severe stress. Beijing and Islamabad share deep military ties, and have often referred to each other as “all-weather allies”, and China is helping to modernize all three wings of Pakistan’s armed forces, especially the Pakistan Air Force. India and Pakistan have been engaged in a race to stay ahead of each other in combat aircraft since the 1950s when the two rival nations started building their air power. J-35 features, capabilities The Shenyang J-35 is a 5th generation, twin-engine stealth multirole combat aircraft manufactured by Shenyang Aircraft Corporation (SAC), designed for air superiority and surface strike missions. The J-35 comes in two variants, a land-based variant for the Chinese Army, and a carrier-based variant optimized for catapult-assisted takeoff (CATOBAR) for the Navy. The stealth fighter was unveiled during the Zhuhai Air Show in November this year, and is reportedly a more advanced and “production-ready” iteration of the earlier FC-31 model. Experts say that compared to the the FC-31 or J-31, the J-35 is powered by more powerful WS-19 engines, features a more sophisticated radar system, and improved sensor fusion. The aircraft boasts other advanced features, including improved aerodynamics and stealth capabilities, and a wider range of weapons. Notably, China’s 5th-gen combat plane bears striking similarities with the US-made F-35 Lightning II. For breaking news and live news updates, like us on or follow us on and . Research is underway to find out what is holding back female participation in local councils, with recommendations to correct gender imbalance expected next year. Only 27 per cent of candidates in this year’s local council elections were female, with just over a quarter (28%) of those candidates elected, said Equality junior minister Rebecca Buttigieg and Local Government junior minister Alison Zerafa Civelli on Saturday. There are currently six localities that do not have any female councillors at all, Buttigieg noted while stressing the importance of female perspectives in local council discussions. The research, which is being carried out by University of Malta Pro-Rector for Student and Staff Affairs and Outreach Carmen Sammut, follows a recommendation earlier this year from a technical committee that evaluated candidacy in the local council elections. Sammut said the parliamentary gender corrective mechanism first seen in the general election two years ago could not necessarily be carried across to local council elections, with her research intended to find other methods of ensuring gender parity. Civelli said Sammut’s research – which is due to be concluded by next September – should be joined by “other activities that are encouraging the further increase of the visibility of women in political life”. Saturday’s press conference comes seven months after Equality Commissioner Renee Laiviera the government reform local councils to make them more gender inclusive. Speaking in April, Laiviera said: “Our biggest challenge is not that people don’t vote for female candidates but a lack of female candidates”. And while last May the government the idea of introducing a gender corrective mechanism for local councils as part of its 'National Strategic Vision for Local Governments', the change was not introduced in time for this year’s elections. Although more female councillors were this year than in 2019, the number of female mayors dropped by half, with only seven of Malta’s 68 local councils now led by a female mayor. Only Birkirkara, Għargħur, Mqabba, Santa Luċija, Xewkija, Żejtun and Żurrieq have a woman at the helm. You can unsubscribe at any time by clicking the link in the footer of our emails. The Managing Director of the Nigeria Export Processing Zones Authority, Dr Olufemi Ogunyemi, has said the Lekki Textile and Garment Special Economic Zone project located in the Eyin-Osa area of Epe, Lagos State, will generate 5,000 direct and over 20,000 indirect jobs when operational. Ogunyemi made the remarks while disbursing cash compensation to the seven Eyin-Osa families that contributed the 240.09 acres of land for the Federal Government project. A statement issued by the NEPZA Head, Corporate Communications, Martins Odeh, disclosed this on Sunday in Abuja. The MD, represented by Mrs. Chika Ibekwe, Director of Zone Operations, said that the community would be continually regenerated, adding that the benefits that would accrue from the gestures would spill over to several generations. The beneficiaries included families of Olayinka Salami, Aderenle village, Muhammed Balogun, Bashorun Seidu, Iyanda, Matanmi Mobolaji, as well as the Agara Onileyan respectively. “The space will generate 5,000 direct and over 20,000 indirect jobs for the country, just as it will serve the export markets of the South-West region. “There are many benefits to gain from the SEZ, including employment generation, especially to the local community, the opportunity for backward linkage, improvement of infrastructure network around the project, and others too numerous to mention now,” he said. Ogunyemi further said that the development was in line with the goals and objectives of the Federal Government’s Economic Recovery and Growth Plan. He, however, stated that the current administration of President Bola Tinubu is not just interested in attracting Foreign Direct Investments through the Free Trade Zone Scheme but was also interested in the development of all the host communities. “This exercise is to commence the application of the Authority’s new concept of Community Social Regeneration in order to open a new chapter of cooperation and mutual understanding to foster unhindered progress of the free trade operations across the country. Related News Kaduna community requests military base to combat banditry FG targets N8.7tn revenue from Customs Rivers will receive federal allocation despite legal battle – FG “NEPZA has since re-aligned its mandate with the administration’s economic policy to deliver the Renewed Hope Agenda of the president. “NEPZA will not shy away from leading the country on the path of economic growth. The Lekki Textile and Garments SEZ project is already attracting investment interest to this remote area of Lagos.,” Ogunyemi said. Ogunyemi also explained that the Federal Government had taken steps to replicate the economic scheme across the six geopolitical zones, adding that more states should leverage the speedy development potentials of the scheme. According to him, the Lekki Textiles and Garment SEZ will also serve as hubs for Information and Communication Technology, Agro-industries, as well as world-class sports and community development centres. On his part, the president of Eyin-Osa United Kingdom Development Association, Muftau Shittu, the umbrella association for the host community, said that the area had been occupied by their forefathers for over 500 years. He said that at the beginning, the enclaves and villages that constituted the community had lived in peace practising economic activities such as farming, hunting, fishing, brewing of hot drinks and timber lumbering. Shittu however, said that trouble started in mid-year 2003 when groups of land grabbers started claiming ownership of Eyin-Osa lands from the original and rightful owners. According to him, in May 2008, without due diligent information, the lands were expropriated to the Lekki Free Trade Zone, and the journey for adequate compensation with the Lagos State Government began. “We are delighted today for this humane approach of the federal government through NEPZA. The community can only imagine these good gestures as most of the earliest promises were not kept. We now have NEPZA management and government that are serious about regenerating the Eyin-Osa land. “We are happy to cede the total of 240.09 acres to NEPZA for the economic emancipation of our land. We pray that this cooperation and the steps to regenerate our people become permanent,” he added.Seahawks try for 7th straight win in series vs. Cards in crucial NFC West matchup
