Abortions are up in the US. It's a complicated picture as women turn to pills, travelTEL AVIV: Zionist Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu arrived in court in Tel Aviv on Tuesday to testify for the first time in his corruption case. Netanyahu, who has repeatedly sought to delay his appearance in court, is the first Zionist sitting prime minister to face a criminal trial. He faces charges of bribery, fraud and breach of public trust in three separate cases. At Tuesday's hearing, the premier is expected to take the witness stand for the first time, responding to the allegations and testimonies made against him, including from former close aides. Several people, including anti-Netanyahu protesters and his supporters, gathered outside the court, while some right-wing lawmakers attended the session, which was held in an underground chamber for security reasons. An AFP journalist outside the court reported that the prime minister's supporters chanted "Netanyahu, the people support you", while protesters who have been rallying against him for months chanted "Bibi to prison". "I will speak in court. I am not running away," Netanyahu said at a press conference Monday evening. "It has been eight years that I have waited for this day, eight years of wanting to present the truth, eight years waiting to completely demolish these absurd and baseless accusations against me," he said, labeling it a "relentless witch hunt". Luxury goods The trial, which has been delayed many times since it first began in May 2020, is scheduled to last for several months, with an appeals process that could further prolong matters. Netanyahu, who filed multiple requests to delay the proceedings on the basis of the wars in Gaza and Lebanon, denies any wrongdoing. In the first case, Netanyahu and his wife, Sara, are accused of accepting more than $260,000 worth of luxury goods such as cigars, jewelry and champagne from billionaires in exchange for political favors. Among the alleged benefactors are Hollywood producer Arnon Milchan and Australian business executive James Packer. The other two cases allege that Netanyahu attempted to negotiate more favourable coverage in two Zionist media outlets. One involves alleged attempts by the prime minister to reach a deal with Arnon Mozes, publisher of the popular daily Yedioth Ahronoth, for better coverage by agreeing to weaken the status of a rival daily newspaper. The other alleges that Netanyahu received favorable coverage on the popular news website Walla, owned by his close friend Shaul Elovitch, in exchange for smoothing the way for a telecoms merger sought by Elovitch. Since returning to power in late 2022, Netanyahu's coalition government has clashed with the country's judiciary and law enforcement officials and sparked mass protests by trying to advance legislation that would weaken the courts. Netanyahu's critics insist the legal cases, and the hearings that have taken place so far, will finally serve justice to a highly corrupt politician who will do anything to stay in power. They also accuse him of intentionally prolonging the 14-month conflicts in Gaza and Lebanon to evade justice. 'Important milestone' Yohanan Plesner, president of the Democracy Institute, told AFP that the lengthy and divisive trial had now reached "an important milestone". Netanyahu, he said, not only faced a conflict of interest being both prime minister and a criminal defendant, but the trial was "putting him in direct confrontation with important institutions in the state, especially the Justice Ministry". He added that being in such a public setting would likely put Netanyahu outside of his comfort zone. A leader who wields maximum control over his public image, responding to tough questions from prosecutors could pose a serious challenge for him. On Monday, around a dozen ministers in Netanyahu's coalition sent a letter to Attorney General Gali Baharav-Miara requesting that the trial be postponed in light of events in Syria and the overall security situation. The letter followed similar calls by ministers and requests from the prime minister's legal team to postpone his testimony because of wars and his busy schedule. The prosecution has argued that it is in the public interest for the trial to conclude as quickly as possible and the court has denied all such petitions, although it has agreed to begin trial days slightly later and occasionally reduce the hearings from three to two days a week due to the prime minister's work. Other Zionist leaders have been convicted in criminal cases, including former prime minister Ehud Olmert who resigned before his trial began, but Netanyahu is the first to take the stand as a sitting prime minister. - AFP

Chance of direct attack by Russia ‘remote’, says UK armed forces chiefOn Monday, the CSIRO released as well as a According to the CSIRO’s analysis, producing power from a conventional, large-scale reactors would cost between one and half and two and half times more than from a 90% renewables system backed up by batteries and gas. Unfortunately, the CSIRO’s costing for nuclear power was not a particularly comprehensive one. It doesn’t adequately take account of the complexity involved in nuclear power plant construction and high risk of budget cost blow-outs with this technology. The CSIRO’s Gencost publication assumes the cost of building a nuclear reactor in 2030 will be around $8.5 billion for a one gigawatt unit. Yet the experience from r across Europe and the United States indicates the lower bound cost is $14.9 billion and the upper end is $27.5 billion. The nature of the CSIRO’s Gencost publication is that it needs to provide single point estimates for the cost of constructing different power generation technologies which only allows for slightly varying levels of technological progress over time. It isn’t intended to capture the varying risk of construction cost blow outs across technologies. However, this is a major problem with nuclear that would be reckless to ignore. As I’ve touched upon previously, Oxford University’s professor Bent Flyvberg has built up a large database on the track record of major construction projects across the globe in managing to achieve their planned budgets and time-frames. That nuclear projects are characterised by extremely high risk of construction cost blow-outs, with budgets typically blowing out by 120%. Solar and wind projects by contrast have some of the lowest risks of budget cost blow-outs. CSIRO’s costing also accepted the nuclear industry’s claim that they can realise a more than halving in their costs relative to recent experience through what they term “Nth of a kind” efficiencies. The “Nth of a kind” costing is based on a theory that the nuclear industry will be able to dramatically reduce their costs as they build more of given type of reactor until they reach the Nth number. Exactly what number N might be however is usually left rather rubbery. While learning by doing cost reductions have been proven to unfold in renewable energy and batteries, in as occurred. Instead costs for nuclear over time as the industry has been required to make modifications to address vulnerabilities in reactor safety. In the last few months we obtained a concrete example of why CSIRO’s costing is unrealistic for the Australian context. The CSIRO have indicated that they based their capital costs on Korean experience, which is the only developed country that has had much success in building nuclear on time and budget. However, in a tender held by the Czechia Government this year, Korean Hydro and Nuclear Power offered to build two reactors not the $8.5 billion CSIRO estimates. These would be built on the site of a pre-existing nuclear power plant with all the pre-existing infrastructure and cost savings that provides. No doubt the Liberal-National Coalition will dismiss all of this by pointing to a range of nuclear “experts” to claim nuclear will deliver us lower costs. Maybe they’ll be right and the nuclear industry will finally get their act together to deliver projects on time and on budget. But here’s the ultimate test – are those experts prepared to sink their own money into the project rather than Australian taxpayers? If nuclear technology is so cost effective then why can’t Electricite De France (owned by the French Government); or Westinghouse (owned by overseas pension holders via Brookfield), or Korean Hydro and Nuclear Power (majority owned by the Korean Government) stump up their own cash to build reactors around the country? Why should Australian taxpayers be required to take on this risk? In reality Peter Dutton and Ted O’Brien don’t actually need to get involved in evaluating power generation technologies in which they have no qualifications or experience. Instead, if they are genuinely committed to achieving net zero emissions why not convert this into a legislated requirement for electricity generators to achieve a steadily reducing cap on carbon emissions over time. They can then overturn the ban on nuclear power and leave it up to people with vastly more power sector experience than them to work out which technology is cheapest. Back in 2006, the Howard Government-commissioned Switkowski nuclear inquiry came to precisely this conclusion. In response the Howard Government reluctantly agreed that they were right. Almost twenty years later one is left wondering why is it now so hard for the Coalition to back their emissions target with legislation and put their faith in the private sector to deliver?
1 2 Bhubaneswar: A growing number of city residents are opting for house parties and farmhouse retreats on New Year's eve instead of the usual lavish celebrations at hotels, restaurants and pubs. Many said they prefer the relaxed vibe of being surrounded by family and close friends, free from the stress of deadlines and expensive food and drinks, as the perfect way to welcome 2025. Smaranika Mishra, a homemaker, said, "New Year parties have become crowded and commercial. Parties in big hotels no longer care about people's safety, where you find strangers, loud music and so much crowd. I would rather spend my New Year's Eve with family and friends in a safe atmosphere, preferably amid nature, far from the madding crowd." Away from the hustle and bustle, several farmhouses on the outskirts of Bhubaneswar, Cuttack, Puri and Konark have become a first choice for revellers to organise family get-togethers. "We booked the last weekend of Dec at a farmhouse where five families will spend quality time. The venue has a serene atmosphere with gardens and a bonfire, and children can go fishing, visit the sunset point, and have local and traditional food and farm-fresh vegetables. It will provide a much-needed break from city life," said Pinky Patnaik, a govt employee. The shift from hotels to farmhouses reflects a desire for meaningful connections and a more relaxed atmosphere as people prioritise spending time with loved ones. Apart from the calm and serene atmosphere, farmhouses offer cottages and double rooms for night stays, bonfires, games, fishing, music/karaoke and local and traditional cuisine. For one person, including three major meals and other facilities like a night stay, the cost is between Rs 2,500 and Rs 3,500, while some farmhouses charge between Rs 9,000 and Rs 15,000 per day. There are around 50 such farmhouses available for rent for the year-end. Owner of a farmhouse near Chandaka said, "Guests want a quieter New Year amid nature, in a peaceful atmosphere, away from the noise in hotels with extravagant shows. The pandemic taught people to value close-knit gatherings, and this trend seems to be continuing. We are fairly booked in Dec and Jan." Concern for the environment, ecology and taking a break from gadgets and technology is also bringing many to farmhouses. "I want my children and their friends to experience a rustic atmosphere, away from gadgets and technology. Parties generate so much waste. Family parties and farmhouses make them more responsible and personal."Winter storm warnings and advisories are in place across multiple states, with widespread high winds and freezing temperatures expected and forecasters predicting up to 40 inches of snow in some areas of Wyoming. Abortion has become slightly more common despite bans or deep restrictions in most Republican-controlled states, and the legal and political fights over its future are not over yet. It's now been two and a half years since the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade and opened the door for states to implement bans. The policies and their impact have been in flux ever since the ruling in Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization. Here's a look at data on where things stand: Overturning Roe and enforcing abortion bans has changed how woman obtain abortions in the U.S. But one thing it hasn't done is put a dent in the number of abortions being obtained. There have been slightly more monthly abortions across the country recently than there were in the months leading up to the June 2022 ruling, even as the number in states with bans dropped to near zero. “Abortion bans don’t actually prevent abortions from happening,” said Ushma Upadhyay, a public health social scientist at the University of California San Francisco. But, she said, they do change care. For women in some states, there are major obstacles to getting abortions — and advocates say that low-income, minority and immigrant women are least likely to be able to get them when they want. For those living in states with bans, the ways to access abortion are through travel or abortion pills. As the bans swept in, abortion pills became a bigger part of the equation. They were involved in about half the abortions before Dobbs. More recently, it’s been closer to two-thirds of them, according to research by the Guttmacher Institute. The uptick of that kind of abortion, usually involving a combination of two drugs, was underway before the ruling. But now, it's become more common for pill prescriptions to be made by telehealth. By the summer of 2024, about 1 in 10 abortions was via pills prescribed via telehealth to patients in states where abortion is banned. As a result, the pills are now at the center of battles over abortion access. This month, Texas sued a New York doctor for prescribing pills to a Texas woman via telemedicine. There's also an effort by Idaho, Kansas and Missouri to roll back their federal approvals and treat them as “controlled dangerous substances,” and a push for the federal government to start enforcing a 19th-century federal law to ban mailing them. Clinics have closed or halted abortions in states with bans. But a network of efforts to get women seeking abortions to places where they're legal has strengthened and travel for abortion is now common. The Guttmacher Institute found that more than twice as many Texas residents obtained abortion in 2023 in New Mexico as New Mexico residents did. And as many Texans received them in Kansas as Kansans. Abortion funds, which benefitted from “rage giving” in 2022, have helped pay the costs for many abortion-seekers. But some funds have had to cap how much they can give . Since the downfall of Roe, the actions of lawmakers and courts have kept shifting where abortion is legal and under what conditions. Here's where it stands now: Florida, the nation’s second most-populous state, began enforcing a ban on abortions after the first six weeks of pregnancy on May 1. That immediately changed the state from one that was a refuge for other Southerners seeking abortion to an exporter of people looking for them. There were about 30% fewer abortions there in May compared with the average for the first three months of the year. And in June, there were 35% fewer. While the ban is not unique, the impact is especially large. The average driving time from Florida to a facility in North Carolina where abortion is available for the first 12 weeks of pregnancy is more than nine hours, according to data maintained by Caitlin Myers, a Middlebury College economics professor. The bans have meant clinics closed or stopped offering abortions in some states. But some states where abortion remains legal until viability – generally considered to be sometime past 21 weeks of pregnancy , though there’s no fixed time for it – have seen clinics open and expand . Illinois, Kansas and New Mexico are among the states with new clinics. There were 799 publicly identifiable abortion providers in the U.S. in May 2022, the month before the Supreme Court reversed Roe v. Wade. And by this November, it was 792, according to a tally by Myers, who is collecting data on abortion providers. But Myers says some hospitals that always provided some abortions have begun advertising it. So they’re now in the count of clinics – even though they might provide few of them. How hospitals handle pregnancy complications , especially those that threaten the lives of the women, has emerged as a major issue since Roe was overturned. President Joe Biden's administration says hospitals must offer abortions when they're needed to prevent organ loss, hemorrhage or deadly infections, even in states with bans. Texas is challenging the administration’s policy and the U.S. Supreme Court this year declined to take it up after the Biden administration sued Idaho. More than 100 pregnant women seeking help in emergency rooms and were turned away or left unstable since 2022, The Associated Press found in an analysis of federal hospital investigative records. Among the complaints were a woman who miscarried in the lobby restroom of Texas emergency room after staff refused to see her and a woman who gave birth in a car after a North Carolina hospital couldn't offer an ultrasound. The baby later died. “It is increasingly less safe to be pregnant and seeking emergency care in an emergency department,” Dara Kass, an emergency medicine doctor and former U.S. Health and Human Services official told the AP earlier this year. Since Roe was overturned, there have been 18 reproductive rights-related statewide ballot questions. Abortion rights advocates have prevailed on 14 of them and lost on four. In the 2024 election , they amended the constitutions in five states to add the right to abortion. Such measures failed in three states: In Florida, where it required 60% support; in Nebraska, which had competing abortion ballot measures; and in South Dakota, where most national abortion rights groups did support the measure. AP VoteCast data found that more than three-fifths of voters in 2024 supported abortion being legal in all or most cases – a slight uptick from 2020. The support came even as voters supported Republicans to control the White House and both houses of Congress. Associated Press writers Linley Sanders, Amanda Seitz and Laura Ungar contributed to this article.

The Role of Setra Sensors, Honeywell Valves, and Voltage Converters in Modern TechnologyNEW DELHI: Meta remained its dominance in the global virtual reality (VR) market with a 65 per cent market share in Q3 2024, as Apple’s Vision Pro shipments doubled (on-quarter) following its international launch in China, Europe and APAC, according to a new report. Overall, global VR headset shipments fell 4 per cent (on-year) and 16 per cent (on-quarter) in Q3 2024, the market’s third consecutive quarter of declines, according to Counterpoint’s Global XR (AR/VR) Headset Model Tracker. The decrease was primarily due to a 50 per cent drop in the tethered VR headset segment during the quarter. In contrast, the standalone VR headset segment grew by 14 per cent YoY. Counterpoint expects international sales to account for nearly 90 per cent of Apple’s total shipments in H2 2024. “Apple is reportedly testing OLED displays made on conventional glass substrates for its lower-cost Vision headset. This display technology is likely more cost-effective than the Micro OLED displays used in the Vision Pro,” the report mentioned. Pico’s shipments dipped 2 per cent YoY but grew 6 per cent QoQ. Sony’s shipments fell 29 per cent YoY but more than doubled QoQ boosted by its PC adapter launch and promotional campaigns in North America and Europe. Despite the lacklustre XR market performance in Q3 2024, the period marked pivotal industry advancements. The report said that the debut of Meta’s Orion AR glasses and Snap’s Spectacles’ 24 AR glasses showcased the future potential of AR technologies. Leveraging advancements in generative AI technologies, traditional hardware giants, AR/VR OEMs, and internet companies are shifting their focus to the development of AR+AI smart glasses. “While the global VR market is likely to see only slight growth in the coming years, Counterpoint expects significant expansion in the global AR smart glasses market, the roper mentioned.
