188 jili Depending on your viewpoint, the Audi S6 e-tron is either moving with the times or having an identity crisis. You see, the latest – all-electric – S6 follows not only petrol versions but also diesels. One thing that hasn't changed is the S6's remit: to offer great performance in a practical body – in the S6 e-tron's case, a hatchback (Sportback) and an estate car (Avant). It looks pretty compelling on paper, with lots of power fed to all four wheels, a big battery to give you lots of range and adjustable air suspension to make it capable through corners. But does the first Audi S6 electric car have what it takes to go head to head with the quickest BMW i5 or the Porsche Taycan – two models which are also available as estate cars ? Read on to find out... Overview Performance & drive With a focus on performance, every Audi S6 e-tron comes with 496bhp and has the potential to sprint from 0-62mph in just 4.1 seconds – or 3.9 seconds if you use its launch-control setting. There’s no doubt that’s pretty quick, and you’re pushed reassuringly into your seat when you put your foot down, but it doesn’t feel as quick as the BMW i5 M60 xDrive or Porsche Taycan 4S . Indeed, both those rivals get off the line with even more vigour and will continue up to 62mph faster than the S6. Interestingly, the S6 Avant e-tron estate car covers the sprint in the exact same time as the sleeker Sportback, making it a match for the BMW i5 Touring M60 and much faster than the VW ID 7 Tourer GTX . It’s still slower than a Porsche Taycan 4S Sport Turismo though. With a 94.9kWh (usable) battery, the S6 e-tron will go further on a charge than all those electric car rivals . Indeed, with an official range of 402 miles, even the Taycan 4S Performance Battery Plus is no match. Every S6 e-tron comes with adaptive air suspension as standard and that does wonders for the way it drives. When you’re driving normally, it's firm enough to have great body control over undulating terrain but still manages to soak up potholes and imperfections with little fuss. In Dynamic mode, everything tightens up, with the suspension getting stiffer and the steering heavier. As a result, the S6 e-tron becomes pretty fun to drive, exhibiting very little body lean, having lots of grip thanks to its quattro all-wheel-drive system and with lots of feedback from the steering. All that really lets the side down is the brake pedal, which lacks the feel of rivals. Speaking of which, while the S6 e-tron is good to drive, the Porsche Taycan is on another level entirely, so if handling is at the top of your priority list, you’ll want to look at that rival instead. Outside of the brake pedal, which is fine for everyday driving, the S6 e-tron is quite refined, with little wind noise and about the same level of road noise as you'll hear in a BMW i5 . "As good as the Audi S6 e-tron is to drive, it’s hard to ignore that the Porsche Taycan 4S costs the same and is much better for performance and handling." – Dan Jones, Senior Reviewer Interior Taking a seat in the Audi S6 e-tron is a comfortable affair, with the driving position lining you up perfectly with the pedals and steering wheel. The Sports Plus seats giving you plenty of electrical adjustment, including lumbar support, and loads of side bolster to keep you in place in fast corners. As with the Audi A6 e-tron, you sit quite low within the S6 e-tron’s interior, and that doesn’t help when it comes to visibility, especially in the sleek Sportback (hatchback) version. You see, the sloping roofline compromises the view over your shoulder, while the letterbox rear window limits the amount that you can see out of the back. The Avant estate car is better, with large rear windows and a slightly larger back window, but the BMW i5 Touring is better still. At least you get plenty of parking aids to help make reversing easier, including front and rear parking sensors, a surround-view camera and a system that allows the car to park itself. Meanwhile, standard-fit matrix LED headlights ensure you’ll see plenty at night, allowing you to leave full beam on at all times without dazzling other drivers. Infotainment is displayed on a big 14.5in touchscreen within a large curved fascia that dominates the top of the dashboard and also includes an 11.9in digital driver's display. Both are high definition and really easy to read. The infotainment system itself is easy to navigate and responds to all your prods quickly. It’s just a shame that you won’t find any physical controls for the system, as you do in the BMW i5 , which gets a physical controller. As a result, the S6 e-tron's system is more distracting to use while you're driving. The only buttons you’ll find are touch-sensitive ones on the steering wheel, and while they’re handy for setting the cruise control , they’re also easy to operate accidentally. While interior quality in the regular Audi A6 e-tron is a little let down by some of the materials, that isn’t the case in the S6: every surface is covered with varied and quality-feeling materials. Sure, there are still some scratchy plastics, but they’re hidden out of the way in places you won't touch often. "I’d avoid the optional camera wing mirrors. The latest versions are better than the old ones but they’re still so frustrating and give you zero depth perception." – Dan Jones, Senior Reviewer Passenger & boot space Regardless of whether you go for the Audi S6 e-tron in Sportback or Avant form, you’ll find there’s plenty of space in the front, even if you’re six feet tall. Indeed, you’ll find that there’s head room to spare and more than enough shoulder room to stop you rubbing shoulders with your passenger. There’s an impressive amount of front storage, with both versions getting a couple of cupholders, decent-sized door bins, a space within the central armrest and a space under the centre console for a smartphone. Space in the rear isn’t quite as impressive, with both versions offering a decent amount of leg room but not all that much head room. Granted, the Avant estate car is better thanks to its higher roofline, but neither is as generous as the equivalent BMW i5 , with the Sportback’s sleek silhouette really eating into the head room. The boot space , meanwhile, is 502 litres whether you go for the hatchback or estate S6. That’s fairly impressive in the Sportback, beating the i5 and the Porsche Taycan but means that the S6 Avant e-tron’s boot is around 70 litres smaller than the one in the BMW i5 Touring . Either way, you won’t struggle to fit your family’s holiday luggage or a big load of shopping back there. What’s more, the S6 e-tron comes with a handy 25-litre frunk (front boot), which gives you a place to store your charging cables and frees up boot space . "I think it’s really handy that you get 40/20/40 split-folding rear seats. They let you feed long items through from the boot without compromising the outer rear seats." – Dan Jones, Senior Reviewer Buying & owning Those after the Audi S6 e-tron Sportback or Avant as a cash purchase can expect to pay slightly less for the equivalent Porsche Taycan 4S and around the same for the equivalent BMW i5 . Customers buying on PCP finance will be happy to know that the S6 e-tron is predicted to depreciate at the same rate as the BMW i5 Touring and much slower than the Taycan, and that helps to keep monthly payments competitive. Company car drivers can expect to pay around the same BIK tax on all three. There’s only one trim level available with the S6 e-tron but it comes packed with kit, including 21in alloy wheels, a panoramic glass sunroof with switchable transparency, soft-close doors, a Napa leather interior, heated and ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, a Bang & Olufsen premium sound system with 16-speakers (including in the front headrests) and wireless phone-charging. Providing you can find a charger that’s fast enough, the S6 e-tron’s maximum charging rate of 270kW means it should go from 10-80% in just 21 minutes. For context, that’s slightly faster than the BMW i5 and Mercedes-AMG EQS but slower than the Porsche Taycan , which can charge up to 320kW. The S6 e-tron is too new to have been included in our 2024 What Car? Reliability Survey . Audi placed 24th out of the 31 brands included, below BMW, Porsche and Mercedes. A three-year/60,000-mile warranty comes as standard with the S6 e-tron. At the time of writing, the S6 e-tron has not been tested for safety by Euro NCAP . We can tell you that it comes with lots of safety equipment, including automatic emergency braking ( AEB ), lane-departure warning, front cross-traffic assist, traffic-sign recognition and driver-attention monitoring. "Unlike with the BMW i5 , there are not many options you can add to the Audi S6 e-tron but I don't see that as a problem because of the extensive equipment list." – Dan Jones, Senior Reviewer For all the latest reviews, advice and new car deals, sign up to the What Car? newsletter here FAQs With its 94.9kWh (usable) battery, the S6 e-tron will officially cover up to 402 miles between charges. The S6 e-tron’s two motors produce a total of 496bhp and feed it to all four wheels, meaning it has four-wheel drive . As a cash purchase, the S6 e-tron will cost you slightly more than the equivalent Porsche Taycan 4S and about the same as the BMW i5 M60 xDrive . With a maximum charging rate of 270kW, the S6 e-tron will go from 10-80% in around 21 minutes – faster than the BMW i5 but quite a bit slower than the Porsche Taycan .Trump lines up billionaire defense investor and megadonor to be No. 2 at Pentagon

The House Oversight Committee demanded access to internal documents from the Federal Emergency Management Agency for its investigation into allegations of bias against Donald Trump voters. Following a high-profile hearing before the committee on Tuesday, committee members are pressing FEMA administrator Deanne Criswell to provide information that could determine whether the agency discriminated against certain properties displaying Trump campaign signs. The hearing came after testimony from whistleblowers inside the agency indicated they were instructed to skip those houses while seeking to offer disaster relief from devastating hurricanes. BIDEN ADMINISTRATION, CONGRESS, AND UNIONS TRY TO ‘TRUMP-PROOF SCIENCE’ “Recent whistleblower accounts allege that FEMA supervisors are deviating from the Agency’s mission and limiting relief based on the political affiliations of disaster survivors,” Committee Chairman James Comer (R-KY) wrote. “In light of these allegations, the Committee is seeking documents and information to ensure transparency and guarantee that disaster relief for Americans is not dictated based on political affiliation.” The committee first opened its investigation after whistleblowers claimed they were instructed to “avoid homes advertising Trump” while surveying homes affected by hurricanes Helene and Milton in Florida . That supervisor who issued those instructions, Marn’i Washington, was later fired from her role, according to Criswell, calling those actions “reprehensible.” Criswell testified earlier this month there was no evidence those instructions extended beyond those under Washington’s control. However, lawmakers on the Oversight Committee pointed to other whistleblower reports indicating the practices “may be more widespread than you led the Committee to believe.” HOW KAMALA HARRIS PLOWED THROUGH $1 BILLION Lawmakers cited an anonymous FEMA official who told the committee that the practice of avoiding “white or conservative-dominated” neighborhoods has been an “open secret at the agency that has been going on for years.” Another whistleblower contacted the committee to testify that a FEMA contractor warned a “disabled veteran’s family” in Georgia to remove Trump campaign materials from their home to ensure they were not viewed as “domestic terrorists.” “The Committee is in the process of investigating these claims. If they are true, they would corroborate concerns that political discrimination extends beyond Ms. Washington,” Comer wrote. “Furthermore, they suggest an apparent culture, whether sanctioned or not, within FEMA to politically discriminate against disaster survivors, specifically those who support President-elect Donald Trump.” Washington has since defended her actions by noting she was merely following protocol when issuing guidance to avoid some homes and areas over others. TRUMP CABINET PICKS: WHO'S BEEN TAPPED TO SERVE IN THE PRESIDENT-ELECT'S ADMINISTRATION The language in leaked documents was “shorthand,” Washington said, noting that she was letting her supervisors “know specific streets we could not do because of hostile political encounters,” she told the Washington Examiner. According to communications obtained by the Washington Examiner, Washington was encouraged and supported in her decision to avoid certain streets “to keep the team safe.” Washington noted that not only did she and her teams canvas houses with Trump signage, but they also “registered and provided resources to Trump supporters.” However, Washington said she added a bullet point on the team instructions about de-escalation, which she said was necessary because “FEMA workers were having their lives threatened.” Documents requested by the committee include all Disaster Survivor Assistance surveys and incident reports that refer to a survivor’s political affiliation, including but not limited to references about Trump or related campaign materials. Lawmakers are also demanding access to any instructions, policies, or guidelines referring to avoidance, de-escalation, disengagement, and hostility. CLICK HERE TO READ MORE FROM THE WASHINGTON EXAMINER FEMA is also being asked to provide information on any reports or complaints the agency received about not being contacted by FEMA personnel or “apparent political discrimination” as well as any internal reports from FEMA employees or volunteers relating to political discrimination. In addition to documents, the committee is pressing FEMA to allow a briefing with Task Force Lead Chad Hershey, who led Washington's team as well as the highest-ranking official “with specific responsibility over disaster relief efforts in response to Hurricanes Helene and Milton in Georgia .”

Hannah Kobayashi's family react to Mexico sighting bombshell as mystery around 'disappearance' deepens By MELISSA KOENIG FOR DAILYMAIL.COM Published: 18:10 EST, 3 December 2024 | Updated: 18:56 EST, 3 December 2024 e-mail 1 View comments Hannah Kobayashi's family has surprisingly called for the search for the missing Hawaii woman to continue after she was seen crossing the US-Mexico border , and warned against 'speculative conclusions.' Kobayashi, 30, was reported missing after she flew from her home state to Los Angeles on November 8 for a connecting flight to New York City that she never boarded. Security footage later captured her leaving the airport , carrying only a backpack. She was then spotted several times throughout the Los Angeles metropolitan area in the days that followed - before she stopped responding to messages on November 11. The aspiring photographer then went to Union Station that day and used her passport to buy a ticket to the border. The LAPD announced on Monday that Kobayashi was seen alive on footage from the border near Tijuana on November 12 and 13 - about 11 days before her father took his own life . Her relatives have now addressed the update, saying the search for her is 'far from over, and they are committed to doing everything possible to bring her home safely'. 'We are deeply grateful for the urgency and dedication law enforcement has shown in investigating Hannah's disappearance,' they said in a statement shared online by NewsNation correspondent Brian Entin. 'Our family remains hopeful that Hannah is safe and urges everyone to continue the search. Hannah Kobayashi, 30, was seen crossing the US-Mexico border on November 12, as her family reported her missing The family has long claimed they were worried she may be in danger 'We want answers and a resolution that ensures Hannah's safety and urge law enforcement and the public to stay focused on finding her and to avoid speculative conclusions. 'Spreading awareness and sharing verified information about her case is crucial, and we deeply appreciate your continued support in these efforts.' They have repeatedly shared their concerns that Hannah may be in danger, with her sister, Sydni saying that even if she decided to go off-grid, she would have reached out after her father took his own life during the search efforts. 'With my father's passing, with it being everywhere, in her right state of mind, she would have never thought to not reach out to anybody,' she told Hawaii News Now. Sydni also shared similar sentiments with NewsNation . 'Intuitively knowing her and being so close to her my entire life, I just know this is absolutely not like her,' the worried sister said. She went on to say she is convinced Hannah would not have ran away and was 'an amazing and beautiful person.' Kobayashi was seen leaving Los Angeles International Airport, carrying only a backpack, as police say she 'intentionally' missed her connecting flight to New York City The family has also claimed that they received a string of strange text messages from Kobayashi that seemed to suggest she was in trouble and someone had stolen her money. In the messages, she claimed she had recently undergone a 'spiritual awakening,' after she was due to meet family in New York. In another, she claimed: 'Deep Hackers wiped my identity, stole all of my funds, & have had me on a mind f**k since Friday.' A third text message to a friend said she was 'tricked pretty much into giving away all my funds for someone I thought I love.' Kobayashi had also sent some unusual Venmo payments following her disappearance. Kobayashi's family argued that she was acting unusually in the days after she missed her flight to New York, citing odd text messages and Venmo payments One payment was sent at 6:25pm on November 9 to a person named Veronica Almendarez for an unknown amount, with the description of the payment only showing a drawn bow and arrow emoji. The second was made less than an hour later to someone called Jonathan Taylor, also for an undisclosed amount, with the description only saying: 'Reading.' Family members said the did not recognize either name, and have noted hat Kobayashi's phone has been off since November 11, with her last pinned location being the Los Angeles International Airport. But the LAPD has since determined that Kobayashi 'intentionally' missed her connection to the Big Apple on November 8, and are now classifying her disappearance as 'voluntary.' Police noted there is no evidence of human trafficking of foul play, and claimed that she seemed to have wanted a less complicated life. 'The investigators noted that before departing Maui, Kobayashi expressed a desire to step away from modern connectivity,' the Los Angeles Police Department said in a statement. The authorities added they will not further their investigation of Kobayashi but will be notified if she returns to America and they encourage her to contact police or the American Embassy in Mexico to 'confirm her well-being'. Amid the search efforts, Kobayashi's father, Ryan Kobayashi, took his own life Police say they will not further their investigation of Kobayashi but will be notified if she returns to America Ahead of the news, Kobayashi's family shut down the Facebook page devoted to her search efforts - claiming they were receiving death threats. The Help Us Find Hannah page was removed from the social media site on Sunday, and Kobayashi's sister, Sydni, and her mother, Brandi Yee, said they have been reporting the threats to the FBI. There are now also questions around the GoFundMe the family set up now that Kobayashi has been determined to not be a victim of foul play. Many donors to the fundraiser, which raked in more than $47,000, are demanding refunds . The fundraiser was set up on November 15 with a $50,000 goal. As of Tuesday, it was at 94 percent of the way there. According to the GoFundMe, the money was to be used for food and hydration for search teams, transportation, communication devices and technology, a media campaign, 'temporary accommodations for essential personnel' and on-site support for the family. On November 26, the family updated the fundraiser to add funeral costs for Kobayashi's father to its scope. A spokesman for GoFundMe confirmed that the fundraiser remains within its terms of service at this time. The action raises concerns that Trump's administration may change Ukraine war policy. The Washington Post reports that Biden's team fears a policy shift after Trump's January 20 inauguration. HIMARS rocket munitions, anti-drone ammunition, and anti-personnel landmines are being supplied by the exiting administration for billions of dollars. Officials believe the goal is to empower Ukraine and encourage its authorities to expand their military beyond 160,000. Kyiv is also allowed to launch missile strikes deep into Russia by the Biden administration. Officials see this as a crucial opportunity for Ukraine to gain an edge before Trump's policy shift. Trump may name retired General Keith Kellogg a special envoy for Russia and Ukraine. Kellogg has suggested linking U.S. help to Ukraine's peace talks and increasing arms deliveries to push Russia. JonBenet Ramsey murder case key players: Where are they now?The latest batch of ballots moved the Democratic challenger into the lead in a Central Valley congressional district, one of two in California that have not yet been called. The updated count Wednesday morning in District 13 has Democrat Adam Gray with 104,503 votes and Republican incumbent John Duarte with 104,321. Ninety-nine percent of the ballots had been counted, according to the Associated Press. It was the first time that Gray had held the lead. The two men ran against each other for the seat in 2022, and the race was tight then, too: Duarte won by 564 votes. The district includes parts of the counties of Merced, Madera, San Joaquin, Stanislaus and Fresno. Both men have backgrounds in family agricultural businesses, and Gray was an Assembly member from 2012 to 2022. In the state’s other uncalled House race — District 45, in Los Angeles and Orange counties — Democratic challenger Derek Tran is saying he has won , but Republican incumbent Michelle Steel had not conceded as of Wednesday afternoon. The tally as of Tuesday evening, with 99% of the votes counted, was 157,960 for Tran and 157,347 for Steel, according to the Associated Press. Because of the tightness of the race, both candidates have asked donors to finance a possible recount. Already, one congressional seat in California has been flipped from Republican to Democrat : George Whitesides took a northern Los Angeles County district from incumbent Mike Garcia. The seven California House districts in which no incumbent was running were all won by a candidate of the previous representative’s party: Besides the two in California, one other U.S. House race has not been called, in an Iowa district where the Republican incumbent holds an 800-vote lead over her Democratic challenger.

The Indiana Office of Technology and the Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM) are expanding their partnership with Purdue University and Indiana University (IU) to safeguard an essential utility for state residents: water. The agencies and universities are broadening the scope of their program, adding utilities that manage water and wastewater services to help address vulnerabilities in these local government systems. Through the partnership, cybersecurity experts and students from and IU’s will evaluate the digital defenses of water and wastewater facilities. After conducting assessments, the team will provide a detailed road map for improving security, personalized to each facility’s needs. With the expansion, the program is now open to other non-local government agencies in the state. “Our partnership over the past two years with Purdue University and Indiana University has been incredibly beneficial to the nearly 100 local governments that have taken part in the cybersecurity assessments,” Tracy Barnes, Indiana state chief information officer, said in a . “Water facilities are frequently being targeted, and it’s important that we provide them with clear direction on how to improve their cybersecurity.” The initiative addresses : smaller utilities often lack the resources to develop and maintain comprehensive cybersecurity measures. With , the consequences of a successful breach could disrupt clean water access for entire communities, posing financial and public health risks. IDEM Commissioner Brian Rockensuess emphasized the importance of safeguarding public utility systems in a statement, calling on all water utilities to participate in the program. “We strongly encourage Indiana drinking water and wastewater utilities to take advantage of this opportunity. Safeguarding the integrity of public utility infrastructure is vital to ensuring safe, clean water for Hoosiers,” he said. The Cybertrack program was originally launched in 2022. It was designed to support local governments by originating a cybersecurity assessment methodology for them that incorporated frameworks like those from the and the . To date, nearly 100 assessments have been done on behalf of locals; plans are to complete at least 342 through 2026.

A criminal complaint filed in federal court recently accuses Manuel Tamayo-Torres of posting a video online on Nov. 21 that included statements threatening to harm the incoming president. Investigators reviewed the suspect's social media account and reported finding pictures of the suspect holding up firearms, records show. Data from local customs shows that Guangxi's trade with ASEAN reached 307.65 billion yuan ($ 42 billion ) in the first 10 months of 2024, a 15.5 percent increase year-on-year. 2024 is also designated as the China-ASEAN Year of People-to-People Exchanges. Ong Tee Keat, president of the Belt and Road Initiative Caucus for Asia Pacific, stressed in his keynote speech that more BRI programs of in-depth people engagement can be tailor-made to suit the local conditions of ASEAN countries that have agreed to build a community of shared future with China. He also pointed out that more new drivers for economic growth and sociocultural engagement are emerging from time to time as the China-ASEAN partnership is steadily evolving and progressing with the changing regional dynamics and developmental needs. According to Hein Khaing, director of China Studies Institute (Myanmar), the key to promote people-to-people connectivity between China and ASEAN countries is to enhance the building of a community of shared future and an independent knowledge and discourse system of the two sides. Sharlene May Cua, vice president of Philippine Association for Chinese Studies, noted that culture and language mutual learning as well as e-commerce business development through e-commerce platforms and social media channels are the kinds of people-to-people exchanges that China and the Philippines need. In 2013, China proposed building a closer China-ASEAN community with a shared future and launched the BRI. Since then, bilateral exchanges and cooperation have intensified, covering tourism, education, culture, sports, and more. This forum is organized by the Western Returned Scholars Association. It has attracted more than 150 political, business and academic representatives from BRI partner countries in southeast Asia, as well as experts, scholars, and representatives from the association and in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region.

NEW ORLEANS — A scruffy little fugitive is on the lam again in New Orleans, gaining fame as he outwits a tenacious band of citizens armed with night-vision binoculars, nets and a tranquilizer rifle. Scrim, a 17-pound mutt that's mostly terrier, has become a folk hero, inspiring tattoos, T-shirts and even a ballad as he eludes capture from the posse of volunteers. And like any antihero, Scrim has a backstory: Rescued from semi-feral life at a trailer park and adopted from a shelter, the dog broke loose in April and scurried around the city until he was cornered in October and brought to a new home. Weeks later, he'd had enough. Scrim leaped out of a second-story window, a desperate act recorded in a now-viral video. Since then, despite a stream of daily sightings, he's roamed free. Leading the recapture effort is Michelle Cheramie, a 55-year-old former information technology professional. She lost everything — home, car, possessions — in Hurricane Katrina in 2005, and in the aftermath, found her calling rescuing pets. “I was like, ‘This is what I should be doing,’” Cheramie said. “I was born to rescue.” She launched Zeus’ Rescues, a nonprofit shelter that now averages 600 cat and dog adoptions a year and offers free pet food to anyone who needs it. She helped Scrim find the home he first escaped from. It was Cheramie's window Scrim leaped from in November. She's resumed her relentless mission since then, posting flyers on telephone poles and logging social media updates on his reported whereabouts. She's invested thousands of dollars on wildlife cameras, thermal sensors and other gear. She took a course offered by the San Diego Zoo on the finer points of tranquilizing animals. And she's developed a network of volunteers — the kind of neighbors who are willing to grid-search a city at 3 a.m. Scrim on Oct. 24 at the Metairie Small Animal Hospital in Metairie, La. People like writer David W. Brown, who manages a crowd-sourced Google Map of all known Scrim sightings. He says the search galvanized residents from all walks of life to come together. As they search for Scrim, they hand out supplies to people in need. “Being a member of the community is seeing problems and doing what you can to make life a little better for the people around here and the animals around you,” Brown said. Neighbor Tammy Murray had to close her furniture store and lost her father to Parkinson's disease. This search, she says, got her mojo back. “Literally, for months, I’ve done nothing but hunt this dog,” said Murray, 53. “I feel like Wile E. Coyote on a daily basis with him.” Murray drives the Zeus' Rescues van toward reported Scrim sightings. She also handles a tactical net launcher, which looks like an oversized flashlight and once misfired, shattering the van's window as Scrim sped away. After realizing Scrim came to recognize the sound of the van's diesel engine, Murray switched to a Vespa scooter for stealth. Michelle Cheramie, director of Zeus' Rescues, left, walks with Scrim on Oct. 24 at the Metairie Small Animal Hospital in Metairie, La. Near-misses have been tantalizing. The search party spotted Scrim napping beneath an elevated house, and wrapped construction netting around the perimeter, but an over-eager volunteer broke ranks and dashed forward, leaving an opening Scrim slipped through. Scrim's repeated escapades prompted near-daily local media coverage and a devoted online following. Cheramie can relate. “We’re all running from something or to something," she said. "He's doing that, too.” Cheramie's team dreams of placing the pooch in a safe and loving environment. But a social media chorus growing under the hashtag #FreeScrim has other ideas — they say the runaway should be allowed a life of self-determination. The animal rescue volunteers consider that misguided. “The streets of New Orleans are not the place for a dog to be free,” Cheramie said. “It’s too dangerous.” Scrim rests in a kennel Oct. 24 at the Metairie Small Animal Hospital in Metairie, La. Scrim was a mess when Cheramie briefly recaptured him in October, with matted fur, missing teeth and a tattered ear. His trembling body was scraped and bruised, and punctured by projectiles. A vet removed one, but decided against operating to take out a possible bullet. The dog initially appeared content indoors, sitting in Cheramie's lap or napping beside her bed. Then while she was out one day, Scrim chewed through a mesh screen, dropped 13 feet to the ground and squeezed through a gap in the fence, trotting away. Murray said Cheramie's four cats probably spooked him. Cheramie thinks they may have gotten territorial. Devastated but undeterred, the pair is reassessing where Scrim might fit best — maybe a secure animal sanctuary with big outdoor spaces where other dogs can keep him company. Somewhere, Murray says, “where he can just breathe and be.” A fugitive gains fame in New Orleans eluding dart guns and nets Scrim sits in the arms of Zoey Ponder on Oct. 24 at Metairie Small Animal Hospital in Metairie. The major parties backed the bill that would make platforms including TikTok, Facebook, Snapchat, Reddit, X and Instagram liable for fines of up to 50 million Australian dollars (£26 million) for systemic failures to prevent young children from holding accounts. The legislation was passed with 102 votes in favour to 13 against. If the bill becomes law this week, the platforms would have one year to work out how to implement the age restrictions before the penalties are enforced. Opposition lawmaker Dan Tehan told Parliament the government had agreed to accept amendments in the Senate that would bolster privacy protections. Platforms would not be allowed to compel users to provide government-issued identity documents including passports or driver’s licences. The platforms also could not demand digital identification through a government system. “Will it be perfect? No. But is any law perfect? No, it’s not. But if it helps, even if it helps in just the smallest of ways, it will make a huge difference to people’s lives,” Mr Tehan told Parliament. Communications minister Michelle Rowland said the Senate would debate the bill later on Wednesday. The major parties’ support all but guarantees the legislation will be passed by the Senate, where no party holds a majority of seats. Lawmakers who were not aligned with either the government or the opposition were most critical of the legislation during debate on Tuesday and Wednesday. Criticisms include that the legislation had been rushed through Parliament without adequate scrutiny, would not work, would create privacy risks for users of all ages and would take away parents’ authority to decide what is best for their children. Critics also argue the ban would isolate children, deprive them of positive aspects of social media, drive children to the dark web, make children too young for social media reluctant to report harms they encountered and take away incentives for platforms to make online spaces safer. Independent lawmaker Zoe Daniel said the legislation would “make zero difference to the harms that are inherent to social media”. “The true object of this legislation is not to make social media safe by design, but to make parents and voters feel like the government is doing something about it,” Ms Daniel told Parliament. “There is a reason why the government parades this legislation as world-leading, that’s because no other country wants to do it,” she added. The platforms had asked for the vote on legislation to be delayed until at least June next year when a government-commissioned evaluation of age assurance technologies made its report on how the ban could been enforced.jilipark

District Attorney Erik Johnson has officially designated 2025 as the “Year of the Child” in District 22, an initiative aimed at enhancing the health, safety, and well-being of children throughout the district. This initiative underscores the vital role of the District Attorney’s Office in safeguarding children and fostering stronger support systems within the community. As District Attorney, Johnson and his office are dedicated to addressing cases involving child victims and witnesses, working closely with the Children’s Advocacy Center to prosecute incidents of physical and sexual abuse. “Our responsibility to protect children is paramount,” Johnson said. “Through rigorous investigations and thoughtful prosecutions, we aim to bring justice to vulnerable children and hold offenders accountable.” In addition to handling criminal cases, the District Attorney’s Office manages civil proceedings where children are neglected or deprived. These cases may ultimately lead to the termination of parental rights, ensuring children are placed in safe and nurturing environments. Johnson emphasized that his team remains steadfast in their commitment to the well-being of every child in District 22. Among the programs implemented in 2025 is the School-Based Family Services Program, in partnership with Oklahoma Human Services. This initiative aims to place social workers in every school district across District 22, providing essential services such as family support, academic assistance, mental health resources, and basic needs for students. This collaborative program, funded 80% by state grants and 20% by school districts, is designed to “build a bridge to support both educational achievement and home stability.” “By introducing school-based social workers, we enable teachers to focus on teaching while addressing the broader challenges students face,” Johnson said. “This program can improve attendance, reduce truancy, and strengthen the family support systems needed for children to thrive. With over 7,500 students in our district, I’m proud of the enthusiasm this initiative has received from local superintendents.” Another cornerstone of the “Year of the Child” is the expansion of the Care Cottage, the Children’s Advocacy Center in Ada that serves District 22. The Care Cottage provides a safe, child-friendly environment for victims of abuse to receive forensic interviews, counseling, and medical care. “This expansion will allow us to serve more children in crisis, ensuring that every child has access to the resources they need to begin healing,” Johnson said. The District Attorney’s Office will also continue to prioritize training for law enforcement on domestic abuse and child abuse investigations. Enhanced training will focus on improving report writing and case development, ensuring that the evidence gathered is strong enough to support successful prosecutions. “ By refining these skills, we can better protect children and hold offenders accountable,” Johnson said. Furthermore, the office will expand the District 22 Truancy Program, now operating in all three counties. The program, in collaboration with schools and social service agencies, helps at-risk students stay engaged in their education, addressing the root causes of truancy and ensuring long-term success for children and their families. To kick off the “Year of the Child,” Johnson will host a roundtable discussion in January 2025, bringing together social service agencies, educators, law enforcement, and community leaders. This forum will aim to enhance coordination and delivery of essential services to children across the district. “This is an opportunity for all stakeholders to get on the same page and ensure our efforts are operating at maximum potential,” Johnson said. By focusing on these comprehensive measures, District 22 is setting a powerful precedent for community collaboration and child-focused advocacy. “The ‘Year of the Child’ will be a year of action and commitment,” Johnson said. “It’s a chance for all of us to come together, support our children, and create a brighter future for every family in District 22.”

Trimble and Mallon sanctioned DUP ministers over rotation plan

Independent senator Fatima Payman has accused One Nation leader Pauline Hanson of racism.

The move could usher in an end to a protracted political crisis in the European Union country following the annulment of a presidential election by a top court. Parliament approved the new administration in a 240-143 vote in Romania’s 466-seat legislature. The new coalition is made up of the leftist Social Democratic Party (PSD) the centre-right National Liberal Party (PNL), the small ethnic Hungarian UDMR party and national minorities. It caps a month-long period of turmoil in which far-right nationalists made significant gains in a parliamentary election on December 1 a week after a first-round presidential race saw the far-right outsider Calin Georgescu emerge as the front-runner. “It will not be an easy mandate for the future government,” Mr Ciolacu, whose PSD party topped the polls in the parliamentary election, said in a statement. “We are aware that we are in the midst of a deep political crisis,” he said. “It is also a crisis of trust, and this coalition aims to regain the trust of citizens, the trust of the people.” Romania’s 16 ministerial positions will be shared among the parties, which will hold a slim majority in the legislature. It is widely seen as a tactical partnership to shut out far-right nationalists whose voices found fertile ground amid high living costs and a sluggish economy. Mr Ciolacu, who came third in the first-round presidential ballot despite polls indicating he would win the most votes, has served as prime minister since June 2023. After parliament’s approval, President Klaus Iohannis swore in the new government and warned the new Cabinet that it is entering a “difficult new period” in which “for many Romanians, there are major concerns”. Romania was plunged into turmoil after Mr Georgescu’s surprise success in the presidential race, after allegations of electoral violations and Russian interference emerged. Days before the December 8 run-off, the Constitutional Court made the unprecedented move to annul the presidential race. “We go through complicated times, but I think we all learned from mistakes of the past,” Mr Ciolacu said. “I hope that together with my colleagues in the coalition, we’ll find the best solutions to get past the challenges we have in front of us.” Mr Ciolacu said that the new government would aim to quickly organise the rerun of the presidential election in which the new coalition has agreed to put forward an agreed common pro-European candidate. Cristian Andrei, a political consultant based in Bucharest, said that the new government made up of the same political parties will likely embrace “soft populist” rhetoric such as economic patriotism, anti-austerity, and a peace solution in neighbouring Ukraine to counter the rise of far-right populism. “This will be a way to answer the concerns of many Romanians who voted for populists... but will not solve the fundamental problem of trust,” he said. “The only decisive factor now will be who and how convincing the pro-European candidates will be against this popular revolt.” George Simion, the leader of the far-right Alliance for the Unity of Romanians, which came second in the parliamentary election, said that all politicians from his party on Monday would vote against the Ciolacu government. In 2021, the PSD and the PNL also formed an unlikely but increasingly strained coalition together with UDMR, which exited the Cabinet last year after a power-sharing dispute.PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Jalen Hurts remained in the NFL's concussion protocol on Monday, limiting his ability to practice this week for the Philadelphia Eagles and casting doubt on his availability for Sunday's game against Dallas. If Hurts can't play, the Eagles would turn to backup Kenny Pickett — who suffered a rib injury and couldn't protect a big lead in a 36-33 loss to Washington — with third-stringer Tanner McKee on deck. The Eagles (12-3) need to win one more game over the final two to clinch an NFC East title and one of the conference's top two seeds. Coach Nick Sirianni gave no additional health update on Hurts but did say the QB who led the Eagles to 10 straight wins before he was forced out with the head injury wouldn't need much time this week to get ready against the Cowboys, if he was cleared. “Jalen knows how to prepare,” Sirianni said. “He knows how to get himself ready. He's a true pro." The Eagles are 9 1/2-point favorites over the division rival Cowboys (7-8), per BetMGM Sportsbook. Sirianni said the Eagles would lean on the medical staff on a daily basis to know where Hurts — who threw two touchdown passes and ran for a pair of scores in the first meeting against Dallas in November — was in his recovery from the head injury. Hurts was ruled out early at Washington after his head slammed against the ground on one run and he was hit in the helmet by Commanders linebacker Frankie Luvu at the end of another. “He's always done a good job of protecting himself both as a passer and a runner,” Sirianni said. “Any time you lose one of your best players, you wish they'd do something else or not take that hit." Hurts shook off a sluggish start over the first four games and has thrown 18 touchdowns against just five interceptions to turn the Eagles into Super Bowl contenders. “Every time there's a player out,” Sirianni said, “there's an adjustment to be made.” Saquon Barkley and the running game. Barkley was held to 41 yards after the first quarter but 150 yards is 150 yards and he still has a shot at NFL history. Barkley leads the NFL with 1,838 yards rushing and is 268 yards away from passing Eric Dickerson and his 2,105 yards for the Los Angeles Rams in 1984 for the season mark. Barkley is 162 yards shy of becoming the ninth player in NFL history with 2,000 yards rushing in a season. Backup QB. Pickett was 14 of 24 for 143 yards in relief, throwing a touchdown pass to A.J. Brown and an interception. Pickett played his first meaningful football in a year. The Eagles use McKee as the emergency QB, but the sixth-round pick in the 2023 draft could be in the mix if Hurts sat out against Dallas. Pickett is from New Jersey and said when he was acquired from Pittsburgh that he had “great memories” of going to games at Lincoln Financial Field with his dad and grandfather since he was 5. The chance to run out of the home team tunnel — which he could get Sunday if he's the starting QB — left him absolutely delighted. Pickett, a first-round pick out of Pitt in 2022, went 14-10 as a starter for the Steelers. “I was impressed by Pickett, honestly," Washington coach Dan Quinn said Monday. "I thought he threw the ball with good accuracy to the right spots. He’s a nice athlete (who can) move, so I can see why they would want him in that system. I thought he got outside and had good scramble ability. Wasn’t surprised they didn’t run the sneaks to go through that.” Zack Baun. The linebacker barely caused a ripple on the transactions wire in March but has been arguably the MVP of the defense. He forced a fumble in the third quarter that set up a score, one of five turnovers for the Eagles. He also had two tackles for losses. The No. 1 seed. The Eagles all but cost themselves a shot at the top spot in the NFC and a bye with the late-game collapse in Washington. The Eagles will clinch the division with a victory over the Cowboys or Giants and most likely will finish with the No. 2 seed. They are one game behind both the Detroit Lions (13-2) and the Minnesota Vikings (13-2) in the NFC standings. Eagles fans can still chant, “We're No. 1!” but it's a long shot. To clinch the No. 1 seed, the Eagles need to beat Dallas and the Giants. And the Lions need to lose their last two games against San Francisco (6-9) and Minnesota. And the Vikings needs to lose to Green Bay (10-4) and beat the Lions in Week 18. Should the status quo remain, the Eagles would host Washington in a playoff game. Beyond Hurts, edge rusher Josh Sweat left with an ankle injury and defensive tackle Jordan Davis limped off in the second quarter. ... Pickett said he had his ribs X-rayed and would undergo further testing. Sirianni had no update Monday on Pickett's condition. 1,000 — Brown became the first Eagles receiver to top 1,000 yards in three straight seasons since Mike Quick from 1983-85. The Eagles can clinch the division and a home playoff game with two lightweights left on the schedule, both at home. The Eagles play Dallas on Sunday in a game bumped to a 1 p.m. kickoff and end the season against the New York Giants. AP NFL: https://apnews.com/hub/nfl

jili free 100 A judge denied Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs bail for a third time on Wednesday, after prosecutors accused the music mogul of trying to tamper with witnesses and using fellow inmates’ resources to contact third parties in an attempt to sway a potential jury pool — all from behind bars. The 55-year-old appeared in Manhattan federal court last Friday, hugging his lawyers and waving to his children, mother, and other family members who piled into the packed courtroom as they hoped for for his release ahead of Thanksgiving. Combs has been held at the Metropolitan Detention Center (MDC) in Brooklyn since his arrest on Sept. 16. He pleaded not guilty to sex trafficking, racketeering conspiracy and transportation to engage in prostitution charges, which are largely built around Combs’ ex-partner Casandra “Cassie” Ventura’s claims against Combs. If convicted, he faces 15 years to life in prison. Combs’ high-powered defense team has been repeatedly trying to spring Combs from jail ahead of his May 2025 trial date, putting together a substantial $50 million bail package, which includes his Miami compound, some of his children’s passports, around-the-clock monitoring and routine drug testing as collateral and terms for his release. Combs also agreed to stay in New York, living in an Upper East side three-bedroom apartment, instead of his waterfront Miami mansion. Defense attorney Marc Agnifilo compared Combs’ situation to Mike Jeffries , the former CEO of Abercrombie & Fitch who was arrested and charged with sex trafficking last month. The case is being tried in the Eastern District of New York and despite both men being accused of sex trafficking, the 80-year-old was released on a $10 million bond. Prosecutors say that beyond “superficial similarities,” Combs is charged with running a criminal enterprise “through violence, use of firearms, threats, coercion, and verbal, emotional, physical, and sexual abuse.” Prosecutors held firm that Combs should be held without bail, calling his team’s claims of new material misleading. They were adamant that Combs was a danger to the community, alleging that he has an extensive history of physical violence towards romantic partners, including once attempting to beat down a woman’s door with a hammer. Combs’ employees also “described the defendant threatening to kill them, throwing objects at them, and being struck, punched, and shoved by the defendant, and seeing him do the same to others,” according to court documents. The government’s overall argument boiled down to the idea that the court couldn’t “trust” Combs, claiming that even while detained he wasn’t following rules. They claim he had been consistently violating Bureau of Prisons rules by using fellow inmates’ prison numbers to contact outside parties. “To obtain or maintain access to other inmates’ PAC numbers, the defendant directs others to pay the inmates, including through payment processing apps and BOP commissary account deposits,” prosecutors alleged in court documents. They also claim Combs had been looping people that were not on his approved call list into three-way calls and using his children and their social media accounts as part of an orchestrated publicity campaign. Prosecutors were very concerned that Combs could tamper with witnesses and victims, alleging that in the lead-up to his arrest, he had been in contact with people who testified in the grand jury. There was also accusations of Combs allegedly using intermediaries to find “dirt” on people. In fighting against the accusation, Combs’ team made the first reference to a third potential victim in the government’s case. Previously, prosecutors said they obtained text messages between Combs and an unnamed woman who, days after Ventura filed her lawsuit, allegedly texted Combs that the 35-page suit was like reading her own “sexual trauma.” Combs’ team denies that this second woman is a victim. And on Thursday, attorney Teny Geragos noted in a redacted letter that there “was never any instruction whatsoever that Mr. Combs, or counsel, would ‘blackmail’ Victim-3.” Related Content U.S. Border Agents Seize $18 Million of Fake Gibson Guitars Drake Hints at Suing His Own Label for Defamation Over 'Not Like Us' Marilyn Manson Drops Lawsuit Against Evan Rachel Wood Jason Derulo Accuser Can’t Revive Harassment Claims in L.A., Judge Rules Last week Combs appeared in court twice, after his defense team requested an emergency hearing last Tuesday over SDNY prosecutors obtaining Combs’ personal notebooks. Combs’ team claimed the documents had been clearly labeled as legal notes and contained privileged attorney-client material. In their opposition brief to the mogul’s release on bail, prosecutors included excerpts taken from Combs’ notebook labeled, “Things to Do,” which had been photographed during a pre-planned search of the MDC facility in late October. Prosecutors claimed these excerpts contained evidence of Combs’ alleged ongoing witness tampering. One of the jotted-down missives allegedly included instructions for a third party to find “dirt” on two potential victims. Another note related to a possible payment to a witness. Combs’ attorney Marc Agnifilo accused the MDC search of being a “pretext” for prosecutors to unfairly target Combs. He claimed that Combs had clearly marked “legal” on top of the notes that prosecutors had in their possession — only to later admit that he wasn’t clear when Combs had written the label on the pads. Still, in a win for Combs, Judge Subramanian ordered prosecutors to get rid of all of the notes in their possession, and ruled that the government could not use the material as part of their detention argument until a full review had been conducted. In mid-September, SDNY unveiled their 14-page indictment against Combs . The case is largely built around the experiences of Combs’ ex-partner Ventura. The R&B singer sued Combs for sex trafficking and sexual abuse in November 2023, claiming that throughout their decade-long relationship, Combs forced her to engage in sexual acts with male sex workers. Ventura alleges that she was threatened with physical violence, professional retribution, potential leaks of the footage and was kept compliant through excessive drug use. Prosecutors have repeatedly reminded Combs’ defense and the court that their investigation into Combs was ongoing, referring to “covert” investigation methods and secret grand jury proceedings — indicating that a superseding indictment remains a possibility. The embattled music executive is also facing a growing pile of civil lawsuits . More than 30 men and women have sued Combs in New York and California, claiming they were assaulted by Combs from the 1990s and as recently as 2022. The claims come from former Danity Kane member Dawn Richard, producer Rodney “Lil Rod” Jones, working models, aspiring artists, businessmen, security guards and people who say they were teens at the time of their alleged encounters. Combs has denied all claims of sex abuse through his reps. “As his legal team has said before, Mr. Combs has full confidence in the facts and the integrity of the judicial process,” his media team previously said in a statement to Rolling Stone .

TRADITIONAL CRAFT A Tboli weaver showcases her craft at Winaca Village in Tublay, Benguet, as part of activities for the World Ikat Textiles Symposium held in Baguio City early this month. —Joel Arthur Tibaldo/Contributor BAGUIO CITY, Philippines — Domestic silk production is undergoing a revival in the provinces as international demand rises for natural dyes and indigenous fabric, experts said at this year’s World Ikat Textiles Symposium which was hosted by the Philippines for the first time in Baguio early this month. Piloted 42 years ago in Benguet province, sericulture hubs have been put up in the Cordillera, Cagayan Valley, southern Luzon and Northern Mindanao where mulberry plantations again flourish, said Julius Leaño, director of the Philippine Textile Research Institute (PTRI), in a talk he gave at the symposium. READ: Narda’s legacy: Reviving Cordillera ‘ikat’ Sericulture or silk farming is a technology that cultivates silk from the cocoons of silk moth caterpillars which latch onto mulberry branches. If the progress of mulberry silk farms continues as planned, the Philippines will be “silk sufficient” by the year 2030, employing 980 workers and earning P50 million in combined revenue, said Leaño, a published researcher specializing in textile chemistry. But technology has afforded Filipino scientists the means to harvest weaving fiber from other plants as part of a government-led textile innovation drive, he said, with the development of yarns from bamboo, or “kawayarn,” water hyacinth, bakong (Hanguana malayana in Cagayan province) and the common “saluyot” (jute). Some of these plants share the antimicrobial properties of yarn produced from pineapple, Leaño said. Research into the potentially new plant sources for yarn coincides with new product lines using domestic woven fabric, such as ikat shoes, he said. Ikat is a method of dyeing or coloring fabric in patterns before it is woven. Leading textile scholars like Joseph Lo of Singapore, Maria do Ceu Lopes da Silva of Timor Leste, Bina Rao of India and Mexican artisan Arturo Estrada Hernandez outlined ikat’s market growth and subsequent debates about authenticity among weaving cultures throughout the world. National Living Treasures Samporonia Madanlo and Barbara Ofonga, who champion traditional Tboli weaving, and Rosie Sula for Tboli chant were vocal about the way commerce has upended efforts to preserve their ikat traditions, which are tied to the culture’s spiritual roots. Indigenous ikat is generally woven by hand using handlooms, footlooms or backstrap looms and may take weeks or months to complete. But one of the biggest obstacles being solved by government sericulture initiatives is the supply of indigenous dyes and textiles, which has not helped efforts to keep the weaving knowledge alive among present-day indigenous Filipinos, according to University of the Philippines (UP) Baguio anthropology professor Analyn Salvador Amores. Amores heads the multidisciplinary program Cordillera Textiles Research Project (Corditex) of UP Baguio which has discovered and analyzed extant weaving techniques that are being reintroduced to Cordillera weavers who have long forgotten them. Corditex identified the chemical makeup of dyes used by Itneg weavers in Abra, tracked down the original plants and other botanical resources used to produce woven Cordillera garments, and even studied the music, diagrams and mythology associated with the old handloom weaving traditions. Amores said Corditex was also studying the region’s “textile value chain,” focusing on how the market, the local economy and the dwindling supply of raw materials had affected livelihoods and the protection of indigenous traditions when she first discussed the matter at the Cordillera Regional Handloom Conference in July. Qatar Scientific Club launches winter camp

Conte’s last public act as Spurs head coach after a 3-3 draw at St Mary’s in 2023 was to launch a furious tirade against his own “selfish” players who he claimed “don’t want to play under pressure” before he seemed to turn on the board as he questioned the club’s ongoing trophy drought. Eight days later Conte had left Tottenham by mutual consent after a whirlwind 16-month period, with Postecoglou his eventual permanent successor. A post shared by Antonio Conte (@antonioconte) Postecoglou has been in charge of the Premier League club for two months longer than the Italian, but managed 12 fewer matches and is currently in the middle of an injury crisis which has resulted in a drop in form, with Spurs only able to claim one victory from their last eight fixtures. However, when Postecoglou was asked if he would jump ship in the wake of making remarks like Conte did in March, 2023, he said: “Look, I don’t think it’s fair to comment. “Antonio is a world-class manager and has his own way of doing things, his own reasons for doing that. “I am here, I am in for the fight. I am in a fight, for sure. For better or worse I am not going anywhere at the moment because everything is still in my power and my responsibility. “I still have a real desire to get us through this stage so that people see what is on the other side. My resolve and determination hasn’t wavered one little bit. “I love a fight, I love a scrap, I love being in the middle of a storm when everyone doubts because I know what it is on the other side if you get through it. My job is to get through it.” Postecoglou was Celtic boss when Conte’s extraordinary 10-minute press conference made waves around the world, but acknowledged being aware of his predecessors’ comments and attempted to explain the psyche behind why a manager would make such a move. “I was on Planet Earth at that time, and yes I was well aware of it,” Postecoglou smiled. “I think you know when a manager gets to that point that there’s obviously some underlying issues. “I think most of the time when managers do that they’re trying to get a reaction, trying to get some sort of impact on the team. “In difficult moments, what you want from your leaders is action rather than inaction of just letting things drift along. He did it to try and get a positive impact on the group, one way or another. We’ve all been in that situation as a manager where you feel this is time to send a message.” Postecoglou sent out his own message on Thursday after a 1-1 draw away to Rangers when he insisted Timo Werner’s display “wasn’t acceptable” at Ibrox. Werner was replaced at half-time following an error-strewn performance, but was not alone in being below-par in Glasgow. A day later Postecoglou explained how with Spurs missing several key first-teamers, the onus is on their fit senior players to deliver a level of application and commitment – and admitted Werner will be required at St Mary’s on Sunday. “I’ve got no choice. Who else am I going to play? I’m pulling kids out of school, I literally am,” Postecoglou mentioned in reference to 16-year-old duo Malachi Hardy and Luca Williams-Barnett, who have recently made the bench. “That was the reasoning for me pointing it out last night. We need Timo. We need all of them. “In normal times if you have a poor game, there’s a price to pay. It doesn’t exist right now. We need everybody we’ve got.”If you’re a fan of MobileSyrup and, specifically, my work, you might notice I’m a big fan of anime. Over the years, I’ve watched so much anime that it’s my go-to when I’m stressed or having a bad day. So, I obviously jumped at the chance to interview Aleks Le. On TV, he’s Zenitsu in Demon Slayer (I literally have his poster on my wall), Thorfinn from Vinland Saga , Shinji Hirako in Bleach and so much more. Le already has an impressive career in Anime and American TV, but has also done lots of video game work as well including parts in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, Persona 3 Reload, Zenless Zone Zero, Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth, Horizon Forbidden West and Solo Leveling: Arise, which is based on the same web novel as his latest project, playing Sung Jin-woo in the Solo Leveling anime. Ahead of the anime’s second season and the recently released movie, we got to chat about all things Sung Jinwoo and what it’s like to be a voice actor. Unfortunately, I didn’t get the opportunity to bother him about his work in Vinland Saga or Demon Slayer. Still , the Korean web novel-turned-anime is a huge hit, and I watched the first season twice (once in Japanese and another in English), so it was an honour to pick his brain about this new series. If you want to see all of the various projects Le has participated in you can check out his IMDB here . Here’s the interview: It was really fun for me to do something like that because, it’s not many projects that I get to do a higher range, a lower range and a mid-range. It was just fun to run down the entire vocal range, and the character reminded me a lot of myself. He has a lot of imperfections, flaws, and arrogance that I also had when I was younger starting out in my voice acting career. And when I started, my voice was just as high as the original [Sung Jinwoo]. So it was kind of like a throwback for me to put this younger version of myself into the character. So the way I approached it was that I just put myself in the frame of mind I was in four or five years ago. Then, the later we got into the story, the more I just kind of settled into my natural self. But it was really fun to have that jog down memory Lane [For context, I watched the Solo Leveling ReAwakening movie that shows the first two episodes of season two] He’s [Sung Jinwoo] got a lot of things that he’s working through his head. There are newfound powers, things that he’s not familiar with the system, and there are things that he needs to find out about himself. So he’s a lot more level-headed than he was in the first season, but I think even though he’s more in control of his abilities, he’s also less arrogant about them now. In the first season he was very much like, this is what I have to do – this, this and this. But now he’s more “Okay, I gotta figure this out before I make any drastic moves and decisions.” So he’s a lot more meticulous about his actions now, and I think that’s an interesting way to portray him. Or even a different light to view him through as opposed to the way he ended the first season, which was him being so full of himself when fighting certain opponents. Now, he still has that air of arrogance, but he’s a lot more knowledgeable. And now that he’s more knowledgeable, he’s aware that there are a lot of things that he can work on himself. So there is definitely a huge difference on where we’re taking this character next. Oh, yeah, absolutely. I mean, when we were setting the tone for the character in the first season, it was super hard to nail down who he was and all the little quirks that he has when he speaks. So, as with any character, the first time you’re portraying him is always very important and also very difficult. With a character that changes so much, it’s also very hard to get a hold of. There were a lot of taxing battle scenes and taxing emotional scenes so I think in season two, he’s gotten to a point where he’s found himself enough where we have less of that to work through, but it’s just as demanding to make any moments with him on screen memorable. Just like we did in the first season. I love the scene in episode six from the very first season. A nd that’s the scene where he fights a group of guys. T hat was a really cool moment where you saw him break down a little bit and regain himself with this newfound confidence, and I just thought that was a very memorable scene. I remember us spending a lot of time trying to get that perfect because that was the first time we were introducing his, like, kind of deep, deep voice as well. So, that was really challenging for me. [ I noted that this is the first time Sung Jinwoo killed any humans. Up until this point, he’s only fought monsters.] Yeah, that was the scene when he actually starts killing people for the first time. He kind of hesitates, but then he’s like, no, I have to do this. So we were also playing with that dynamic and how much it affects him as well. I think I’ve seen how it resonates because on TikTok and stuff, there are so many edits of him, and the thing that seems to strike a chord with a lot of people is strength and the ability to improve oneself. Like I’ve seen so many gym edits with the audio from Solo Leveling, and I feel like the message of self-improvement is very much something that everybody strives for. It’s really cool to see people find motivation in that. For me, obviously, the iconic scenes that all the fans love, are the ‘Arise’ scene... But I feel that there are a lot of very memorable and fan-favourite moments from the show that people love to reference and come back to. Each stage of his life has a different defining moment, and [there’s] one that I’m looking forward to in particular. We got a little bit of it in season one, where he interacts with some people here and there, and sometimes it’s funny. Sometimes it’s really cool. I’m just excited to see more of that because now we’re going to start to see the main cast of characters interact with him for the very first time. Beyond just like, “Hey, I know you,” they’re gonna be like, “Oh so this is who we’re dealing with,” and I’m super excited for everybody to find out about it and just see how we interact with everybody else. [ I mention that I particularly like his interaction with one of his new summons who’s kind of a dumb kind of character] And that summons, those are kind of exciting and funny interactions that I’m super looking forward to as well, so that’ll be very, very cool. I feel like there is a trend in my career where I play a lot of characters with two sides to them. Or multiple different personalities, and I find that really funny that a lot of my jobs do require me to have different voices or different attitudes of the same character. But this one was definitely challenging in the sense that the dialogue was very important. So, we had to put so much effort into making sure the writing and the delivery were as good as they could be. Um, so anime-wise, this might be the hardest one that I’ve had to do so far. I’m grateful for it because it’s an amazing challenge. I’m also very, very happy with our end product, and I’m glad a lot of people are enjoying it as well. Vocally though. I mean, there are a ton of other projects where I have to go very extreme with my vocals, but this one is no joke either. This one has a lot of demands. I would say. It really just depends on the day. Some days, this is easy for me. Some days this is hard. So for the most part, everything is hard until you finish doing it. I was going to say I would love the ability to summon Shadows, but the thing about Shadows is that it has to be somebody freshly deceased, and I don’t see myself trying to kill anybody any time soon. So I don’t think I could use that power as effectively, or I don’t think I’d want to use that power. But he has the ability to access the shop, which I don’t think people talk about enough. I think that’s the coolest ability in the show because he can buy potions or daggers and weapons and armour, and I’m like; I would love to have a shop. If I’m low on energy, I’d love just to buy an energy drink from the shop, or if I’m feeling sick, I’d love to get a healing potion, you know. So I think the best ability to have is the shop. Be ready to... he chuckles... it sounds negative, but be ready to fail. With an industry like acting, you’re never guaranteed a job. People think, oh, just because he’s in a lot of things, that means that I’ve always been successful. No, I fail more than I succeed. Because every single job that I’m a part of, I had to audition and basically battle hundreds if not thousands of other voice actors to get the part. So, every time you’re auditioning for something, you’re going up against a lot of people and just be aware that if somebody’s better than you for the role, that doesn’t mean you’re really bad; it doesn’t mean that you suck, it just means that you didn’t get it this time and you just gotta be ready to fail. There’s a lot of failure in this line of work; you just have to be mentally prepared to keep failing. If you don’t deal well with failure, this isn’t the job for you. You need very, very thick skin for something like this. This interview was edited for language and clarity. Solo Leveling season two will premiere on Crunchyroll in January 2025.CLEVELAND (AP) — Je'Shawn Stevenson scored 23 points as Cleveland State beat Midway University 116-60 on Sunday. W hen the holiday season rolls around, Katherine DeGroot digs out the glue gun, buys craft items in bulk and forages for additional supplies in her refrigerator, pantry and backyard. She then makes her own holiday decor, some of which her family gives as gifts. “We use whatever I have around the house or even outside,” said DeGroot. The Instagrammer also shares her latest projects as part of a growing social media community of DIY decor enthusiasts swapping ideas while keeping sustainability in mind. While the holidays are the most wonderful time of the year, they can also be the most wasteful. According to one Stanford University study, Americans throw out an estimated 25% more trash during the holidays than at any other time of the year. To help reduce a household’s carbon footprint during this time and keep items out of landfills, the University of Minnesota’s Office of Sustainability has created a holiday guide covering tips on sustainable decorating as well as gift-giving and food practices. Carley Rice, university sustainability coordinator, said breaking old holiday habits can be difficult. The key is baby steps. “We don’t want to overwhelm anyone. Start small, and make changes that make sense to you and your family right now,” she said. For starters, try making your own holiday decorations using sustainable materials and supplies that can be purchased in bulk. Going DIY can be more economical. Want to start making a dent toward a more cost-conscious, sustainable holiday? Here are how-tos on making paper snowflakes, dried fruit garlands, candles and potpourri from Instagrammers DeGroot (@katherinelouisedegroot) and Emma O’Connor (@emmaelizabethoconnor). Paper bag snowflakes Katherine DeGroot buys inexpensive brown paper lunch bags to create DIY snowflakes. “They’re festive into the new year,” DeGroot added. “They’re great for gifting, as well.” Makes 1 Supplies: 8 brown paper lunch bags, scissors, hot glue gun. Optional: stapler, string and hole puncher. To assemble: Glue eight bags together by placing the first bag on a flat surface. Make sure the bag’s opening is on top and the smooth surface side of the bag without the crease faces upward. Draw an upside-down T with the glue onto the bag. Stack one of the unglued bags on top, facing the same way as the first bag. Repeat gluing and stacking each of the remaining bags. When you get to the last bag, stack but do not glue the top. To design: Take scissors and create a snowflake design by cutting edges of stacked bags. Creative liberties can be taken here. When finished, open the snowflake by joining the two end pieces together, which will form a circle. Glue end pieces together. Staple for an extra-secure snowflake. Use for holiday decor on mantels, tabletops, walls or windows. If hanging the snowflakes, pull a string through an existing hole or use a hole puncher. Stovetop winter potpourri One of the reasons DeGroot likes to make this as a gift is that the ingredients are versatile. In this batch, she uses cranberries, oranges, cinnamon sticks and star anise. However, cloves, fresh rosemary, lemons, apples or vanilla beans also are suitable. Any way you slice it, this spin on potpourri imbues the spirit of the holidays. Makes 4 gift bags Supplies: Generous bundle of evergreen clippings, 12 ounces of fresh cranberries, 4 oranges, 8 cinnamon sticks, 12 star anise, 4 paper sandwich bags. To assemble: In each bag, add some evergreen clippings, about 1 1⁄2 cups cranberries, 1 orange, 2 cinnamon sticks and 3 star anise. To use: Write directions for use by your recipient: Put items in a small pot, add just enough water to cover the ingredients, bring to a simmer, and enjoy the aroma! Dried fruit garland Emma O’Connor’s go-to DIY decor item adds vibrancy and color to her home during the holidays. “I have always admired using natural resources to decorate seasonally. This is also an easy craft to do with little helping hands,” she said. Makes 12 feet of garland Supplies: 4 oranges or grapefruit; 8 ounces fresh cranberries; dishcloth; parchment paper; baking sheets and baking rack; kitchen twine or string; sewing needle. To prepare: Preheat oven to 200 F. Slice oranges and grapefruit into 1⁄8- to 1⁄4-inch round slices. Pat dry with a dishcloth and arrange slices on parchment-lined baking sheets. To dry fruit: Bake for 3 to 4 hours or until dry, flipping halfway through. Let slices cool on a baking rack. To finish: Use kitchen twine or string and a sewing needle to thread through dried fruits and fresh cranberries. Beeswax jelly jar candles DeGroot especially loves this candle-making project because it’s a family activity. And while they like to make a batch during this time of year for that golden holiday glow, the effort pays off far beyond. “I love these beeswax candles because they can be used all year round,” said DeGroot, adding that she prefers beeswax over other candle bases because it burns cleaner. Makes 4 to 5 small/medium candles in jelly-sized jars Supplies: 2-pound bag of beeswax pellets or ends of beeswax candles; 4 to 5 wicks; double boiler or two pots; and 4 to 5 small- to medium-sized heat-resistant, fireproof containers, such as jelly or Mason jars. Optional: Chopsticks, clothespins or Popsicle sticks for centering the wick and essential oils for scents. To prepare: Using a double boiler, pour candle wax into the top pot and place on the stovetop. Heat on medium-high until all of the wax is melted, about 20 minutes. Remove from heat. If using, add drops of essential oils according to preference and stir into wax. Meanwhile, place one wick vertically in the center of the jar. Your wick should be a few inches taller than your vessel. You can use chopsticks, clothespins or Popsicle sticks to keep the wick in place. To assemble: Carefully pour melted wax into jars, about 1⁄4 inch from the top. If using Popsicle sticks, remove them after the wax and jars have cooled. Set aside until candles are ready to use once the wax has hardened, 1 to 2 hours. Labour’s plans to align with EU standards would “severely constrain” the UK’s ability to cut costs for families, trade consultant Shanker Singham says. His stark intervention comes after a leak revealed Brussels’ demands to raid British fishing waters, bring back free movement for under-30s, and hand power to European judges in exchange for softer goods checks and a security pact. Mr Singham told The Sun: “The new Government’s mission is to increase household income and decrease household costs. Their success will depend on this. “The Government should therefore look at the EU reset in the wider context. They should ask whether any potential change negatively affects their ability to improve the UK’s regulatory system in goods and services to generate greater household income.” Mr Singham warned that EU rules could harm the UK’s position in trade blocs such as the CPTPP — membership of which is considered a major Brexit dividend. READ MORE ON BREXIT He said: “Dynamic alignment or an agreement that required it would make it difficult to do a deal with the US to avoid Trump tariffs, or even to remain a member of the CPTPP.” He suggested a better move would be to unilaterally recognise EU standards in areas such as food and medicine, while letting manufacturers make different products to export elsewhere. Labour insists its bid to reset ties will not mean having to rejoin the EU.BOSTON , Dec. 13, 2024 /PRNewswire/ -- The Board of Directors (the "Board") of The China Fund, Inc. Raw milk nearly killed her son. Now avian flu is bringing more attention to its riskSpecial counsel Jack Smith 's recent motions to dismiss two federal cases against Donald Trump have profoundly reshaped the president-elect's legal landscape, marking a significant shift in the former president's journey back to the White House. On Monday, Smith filed to drop all four felony charges related to Trump's efforts to overturn the 2020 presidential election and his alleged role in the January 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol. He also moved to dismiss the case regarding Trump's handling of classified documents found at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Palm Beach, Florida, after he left office in January 2021. The dismissal of these federal cases—a decision widely seen as inevitable—marks a turning point in Trump's legal saga. The weight of prosecution has now shifted squarely onto state-level cases, where the stakes remain high. Unlike federal cases, state prosecutions are not bound by Department of Justice policies, which prohibit the indictment of a sitting president. While the president-elect secured two major wins, the courtroom battles are far from over. Trump still faces legal hurdles in New York and Georgia. New York: Hush Money Case Trump's recent electoral victory has delayed any immediate consequences in his New York hush money case, in which he was already found guilty. On Friday, Judge Juan Merchan indefinitely postponed sentencing, initially rescheduled for the week after the election. This delay followed Trump's defeat of Vice President Kamala Harris in the 2024 presidential election on November 5. No new sentencing date has been set, but Merchan granted Trump's legal team until December 2 to file arguments for dismissal based on his election victory. Prosecutors have one week to respond. The judge also postponed ruling on Trump's motion to dismiss the case on the grounds of presidential immunity, which he had initially planned to address by November 19. If sentencing proceeds, Merchan will face the unprecedented decision of whether to impose a prison sentence—potentially up to four years—on a president-elect set to take office in January. New York: Business Fraud Allegations Trump is also embroiled in a civil fraud trial led by New York Attorney General Letitia James, who accuses him and the Trump Organization of inflating property values to secure favorable loans and insurance terms. Judge Arthur Engoron has already ruled that Trump committed fraud in some instances. However, the trial will determine penalties, which could include a $250 million fine and restrictions on Trump's business operations in New York. Trump has dismissed the case as politically motivated, framing it as part of a broader effort to undermine his 2024 presidential campaign. New York: Carroll Cases Trump owes nearly $90 million in judgments to writer E. Jean Carroll , who won two federal lawsuits against him. Juries found that Trump sexually abused Carroll in the 1990s and later defamed her when she publicly shared her story. Trump has appealed both verdicts. Georgia: Election Interference Case In Georgia, Trump faces charges stemming from alleged efforts to overturn the 2020 election results in the state. A Fulton County grand jury indicted Trump and 18 others in August 2023. Four codefendants have pleaded guilty under plea agreements, while Trump and the remaining defendants maintain their not-guilty pleas. Oral arguments are scheduled for December 6, 2024, but the case has encountered delays due to legal disputes, including efforts to disqualify Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis . A memorial for Dr Singh: Centre should be generous, says KPCC chief ShivakumarBristol Bears were shut out for the first time in eight years as they crashed to arguably their worst defeat of Pat Lam’s tenure, going down 38-0 to an inspired Sale Sharks. Having played some of the most sumptuous attacking rugby in the history of the Premiership on the road over the last two rounds of the league, Bristol looked unable to punch their way out of a paper bag against Sale. The Sharks have not won away from home this season, in fact they hadn’t even secured a bonus point, and yet they walked away with all five on Friday night after tries from Raffi Quirke, Tom Roebuck, Ben Curry and Tom O'Flaherty, and 15 points from the boot of Rob du Preez and a drop goal from George Ford. READ MORE: Bristol Bears 0-38 Sale Sharks LIVE: Full reaction from shock one-sided defeat Bristol were schooled by Sale who won every physical battle on the park, most notably the scrum, as the visitors dictated the pace of the game with some arch gamesmanship. In a battle of defence against attack, it was comprehensively the suffocating, double-hitting Sharks defence that dominated and successfully sucked all the energy and festive cheer out of Ashton Gate which might have been full with the biggest crowd of the season but was despairingly quiet, shaken by the early onslaught. England prop Ellis Genge withdrew from Bristol’s starting line-up after suffering a back spasm, while it was confirmed before kick-off that Bears fly-half AJ MacGinty faces four months out due to a knee injury and his young understudy Sam Worsley came up short in his head-to-head with England star Ford. Sale produced a lightning start, rocking Bristol when Quirke made a blistering break from 35 metres out to claim a superb solo touchdown that Du Preez converted. Sale then suffered an injury blow when centre Luke James departed the action after taking a knock to his shoulder, but it did not disrupt impressive early Sharks momentum as Du Preez kicked a penalty. Bristol could not get going, and their cause was not helped midway through the first-half when Harry Randall was yellow-carded for pulling back Sale hooker Luke Cowan-Dickie off the ball. Randall had barely left the pitch before Sharks extended their lead courtesy of impressive approach by their forwards that led to Ford freeing Roebuck with a long pass, and he applied a simple finish. Du Preez’s conversion made it 17-0, before Bristol suffered another injury setback when their top try-scorer Gabriel Ibitoye went off due to an apparent hamstring problem. Ford then underlined Sale’s dominance by landing a drop-goal as the visitors took a 20-point lead with them into the interval. Bristol could find no way into the contest, and after Du Preez kicked a second penalty, Curry intercepted home skipper Fitz Harding’s speculative pass to cross from close range, and Du Preez’s conversion saw Sale hit 30 points. He completed his penalty hat-trick midway through the second period, and all Bristol could concentrate on was trying to break their points duck in a game that had seen them emphatically outplayed. Sale had other ideas as they raced to a five-point maximum in thrilling fashion when O’Flaherty broke clear from just outside his own 22, then linked with Quirke before finishing in style. It said everything about a game when Sale took their chances magnificently, building on rock-solid foundations provided by an imperious defensive display. Bristol, though, were left to reflect on failing to score a point in a Premiership game for the first time since 2016. Bristol Bears: 15. Rich Lane, 14. Jack Bates, 13. Kalaveti Ravouvou, 12. Haiti’s armed-gang crisis just got worse — and even more complicated. A new report by the United Nations’ leading child welfare agency, UNICEF, says the number of children being recruited by the country’s violent gangs has soared by 70 percent in the last year. The unprecedented spike, registered between the second quarter of 2023 and this year, is yet another example of how children in Haiti, already kept out of school due to violence and rape by gangs, are increasingly being robbed of their childhood. “Children in Haiti are trapped in a vicious cycle — recruited into the very armed groups that are fueling their desperation, and the numbers are growing,” said UNICEF Executive Director Catherine Russell. “This unacceptable trend must be reversed by ensuring children’s safety and welfare are prioritized by all parties.” As many as half of all members of armed gangs in Haiti are children, the U.N. said. This revelations come as Haiti sees an escalation in violence by armed groups and rising vigilantism by residents desperate to protect their neighborhoods from being overtaken. A separate report by the Global Initiative Against Transnational Organized Crime says that as the country finds itself trapped between escalating violence and political paralysis, criminal groups are taking advantage of the institutional collapse and political vacuum to expand their territories. “In a political-institutional vacuum, the gangs have weaponized violence to exert pressure on the system,” the report said. Last week, dozens of suspected gang leaders were killed by police and residents during an attempt to invade the upscale community of Pétion-Ville in the capital. While police put the official death toll at 28, Haiti’s National Human Rights Defense Network said the actual number killed after police intercepted three vehicles on Tuesday was 90. Overall, at least 108 people were killed over a three-day span of violence involving gangs and communities fighting back. In one of the photos of the Tuesday incident, the charred body of a young child could be seen in the back of a vehicle. A 43-year-old resident in the Bourdon community of the capital, who spoke to the Miami Herald on condition of anonymity out of fear for his safety, said that among three armed gang members he saw running through the community fleeing police was a boy around 12 years old toting an automatic rifle and wearing flip flops. “A 12-year-old child with a huge Galil in his hands, that is sad,” said the man, who like most people in the Port-au-Prince neighborhood was awakened by the sounds of gunfire and screams as police attempted to capture the invaders. “These children are the most dangerous.” A father of three between the ages of 4 and 18, the man said he is still shaken by the site of the heavily armed child, who was lost inside the community and trying to find his way out. “Children should not be living these kinds of things,” he said, blaming the recruitment of children by armed gangs on the government, which has failed to protect children and for years ignored an epidemic of street kids who have presumably been recruited into the armed groups. “The state has not taken responsibility.” UNICEF says that the rise in child recruitment by armed groups has been fueled by escalating violence, pervasive poverty, lack of education and near collapse of critical infrastructure and social services in Haiti. “Children are often coerced into joining to support their families, or under threats to their safety,” the agency said in a statement. “Many are recruited after being separated from their caretakers, stripped of protection and survival options.” The recruitment of kids, as well as the rape of girls in Haiti by armed gangs, is a grave violation of children’s rights, said UNICEF, calling on Haitian authorities to prioritize the protection of children. In Port-au-Prince, 1.2 million children live under the threat of armed violence. An estimated 25 percent of the more than 703,000 internally displaced people — of whom 365,000 are children — are currently in the city living under dire conditions and exposed to multiple threats. “Children in many parts of Haiti are subjected to atrocities no child should ever have to experience, leaving them with psychological and emotional scars that might haunt them for a lifetime,” Russell said. “Chaos and horror have become part of daily life.”

NoneThe government’s budget deficit has been set to grow even larger due to falling tax revenue and higher spending. The Deloitte Access Economics’ half-yearly budget monitor report revealed the economy has been growing at the slowest annual rate since the 1990s (excluding COVID). Economic growth has been crushed in the face of sticky inflation, high interest rates, and a weak global outlook. According to Deloitte, the country's economic growth has been forecast to remain weak, with the federal budget set to worsen significantly. Projections have now shown an underlying cash deficit of $33.5 billion for the 2024-25 financial year, a sharp increase from the Treasury’s forecast of $28.3 billion in May. The deterioration represents a reversal of fortunes after the Albanese government delivered a $15.8 billion surplus in 2023-24. "Outside of a crisis... This is the most significant deterioration in the budget bottom line that we’ve seen," Deloitte Access Economics partner Stephen Smith told Sky News on Monday. "The last couple of years, we’ve seen surpluses but what this financial year is showing us is that those last two years were really built on good luck rather than good management." Mr Smith argued Australia needed better fiscal policy, economic and tax reform to get the budget into a more sustainable position. A key driver of the worsening fiscal outlook has been a decline in company tax revenue, with slower economic growth expected to reduce corporate profits. The government’s reliance on commodity prices, particularly the iron ore price, which has dropped by 30 per cent this year, has also contributed to the budget’s deterioration. Deloitte warned the previous two years of surpluses were largely driven by high commodity prices, which have now begun receding. "High commodity prices are great when they happen, but when they don’t, you revert back to the difference between underlying spending and underlying revenue," Mr Smith said. This turn of events puts increased pressure on Treasurer Jim Chalmers and the Albanese government as they seek to manage the economic narrative. Mr Chalmers has blamed the “inflation challenge” on international events such as the Ukraine War and Middle East conflict which have created global uncertainty. The government's ability to explain the deteriorating fiscal situation will be crucial ahead of the upcoming federal election. The Treasurer worked to prepare the public for the shift in fiscal fortunes in his response to the Deloitte report. “We’ve warned for some time that pressures on the budget are building, not easing, and this is consistent with that,” he said on Monday. "Our budget position in the mid-year update will be a bit weaker than what Treasury forecast in May, but still much stronger than what we inherited. "There's still a lot of work ahead of us to clean up the mess we inherited." Liberal Senator Andrew Bragg argued the government's deficit projections would likely lead to tax increases to fund the upcoming deficits. “It's a very bad economic legacy for Dr Chalmers,” Mr Bragg told Sky News on Tuesday. The government's mid-year economic update (MYEFO) in December will offer a glimpse into the budget figures. Labor may or may not deliver a pre-election budget – depending on economic results – before voters head to the polls some time before May.

Most Americans blame insurance profits and denials alongside the killer in UHC CEO death, poll finds WASHINGTON (AP) — Most Americans believe health insurance profits and coverage denials share responsibility for the killing of UnitedHealthcare’s CEO — although not as much as the person who pulled the trigger. So says a new poll from NORC at the University of Chicago. It finds that about 8 in 10 Americans say that the person who committed the killing has “a great deal” or “a moderate amount” of responsibility for the Dec. 4 shooting of Brian Thompson. The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development said that federally required tallies taken across the country in January found that more than 770,000 people were counted as homeless. That increase comes on top of a 12% increase in 2023, which HUD blamed on soaring rents and the end of pandemic assistance. Among the most concerning trends was a nearly 40% rise in family homelessness. An online debate over foreign workers in tech shows tensions in Trump's political coalition WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. Court rules Georgia lawmakers can subpoena Fani Willis for information related to her Trump case ATLANTA (AP) — A judge has ruled that the Georgia state Senate can subpoena Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis. It's part of a inquiry into whether Willis has engaged in misconduct during her prosecution of President-elect Donald Trump. But Fulton County Superior Court Judge Shukura Ingram is giving Willis the chance to contest whether lawmakers’ demands are overly broad before Willis responds. A Republican-led committee was formed earlier this year and sent subpoenas to Willis in August seeking to compel her to testify during its September meeting and to produce scores of documents. Willis argued that the committee didn’t have the power to subpoena her. In states that ban abortion, social safety net programs often fail families MEMPHIS, Tenn. ORLANDO, Fla. — It was a season of Iowa State comebacks. And fittingly, that's how it ended for the Cyclones. Game MVP Rocco Becht scored from a yard out on fourth-and-goal with 56 seconds remaining and No. 18 Iowa State capped the best season in school history by rallying past No. 15 Miami 42-41 in the Pop-Tarts Bowl on Saturday. Becht finished with 270 passing yards and three touchdowns for Iowa State (11-2), a program that entered this season — the 133rd year of Cyclone football — never having won more than nine games in a year. “If you look at this team, it’s really who they’ve been all year,” coach Matt Campbell said. The win marked the fourth time in 2024 that Iowa State got a winning score with less than two minutes remaining. For this one, the Cyclones rallied from a 10-point deficit in the second half — with Miami quarterback Cam Ward watching after a record-setting first half — to get win No. 11. Carson Hansen rushed for a pair of touchdowns for Iowa State. And as the MVP, Becht got the honor of choosing which flavor Pop-Tart was to be sacrificed in a giant toaster. “There's only one,” Becht said. “Cinnamon roll.” Ward passed for three touchdowns in his final college game, while Damien Martinez rushed for a career-high 179 yards for Miami (10-3), which dropped its sixth straight bowl game and lost three of four games to end the season — those three losses by a combined 10 points. "Disappointed that we couldn't pull out a victory," Miami coach Mario Cristobal said. “These guys have always fought and always competed and this was no exception. ... It's painful. It's as painful as it gets when you don't win. But there's a lot to build on.” NEBRASKA 20, BOSTON COLLEGE 15: Dylan Raiola passed for 228 yards and a touchdown as Nebraska built an 18-point lead through three quarters and hung on for its first bowl victory since 2015. Raiola hit Emmett Johnson with a 13-yard TD pass on fourth down with 3:02 remaining in the third quarter for a 20-2 edge and the Cornhuskers (7-6) held on for the win at Yankee Stadium. Raiola completed 23 of 31 passes in front of a sizable Nebraska crowd that celebrated the team's first bowl win since topping UCLA in the 2015 Foster Farms Bowl and first winning season since 2016. Raiola completed passes to 10 receivers, including Jahmal Banks, who finished with four receptions for 79 yards. Grayson James finished 25 of 40 for 296 yards as Boston College (7-6). ARIZONA BOWL MIAMI (OHIO) 43, COLORADO STATE 17: Kevin Davis had a career-high 148 yards rushing and two touchdowns on just nine carries, and Jordan Brunson also ran for two TDs to help Miami (Ohio) wrapped the season at 9-5 by beating Colorado State (8-5) in Tucson, Ariz. Davis scored on a 4-yard run with 12:35 left in the third quarter, Matt Salopek forced a fumble that was recovered by Silas Walters and quarterback Brett Gabbert's first rushing touchdown of the season — a 10-yard scramble that capped a 47-yard drive — made it 22-3 about 2 minutes later. UCONN 27, NORTH CAROLINA 14: Joe Fagnano threw for 151 yards and two touchdowns to help the Huskies (9-4) beat the Tar Heels (6-7) at Fenway Park, embarrassing incoming coach Bill Belichick's new team in his old backyard. Mel Brown rushed for 96 yards for UConn and Skyler Bell caught three passes for 77 yards, including a 38-yard touchdown that gave the Huskies a 10-0 first-quarter lead. Chris Culliver returned the ensuing kickoff 95 yards for a touchdown, but that would be Carolina's only production in the first half. TCU 34, LOUISIANA 3: Josh Hoover passed for four touchdowns as the Horned Frogs (9-4) routed the Ragin' Cajuns (10-4) in Albuquerque. Hoover was 20 for 32 for 252 yards with an interception. Eric McAlister had eight catches for 87 yards and a TD for the Horned Frogs. TCU's defense also had a solid day, holding Louisiana-Lafayette to 209 yards, including 61 on the game's final possession. LATE FRIDAY LAS VEGAS BOWL USC 35, TEXAS A&M 31: Jayden Maiava threw a 7-yard touchdown pass to tight end Kyle Ford with eight seconds left to give Southern California the victory over Texas A&M (8-5) in the Las Vegas Bowl. A graduate of Liberty High School in nearby Henderson and a transfer from UNLV, Maiava helped the Trojans (7-6) overcome a 17-point deficit. ENO AND PURSUIT OF ACCOUNTABILITYIntroduction Last week, we dealt with the challenges of implementing value-based leadership in Africa and the role of Pan-Africanism and regional co-operation, followed by discussion of Nigeria as a model for Value-Based Leadership in Africa and opportunity for such leadership. Today we shall conclude on the Challenges And Opportunities For Value-Based Leadership In Africa. Enjoy. Challenges and opportunities for value-based leadership in Africa (continues). Nigeria’s “Missing Billions” In Nigeria, Africa’s largest economy, corruption remains a significant obstacle to development. A glaring example of this is the $20 billion oil revenue scandal that rocked the country in 2014. The then-Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, raised alarm about $20 billion in oil revenue that was unaccounted for by the state-run Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC). The scandal highlighted how deeply corruption runs in Nigeria’s oil sector. A critical industry that should be driving national development but has instead been a major source of government mismanagement and graft. The consequences of such corruption are devastating. Despite Nigeria being one of the world’s largest oil producers, over 90 million Nigerians still live below the poverty line as of 2024. Funds that could have been invested in infrastructure, healthcare, and education have been siphoned off by a small elite, leaving the majority of the population in poverty. South Africa’s state capture crisis South Africa, another major player on the continent, has also struggled with high-level corruption, particularly during the presidency of Jacob Zuma. The term “state capture” became synonymous with the Zuma era, referring to the undue influence of private business interests, specifically the Gupta family, over government decisions, BBC News. (2019). State capture: Zuma, the Guptas, and the sale of South Africa. BBC News. https://www.bbc.com/news/world-africa-8980964 Accessed on the 20th of October, 2024.). Between 2009 and 2018, South Africa witnessed the hollowing out of state institutions, including the South African Revenue Service (SARS) and state-owned enterprises like Eskom and Transnet, as the Zuma administration prioritised the interests of the Guptas over the public good (ibid). This period of state capture significantly damaged South Africa’s economy. Eskom, the country’s national electricity provider, was severely compromised, leading to rolling blackouts (referred to as “load-shedding”) that continue to plague the country to this day (IEA World. (2023). South Africa’s Gendered Electricity Crisis. IEA World. https://www.iea-world.org/south-africas-gendered-electricity-crisis/ Accessed on the 20th of October, 2024.). South Africa’s growth rate during the Zuma years stagnated, and unemployment, particularly among the youth, skyrocketed, exacerbating inequality in the nation. The effects of state capture on public trust were profound, with many South Africans losing faith in their political leaders and institutions. 2. Political Instability and Authoritarianism: Barrier to ethical leadership Another significant challenge to value-based leadership in Africa is the prevalence of political instability and authoritarian regimes. In many African countries, democratic processes are undermined by leaders who cling to power through authoritarian means, stifling dissent, and undermining the rule of law. This often leads to political crises, civil unrest, and coups, all of which create an environment in which value-based leadership cannot thrive. Zimbabwe’s long-running leadership crisis Zimbabwe under Robert Mugabe offers a case study in how authoritarian leadership can erode national institutions and stifle progress. Mugabe, who ruled Zimbabwe for 37 years, consolidated power through a combination of political repression, economic mismanagement, and cronyism. While Zimbabwe was once known as the breadbasket of Africa, Mugabe’s policies such as the controversial land reform program that displaced white farmers without a sustainable plan for agricultural productivity led to widespread food shortages, hyperinflation, and economic collapse. By 2008, Zimbabwe’s inflation rate had reached an astronomical 89.7 sextillion percent per month (Cato Institute. (2017). Zimbabwe Hyperinflates Again: Entering the Record Books for the Second Time in Less Than a Decade. Cato Institute. Accessed on the 20th of October, 2024.), effectively destroying the value of the national currency and pushing millions into poverty (ibid). The lack of value-based leadership during Mugabe’s reign decimated public trust in government and left Zimbabwe’s institutions in tatters. Although Mugabe was eventually forced out of power in a military coup in 2017 (ibid), his legacy of authoritarianism continues to hinder the country’s development. Mali and the rise of coups Political instability remains a persistent challenge in several African nations, particularly in West Africa. Mali has experienced multiple coups in recent years, most recently in 2021, when the military ousted the transitional government. The root causes of these coups are often tied to widespread dissatisfaction with corrupt and ineffective civilian governments. However, the frequent disruptions to the democratic process create a vicious cycle: coups lead to further instability, which undermines any attempts to build strong, value-based governance structures. In Mali, the absence of stable, ethical leadership has also contributed to the rise of extremist groups in the northern regions of the country. The lack of trust in government has created a power vacuum, allowing militant groups to gain ground and further destabilize the region. The situation in Mali is emblematic of the broader challenges facing many African nations, where the failure of leadership has opened the door to conflict, poverty, and underdevelopment. 3. Ethnic and Tribal Divisions: Impediments to Unity and Inclusive Leadership In many African countries, leadership is further complicated by ethnic and tribal divisions, which can fuel conflict and undermine national unity. Leaders who prioritize the interests of their ethnic or tribal group over the broader national interest perpetuate inequality and division, making it difficult to implement value-based leadership that serves the whole population. Kenya’s ethnic politics Kenya provides a prime example of how ethnic divisions can be weaponized in the political arena. Since independence, Kenya’s politics have been heavily influenced by ethnic allegiances, with major political parties often representing specific ethnic groups rather than national interests. This was starkly evident during the 2007–2008 post-election violence, in which more than 1,100 people were killed and 600,000 displaced. The violence erupted after disputed election results that many believed were manipulated along ethnic lines, pitting communities against each other. Although the situation has improved somewhat in recent years, ethnic tensions continue to influence Kenyan politics. In a country where leaders often play to their ethnic base to secure power, value-based leadership which prioritizes inclusivity and national unity remains a challenge. As Kenya prepares for future elections, the question of whether the country can move beyond ethnic politics and embrace leadership that serves all Kenyans remains an open one. South Sudan’s civil war The case of South Sudan, the world’s youngest nation, is another illustration of how ethnic divisions can thwart value-based leadership. South Sudan gained independence from Sudan in 2011, but by 2013, it was engulfed in a brutal civil war, largely along ethnic lines, between forces loyal to President Salva Kiir and those aligned with former Vice President Riek Machar. The war, which has left 400,000 dead and displaced millions, has its roots in longstanding ethnic rivalries between the Dinka and Nuer communities. The conflict in South Sudan is a tragic reminder of the consequences of leadership that prioritizes ethnic loyalty over national unity. For value-based leadership to take hold in South Sudan, leaders must work toward reconciliation and inclusivity, ensuring that all ethnic groups feel represented in the national government. Without this shift, the country risks continued division and underdevelopment. 4. Weak Institutions and Lack of Accountability: A Systemic Issue Many African nations struggle with weak institutions that lack the capacity to hold leaders accountable for their actions. In countries where the rule of law is fragile and institutions like the judiciary, law enforcement, and anti-corruption bodies are compromised, it becomes difficult to enforce value-based leadership. Leaders who are not held accountable for corruption, human rights abuses, or mismanagement can continue to act with impunity, perpetuating a cycle of bad governance. Guinea’s fragile democracy In Guinea, weak institutions have allowed leaders to manipulate the constitution for their benefit, undermining democratic norms. In 2020, President Alpha Condé pushed through a controversial constitutional change that allowed him to run for a third term, despite widespread protests. Condé’s actions sparked unrest and were widely seen as a betrayal of Guinea’s fragile democracy. Although he was eventually deposed in a coup in 2021, the damage done to Guinea’s institutions will take years to repair. The lack of strong, independent institutions in Guinea, as in many other African countries, makes it difficult to implement value-based leadership. Without effective checks and balances, leaders can subvert the democratic process to remain in power, often at the expense of the people. Way Forward: Blueprint for embedding value-based leadership in Africa As Africa marches toward a new era of global influence and economic growth, it is critical to recognize that sustainable progress will only come through value-based leadership. This leadership must be rooted in integrity, service, accountability, and an unwavering commitment to the well-being of the people. While challenges such as corruption, political instability, and ethnic divisions continue to undermine governance across the continent, the road to reform is not impossible. Through strategic interventions, Africa can cultivate a generation of leaders who will prioritize the public good over personal gain and bring about transformative change. Below is a blueprint for how this can be achieved. 1. Strengthening Institutions: Building the Pillars of Accountability The cornerstone of value-based leadership is the existence of strong, independent institutions that can hold leaders accountable. In many African nations, institutions such as electoral commissions, anti-corruption agencies, and the judiciary are compromised by political interference, leaving little room for ethical leadership to thrive. To reverse this trend, there must be a renewed focus on institutional reform. Electoral commissions need to be truly independent and transparent, ensuring that elections are free and fair. In countries like Nigeria, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has made strides, but much more needs to be done to safeguard the integrity of elections. Technological solutions such as real-time results transmission and biometric voter identification can help reduce electoral fraud, giving citizens confidence in the democratic process. Similarly, anti-corruption agencies must be empowered to investigate and prosecute corruption at all levels, without fear of political backlash. Nigeria’s Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and South Africa’s National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) are examples of institutions that can play a pivotal role in restoring trust in governance, provided they operate with full autonomy and sufficient resources. Moreover, the establishment of robust whistleblower protection laws will encourage citizens to expose corruption without fear of retribution, creating a culture of transparency and accountability. Judicial independence is equally vital. For value-based leadership to flourish, the courts must be free from political control, allowing them to uphold the rule of law impartially. African governments need to ensure that judicial appointments are based on merit and shielded from political influence, so that courts can act as impartial defenders of justice and hold leaders accountable when they overstep their bounds. 2. Investing in Leadership Education: Cultivating the Next Generation of African Leaders Africa’s future rests in the hands of its young population. With more than 60% of the continent’s people under the age of 25, it is imperative to invest in leadership education that promotes values like integrity, service, and ethical decision-making. The next generation of African leaders must be equipped with the tools and knowledge needed to navigate the complexities of governance with a strong moral compass. One critical area for reform is the education system. Leadership development should be integrated into school curricula, from primary education to university levels. This is not merely about teaching leadership theory but also about creating opportunities for students to practice leadership through community service, debate clubs, and student governance roles. Schools must foster a mindset of public service and accountability, shaping young minds to understand that true leadership is about making a positive impact on society. (To be continued). Thought for the week Ultimately, leadership is not about glorious crowning acts. It’s about keeping your team focused on a goal and motivated to do their best to achieve it, especially when the stakes are high and the consequences really matter. It is about laying the groundwork for others’ success, and then standing back and letting them shine – Chris Hadfield. Only the coldest of hearts won’t empathize with Michael Andretti, who has been sidelined from his namesake motorsports organization and won’t have any role with the the Formula 1 program he spent the last four years desperately trying to launch. His effort to get a program partnered with General Motors into F1 was approved last week, roughly a month after Andretti stepped aside from leading his race teams. F1’s decision to expand its grid for Cadillac F1 came amidst a federal antitrust investigation into why Liberty Media refused to admit Andretti Global as an 11th team — and after Andretti partners Dan Towriss and Mark Walter took controlling interest of the effort. “The Cadillac F1 Team is made up of a strong group of people that have worked tirelessly to build an American works team,” Andretti posted on social media. “I’m very proud of the hard work they have put in and congratulate all involved on this momentous next step. I will be cheering for you!” While he will have no role with the F1 team, it is unclear what his regular involvement will be with his IndyCar team. His famous father, 1978 F1 champion Mario Andretti, will be on the board of the F1 team and an ambassador. What changed F1’s position on Andretti — an application it basically mocked in its January denial — is not known. Few have said much beyond noting GM’s increased commitment to take a larger role beyond engine supplier. Mohammed Ben Sulayem, the president of F1’s governing body, had championed the GM bid from the start and Andretti’s application was the only one of seven to receive approval from the FIA. In an interview with The Associated Press, he called F1’s decision to finally allow the GM team a spot in the sport “a win for all of motorsports” but also sympathized with Michael Andretti. “I feel he should be proud because he’s the founder who started this thing with his partners,” Ben Sulayem said. “We did the proper due process, we never favored anyone, and it is only because his application ticked all the boxes that the FIA approved it. Michael is a lovely person and I do not feel this was personal against Michael Andretti. “The other teams? For them, it was about the money. They don’t want the money to go from split between 10 teams to split between 11 teams,” he added. “But it was only a matter of time before General Motors was going to be approved and I feel it is incorrect to say it happened because Michael stepped aside. What did Michael do? Why would people not want him? Because he spoke publicly? He didn’t break any rules. He didn’t abuse anyone. If people want to see it as personal, it is up to them. He doesn’t annoy me.” What likely did annoy F1 and Liberty Media, its commercial rights holder, was the Justice Department investigation. Liberty announced it was under investigation this summer, not long after Mario Andretti visited Washington to discuss the F1 snub with lawmakers. The FBI was allegedly at last month’s Las Vegas Grand Prix and Ben Sulayem confirmed to AP he was interviewed by federal investigators. “It is the department that protects the interest of the United States and the FIA has nothing to hide,” Ben Sulayem said. “I was proud to speak to them and they were very polite and understanding. I wanted this to be cleared: I wanted GM in F1 because it is good for business.” F1 currently has just one American team, owned by California businessman Gene Haas, despite a series-high three races in the United States. Should the Cadillac F1 team make it to the grid in 2026 as scheduled, there will be two American teams and Ford will officially join Red Bull that season as a technical partner. This Andretti-less F1 effort will be led by TWG Global, the investment company founded by Walter, who as CEO of Guggenheim Partners is the controlling owner of the Los Angeles Dodgers and Premier League club Chelsea, and Towriss, who became involved in motorsports initially as a sponsor for Andretti and took an ownership role in Andretti Global in 2022. Towriss is now the majority owner of the Andretti race teams and work on the F1 team will continue in Andretti’s Indiana shop, its recently opened satellite factory in Silverstone and GM’s facilities in North Carolina and Michigan. Towriss is the CEO of TWG Global’s motorsports arm. There is no indication who the drivers will be for the F1 team, although Valtteri Bottas indicated last weekend he’d like to be considered and the original Andretti effort targeted current IndyCar driver Colton Herta, who is sponsored by Towriss’ company, Gainbridge. Israel strikes Houthi rebels in Yemen's capital while the WHO chief says he was meters away JERUSALEM (AP) — A new round of Israeli airstrikes in Yemen has targeted the Houthi rebel-held capital of Sanaa and multiple ports. The World Health Organization’s director-general said Thursday's bombardment took place just “meters away” as he was about to board a flight in Sanaa. He says a crew member was hurt. The strikes followed several days of Houthi attacks and launches setting off sirens in Israel. Israel's military says it attacked infrastructure used by the Houthis at the airport in Sanaa, power stations and ports. The Israeli military later said it wasn’t aware that the WHO chief was at the location in Yemen. At least three people were reported killed and dozens injured in the Sanaa airport strike. An uneasy calm settles over Syrian city of Homs after outbreak of sectarian violence HOMS, Syria (AP) — Syria’s new security forces checked IDs and searched cars in the central city of Homs a day after protests by members of the Alawite minority erupted in gunfire and stirred fears that the country’s fragile peace could break down. A tense calm prevailed Thursday after checkpoints were set up throughout the country’s third-largest city, which has a mixed population of Sunni and Shia Muslims, Alawites and Christians. The security forces are controlled by the former insurgent group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, which led the charge that unseated former President Bashar Assad. The US says it pushed retraction of a famine warning for north Gaza. Aid groups express concern. WASHINGTON (AP) — U.S. officials say they asked for — and got — the retraction of an independent monitor's warning of imminent famine in north Gaza. The internationally Famine Early Warning System Network issued the warning this week. The new report had warned that starvation deaths in north Gaza could reach famine levels as soon as next month. It cited what it called Israel's “near-total blockade” of food and water. The U.S. ambassador to Israel, Jacob Lew, criticized the finding as inaccurate and irresponsible. The U.S. Agency for International Development, which funds the famine-monitoring group, told the AP it had asked for and gotten the report's retraction. USAID officials tell The Associated Press that it had asked the group for greater review of discrepancies in some of the data. Powerful thunderstorms rumble across Texas, delaying holiday travel DALLAS (AP) — Severe thunderstorms are firing up in parts of Texas and could trigger high winds, hail and potential tornadoes. More than 100 flights were delayed and dozens more were canceled Thursday at airports in Dallas and Houston. The National Weather Service says the greatest weather risk stretched from just east of Dallas, and between Houston and portions of southern Arkansas and western Louisiana. The risk includes the possibility of tornadoes, wind gusts between 60 and 80 miles per hour and large hail. The National Weather Service issued a tornado watch for several counties in southeast Texas, including the Houston area. Trump has pressed for voting changes. GOP majorities in Congress will try to make that happen ATLANTA (AP) — Republicans in Congress plan to move quickly in their effort to overhaul the nation’s voting procedures, seeing an opportunity with control of the White House and both chambers of Congress. They want to push through long-sought changes such as voter ID and proof-of-citizenship requirements. They say the measures are needed to restore public confidence in elections. That's after an erosion of trust that Democrats note has been fueled by false claims from Donald Trump and his allies of widespread fraud in the 2020 election. Democrats say they are willing to work with the GOP but want any changes to make it easier, not harder, to vote. Americans are exhausted by political news. TV ratings and a new AP-NORC poll show they're tuning out NEW YORK (AP) — A lot of Americans, after an intense presidential election campaign, are looking for a break in political news. That's evident in cable television news ratings and a poll from The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research. The poll found nearly two-thirds of Americans saying they've found the need recently to cut down on their consumption of political and government news. That's particularly true among Democrats following President-elect Donald Trump's victory, although a significant number of Republicans and independents feel the same way. Cable networks MSNBC and CNN are really seeing a slump. That's also happened in years past for networks that particularly appeal to supporters of one candidate. Aviation experts say Russia's air defense fire likely caused Azerbaijan plane crash as nation mourns Aviation experts say that Russian air defense fire was likely responsible for the Azerbaijani plane crash the day before that killed 38 people and left all 29 survivors injured. Azerbaijan is observing a nationwide day of mourning on Thursday for the victims of the crash. Azerbaijan Airlines’ Embraer 190 was en route from Azerbaijan’s capital of Baku to the Russian city of Grozny in the North Caucasus on Wednesday when it was diverted for reasons yet unclear and crashed while making an attempt to land in Aktau in Kazakhstan. Cellphone footage circulating online appeared to show the aircraft making a steep descent before smashing into the ground in a fireball. Ukraine's military intelligence says North Korean troops are suffering heavy battlefield losses KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — Ukraine's military intelligence says North Korean troops are suffering heavy losses in Russia's Kursk region and face logistical difficulties as a result of Ukrainian attacks. The intelligence agency said Thursday that Ukrainian strikes near Novoivanovka inflicted heavy casualties on North Korean units. Ukraine's president said earlier this week that 3,000 North Korean troops have been killed and wounded in the fighting in the Kursk region. It marked the first significant estimate by Ukraine of North Korean casualties several weeks after Kyiv announced that North Korea had sent 10,000 to 12,000 troops to Russia to help it in the almost 3-year war. Ex-Sen. Bob Menendez, citing 'emotional toll,' seeks sentencing delay in wake of wife's trial NEW YORK (AP) — Former U.S. Sen. Bob Menendez is asking a federal judge to delay his end-of-January sentencing on bribery charges, saying his family would suffer a “tremendous emotional toll” if the New Jersey Democrat was sentenced during his wife's trial. His lawyers told Judge Sidney H. Stein in a letter that Nadine Menendez would face a jury that might find it impossible not to hear about her husband's sentencing if it occurred eight days into her trial. The 70-year-old Menendez was convicted in July of 16 charges, including bribery. His wife, whose trial was postponed when she was diagnosed with breast cancer, faces much of the same evidence as her husband. How the stock market defied expectations again this year, by the numbers NEW YORK (AP) — What a wonderful year 2024 has been for investors. U.S. stocks ripped higher and carried the S&P 500 to records as the economy kept growing and the Federal Reserve began cutting interest rates. The benchmark index posted its first back-to-back annual gains of more than 20% since 1998. The year featured many familiar winners, such as Big Tech, which got even bigger as their stock prices kept growing. But it wasn’t just Apple, Nvidia and the like. Bitcoin and gold surged and “Roaring Kitty” reappeared to briefly reignite the meme stock craze.CONAKRY, Guinea (AP) — Chaos erupted at a soccer game in Guinea after fans protested a referee’s call and thousands of panicked spectators tried to flee the stadium, leaving at least 56 people dead in the West African nation, officials and witnesses said Monday. Amid the confusion, security forces used tear gas, local news website Media Guinea reported. Many of the dead were crushed as they tried to escape through the stadium gates, a journalist covering the game for a local sports website told The Associated Press. “The gates, that’s where the stampede happened,” said Cissé Lancine, who got away by climbing over one of the stadium walls. “I was saved because I did not rush towards the exit." The world's latest sports crowd disaster unfurled Sunday in the second-largest city in a military-run nation where information is sparse and government-controlled at the best of times. It was not immediately clear how much the death toll could grow. Lancine said between 20,000 and 30,000 people were present at the Third of April stadium to watch the local Labe and Nzerekore teams compete in the final of the first national tournament honoring military leader Mamadi Doumbouya. Checkpoints were set up Monday throughout Nzerekore, a city of about 200,000 that was at a standstill as soldiers guarded the hospital where victims were being treated. Most shops were closed. Video, apparently from the scene, showed shouting fans protesting the refereeing. People ran as they tried to escape the stadium, many of them jumping the high fence. “Supporters threw stones. This is why the security services used tear gas,” reported Media Guinea, which also wrote that several of the dead were children and some of the injured were in critical condition. The footage showed people lying on the floor of a hospital as members of a crowd helped the wounded. Enock Loua, a resident of Nzerekore, learned over the phone that his niece Aline Olivier had been killed. "We have a hard time realizing what happened to us, it is as if the sky has fallen on our heads,” Loua told The Associated Press. Authorities are trying to establish who was responsible, Prime Minister Amadou Oury Bahsaid on national television. The National Alliance for Alternation and Democracy opposition coalition said the tournament was organized to drum up support for Doumbouya's “illegal and inappropriate” political ambitions. Doumbouya, who ousted then-President Alpha Conde in 2021 , has been eyeing a possible run for the presidential election, for which the date has not been set. The transition charter put in place by his own regime does not allow him to run. Guinea is one of a number of West African countries — including Mali, Niger and Burkina Faso — where the military has taken power and delayed a return to civilian rule. Doumbouya said he was preventing the country from slipping into chaos and chastised the previous government for broken promises. He has, however, been criticized for not meeting the expectations that he raised. The – the brand's sixth and newest cruise ship – is on its maiden voyage that hit the high seas on December 21, 2024. And with that, around 4,000 guests are experiencing not only a state-of-the-art vessel but one that emphasizes immersion within Disney’s historic franchises. It translates some of the most iconic theme park attractions from Disneyland and Disney World to a cruise ship in a way that puts you in the middle of the action. Case in point: The Haunted Mansion is one of the most beloved attractions Disney has ever created, so much so that there are three of them: the original at , , and . So, when tasked with bringing that icon to the Disney Treasure, the Disney Imagineers chose to innovate and create a state-of-the-art experience in the form of the Haunted Mansion Parlor. It features countless eerie portraits, and you might even get a glimpse of the ‘hitchhiking ghosts,’ but centered in the space is a Ghost Fish Aquarium – yes, as cool as it sounds and looks in the images above and below. And while the parlor hints it’s a bar, it’s also a full-fledged attraction. TechRadar spoke with Daniel Joseph, Executive Illusions & Effects for Walt Disney Imagineering, to unpack how the Haunted Mansion Parlor came to be. The Parlor took about five years from concept to rollout aboard the Treasure. But it took many years before that, as the Ghost Fish Aquarium originally debuted as an idea in the 1965 Disneyland Ten-centennial Special. created it and was responsible for many other elements in Disneyland’s Haunted Mansion. It didn’t necessarily come together at the time as “they didn’t really find a proper method, technique, or technology to do it because it really needed to look real,” explained Joseph. “So fast forward 50 years or so to when we’re brainstorming this all, it was kind of the perfect storm.” Not only did a Ghost Fish Aquarium fit the next chapter of the Haunted Mansion, but Joseph and the team at Imagineering “discovered a new technique and used some new technologies that are out there to make it happen.” It not only pays homage to Rolly Crump, but Disney debuted a new kind of illusion on the ship. Like any magician, Joseph held the tech powering it close but revealed, “There’s nothing like this in any land-based themed park that’s out there. It's really, from a technology standpoint, only visible in our Mansion Parlor.” To create the effect of the Ghost Fish Aquarium, which has skeletons of fish swimming around, Joseph explained, “Using different material sciences and things like that, learning how light and liquid kind of refract and work together, was a big breakthrough in creating the illusion.” So yes, there is liquid inside the Ghost Fish Aquarium, but much like Disney Imagineering’s most epic creations, you won’t see the tech or how it’s done, regardless of where you are. “We can’t control guests' point of view like we do in the Haunted Mansion, where we’re tipping you in different directions to look at the scenery and our different scenes, and also you're at a certain distance and all that stuff it, whereas in the Haunted Mansion parlor, you can go in and go right up to the stuff, it's kind of close up magic,” explained Joseph. With the Ghost Fish Aquarium, he noted, “You'll literally probably have little kids pushing their noses up to it and looking up and down, and just as I did as a kid, riding the mansion and turning my head around to see how everything worked.” So one of the most significant criteria to hit was that you can’t see the tech behind it and that “they can be scrutinized in the round.” Simply, “they just see kind of the magic and the spirited results of it.” Like the portraits in the Haunted Mansion’s stretching room, there are ‘change portraits’ in the Haunted Mansion Parlor. Joseph noted you can go right up to them and “see brush strokes and see how the texture and the light bounce off the gesso and has a reflection and a glossiness and a matte in some other areas, yet these things move.” Ultimately, this “kind of close-up magic and everything is another thing we haven't gotten to do anywhere else in the world because we haven’t had to have things work that close up.” The Haunted Mansion Parlor allowed the Imagineering team to try many different things, something that Joseph described as a dream but also encouraging for future projects. “As far as the techniques we were able to come up with and invent for this parlor, it’s really things that we get to build upon for other things going forward,” explained Joseph. Still, most importantly, he and the eight others who were on the project from inception to its unveiling were all huge Haunted Mansion fans and “huge Imagineering history fans,” so that passion is “ “imbued in the space and the richness of it all.” The bar is also home to secrets, mainly the mirror behind it. As the attraction runs through its eight chapters, you'll see folks like Madame Leota potentially appear, and you might do a double take. These reflections aren’t CGI, and that's by design. “We absolutely shied away from using any CGI to do that," said Joseph, "because, as you know, the mansion opened in 1969 [and] it's a very analog show, which is what all of us love about it, really.’ So rather than use a computer, Joseph and his team opted for a ‘really high ISO camera’ operating at a very high resolution and filmed the animatronics from Haunted Mansion at Disneyland. “We got like footage, like has never been gotten before, of these amazing audio-animatronics, and then, of course, added in post, a little bit of glow around it. But the figures from the attraction are what you see in that mirror, and they're so hyper, high resolution, hyper-real,” explained Joseph. And that all adds to the richness, attention to detail, and immersion the Haunted Mansion Parlor provides. Sure, most Disney rides don’t have a built-in bar, but the Parlor is as much a true Disney attraction as a ride, and it’s one where you get to pick your seat. It’s also one that Joseph, the wider Imagineering team, and Disney are immensely proud of – and one that I desperately want to see IRL. Still, Joseph hinted there's more to come: “Just a couple of weeks ago, we all said, this is the beginning of this level of richness and storytelling of a land-based attraction on a Disney Ship. So we’re hoping that this is the start of more things like this and really bridging out our stories even further into things we’ve never imagined before.” I certainly can’t wait.

Trump warns there will be ‘all hell to pay’ if hostages aren’t released by Jan. 20As Victoria's ever-divided Liberal opposition meets to determine the future of the party, three contenders have put their hands up to replace embattled leader John Pesutto. or signup to continue reading Police spokesman Brad Battin, first-term MP Jess Wilson and Mornington MP Chris Crewther have announced their candidacy if a motion to challenge Mr Pesutto is successful. Before that takes place, the party must determine whether absent MPs can vote, which will be followed by a second vote on whether to return banished colleague Moira Deeming to the fold. After this, a spill motion is expected to be raised. Former party leader Michael O'Brien told reporters he would rather be at the cricket than in the party room but underscored the need for unity. "Unless we can win and hold government, then we can't enhance the freedom, prosperity and security of Victorians or Australians," Mr O'Brien said as he entered Parliament House.. "So we just need to knuckle down, get behind whatever decision is made today and win the next election for Victoria." Opposition financial spokeswoman Jess Wilson announced her candidacy after a deal to become leadership frontrunner Brad Battin's deputy came off the table. "The best way forward to defeat Jacinta Allan and Labor was with a unified leadership ticket," Ms Wilson said. "Unfortunately, it has been made clear to me that a unity ticket is no longer on the table. "Given that and after consulting my colleagues, I've decided to stand to offer them a choice." Mr Battin arrived for the vote flanked by supporters including Sam Groth, while Ms Wilson and Mr Pesutto entered parliament alone. Mr Pesutto entered the opposition party room with deputy David Southwick saying his thoughts were with Victorians experiencing bushfires and the first responders. "We'll deal with these matters in here but the most important thing for us in Victoria is to look out for each other," he said. Mr Crewther's eleventh-hour tilt at the top job came via an email to party members overnight, urging collegues for a "fresh start". "I hope that after today, whoever is chosen as a leader, we all unite behind that person, we all work together, because that's what the Victorians want, they don't want a divided team," he said entering the opposition party room. Mr Pesutto's job had been on shaky ground ever since he lost a defamation case brought against him by former colleague Moira Deeming. A Federal Court judge found the Liberal leader defamed Mrs Deeming by implying she was associated with Nazis who gatecrashed a controversial Melbourne rally she was at and ordered he pay her $315,000 and costs. Then came a shock when former tennis player-turned-politician Mr Groth quit his shadow cabinet post, citing his leader's refusal to stand down after the court loss. A party vote, brought on less than a week later to decide whether Mrs Deeming would be allowed back into the party, split the team down the centre with Mr Pesutto casting the tie-breaking vote to bar her from returning. The Hawthorn MP deemed the matter "resolved" only to propose a January 15 gathering to return the upper house MP to the fold a day later. But that last bid to quell tensions fell flat, with senior MPs Mr Groth, Richard Riordan, James Newbury, Mr Battin and Bridget Vallence signing a petition to meet on Friday to bring the issue to a head. The battle to helm Victoria's opposition comes less than two years before a pivotal state election at which the Labor government - increasingly on the nose with voters - will seek a rare fourth term. Two Aussies are among the six pedestrians injured in New York City on Christmas Day, after a taxi mounted the kerb. The driver of the cab is believed to have suffered a medical episode at about 4pm on Wednesday, veering onto the kerb and into a group of people walking in Herald Square, according to local media. A nine-year-old Australian boy and his mother were both pinned beneath the vehicle. One eyewitness reported to CBS News that the boy’s leg was trapped underneath a tyre as it was spinning, with he and several other pedestrians working together to free the pair of Aussie tourists. Footage of the rescue has since been shared to social media. The boy is now in hospital where he is being treated for injuries to his thigh. Another woman was taken to hospital for treatment and three others declined medical attention, it has been reported. The 58-year-old driver is believed not to have acted maliciously with police confirming the incident occurred after he experienced a medical episode. He remained at the scene and no arrests were made. Originally published as Aussies among injured in NYC taxi incidentGirl who shot her Kiwi mother was ‘anti-social’ and went to gun ranges

VANCOUVER, British Columbia, Dec. 03, 2024 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- K92 Mining Inc . (“ K92 ” or the “ Company ”) (TSX : KNT; OTCQX : KNTNF) is pleased to announce its latest high-grade results from the ongoing surface and underground diamond drilling of the Kora, Kora South, Judd and Judd South deposits in addition to the Kora and Judd Deeps targets at the Kainantu Gold Mine in Papua New Guinea. Multiple high-grade intersections plus two zones of broadening width, identified as dilatant zones, recorded in a previously sparsely drilled area near the twin incline at Kora. The dilatant zones identified are the first to be drilled with significant drill density, demonstrating large interpreted strike lengths of approximately 60 metres in K1 and approximately 100 metres in K2, providing high potential for bulk mining (see Figure 4 for 950 Level Plan Map, and Figures 1 and 2 for K1 and K2 long sections). These dilatant zones are also located near-mine infrastructure, approximately 175 metres south from the current 950 Level access development, enabling potential near-term mining. Importantly, the dilatant zones are in an area previously interpreted to be narrow vein in the mineral resource estimate (September 12, 2023 effective date, “2023 MRE”) and the Updated Integrated Development Plan PEA Case (January 1, 2024 Effective Date, “Updated IDP”), while also recording multiple high-grade intersections. K2 dilatant zone intercepts: KMDD0752: 13.50 m at 19.02 g/t gold equivalent (“AuEq”) (2) (14.93 g/t Au, 199 g/t Ag, 1.00% Cu) KMDD0746: 14.40 m at 12.09 g/t AuEq (9.58 g/t Au, 54 g/t Ag, 1.15% Cu) KMDD0709: 12.14 m at 5.97 g/t AuEq (4.73 g/t Au, 7 g/t Ag, 0.72% Cu) KMDD0751: 9.50 m at 7.00 g/t AuEq (2.26 g/t Au, 42 g/t Ag, 2.63% Cu) K1 dilatant zone intercepts: KMDD0709: 16.10 m at 15.63 g/t AuEq (11.48 g/t Au, 40 g/t Ag, 2.28% Cu) KMDD0743: 14.05 m at 5.56 g/t AuEq (3.14 g/t Au, 56 g/t Ag, 1.07% Cu) KMDD0692: 8.90 m at 8.60 g/t AuEq (3.73 g/t Au, 81 g/t Ag, 2.41% Cu) KMDD0712: 7.25 m at 5.58 g/t AuEq (3.05 g/t Au, 77 g/t Ag, 0.98% Cu) High-grade intercepts: KMDD0698A: 8.15 m at 24.49 g/t AuEq (24.00 g/t Au, 16 g/t Ag, 0.18% Cu) KMDD0775: 4.00 m at 15.58 g/t AuEq (11.53 g/t Au, 44 g/t Ag, 2.19% Cu) KMDD0715: 6.00 m at 9.73 g/t AuEq (4.75 g/t Au, 49 g/t Ag, 2.72% Cu) KMDD0775: 4.60 m at 8.73 g/t AuEq (2.77 g/t Au, 28 g/t Ag, 3.49% Cu) High-grade zones within Kora's K1 and K2 Veins extended up-dip from main mine, with multiple areas exceeding resource model grades, including: K1 Vein high-grade extension up-dip from main underground mining area: KMDD0753: 10.60 m at 34.57 g/t AuEq (27.85 g/t Au, 37 g/t Ag, 3.91% Cu) KMDD0702: 4.37 m at 33.27 g/t AuEq (32.16 g/t Au, 10 g/t Ag, 0.61% Cu) KMDD0705: 5.30 m at 25.67 g/t AuEq (24.99 g/t Au, 3 g/t Ag, 0.40% Cu) KMDD0726: 7.16 m at 9.79 g/t AuEq (7.07 g/t Au, 8 g/t Ag, 1.64% Cu) K2 Vein high-grade extension up-dip from main underground mining area: KMDD0754: 9.35 m at 13.70 g/t AuEq (11.51 g/t Au, 12 g/t Ag, 1.27% Cu) KMDD0705: 6.60 m at 10.76 g/t AuEq (7.27 g/t Au, 12 g/t Ag, 2.08% Cu) KMDD0714: 9.50 m at 9.53 g/t AuEq (8.05 g/t Au, 5 g/t Ag, 0.89% Cu) KMDD0720: 6.66 m at 8.41 g/t AuEq (6.32 g/t Au, 21 g/t Ag, 1.14% Cu) Judd’s J1 Vein recorded an extension of the high-grade zone up-dip from main mine, with several areas reporting significantly higher grades than the 2023 MRE that was based on, at that time, sparse drilling. Additionally, multiple high-grade intercepts were identified beyond the current resource at Judd Deeps and along strike in both directions: J1 Vein high-grade extension up-dip from main underground mining area: JDD0251: 5.00 m at 178.59 g/t AuEq (177.69 g/t Au, 2 g/t Ag, 0.54% Cu) JDD0258: 3.95 m at 51.67 g/t AuEq (50.06 g/t Au, 24 g/t Ag, 0.81% Cu) JDD0263: 7.38 m at 7.66 g/t AuEq (6.87 g/t Au, 14 g/t Ag, 0.38% Cu) J1 Vein high-grade intercepts at Judd Deeps and north of resource: KMDD0729: 1.30 m at 23.33 g/t AuEq (16.77 g/t Au, 52 g/t Ag, 3.69% Cu) JDD0261: 1.70 m at 23.20 g/t AuEq (21.63 g/t Au, 42 g/t Ag, 0.65% Cu) JDD0265: 2.20 m at 15.24 g/t AuEq (6.39 g/t Au, 78 g/t Ag, 4.91% Cu) JDD0266: 3.47 m at 11.88 g/t AuEq (11.41 g/t Au, 9 g/t Ag, 0.22% Cu) Notes: (1) Drill highlights presented above are core lengths (not true widths). Refer to Table 1 to 3. (2) Gold equivalent (AuEq) exploration results are calculated using longer-term commodity prices with a copper price of US$4.00/lb, a silver price of US$22.5/oz and a gold price of US$1,750/oz. John Lewins, K92 Chief Executive Officer and Director, stated, “The latest drilling results at Kora and Judd, once again confirm that the resource expansion potential is very significant, and that there are significant opportunities to upgrade multiple areas in terms of both thickness and grade, with increased drill density. The high-grade zones extended up-dip at Kora and Judd in the main mine area, plus the identification of the two new dilatant zones in the twin incline area is especially significant as they are near existing mine infrastructure, providing a near and medium-term benefit to the Stage 3 Expansion ramp-up. This is also the first time dilatant zones have been drilled with significant drill density, demonstrating substantial strike lengths for bulk mining – these zones have already been integrated into our mine plans. We believe that we control a large gold-copper district of which we are only starting to scratch the surface. In addition to exploration at Kora-Kora South and Judd-Judd South, exploration at Arakompa has considerably expanded over the course of the year, with four drill rigs now operating. We look forward to providing an update in due course.” The results for the latest 95 diamond drill holes completed from surface and underground are summarized in the tables below. The results continue to demonstrate the high-grade, continuity and expansion potential of the Kora-Kora South and Judd-Judd South vein systems. Intersections largely focused on increasing drill density vertically while also targeting resource extension along strike to the south and north. All drill holes at Kora-Kora South (including Kora Deeps) intersected mineralization, with 21 intersections exceeding 10 g/t AuEq and 67 intersections exceeding 5 g/t AuEq. At Judd-Judd South (including Judd Deeps), all drill holes intersected mineralization, with 11 intersections exceeding 10 g/t AuEq and 24 intersections exceeding 5 g/t AuEq. Figures Long sections of K1, K2, and J1 showing the location of the latest drill holes are provided in Figures 1, 2, and 3 , respectively. A plan map showing K1 and K2 at the 950 level is provided in Figure 4. A long section showing Kora drilling to date is provided in Figure 5 . A long section showing Judd drilling to date is provided in Figure 6 . Core photographs are provided, of drill hole JDD0251 in Figure 7 , KMDD0753 in Figure 8 and KMDD0702 in Figure 9 . The Independent Qualified Person responsible for the Mineral Resource estimate is Simon Tear, P.Geo. of H & S Consultants Pty. Ltd., Sydney, Australia, and the effective date of the estimate is September 12, 2023. (Refer to technical report, titled, “Independent Technical Report, Kainantu Gold Mine, Updated Integrated Development Plan, Kainantu Project, Papua New Guinea” dated November 28, 2024, with an effective date of January 1, 2024.) Mineral Resources are not Mineral Reserves and do not have demonstrated economic viability. Geological interpretation has generated a series of narrow, sub-vertical vein structures based on delineated wireframes on 10m, 20m and 25m spaced cross sections. The design of the lode wireframes is based on a combination of logged geology, Au, Cu & Ag assay grades and locally on a nominal minimum mining width of 5.2m, all coupled with geological sense. Resources were compiled at 3 g/t gold equivalent cut-off grades for Kora and Judd. Density (t/m 3 ) was modelled using Ordinary Kriging on 2,778 sample measurements. Areas within the mineral wireframes where no density grades were interpolated had average default values inserted at appropriate levels. Reported tonnage and grade figures are rounded from raw estimates to reflect the order of accuracy of the estimate. Minor variations may occur during the addition of rounded numbers. Estimations used metric units (metres, tonnes and g/t). Gold equivalents are calculated as AuEq = Au g/t + Cu%*1.6481+ Ag g/t*0.0114. Gold price US$1,700/oz; Silver US$22.5/oz; Copper US$4.00/lb. Metal payabilities and recoveries are incorporated into the AuEq formula. Recoveries of 95% for copper and 80% for silver were used. Drill Hole Sampling Methodology, QA/QC and Qualified Person The diamond drill hole is first logged to determine the sampling intervals, which range from a minimum of 0.1 metres to generally 1 metre. The drill core is sawn half core cut along a reference line, with the remainder of the core returned to the core tray. Core samples are then placed in numbered calico and plastic bags, with a numbered sample ticket for dispatch to the assay laboratory. Samples are separately assayed for gold, copper and silver. K92’s procedure includes the insertion standards, blanks and duplicates. Gold assays are by the fire assay method. Copper and silver assays are by three-acid-digestion method (nitric, perchloric and hydrochloric mix). K92 maintains an industry-standard analytical quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC) and data verification program to monitor laboratory performance and ensure high quality assays. Results from this program confirm reliability of the assay results. All sampling and analytical work for the mine exploration program is performed by Intertek Testing Services (PNG) Ltd, an independent accredited laboratory that is located on site. External check assays for QA/QC purposes are performed at SGS Australia Pty Ltd in Townsville, Queensland, Australia. K92 Executive Vice President, Exploration, Mr. Chris Muller, PGeo, and K92 Mine Geology Manager and Mine Exploration Manager, Andrew Kohler, MAIG, both Qualified Persons under the meaning of National Instrument 43-101 – Standards of Disclosure for Mineral Projects , have reviewed and are responsible for the technical content of this news release. In addition to the analytical QA/QC program outlined above, data verification also includes significant time onsite reviewing drill core, soil and outcrop sampling, artisanal workings, as well as discussing work programs and results with geology personnel and external consultants. Former President Jimmy Carter, right, embraces his secretary of state, Edmund Muskie, during the 1985 dedication of the Muskie Archives at Bates College in Lewiston. Bates College photo Despite his Georgia roots, former President Jimmy Carter, who died Sunday in his hometown in Georgia, had closer ties to Lewiston and Auburn than most would expect from a former peanut farmer. He visited the twin cities on a handful of occasions, speaking at least twice at Bates College and scrounging for votes in Auburn during his long-shot presidential campaign in 1975. At the Holiday Inn in Auburn that long-ago December, Carter told a small crowd the country was drifting “in the absence of leadership from the president” and called for someone in the White House who could “inspire the American people to reach for greatness.” At Bates that same day, Carter pledged to several hundred students and resident that he would “never tell a lie, never make a misleading statement, never betray your confidence and never avoid a controversial issue.” Rosalynn Carter, the former president’s wife who died last November, spent even more time in the area in the months leading up to the Maine presidential caucus in 1976, including a couple of overnight stays in Auburn with supporters of her husband and a tea at a Chamberlain Avenue home in Lewiston. Carter, largely unknown to most of the country, wound up winning more delegates in Maine than all the other Democratic contenders combined, providing him with a boost that helped him win the New Hampshire primary a few weeks later and then his party’s nomination in 1976. One of the people who met Carter on that trip, former state Rep. James Handy of Lewiston, told the oral history project at the Muskie Archives at Bates College that the former president “probably more influence on me than any other politician.” “His commitment to other people to me was what I wanted to do,” Handy said. “He really illustrated to me that you can be successful, and your success can be measured in what you do for others and putting other people before yourself.” Handy said that Carter’s commitment to human rights, both internationally and in his own country, exemplified his ethics and helped make him “very inspirational.” Carter defeated incumbent Republican President Gerald Ford in November 1976. In the final year of his one-term presidency, he appointed former U.S. Sen. Edmund Muskie of Maine to serve as his secretary of state, cementing a special tie between the president and the Pine Tree State. When Carter sought a second term, he spent a couple of evenings making phone calls to ordinary people across Maine who were working on his campaign. One of them, Cecilia Treworgy, who taught home economics at Lewiston High School at the time, picked up the phone one night in February 1980 to find Carter on the other end of the line. “I was so taken aback I couldn’t think of anything to say,” Treworgy recalled recently. But Carter lost his reelection bid to Republican Ronald Reagan that year. “I felt very sad when he didn’t win,” Treworgy said. She called him “a very decent man.” After his defeat, Carter began a new career as a volunteer for Habitat for Humanity and promoter of peace in troubled areas worldwide. Just days after Hurricane Gloria slammed New England in September 1985, Carter flew to Lewiston for the dedication of the Muskie Archives at Bates. A college professor, Carl Straub, said at the time: “There is more than the Appalachian Trail which binds Maine to Georgia. There is a common heritage which rises from the simple decency of our people: We share a sense of what is good and just and beautiful. “We share gratitude for the common leadership given us by Jimmy Carter. On this festive occasion when we honor a son of Maine and of Bates, we pause to thank this son of Georgia. “ “His journey has been one of human adventure,” Straub said as the college conferred an honorary doctorate on the former president. “When he reached his highest office, he did not forget the lessons from that journey, for they taught him what is important to the American people.” Carter and Muskie, a former governor from Rumford and a 1936 Bates graduate, were friends. Awarding Muskie the Medal of Freedom in 1981, Carter said he had admired Muskie “ever since I’ve been aware of his public service and been interested myself in going into the political arena.” Carter appreciated the Mainer’s “quiet sense of inner strength and demonstrated courage.” He said that Muskie “has never yielded to temptation to lower his own standards or the standards which make all public servants proud” and despite being “a loyal Democrat,” his service transcended party. In addition to Muskie, the former president also had close ties to another Bates graduate, civil rights leader Benjamin Mays, a leader in the class of 1920 who would later mentor Martin Luther King Jr. During his 1985 speech at Bates, Carter thanked the college “for making it possible for Dr. Benjamin Mays to overcome the handicaps of white supremacy and racism and to take his place among the prominent leaders of our nation and the world.” The address at Bates also touched on some of the recurrent themes of Carter’s public life, including his insistence a country should be measured by its commitment to human rights. “In order to be truly great, we must use our power for the enhancement of peace for ourselves and for others,” he said. “This includes forgoing belligerence and force wherever possible and relying wherever possible on diplomacy.” Comments are not available on this story. NEW YORK (AP) — Top-ranked chess player Magnus Carlsen is headed back to the World Blitz Championship on Monday after its governing body agreed to loosen a dress code that got him fined and denied a late-round game in another tournament for refusing to change out of jeans . Lamenting the contretemps, International Chess Federation President Arkady Dvorkovich said in a statement Sunday that he'd let World Blitz Championship tournament officials consider allowing “appropriate jeans” with a jacket, and other “elegant minor deviations” from the dress code. He said Carlsen's stand — which culminated in his quitting the tournament Friday — highlighted a need for more discussion “to ensure that our rules and their application reflect the evolving nature of chess as a global and accessible sport.” Carlsen, meanwhile, said in a video posted Sunday on social media that he would play — and wear jeans — in the World Blitz Championship when it begins Monday. “I think the situation was badly mishandled on their side,” the 34-year-old Norwegian grandmaster said. But he added that he loves playing blitz — a fast-paced form of chess — and wanted fans to be able to watch, and that he was encouraged by his discussions with the federation after Friday's showdown. “I think we sort of all want the same thing,” he suggested in the video on his Take Take Take chess app’s YouTube channel. “We want the players to be comfortable, sure, but also relatively presentable.” The events began when Carlsen wore jeans and a sportcoat Friday to the Rapid World Championship, which is separate from but held in conjunction with the blitz event. The chess federation said Friday that longstanding rules prohibit jeans at those tournaments, and players are lodged nearby to make sartorial switch-ups easy if needed. An official fined Carlsen $200 and asked him to change pants, but he refused and wasn't paired for a ninth-round game, the federation said at the time. The organization noted that another grandmaster, Ian Nepomniachtchi, was fined earlier in the day for wearing sports shoes, changed and continued to play. Carlsen has said that he offered to wear something else the next day, but officials were unyielding. He said “it became a bit of a matter of principle,” so he quit the rapid and blitz championships. In the video posted Sunday, he questioned whether he had indeed broken a rule and said changing clothes would have needlessly interrupted his concentration between games. He called the punishment “unbelievably harsh.” “Of course, I could have changed. Obviously, I didn’t want to,” he said, and “I stand by that.”WASHINGTON (AP) — President Joe Biden's decision to break his word and pardon his son Hunter has spurred a broader discussion about what else he should be doing with the broad clemency powers of the presidency before he leaves office in January, including whether he should be pardoning Donald Trump. Biden on Tuesday ducked questions about his son, ignoring calls for him to explain his reversal as he was making his first presidential trip to Angola . He dismissed shouted questions about the matter with a laugh during a meeting with Angolan President João Lourenço at the presidential palace, telling the Angolan delegation: “Welcome to America.” Biden was not scheduled to take questions from the press during his trip to Africa, and he has largely avoided interactions with reporters since President-elect Trump’s victory last month. Biden’s decision to offer his son a blanket pardon for actions over the past 11 years has sparked a political uproar in Washington, after the president repeatedly had said he would not use his extraordinary powers for the benefit of his family. Biden claimed that the Justice Department had presided over a “miscarriage of justice” in prosecuting his son, using some of the same language that Trump uses to describe his own legal predicaments. Biden's reversal drew criticism from many Democrats , who are working to calibrate their approach to Trump as he prepares to take over the Oval Office in seven weeks. There is concern the pardon — and Biden's claims that his son was prosecuted for political reasons — will erode their ability to push back on the incoming president’s legal moves. And it has threatened to cloud Biden's legacy as he prepares to leave office on Jan. 20. Hunter Biden is the closest presidential relative ever to be granted clemency, but other leaders have pardoned family members and close friends. Bill Clinton pardoned his brother Roger for drug charges after Roger Clinton had served his sentence. By the time Trump left office after his first term, he had issued 144 pardons, which included Charles Kushner , the father of his son-in law, Jared Kushner. He also pardoned fervent supporters Steve Bannon, Roger Stone, Paul Manafort, Michael Flynn and other people convicted in special counsel Robert Mueller’s Russia investigation. In the months after the 2020 election, Trump and his allies were trying to overturn his loss, a failed effort that culminated in the violent riot by his supporters at the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021. There were discussions at the time over whether Trump would preemptively pardon some of those involved in the effort — and maybe even himself — before he left office. But that never happened. Now, Democrats are having similar discussions about preemptive pardons on their side because of Trump's rhetoric on the campaign trail. He's made no secret of his desire to seek revenge on those who prosecuted him or crossed him. He talks about "enemies from within." He's circulated social media posts that call for the jailing of Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris, former Vice President Mike Pence and Sens. Mitch McConnell and Chuck Schumer. He's also taken aim at Liz Cheney, a conservative Republican who campaigned for Harris, promoting a social media post that suggested he wanted military tribunals to punish her because she was guilty of treason. Sen. Ed Markey, a Massachusetts Democrat, said last week on Boston Public Radio that Biden might consider broad pardons to protect people against whatever wrath Trump may seek, but also as a way to move the country past this acrimonious and divided time. “I think that without question, Trump is going to try to act in a dictatorial way, in a fascistic way, in a revengeful first year at least of his administration toward individuals who he believes harmed him,” Markey said. Presidents enjoy expansive pardon powers when it comes to federal crimes . That includes granting clemency to people who have not yet been charged, as President Gerald Ford did in 1974 when he pardoned his predecessor, Richard Nixon, over the Watergate scandal. The decision at the time caused an uproar but has been seen in the ensuing decades as a move that helped restore order. Markey cited Ford's pardon as a way for the country “just to close that chapter and move on to a new era.” Biden could do the same, Markey said, to help the country move on “to an agenda that deals with the ordinary families.” Sen. Joe Manchin, the Democrat-turned-independent from West Virginia, took it a step further and suggested Biden should even pardon Trump for his efforts to overturn the 2020 election, federal charges that are now evaporating with Trump's upcoming return to the White House. “Why don't you go ahead and pardon Donald Trump for all his charges?" he said in an interview with CNN. “It would have gone down a lot more balanced. I'm just saying, wipe them out.” At the same time, Democratic lawmakers and criminal justice reformers are pushing Biden to grant pardons to broad groups of Americans. Democrats Ayanna Pressley, Jim Clyburn and Mary Gay Scanlon wrote to Biden on Nov. 20, asking him to use his clemency powers to "address longstanding injustices in our legal system, and set our nation on the path toward ending mass incarceration.” The letter, also signed by 61 others, suggested Biden could use his powers to send a powerful message of criminal justice reform and "rectify unjust and unnecessary criminal laws passed by Congress and draconian sentences given by judges.” “We encourage you to use your clemency powers to help broad classes of people and cases, including the elderly and chronically ill, those on death row, people with unjustified sentencing disparities, and women who were punished for defending themselves against their abusers,” they wrote. So far, Biden has pardoned 25 people. Most presidents tend to grant a flurry of clemency requests at the end of their terms, and it's likely Biden will do the same. White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre has said Biden is “thinking through that process very thoroughly.” Weissert reported from Luanda, Angola.

For Army: Beat Navy. For Navy: Beat Army. With the college football landscape changing at a furious rate, the significance of this matchup adds a dose of tradition to mid-December, amid all that talk about the transfer portal and the new expanded playoff. "We've had a good year. You make it a great year by winning this game coming up on Saturday. Frankly, that's just the way it goes around here," Army coach Jeff Monken said. "It's a game and a season really all of its own. We don't apologize for talking about it all the time. We talk about it all the time, and it's 365 days a year." Saturday in Landover, Maryland, is the 125th matchup between Army and Navy, and although these two programs are long removed from their days winning national titles and Heisman Trophies, this is a historic moment in the rivalry. The Black Knights and Midshipmen have combined for 19 wins this season, their highest total ever entering this game. Army (11-1) is ranked 19th in the AP poll after beating Tulane last week to win the American Athletic Conference — the first league title of any kind in the team's 134-year history. Navy (8-3) was ranked as well earlier this season after starting with six straight victories. "I knew we were going to be an improved football team," Navy coach Brian Newberry said. "Didn't know exactly what that was going to look like. I think certainly we've improved in a lot of different areas. I'm excited about the season we've had." This was Army's first season in the AAC, putting the Black Knights and Midshipmen in the same league, although their annual matchup is considered a nonconference game. For a while, there was a chance the teams could meet twice, with a conference championship clash coming before the regularly scheduled Army-Navy game, but that didn't happen. Their most prominent common opponent came from outside the league. Notre Dame handed both Navy and Army its first loss, beating the Midshipmen 51-14 and the Black Knights 49-14. Within the AAC, both teams beat Temple, UAB and East Carolina. Army beat Tulane and Rice and Navy lost to those two teams. Army and Navy also each won its nonconference game against Air Force. Those victories over Air Force mean this season's Commander-In-Chief's Trophy comes down to the Army-Navy game. It's the first time since 2017 that both teams enter this game with a shot at the trophy. It's also the first time since 2017 that both teams enter the game with bowl bids secured. Navy faces Oklahoma in the Armed Forces Bowl and Army takes on Marshall in the Independence Bowl. This year's Army-Navy game is at the Washington Commanders' home stadium in Landover. It was also held there in 2011. This is the first time the game has been in Maryland since Baltimore hosted it in 2016. Baltimore is also up next in 2025. Army quarterback Bryson Daily has 29 rushing touchdowns this season, which is tied for the FBS lead with running back Ashton Jeanty, Boise State's Heisman finalist. Only one QB in FBS history has run for more TDs in a season than Daily. That was Navy's Keenan Reynolds, with 31 in 2013. "You come here to play in this game. The biggest stage possible, millions of people watching and a sold-out NFL stadium. It's awesome," Daily said. "None of the games that happened before this matter. We're going into this game like we're 0-0, they're 0-0 because that's just how you have to come into this game." Navy's closest game this season — win or lose — was a 56-44 win over Memphis. The Midshipmen are the only FBS team that hasn't had a game this season decided by eight points or fewer. AP Sports Writer Stephen Whyno contributed to this report. Perhaps the reason for Victor Mancini’s recall from Hartford to make the trek across the continent to join the Rangers for Saturday’s match in Edmonton will become apparent at the morning skate. That’s because the Blueshirts have been carrying Chad Ruhwedel as the team’s seventh defenseman since he changed places on Nov. 13 with Mancini, the 22-year-old freshman righty who had been a healthy scratch for the four games prior to that. So either a top-six defenseman is being pulled for performance or health reasons and head coach Peter Laviolette does not feel comfortable inserting the 34-year-old veteran into the lineup, or the club might be down another regular defenseman, necessitating that both Mancini and Ruhwedel would dress. The Blueshirts maintained their 23-man roster by dispatching Jake Leschyshyn to the Wolf Pack in exchange for Mancini, who had played three AHL: games (1-0-1) after skating in nine Rangers matches (1-3-4) out of the gate. ABC has made the holiday season a little brighter thanks to The Great Christmas Light Fight . Season 12 is currently underway with more elaborate and unique displays. Even though Carter Oosterhouse has been judging for more than a decade, the longtime judge continues to be impressed. The construction expert and interior designer Taniya Nayak has the difficult task of deciding who out of the four families they visit in each episode takes home $50,000 and the coveted trophy. Here Oosterhouse talks about the show’s longevity and what his residence looks like during the holidays with his wife, actress Amy Smart . It’s amazing how this show has become such an annual holiday tradition for families to watch together. Carter Oosterhouse: The Great Christmas Light Fight is the gift that keeps on giving. The more we are on, the more people come up to me at the airport and reflect on how it’s a tradition for them. They tell me, “We know it’s Christmas time when we see this show come on air.” The family programming this embodies is so sweet and perfect for the holiday season. You have the holiday movies on, which are nostalgic and fun. This is a little bit different, yet gives the same moment for families to gather and have a nice little night at home. Disney/Jim Gensheimer How would you say your judging eye has evolved? That’s a good question. I think sometimes as a judge you don’t even realize how these displays continue to get better. And it’s not just bigger. It’s more than more lights. I always say I can pick the winner right when the lights go on, but that’s not always true because now what I’ve seen is the creativity level has skyrocketed. People are more and more creative than ever before. It’s not just about putting lights on a tree or making sure the balance is correct or the color profile is engaging and interesting. It’s really about creativity. What that means is people are starting to tell stories with their lights. That’s fascinating. In scripted or nonscripted TV, it’s all about telling a story. When you watch something, that is why you keep going back to it. Now these families with these light displays are telling stories. As the viewer, it’s so much more dynamic and interesting to the point you have to scratch your head and say, “I’m blown away. I’m shocked. Just when you think you’ve seen them all, you haven’t.” Technology has also advanced within these displays through computer programming and drones. The technology is there and every year it gets better. Sometimes we do have people who are extremely good with computers and putting light and synchronized lights together, but that’s not always the winner. I don’t want to say it’s usually not the winner, but it seems to me what I have learned is over time I go back to the creative ones. Those are going to be the winners. If they can throw tech in there, even better because it makes it faster, more efficient maybe, and more interesting to some degree. As far as technology goes, every year we’re seeing something different. The light fighters who have been doing it for decades and are at the forefront of this technology, really geek out over that. I do too. I love learning more about it. Then some people who are doing it for the first time knock your socks off because they have no frame of reference. They just want to do something they want to do and in their mind is really cool. I’m always amazed at the dedication of these participants. The light fighters work extremely hard. They are very diligent with what they are doing. The families are in the grind. When September comes around, they are starting to put their lights up and it’s all hands on deck. It’s a lot of work. As a judge too, I want to make sure I applaud them and give them the credit they deserve. It is impressive to see the lengths they go. These guys are beyond the next level. They know the drill. They take the kids to school, go to work, and then come home to start working on their display at all hours of the night. Then they get up the next day and do the same thing. The cool thing is I’d say 99 percent of the people are happy to do this for their community. That’s the best part. On your travels, have there been places you never thought about going but are glad you went? For Trading Spaces , we traveled all over the United States. I think that was the indoctrination of a really crazy travel schedule. I’d say the good thing is I can go back to some of these areas. To your point, I do get to see areas that have lit up these lights or sometimes they are theme parks because we do heavyweights as well. We get into bigger areas that have the capability of dressing it up. Those are eye-opening. I’m in this last round of shooting right now where there are plenty of places I’ve said, “I want to bring my daughter back here.” That’s a sign they’ve done a really good job. You and Taniya are solo judging in these episodes, but do you talk much? We touch base a couple of times during the season and before. It’s funny because it is all very similar for us. There is a progression of what these light fighters are doing. I always feel like I can figure it out if they are going to be a top tier when the lights go on. Lately, I feel as you’ve gotten into it, this is not what I expected at all and even better. That’s fun. Taniya and I have been on the same page with all that. Carter Oosterhouse and Amy Smart at “Common Ground” Screening. (Gregg DeGuire/Variety via Getty Images) Does this being known for this show put pressure on you at home to deliver a good display? Does Amy get you to work? Good question. It used to be my wife saying, “So what are we doing? Why aren’t we having any lights?” I say, “I am the judge of The Great Christmas Light Fight . I feel like I would not do a service and carry out the oath of being a judge and fail miserably putting lights up.” Usually, when I get home it’s a lot closer to Christmas. So, we do the inside. I’ve been trying to bring back things people make as a builder and duplicate them. There are a lot of makers out there. You see this guy who has been working in his workshop, who has this crazy Santa Claus walking up a ladder built on a timing system. I think that’s really cool that I want to go home and do that. So I have dabbled in those. You mentioned you’re filming right now for next year. Do you go back and watch the episodes airing as a family at home? We try to, absolutely, when I’m not shooting for next year. We critique. If my daughter is into it, I feel like I’m doing my job. There are tons of shows she can watch, especially during the holidays. I feel if she is into it, I’m doing alright. What’s your go-to Christmas movies to watch? Do you watch Amy’s movie Just Friends ? I feel sometimes people forget that is a Christmas movie. Just Friends , we do watch that. That is definitely a Christmas movie. We go back to all the nostalgic movies. National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation , we run back through all that. Now there are all these shows, too. Like these Christmas baking shows. I feel like those are of interest to us too. I guess we’re finding shows I never thought I would watch and falling into. Also, being on a show this long, we’re so thankful it has been on the air this long and having such a successful run. You go through a rollercoaster of emotions. Right now, we’re doing great. It’s fun. It’s a new interest not just on the show but on Christmas too. It’s all about being loved ones. This experience has really helped me dive deeper into the whole Christmas world and look at it from other angles compared to when I first started on the show. Related 2024 Holiday TV Roundup: Full Schedules for NBC, CBS, ABC, More Anything you can tease about the episodes to come? There is one episode that is coming up, and what was really of interest was the coordination. Not just of the lights but things that these blow molds were doing within the light display. We see a lot of coordination from the tech world, but when you can take traditional elements and mix those into a newer feel, that was really impressive. There was this choir of blow molds in the show, and that was so dynamic because you think, “Wait? Are those blow molds singing to me now?” There was a ton of them. Not only was it visually interesting but to hear it was amazing. What do you want to see from the show moving forward? I do like the heavyweights. Those are really fun to shoot because they are on such a different level. It’s also the community is helping out as well. You just have more people involved. I’d like to see more of those to tell you the truth because there seems to be a lot more people, which creates a bigger energy. That’s not to say the homes don’t do that. We only do one of these types of episodes a year, but I’d love to see more of them. The Great Christmas Light Fight , Thursdays, 8/7c, ABC More Headlines: ‘Firefly’ Reunion! The cryptocurrency industry has always been a mystery and interesting to investors as the potential for returns is valued at higher levels. The news is very much in favor of Ripple’s XRP and Rexas Finance’s token, RXS, as they both show the potential for explosive growth. Significant movements are expected by the end of the year because XRP has once again gained strength, and RXS is another revolutionary utility coin set to change the market dynamics. Ripple (XRP): Why XRP’s Price Is Going to $3 Soon XRP, with its price of $1.10, is drawing a lot of investor attention. It finally has a chart showing definable progress after meaningless litigation and thumb-twiddling in the market. There is an infusion of optimism around XRP due to several reasons, such as Ripple winning a host of lawsuits and the market taking a corrective move. Predictions now suggest the $3 figure for XRP may be reached by the end of 2024. Factors likely to drive this revised target include the prospect of Ripple launching an ETF, the adoption of Ripple’s On-Demand Liquidity (ODL) solution by enterprises, and the persistent need for reliable international payment systems. As Ripple continues pursuing partnerships with native banks, its position within the blockchain payment ecosystem is steadily solidifying. XRP is gaining momentum, likely driven by current and potential higher demand for the coin. Crossing the $1.25 mark could potentially set off a competitive wave of increased trading for the token, pushing its value to around $3. Rexas Finance (RXS): The Coin Selling for $0.09 but Hopes to Hit $12 Within 2 Months Rexas Finance (RXS) is a utility token based on Ethereum, sought after by many due to its brilliant model and ambitious goals. Priced at $0.09, RXS has raised over $10 million and sold about 179 million of its 200 million coins. With a price of $0.20 at launch, it’s not unthinkable for RXS to potentially reach $12 within 66 days of launch. A distinguishing feature of RXS is its active pursuit of the foreign market, focusing on the tokenization of real-world objects such as real estate, precious assets, and intellectual property. This unique technology allows a wide range of investors to hold fractional ownership in high-cost assets. Its utility is further enhanced by asset tokenization tools such as the Rexas Token Builder and the Rexas Launchpad, which promote new blockchains. Rexas Finance also combines DeFi innovations such as GenAI, which uses artificial intelligence to create NFTs and a decentralized treasury that provides yield-maximizing solutions. The multi-functional ecosystem appeals to various types of investors and presents an optimistic outlook for the Rexas Finance is safe for investors and clients, as its smart contracts have passed a CertiK audit. The project is also verified on CoinMarketCap and CoinGecko, providing credentials and visibility in the market. This is not just a project with innovative ideas; Rexas Finance also focuses on building a strong community. They have conducted a $1 million giveaway, where 20 RXS token winners received $50,000 worth each. Such campaigns capture the attention of their community and early backers, improving usage. Owning an RXS token is easy, as it follows Ethereum’s ERC-20 model. Investors can trade this token with ETH, USDT, or a credit card through its intuitive interface. The ease of access has made this token increasingly popular, becoming a preference for both retail and institutional traders. Conclusion: A Story of Two Investment Opportunities For crypto investors, Rexas Finance (RXS) and Ripple XRP are two distinct investment opportunities. As XRP rises back into the spotlight for being a blockchain payment service, it is on strong footing to post immense growth in the near future. On the other hand, RXS introduces uses and innovations that are unparalleled, as it revolutionizes the tokenization of real estate. XRP and RXS offer an interesting proposition for investors looking to take advantage of current market conditions. XRP is setting its sights on $3, while RXS aims for $12. Both tokens are preparing to provide huge returns in this fast-changing market. UCF, LSU face off with improved focus in mind

LOS ANGELES — In an effort to fight the sexual exploitation of children, federal authorities will teach Los Angeles Unified School District students, staff and parents how to stay safe online. A memorandum of understanding between the nation's second-largest school district, the U.S. Attorney's Office and Homeland Security Investigations was announced Friday. HSI Los Angeles special agents, primarily from the Child Exploitation Investigations Group, will offer the so-called iGuardian trainings, which aim to educate participants about the dangers of online sexual predators and instruct them how to avoid and report abuse. The in-person training program will focus mainly on preteens and teenagers but can be tailored to younger children, as well as staff and parents, officials said in a news release . The program is part of a national campaign by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security to raise awareness about online child sexual exploitation, which the agency calls a "rapidly escalating threat." That effort also stems from a long-running U.S. Department of Justice initiative that seeks to combat technology-facilitated sex crimes against children. ©2024 Los Angeles Times. Visit latimes.com .
