Every investor has heard the phrase "buy low, sell high." It's a simple enough piece of advice that's less simple to apply. What exactly qualifies as "low"? One possible answer is when a company's shares fall significantly in one day following a setback that barely affects its long-term prospects. That's what recently happened to Vertex Pharmaceuticals ( VRTX -0.46% ) , a biotech company. Here is why now is as good a time as any to "buy low" when it comes to this stock. Vertex's pain medicine underwhelms Vertex Pharmaceuticals' suzetrigine is an investigational pain treatment. Its first approved indication could come as early as next month in treating acute pain. It will seek label expansions thereafter, including in targeting painful lumbosacral radiculopathy (LSR, a condition that results from a pinched or inflamed nerve in the lower back). Vertex Pharmaceuticals recently released data from a phase 2 study for suzetrigine in LSR. Unfortunately, the market was not impressed. The medicine hit its primary endpoint of a decrease in the average daily leg pain intensity as measured by the Numeric Pain Rating Scale after 12 weeks of treatment. Suzetrigine led to a statistically significant reduction in pain, but so did a placebo, and the difference between the two was not particularly large. This data created some uncertainty concerning suzetrigine's efficacy in people with LSR, a condition that affects millions of patients every year, and could, therefore, be a large and lucrative market for Vertex Pharmaceuticals. That's why the company's shares dipped by more than 10% in one day after it released this data. Focus on the long game Vertex will likely still run a phase 3 study for suzetrigine in LSR that could break its way. But what if it doesn't? The biotech has many more tricks up its sleeves. It recently earned approval for its next-gen cystic fibrosis (CF) therapy, Alyftrek. Vertex has a monopoly in the CF drug market. Alyftrek is yet another improvement from its latest gem, Trikafta. Among other things, Alyftrek is just as effective despite its once-daily dosage (Trikafta is taken twice a day). The company's CF franchise continues to drive strong top-line growth. Third-quarter revenue increased by 12% year over year to $2.77 billion. There is still a good chance suzetrigine will earn approval in acute pain next month. Vertex has also been ramping up its gene-editing treatment, Casgevy, which targets two rare blood diseases. Although it has been approved for over a year in some markets, including the U.K., Casgevy will take time to impact Vertex's financial results significantly. That is the nature of gene-editing treatments. However, the medicine has a massive, multibillion-dollar opportunity. You can also look at Vertex's pipeline. It has phase 3 programs in APOL-1 mediated kidney disease and Iga nephropathy (also a kidney disease). It has earlier-stage programs in type 1 diabetes, a particularly promising project for Vertex Pharmaceuticals. The company's VX-880 could be a functional cure for patients with this chronic condition and allow them to make their own insulin, something that is typically impossible for people with type 1 diabetes. In an ongoing phase 1/2 study, 12 patients treated with VX-880 11 showed reduced or complete elimination of the need for synthetic insulin. Three of them with more than a year of follow-up also showed elimination of severe hypoglycemic events. There is still a long way to go before Vertex earns approval for VX-880, but the company has consistently demonstrated its innovative qualities. Though the phase 2 data for suzetrigine in LSR is a bit of a setback, it does little to change Vertex's long-term prospects. What happened last time the company's shares fell off a cliff following a clinical setback? That was on Oct. 14, 2020, when it announced it was giving up on a phase 2 trial for VX-814, an investigational therapy for Alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency. And since Oct. 15, 2020, Vertex's shares have outperformed the S&P 500 , even taking into account its recent massive drop. If this season is any indication, the rebuilt conference will prove challenging. Washington State and Oregon State hardly dominated their Mountain West competition. In fact, they lost more games head-to-head (eight) than they won (seven). Clearly, neither program is on Boise State’s level. But several losses came to teams that finished in the bottom half of the Mountain West standings. There are immediate concerns, as well. Oregon State must identify a dependable quarterback, whether it’s one of the returnees or a transfer. And that quarterback needs targets in the passing game. “They need speed,” Burton said of the receivers. “They have nobody who can take the top off a defense and let (receivers) Trent Walker and Darrius Clemons go to work underneath.” The offensive line is “good enough,” Burton added. But the other side of scrimmage is in bad shape. “They are woefully behind on the defensive line,” he said of a unit that allowed 186 rushing yards per game. “That’s the main issue. The claims are detailed in the 2021 audited report recently released by the Office of the Auditor-General of the Federation. An influencer and her husband were arrested after they tried to hire a couple to kill an internet rival. Though her husband was acquitted, the influencer received the maximum sentencing. In October 2024, social media influencer Ashley Grayson received 10 years in prison for murder-for-hire. In August 2022, the 35-year-old asked a woman, whom she had worked with before, to fly to Dallas to discuss a “business opportunity.” The next month, the woman and her husband flew in to meet with Grayson. The influencer and her husband then propositioned the couple to kill her ex-boyfriend, an internet rival, and a woman who had criticized Grayson online. At the time, she offered the couple $20,000 for each murder. On September 10, 2022, the woman Grayson had hired recorded a video call in which the influencer confirmed that she wanted her internet rival killed immediately. She even offered an extra $5,000 for the killing to be done within a week. Grayson’s tension with her internet rival, who resides in Mississippi, began in 2021 after she started an online business that was similar to Grayson’s. Grayson ineligible for parole In July 2023, a grand jury indicted Grayson and her husband for the murder-for-hire plot. Though her husband was acquitted, Grayson was found guilty. In October 2024, the influencer was sentenced to the maximum penalty and received 10 years in prison. Once free, she’ll have three years of supervised release. Since her case was federal, she will not be eligible for parole. Attorney Reagan Fondren said in a statement that although it was fortunate nobody was hurt, the case was the result of a ‘senseless rivalry.’ “This was a twenty-first century crime where online feuds and senseless rivalries bled into the real world,” Fondren said. “The defendant tried to hire someone to murder a woman over things that happened exclusively on the internet. But even as they realized one goal by making the postseason, Harbaugh tried to keep things focused on the road ahead by stressing: “There's more to do.” The Chargers (10-6) go into the regular-season finale at Las Vegas knowing they will be at least the AFC's sixth seed and avoid a trip to Buffalo for the wild-card round. Los Angeles currently is in line to face Baltimore in a Harbaugh Bowl rematch, but it has an outside shot at the fifth seed and a trip to Houston if Cincinnati beats Pittsburgh next weekend. While Harbaugh credited his players for the turnaround from five wins last year to double-digit victories this season, Herbert gave most of it to Harbaugh and first-year general manager Joe Hortiz. “They have done such a great job of getting the right guys here. You look in the locker room and everybody plays for each other,” Herbert said. “(Harbaugh's) a competitor, and he wants to win no matter what it is. President-elect Donald Trump has once again suggested he wants to revert the name of North America’s tallest mountain — Alaska's Denali — to Mount McKinley, wading into a sensitive and decades-old conflict about what the peak should be called. ALTOONA, Pa. — The man accused of killing UnitedHealthcare’s CEO struggled with deputies and shouted while being led into court Tuesday as new details emerged about his possible motivation behind the ambush. In his first public words since a five-day search ended with his arrest at a McDonald’s in Pennsylvania, Luigi Nicholas Mangione emerged from a patrol car shouting about an “insult to the intelligence of the American people” while deputies pushed him inside a courthouse. The 26-year-old Ivy League graduate from a prominent Maryland real estate family is fighting attempts to extradite him to New York to face a murder charge in the Manhattan killing of Brian Thompson, who led the United States’ largest medical insurance company. A law enforcement bulletin obtained by The Associated Press said that at the time of his arrest, Mangione carried a handwritten document expressing anger with what he called “parasitic” health insurance companies and a disdain for corporate greed and power. He wrote that the U.S. has the most expensive health care system in the world and that profits of major corporations continue to increase while “our life expectancy” does not, according to the bulletin. In social media posts, Mangione called “Unabomber” Ted Kaczynski — who carried out a series of bombings while railing against modern society and technology — a “political revolutionary,” according to the bulletin. Mangione remained jailed in Pennsylvania, where he was initially charged with possession of an unlicensed firearm, forgery and providing false identification to police. Manhattan prosecutors began to take steps to bring Mangione to New York, but at a brief hearing Tuesday, defense lawyer Thomas Dickey said his client will not waive extradition and instead wants a hearing on the issue. Mangione was denied bail after prosecutors said he was too dangerous to be released. “You can’t rush to judgment in this case or any case,” Dickey said afterward. “He’s presumed innocent. Nino Mangione. “We offer our prayers to the family of Brian Thompson and we ask people to pray for all involved.” From January to June 2022, Luigi Mangione lived at Surfbreak, a “co-living” space at the edge of touristy Waikiki in Honolulu. Like other residents of the shared penthouse catering to remote workers, Mangione underwent a background check, said Josiah Ryan, a spokesperson for owner and founder R.J. Martin. “Luigi was just widely considered to be a great guy. There were no complaints,” Ryan said. “There was no sign that might point to these alleged crimes they’re saying he committed.” At Surfbreak, Martin learned Mangione had severe back pain from childhood that interfered with many aspects of his life, from surfing to romance, Ryan said. In Kelly Ayotte’s campaign for governor, the now-governor-elect was clear in ads and speeches: She would not be making changes to the state’s abortion law. That law, passed in 2021, bans abortions after six months of pregnancy except in cases of fatal fetal anomalies or to protect the life of the mother. House and Senate Republican leaders also stressed in the lead-up to Election Day that their party would not pursue further abortion restrictions. But just over a week after the deadline for House bill requests for the 2025 session, some Republicans have demonstrated an interest in taking New Hampshire’s abortion restriction further. Others have explored different laws that relate to the topic. Those bills — if they passed the Legislature — could present a political challenge for Ayotte. On the other side, Democrats are continuing to advocate for legislation that would enshrine abortion rights in New Hampshire statute. Here’s a guide to some of the legislation coming up next year. Making transportation of minors without parental consent illegal In April, a private school teacher was fired after transporting a student to an abortion clinic without parents being aware, according to a subsequent lawsuit. The student in that case was over 18, meaning they did not need to have parental permission to obtain the abortion. After initially having her state teacher’s license suspended, the teacher, referred to as “Jane Doe,” filed a lawsuit about the suspension and has since had her credentials restored. But though the student in question in that case was over 18, Rep. Glenn Cordelli says there should be a law stopping adults from making similar arrangements for minors. Cordelli, a Tuftonboro Republican, has filed a bill that would create criminal and civil penalties for the “recruitment, harboring, or transporting” of a pregnant minor to obtain an abortion without parental permission — unless that child had been emancipated. “I view it as more of a parental rights issue, not an abortion issue,” Cordelli said in an interview. “A parent has the right to know what’s going on. I’ve even heard it being termed ‘kidnapping.’ ” Cordelli said he is unaware of cases in New Hampshire where minors have been taken to get abortions without parental consent but said his bill is intended to be precautionary. Information on abortion and alternatives in sex ed Rep. John Sellers, a Bristol Republican, has submitted a bill “requiring the discussion of abortion procedures and viewing of certain videos during health education in public schools.” The idea, Sellers said in an interview, is to provide students with a full understanding of abortion. “This video would actually help them understand what goes in and what’s involved in an abortion,” Sellers said. Sellers has proposed a separate bill “requiring school districts to educate students regarding adoption during health education for grades 9 through 12.” That bill is meant to teach students about potential alternatives to abortion, Sellers said. Due to intensive attention on abortion laws and rights in recent years, Sellers argues kids are already exposed to the idea of abortion. “I’m trying to protect the kids and trying to get them more educated on not only the value of life, but also, you know, if you’re going to do an abortion, this is what it is. And you know what? You don’t have to do an abortion if you have an unplanned pregnancy. You can have an adoption.” Sellers said he hasn’t heard from constituents upset about what their schools are teaching about abortion. But he said the bill is a general response to the increasing prevalence of abortion. A further abortion ban? Despite wishes by leadership, some Republican lawmakers pushed for abortion restrictions in the last session. But their plans this time around are difficult to confirm. Rep. Katy Peternel, a Wolfeboro Republican and the assistant majority whip in the House, has submitted a bill with the description “relative to restrictions on elective abortion.” What that bill does is unclear. In a text exchange, Peternel said that her bill “will allow late-term abortion when the pregnancy poses any risk to the mother’s health or there is a fatal fetal abnormality.” But she did not answer questions about whether the bill would change the current 24-week restrictions. “I don’t have any further comments at this time,” she said in response to repeated follow-up questions. The full text of Peternel’s bill will be made public by the Office of Legislative Services — the nonpartisan office that drafts bills requested by lawmakers — around the end of December. Representatives of the office declined to provide Peternel’s legislative service request describing the bill, saying it is confidential. For his part, Sellers said he would support a 15-week ban — or a six-week ban. He said many of his constituents agree. “They think the 24-week bill is way too long,” he said of his constituents. “I mean, that’s six months. If someone hasn’t made a decision in six months, that’s pretty sad. But you get both sides. No one wants to give (the right to abortion) up, but I don’t think anybody really wants to go that far out.” But more restrictions may have difficulty gaining support. In February, the House voted down by voice vote House Bill 1541, which would have required any abortion after 15 weeks to be carried out in a hospital — not an abortion provider — and in the presence of two physicians. Watching for change For the Planned Parenthood New Hampshire Action Fund — an advocacy group that operates separately from Planned Parenthood’s medical operations — the next session is about playing defense. Kayla Montgomery, the organization’s vice president of public affairs, says she’ll be watching whether any abortion restrictions clear the House and Senate and make it to the governor’s desk. “I think it’s just really important that we remember that Gov.-elect Ayotte spent a lot of time and energy and dollars explaining to people that she would not pass any abortion restrictions or any abortion bans, and it’s really important that voters hold her accountable to that,” Montgomery said. Montgomery said she is monitoring for “TRAP laws,” an acronym used by abortion rights supporters that stands for “targeted regulation of abortion providers.” That could include any laws that require abortion providers to change staffing or building layouts such as hallway widths. There are no House legislative service requests that indicate such laws. The deadline for House submissions of legislative service requests was Nov. 22, but senators have not set their deadlines and may continue to propose legislation this month. Beyond Concord, Planned Parenthood is bracing for potential funding cuts under the administration of President-elect Donald Trump. In 2018, during Trump’s previous term as president, his administration passed regulations requiring reproductive health centers to draw a “bright line” to financially separate abortion care from other health care in order to continue qualifying for Title X funds. Many organizations that provide abortions — including Planned Parenthood — pulled out of receiving federal funding. Those rules, referred to by opponents as the “domestic gag order,” were overturned by President Joe Biden, but Montgomery expects Trump to restore the order when he takes office in January. New Hampshire’s Republican-led Executive Council has also blocked state family planning and reproductive health funding from going to Planned Parenthood, as well as two other organizations that provide abortions in the state: the Equality Health Center of Concord and the Joan G. Lovering Health Center of Greenland. This new model not only does away with layers of obfuscation, but introduces an element of “naming and shaming” that compels officials to be directly answerable, the study has found. “PRAGATI shows us it is essential for nations to cultivate an environment where top leadership is using technology to drive cross-collaboration and regular accountability reviews. Losing to older brother John Harbaugh and seeing the Los Angeles Chargers' four-game winning streak snapped Monday night might be the least of Jim Harbaugh's problems this week. The Chargers are holding their breath that running back J.K. Dobbins isn't seriously hurt after he left with a knee injury late in the first half of the Chargers’ 30-23 loss to the Baltimore Ravens . Harbaugh, who dislikes discussing injuries and eschews questions about any player's status with the tried and true “I'm not a doctor” answer, will get plenty of inquiries about Dobbins' health this week. After injuries derailed Dobbins' four years with the Ravens, the 2020 second-round pick decided to bet on himself by signing only a one-year deal with the Chargers. Though the first 10 1/2 games, the bet appeared to be paying off. Dobbins had 40 yards on six carries when he was wrenched backward by linebacker Malik Harrison and then gang-tackled on a play for no gain on third-and-1 at the 50-yard line. Dobbins is fourth in the AFC in rushing with 766 yards and averages 4.8 yards per carry, third highest among AFC backs with at least 100 carries. He has been considered among the candidates for AP Comeback Player of the Year after suffering a torn Achilles tendon in last season’s opener. Dobbins' production throughout the season has made the offense more balanced. Los Angeles had 14 rushes for 68 yards before he was injured. They had seven carries for 15 yards the rest of the game. Without Dobbins and a 14-13 deficit at halftime, the Chargers tried to count on Justin Herbert and the passing game to rally back. And there is context. A select few of the biggest clubs, such as Real Madrid, don’t seem all that enthusiastic about participating. They will have to be incentivized to come and try to win. How? With tens of millions of dollars in prize money and appearance fees. Sort of — to the extent that all of modern sport is about money. The Club World Cup is FIFA’s attempt to monetize soccer’s biggest clubs and players — which double as the sport’s most marketable brands. Currently, the vast majority of club soccer games, and therefore revenues — from broadcast rights, sponsorships and more — are controlled by domestic leagues, such as the English Premier League; and by continental confederations, namely UEFA, which runs the hugely profitable Champions League. FIFA, meanwhile, makes billions off the World Cup, a quadrennial showpiece for national teams. But because the Champions League is an annual bonanza, UEFA’s revenues are far greater. Those revenues trickle down to European clubs and national soccer federations, which use the money to recruit or produce players — and consolidate their supremacy. So, FIFA created the Club World Cup, which, for the first time, could allow the global governing body to profit off those same clubs — and share some small percentage of the spoils with 200-plus national soccer federations around the world, rather than solely the European ones. FIFA argues that this would be a . Critics argue it's a “cash grab”; part of a personal battle between Infantino and UEFA president Aleksander Čeferin; and a ploy to reinforce Infantino’s political power — because the presidents of the 200-plus national soccer federations sharing the spoils double as FIFA’s electorate. UEFA and the top European leagues, meanwhile, have and Infantino’s plan, because they want to keep all Real Madrid- or Manchester City-related revenue to themselves. The players and their unions are. FIFPRO Europe, a branch of the global players’ union, has called the Club World Cup a “tipping point” in the broader context of soccer’s ever-congested calendar. They’ve against FIFA, which “unilaterally set” the calendar, with space carved out for the Club World Cup. They that, especially with the new tournament extending seasons by a month, players’ bodies and brains are becoming overworked and overwhelmed. The leagues, on the other hand, say they’re concerned about workload; but really, they want to protect their market share. They already organize dozens of games per club every year; the Club World Cup will merely add a few games for a small handful of teams once every four years. The leagues want to preserve their primacy on the calendar. Their problem is that FIFA controls both the Club World Cup and the calendar. So they, too, have and attacked “FIFA’s conflict of interest.” They’ve argued to the European Commission that FIFA is abusing its position as both a commercially minded organizer and regulator of soccer. Their case, which many experts believe has merit, could muddy the future of this new tournament. The vast majority of the 32 do — and hundreds of others worldwide would love to. (Mainstream European media have largely ignored non-European perspectives.) A noisy minority, however, want to they’re well compensated. Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti explained the dynamic in this past June — albeit with words he later walked back: "One single Real Madrid game is worth €20 million, and FIFA wants to give us that amount for the entire competition. ... Just like us, other clubs will refuse the invitation." Real Madrid and the rest of the clubs have since said they’re committed to the tournament. But behind the scenes, sources have told Yahoo Sports, they’re demanding hefty sums of cash. The last month that some want “significant eight-figure [appearance] fees in addition to prize money.” The question, then, for FIFA, has been: Where’s that money coming from? FIFA, anticipating immense interest in the Club World Cup, initially budgeted billions of dollars in revenue. But broadcasters and sponsors — the two main sources of potential income — were lukewarm. Negotiations with Apple collapsed. At the start of December, no television partners had been announced; and sponsors had only just begun to appear. FIFA, by all accounts, will fall short of its target, leading — and how much it will be able to pay the participating clubs. Part of the answer came Wednesday, when FIFA announced that DAZN, a struggling sports streaming platform, would broadcast all 63 Club World Cup games to viewers around the world for free. But the finances of that deal — and of the Club World Cup more broadly — remain murky. How much DAZN is paying for the tournament, , and whether the rights will be sublicensed to major TV networks in some countries is all unclear. Two people familiar with the deal told Yahoo Sports that, in its entirety, it’s worth around $1 billion. But in their press releases, FIFA and DAZN called the 2025 Club World Cup broadcast rights “the start of a broader partnership.” It’s unclear what portion of the roughly $1 billion is for the Club World Cup, and what portion might be for other rights that are part of a more extensive package. (Spokesmen for FIFA and DAZN both declined to comment on the speculation about potential Saudi involvement.) For now, in the U.S., the answer is no — DAZN, a platform that very few U.S. sports fans use, will be the exclusive broadcaster, and the only place to watch games. FIFA, though, mentioned in its news release “the possibility of sublicensing to local free-to-air linear broadcast networks.” This means that, for example, Fox could pay FIFA and/or DAZN to broadcast some of all of the 63 games. If there is no such sublicensing, the DAZN deal will be disastrous for the visibility of the tournament in the U.S. Nope. , you can “ ” in tickets, but FIFA has not said when or how you’ll be able to buy them. It could be. In many ways, it should be. But with budgets reportedly slashed, and planning far behind schedule, most insiders expect the 2025 edition to be a mixed bag of vibrancy, mishaps, full stadiums and duds. Even a mixed bag, though — in the absence of boycotts or legal interventions — should be enough to get the Club World Cup off the ground, and in position for success in 2029 and beyond. Like during the Senate vote, opponents to the power-shifting bill sat in the gallery and disrupted the chambers' floor proceedings. More than 150 people gathered on the third floor — more than the House gallery could seat. They chanted “shame” as the override vote completed and continued to yell as they were escorted out. Many provisions within the 132-page law seek to diminish powers afforded to Gov.-elect Josh Stein, incoming attorney general Jeff Jackson, the next Democratic lieutenant governor and the schools superintendent. They all take office early next month. One of the most significant changes shifts the power to appoint State Board of Elections members from the governor to the state auditor, who will be a Republican next year. People are also reading... For decades, the governor has selected its five members, with the governor’s party usually taking three seats. The enacted law transfers that power to the state auditor starting in spring. This in turn, means Republicans will likely hold majorities on the state board and the county election boards. The veto override took place in the final days of a lame-duck General Assembly session where Republicans hold exactly the number of seats necessary to override vetoes without help from Democrats. That won’t be the case much longer — barring a successful election protest that would flip a race’s result — after Democrats picked up one more House seat in the general elections. Despite ultimately succeeding in their override, House Republicans had some difficulty staying unified. Some GOP lawmakers from western North Carolina — where Hurricane Helene caused historic flooding — initially voted against the measure. But all three — Reps. Mike Clampitt, Karl Gillespie and Mark Pless — ended up voting to override the veto. 'Bashar al-Assad, family in Moscow' after ouster from power Russian news agencies say ousted Syrian president and his family granted asylum on humanitarian grounds MOSCOW: Syria's Bashar al-Assad and his family have arrived in Russia and have been granted asylum by the Russian authorities, Russian news agencies reported on Sunday, citing a Kremlin source. The Interfax news agency quoted the unnamed source as saying: "President Assad of Syria has arrived in Moscow. Russia has granted them (him and his family) asylum on humanitarian grounds." Earlier, two Syrian sources said the disappearance of the Assad’s plane from tracking could indicate it had been shot down, or that it had switched off its transponder. Syria rebel fighters raced into Damascus unopposed on Sunday, overthrowing President Bashar al-Assad and ending nearly six decades of his family's iron-fisted rule after a lightning advance that reversed the course of a 13-year civil war. In one of the most consequential turning points in the Middle East for generations, the fall of Assad's government wiped out a bastion from which Iran and Russia exercised influence across the Arab world. Moscow gave him and his family asylum. His sudden overthrow, at the hands of a Turkish-backed revolt, limits Iran's ability to spread weapons to its allies and could cost Russia its Mediterranean naval base. It also may pave the way for millions of refugees scattered for more than a decade in camps across Turkey, Lebanon and Jordan to finally return home. For Syrians, it brought a sudden unexpected end to a war that had been in deep freeze for years, with hundreds of thousands dead, cities pounded to dust, an economy hollowed out by global sanctions and seemingly no resolution in sight. "How many people were displaced across the world? How many people lived in tents? How many drowned in the seas?" the top rebel commander Abu Mohammed al-Golani told a huge crowd at the medieval Umayyad Mosque in central Damascus, referring to refugees who drowned trying to reach Europe. "A new history, my brothers, is being written in the entire region after this great victory," he said. It would take hard work to build a new Syria which he said would be "a beacon for the Islamic nation". The Assad police state — known since his father seized power in the 1960s as one of the harshest in the Middle East with hundreds of thousands of political prisoners in its gulag — melted away overnight. Bewildered and elated inmates poured out of jails after rebels blasted away the locks on their cells. Reunited families wept and wailed in joy. Newly freed prisoners were filmed at dawn running through the Damascus streets holding up the fingers of both hands to show how many years they had been in prison. "We toppled the regime!" a voice shouted and a prisoner yelled and skipped with delight. As the sun set in Damascus without Assad for the first time, the roads leading into the city were mostly empty, apart from motorcycles carrying armed men and rebel vehicles caked with brownish mud as camouflage. Some men could be seen looting a shopping centre on the road between the capital and the Lebanese border, stuffing goods into plastic bags or into pick-up trucks. The myriad checkpoints lining the road to Damascus were empty. Posters of Assad had been torn at his eyes. A burning Syrian military truck was parked diagonally on the road out of the city. A thick column of black smoke billowed out from the Mazzeh neighbourhood, where Israeli strikes earlier had targeted Syrian state security branches, according to two security sources. Throughout the evening, intermittent gunfire rang out throughout the city in apparent celebration. Shops and restaurants closed early in line with a curfew imposed by the rebels. Just before it came into effect, people could be seen briskly walking home with stacks of bread. Earlier, the rebels said they had entered the capital with no sign of army deployments. Thousands of people in cars and on foot congregated at a main square in Damascus waving and chanting "Freedom". People were seen walking inside the Al-Rawda Presidential Palace, with some leaving carrying furniture from inside. A motorcycle was parked on the intricately-laid parquet floor of a gilded hall. Golani, whose group was once Syria's branch of al Qaeda but has since softened its image to reassure members of minority sects and foreign countries, said there was no room for turning back. "The future is ours," he said in a statement read on state TV. The Syrian rebel coalition said it was working to complete the transfer of power to a transitional governing body with executive powers. "The great Syrian revolution has moved from the stage of struggle to overthrow the Assad regime to the struggle to build a Syria together that befits the sacrifices of its people," it added in a statement. Mohammad Ghazi al-Jalali, prime minister under Assad, called for free elections and said he had been in contact with Golani to discuss the transitional period. Jubilant supporters of the revolt stormed Syrian embassies in a number of cities around the world, lowering red, white and black Assad-era flags and replacing them with the green, white and black flag flown throughout the war by his opponents. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Assad's fall was a direct result of blows Israel had dealt to Iran and its Lebanese ally Hezbollah, once the lynchpin of Assad's security forces but pounded by Israel over the last two months. French President Emmanuel Macron said "the barbaric state has fallen" and paid tribute to the Syrian people. When the celebrations fade, Syria's new leaders will face the daunting task of trying to deliver stability to a diverse country that will need billions of dollars in aid to rebuild. During the civil war, which erupted in 2011 as an uprising against Assad, his forces and their Russian allies bombed cities to rubble. The refugee crisis across the Middle East was one of the biggest of modern times and caused a political reckoning in Europe when a million people arrived in 2015. President Joe Biden's administration was monitoring developments but has not adjusted the positioning of the US troops, officials told Reuters. The biggest strategic losers were Russia and Iran, which had intervened in the war's early years to rescue Assad, helping him recapture most territory and all major cities. The front lines were frozen four years ago under a deal Russia and Iran reached with Turkey. Even after Assad had fled, Israel continued to strike targets associated with his government and its Iranian-backed allies, including one in Damascus where Israel had previously accused Iran of developing missiles. Netanyahu said the toppling of Assad could make it easier for Israel to reach a ceasefire deal to free hostages in Gaza. On Sunday rebels stormed Iran's embassy, Iran's English-language Press TV reported. Iran's foreign ministry said Syria's fate was the sole responsibility of the Syrian people. Hezbollah had pulled all its remaining forces from Syria on Saturday, two Lebanese security sources said. The farmers were stopped by security forces during their march to Delhi, prompting a push for their longstanding demands, including a legal guarantee for Minimum Support Price (MSP) for crops. Speaking with IANS, Sarwan Singh Pandher emphasised the strong support for the bandh, stating, "Three crore Punjabis have joined this protest, and around 95-97 per cent of the traffic across Punjab is halted. At Golden Gate, langar was organised from 5:00 a.m. to support the cause. Reports indicate roadblocks at multiple locations in Amritsar." Highlighting their demands, Pandher said, "The MSP guarantee is essential for the country's economy and the health of its farmers. Chicago at Detroit, 12:30 p.m., CBS: Rookie quarterback Caleb Williams and the Bears go against the Lions, who are one of the favorites to reach the Super Bowl in February. Lions favored by 10. New York at Dallas, 4:30 p.m., Fox: The Giants and Cowboys are both suffering through miserable seasons and are now using backup quarterbacks for different reasons. Although the Falcons (6-6) hold a tiebreaker after sweeping the season series between the teams, Tampa Bay can control its own destiny by finishing strong against a less than imposing schedule. The Bucs, who are back in the thick of the race after beating the New York Giants and Carolina Panthers, figure to be favored in four of their five remaining games. “Every week, we said it’s a playoff game, we got to take care of us. It’s not going to be easy. "Equities are kind of treading water," said LBBW's Karl Haeling. "A negative influence to some extent is the rise in bond yields." The latest US consumer price index data released this week showed prices ticked higher in November and the wholesale data also showed stubborn inflationary pressures. "Yields rose to their highest levels in over two weeks as markets brace for the Federal Reserve's final meeting of the year, reflecting concerns over sticky inflation," said Chris Beauchamp, chief market analyst at online trading platform IG. There is also growing concern over the inflationary pressures from President-elect Donald Trump's pledges to cut taxes and impose tariffs, as inflation still stands above the Fed's target. "While the markets still anticipate a rate cut from the Federal Reserve next week, the likelihood of a move in January has dropped," said Patrick Munnelly, partner at broker Tickmill Group. The CME FedWatch tool shows the market sees a more than 75 percent chance that the Fed will hold rates steady in January. In Europe, the Paris CAC 40 index ended the day down 0.2 percent after French President Emmanuel Macron named his centrist ally Francois Bayrou as prime minister, ending days of deadlock over finding a replacement for Michel Barnier. VICTORIA — British Columbia Premier David Eby says 25-per-cent U.S. tariffs on Canadian goods would be "devastating" for the province's lumber and forestry industries. He made the comment ahead of a meeting with fellow first ministers and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. Eby was scheduled to participate in the virtual meeting on Wednesday to discuss U.S. president-elect Donald Trump's threat to impose the tariffs unless Canada and Mexico stop illegal border crossings and prevent illicit drugs from entering the United States. Eby said the lumber and forestry sectors are already strained by a recent increase in duties amid the ongoing U.S.-Canada dispute over softwood lumber. He said after the first meeting of his new cabinet in Victoria that the tariffs are "unjustified," and they would hurt Americans as much as they would Canadians. The premier said B.C. is a source of natural gas, wood products, minerals and other products that U.S. businesses depend on, and the tariff would hinder jobs and opportunities in the province while making "life more expensive for Americans." Eby and Ottawa have called for a united front dealing with Trump's tariff plan, which he announced on social media on Monday. Eby said B.C. officials had repeatedly raised concerns with Ottawa over organized crime and illicit drugs, such as fentanyl, in relation to border security. "It's a priority for us. It has been for a while, we've written to Ottawa about it. Doesn't justify the tariffs, but it does mean that we can talk about those issues as well." Eby said Trump's proposed tariff "doesn't make economic sense," and the measure is not necessary to address issues at the border. (AP) — A law requiring Missouri voters to show government-issued photo identification to cast regular ballots will stand after a lower-court judge found it constitutional Tuesday. Cole County Circuit Judge Jon Beetem’s decision upholds the law, which was made possible by a 2016 voter-approved constitutional amendment allowing lawmakers to enact photo ID requirements. “To maintain a secure system for voting, it only stands to reason that a photo ID should be essential,” Missouri Republican Secretary of State Jay Ashcroft said in a statement praising the ruling. Voter photo ID supporters such as Ashcroft say the practice prevents voter fraud and improves public confidence in election results. Voting rights advocates say getting the records needed to obtain proper photo identification can be challenging, especially for older voters and people with disabilities. The National Conference of State Legislatures reports 36 states request or require identification to vote, of which at least 21 ask for a photo ID. Under Missouri’s law, people without government-issued photo identification can cast provisional ballots to be counted if they return later that day with a photo ID or if election officials verify their signatures. The law also requires the state to provide a free photo identification card to those lacking one to vote. Missouri’s NAACP and League of Women Voters, along with two individual voters, sued to overturn the law in 2022. They argued that some voters faced substantial obstacles getting up-to-date and accurate government-issued photo IDs and worried that casting a provisional ballot could put them at higher risk of having their votes not counted. Beetem initially dismissed the lawsuit , finding neither of the two individual voters “alleged a specific, concrete, non-speculative injury or legally protectable interest in challenging the photo ID requirement.” The Missouri ACLU and Missouri Voter Protection Coalition, who sued on behalf of the plaintiffs, in response added another voter to the lawsuit and asked Beetem again to find the voter ID requirement unconstitutional. Beetem noted in his Tuesday ruling that all of the individual plaintiffs have successfully voted since the law took effect. “Their claim that their provisional ballots may be rejected is purely speculative,” Beetem wrote. “In addition, the evidence at trial confirms that rejection rates for provisional ballots are low, and the rates specifically for signature-mismatch are exceedingly low.” He concluded that the law’s rules on photo identification “protect the fundamental right to vote by deterring difficult to detect forms of voter fraud.” Lawyers for the plaintiffs said they will appeal Beetem’s ruling. “The League believes the state should be making it easier, not harder, for Missourians to exercise their fundamental right to vote,” Missouri League of Women Voters President Marilyn McLeod said in a statement. “There’s no evidence of voter impersonation in Missouri, so these restrictions don’t make our elections any safer or more secure.” Don't let this be the end of the free press. In response to concerns about the growing number of homeless people in the commonwealth, the Healey-Driscoll administration awarded nearly $10 million in supplemental grants to 15 communities to open or expand winter shelter bed capacity. The South Middlesex Opportunity Council, a private, nonprofit social services agency based out of Framingham, that operates the Lowell Transitional Living Center on Middlesex Street in Downtown Lowell, received $255,326 for 26 additional winter beds. Shelters are run by nonprofit organizations that receive funding from the state. The Sun has learned that those extra beds will be at the Best Western in Chelmsford. Hotels in the town have been used for housing homeless people for more than a decade. Town Manager Paul Cohen could not immediately be reached for comment Friday, but Cohen has previously described the town’s contribution to the homeless crisis as “we just do it in a Chelmsford way” by assisting those in need. “Our methodology is simple,” he said during remarks at a Community Teamwork Gala in May, recognizing Cohen as one of the Champions of Community Action. “We just respond quietly to those in need. Move away from the indifference and the labeling that dehumanizes the individual.” LTLC is located at 205-209 Middlesex St., and is the primary destination for any unhoused individual adult seeking shelter in the city of Lowell. The shelter offers both day and night services with intake for emergency shelter placement processed between 10 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. Community Teamwork Director of Communications Kathleen Plath said the community action agency works with LTLC, which “triages” homeless clients for shelter resources. “We are the provider at the Best Western,” Plath said by text on Friday. “We are providing wrap around services for the current and future homeless individuals there.” The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development defines individuals as homeless if they lack a “fixed, regular and adequate nighttime address.” The Massachusetts Coalition for the Homeless said there are almost 200,000 adults experiencing homeless in the commonwealth. In January, Lowell conducted its annual, federally mandated point-in-time count of the number of people experiencing homelessness, and found there were 189 sheltered and 97 unsheltered individuals in the city. The grants were awarded through the Executive Office of Housing and Livable Communities, which annually supports 2,514 year-round beds and 363 winter beds for individuals experiencing homelessness. The funding announced Friday will support 595 additional winter beds and will expand daytime warming centers to prevent unsheltered homelessness during the cold winter months. “Our nonprofit community partners provide a lifeline to individuals who are struggling with the very basic need of a safe place to lay their head at night,” EOHLC Secretary Ed Augustus said in a statement. “In addition, these organizations are well-equipped to connect individuals with other important services ranging from behavioral health to the search for permanent housing, which helps lift people out of homelessness.” Applicants for the grants were required to demonstrate how the proposed projects would support EOHLC’s overall vision of making homelessness rare, brief and nonrecurring. Priority was given to applicants serving regions with the highest need for shelter beds. LTLC is a client-centered emergency shelter that has provided shelter and care to adults for 38 years, and is now the largest homeless shelter and support organization north of Boston. From November to April, LTLC operates the Winter Emergency Bed Program to provide an extra 30 cots to supplement its 90 regular overnight beds. The facility offers toileting and bathing facilities, laundry, meals, case-management and harm-reduction services, addiction counseling, HIV testing, and health care for homeless people. EOHLC conducted a walk-through inspection of the five-story congregate living facility in November, and found zero violations. The report looked at pest control management; compliance with food, fire and building code regulations; infrastructure integrity; accessibility; and other conditions. “Despite there being VERY many people sleeping in the building each night, the site was surprisingly free from clutter,” noted the Nov. 14 report. “All passageways were free from obstruction ... Prosecutors say Rundo co-founded the Rise Above Movement, which they describe as “a combat-ready, militant group of a new nationalist white supremacy and identity movement.” He and two others were accused of planning and engaging in violence at gatherings in Huntington Beach, Berkeley and San Bernardino in 2017. Rundo was arrested in 2018 for inciting violence at California protests and at a deadly riot in Charlottesville, Virginia. A federal court dismissed the charges in 2019, but they were reinstated by a federal appeals court in 2021. Rundo had left the United States after the charges were dismissed and was extradited last year from Romania when they were reinstated.
