A judge on Monday rejected a request to block a San Jose State women’s volleyball team member from playing in a conference tournament on grounds that she is transgender. Monday’s ruling by U.S. Magistrate Judge S. Kato Crews in Denver will allow the player, who has played all season, to compete in the Mountain West Conference women’s championship opening this week in Las Vegas. The ruling comes in a lawsuit filed by nine current players against the Mountain West Conference challenging the league’s policies for allowing transgender players to participate. The players argued that letting her compete was a safety risk and unfair. While some media have reported those and other details, neither San Jose State nor the forfeiting teams have confirmed the school has a trans woman volleyball player. The Associated Press is withholding the player’s name because she has not commented publicly on her gender identity. School officials also have declined an interview request with the player. Crews' ruling referred to the athlete as an “alleged transgender” player and noted that no defendant disputed that the San Jose State roster includes a transgender woman player. San Jose State will "continue to support its student-athletes and reject discrimination in all forms," the university said in a statement, confirming that all its student-athletes are eligible to participate under NCAA and conference rules. “We are gratified that the Court rejected an eleventh-hour attempt to change those rules. Our team looks forward to competing in the Mountain West volleyball tournament this week." The conference did not immediately respond to an email seeking comment. The players filed a notice for emergency appeal with the 10th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. Crews said the players who filed the complaint could have sought relief much earlier, noting the individual universities had acknowledged that not playing their games against San Jose State this season would result in a loss in league standings. He also refused a request to re-seed the tournament without the forfeited losses. The judge said injunctions are meant to preserve the status quo. The conference policy regarding forfeiting for refusing to play against a team with a transgender player had been in effect since 2022 and the San Jose State player has been on the roster since 2022 -– making that the status quo. The player competed at the college level three previous seasons, including two for San Jose State, drawing little attention. This season’s awareness of her reported identity led to an uproar among some players, pundits, parents and politicians in a major election year. Crews' ruling also said injunctions are meant to prevent harm, but in this case, he argued, the harm has already occurred. The games have been forfeited, the tournament has been seeded, the teams have made travel plans and the participants have confirmed they're playing. The tournament starts Wednesday and continues Friday and Saturday. Colorado State is seeded first and San Jose State, second. The teams split their regular-season matches and both get byes into Friday's semifinals. Story continues below video The conference tournament winner gets an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament. San Jose State coach Todd Kress, whose team has not competed in the national tournament since 2001, has said his team has been getting “messages of hate” and that has taken a toll on his players. Several teams refused to play against San Jose State during the season, earning losses in the official conference standings. Boise State and Wyoming each had two forfeits while Utah State and Nevada both had one. Southern Utah, a member of the Western Athletic Conference, was first to cancel against San Jose State this year. Nevada’s players stated they “refuse to participate in any match that advances injustice against female athletes,” without elaborating. Nevada did not qualify for the conference tournament. The nine current players and others now suing the Mountain West Conference, the California State University Board of Trustees and others include San Jose State senior setter and co-captain Brooke Slusser. The teammate Slusser says is transgender hits the volleyball with more force than others on the team, raising fear during practices of suffering concussions from a head hit, the complaint says. The Independent Council on Women’s Sports is funding a separate lawsuit against the NCAA for allowing transgender women to compete in women’s sports. Both lawsuits claim the landmark 1972 federal antidiscrimination law known as Title IX prohibits transgender women in women’s sports. Title IX prohibits sexual discrimination in federally funded education; Slusser is a plaintiff in both lawsuits. Several circuit courts have used a U.S. Supreme Court ruling to conclude that discriminating against someone based on their transgender status or sexual orientation is sex-based discrimination, Crews wrote. That means case law does not prove the “likelihood of success” needed to grant an injunction. An NCAA policy that subjects transgender participation to the rules of sports governing bodies took effect this academic year. The Republican governors of Idaho, Nevada, Utah and Wyoming have made public statements in support of the team cancellations, citing fairness in women’s sports. Nissan has truck-based body-on-frame large SUVs such as the Armada and Infiniti QX80 that Honda doesn't have, with large towing capacities and good off-road performance, said Sam Fiorani, vice president of AutoForecast Solutions. Nissan also has years of experience building batteries and electric vehicles, and gas-electric hybird powertrains that could help Honda in developing its own EVs and next generation of hybrids, he said. "Nissan does have some product segments where Honda doesn't currently play," that a merger or partnership could help, said Sam Abuelsamid, a Detroit-area automotive industry analsyt. While Nissan's electric Leaf and Ariya haven't sold well in the U.S., they're solid vehicles, Fiorani said. "They haven't been resting on their laurels, and they have been developing this technology," he said. "They have new products coming that could provide a good platform for Honda for its next generation." Why now? Nissan said last month that it was slashing 9,000 jobs, or about 6% of its global work force, and reducing global production capacity by 20% after reporting a quarterly loss of 9.3 billion yen ($61 million). Earlier this month it reshuffled its management and its chief executive, Makoto Uchida, took a 50% pay cut to take responsibility for the financial woes, saying Nissan needed to become more efficient and respond better to market tastes, rising costs and other global changes. Fitch Ratings recently downgraded Nissan's credit outlook to "negative," citing worsening profitability, partly due to price cuts in the North American market. But it noted that it has a strong financial structure and solid cash reserves that amounted to 1.44 trillion yen ($9.4 billion). Even after a merger Toyota would remain the leading Japanese automaker. Nissan is among the major car companies that have adjusted their supply chains to include vehicles assembled in Mexico. The Civic falls short slightly in the IIHS' updated moderate overlap front test, which now accounts for rear passenger safety, but even so, it's one of the safest cars in its class. 2025 Mini Cooper Reflective of parent company BMW, today's Mini Cooper is well constructed and features premium safety features that belie its small size, including automatic emergency braking and forward collision warning. Although the Mini hasn't been tested by NHTSA, the IIHS gives the Cooper its highest score of Good in the original driver-side small overlap front, moderate overlap front, and side-impact tests. That said, the IIHS doesn't place the Cooper on its Top Safety Pick or Top Safety Pick+ lists since it hasn't been evaluated on the updated battery of passenger-side small overlap front, moderate overlap front, or side-impact tests. Expect the new-for-2025 Mini Cooper to earn decent crash ratings in those scenarios, especially since it shares its strong platform with the outgoing model. 2025 Toyota Prius With its recent redesign, the Toyota Prius transformed from a frumpy little caterpillar to a stylish and efficient butterfly. It also became a very safe hybrid hatchback. Perfect scores in all of its government and IIHS crash tests, as well as a sophisticated system of collision avoidance technology, earn it top marks. The Camry edges out the Accord in IIHS testing thanks to a more effective collision avoidance system, but both cars are remarkably well matched otherwise. 2025 Hyundai Ioniq 6 The fully electric Hyundai Ioniq 6 offers excellent safety and collision prevention, with excellent scores across the entire line of IIHS tests. The Ioniq 6 hasn't been tested for rollover resistance by NHTSA, but it earned a four-star front safety rating and a five-star side-impact rating in government tests. Like most EVs, the Hyundai Ioniq 6 comes standard with forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, and lane departure prevention. It also offers up to 342 miles of all-electric driving in its longest-range trim level. Safest Luxury Cars 2025 Acura Integra The Acura Integra is a close mechanical cousin to the Honda Civic, so it's no surprise it does well in both the IIHS' and NHTSA's crash tests. The luxury hatchback is a Top Safety Pick+ and earns a perfect five stars in government testing. The AcuraWatch safety suite is standard on the Integra, bringing automatic emergency braking, lane centering, lane departure prevention, and adaptive cruise control. 2025 Mercedes-Benz C-Class The Mercedes-Benz C-Class is a safe option in the popular small luxury sedan segment thanks to its good scores in IIHS crash testing. Mercedes' best-selling sedan also comes standard with automatic emergency braking and forward collision warning, which helps it earn a Top Safety Pick award. However, it hasn't been tested by the NHTSA. 2025 Genesis G80 Both the Genesis G80 and the fully electric Genesis Electrified G80 earn a Top Safety Pick+ score from the IIHS thanks to their good scores on the agency's crash tests, as well as a comprehensive suite of active safety features that avoided collisions with simulated pedestrians. Unfortunately, since it hasn't been tested with the updated versions of those tests, it didn't earn this year's Top Safety Pick award, but it was called a Top Safety Pick+ in 2022. NHTSA also gives the V60 a five-star safety rating. 2025 Mercedes-Benz E 450 All-Terrain Although the Mercedes-Benz E 450 All-Terrain isn't a traditional wagon — it follows the lifted almost-crossover formula shared with the Audi A6 Allroad and Volvo V90 Cross Country — we'll take what we can get in this dwindling category. The All-Terrain hasn't been tested by the IIHS or NHTSA, but a previous-generation E-Class earned a 2023 Top Safety Pick+ award, and Mercedes isn't the kind of company that goes backward when it comes to safety. The E 450 All-Terrain comes standard with automatic emergency braking and forward collision warning, though, at this price, Benz should just make other active safety features standard. 2025 Audi A6 Allroad With a five-star NHTSA safety rating, standard forward collision warning and emergency braking, and excellent IIHS crashworthiness scores on its original tests, the Audi A6 Allroad does a good job protecting people (both passengers and pedestrians) from crashes. However, since the IIHS hasn't subjected the Allroad to its updated side and moderate front crash criteria, it lost its Top Safety Pick+ status in 2022. Still, it should be a fine option for luxury longroof shoppers. Safest Coupes and Convertibles 2025 Ford Mustang Both the Ford Mustang coupe and convertible perform well in crash testing. The coupe received a five-star safety rating from NHTSA, and both variants scored decently on all the IIHS tests they've undergone. They also come standard with forward collision warning, lane departure prevention, and automatic emergency braking. However, the IIHS needs to test both models on its updated criteria before it will rate them. 2025 Toyota GR86 Although the government hasn't tested it, the Toyota GR86 aced all of its IIHS crashworthiness tests when it was new for the 2022 model year. Unfortunately, since it hasn't been subjected to the IIHS' updated testing since then, it lost its Top Safety Pick+ status. Still, this is a fun-to-drive, sporty coupe that comes standard with a long list of active safety features, and it's reasonably priced to boot. 2025 Subaru BRZ Mechanically identical to the Toyota GR86, the 2025 Subaru BRZ achieves the same safety ratings—who would have thought? It likewise received a Top Safety Pick+ score in 2022 that lapsed when the IIHS updated its criteria for 2023, but like the Toyota, it has a long list of active safety features to go along with its lightweight, rip-roaring sports car attitude. 2025 Audi A5 The Audi A5 lost its traditional two-door coupe body style after 2024, but the five-door Sportback body style remains before it's replaced later in 2025. Although it hasn't seen the IIHS' more stringent test regimen, its original crashworthiness scores were good enough to earn it a Top Safety Pick award as recently as 2022. The Alberta Gaming Liquor and Cannabis’s (AGLC) Tobacco Enforcement Unit and its partnering law enforcement agencies shared Monday that they made three successful seizures in November. In total, they found a combined 28,000 cartons of contraband cigarettes with a provincial tax avoidance value of about $1.7 million. The seizures were made: The AGLC says criminal charges are pending for all cases. “Contraband tobacco takes away significant provincial tax revenue that supports health care, public safety and essential services that all Albertans use on a day-to-day basis,” said Kandice Machado, AGLC CEO. “These contraband investigations are part of AGLC’s continued commitment with our provincial partners to combat the rise of illegal tobacco and criminal activities in Alberta.” The organization adds that these contraband products are illegally manufactured and pose health and safety risks as they lack regulatory controls and inspections. As they wait for a taxi Hannah and Nathan chat about how they are the only ones not in a couple this weekend and Nathan jokes that Hannah had better not try it on becasue Kate wouldn't be happy. They are checking a prenup and decide that it shouldn't be signed... and Nathan announces that he gives the marriage a year, tops. Nina and Rose use the opportunity to tell Nathan about Hannha's dates with Archie and Hannah downplays it and changes the subject by laughing about Nathan's new earring. It turns out it is Hannah and Nathan's daughter, Liv, who is getting married in Barcelona and she arrives in a taxi to collect all her family, thrilled to see them all. The couple are the picture of happiness and talk about Liv and Gael's prenup, joking that they wrote their own on a napkin many years ago. As they are given the guided tour of the fancy vineyard Nathan asks Hannah when she is going to be ready to put their family home up for sale. He wants his share of the capital so that he and Kate can move with their two young children, but Hannah is adamant that while she might have an empty nest at the moment, their kids will be back sooner rather than later. As the Defoes settle into the vineyard's fancy outhouse, Valentina tells Hannah that there are drinks for friends and family on the lawn in an hour and that she really wants her to encourage Liv to sign the prenup. While she gets ready Hannah sees a paper flower that Archie made for her on their last date, not only has she kept it but she has also brought it with her to Spain - but while she is reflecting on Archie, Rose knocks on the door and raids her welcome pack while telling her sister that her boyfriend, Glen, has gone to check out the chapel while Nina also comes in and they talk about Julian, her boyfriend who Rose says is rich but boring! While Nathan reads out the itinerary for the day, taking the mickey out of the organised fun, Rose, Nina and Hannah can't take him seriously with his earring. Meanwhile, Hannah goes inside to get the fizz as Alvaro comes out onto the neighbouring balcony arguing with someone, who turns out to be Archie, the man who Hannah was dating at the start of the episode. Archie is Alvaro's lawyer and family friend, and Hannah has no idea, so when she comes back out onto the balcony she is so shocked to see him standing there that she sprays Cava all over herself. After making a hasty retreat back into her room, an amused Rose and Nina follow her in, full of questions, the penny dropping that this Archie is THE Archie that Hannah has been dating and mysteriously ended things with without warning. While Hannah struggles to recall exactly why she ended things with Archie, Nina is convinced this fate is giving her a second chance at happiness. However, as they gather for the pre-wedding drinks it turns out Nina has told everyone about Archie and her whole family teases her about her former flame being at the wedding. As the drinks get underway Nathan compliments Hannah on how nice she looks while she goes in search of wine. But while she is looking, Rose finds her and points out that Nina's annoying boyfriend Julien has a box-shaped bulge in his suit trouser pocket. Before they can discuss this any further, though, the waiter offers them more wine, which Hannah eagerly accepts but Rose instantly turns it down, making Hannah realise that her little sister is pregnant. Nina overhears them and comes over excitedly to hug Rose, but she doesn't want any fuss becasue she's only 5 or 6 weeks gone and it's too early to get excited after she miscarried the last time she was pregnant. Talk then turns to Archie after Rose and Nina admit to having stalked his socials, and it turns out he has a son a little older than Liv and he likes sunsets and climbing mountains. But as they ask Hannah what is holding her back a glamorous woman comes and takes his arm, and it turns out he has bought a 'friend'. But not everything is as it seems becasue Archie doesn't look very happy with Wren, despite the fact Wren announces to the whole family that they are engaged, which shocks Hannah and she finds more wine to hide her horror. Archie tracks Hannah down while Valentina and Alvaro are making a speech and tries to explain that his decision to come to the wedding was last minute and reminds her that she was the one who walked out on him. Soon it is Hannah's turn to make a speech and while it starts out well things soon turn when she starts talking about trust and it becomes clear that she is talking about Archie. The hens head on their night out and while everyone is enjoying the party Nina seems horrified at the thought of Julian asking her to marry him, but soon she is thinking of other things when Lola, who works at the vineyard, whisks her off to dance. Meanwhile, the stags are sitting around a table at the vineyard, sampling some of Alvaro's best wines and talking about the women in their lives. As Gael sings Liv's praises, Prof Ronnie talks about Ruth and Nathan talks about the love of his life, but accidentally talks about Hannah and not Kate - and when he does talk about Kate it isn't a very glowing report! (NASDAQ: AMBA), an edge AI semiconductor company, today announced financial results for its third quarter of fiscal year 2025 ended October 31, 2024. Revenue for the third quarter of fiscal 2025 was $82.7 million, up 63% from $50.6 million in the same period in fiscal 2024. For the nine months ended October 31, 2024, revenue was $200.9 million, up 15% from $174.9 million for the nine months ended October 31, 2023. Gross margin under U.S. generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) for the third quarter of fiscal 2025 was 60.6%, compared with 59.3% for the same period in fiscal 2024. For the nine months ended October 31, 2024, GAAP gross margin was 60.7%, compared with 60.6% for the nine months ended October 31, 2023. GAAP net loss for the third quarter of fiscal 2025 was $24.1 million, or loss per diluted ordinary share of $0.58, compared with GAAP net loss of $41.7 million, or loss per diluted ordinary share of $1.04, for the same period in fiscal 2024. GAAP net loss for the nine months ended October 31, 2024 was $96.9 million or loss per diluted ordinary share of $2.36. Abbotsford's Devon Toews has been selected to wear Canadian colours for the upcoming 4 Nations Face-Off event. The National Hockey League Players’ Association and the National Hockey League announced the final 23-player rosters selected by the respective federations on Dec. 4. Toews was one of seven defenceman named to the team. He joins Colorado Avalanche teammate Cale Makar and Aldergrove's Shea Theodore from the Vegas Golden Knights and four others on the backend. Canada's forwards consist of Pittsburgh's Sidney Crosby, Nathan MacKinnon from Colorado, Edmonton's Connor McDavid and 10 others. He suited up for the Surrey Eagles of the British Columbia Hockey League and then earned a scholarship at Quinnipiac. He signed a seven-year, $50.75 million contract extension with the Avs in 2023.Whenever someone assures you that another person you’re both dealing with “understands” the “quid pro quo,” you’d be wise to run away as fast as you can and never look back. But that’s exactly how then-Ald. Daniel Solis assured then-House Speaker Michael Madigan in late June of 2017 that their mark — the developers of a West Loop apartment complex — would eventually be convinced to retain Madigan’s property tax appeals law firm. Solis chaired the powerful Zoning Committee, so the developers had to come through him, and Solis said they would understand the game: The developers hire Madigan’s law firm and their zoning changes would be approved. “I think they understand how this works,” Solis told Madigan. “The quid pro quo.” Solis admitted on the stand during Madigan’s corruption trial that what he said to Madigan was “dumb.” Madigan didn’t know that the federal government was recording all his conversations with Solis. So, what was dumb about what Solis said is that Madigan might’ve immediately cut all ties to Solis, and Solis’ federal handlers would’ve been furious that he let the target get away. Turns out, the real dummy was Madigan. Madigan didn’t walk away. Instead, he kept going back to Solis, only gently admonishing him weeks later by telling Solis not to say the quiet part out loud and instructing him in the polite way of conducting business. And then a few months later, while talking about another real estate deal, Solis asked whether the West Loop developers had signed on with Madigan’s firm. Madigan didn’t say, but appeared to give Solis the go-ahead to process their zoning request. “You were contemplating processing something,” Madigan said. “You should go ahead and process that.” Feds make their point The feds are also trying to prove that Madigan’s consigliere, longtime lobbyist and fellow defendant Mike McClain, wasn’t just freelancing without Madigan’s approval when it came to all the demands McClain was making of Commonwealth Edison. The trial so far has given the feds big wins on that point. Madigan and Solis were in discussions about the state transferring a Chinatown parking lot to the City of Chicago so that it could be developed into a hotel, and Madigan could get the property tax business. So, he told Solis to reach out to McClain. McClain would give the developer “some ideas about how to go about it.” A couple of months later, Solis again brought up the Chinatown parcel to Madigan. “Let me get back into it and, and, um, see if there’s some way to find somebody that can talk to IDOT. That, that’s where the decision’s going to be made,” Madigan said. “I’m trying to figure out a way to approach it,” Madigan later told Solis about the parcel. He appeared to be calculating how he could pass a bill to benefit his law firm without leaving any overt fingerprints. Madigan eventually told Solis that one of the Chinatown developers would soon be receiving a call from McClain. The effort to transfer the property extended into the spring of 2018 for several reasons, most importantly opposition from local legislators. In March of 2018, Madigan told Solis that maybe McClain should talk to the senator who was putting a brick on the land transfer, and then explained to Solis at length how this particular legislation could shorten the time it would take to transfer the property to the city. From there, jurors heard recordings about the intricacies of passing the bill, including who was blocking it. McClain is heard on a recording briefing Madigan about which legislators were opposing the bill and about how the then-secretary of transportation was “getting squeamish” about it. Also in March, Solis told Madigan that if Madigan could “take care of that [Chinatown] matter in May,” during the end of spring session, “I’m confident they’ll appreciate it and ... sign you up on after May.” Madigan didn’t run away then, either. But the bill eventually died and a possible payday was missed. On May 28, 2018, a few days before the scheduled end of spring session when there was still hope the bill would advance, McClain called a member of Madigan’s House staff to tell them about the property tax transfer bill, “that deals with a developer of [Madigan’s].” McClain told the staffer: “He wants to make sure he votes ‘present.’” In other words, if the feds didn’t have Madigan, McClain and Solis on numerous recordings, Madigan could’ve officially covered his rear by voting “present” on a bill that would’ve potentially padded his pockets and that he’d allegedly been actively pushing behind the scenes for months on end.
