DENVER — So you're the most valuable player of that annual Thanksgiving Day backyard flag football game. Or played tackle football on any level. Or ran track. Or dabbled in basketball. Or toyed with any sport, really. Well, this may be just for you: USA Football is holding talent identification camps all over the country to find that next flag football star. It's "America's Got Talent" meets "American Idol," with the stage being the field and the grand prize a chance to compete for a spot on a national team. Because it's never too early to start planning for the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles, where flag football will make its Summer Games debut. Know this, though — it's not an easy team to make. The men's and women's national team rosters are at "Dream Team" status given the men's side has captured six of the last seven world championships and the women three in a row. To remain on top, the sport's national governing body is scouring every football field, park, track, basketball court and gym to find hidden talent to cultivate. USA Football has organized camps and tryouts from coast to coast for anyone ages 11 to 23. There are more than a dozen sites set up so far, ranging from Dallas (Sunday) to Chicago (Dec. 14) to Tampa (March 29) to Los Angeles (TBD) and the Boston area (April 27), where it will be held at Gillette Stadium, home of the New England Patriots. The organization has already partnered with the NFL on flag football initiatives and programs. The numbers have been through the roof, with engagement on social media platforms increasing by 86% since flag football was announced as an Olympic invitational sport in October 2023. The participation of boys and girls ages 6 to 17 in flag football last year peaked at more than 1.6 million, according to USA Football research. "We pride ourselves on elevating the gold standard across the sport," said Eric Mayes, the managing director of the high performance and national teams for USA Football. "We want to be the best in the world — and stay the best in the world." Flag football was one of five new sports added to the LA28 program. The already soaring profile of American football only figures to be enhanced by an Olympic appearance. Imagine, say, a few familiar faces take the field, too. Perhaps even NFL stars such as Tyreek Hill or Patrick Mahomes, maybe even past pro football greats donning a flag belt for a country to which they may have ties. Soon after flag football's inclusion, there was chatter of NFL players possibly joining in on the fun. Of course, there are logistical issues to tackle before their inclusion at the LA Olympics, which open July 14, 2028. Among them, training camp, because the Olympics will be right in the middle of it. The big question is this: Will owners permit high-priced players to duck out for a gold-medal pursuit? No decisions have yet been made on the status of NFL players for the Olympics. For now, it's simply about growing the game. There are currently 13 states that sanction girls flag football as a high school varsity sport. Just recently, the Pittsburgh Steelers and Philadelphia Eagles helped pave the way to get it adopted in Pennsylvania. Around the world, it's catching on, too. The women's team from Japan took third at the recent word championships, while one of the best players on the planet is Mexico quarterback Diana Flores. "Could flag football globally become the new soccer? That's something to aspire to," said Stephanie Kwok, the NFL's vice president of flag football. This type of flag football though, isn't your Thanksgiving Day game with family and friends. There's a learning curve. And given the small roster sizes, versatility is essential. Most national team members need to be a version of Colorado's two-way standout and Heisman hopeful Travis Hunter. Forget bump-and-run coverage, too, because there's no contact. None. That took some adjusting for Mike Daniels, a defensive back out of West Virginia who earned a rookie minicamp invitation with the Cleveland Browns in 2017. "If a receiver is running around, I'm thinking, 'OK, I can kind of bump him here and there and nudge him,'" Daniels explained. "They're like, 'No, you can't.' I'm just like, 'So I'm supposed to let this guy just run?!' I really rebelled at the idea at first. But you learn." The competition for an Olympic roster spot is going to be fierce because only 10 players are expected to make a squad. The best 10 will earn it, too, as credentials such as college All-American or NFL All-Pro take a backseat. "I would actually love" seeing NFL players try out, said Daniels, who's also a personal trainer in Miami. "I'm not going to let you just waltz in here, thinking, 'I played NFL football for five years. I'm popular. I have a huge name.' I'm still better than you and I'm going to prove it — until you prove otherwise." Around the house, Bruce Mapp constantly swivels his hips when turning a hallway corner or if his daughter tries to reach for a hug. It's his way of working on avoiding a "defender" trying to snare the flag. That approach has earned the receiver out of Coastal Carolina four gold medals with USA Football. The 31-year-old fully plans on going for more gold in Los Angeles. "You grow up watching Usain Bolt (win gold) and the 'Redeem Team' led by Kobe Bryant win a gold medal, you're always thinking, 'That's insane.' Obviously, you couldn't do it in your sport, because I played football," said Mapp, who owns a food truck in the Dallas area. "With the Olympics approaching, that (gold medal) is what my mind is set on." It's a common thought, which is why everything — including talent camps — starts now. "Everybody thinks, 'Yeah, the U.S. just wins,'" Daniels said. "But we work hard all the time. We don't just walk in. We don't just get off the bus thinking, 'We're going to beat people.'"234xl

Editors have highlightedthe following attributes while ensuring the content's credibility: fact-checked trusted source proofread by Delft University of Technology Last week, a 100-meter-long test dune was raised on the coast near Monster. A hybrid dune, consisting of a combination of sand and hard elements. Researchers from TU Delft are monitoring how different configurations erode during stormy weather conditions. This will allow hybrid dyke-dune structures to be designed more efficiently and safely in the future. "We don't know exactly how long the set up will stand. We expect the dune , which is close to the coastline, to completely fade in the next two to three months," predicts Daan Poppema, postdoc Hydraulic Engineering. With hydraulic engineering companies Van den Herik and Boskalis, thousands of cubic meters of sand were moved for the construction of the test dune. This week, the last measuring instruments will be installed, and then the wait for nature's elements begins. The best of both worlds The Dutch coastline is traditionally protected by sandy dunes and hard dykes. The coast is being protected with hybrid dunes more often now, such as the dyke-in-dune constructions in Noordwijk, Katwijk and Groede. The idea is to combine the best of both worlds. Dunes match the natural character of the Dutch coast and help valuable nature. In addition, dunes can grow with sea level rise . Dykes, on the other hand, offer better erosion resistance than dunes. Due to interactions between sandy and hard elements, erosion occurs differently in hybrid dunes compared to sand dunes. The Hybrid Dune field experiment is a unique opportunity to better understand this process. The test dune consists of four different cross sections: A sandy dune; a dyke (sand covered with hard dyke slope); a dyke-in-dune (dyke slope covered with sand); and a barrier-in-dune (a core of containers in the dune). Measuring during storms Thanks to colleagues and Civil Engineering students, the test dune and shoreline are equipped with a wide range of measuring instruments. Says Poppema, "With the sensors we will measure the water flow, height of the waves and erosion of sand." When storms are approaching, researchers and students spring into action. Then drones and LiDAR (laser) take additional measurements to map dune erosion. Climate adaptation The dune is close to the high-water mark. This way, it will be possible to observe effects of extreme weather conditions as early as next year. "We don't want to wait 10 years for that one extreme storm, so at this carefully chosen location we are deliberately placing the dune in a vulnerable position," he says. Sea level rise and extreme weather events increase the urgency to work on new technical and natural solutions for climate-adaptive coasts and rivers. Provided by Delft University of Technology

Contact: Drew Thomas ( [email protected] )Google CEO Sundar Pichai was expected to fly to Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago residence on Thursday to meet with the president-elect, according to a report. Pichai is just the latest billionaire tech executive from whom Trump has sought counsel, along with Tesla founder Elon Musk and Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, according to The Information . But this meeting comes after years of Trump accusing the massive search engine of fervent anti-conservative – and anti-Trump – bias. Meanwhile, the United States government is considering whether to break up Google after a judge in August ruled that the search engine is a monopoly . As president, Trump could influence the weight of the penalty Google will face for operating an illegal monopoly. As Pichai tries to warm up to Trump, he faces significant obstacles – including Musk, who owns Tesla, SpaceX, xAI and X, formerly known as Twitter. Musk became a close confidant to Trump during the course of his campaign, joining him onstage at rallies and at his Mar-a-Lago residence on election night – and donating a massive $250 million to his campaign and pro-Trump PACs. His companies compete directly with Google’s artificial intelligence ventures and Waymo, its self-driving car unit. Musk reportedly caught Pichai by surprise when he hopped on a phone call between the Google executive and Trump last month, according to The Information . During Trump’s first campaign and presidency, Pichai criticized the Republican president on his “Muslim ban.” “Let’s not let fear defeat our values,” Pichai wrote in a blog post in 2015 after Trump, then a candidate, proposed the ban. He doubled down in 2017, after Trump signed an executive order banning refugees from Muslim-majority countries, saying Google would “fight” the ban. Trump has sung a different tune on Google in recent months, defending the company and saying it should not be broken up, but he has still filled his incoming cabinet with anti-Google picks. Trump tapped Google critic Gail Slater to lead the Justice Department’s antitrust efforts and signaled his administration would continue going after tech giants. “Big Tech has run wild for years,” Trump said in a post on Truth Social announcing he would nominate Slater. Brendan Carr, Trump’s pick to lead the Federal Communications Commission, has similarly slammed Google in the past for squashing conservative voices. Pichai is not expected to try any negotiations on the antitrust lawsuit or future regulations during his meeting with Trump, a person briefed on the plans told The Information. Tech leaders are scrambling to curry favor with Trump ahead of his second administration as they fear intense regulatory scrutiny. Meta’s Mark Zuckerberg traveled to Mar-a-Lago to meet with the president two weeks ago and Meta donated $1 million to Trump’s inaugural fund, according to The Wall Street Journal. Billionaire Amazon founder Jeff Bezos is planning to meet with Trump next week, the president-elect said on Thursday.Fact check: Where Trump's picks for EPA, Interior and Energy stand on climate change

A GROUNDBREAKING discovery in the Philippines has unveiled the first hermaphroditic green mussel, locally known as tahong, found in mussel farms within the inner Malampaya Sound in Palawan. Released on November 26, the study titled “First Record of Hermaphroditism in Green Mussels (Perna viridis) in the Philippines” was authored by Adzel Adrian Baldevieso, Ma. Shirley Golez and Fiona Pedroso from Mindanao State University-Naawan and University of the Philippines Visayas. Conducted from October 2017 to March 2018, it involved the collection of 1,890 green mussels. Of the 540 samples subjected to histological analysis, one was identified as a hermaphrodite, representing 0.18 percent of the total sample. Initially appearing male due to the typical milky creamy white color of the male sex gland, further examination revealed both male gametes (spermatocytes and sperm) and female gametes (developing eggs) in separate areas, each at different stages of development. While the researchers did not draw definitive conclusions on the effect of temperature on the sex ratio and hermaphroditism, they noted that only one hermaphroditic sample was recorded, and the research lasted just six months. “Such conditions can lead to intersex traits, which might indicate underlying environmental problems,” the researchers said. Salinity and temperature were regularly monitored during the sampling period using a refractometer and a thermometer. The average salinity was 29.47 parts per thousand (ppt), and the temperature averaged 28.20°C, both within the ideal range for green mussels. An unexpected male-to-female ratio of 1:0.86 was also noted, deviating from the typical 1:1 ratio. Males predominated in October (1:0.73) and December 2018 (1:0.72), while females slightly outnumbered males in November (1:1.05) and March 2018 (1:1.03). The lack of categorization in November was likely due to spawning activity. ‘Incidental’ discovery The researchers clarified that the discovery was “incidental.” ”We were just fortunate to obtain a rare sample, which emerged as an incidental discovery beyond the primary objectives of my Master’s thesis research,” Baldevioso explained to the BusinessMirror in a Messenger interview. The thesis, titled “Pilot Testing of Longline Method for Green Mussel Culture in Traditional Areas,” initially focused on the connection between the reproductive cycle and meat quality of green mussels, he said. The Accelerated S&T Human Resource Development Program of the Department of Science and Technology’s Science Education Institute and the DOST-Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development supported the study that was part of a larger project on longline mussel culture. Rarity of hermaphroditism The rarity of hermaphroditism in this study aligns with similar findings elsewhere, such as in Hong Kong (Mondee Announces Receipt of Non-Compliance Letter from Nasdaq; Prasad Gundumogula takes leave of absence as CEO; Mondee Appoints Jesus Portillo as CEOHolding to Presbyterian to single digits in all but the first quarter, East Tennessee State squelched Presbyterian 64-31 in a non-conference women’s basketball game played Wednesday night inside Brooks Gym. Predictive Safety Announces Partnership with DISA Global SolutionsSUNRISE, Fla. — Aleksander Barkov and Carter Verhaeghe had power-play goals, Sam Reinhart had a short-handed score and the Florida Panthers beat the Toronto Maple Leafs 5-1 on Wednesday night for only their second win in eight games. Mackie Samoskevich also scored for Florida, Sam Bennett got an empty-net goal and Sergei Bobrovsky stopped 24 shots for the Panthers. Verhaeghe also had two assists. Mitch Marner scored for the Maple Leads, who lost for the second time in the last nine games and saw their lead in the Atlantic Division over Florida cut to one point. Anthony Stolarz stopped 19 shots for Toronto. The Maple Leafs lost forward Bobby McMann in the second period with a lower body injury. Takeaways Maple Leafs: Stolarz, defenseman Oliver Ekman-Larsson and forward Steven Lorentz — all Panthers last season — got their Stanley Cup championship rings in a Wedneday morning ceremony. Panthers coach Paul Maurice, general manager Bill Zito and a number of Panthers players also were present to celebrate with their former teammates. “Worth the wait,” Lorentz said. Panthers: Florida was without Anton Lundell, who left Monday's game after a puck was deflected into his face. He took part in the morning skate Wednesday but wasn't in the game lineup. Key moment Samoskevich's goal put Florida up 2-0 — it came 50 seconds after Barkov opened the scoring — and was a very good sign for the Panthers. They're now 4-0-0 when the former Michigan star gets a goal. Credit: AP/Lynne Sladky Key stat Reinhart has four short-handed goals this season. The only team — besides Florida — with four short-handed goals this season is Columbus, and 20 NHL clubs entered Wednesday with no more than one such goal this season. Up next The Maple Leafs visit Tampa Bay on Saturday, while the Panthers visit Carolina on Friday to start a home-and-home, with the return Saturday in Sunrise.
