Securities and Exchange Commission Chair Gary Gensler, who was aggressive in his oversight of cryptocurrencies and other financial markets, will step down from his post on Jan. 20. Gensler pushed changes that he said protected investors, but the industry and many Republicans bristled at what they saw as overreach. President-elect Donald Trump had promised during his campaign that he would remove Gensler. But Gensler on Thursday announced that he would be stepping down from his post on the day that Trump is inaugurated. Bitcoin has jumped 40% since Trump’s victory. It hit new highs Thursday and was nearing $100,000. Bitcoin moved notably higher still after Gensler's resignation was announced. Gensler's stance on the rise of cryptocurrencies was captured during a speech he gave during the first year of his chairmanship in 2021 where he described the market as “the Wild West.” “This asset class is rife with fraud, scams, and abuse in certain applications,” he said in a speech at the Aspen Security Forum. “There’s a great deal of hype and spin about how crypto assets work. In many cases, investors aren’t able to get rigorous, balanced, and complete information.” Under Gensler, the SEC brought actions against players in the crypto industry for fraud , wash trading and other violations, including as recently as last month when the commission brought fraud charges against three companies purporting to be market makers, along with nine individuals for trying to manipulate various crypto markets. Yet access to cryptocurrencies became more widespread under Gensler. In January, the SEC approved exchange-traded funds that track the spot price of bitcoin. With such ETFs, investors could get easier access to bitcoin without the huge overlays required to buy it directly. Gensler, however, acknowledged the SEC had denied earlier, similar applications for such ETFs, including Grayscale Bitcoin Trust, among the first to eventually be approved by the SEC. “Circumstances, however, have changed,” Gensler said, pointing to a ruling by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia that said the SEC failed to adequately explain its reasoning in rejecting Grayscale’s proposal. Even there, Gensler made sure not to endorse the merits of bitcoin. He pointed to how ETFs that hold precious metals are tracking prices of things that have “consumer and industrial users, while in contrast bitcoin is primarily a speculative, volatile asset that’s also used for illicit activity including ransomware, money laundering, sanction evasion, and terrorist financing.” Gensler was tested early in his tenure with the rise of the meme stock phenomenon that shocked the financial system in early 2021. Earlier this year, the SEC under Gensler pushed Wall Street to speed up how long it takes for trades of stocks to settle, one of the areas where the commission’s staff recommended changes following the reckoning created by GameStop , one of the first meme stocks. In the depths of the COVID-19 pandemic, hordes of smaller-pocketed and novice investors suddenly piled into the stock of the struggling video-game retailer. During the height of the frenzy, several brokerages barred customers from buying GameStop after the clearinghouse that settles their trades demanded more cash to cover the increased risk created by its highly volatile price. In May 2024, new rules meant broker-dealers have to fully settle their trades within one business day of the trade date, down from the previous two. Critics of the SEC under Gensler have called many of the agency's proposals overly burdensome. The investment industry, for example, is pushing against a proposal to force some advisers and companies disclose more about their environmental, social and governance practices, otherwise known as ESG. Critics say the proposal is overly complex and increases the risk of investor confusion, while imposing unnecessary burdens and costs on funds. On Thursday, Gensler stood by the SEC's track record under his direction. “The staff and the Commission are deeply mission-driven, focused on protecting investors, facilitating capital formation, and ensuring that the markets work for investors and issuers alike," Gensler said in prepared remarks. “The staff comprises true public servants." Gensler previously served as Chair of the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission, leading the Obama Administration’s reform of the $400 trillion swaps market. He also was senior advisor to U.S. Senator Paul Sarbanes in writing the Sarbanes-Oxley Act (2002) and was undersecretary of the Treasury for Domestic Finance and assistant secretary of the Treasury from 1997-2001.
At this stage, it would probably be more of a surprise if Marcus Rashford was ushered back into Manchester United ’s squad than if his current exclusion continued for another game, and possibly longer. His team are struggling for points, four places above the Premier League ’s relegation zone. Should they lose to Newcastle United at Old Trafford on Monday, that will be six defeats in December and the first time they have lost four in a row since 1961. Advertisement Who, though, can confidently predict that Ruben Amorim will bring Rashford back into a side that has scored fewer goals this season than 18th-placed Leicester City ? It feels unlikely given that Amorim’s recent selections have made it abundantly clear he does not like what he sees, or hears, when it comes to one of the club’s highest-paid players. Rashford has been omitted from the past four squads and, when a player is frozen out that way, the lesson of history is that the story rarely gets a happy ending. Roberto Mancini did make up with Carlos Tevez (or, at least, was willing to tolerate him) after their relationship at Manchester City appeared to have disintegrated. Pep Guardiola did the same with Yaya Toure and, in both cases, it ended with the players coming in from the cold to help City win a league championship. Tevez could even make light of the fact he had spent four months in exile because of the dispute that started with Mancini accusing him of refusing to come on, as a substitute, during a Champions League tie against Bayern Munich . The Argentinian disappeared to Buenos Aires for much of that time and was photographed on a golf course, leading to questions about whether he cared more about his golf handicap than playing for his club. So when he scored a hat-trick in one of his comeback matches, a 6-1 win at Norwich City, he made a point of celebrating with a golf-swing. Perhaps it is an unfair comparison in some respects given that Tevez’s dispute with City involved lawyers, some ugly public outbursts and open hostility rather than the same kind of issues that have led to Rashford’s removal from Amorim’s team — his attitude and lifestyle, in short, and the growing suspicion that a player with 60 England caps has badly blurred his priorities. The point here, however, is that it can be difficult to recall many occasions when something similar has happened with one of the Premier League’s A-listers and that player’s relationship with his manager has survived. Advertisement In theory it should not be too hard, you might assume, for a manager and player to talk it out and agree that, whatever their differences, they can still be good for one another. In practice, however, it seldom happens that way. So how does Rashford feel about United’s manager leaving him out of the squad for their games against Manchester City, Tottenham Hotspur , Bournemouth and Wolves ? Is he angry? Does he feel unfairly singled out? Or does he accept, deep down, that he has been pushing his luck for some time and, if he is really honest, that he has brought these problems upon himself? All that can really be said for certain is that Rashford seems keen to leave Old Trafford for another club and we know that because he, and his PR entourage, have made sure to get it out . Nor is it the first time he has given serious consideration to leaving in the past few years. United, in turn, would be open to selling him bearing in mind the growing evidence that Rashford, at 27, is no longer the player that everyone at Old Trafford expected, and wanted, him to be. But a transfer is never going to be straightforward because of the numbers involved and, unfortunately for Rashford, potential buyers could be excused for having a few misgivings when the player in question is earning in excess of £325,000 a week ($413,000) and has been out of form for longer than he would probably wish to remember. So the other option is that manager and player reach some sort of understanding and agree to put the past few weeks behind them. And that is clearly not straightforward either if you consider that, even when Jose Mourinho’s relationship with Paul Pogba was at its most strained, he never left him out of the entire squad for one match, never mind four in a row. Harry Maguire has shown it is possible to return to United’s starting XI after being frozen out, removed as captain and made available for transfer during Erik ten Hag’s time as manager. Advertisement That, however, was a different set of circumstances given that Maguire’s absence was based on football reasons rather than, as it is with Rashford, it being about what is happening off the pitch as well as on it. United fans may point out that Sir Alex Ferguson’s relationship with Wayne Rooney survived the player handing in a transfer request in 2010 and contemplating what would have been a treacherous cross-city switch to Manchester City. The better comparison, perhaps, is what happened in the last few weeks of Ferguson’s reign, late in the 2012-13 season, when Rooney was removed from the team because the manager did not like the way he was living his life. The two men could barely make eye contact as they lined up to shake hands after Ferguson’s farewell match at Old Trafford and the presentation of the Premier League trophy. The story at the time was that Ferguson had told his replacement, David Moyes, he had teed up Rooney’s departure as a leaving present. Chelsea wanted to sign the England striker. But Moyes had other ideas — as did Ed Woodward in his first summer as United’s chief executive — and sorted it out in a frank discussion with Rooney. “Do you still think you’re a top player?” Moyes asked. Rooney replied that, yes, of course he did. “So, if you are a top player, why are Chelsea offering only £25million for you?” Moyes wanted to know. Rooney knuckled down and was United’s best player for the first half of the following season. Perhaps Rashford could benefit from that kind of tete-a-tete and, if it has the same kind of impact, maybe it would help Amorim, too. Let’s not forget we are talking about a player who, with 138 goals, is 15th in United’s all-time list of scorers, ahead of Andy Cole, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Eric Cantona and various others who are considered to be United royalty. Go back through the years, however, and there is a clear pattern that the exile of a high-profile player is usually a manager signalling those at the top that it is time to cut them free. Advertisement Perhaps you recall Mikel Arteta doing something similar with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang to set in motion his departure from Arsenal at a time when many fans considered him their best striker. Guardiola did the same with Joao Cancelo because of issues behind the scenes at City. Mancini gave up, in the end, on Mario Balotelli and, as happened with Rooney, sometimes it needs the manager to leave for a player to stay. Every Newcastle fan of a certain generation remembers Ruud Gullit’s infamous spell as manager and the mutiny that was caused by him dropping Alan Shearer, the local hero, for a derby defeat against Sunderland , early in the 1999-2000 season. The more relevant example, however, is Rob Lee, who was considered to be a Shearer ally, ostracised from Gullit’s team and made to train with the reserves. Lee, an England international, was not even given a squad number. But it was Gullit who lost the civil war and ended up resigning. Lee was brought back into the team by Bobby Robson and would later receive a testimonial season to mark his service to the club. And Rashford? The saddest thing, perhaps, is that there was a time when it was easy to imagine he, a former academy player who has been at the club since the age of seven, would be awarded a testimonial of his own one day. Maybe that can still be the case. It just doesn’t feel likely at the moment and, if he is left out again, we can probably conclude that Amorim is not willing to make exceptions just because of a player’s long association with the club. (Top photo: Martin Rickett/PA Images via Getty Images)In a post on his X account, NBA agent Bernie Lee gave his candid opinion of the NBA All-Star game and why player participation is at an all-time low. According to Lee, the players are put off by being overlooked in favor of celebrities and other special guests. "Their rights as workers for themselves and for future generations," wrote Lee . "The All-Star game is about everything but the players and the players who participate in it realize this pretty quickly when they look over and realize Guy Fieri was given better seats than their parents." The NBA All-Star weekend is intended to be a celebration of the NBA season for the fans, players, and media. Typically, it features various events ranging from a celebrity game on Friday night to a dunk contest on Saturday before the main show on Sunday evening involving the All-Stars. In years past, all the best players would save their energy to put on a grand show in the All-Star game and it was always a highly anticipated affair. Between leaders like Michael Jordan , Kobe Bryant , and LeBron James , the players always made things exciting while minimizing their risk of injury. In this new generation, the All-Star game has become a joke with minimal defense, minimal effort, and a product that fails to deliver on the promise of exciting hoops to the fans. The whole All-Star weekend is in decline but it wasn't always the case. The negative shift in vibes for the All-Star game has happened recently but it's progressed quickly over the past few years. The problem is that the players just aren't as committed as they used to be, and Bernie Lee says it's because the NBA has made the event more about the celebrities than the actual players. Interestingly, Stephen Curry had a similar response when asked why players don't go all-out for the game anymore. He said that since the league makes it impossible for them to get into a competitive mindset, it's just easier to go half-speed and avoid any costly accidents. Plus, with all the events and obligations planned for the whole weekend, it can be hard for any player to get into the proper headspace before Sunday's big game. If the NBA wants to improve the All-Star game, it might be better to cut down on some of the action, give the players themselves more priority, and equip them with the tools they need to put on a show for the fans. At the very least, the league needs to do more so that the players have a proper incentive to play with maximum effort on the court. Whether that's giving them better seats for their families, raising the reward prize, or simply clearing the schedule to give them more prep time, the league has a number of options to consider, and nothing is off the table if it means driving up the quality of the NBA's sacred weekend. This year, the NBA's All-Star game is in its usual February slot but it's set to experience major changes this season as the league experiments with a brand-new format. Maybe they'll also consider addressing what happens behind the scenes in order to maximize the experience for everyone. The model and beauty-pageant winner Aishah Akorede, who grew up in Leixlip, Co Kildare, and has a master’s degree in international corporate governance, represented Ireland at Miss Universe 2023. Earlier this year she appeared on the Discovery+ reality show Beauty and the Geek. Her partner, Robert Rowiński, is a two-time finalist, with Cliona Hagan in 2019 and Brooke Scullion in 2023. Danny O’Carroll, who is best known for playing Buster Brady on Mrs Brown’s Boys, is the latest veteran of the Brendan O’Carroll comedy to grace Dancing with the Stars, on the heels of his aunt Eilish O’Carroll and Rory Cowan. He dances with the two-time finalist Salome Chachua. It’s obviously far too early to take an informed view – but that hasn’t stopped bookmakers from installing Kayleigh Trappe as favourite, followed by Gearóid Farrelly and Rhys McClenaghan. F-16 Sortie Tests Writer’s Mettle On Supersonic Training Mission'Anxious millennial' who fled America for 'utopia' warns why others shouldn't follow her lead By RACHEL BOWMAN FOR DAILYMAIL.COM Published: 15:02 EST, 23 November 2024 | Updated: 15:06 EST, 23 November 2024 e-mail 14 View comments With a growing number of Americans considering leaving the country after Donald Trump 's election as president, one young woman has warned fleeing for politics isn't always what it's cracked up to be. Google searches on on 'how to move to countries' massively increased after Trump's win, with relocation firms saying 80 per cent of people want to move specifically for political reasons. Celebrities such as Barbra Streisand , Cher and Sharon Stone and Barbie star America Ferrera all said they'd leave if Trump won. An insider told DailyMail.com that Ferrera is 'sick' that Trump was re-elected and will be moving to the UK in search of the 'best opportunities' for her children. On Thursday, it was confirmed Ellen DeGeneres and wife Portia de Rossi had moved to the Cotswolds, in southeast England. Yet after Trump's landslide election win, Katy Nightingale, a 30-something who describes herself as an 'anxious millennial' and 'eco-socialist', warned Americans to reconsider making such a big commitment. 'Want to leave the US cause it's a dumpster fire? I thought I'd share my experience and some thoughts,' the artist, activist and health care professional said Nightingale, writing a piece on her Substack titled 'I tried to quit the US', said she left specifically because of the politics in the US in April 2023, spending a year in New Zealand. She has also spent time in the Middle East after growing up in Chicago and Michigan. Self-described 'anxious millennial' Katy Nightingale (pictured) told people to reconsider leaving the the country A growing number of Americans are considering leaving the country after Trump's re-election On arriving in New Zealand, her first hurdle came with the challenging bureaucracy around immigration and working, and having to constantly update her visa to keep working. She also found it a lonely experience trying to make friends in a new country with a different culture 'in your early 30s.' 'New Zealand is considered one of the more accessible countries for Americans with no heritage-based citizenship options, but that doesn't make the process easy,' Nightingale said. Nightingale also addressed fears of those leaving because they were concerned about what a Trump presidency meant for issues of race, gender, children's education and reproductive rights. Nightingale said there is no such thing as a utopia and people fleeing would be leaving others behind to deal with those things, ' Leaving is not a protest. Sometimes quitting is necessary for self-preservation, but let's not get it confused with creating any kind of positive difference on the place you're leaving,' she said. Nightingale said rather than 'abandoning' their communities, they should try help them. 'For those of us that want to dismantle unjust systems, we need to think critically about whether we leave or stay. 'Departing creates a void that will eagerly be filled by those who aim to advance fascism and oppression. With fewer people engaging locally, certain voices will grow louder. 'Even if you plan to stay engaged and vote from abroad, you will never be as involved as you can be while living there. In my years of being abroad, I've followed US news closely, voted, signed petitions, and shared on social media, but I've found that the lack of proximity keeps me from doing much more than that.' Nightingale moved to New Zealand (pictured Matheson Lake on the South Island) in pursuit of a better life but revealed in a recent blog post that she now feels utopias do not exist Nightingale (pictured) called out people who are fleeing over politics for abandoning the communities that need their help A host of celebrities who have been vocal in their opposition to Trump taking office -including Barbie star America Ferrera - even promised they would leave the country in the won She advised it would make more of an impact for people who have the means to leave the country to stay and use their resources to help others. 'While I struggled with my decision to stay or to leave, a friend of mine patiently reminded me how much privilege I benefit from in the US,' said Nightingale. 'Being an educated, able-bodied, cis, white person with a large social network means that I will almost always have access to a myriad of resources. How much would the policies I fear actually impact me, compared to those who can't leave?' Ordinary Americans told DailyMail.com their opinions on the matter, noting how there are most likely other countries that offer a more peaceful living environment, while also simultaneously questioning what would change for those with more influence. 'If they have power, privilege and money, maybe they should do something to help the community around them instead of just fleeing,' said one person. 'I understand when people want to leave, because it's crazy out here. But I don't like that privileged people with mobility are just willy nilly saying 'we're going to leave because the ship is sinking,'' another said. Democratic candidate and Vice President Kamala Harris had a who's who of Hollywood endorsing her, with stars such as Jennifer Lopez, Beyoncé, Oprah Winfrey, Bruce Springsteen and Howard Stern backing her campaign. Bid for fund to preserve affordable housing in Ottawa fails at committee
Best Bets for NCAA Basketball Picks Against the Spread for Saturday, November 23According to an undergraduate, having pocket money from the Sarawak government eases the financial burden off from students who live far from their families. — Bernama photo KUCHING (Dec 11): The RM1,200 pocket money initiative for Sarawakian university students, announced last month, has been met with enthusiasm by many. However, some of them are questioning its long-term effectiveness and economic impact. Russell Floyd Albert For Russell Floyd Albert, he agrees that the programme offers immediate relief. “This is helpful for us in terms of our budgeting and pocket money. We, the students, can use the money to buy books, stationery items, clothes and other essential things for us to use every day,” the fourth-year student of a public institution of higher learning (IPTA) told The Borneo Post. Adding on, Russell said this incentive would alleviate some burden off the students and help to keep them focused on their studies, instead of having to do part-time jobs to cover their living expenses and also university fees. “Some of my friends said: ‘Abang Jo terbaik!’ (Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg is the best!) as this initiative by him would reduce the burden of living costs and school fees off the students,” he added. Dzul Iqnizarith Zahren Mohamad Yakup Dzul Iqnizarith Zahren Mohamad Yakup, a third-year IPTA student, was also all praise for the aid programme. “Having pocket money from the Sarawak government eases the financial burden off from the students who live far from their families. “We, students, won’t have to stress about how to cover our daily expenses. It supports our social activities too, allowing us to attend gatherings, dine out with friends, or work on group projects without always depending on others. “Ultimately, this assistance helps us lead a more stable and productive life during our studies.” Private university student J. Lee agreed, calling the initiative a good way of promoting tertiary education. “It would help cover postgraduate study costs like printing materials and transportation.” However, not all students view the RM1,200 aid as a major lifeline. Anselm Mcbryan Devric For another IPTA student, Anselm Mcbryan Devric, he praised the initiative for helping those from the B40 (low-income) and M40 (medium-income) families, but also pointed out that RM1,200 would not be enough for the whole year. “At least, it alleviates our burden,” he said. Anselm, a member of his university’s Executive Welfare Committee, also said some of his friends were curious about the procedures involved in the channelling of the RM1,200. “They are eager to know clearer instructions on the distribution process.” Meanwhile, academician Prof Dr Jerome Kueh gave a more cautious perspective. The Associate Professor at the Faculty of Economics and Business at Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas) praised the ‘spirit of inclusivity’ in the initiative, but at the same time, questioned its sustainability. “This can continue if the state is able to maintain its revenue diversification. “Also, the funds used for students’ cash aid may divert the resources from long-term investments like educational infrastructure or skills programmes,” he said. Kueh also warned about ‘unintended consequences’ such as students becoming too reliant on government aid, or spending the funds on non-essential items. “Without financial literacy programmes, the students may misallocate the money, which would defeat the initiative’s purpose.” The lecturer also highlighted potential inflationary effects, saying increased student spending could drive up prices for food, accommodation and transportation near campuses. In this respect, he suggested that pairing the RM1,200 incentive with financial education could further maximise its benefits. “Teaching students to handle their budget wisely and to prioritise their expenses can foster financial independence and responsible-spending habits.”
