This occurred after two buses transported voters, allegedly from the Kavango East region, to vote at Oshakati on Saturday afternoon. Onlookers claimed that Hofni Iipinge, a central committee member of Swapo, was seen ushering the voters off the buses. Iipinge refused to comment on the matter. One of the buses is owned by the Swapo company Namib Contract Haulage, while the other is operated by Emangweni. Namibian voters are not restricted from voting in regions where they do not reside. “They moved in groups of five to fifteen, asking us why we allowed foreigners to vote. We have not even seen the people they are talking about,” said Loide Eelu, the presiding officer at the Okandjengedi polling station at Oshakati. She said she did not know which political parties the agents are from. “They are harassing us and making our work difficult,” Eelu added. Leta Amweelo, a colleague of Eelu at the Onawa Kindergarten polling station, said two agents from political parties visited her polling station looking for foreign nationals attempting to vote in Namibia. “I explained to them that foreign nationals are not allowed to vote in Namibia. They asked me whether the Electoral Commission of Namibia (ECN) did not train us to lie,” she said. Oshakati has four open polling stations where voters can participate in the extended elections. The polling stations opened on Friday and are due to close at 21h00 on Saturday.Referee David Coote will not appeal against termination of contract

Columbia River Treaty talks continue amid incoming Trump presidencyDo it Best Successfully Completes Purchase of True ValueJASPER, ALTA. — This year, Kim Stark's kids took responsibility for decorating the family Christmas tree. Ornaments include toy cars, puzzle pieces, string and a pair of binoculars — things her three young daughters had handy after the family lost their home in summer’s devastating Jasper wildfire. "I have the most wonderful tree on the planet," said Stark. "It's part of our story and part of who we are. “If (the kids) are happy, I'm happy." Stark is part of the fabric of the Jasper townsite, a 10-year member of the fire department and owner of a coffee shop and bakery. Her family, plus three furry pets and a fish, are living in a condo as they navigate rebuilding their home. “(The kids) miss our house, and we talk about our house,” said Stark. “We make sure we go to our neighbourhood, so that it doesn't become somebody else's neighbourhood.” Stark and other residents are anxious and nervous for the future following the fire that hit the town July 24. About 5,000 residents and 20,000 visitors were safely evacuated before the fire breached the western edge of town and destroyed 350 homes and businesses, including 820 housings units. The Insurance Bureau of Canada pegged the damage at $880 million. Six months after the fire, debris is still being cleared — lot by lot. Locals including Stark are quick to say things could have been worse. But anxiety over temporary living situations and what may be a long and slow rebuild process has many residents and municipal leaders feeling unsettled heading into 2025. For Sabrina Charlebois and David Leoni, the top concern is the Alberta government's $112-million modular housing project. It's to put up 250 pre-built rental units in the town and rent them to those displaced by the fire. Social Services Minister Jason Nixon said the first homes should be ready by late January or early February, with the rest in April. The majority are to be multi-bedroom suites to accommodate families. “If we can get all of our approvals on time, we definitely are on time to be able to build in the context of what we promised,” Nixon said. It’s complicated, he added, given there are layers of government with an Alberta town in a national park. Charlebois was born and raised in Jasper. The fire destroyed her childhood home, which her late father built, as well as the salon where she worked. "It's better than nothing," she said of the housing project, noting at least 2,000 residents were displaced so demand could outnumber the new units. Charlebois, who has been staying in a hotel, said it's understandable projects like this take time. But "we're six months into this, and there's no homes for anyone." "My fear is not finding a place to live, because I have to be out of my hotel by the spring," she said. Leoni, a dentist and former Olympic biathlete, and his family also lost their home, as did seven staff at his clinic. He said the April cutoff date Charlebois is facing also applies to his staff staying in hotels. "Hopefully that's concurrent with the provincial government's opening of these modular units that they're putting in, because we're going to lose staff," said Leoni. "Without them I can't do anything." The clinic needed to replace $160,000 worth of equipment and required a top-to-bottom scrub before appointments resumed in October. Leoni estimates his patient list is down one-third because of the fire. Whether those patients return remains to be seen. Charlebois and Leoni both said their anxiety is heightened when they consider the unpredictable nature of the town's tourism economy and how it could complicate the pace of rebuilding. It’s a catch-22: residents need houses in order to rebuild and restart the economy, but they can’t restart the economy without tourists. And tourists require services, which require workers, who require housing. Bill Given, the town's chief administrator, said he's optimistic the municipality can "thread the needle.” But he has his own anxieties when it comes to rebuilding, namely the complexity of Jasper operating under both federal and provincial oversight. "An associated risk of that is that individual agendas from different orders of government overtake the public interest in delivering on what Jasper needs," Given said. "I think there's also a risk, maybe somewhat smaller, that private interests overtake the broader public interest." Jasper Mayor Richard Ireland, who lost his home in the fire, said they have to find a way. "Failure is not an option for anybody," said Ireland. "We have one chance to get this right, and that's what we have to do." In the meantime, Stark and her daughters watch from behind a fence as what's left of their home is cleared away. "I'm super excited just to have a hole instead of a burnt spiral staircase that was coming up in my backyard. “Now,” she said, “it's just this beautiful dirt. "There's future there." East Carolina wins 71-64 over StetsonArkansas DE Landon Jackson carted off field and taken to hospital with neck injury

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- On Monday, the Fresno State Bulldogs fell to the Northern Illinois Huskies in the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl on the blue in Boise. In the fourth quarter and overtime alone, the game saw two missed go-ahead field goals (one from each team), three quick overtime touchdowns, endless overtime trickeration from NIU and, eventually, a crushing, game-winning fourth-down sack from Jordan Hansen to give the Huskies a 28-20 win. Both teams had chances to seize the game in regulation. Fresno State led 13-3 at halftime, but NIU scored 10 points early in the second half -- including six on a beautiful 26-yard touchdown catch from Grayson Barnes -- to tie the game heading into the fourth quarter. NIU drove the length of the field late but settled for a 35-yard field goal on fourth-and-1 (violating the swashbuckling spirit of the Potato Bowl) and missed with 3:02 left. Then Fresno State missed a 34-yarder at the buzzer, too. Quantum Corporation: Don't Back The Wrong Horse And Sell The HypeThere are many unexpected places Tony Armstrong’s career has taken him since his stratospheric rise from News Breakfast sports host to double Logie winner (most popular new talent and most popular presenter) and then Gold Logie nominee in just four short years, but none so unexpected as Eat the Invaders . The six-part documentary finds him in the avant-garde surroundings of Tasmania’s Mona Museum, trying to eat his way out of Australia’s invasive species problem. It’s not so much “lions and tigers and bears ... oh my!” and more “rabbits, cane toads, carp, camels and cats and ... oh, deer.” Tony Armstrong, Kirsha Kaechele and Vince Trim. Credit: ABC TV “I ate camel testicle,” he says over Zoom from his holiday spot on the NSW North Coast. “I don’t know if that made the cut because we all went ‘blurrrrrgh’. So, with all due respect to camels, no thank you, but I can say I’ll try anything once. So I keep that unblemished record of fearlessness intact.” That fearlessness even extended to eating feral cats in the remote Indigenous community of Kiwirrkurra in Western Australia, where the felines are traditionally hunted – and then eaten – to protect the local bilby population. “I ate and loved it,” says Armstrong. “It was honestly so nice. I know I sound like a freak saying that, but It was the way that we hunted the cat as well, out with the ladies in the Western Desert. They were looking after their totems and they were protecting their lands. “We talk about ethical eating, and I don’t think it gets more ethical than that. And then we cooked it in the dirt – wrapped in foil – and it tasted like the yummiest rotisserie chicken I’ve ever had. Tony Armstrong filming Eat The Invaders. Credit: ABC TV “We’re not telling people to kill your cat and eat it. It’s more [making cat owners think], ‘I need to maybe change my habits as a cat owner.’ Don’t let your cat out. If they get out, they are a killing machine, and that’s what we want people to get.” As well as hunting with the women of Kiwirrkurra, Armstrong joins others on the front line of feral pest eradication, observing how rabbits, camels and deer are caught, as well as cane toads (the only animal he wasn’t allowed to eat) and carp, aka “dumpster dolphins”. He also consults invasion biologists professors Andrew Lowe and Phill Cassey about the ethical implications of creating a market for eating the animals before returning to Mona to dine with artist Kirsha Kaechele, whose surrealist art book Eat the Problem inspired the show, and high-profile guests to sample dishes featuring the pest created by Mona head chef Vince Trim. It’s a wild idea – quite literally – especially when you consider invasive species have a devastating effect on Australia’s biodiversity, damaging native soils, plants and animals. Feral cats, for example, are believed to kill more than 1.5 billion native mammals, birds, reptiles and frogs each year. Wild rabbits, meanwhile, which started as a population of just 13 when they were first introduced by grazier Thomas Austin in 1859 in Victoria, are now thought to number more than 200 million. Sounds fishy? Tony Armstrong in Eat The Invaders. Credit: ABC TV However, the idea that we simply eat our way out of the problem hasn’t come without criticism. When Kaechele’s book, with its complementary exhibition, was published in 2019, it was labelled “little more than an exquisitely designed elitist spectacle” that failed to “to take into consideration the complex realities this proposition entails”, by University of Tasmania lecturer Dr Svenja Kratz in a piece written for The Conversation. In December, the Invasive Species Council also criticised the documentary without having seen it, saying it was “well-intentioned” but a “fantasy” and “could make matters worse”. “The show, by showcasing these animals as food, risks making their presence more desirable – creating a dangerous paradox that could lead to the further spread of some species. We have particular concerns about the show promoting carp, camels and deer,” wrote Carol Booth, a policy analyst for the council, in an opinion piece for The Sydney Morning Herald. Armstrong, however, says Eat the Invaders isn’t as straightforward about promoting the consumption of invasive pests – it’s more about creatively tackling a challenging problem. Tony Armstrong with other 2024 Good Logie nominees. Credit: Jessica Hromas “Hopefully, when they [the Invasive Species Council] do watch it, if they do watch it, they can see that we’re not being flippant,” says Armstrong. “This isn’t necessarily in response to them; it’s just general, but the show isn’t actually a cooking show. “It’s a show about ways of thinking. We use this sort of punk rock, almost shocking title and shocking premise as a way to then get people to think about the ways in which they might own their cats, the ways in which the food [we eat on the show] impacts biodiversity. Eating our way out of the problem is just our way of being at the front of the jungle, cutting through the shrubs so that behind it, there are different ways of thinking.” In a weird way, Eat the Invaders dovetails neatly into Armstrong’s other Australiana projects on the ABC, particularly Great Australian Stuff and Tony Armstrong’s Extra-Ordinary Things . He also has another documentary in the works, End Game , about racism in Australian sport, which will air in 2025. It’s been quite the rise, considering he has only been on the ABC since 2020, when he joined as a sports producer and presenter, before being elevated to the N ews Breakfast sports presenting role in 2021. It’s also something Armstrong is still getting his head around. He left News Breakfast in October to recalibrate after three years of brutally early starts. “It’s like, ‘What the f--- is going on,’” he says, laughing, of his rapid rise. “I’ve definitely got impostor syndrome, that’s for sure. But, I guess, timing is everything. People got a decade’s worth of News Breakfast in like 18 months [during COVID], so they saw way more of me than they would have. So I think that’s got a lot to do with it [his popularity and visibility]; everyone was stuck at home watching the ABC, and I was the part of the news that wasn’t COVID. I was kind of like, ‘Oh my god, yes, we could talk about sport. We don’t have to talk about [case] numbers.’ So I put a lot of what’s happened down to timing and taking the opportunity when it came.” Does he have any advice for News Breakfast ’s new full-time host, James Glenday, and new full-time sports presenter, Catherine Murphy? “They know this because I say it to anyone who asks,” says Armstrong. “Care heaps about it. Care heaps about your effort, and then as soon as you’ve done it, you can’t worry about what anyone else thinks. Because you don’t get to choose how people react to what you’re doing and if you make a mistake on it, honestly, it’s not the end of the world. Guess what? You’ll be on air tomorrow, and everyone will have forgotten. “I think that’s the thing. It’s the most daunting when you’re going in, you’re like, ‘Shit. This is a huge audience. What if I say a name wrong?’ And then you realise, if you’re trying your best, you’re allowed to make mistakes, right?” Eat the Invaders premieres on Tuesday, January 7, at 8.30pm on the ABC. Northern Illinois coach Rashon Burno knows what it takes to steer DePaul to the NCAAs because he was the starting point guard on the 2000 team that made the tournament -- the Blue Demons' only other NCAA appearance since 1992. Perhaps they can compare notes Saturday afternoon when Burno leads the Huskies (2-3) back to his alma mater as DePaul (5-0) hosts its sixth straight home game in Chicago. Last season, Burno's NIU squad helped accelerate DePaul's need for a new coach -- as the Huskies waltzed into Wintrust Arena and owned Tony Stubblefield's Blue Demons by an 89-79 score on Nov. 25. The Huskies built a 24-point second-half lead before coasting to the finish line. Can history repeat for NIU? There's just one problem with using last year's game as a potential barometer for Saturday's rematch: Almost no players on this year's teams were part of last year's squads. At DePaul, only assistant coach Paris Parham remains as Holtmann had the green light to bring in an all-new roster. UIC graduate transfer Isaiah Rivera (16.0 ppg, .485 3-point rate) and Coastal Carolina transfer Jacob Meyer (15.4 ppg, .406 on 3s) lead a balanced attack that focuses on getting half its shots from beyond the arc. At NIU, Burno retained only two players who competed against DePaul last year -- Ethan Butler and Oluwasegun Durosinmi -- and they combined for three points in 26 minutes in that game. The Huskies' main players used the transfer portal to join such programs as Kansas, Wisconsin, Penn State, Colorado State, James Madison, Georgia State and Niagara. With every starting job open, Butler has jumped into the lineup and produced 11.6 points, 4.8 rebounds, 1.8 blocks and 1.4 steals per game. Transfers Quentin Jones (Cal Poly) and James Dent (Western Illinois) pace the Huskies with 14.4 and 14.0 points per game. NIU is on a two-game losing streak, most recently a 75-48 home defeat at the hands of Elon on Wednesday. Holtmann hopes to have Arkansas transfer Layden Blocker for Saturday's game. Blocker missed Tuesday's 78-69 win over Eastern Illinois with a quad injury. With the combo guard unavailable, point guard Conor Enright handed out a career-high 11 assists in a season-high 38 minutes. "We need (Blocker)," Holtmann said. "I don't want to play Conor 38 minutes." --Field Level Media

(UPDATE) SEOUL — Russian Defense Minister Andrei Belousov met with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and agreed to boost military cooperation between the two isolated nations, Pyongyang's state media reported on Saturday. The United States and South Korea have accused the nuclear-armed North of sending more than 10,000 soldiers to help Russia fight Ukraine, with experts saying Kim is eager to gain advanced technology, and battle experience for his troops, in return. Finance Minister Dominic LeBlanc and Foreign Affair Minister Melanie Joly shared few details of their meetings in Palm Beach, simply saying in a statement the U.S. officials they met with took notes and agreed to relay messages to Trump. "Minister LeBlanc and Minister Joly had a positive, productive meeting at Mar-a-Lago with Howard Lutnick and Doug Burgum, as a followup to the dinner between the prime minister and President Trump last month," wrote Jean-Sébastien Comeau, a spokesman for LeBlanc. Lutnick is Trump's nominee for commerce secretary, and Burgum is the former governor of North Dakota and current nominee for secretary of the interior. When announcing Lutnick as his commerce pick Trump said the chief executive of the financial firm Cantor Fitzgerald would be in charge of the Trump "tariff and trade agenda." "Both Ministers outlined the measures in Canada’s Border Plan and reiterated the shared commitment to strengthen border security as well as combat the harm caused by fentanyl to save Canadian and American lives." He added the ministers agreed to continue the discussions in the coming weeks. Joly is also expected to meet in Florida with senator Lindsay Graham Friday evening. This trip comes less than four weeks before Trump is sworn in again as president. He has threatened to impose a new 25 per cent import tariff on Canada and Mexico the same day over concerns about a trade imbalance, as well as illegal drugs and migration issues at the borders. The broad strokes of Canada's new border plan were made public Dec. 17, including a new aerial intelligence task force to provide round-the-clock surveillance of the border, and improved efforts using technology and canine teams to seek out drugs in shipments leaving Canada. Comeau said earlier Friday morning the ministers would also emphasize the negative impacts of Trump's threatened tariffs on both Canada and the U.S. Comeau said the ministers were to build on the discussions that took place last month when Trudeau and LeBlanc met Trump at Mar-a-Lago just days after Trump first made his tariff threat. It was at that dinner on Nov. 29 when Trump first raised the notion of Canada becoming the 51st state, a comment LeBlanc has repeatedly since insisted was just a joke. But Trump has continued the quip repeatedly in various social media posts, including in his Christmas Day message when he said Canadians would pay lower taxes and have better military protection if they became Americans. He has taken to calling Trudeau "governor" instead of prime minister. It isn't clear if LeBlanc raised the issue with Trump's team in Palm Beach Friday. Trudeau had not directly responded to any of the jabs, but on Thursday posted a link to a six-minute long video on YouTube from 2010 in which American journalist Tom Brokaw "explains Canada to Americans." "Some information about Canada for Americans" was all he wrote in the post. The video, which originally aired during the 2010 Vancouver Olympics, explains similarities between the two countries, including their founding based on immigration, their trading relationship and the actions of the Canadian Army in World War 2 and other modern conflicts. "In the long history of sovereign neighbours there has never been a relationship as close, productive and peaceful as the U.S. and Canada," Brokaw says in the video. Former Bank of Canada governor Mark Carney, who is at the centre of some of Trudeau's recent domestic political troubles, also called out Trump's antics on X Thursday, calling it "casual disrespect" and "carrying the 'joke' too far." "Time to call it out, stand up for Canada, and build a true North American partnership," said Carney, who Trudeau was courting to join his cabinet before Chrystia Freeland resigned as finance minister last week. Freeland's sudden departure, three days after Trudeau informed her he would be firing her as finance minister in favour of Carney, left Trudeau's leadership even more bruised than it already was. Despite the expectation Carney would assume the role, he did not and has not made any statements about it. LeBlanc was sworn in as finance minister instead the same day Freeland quit. More than two dozen Liberal MPs have publicly called on Trudeau to resign as leader, and Trudeau is said to be taking the holidays to think about his next steps. He is currently vacationing in British Columbia. He did not make a public statement about the meeting as of publication. This report by The Canadian Press was first published Dec. 27, 2024. Dublin, Dec. 23, 2024 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- The "Telematics for Rental and Leasing Fleets - 3rd Edition" report has been added to ResearchAndMarkets.com's offering. Car rental services allow customers to rent cars for a specific period, usually ranging from a few hours to a few weeks. The total average fleet managed by car rental companies in 2023 was about 4.4 million cars in Europe and North America. Vehicle leasing refers to the leasing of a motor vehicle for a fixed period at an agreed cost. The leasing market can broadly be divided into financial and full-service leasing. Vehicle leasing has historically mainly been a financial service but now also allows customers to outsource the ownership and entire management of their vehicles in a full-service lease model. In a full-service lease, the client pays the leasing company a regular monthly lease payment to cover financing, depreciation of the vehicle and various services provided in relation to the use of the vehicle. The number of telematics systems deployed by rental and leasing companies will increase at a steady rate in the next years. Key influencers expected to boost the telematics market in this vertical include the connected car trend driven by the vehicle OEMs and related service providers, the need for fleet owners to increase fleet utilisation and decrease the carbon footprint, the emergence of new mobility services and the general electrification trend in the automotive industry. The total number of active OEM and aftermarket telematics systems in use in the European rental and leasing market reached around 3.28 million at the end of 2023. The total installed base in Europe is forecasted to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 15.6 percent to 6.79 million in 2028. In North America, the total number of OEM and aftermarket telematics systems in use is forecasted to increase from around 2.89 million at the end of 2023 to reach 5.53 million by 2028, representing a CAGR of 13.9 percent. The telematics penetration rate in the total population of rental vehicles in Europe and North America was about 37.2 percent and 42.8 percent respectively at year-end 2023. The corresponding numbers for the car leasing market were 32.2 percent in Europe and 44.3 percent in North America at the end of 2023. The car rental and leasing markets are gradually consolidating, and a handful of major North American and European companies dominate each market. Rental and leasing companies with notable activities within the implementation of telematics include Enterprise Mobility, Hertz Corporation, Avis Budget Group, Europcar Mobility Group, Sixt Group, Arval, Leasys, Element Fleet Management, Ayvens and Alphabet. Players in the rental and leasing industry can either develop telematics programs independently or rely on partners to varying degrees. Multiple leading rental and leasing companies use a combination of centralised and decentralised telematics strategies across their footprints. In addition to the traditional car rental operators, several companies exclusively offer fully digital and contactless car rental services enabled by telematics solutions. Examples of these are Liigu, Locauto Elefast, Toosla and Virtuo. The telematics solution market for rental and leasing fleets is dominated by players such as Geotab, Targa Telematics, OCTO Telematics, CalAmp (Lojack), Webfleet, Powerfleet, Munic, MySmartObject, Connected Cars and RentalMatics. Leading hardware telematics vendors such as Teltonika Telematics and Ruptela are also serving the market. Several telematics service providers such as Fourth Tier, RentalMatics, TSD Mobility Solutions, Zubie, WITTE:digital, HQ Rental Software, Kirrk and Autofleet specialise in solutions for the rental industry. Some players specialising in carsharing telematics have broadened their product portfolio to target car rental and leasing companies. Examples of leading carsharing telematics technology vendors include Invers, Vulog, OpenFleet, WeGo Carsharing, Convadis and Atom Mobility. Automotive OEMs are increasingly taking an active part in the ecosystem by offering OEM telematics services or utilising connected car services via its captive rental and leasing companies. Examples include General Motors, Stellantis, Volkswagen, Ford, Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi, Toyota, Tesla, BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Hyundai.
