Smokers have been urged to kick the habit in the new year after new analysis shows how much of their lives are lost by each cigarette smoked. Men lose 17 minutes of life with every cigarette they smoke while a woman’s life is cut short by 22 minutes with each cigarette, experts have estimated. This is more than previous estimates, which suggest that each cigarette shortens a smoker’s life by 11 minutes. The new estimates, which suggest that each cigarette leads to 20 minutes loss of live on average across both genders, are based on more up-to-date figures from long-term studies tracking the health of the population. Researchers from University College London said that the harm caused by smoking is “cumulative” and the sooner a person stops smoking, and the more cigarettes they avoid smoking, the longer they live. The new analysis, commissioned by the Department for Health and Social Care, suggests that if a 10-cigarettes-a-day smoker quits on January 1, then by January 8 they could “prevent loss of a full day of life”. By February 20, their lives could be extended by a whole week. And if their quitting is successful until August 5, they will likely live for a whole month longer than if they had continued to smoke. The authors added: “Studies suggest that smokers typically lose about the same number of healthy years as they do total years of life. Make 2025 the year you quit smoking for good. Public health minister Andrew Gwynne said: “Smoking is an expensive and deadly habit and these findings reveal the shocking reality of this addiction, highlighting how important it is to quit. “The new year offers a perfect chance for smokers to make a new resolution and take that step.” Commenting on the paper, Professor Sanjay Agrawal, special adviser on tobacco at the Royal College of Physicians, said: “Every cigarette smoked costs precious minutes of life, and the cumulative impact is devastating, not only for individuals but also for our healthcare system and economy. “This research is a powerful reminder of the urgent need to address cigarette smoking as the leading preventable cause of death and disease in the UK.”Jim Carrey is one of the stars of eagerly awaited sequel Sonic the Hedgehog 3, but the film presents a first in his long Hollywood careeer which might surprise fans. Returning for a double stint in the third chapter of the live-action version based on the iconic video game character, he will reprise his role as Dr. Robotnik and additionally portray the villain's grandfather. This venture represents Carrey's first time doing a second sequel within a franchise. Previously, he has historically dismissed sequels. Prior to Sonic 2's 2022 release, the comedic genius had consented to just two follow-ups during his illustrious tenure. They were Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls back in 1995 and Dumb and Dumber To twenty years after the original. Carrey divulged to GamesRadar, "For me, at this time of my life for some reason I've never really wanted to do sequels. I've never really wanted to do franchise stuff. It didn't occur to me. I just thought, 'I want to move on and do something new'. Maybe six months before the first Sonic movie, I thought to myself I'd like to have a character that I could sit with for a bit for a few films. Especially if it could evolve, if it could change from film to film." "Robotnik has been able to evolve in his look and his manner from film to film. Every time he gets defeated, he becomes more bitter and hostile. His megalomania gets ratched up and these inventions, the technological wonders that he keeps coming up with, keep topping themselves.", reports Wales Online . As Carrey seems to have had a change of heart regarding sequels, anticipation is building among fans for what might come next. The star has set out specific conditions for returning to two of his most beloved characters, The Grinch and Stanley Ipkiss from The Mask. Speaking to Comicbook.com, he said: "Oh gosh, you know, it has to be the right idea. If somebody had the right idea, I guess... It's not really about the money. I joke about the money... But I never know. You can't be definite about these things. I said I'd like to retire, but I think I was talking more about power-resting. Because as soon as a good idea comes your way, or a group of people that you really enjoyed working with and stuff, it just things tend to change." He also outlined his terms for a sequel to The Grinch, noting: "If we can figure out The Grinch... The thing about it is that, on the day, I had to do that with a ton of makeup, and I could hardly breath, and it was an extremely excruciating process. The children were in my mind all the time. 'It's for the kids, it's for the kids, it's for the kids.' And now, with motion capture and things like that, I could be free to do some other things. Anything's possible in this world." Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is in cinemas December 21.

The panic in New Jersey and across the nation is very real as there is still no explanation for the multiple drone sightings over the state. Reports of these drones have poured in nightly after the first sighting on Nov. 18, 2024, and the source of the drones is still a mystery. The drones have been seen over reservoirs, the U.S. military's Picatinny Arsenal facility, President-elect Trump's Bedminster golf course, and were even reported following a U.S. Coast Guard vessel. Almost 100 years ago on Oct. 30, 1938, many of these same parts of New Jersey were also the setting for the infamous radio broadcast of "War of the Worlds" by Orson Welles. This radio play, detailing Martians who landed in Mercer County, New Jersey, fooled many who tuned in late and believed the events were really happening. It would be unfair to compare the current drone situation directly with the "War of the Worlds" broadcast. There was no real event that corresponded to the broadcast, and no one saw anything in the sky. However, there are several interesting parallels, says A. Brad Schwartz. Schwartz is the author of " Broadcast Hysteria: Orson Welles's War of the Worlds and the Art of Fake News ," a historical analysis of the infamous 1938 radio broadcast. "War of the World s has become a huge part of local folklore in that part of the state, so anything touching on the subject of UFOs is going to remind people of the broadcast," said Schwartz. Many in New Jersey, he says, have family stories of someone who listened to the broadcast. Some even went on school field trips to visit the "landing site." But the parallels do not end there. Wedged between two World Wars, the nation was in the midst of the Great Depression and mass unemployment. "Much like today, October 1938 was a very anxious time in America and around the world, when fears of war, economic depression, and environmental catastrophe felt very real for many people," says Schwartz. In fact, he says, many listeners of the broadcast did not think the visitors in the broadcast were Martians , but instead, Nazis, or that the crash landing was tied to some other environmental catastrophe. "When there's that much anxiety in the atmosphere, it tends to attach itself to an event like 'War of the Worlds'," says Schwartz. "People speculate publicly about their origin without knowing all the facts." This has been seen with the current drone situation, where explanations have ranged from mischievous hobbyists, an Iranian mothership, the Chinese, the Russians, our own government, Amazon, Google, Elon Musk, or even, yes, aliens. "One of the lessons I think people can still take away from War of the Worlds," says Schwartz," is to think more carefully about our sources of information, especially with a story like this that seems alarming or feeds into the anxieties of the moment." For their part, the FBI and Department of Homeland Security issued a statement asserting that "it appears that many of the reported sightings are actually manned aircraft, operating lawfully," according to Reuters. White House spokesperson John Kirby told reporters during a press briefing on Dec. 12 that "there is no known malicious activity occurring" related to the reported drone activity. Nevertheless, some U.S. senators have made statements calling for the reported drones to be shot down . There is a lot of anxiety that exists today — especially with the current political situation and the advent of particularly powerful technologies — technologies that we don't know how to manage on a global stage. Similar anxieties existed in the late 1930s, when new forms of mass media were appearing. Some feared these technologies would threaten democracy. "Today, we all need to be even more careful to ensure that what sounds like news comes from a reliable source before we believe it or share it. That's the best and only way to stop fear from going viral and spiraling out of control," says Schwartz.

The Associated Press created this story using technology provided by Data Skrive and data from Sportradar .Facepalm: Generative AI services are gaining immense popularity among both internet users and cybercriminals. According to the FBI, "synthetic" content is increasingly being exploited to carry out various types of fraud. However, with the right precautions, individuals can still effectively protect themselves online. The FBI has issued an alert about the criminal misuse of generative AI technology. In a recently published public service announcement, the bureau warns Americans that fraudsters are exploiting AI-generated content to make their illegal schemes more convincing and effective. According to the FBI, generative AI allows criminals to reduce the time and effort needed to deceive their targets. These AI tools take user inputs to "synthesize" entirely new content based on prompts. They can even help correct human errors that might otherwise raise suspicion, particularly in AI-generated text. Creating content with AI isn't inherently illegal, but it becomes a crime when that content is used in fraud or extortion attempts. The FBI's alert outlines several examples of how generative AI can be misused and offers practical advice to help users protect themselves online. AI-generated text can appear highly convincing in social engineering or spear-phishing campaigns. Fraudsters are leveraging generative AI to produce large amounts of fake content, create fake social media profiles, send messages, and translate languages with greater accuracy and fewer grammatical errors. Entire fraudulent websites can now be built in record time, and chatbots are being used to trick victims into clicking malicious links. AI-generated images are, unsurprisingly, at the forefront of current trends, and cybercriminals are taking full advantage of them. Fraudsters are using AI-generated visuals to enhance fake social media profiles and counterfeit ID documents that support fraudulent activities. According to the FBI, AI algorithms can produce "realistic" images that are being exploited in social engineering campaigns, spear phishing attempts, scams, and even "romance schemes." AI-generated audio and video content poses similar risks. Criminals can now impersonate public figures or even people personally known to their targets, requesting financial assistance or access to sensitive information like bank accounts. The FBI advises users to establish a "secret word" or phrase with trusted family and friends as a quick way to verify identities. Additional tips to guard against generative AI-enabled crimes include carefully inspecting images and videos for irregularities or inconsistencies, as well as minimizing the online availability of personal images or voice recordings. When dealing with financial requests, the FBI stresses the importance of verifying their legitimacy through direct phone calls rather than relying on text or email. Sensitive information should never be shared with individuals met exclusively online. While it may seem obvious, the FBI also reiterates that sending money, gift cards, or cryptocurrency to strangers online is highly risky and often leads to fraud.
