Welcome back to this Saturday night edition of NHL Predictions here at Last Word on Hockey as the Vancouver Canucks are in town to take on the Ottawa Senators. Vancouver has been okay this season as they try to manage not having their starting goaltender at their disposal. Meanwhile, Ottawa is experiencing a recurrent theme for the organization as their struggles in November seem to pop up annually. They are trying to bump their current four-game losing streak. So, as we get into it, we will send out the reminder. Be sure to check out all our coverage as we look at key matchups and provide detailed analysis on all the games throughout the 2024-25 campaign. NHL Predictions Vancouver Canucks at Ottawa Senators, from Canadian Tire Centre Time: 7:00 p.m. Eastern Standard Time (EST) TV: Sportsnet One, TVA Sports, ESPN+ The Ottawa Senators Could Use a Saturday Night at Home It seems that head coach Travis Green is trying to slightly tinker. Will it work? That’s what we are here to breakdown. Travis Hamonic draws in for Jacob Bernard-Docker after last game failed to reveal any new results. Also, upfront, Noah Gregor continues to nurse an undisclosed injury and will miss tonight’s game. However, something of more significance was the line combinations coach Green was running in this mornings practice. Normally, when Ottawa wants to experiment with lines, one of Brady Tkachuk and Claude Giroux get the responsibility of providing a spark for an individual or their line. One player getting the luxury of Tkachuk’s presence on their line is Shane Pinto . Hopefully it allows Pinto to get going as he has been far below last year’s scoring pace. Also, the Sens appear to be loading up their second line with the likes of Tim Stutzle and Drake Batherson joining Giroux on a line. In any case, the Sens should have three lines that can score and have the pieces to have a responsible fourth line even. Maybe these new combos are the magic needed for the season. Linus Ullmark draws in tonight for a Sens team that really wants to win. Of course, in November there is no such thing as a must win game, but this sure as heck feels like one. The Ottawa Senators and the One They Call Bath Man Vancouver Looks to Stay Above the Curve For the Vancouver Canucks , they are looking to stay in the conversation as a playoff team. Even falling back to where they are currently, as only a playoff contender, feels like a bit of a disappointment. They have plenty of positives and negatives. Their Vezina-calibre goaltender, Thatcher Demko , only just resumed practicing with the club. Kevin Lankinen has finally found his stride and is due for the start tonight, as a great example of mixing the good with the bad. Also, a Canuck star, J.T. Miller has had to step away from the club. However, Dakota Joshua is recently back following an off-season health scare. The Canucks will look to work hard in this one, but like the Sens, struggle with consistency. For Sens fans, Erik Brannstrom returns tonight to the team he called home for his first six NHL seasons. He has been a pleasant surprise for the Canucks, in less than 15 minutes of ice time, he is already up to six points. Senator fans know his value, and he has the potential to be a great third-pair defenceman in this league. NHL Predictions: Canucks and Senators Based on our analysis, Ottawa needs a win at home. Luckily for them, Vancouver isn’t quite refined to be able to prevent that from factoring in. Prediction: Ottawa wins in regulation, 5-2. According to Fanduel, if we want to look at adding some friendly wagers on the outcomes, check these out. Even though it is best to stay away from a parlay of this size, the elements that comprise it are welcoming. Go David Perron , Shane Pinto, Jake Sanderson , and Claude Giroux with two or more shots tonight. Follow this with Sanderson getting a shot in the first period and Stutzle an anytime scorer, pays +3539. Who knows, right? United Airlines travelers with lost luggage have a new tool to track their bags. If the lost bag has an Apple AirTag in it, that information can now be passed directly to United, the airline announced Thursday. The new feature, called Share Item Location, allows travelers with an AirTag or other Find My network accessory to share the location with the airline’s customer service team to help locate their luggage in the event it’s misplaced. United says more than 99% of its customers pick up their luggage without a hitch. Robyn Beck/AFP/Getty Images/File via CNN Newsource The feature is now available with iOS 18.2, iPadOS 18.2 or macOS 15.2. “Apple’s new Share Item Location feature will help customers travel with even more confidence, knowing they have another way to access their bag’s precise location with AirTag or their Find My accessory of choice,” said David Kinzelman, United’s chief customer officer. Travelers on United whose bags do not arrive at their destination can file a delayed baggage report with United and share the link to the item’s location either through the United app or via text message. After the report has been submitted, customer service agents will be able to locate the item on an interactive map alongside a timestamp of a recent update. The shared location will be disabled after a customer has the bag, and customers can also stop sharing the location of the item at any time on their own. The location link will also automatically expire after seven days. Using AirTags or other tracking devices on luggage is increasingly popular among frequent travelers, with a significant boom following the 2022 Southwest Airlines holiday meltdown , which displaced thousands of travelers over Christmas and into 2023, alongside much of their belongings. United says lost bags are rare, with more than 99% of its customers arriving with their bags. It says the new technology will help those with lost bags to recover them more quickly because the airline will have more information about them. Apple previously announced the new service will also be integrated at other air carriers, including Delta Air Lines. Others include Aer Lingus, Air Canada, Air New Zealand, Austrian Airlines, British Airways, Brussels Airlines, Eurowings, Iberia, KLM Royal Dutch Airlines, Lufthansa, Qantas, Singapore Airlines, Swiss International Airlines, Turkish Airlines, Virgin Atlantic and Vueling.Keyshawn Johnson breaks down how the Daniel Jones saga is hurting the New York Giants' future, highlighting their failed evaluation and costly decisions. Stephen A. Smith launched into a rant about the New York Giants on "First Take" that went viral Friday. Smith claimed the Giants had reached out to ESPN complaining about Elle Duncan’s segment on Daniel Jones . In a post on X, Pat Hanlon, the Giants' senior vice president of communications, took exception to Duncan’s segment. However, the New York Post reported that nobody from the Giants actually reached out to ESPN about the segment. CLICK HERE FOR MORE SPORTS COVERAGE ON FOXNEWS.COM Stephen A. Smith in 2021. Outside of that, since 2011, that’s 13 years. The Giants have made the playoffs twice. They’ve won one playoff game," Smith said. "And you’ve got the nerve to sit up there and call the offices and complain to executives about somebody that went on national television to do their job. Why don’t you do your damn job as an organization? ESPN'S ELLE DUNCAN CLAPS BACK AT GIANTS FANS IRKED BY DANIEL JONES CRITICISM "This is a performance-based business," Smith said. "Nobody is talking about your personal life. Nobody has gotten into anything. Your performance was put on public display, and you were 20 games under .500. You have been abhorrent. You have been awful as the quarterback for the New York Giants, and, on top of it all, they let go of Saquon Barkley to make sure they took care of you. They gave you the bag instead of him, which is another blemish." During the rant, Duncan smirked and sipped from her mug as Smith came to her defense. "Given what has happened at that company over past few years, tone deaf," Hanlon wrote. Duncan’s segment criticizing Jones aired on Thursday during "SportsCenter." "We normally reserve ‘Taking the Elle’ for Fridays, but Giants quarterback Daniel Jones just did something so inexplicable that we made an exception. With sustainable practices and cutting-edge snowmaking technology, Canada's ski industry ensures the future of winter recreation while supporting communities nationwide. TORONTO, Dec. 12, 2024 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Winter sports enthusiasts across Canada eagerly anticipate the first snowfall, signaling the start of a season filled with fresh air and fun in a snowy wonderland. However, a changing climate is making those first flakes increasingly unpredictable, challenging an industry that supports communities and promotes healthy lifestyles nationwide. In response, the Canadian Ski Council has launched snowissnow.ca , a resource showcasing the industry's commitment to sustainability and innovation. The initiative provides a behind-the-scenes look at how Canada's ski areas are adapting to ensure snowy days remain a hallmark of winter for generations to come. Why is it Important for Canadians to Know that Snow is Snow? "Responsibility and resilience are at the heart of the ski industry's investment in snowmaking,” says Paul Pinchbeck, President and CEO of the Canadian Ski Council. Snowmaking is essential for ski operations across Canada, providing consistent snow coverage that enhances the experience for recreational skiers. "It ensures visitors can enjoy the slopes even during fluctuating temperatures and unpredictable weather while supporting the communities that rely on winter tourism,” Pinchbeck adds. Snowmaking also plays a vital role in kickstarting the winter season, offering early access to slopes before natural snowfall is dependable. This early-season reliability not only attracts visitors eager to embrace winter activities but also supports competitive athletes by providing critical training opportunities. As a foundation of operations, snowmaking bolsters the resilience of Canada's ski industry and its capacity to adapt to the challenges posed by climate change. Snowfall Trends and the Need for Adaptation Snowfall data from Environment Canada reveals that winter in Canada is changing. While snow cover has decreased in regions like the Pacific Coast and the Rockies, areas in southern Canada and central British Columbia have seen an increase in days with snow cover. Meanwhile, the Weather Network's 2024/2025 Winter Forecast predicts near- to above-normal precipitation across most of Canada, ensuring an active winter ahead. The Economic and Health Impacts of Snowmaking Ski areas are at the heart of many communities, supporting the economy through job creation and attracting millions of visitors annually. For example, Canada's ski areas welcome 17.9 million skier visits annually, including 2.4 million active skiers and riders, and generate $4.4 billion in spending. Beyond economics, skiing and snowboarding deliver significant health benefits. Outdoor activity improves cardiovascular health, balance, strength, and coordination while supporting mental well-being. Studies show that skiers may be at a lower risk of anxiety disorders like Seasonal Affective Disorder (S.A.D.) and benefit from natural boosts to sleep, metabolism, and immune function. Snowmaking: A Modern, Sustainable Solution The stakes are high, and the industry is taking a proactive approach to adapting to the many challenges it faces. Snowmaking technology has evolved dramatically, becoming more efficient and environmentally friendly. The snowissnow.ca resource seeks to provide insights into the snowmaking process while debunking myths about made snow. Key facts about snowmaking: About the Canadian Ski Council The Canadian Ski Council is a national not-for-profit organization dedicated to promoting skiing and snowboarding across Canada. Through a variety of programs and initiatives, the Council works to make winter sports accessible to all Canadians, fostering a love for the outdoors and encouraging active, healthy lifestyles. KILLINGTON, Vt. (AP) — American skier Mikaela Shiffrin said she suffered an abrasion on her left hip and that something “stabbed” her when she crashed during her second run of a World Cup giant slalom race Saturday, doing a flip and sliding into the protective fencing. Shiffrin stayed down on the edge of the course for quite some time as the ski patrol attended to her. She was taken off the hill on a sled and waved to the cheering crowd before going to a clinic for evaluation. “Not really too much cause for concern at this point, I just can’t move,” she said later in a video posted on social media . “I have a pretty good abrasion and something stabbed me. ... I’m so sorry to scare everybody. It looks like all scans so far are clear.” She plans to skip the slalom race Sunday, writing on Instagram she will be “cheering from the sideline.” The 29-year-old was leading after the first run of the GS and charging for her 100th World Cup win. She was within sight of the finish line, five gates onto Killington’s steep finish pitch, when she an outside edge. She hit a gate and did a somersault before sliding into another gate. The fencing slowed her momentum as she came to an abrupt stop. Reigning Olympic GS champion Sara Hector of Sweden won in a combined time of 1 minute, 53.08 seconds. Zrinka Ljutic of Croatia was second and Swiss racer Camille Rast took third. The Americans saw Paula Moltzan and Nina O’Brien finish fifth and sixth. “It’s just so sad, of course, to see Mikaela crash like that and skiing so well,” Hector said on the broadcast after her win. “It breaks my heart and everybody else here.” The crash was a surprise for everyone. Shiffrin rarely DNFs — ski racing parlance for “did not finish.” In 274 World Cup starts, she DNF'd only 18 times. The last time she DNF'd in GS was January 2018. Shiffrin also has not suffered any devastating injuries. In her 14-year career, she has rehabbed only two on-hill injuries: a torn medial collateral ligament and bone bruising in her right knee in December 2015 and a sprained MCL and tibiofibular ligament in her left knee after a downhill crash in January 2024. Neither knee injury required surgery, and both times, Shiffrin was back to racing within two months. Saturday was shaping up to be a banner day for Shiffrin, who skied flawlessly in the first run and held a 0.32-second lead as she chased after her 100th World Cup win. Shiffrin, who grew up in both New Hampshire and Colorado and sharpened her skills at nearby Burke Mountain Academy, has long been a fan favorite. Shiffrin is driven not so much by wins but by arcing the perfect run. She has shattered so many records along the way. She passed Lindsey Vonn’s women’s mark of 82 World Cup victories on Jan. 24, 2023, during a giant slalom in Kronplatz, Italy. That March, Shiffrin broke Swedish great Ingemar Stenmark’s Alpine mark for most World Cup wins when she captured her 87th career race. To date, she has earned five overall World Cup titles, two Olympic gold medals — along with a silver — and seven world championships. In other FIS Alpine World Cup news, the Tremblant World Cup — two women’s giant slaloms at Quebec’s Mont-Tremblant scheduled for next weekend — were canceled. Killington got 21 inches of snow on Thanksgiving Day, but Tremblant — five hours north of Killington — had to cancel its races because of a lack of snow. ___ AP Sports Writer Pat Graham in Denver contributed to this report. ___ More AP skiing: https://apnews.com/hub/alpine-skiing Peggy Shinn, The Associated Press

KUWAIT: KNET, the Kuwaiti electronic banking services company, reported a 17 percent increase in electronic transactions for the 2024 financial year, driven by the growing adoption of various digital payment methods. The increase in transactions was seen across platforms, including point-of-sale systems (POS), online payment gateways, government e-payment services (Tasdeed), and ATMs. This growth contrasts with a 14 percent decline in cash withdrawals, reflecting the ongoing shift from traditional cash payments to digital transactions. Speaking at the company’s general assembly meeting, KNET’s Chairman, Mohammed Al-Othman, highlighted the company’s continued success in driving growth and embracing the latest digital transformation technologies. He noted that the total transaction volume for the year rose by 6 percent, with POS devices increasing by 5 percent and a 20 percent rise in the number of POS transactions. In terms of online payment systems, Al-Othman reported a 13 percent increase in transaction volume through online payment gateways, with a 7 percent rise in transaction values. This increase in online transactions signals a broader trend towards digital solutions, as more consumers and businesses shift towards cashless payments. However, the trend towards digital transactions has impacted cash withdrawals. There was a 14 percent drop in ATM cash withdrawals, and the value of withdrawals also decreased by 15 percent. This decline is attributed to a growing preference for electronic payments and digital transfers, which are becoming more convenient for consumers. Al-Othman also discussed KNET’s efforts to modernize its infrastructure, noting the renewal of its government e-payment contract with the Ministry of Finance in August. This agreement has led to a 4 percent increase in the number of completed transactions on the government payment platform. KNET’s Chief Executive Officer, Esam Alkheshnam, further emphasized the company’s ongoing commitment to expanding its market presence in Kuwait. Alkheshnam pointed out that the company’s innovations, such as the introduction of the instant payment service “WAMD,” and the ongoing development of the electronic payment gateway, were essential steps in supporting Kuwait’s national vision for digital transformation. He also mentioned that KNET had replaced 90 percent of its outdated POS devices, which were operating on older 2G and 3G networks, with new devices that support more advanced communication technologies. KNET, founded in 1992 with the support of local banks, has played a crucial role in linking the electronic payment systems of Kuwait’s banks. The company’s efforts align with Kuwait’s broader goals of reducing reliance on cash in daily transactions and enhancing the country’s financial inclusion. — KUNA
NEW YORK (AP) — U.S. stocks rose to records Tuesday after Donald Trump’s latest talk about tariffs created only some ripples on Wall Street, even if they could roil the global economy were they to take effect. The S&P 500 climbed 0.6% to top the all-time high it set a couple weeks ago. The Dow Jones Industrial Average added 123 points, or 0.3%, to its own record set the day before, while the Nasdaq composite gained 0.6% as Microsoft and Big Tech led the way. Stock markets abroad mostly fell after President-elect Trump said he plans to impose sweeping new tariffs on Mexico, Canada and China once he takes office. But the movements were mostly modest. Stock indexes were down 0.1% in Shanghai and nearly flat in Hong Kong, while Canada’s main index edged down by less than 0.1%. Trump has often praised the use of tariffs , but investors are weighing whether his latest threat will actually become policy or is just an opening point for negotiations. For now, the market seems to be taking it more as the latter. The consequences otherwise for markets and the global economy could be painful. Unless the United States can prepare alternatives for the autos, energy products and other goods that come from Mexico, Canada and China, such tariffs would raise the price of imported items all at once and make households poorer, according to Carl Weinberg and Rubeela Farooqi, economists at High Frequency Economics. They would also hurt profit margins for U.S. companies, while raising the threat of retaliatory tariffs by other countries. And unlike tariffs in Trump’s first term, his latest proposal would affect products across the board. General Motors sank 9%, and Ford Motor fell 2.6% because both import automobiles from Mexico. Constellation Brands, which sells Modelo and other Mexican beer brands in the United States, dropped 3.3%. The value of the Mexican peso fell 1.8% against the U.S. dollar. Beyond the pain such tariffs would cause U.S. households and businesses, they could also push the Federal Reserve to slow or even halt its cuts to interest rates. The Fed had just begun easing its main interest rate from a two-decade high a couple months ago to offer support for the job market . While lower interest rates can boost the economy, they can also offer more fuel for inflation. “Many” officials at the Fed’s last meeting earlier this month said they should lower rates gradually, according to minutes of the meeting released Tuesday afternoon. The talk about tariffs overshadowed another mixed set of profit reports from U.S. retailers that answered few questions about how much more shoppers can keep spending. They’ll need to stay resilient after helping the economy avoid a recession, despite the high interest rates imposed by the Fed to get inflation under control. A report on Tuesday from the Conference Board said confidence among U.S. consumers improved in November, but not by as much as economists expected. Kohl’s tumbled 17% after its results for the latest quarter fell short of analysts’ expectations. CEO Tom Kingsbury said sales remain soft for apparel and footwear. A day earlier, Kingsbury said he plans to step down as CEO in January. Ashley Buchanan, CEO of Michaels and a retail veteran, will replace him. Best Buy fell 4.9% after likewise falling short of analysts’ expectations. Dick’s Sporting Goods topped forecasts for the latest quarter thanks to a strong back-to-school season, but its stock lost an early gain to fall 1.4%. Still, more stocks rose in the S&P 500 than fell. J.M. Smucker had one of the biggest gains and climbed 5.7% after topping analysts’ expectations for the latest quarter. CEO Mark Smucker credited strength for its Uncrustables, Meow Mix, Café Bustelo and Jif brands. Big Tech stocks also helped prop up U.S. indexes. Gains of 3.2% for Amazon and 2.2% for Microsoft were the two strongest forces lifting the S&P 500. All told, the S&P 500 rose 34.26 points to 6,021.63. The Dow gained 123.74 to 44,860.31, and the Nasdaq composite climbed 119.46 to 19,174.30. In the bond market, Treasury yields held relatively steady following their big drop from a day before driven by relief following Trump’s pick for Treasury secretary. The yield on the 10-year Treasury inched up to 4.29% from 4.28% late Monday, but it’s still well below the 4.41% level where it ended last week. In the crypto market, bitcoin continued to pull back after topping $99,000 for the first time late last week. It’s since dipped back toward $91,000, according to CoinDesk. It’s a sharp turnaround from the bonanza that initially took over the crypto market following Trump’s election. That boom had also appeared to have spilled into some corners of the stock market. Strategists at Barclays Capital pointed to stocks of unprofitable companies, along with other areas that can be caught up in bursts of optimism by smaller-pocketed “retail” investors. AP Business Writer Elaine Kurtenbach contributed.
