In a decision filed on Saturday, a probate commissioner in Nevada concluded that Murdoch, 93, and his son, Lachlan Murdoch, had acted in “bad faith” in their endeavor to amend the irrevocable trust, The New York Times reported on Monday. The trust divides control of the company equally among four of Rupert Murdoch’s children — Prudence, Elisabeth, Lachlan and James — after he dies. Lachlan Murdoch has been the head of Fox News and News Corp since late last year, when his father stepped down. The elder Murdoch has argued that to preserve his businesses’ commercial value for all his heirs, the trust must be changed to allow Lachlan Murdoch to maintain Fox News' conservative bent. James and Elisabeth Murdoch are both known to have less-conservative political views than their father or brother, potentially complicating efforts to ensure that Fox News remains conservative. In his 96-page opinion, Nevada Probate Commissioner Edmund J. Gorman Jr. of the Second Judicial District Court characterized the plan to change the trust as a “carefully crafted charade” to “permanently cement Lachlan Murdoch’s executive roles” inside the empire “regardless of the impacts such control would have over the companies or the beneficiaries” of the family trust. Adam Streisand, a lawyer for Rupert Murdoch, told the newspaper that his client and his client's son were disappointed with the ruling and intended to appeal. A spokesperson for Prudence, Elisabeth and James Murdoch said in an emailed statement to The Associated Press that they welcome the ruling and hope that their family can “move beyond this litigation to focus on strengthening and rebuilding relationships among all family members.” Gorman in his conclusion said: “The effort was an attempt to stack the deck in Lachlan Murdoch’s favor after Rupert Murdoch’s passing so that his succession would be immutable. They have had dark fantasies and sometimes post pictures with their face painted to look like blood dripping. I am beside myself with worry that a bad stretch of mental health stress could lead to something devastating. I do not live in the same state. Is there someone I should alert? – Concerned Relative Dear Relative: If you have knowledge of a specific threat, you need to contact the local authorities and your nephew. It’s not clear from your letter if the dark fantasies fall into that category, so please exercise judgment and caution. If your concern is mostly related to the child’s mental health, you should make sure your nephew is aware of the posts. It’s not a crime to have mental health struggles; you’ll want to avoid treating it as such. Prioritize ensuring that the child is in a safe environment. I know it’s hard to reconcile the presence of the rifles in the home with your otherwise positive impression of your nephew’s parenting, but getting into a debate won’t serve anyone right now. It’s also not a crime to be a responsible gun owner. The keyword is responsible. Express your concerns and ask specific questions about the storage of the guns. Chef Ric's has reopened its storefront after an electrical fire forced the restaurant to close for one week. The fire happened on the morning of Nov. 20. Chef Ric Watson, executive director of food services for the Ottawa Mission, says the Rideau Street restaurant was able to reopen on Wednesday after cleaning and repairs were completed. "Many of our customers are really happy that we've reopened," Watson told CTV Morning Live on Thursday. "Everyone is good the staff are good. Everybody is just happy to be back in the building." The small fire started in kitchen area of the restaurant. While the damage was minimal, the restaurant had to close its dining services and catering. There were no injuries. The social enterprise business was opened by Watson in 2021 to support the Mission and provide affordable breakfast and lunches to the community. The restaurant also provides catering services and is home to the Mission's food services training program. "It’s a busy season," Watson said. "We're getting ready for our Giving Tuesday, which is coming up. Because of the mail strike, were asking people to go online or call in with their donations." Giving Tuesday will be held on Dec. 2 and donations from the event will go to support the Ottawa Mission. Donations can be made at OttawaMission.com or at 613-234-1155.
