TORONTO – Jakob Poeltl, Kelly Olynyk and Davion Mitchell will all return to the Toronto Raptors lineup tonight against the Dallas Mavericks. Poeltl missed Toronto’s 129-92 loss to the visiting Oklahoma City Thunder on Thursday due to illness. Mitchell was listed as questionable with right hip stiffness after that loss, but Raptors head coach Dakro Rajakovic says he’s available against Dallas. It will be Olynyk’s first time playing in the 2024-25 season after missing the entire pre-season and first 23 games of the campaign with back spasms. Olynyk, who was born in Toronto but grew up in Kamloops, B.C., will add significant depth to the Raptors’ rotation. He averaged 12.7 points, 5.6 rebounds, and 4.6 assists in 28 games for Toronto last season after he was traded to the Raptors by the Utah Jazz on Feb. 8. Kay Granger of Texas is having "unforeseen health challenges” that have worsened in the final months of her more than two decades in Congress, a statement from her office said Monday. Granger, 81, has not cast a vote in Washington since July. In a statement provided by her office, Granger said she has been “navigating some unforeseen health challenges over the past year" but did not specify or elaborate. “However, since early September, my health challenges have progressed making frequent travel to Washington both difficult and unpredictable,” the statement said. Granger’s office did not immediately respond to questions emailed Monday about her condition or why they did not publicly disclose her health status earlier. Messages left with Granger's family also were not immediately returned. Granger announced in 2023 that she would not seek reelection, saying at the time that it was time for a new generation of leaders to step up. Granger also announced in March that she would step down as chair of the powerful House Appropriations Committee. First elected to Texas' 12th Congressional District in 1996, Granger was the first Republican woman elected to represent the state in the U.S. House. Before that, she was the mayor of Fort Worth. Her seat will be filled in January by Republican Craig Goldman , a former Texas House member, who was elected to the district that includes parts of Fort Worth, western Tarrant County and most of neighboring Parker County. Juggernaut Marketing Wins the 2024 Quality Business Award for The Best Advertising Agency in Medford, OregonTORONTO - Utah’s NHL team was forced to walk to their game against the Maple Leafs after their bus got stuck in Toronto traffic Sunday night, prompting Premier Doug Ford to call the city’s gridlock “embarrassing.” The Utah Hockey Club posted on social media a video of team members marching to Scotiabank Arena, with player Maveric Lamoureux saying the bus was “not moving at all.” Several city streets had been closed during the day for the annual Santa Claus parade. “I think that’s a first for everyone,” Lamoureux quipped in the video as the group walked along the downtown streets. “Never saw that before.” The viral incident prompted Premier Doug Ford to call the road congestion “unacceptable,” highlighting his government’s plan to address the city’s gridlock through bike lane legislation. “We’re really focused on the congestion in Toronto,” he said Monday at an unrelated press conference. “It’s the worst congested city in North America, third worst in the entire world, even to the point last night it was embarrassing that the Utah Hockey Club has to get out of the bus and start walking to the hockey arena.” Ford said people are “avoiding downtown” due to the traffic, pointing to bike lanes as part of the problem. Ontario passed a divisive bike lane bill on Monday that will require municipalities to get the province’s approval to install bike lanes when they would remove a lane for vehicles. The bill also removes sections of bike lanes in Toronto and restores them as lanes for vehicle traffic. At a press conference on Monday, Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow pointed to the Santa Claus parade as the cause of Sunday’s gridlock. “All the big floats and the people flooding out from the Santa Claus parade was jamming that whole area,” Chow said. “It was just because of that reason.” Chow said while she’s glad the Leafs won the game, she’s sorry the Utah team got caught in the congestion. “Santa didn’t conspire together with the Leafs,” she said. Chow had said in September that the city’s traffic congestion measures are working, according to data that shows travel times along certain corridors have sped up. The Utah Hockey Club’s walk to the arena wasn’t the first time a Toronto visitor had to ditch their vehicle to make it to an event on time. In June, former One Direction band member Niall Horan had to walk through bumper-to-bumper traffic to get to his concert at Scotiabank Arena. “Traffic’s too bad in Toronto, so we’re walking to the venue,” he said in a social media post at the time. “In all the years playing shows, I don’t think I ever walked to a venue.” This report by The Canadian Press was first published Nov. 25, 2024.

Notation Labs Secures $2 Million Credit Facility to Accelerate Production of QwelTM, a Cutting-Edge Lead Detection and Prevention SystemNEW YORK (AP) — U.S. stock indexes got back to climbing on Wednesday after the latest update on inflation appeared to clear the way for more help for the economy from the Federal Reserve . The S&P 500 rose 0.8% to break its first two-day losing streak in nearly a month and finished just short of its all-time high. Big Tech stocks led the way, which drove the Nasdaq composite up 1.8% to top the 20,000 level for the first time. The Dow Jones Industrial Average, meanwhile, lagged the market with a dip of 99 points, or 0.2%. Stocks got a boost as expectations built that Wednesday’s inflation data will allow the Fed to deliver another cut to interest rates at its meeting next week. Traders are betting on a nearly 99% probability of that, according to data from CME Group, up from 89% a day before. If they’re correct, it would be a third straight cut by the Fed after it began lowering rates in September from a two-decade high. It’s hoping to support a slowing job market after getting inflation nearly all the way down to its 2% target. Lower rates would give a boost to the economy and to prices for investments, but they could also provide more fuel for inflation. “The data have given the Fed the ‘all clear’ for next week, and today’s inflation data keep a January cut in active discussion,” according to Ellen Zentner, chief economic strategist for Morgan Stanley Wealth Management. Expectations for a series of cuts to rates by the Fed have been one of the main reasons the S&P 500 has set an all-time high 57 times this year , with the latest coming last week. The biggest boosts for the index on Wednesday came from Nvidia and other Big Tech stocks. Their massive growth has made them Wall Street’s biggest stars for years, though other kinds of stocks have recently been catching up somewhat amid hopes for the broader U.S. economy. Tesla jumped 5.9% to finish above $420 at $424.77. It’s a level that Elon Musk made famous in a 2018 tweet when he said he had secured funding to take Tesla private at $420 per share . Stitch Fix soared 44.3% after the company that sends clothes to your door reported a smaller loss for the latest quarter than analysts expected. It also gave financial forecasts for the current quarter that were better than expected, including for revenue. GE Vernova rallied 5% for one of the biggest gains in the S&P 500. The energy company that spun out of General Electric said it would pay a 25 cent dividend every three months, and it approved a plan to send up to another $6 billion to its shareholders by buying back its own stock. On the losing end of Wall Street, Dave & Buster’s Entertainment tumbled 20.1% after reporting a worse loss for the latest quarter than expected. It also said CEO Chris Morris has resigned, and the board has been working with an executive-search firm for the last few months to find its next permanent leader. Albertsons fell 1.5% after filing a lawsuit against Kroger, saying it didn’t do enough for their proposed $24.6 billion merger agreement to win regulatory clearance. Albertsons said it’s seeking billions of dollars in damages from Kroger, whose stock rose 1%. A day earlier, judges in separate cases in Oregon and Washington nixed the supermarket giants’ merger. The grocers contended a combination could have helped them compete with big retailers like Walmart, Costco and Amazon, but critics said it would hurt competition. After terminating the merger agreement with Kroger, Albertsons said it plans to boost its dividend 25% and increased the size of its program to buy back its own stock. Macy’s slipped 0.8% after cutting some of its financial forecasts for the full year of 2024, including for how much profit it expects to make off each $1 of revenue. All told, the S&P 500 rose 49.28 points to 6,084.19. The Dow dipped 99.27 to 44,148.56, and the Nasdaq composite rallied 347.65 to 20,034.89. In the bond market, the yield on the 10-year Treasury rose to 4.27% from 4.23% late Tuesday. The two-year Treasury yield, which more closely tracks expectations for the Fed, edged up to 4.15% from 4.14%. In stock markets abroad, indexes rose across much of Europe and Asia. Hong Kong’s Hang Seng was an outlier and slipped 0.8% as Chinese leaders convened an annual planning meeting in Beijing that is expected to set economic policies and growth targets for the coming year. South Korea’s Kospi rose 1%, up for a second straight day as it climbs back following last week’s political turmoil where its president briefly declared martial law. Special Counsel Jack Smith on Monday moved to dismiss the federal cases against US President-elect Donald Trump -- including one for election subversion -- citing an official policy of not prosecuting a sitting president. Trump, 78, was accused of conspiring to overturn the results of the 2020 election he lost to Joe Biden and mishandling classified documents after leaving the White House, but neither case ever came to trial. Smith, in a filing with the district judge in Washington presiding over the election case, said it should be dropped in light of the long-standing Justice Department policy of not indicting or prosecuting a sitting president. He cited the same reasoning in withdrawing his appeal of a ruling by a district judge, a Trump appointee, who dismissed the classified documents case earlier this year. Smith asked District Judge Tanya Chutkan to dismiss the election interference case "without prejudice" -- leaving open the possibility it could be revived after Trump leaves office four years from now. The special counsel paused the election interference case this month after Trump defeated Vice President Kamala Harris in the November 5 presidential election. "The Government's position on the merits of the defendant's prosecution has not changed," Smith said in the filing with Chutkan. "But the circumstances have." "It has long been the position of the Department of Justice that the United States Constitution forbids the federal indictment and subsequent criminal prosecution of a sitting President," Smith said. "As a result this prosecution must be dismissed before the defendant is inaugurated." In a separate filing, Smith said he was withdrawing his appeal of the dismissal of the classified documents case against Trump but pursuing the case against his two co-defendants, Trump valet Walt Nauta and Mar-a-Lago property manager Carlos De Oliveira. Trump, in a post on Truth Social, said the cases were "empty and lawless, and should never have been brought." "Over $100 Million Dollars of Taxpayer Dollars has been wasted in the Democrat Party's fight against their Political Opponent, ME," he said. "Nothing like this has ever happened in our Country before." Trump is accused of conspiracy to defraud the United States and conspiracy to obstruct an official proceeding -- the session of Congress called to certify Biden's win, which was violently attacked on January 6, 2021 by a mob of the then-president's supporters. Trump is also accused of seeking to disenfranchise US voters with his false claims that he won the 2020 election. The former and incoming president also faces two state cases -- in New York and Georgia. He was convicted in New York in May of 34 counts of falsifying business records to cover up a hush money payment to porn star Stormy Daniels on the eve of the 2016 election to stop her from revealing an alleged 2006 sexual encounter. Judge Juan Merchan has postponed sentencing while he considers a request from Trump's lawyers that the conviction be thrown out in light of the Supreme Court ruling in July that an ex-president has broad immunity from prosecution. In Georgia, Trump faces racketeering charges over his efforts to subvert the 2020 election results in the southern state, but that case will likely be frozen while he is in office. cl/bgs

General Election candidate Eoghan Kenny has said he suffered an epileptic seizure just before going on air on RTÉ Radio last week. The Labour Party candidate for Cork North Central said he is “proud to be an epileptic” and recalled the experience on social media this evening. “Politicians are normal. That's a phrase that I've inherited this week,” said the Cork County Councillor. He revealed he suffered an epileptic seizure in the RTÉ studios last Tuesday, just before going on RTÉ Radio One’s Drivetime . "The politicians in the room, what some might consider rivals of mine in the upcoming general election, I now consider them colleagues of mine in the political sphere,” he said. “They came to my assistance, along with the staff of RTÉ and the two paramedics as well. “Just to say that I'm very grateful for the assistance that I received but I am absolutely perfect and driving on my campaign. “It proves a point that people with medical conditions can go into the public eye and represent people, whether it be locally or nationally,” he said. We need your consent to load this Social Media content. We use a number of different Social Media outlets to manage extra content that can set cookies on your device and collect data about your activity. Mr Kenny highlighted that his condition doesn’t affect his job as a public representative. "It's important to realise that it hasn't affected my job since February, since I became a councillor, and that it's a condition that I have to live with and a condition that I'm very proud to live with,” he added. The general election candidate from Mallow praised Epilepsy Ireland – a charity supporting people living with the condition. He also shared advice on how to help someone who suffers an epileptic seizure. “I'm very proud of the fact that Epilepsy Ireland are great advocates for people who are suffering with epilepsy to over 1,200 people in Cork North-Central. “I'm grateful for the work that they do in promoting epilepsy awareness and I would encourage everybody to remember these three words: stay, time and safe. "Stay with the person, time the seizure and make sure the person is safe. "Of course, I wanted to own this story myself. It's my story to tell and I didn't want it to be told by anybody else,” he added. "I'm proud to say that I'm very, very good now after my seizure on Tuesday. "I'm hoping to win this seat in Cork North-Central, but I can only do that with your support next Friday,” he added.Rogers Communications Inc. Cl B stock outperforms market despite losses on the day

TikTok is challenging the federal government’s order to shut down its operations in Canada. The company filed in documents in Federal Court in Vancouver on Thursday. The government ordered the dissolution of TikTok’s Canadian business in November after a national security review of the Chinese company behind the social media platform. That means TikTok must “wind down” its operations in Canada, though the app will continue to be available to Canadians. TikTok wants the court to overturn the government’s order and to place a pause on the order while the court hears the case. It is claiming the minister’s decision was “unreasonable” and “driven by improper purposes.” The review was carried out through the Investment Canada Act, which allows the government to investigate any foreign investment with potential to harm national security. Industry Minister François-Philippe Champagne said in a statement at the time the government was taking action to address “specific national security risks,” though it didn’t specify what those risks were. TikTok’s filing says Champagne “failed to engage with TikTok Canada on the purported substance of the concerns that led to the (order.)” The company argues the government ordered “measures that bear no rational connection to the national security risks it identifies.” It says the reasons for the order “are unintelligible, fail to reveal a rational chain of analysis and are rife with logical fallacies.” The company’s law firm, Osler Hoskin & Harcourt LLP, declined to comment, while Champagne’s office did not immediately respond to a request for comment. A TikTok spokesperson said in a statement that the order would “eliminate the jobs and livelihoods of our hundreds of dedicated local employees — who support the community of more than 14 million monthly Canadian users on TikTok, including businesses, advertisers, creators and initiatives developed especially for Canada.” This report by The Canadian Press was first published Dec. 10, 2024. The Left doesn't like opposing viewpoints. That's not news. But what's really telling is the way the Left treats people from typically Left-leaning groups who don't toe their political line. Whether it's women or Blacks or actors, the Left thinks they own these groups and their votes -- and they get downright nasty when someone strays from the flock. This writer has been a fan of Zachary Levi since he starred on 'Chuck', and -- even though she doesn't know him personally -- he seems like a genuinely nice guy. But he's committed the ultimate political sin: he supports Donald Trump . Doing that publicly takes guts, because it'll likely cost him jobs and friendships (cause Hollywood isn't exactly a bastion of tolerance). And here's Variety proving the point by publishing this nasty high-school mean girl piece from a former co-star of Levi's: “I never liked him," Laura Benanti says of Zachary Levi. "Everyone was like, ‘He’s so great!’ And I was like, ‘No, he’s not. He’s sucking up all the f---ing energy in this room. He wants to mansplain everybody’s part to them.'” https://t.co/tIS9jszVaB This writer also really likes movies and Broadway and has never heard of Laura Benanti, for what it's worth. This is what happens when you have the stones to break the narrative. Hold the line, Zachary Hold the line. Who's Laurie Benanti? Serious question. Exactly. It sounds like she’s just bitter and unhappy. This article makes her sound non-credible. Was that the intent of the article? To smear Levi. Nothing more. Are there still people who don't know that the second someone uses the term mansplain they are a childish dimwit with nothing to offer? Mansplain: He was smarter and more articulate, and I'm mad There is no such thing as 'mansplaining.' It's a word hypersensitive women use when they don't want men talking to them. Dear Variety, you guys are despicable hatemongers. You have helped poison the industry Hold the line Zachary, you are a hero. Yes, he is. I’ve heard of @ZacharyLevi . However, I’ve never hear of Laura Benanti. The era of attacking past co-stars as a means to impress the judges at the Victim Olympics is over. It does not result in more work. In fact, it simply telegraphs one’s capacity to torpedo projects, past,... https://t.co/LXIAaux59Z All of this. She's clearly mad at his vaccine stance but has nothing specifically bad to say about him so it's just vague gobbledygook with "mansplaining" thrown in there because that one always works with no details necessary. https://t.co/3JatjSYc3y pic.twitter.com/TUCelf7dD7 And Variety decided to run with this. If everyone liked him and you didn’t, maybe... I dunno... you’re the problem? https://t.co/nI5tWHHNIs Yeah, she might be the problem here. This writer is willing to bet Levi will have nothing but nice things to say about Benanti, proving that he's the good guy and the bigger person.

With Donald Trump headed back to the White House and hawkish Sen. Marco Rubio picked as his secretary of state, the island’s leadership is bracing for what comes next. Hunger, blackouts, hurricanes and earthquakes already have the country reeling, and speculation is building that the incoming administration will further tighten the screws. “There’s nothing very positive that can be expected from a Trump administration,” said Omar Everleny Perez, a Cuban economist based in Havana who has taught at Harvard and Columbia universities and worked as a visiting scholar at the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta. “In the minds of most Cubans is the thought of getting out.” During the presidential campaign and on Capitol Hill, Trump and Rubio talked about the need for regime change in Havana. For the Florida senator, the issue has particular significance: He’s the son of Cuban immigrants and made his heritage and opposition to communism central to his conservative political identity. That makes it all the more likely Trump will bring back the “maximum pressure” approach of his first term, when he tightened sanctions and scared off investors by returning Cuba to a list of state sponsors of terrorism. A spokesperson for the incoming administration declined to comment directly on policy toward Cuba, noting Trump was elected “to lead our country and restore peace through strength around the world.” Trump is the first Republican presidential candidate since 1988 to win Miami-Dade County, home to many Cuban exiles. The island of 11 million people is staggering under inflation, food shortages, crop failure and the repeated collapse of its power grid. A full 10% of the population fled the country since 2020. As public discontent grows, Cuba stepped up arrests of dissidents and warned citizens not to protest. Trump’s team likely will “look for creative ways to exacerbate the chasm that is existing right now in Cuba between the people and the regime,” said Jose Cardenas, who worked on Latin America issues under former President George W. Bush and now serves as an independent consultant in Washington. Though President Joe Biden left much of Trump’s prior Cuba policy intact, Cardenas expects the new administration will quickly take action against President Miguel Diaz-Canel in Havana and Nicolas Maduro in Caracas, Venezuela. Rubio will “seek to regain some momentum and go on the offensive — but not in a provocative, ham-handed way,” Cardenas said. It isn’t yet clear how the incoming administration’s stance toward Latin America will be affected by Trump’s pledge to round up migrants and deport them en masse. Rubio will have to figure out how to navigate that promise along with the U.S.’s long-standing practice of offering an escape to people fleeing far-left regimes in the region, according to Ana Sofia Pelaez, co-founder of the Miami Freedom Project, which works with migrants in South Florida. In 2023, the Biden administration allowed Cuban, Venezuelan, Nicaraguan and Haitian migrants to apply for two-year emergency visas. More than 125,000 Cubans entered the U.S. under the program. On top of economic and humanitarian woes, Cuba also faces questions of legitimacy, according to Andres Pertierra, a Cuban-American historian who was doing doctoral research on the island for eight months this year until the power crisis forced the archives to close. Since the revolution led by Fidel Castro, the government ruled with a tacit bargain: Caribbean communism couldn’t provide the same level of material goods as U.S. capitalism, but it would build a robust social safety net. It would also foster a sense of collective pride, despite the imposition of a security state that severely restricts political rights. That setup unraveled, and “this is probably the biggest point of weakness and vulnerability in the government’s history since 1959, not least because Fidel is not there,” Pertierra said from Madison, Wis. The Cuban Embassy in Washington didn’t respond to a request for comment. In almost every regard, the situation in Cuba is worse now than it was in the 1990s, after the fall of the Soviet Union brought hunger and hardship. “Education is imploding, health care is catastrophic,” said Andres Pertierra, a Cuban-American historian who was doing doctoral research on the island for eight months this year until the power crisis forced the archives to close. “There’s no medicine, there’s no equipment, the infrastructure is falling apart.” That Cuban society is now divided into those with access to hard currency — often thanks to relatives abroad — and those without, which is fueling increasing discontent. Those with enough money can still buy food. But while allowing the nascent private sector to import and sell groceries prevented the weight loss Cubans suffered in the late 1990s, it also highlights “the inequality and the broken promises of the system,” said Pertierra, the son of a lawyer who defended Elian Gonzalez’s return to Cuba in a bitter custody case against the boy’s Miami relatives more than two decades ago. State-run media recently provided a grim snapshot of the hunger crisis: Some 1,615 people were convicted of illegally killing cows this year, risking prison terms of up to 10 years. Everleny Perez argued the Cuban regime’s best chance of surviving the next Trump administration is for the government to make good on its promise to support the private sector.Stock market today: Wall Street gets back to climbing, and the Nasdaq tops 20,000
