eyd q740 NEW YORK -- A photography exhibit unveiled this month in Harlem shines a light on the lens of those living with mental illnesses and recovering from substance abuse. The artists found their voice at the Emma L. Bowen Community Service Center. "It's where my father taught me to ride a bike," said Rainbow Clubhouse member Miguelina Jaquez, reciting a poem she wrote. "That's even where I learned how to fight. The playground..." The jungle gym outside the Bowen Center has been a central figure for Jaquez since her counseling started in childhood. "From an early age of 14, I'm 60 now," Jaquez recited in a separate verse, "not realizing how this world could be so mean." Jaquez's poetry and photos focus on a promise of positivity, a theme seen in each of the images in the exhibit Cafe Photo Voice: The Sequel. "The message that they wanted to provide was amazing," said Rhaida Maldonado, a social worker who helped with the exhibit before recently graduating from Adelphi University. "In their writing, it's actually uplifting something that could be considered ugly, but it's so beautiful, depending on how you see it." The creations come from clients in the Bowen Center's substance abuse recovery program and the Rainbow Clubhouse, a safe space for members with mental challenges, like Denver Chapman, whose collages combine sunshine, comfort foods and fun to inspire collaboration. "It's just nice to have people working together on the same thing and see how they all act together or how they're all different," Chapman said. Together, the photographers fulfilled a familiar need for connection, in the face of city budget cuts that threatened to close the Clubhouse, which never came. "We always focus on member goals, and these are their goals," said Rainbow Clubhouse program director Lilibeth Marchena. "They want to be poets. They want to be artists." "That expression really takes the typical therapeutic intervention and expands it to something that feels very personal for them," added Ana Rodgers, program director for the Bowen Center's Community Behavioral Health Clinic. Assisting with expression were social workers studying at Adelphi University, their second round since the project's first pandemic-era phase. "Photos like...The Addicted Feet really speak to people's experiences with substance use and how it's not easy to recover," noted Chrisann Newransky, an associate professor at Adephi's School of Social Work. "You don't stay stuck, and I'm glad I'm still alive because I've still got brothers dying," Jaquez said. Bowen Center's counselors are coordinating with clients ahead of services shifting 10 blocks south when their city-owned building is bulldozed in January. The new supportive housing complex being constructed in its place will include space for the Bowen Center to return upon its completion. The Photo Voice exhibit will travel to Adelphi in the spring, before finding a permanent home in the Bowen Center's new space. Have a story idea or tip in Harlem? Email Jessi by CLICKING HERE . KINGSTON, Jamaica — The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade is reminding Jamaicans to observe the immigration laws of countries they visit, which it says may change over time. Travellers are also advised to ensure they meet all entry requirements before embarking on trips to avoid complications such as detention or deportation and ensure safe and trouble-free journeys. The warning follows several recent social media reports alleging mistreatment in Mexico when detained upon arrival. In one case, a woman alleged that she was detained for three days without food and other necessities, and was forced to sign papers officials refused to translate. She further alleged that she was refused the right to speak to a Jamaican consulate. In a statement on Wednesday, Minister Kamina Johnson Smith said her ministry is actively working to address reports of immigration challenges faced by Jamaicans at foreign ports of entry. She said the Government has been engaging with relevant authorities to resolve these issues and encourages Jamaicans who believe their rights have been infringed to make reports by email to consular@mfaft.gov.jm for investigation. In the meantime, the ministry is reminding all Jamaicans to observe the immigration laws of the countries they visit. “In 2023, the ministry advised that a more restrictive approach was being taken by Mexico and other Central American authorities to reduce the misuse of their borders to enter the United States of America illegally. The Government therefore strongly urged and continues to encourage Jamaicans to refrain from this practice, which negatively impacts the travel experience for law-abiding Jamaicans at these ports of entry,” Johnson Smith explained. She continued, “While we stand ready to defend and protect the rights of our citizens overseas, we regret to remind that the Government of Jamaica cannot insist that any state allow non-nationals to enter that state. No citizen has a right to enter another country other than their own. We can therefore only work to prevent the contravention of basic rights, particularly in terms of unlawful detention or mistreatment.” Johnson Smith is encouraging Jamaicans to continuously evaluate their travel plans and assess their destinations according to various indicators. Travellers are also encouraged to stay updated on immigration trends in the countries they wish to visit, so that they can make the best travel decisions, the ministry said. Jamaicans encountering difficulties while abroad are encouraged to contact the nearest Jamaican mission — Embassy, High Commission, Consulate-General or Consulate, for assistance. For immediate assistance during emergencies overseas, nationals may also reach the ministry via WhatsApp messages at +1 876 391-8105.

On Dec. 4, the Duke of Sussex, 40, stepped out in N.Y.C. to attend the 2024 DealBook Summit organized by . Prince Harry joined Andrew Ross Sorkin, a columnist and founder of the outlet's DealBook business and policy column, for a conversation on the main stage about disinformation in the media. "I've seen stories written about myself not exactly based in reality." Prince Harry said at the event. "When you grow up with that environment, you find yourself questioning the validity of the information, but also what other people are thinking as well, and how dangerous it can be over the course of time." "I think again, when you are kind of trapped within this bubble, it kind of feels like there's no way out," he added. "What happened to my mom and the fact that I was a kid and felt helpless, there comes the inner turmoil. I felt helpless. One of my biggest weaknesses is feeling helpless." Harry said, "What worried me most was worrying that would happen to me, or to my wife, or to my kids." Eugene Gologursky/Getty Of reading about himself in the press, he told Sorkin, "Throughout my life there would be moments in my life when I read a lot and moments when I read nothing. I highly recommend the latter," he added to laughter from the audience. "Once you stop reading the stuff about yourself, you automatically remove the power from their hands. With that element of fear comes an element of control. and one of the reasons I probably didn't, I guess, remove myself from that situation sooner was that very fear: 'Well, they control the narrative,' whatever I do or say, they can effectively control me and keep me in that space.'" Of his complicated relationship with the press since the death of his mother in 1997 when he was just 12 years old, he said: "I was always convinced I needed to be angry or frustrated towards the press because of what they did to my mom," adding that going to therapy a "blessing," like "cleaning the windshield." In these five years, the retaliation and the intimidation for me as a witness has been extraordinary, especially towards my wife and children." Of the dangers of social media, an issue that has become increasingly important to his work through his and Meghan's Archewell Foundation, he said: "I try to think at these things through the lens as a dad." Eugene Gologursky/Getty "That's one of the reasons we're so focused on The Parents Network," he said, referring to a piece of the work he and Meghan do with their non-profit Archewell for parents whose children's lives have been lost to social media. "It's not a coincidence that the world has become more volatile and more divided since social media has been around for 20 years," Harry added. Harry expressed his desire to collaborate with shareholders of social media companies to discuss better protections for children. “I would welcome the chance to sit down with the shareholders, because their shareholders are the ones that really are in control.” He added, “I’m sure they are parents, and I’m sure hopefully they would agree that kids need to be kept safe.” When asked what he thought of the First Amendment, he said to laughter, "There's no way I'm going to talk about that." Closing out his panel discussion, Sorkin asked Harry what he wants to be known for in 30 years' time, to which Harry replied: "The main goal for me at the moment is being the best husband and the best dad that I can be." "The thing that means the most to me and the things I want to be known for is that no matter what was happening around [is] that he stuck to his values and he always stayed true to that principle," he added.
