WASHINGTON (AP) — President Joe Biden said Sunday that the U.S. government believes missing American journalist Austin Tice, who disappeared 12 years ago near the Syrian capital, is alive and that Washington is committed to bringing him home after Bashar Assad’s ouster from power in Damascus. “We think we can get him back,” Biden told reporters at the White House, while acknowledging that “we have no direct evidence” of his status. “Assad should be held accountable.” Biden said officials must still identify exactly where Tice is after his disappearance in August 2012 at a checkpoint in a contested area west of Damascus. “We’ve remained committed to returning him to his family,” he said. Tice, who is from Houston and whose work had been published by The Washington Post, McClatchy newspapers and other outlets. A video released weeks after Tice went missing showed him blindfolded and held by armed men and saying, “Oh, Jesus.” He has not been heard from since. Syria has publicly denied that it was holding him. The United States has no new evidence that Tice is alive, but continues to operate under the assumption he is alive, according to a U.S. official. The official, who was not authorized to comment publicly and spoke on condition of anonymity, said the U.S. will continue to work to identify where he is and to try to bring him home. His mother, Debra, said at a news conference Friday in Washington that the family had information from a “significant source,” whom she did not identify, establishing that her son was alive. “He is being cared for and he is well — we do know that,” she said. The Tice family met this past week with officials at the State Department and the White House. “To everyone in Syria that hears this, please remind people that we’re waiting for Austin,” Debra Tice said in comments that hostage advocacy groups spread on social media Sunday. “We know that when he comes out, he’s going to be fairly dazed & he’s going to need lots of care & direction. Direct him to his family please!” AdvertisementThe world's most climate-imperilled nations stormed out of consultations in protest at the deadlocked UN COP29 conference Saturday, as simmering tensions over a hard-fought finance deal erupted into the open. Diplomats from small island nations threatened by rising seas and impoverished African states angrily filed out of a meeting with summit hosts Azerbaijan over a final deal being thrashed out in a Baku sports stadium. "We've just walked out. We came here to this COP for a fair deal. We feel that we haven't been heard," said Cedric Schuster, the Samoan chairman of the Alliance of Small Island States (AOSIS). An unpublished version of the final text circulating in Baku, and seen by AFP, proposes that rich nations raise to $300 billion a year by 2035 their commitment to poorer countries to fight climate change. COP29 hosts Azerbaijan intended to put a final draft before 198 nations for adoption or rejection on Saturday evening, a full day after the marathon summit officially ended. But, in a statement, AOSIS said it had "removed" itself from the climate finance discussions, demanding an "inclusive" process. "If this cannot be the case, it becomes very difficult for us to continue our involvement here at COP29," it said. Sierra Leone's climate minister Jiwoh Abdulai, whose country is among the world's poorest, said the draft was "effectively a suicide pact for the rest of the world". An earlier offer from rich nations of $250 billion was slammed as offensively low by developing countries, who have demanded much higher sums to build resilience against climate change and cut emissions. UK Energy Secretary Ed Miliband said the revised offer of $300 billion was "a significant scaling up" of the existing pledge by developed nations, which also count the United States, European Union and Japan among their ranks. At sunset, a final text still proved elusive, as harried diplomats ran to-and-fro in the stadium near the Caspian Sea searching for common ground. "Hopefully this is the storm before the calm," said US climate envoy John Podesta in the corridors as somebody shouted "shame" in his direction. Earlier, the EU's climate commissioner Wopke Hoekstra said negotiators were not out of the woods yet. "We're doing everything we can on each of the axes to build bridges and to make this into a success. But it is iffy whether we will succeed," he said. Ali Mohamed, the Kenyan chair of the African Group of Negotiators, told AFP: "No deal is better than a bad deal." South African environment minister Dion George, however, said: "I think being ambitious at this point is not going to be very useful." "What we are not up for is going backwards or standing still," he said. "We might as well just have stayed at home then." The revised offer from rich countries came with conditions in other parts of the broader climate deal under discussion in Azerbaijan. The EU in particular wants an annual review on global efforts to phase out fossil fuels, which are the main drivers of global warming. This has run into opposition from Saudi Arabia, which has sought to water down a landmark pledge to transition away from oil, gas and coal made at COP28 last year. "We will not allow the most vulnerable, especially the small island states, to be ripped off by the new, few rich fossil fuel emitters," said German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock. Wealthy nations counter that it is politically unrealistic to expect more in direct government funding. The US earlier this month elected former president Donald Trump, a sceptic of both climate change and foreign assistance, and a number of other Western countries have seen right-wing backlashes against the green agenda. A coalition of more than 300 activist groups accused historic polluters most responsible for climate change of skirting their obligation, and urged developing nations to stand firm. The draft deal posits a larger overall target of $1.3 trillion per year to cope with rising temperatures and disasters, but most would come from private sources. Even $300 billion would be a step up from the $100 billion now provided by wealthy nations under a commitment set to expire. A group of developing countries had demanded at least $500 billion, with some saying that increases were less than met the eye due to inflation. Experts commissioned by the United Nations to assess the needs of developing countries said $250 billion was "too low" and by 2035 rich nations should be providing at least $390 billion. The US and EU have wanted newly wealthy emerging economies like China -- the world's largest emitter -- to chip in. China, which remains classified as a developing nation under the UN framework, provides climate assistance but wants to keep doing so on its own voluntary terms. bur-np-sct/lth/giv

LOS ANGELES — Considering how their seasons have ebbed and flowed so far, and the history between the stars leading their teams, it’s only appropriate that the Lakers and Golden State Warriors match up for a Christmas Day showdown on Wednesday at Chase Center. Just a month ago, the Lakers and Warriors were sitting near the top of the Western Conference standings, opening the season with 10-5 and 12-3 records, respectively, entering Nov. 23. How much a month can change things. The Lakers (16-13) have gone 6-8 since then after dropping Monday’s home game to the Detroit Pistons to end their three-game winning streak. And the Warriors (15-13) have been even worse, winning just three of their last 13 games after starting the year at the top of the conference. But Wednesday will be another matchup between Lakers star LeBron James and Warriors star Steph Curry – two all-time greats whose careers have intersected to the point they’re considered by many to have one of the defining rivalries of the league’s modern era. “Anytime you get an opportunity to be on the court and compete versus one of the greats to ever play this game, you never take it for granted,” James said. “I don’t know how many more opportunities we’re gonna get to go against each other, so it’s always fun.” Wednesday will also mark the second time the Lakers and Warriors have played each other on Christmas in the past seven years, with the Lakers beating the Warriors on Dec. 25, 2018, in James’ first season with the Lakers. In addition to the 2018 matchup , James’ and Curry’s teams squared off on Christmas for three consecutive seasons (2015-17) when James was on the Cleveland Cavaliers. Curry didn’t play in the 2017 game. But matchups between James and Curry have historically had more at stake than Christmas Day game bragging rights. Their teams matched up in four consecutive NBA Finals (2015-18), with Curry’s Warriors winning the championship in 2015, ‘17 and ‘18 and James’ Cavaliers coming out on top in ’16 after coming back from a 3-1 series. “For me, as a fan, it was an awesome stretch,” Lakers coach JJ Redick said. “For me as a player, it wasn’t a great stretch because I wasn’t in those Finals. But it was great to have two of the icons of this generation go head to head and have some for sure classic series and then just also some classic games and classic moments. “Throughout the history of the NBA, player and team rivalries have been good for the league and that sort of captured a moment in our generation.” The Lakers and Warriors also played each other in the 2021 Play-In Tournament and the second round of the 2023 playoffs, with the Lakers winning both matchups “It’s going to be good,” Anthony Davis said. “We always have battles with them, we’ve seen them in the playoffs a couple of years. It’s going to be fun to go up to The Bay and try to get a win on Christmas Day.” Not including the Play-In Tournament game, Wednesday will mark the 53rd matchup between a team led by James and Curry. Curry’s teams have a 29-23 record in those matchups, including a 17-11 record in the playoffs. But the relationship between James, who’s in his 22nd NBA season and will return 40 on Monday, and Curry, who’s in his 16th NBA season and will turn 37 in March, has evolved over the years since consistently playing against one another in the Finals. James and Curry teamed up this past summer, leading Team USA to a gold medal in the Paris Olympics. “It’s a fun battle because of the longevity of how long we’ve been doing this,” Curry said during an appearance on ESPN’s “NBA Today” on Tuesday. “There’s more appreciation and respect than probably back in the day because there was a lot of pettiness and resentment. The rivalry was real but it evolves and you still want to go at each other, but the respect is there.” Related Articles LAKERS AT WARRIORS When : Wednesday, 5 p.m. Where : Chase Center, San Francisco TV/radio : ABC/ESPN, 710 AM'It’s a surprise': Shoebox Project gives women impacted by homelessness a Christmas giftNone

He was 100 years old. The longest-lived American president died Sunday, more than a year after entering hospice care , at his home in the small town of Plains, Ga., where he and his wife, Rosalynn, who died at 96 in November 2023 , spent most of their lives, The Carter Center said. “Our founder, former U.S. President Jimmy Carter, passed away this afternoon in Plains, Georgia,” the center said in posting about his death on the social media platform X. It added in a statement that he died peacefully, surrounded by his family. Businessman, Navy officer, evangelist, politician, negotiator, author, woodworker, citizen of the world — Carter forged a path that still challenges political assumptions and stands out among the 45 men who reached the nation’s highest office. The 39th president leveraged his ambition with a keen intellect, deep religious faith and prodigious work ethic, conducting diplomatic missions into his 80s and building houses for the poor well into his 90s. “My faith demands — this is not optional — my faith demands that I do whatever I can, wherever I am, whenever I can, for as long as I can, with whatever I have to try to make a difference,” Carter once said. A moderate Democrat, Carter entered the 1976 presidential race as a little-known Georgia governor with a broad smile, outspoken Baptist mores and technocratic plans reflecting his education as an engineer. His no-frills campaign depended on public financing, and his promise not to deceive the American people resonated after Richard Nixon’s disgrace and U.S. defeat in southeast Asia. “If I ever lie to you, if I ever make a misleading statement, don’t vote for me. I would not deserve to be your president,” Carter repeated before narrowly beating Republican incumbent Gerald Ford, who had lost popularity pardoning Nixon. Carter governed amid Cold War pressures, turbulent oil markets and social upheaval over racism, women’s rights and America’s global role. His most acclaimed achievement in office was a Mideast peace deal that he brokered by keeping Egyptian President Anwar Sadat and Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin at the bargaining table for 13 days in 1978. That Camp David experience inspired the post-presidential center where Carter would establish so much of his legacy. Yet Carter’s electoral coalition splintered under double-digit inflation, gasoline lines and the 444-day hostage crisis in Iran. His bleakest hour came when eight Americans died in a failed hostage rescue in April 1980, helping to ensure his landslide defeat to Republican Ronald Reagan. Carter acknowledged in his 2020 White House Diary that he could be “micromanaging” and “excessively autocratic,” complicating dealings with Congress and the federal bureaucracy. He also turned a cold shoulder to Washington’s news media and lobbyists, not fully appreciating their influence on his political fortunes. “It didn’t take us long to realize that the underestimation existed, but by that time we were not able to repair the mistake,” Carter told historians in 1982, suggesting that he had “an inherent incompatibility” with Washington insiders. Carter insisted his overall approach was sound and that he achieved his primary objectives — to “protect our nation’s security and interests peacefully” and “enhance human rights here and abroad” — even if he fell spectacularly short of a second term. Ignominious defeat, though, allowed for renewal. The Carters founded The Carter Center in 1982 as a first-of-its-kind base of operations, asserting themselves as international peacemakers and champions of democracy, public health and human rights. “I was not interested in just building a museum or storing my White House records and memorabilia,” Carter wrote in a memoir published after his 90th birthday. “I wanted a place where we could work.” That work included easing nuclear tensions in North and South Korea, helping to avert a U.S. invasion of Haiti and negotiating cease-fires in Bosnia and Sudan. By 2022, The Carter Center had declared at least 113 elections in Latin America, Asia and Africa to be free or fraudulent. Recently, the center began monitoring U.S. elections as well. Carter’s stubborn self-assuredness and even self-righteousness proved effective once he was unencumbered by the Washington order, sometimes to the point of frustrating his successors . He went “where others are not treading,” he said, to places like Ethiopia, Liberia and North Korea, where he secured the release of an American who had wandered across the border in 2010. “I can say what I like. I can meet whom I want. I can take on projects that please me and reject the ones that don’t,” Carter said. He announced an arms-reduction-for-aid deal with North Korea without clearing the details with Bill Clinton’s White House. He openly criticized President George W. Bush for the 2003 invasion of Iraq. He also criticized America’s approach to Israel with his 2006 book Palestine: Peace Not Apartheid . And he repeatedly countered U.S. administrations by insisting North Korea should be included in international affairs, a position that most aligned Carter with Republican President Donald Trump. Among the center’s many public health initiatives, Carter vowed to eradicate the guinea worm parasite during his lifetime, and nearly achieved it: Cases dropped from millions in the 1980s to nearly a handful. With hardhats and hammers, the Carters also built homes with Habitat for Humanity. The Nobel committee’s 2002 Peace Prize cites his “untiring effort to find peaceful solutions to international conflicts, to advance democracy and human rights, and to promote economic and social development.” Carter should have won it alongside Sadat and Begin in 1978, the chairman added. Carter accepted the recognition saying there was more work to be done. “The world is now, in many ways, a more dangerous place,” he said. “The greater ease of travel and communication has not been matched by equal understanding and mutual respect.” Carter’s globetrotting took him to remote villages where he met little “Jimmy Carters,” so named by admiring parents. But he spent most of his days in the same one-story Plains house — expanded and guarded by Secret Service agents — where they lived before he became governor. He regularly taught Sunday School lessons at Maranatha Baptist Church until his mobility declined and the coronavirus pandemic raged. Those sessions drew visitors from around the world to the small sanctuary where Carter will receive his final send-off after a state funeral at Washington’s National Cathedral. The common assessment that he was a better ex-president than president rankled Carter and his allies. His prolific post-presidency gave him a brand above politics, particularly for Americans too young to witness him in office. But Carter also lived long enough to see biographers and historians reassess his White House years more generously. His record includes the deregulation of key industries, reduction of U.S. dependence on foreign oil, cautious management of the national debt and notable legislation on the environment, education and mental health. He focused on human rights in foreign policy, pressuring dictators to release thousands of political prisoners . He acknowledged America’s historical imperialism, pardoned Vietnam War draft evaders and relinquished control of the Panama Canal. He normalized relations with China. “I am not nominating Jimmy Carter for a place on Mount Rushmore,” Stuart Eizenstat, Carter’s domestic policy director, wrote in a 2018 book. “He was not a great president” but also not the “hapless and weak” caricature voters rejected in 1980, Eizenstat said. Rather, Carter was “good and productive” and “delivered results, many of which were realized only after he left office.” Madeleine Albright, a national security staffer for Carter and Clinton’s secretary of state, wrote in Eizenstat’s forward that Carter was “consequential and successful” and expressed hope that “perceptions will continue to evolve” about his presidency. “Our country was lucky to have him as our leader,” said Albright, who died in 2022. Jonathan Alter, who penned a comprehensive Carter biography published in 2020, said in an interview that Carter should be remembered for “an epic American life” spanning from a humble start in a home with no electricity or indoor plumbing through decades on the world stage across two centuries. “He will likely go down as one of the most misunderstood and underestimated figures in American history,” Alter told The Associated Press. James Earl Carter Jr. was born Oct. 1, 1924, in Plains and spent his early years in nearby Archery. His family was a minority in the mostly Black community, decades before the civil rights movement played out at the dawn of Carter’s political career. Carter, who campaigned as a moderate on race relations but governed more progressively, talked often of the influence of his Black caregivers and playmates but also noted his advantages: His land-owning father sat atop Archery’s tenant-farming system and owned a main street grocery. His mother, Lillian , would become a staple of his political campaigns. Seeking to broaden his world beyond Plains and its population of fewer than 1,000 — then and now — Carter won an appointment to the U.S. Naval Academy, graduating in 1946. That same year he married Rosalynn Smith, another Plains native, a decision he considered more important than any he made as head of state. She shared his desire to see the world, sacrificing college to support his Navy career. Carter climbed in rank to lieutenant, but then his father was diagnosed with cancer, so the submarine officer set aside his ambitions of admiralty and moved the family back to Plains. His decision angered Rosalynn, even as she dived into the peanut business alongside her husband. Carter again failed to talk with his wife before his first run for office — he later called it “inconceivable” not to have consulted her on such major life decisions — but this time, she was on board. “My wife is much more political,” Carter told the AP in 2021. He won a state Senate seat in 1962 but wasn’t long for the General Assembly and its back-slapping, deal-cutting ways. He ran for governor in 1966 — losing to arch-segregationist Lester Maddox — and then immediately focused on the next campaign. Carter had spoken out against church segregation as a Baptist deacon and opposed racist “Dixiecrats” as a state senator. Yet as a local school board leader in the 1950s he had not pushed to end school segregation even after the Supreme Court's Brown v. Board of Education decision, despite his private support for integration. And in 1970, Carter ran for governor again as the more conservative Democrat against Carl Sanders, a wealthy businessman Carter mocked as “Cufflinks Carl.” Sanders never forgave him for anonymous, race-baiting flyers, which Carter disavowed. Ultimately, Carter won his races by attracting both Black voters and culturally conservative whites. Once in office, he was more direct. “I say to you quite frankly that the time for racial discrimination is over,” he declared in his 1971 inaugural address, setting a new standard for Southern governors that landed him on the cover of Time magazine. His statehouse initiatives included environmental protection, boosting rural education and overhauling antiquated executive branch structures. He proclaimed Martin Luther King Jr. Day in the slain civil rights leader’s home state. And he decided, as he received presidential candidates in 1972, that they were no more talented than he was. In 1974, he ran Democrats’ national campaign arm. Then he declared his own candidacy for 1976. An Atlanta newspaper responded with the headline: “Jimmy Who?” The Carters and a “Peanut Brigade” of family members and Georgia supporters camped out in Iowa and New Hampshire, establishing both states as presidential proving grounds. His first Senate endorsement: a young first-termer from Delaware named Joe Biden. Yet it was Carter’s ability to navigate America’s complex racial and rural politics that cemented the nomination. He swept the Deep South that November, the last Democrat to do so, as many white Southerners shifted to Republicans in response to civil rights initiatives. A self-declared “born-again Christian,” Carter drew snickers by referring to Scripture in a Playboy magazine interview, saying he “had looked on many women with lust. I’ve committed adultery in my heart many times.” The remarks gave Ford a new foothold and television comedians pounced — including NBC’s new Saturday Night Live show. But voters weary of cynicism in politics found it endearing. Carter chose Minnesota Sen. Walter “Fritz” Mondale as his running mate on a “Grits and Fritz” ticket. In office, he elevated the vice presidency and the first lady’s office. Mondale’s governing partnership was a model for influential successors Al Gore, Dick Cheney and Biden. Rosalynn Carter was one of the most involved presidential spouses in history, welcomed into Cabinet meetings and huddles with lawmakers and top aides. The Carters presided with uncommon informality: He used his nickname “Jimmy” even when taking the oath of office, carried his own luggage and tried to silence the Marine Band’s “Hail to the Chief.” They bought their clothes off the rack. Carter wore a cardigan for a White House address, urging Americans to conserve energy by turning down their thermostats. Amy, the youngest of four children, attended District of Columbia public school. Washington’s social and media elite scorned their style. But the larger concern was that “he hated politics,” according to Eizenstat, leaving him nowhere to turn politically once economic turmoil and foreign policy challenges took their toll. Carter partially deregulated the airline, railroad and trucking industries and established the departments of Education and Energy, and the Federal Emergency Management Agency. He designated millions of acres of Alaska as national parks or wildlife refuges. He appointed a then-record number of women and nonwhite people to federal posts. He never had a Supreme Court nomination, but he elevated civil rights attorney Ruth Bader Ginsburg to the nation’s second highest court, positioning her for a promotion in 1993. He appointed Paul Volker, the Federal Reserve chairman whose policies would help the economy boom in the 1980s — after Carter left office. He built on Nixon’s opening with China, and though he tolerated autocrats in Asia, pushed Latin America from dictatorships to democracy. But he couldn’t immediately tame inflation or the related energy crisis. And then came Iran. After he admitted the exiled Shah of Iran to the U.S. for medical treatment, the American Embassy in Tehran was overrun in 1979 by followers of the Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini. Negotiations to free the hostages broke down repeatedly ahead of the failed rescue attempt. The same year, Carter signed SALT II, the new strategic arms treaty with Leonid Brezhnev of the Soviet Union, only to pull it back, impose trade sanctions and order a U.S. boycott of the Moscow Olympics after the Soviets invaded Afghanistan. Hoping to instill optimism, he delivered what the media dubbed his “malaise” speech, although he didn’t use that word. He declared the nation was suffering “a crisis of confidence.” By then, many Americans had lost confidence in the president, not themselves. Carter campaigned sparingly for reelection because of the hostage crisis, instead sending Rosalynn as Sen. Edward M. Kennedy challenged him for the Democratic nomination. Carter famously said he’d “kick his ass,” but was hobbled by Kennedy as Reagan rallied a broad coalition with “make America great again” appeals and asking voters whether they were “better off than you were four years ago.” Reagan further capitalized on Carter’s lecturing tone, eviscerating him in their lone fall debate with the quip: “There you go again.” Carter lost all but six states and Republicans rolled to a new Senate majority. Carter successfully negotiated the hostages’ freedom after the election, but in one final, bitter turn of events, Tehran waited until hours after Carter left office to let them walk free. At 56, Carter returned to Georgia with “no idea what I would do with the rest of my life.” Four decades after launching The Carter Center, he still talked of unfinished business. “I thought when we got into politics we would have resolved everything,” Carter told the AP in 2021. “But it’s turned out to be much more long-lasting and insidious than I had thought it was. I think in general, the world itself is much more divided than in previous years.” Still, he affirmed what he said when he underwent treatment for a cancer diagnosis in his 10th decade of life. “I’m perfectly at ease with whatever comes,” he said in 2015 . “I’ve had a wonderful life. I’ve had thousands of friends, I’ve had an exciting, adventurous and gratifying existence.”

Trump picks Pam Bondi for next attorney generalThere are several players vying for the 2024 AP NFL MVP Award, including Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen , Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson and Philadelphia Eagles running back Saquon Barkley . One name on the periphery is Jayden Daniels , the standout rookie signal-caller for the Washington Commanders. Steve Spurrier believes Daniels could be in play to win the award, he said on “ Another Dooley Noted Podcast ” following Washington’s 36-33 victory over the Eagles this past Sunday. “Jayden Daniels — he might be the MVP of the league if they wait till everything’s over,” Spurrier said. “He is some player.” Daniels, the No. 2 overall pick and 2023 Heisman Trophy winner, has far exceeded the high expectations put upon him entering the league. Daniels does not have much competition when it comes to the AP Offensive Rookie of the Year Award, throwing for 3,303 yards, 22 touchdowns and eight interceptions 69.7% passing. He is second only to Jackson for rushing yards by a quarterback with 737 yards, to go along with another six scores on the ground. Jayden Daniels putting up big numbers in rookie campaign Spurrier was blown away by his performance against the Eagles, who came into Week 16 riding a 10-game winning streak. Daniels completed 24-of-39 passes for 258 touchdowns and five touchdowns, helping Washington come back from a 13-point deficit entering the fourth quarter. He added 81 rushing yards. Daniels is only the third quarterback to have five or more touchdown passes and 75 or more rushing yards in the same game, joining Jackson (twice in 2019) and Cam Newton , who did it once in 2015, per Eric Edholm of NFL.com . At this point, it’s just another Sunday for Daniels, who continues to earn praise from head coach Dan Quinn. “Today he became a heavy hitter,” Quinn said after the game. “He really did.” This article first appeared on 5 GOATs and was syndicated with permission.Pedestrian hit and killed at 16th Street and Rondel Place near Valencia

Dylan Hernández: MLS deal with Apple TV could be hurting league's efforts to grow its fan baseAt least 50 major retailers have jacked up interest rates on store-branded credit cards to all-time highs — even as inflation continues to dog shoppers nationwide, according to an explosive new study. Big chains including Macy’s, Gap, TJ Maxx and Petco hiked APRs on their store-issued credit cards before the Federal Reserve began slashing rates in September, according to a CNBC report that was based on Bankrate.com data . The retailers are pushing rates to 30% and above — an all-time record that breaks an unspoken APR maximum of 29.99% for the first time in years. That’s despite the fact that economists expect the government’s lending rates to ease further in the coming months. While there are no federal caps on rates, companies are required by law to clearly post and alert customers to changes. Experts are advising shoppers to think twice before signing up for new cards in the thick of the holiday season. “If you get offered one of these this holiday season, really take a breath. I would just say no if you’re going to carry a balance,” Bankrate analyst Ted Rossman said. “We hear many times people sign up for these cards and they don’t even realize what they’re getting into.” Discount retailer Big Lots – which filed for bankruptcy in September – raised its APR by 6 percentage points from 29.99% to 35.99%, the largest increase of the 100 retailers analyzed by Bankrate. Gap made the second-largest increase, raising the rate on its Banana Republic, Athleta and Old Navy cards by 5 percentage points to 34.99%. Petco came in third with a 4.5-percentage-point hike to 35.99%. The moves look like a bid by major retailers to maximize profits as the crucial holiday season ramps up. Nearly half of Macy’s operating profits in 2022 came from its credit card program, according to a 2023 report by Citi analyst Paul Lejuez. In May, Macy’s raised its full-year forecast on credit card revenues “due to better-than-expected profit share resulting from higher balances within the portfolio,” finance chief Adrian Mitchell said on a call. In August, Mitchell said the company’s revenue was being helped by consumers keeping credit card balances for longer than expected. Macy’s upscale Bloomingdale’s chain raised its APR by 2.5 percentage points to 34.49%. TJX, which owns TJ Maxx, Marshalls and Homegoods, hiked its APR by 2.75 percentage points to 34.99%. Big Lots, Academy Sports, Burlington, Michael’s and Petco are tied for the highest APR at a whopping 35.99% as of September, according to the CNBC report. A spokesperson for Big Lots told CNBC that APR changes are made “responsibly and in line with overall industry standards.” Big Lots’ partner bank, Comenity, said the interest rate hikes were “due to several factors including historical federal rate increases, rising credit losses and regulatory pressures.” Some companies, like Macy’s, Nordstrom, and TJX, have brought their rates down to correspond with the Fed’s half-point cut – but their APRs are still between 2 and 2.5 percentage points higher than a year ago. A spokesperson for Nordstrom told CNBC the APR adjustment made sure the rate was “aligned with the current economic environment.” Macy’s, Burlington, TJX Companies, Gap, Petco and Big Lots did not immediately respond to The Post’s requests for comment. Store credit card sign-ups have declined in popularity as younger shoppers enjoy buy now, pay later options like Klarna and Afterpay – so retailers need to earn more from a smaller group of customers, hence the hefty interest rates and staggering late fees. Most credit cards, including store cards, are tied to the central bank’s federal funds rate – so retailers bumped up their rates ahead of the Fed’s highly anticipated cuts. Retailers and their banking partners usually split the revenue when customers pay interest or a late fee on their card. All of the major retailers reviewed by CNBC raised their rates before the Fed’s cuts at times when investors were placing high odds on the central bank lowering interest rates. The APRs on retail credit cards rose 1.52 percentage points on average between September 2023 and September 2024, while traditional credit cards’ rates only rose by 0.08 percentage points, according to Bankrate data. The average APR on a store credit card also grew 2.21 percentage points from November 2022 to September 2023, according to CNBC. Retailers raised their rates an additional 0.71 points compared to the Fed’s 1.5 point increase during the same period.

Jinnah’s role as a global figure: Perspectives from international historians “Jinnah was a historic personality who is born once in a century.” - Mussolini “Few individuals significantly alter the course of history. Fewer still modify the map of the world. Hardly anyone can be credited with creating a nation-state. Mohammad Ali Jinnah did all three.” - Stanley Wolpert, Jinnah of Pakistan. These words by Stanley Wolpert encapsulate the remarkable legacy of Mohammad Ali Jinnah, the founding father of Pakistan. Jinnah’s journey from being a staunch advocate of Hindu-Muslim unity to the lone voice of the Muslims of the subcontinent who led the creation of a new nation, stands as a testament to his unparalleled vision and leadership. In his book Jinnah of Pakistan, Stanley Wolpert explores Jinnah’s role as a global figure. Many other international historians also recognise Jinnah for his determination to form a new state through peaceful negotiations with colonial powers. While historians praise his contributions not only as the founder of Pakistan but also as a global figure, they also highlight his transformation from an ambassador of Hindu-Muslim unity to a nation builder. However, different historians and world leaders have viewed Jinnah’s role, character, and personality as a global leader from varying perspectives. The great leader played a pivotal role in creating Pakistan, and for this remarkable contribution, he is admired by historians, diplomats, and political commentators. “Jinnah was a historic personality who is born once in a century.” - Mussolini Mussolini acknowledged Quaid-i-Azam’s role as a global figure by calling him a once-in-a-century leader, recognising his extraordinary capabilities. During the Pakistan movement, Jinnah proved to be an iconic leader who changed the course of history, profoundly influencing global politics beyond the dynamics of South Asian politics. As a champion of minority rights, Jinnah believed in equality, justice, and constitutional supremacy for every community. He is known for safeguarding the interests of minorities, and his speech delivered on August 11, 1947, clearly defines his vision of a secular state, where everyone enjoys religious freedom. As he said, “You are free! You are free to go to your temples. You are free to go to your mosques or to any other places of worship in this State of Pakistan. You may belong to any religion, caste, or creed-that has nothing to do with the business of the state.” Additionally, Jinnah was the leader of the Muslims in South Asia and had clear-cut differences with the ideologies of his counterparts, Nehru and Gandhi. Despite their contrasting views about the future of post-colonial India, Jinnah’s formidable opponents could not ignore his remarkable intellect, determination, and legal brilliance. Nehru’s words reflect his admiration for Jinnah when he said, “Jinnah is one of the most extraordinary men in history.” It has been noted that their arguments and differences sometimes became contentious due to Jinnah’s unwavering determination for a separate homeland for the Muslims of South Asia. Nevertheless, Nehru openly acknowledged the significant role Jinnah played in shaping the future of India. It was due to his pragmatic and visionary leadership qualities that historians pay high tribute to his attributes. Ayesha Jalal, a distinguished historian, in her book The Sole Spokesman: Jinnah, the Muslim League, and the Demand for Pakistan, describes Jinnah as an advocate for the interests of Muslims in India under colonial rule. She highlights his ability to navigate the complicated politics of the time and his efforts to protect the rights of Muslims in South Asia. Her words portray him as a master strategist, willing to adapt his demands based on the political realities of the time, and he achieved his objective through constitutional means. Similarly, S. M. Burke, a famous Pakistani diplomat, professor, and author, in his book Quaid-i-Azam Mohammad Ali Jinnah: His Personality and His Politics, provides a comprehensive analysis of Jinnah’s personality and political philosophy. He delves into the various aspects of his life, portraying him as a charismatic figure who never compromised his principles and adhered to constitutionalism. He also praised Jinnah’s oratory skills, legal brilliance, and the way he dealt with his counterparts and the colonial government. As he said, “Quaid-i-Azam Mohammad Ali Jinnah was a luminary in three walks of life: he was one of India’s leading legal practitioners, one of India’s leading legislators, and one of India’s leading politicians.” Moreover, Hector Bolitho, Jinnah’s official biographer, in his work Jinnah: Creator of Pakistan, provides a comprehensive account of the life of the great leader. He describes Jinnah as an unwavering and determined leader who, despite his poor health and the hardships of the time, remained firm in his resolve to achieve a separate homeland for the Muslims of South Asia. Another famous historian, Patrick French, in his Liberty or Death: India’s Journey to Independence and Division, views Jinnah as a champion of the rights of Muslims in India and a pragmatic leader who altered the history of India and reshaped the history of the world. Beverley Nicholas, a British author and journalist, in his famous book Verdict On India, referred to him as “the most important man in Asia.” He sees Jinnah as a significant figure in Asia because of his pivotal role in reshaping the history of the people of South Asia and for remaining determined to his values and principles. Quaid-i-Azam was equally praised by both friends and foes, not only as the founder of Pakistan but as a global leader. He holds a distinct position in the annals of history. His style of leadership serves as an excellent approach to achieving desired goals. He established Pakistan on the foundations of justice, equality, and freedom for all. His ideas continue to be praised and debated for the protection of minority rights and nation-building. He was, without a doubt, a great orator, and his speeches had a profound impact on his audience. In the end, it can be inferred that his emphasis on democracy and constitutionalism makes him one of the greatest leaders of the 20th century.

In a new exhibit at the Virginia Holocaust Museum in Richmond, Halina Zimm, a Holocaust survivor and Richmond resident, tells her story like never before. “Dimensions in Testimony“ is a new permanent exhibition that uses AI technology to tell the stories of Holocaust survivors, developed by the USC Shoah Foundation, a nonprofit organization based at the University of Southern California. The USC Shoah Foundation launched in 1994 as a way to record, preserve and share the testimonies of Holocaust survivors. The foundation makes audio-visual interviews with survivors and witnesses of the Holocaust for research and education. Currently, there are only four museums nationwide with “Dimensions in Testimony” exhibits. “This is one of the diamonds in the crown of the city of Richmond, and it will bring many, many visitors throughout the state and from outside of the state to the city to see this amazing exhibit, and learn from the survivors and from people who saw it firsthand. So it’s a great teaching mechanism,” said Samuel Asher, executive director of the Virginia Holocaust Museum. Holocaust survivor and Richmond resident Halina Zimm attends the opening of a new exhibit at the Virginia Holocaust Museum in Richmond, Tuesday, Oct. 29, 2024. The exhibit, "Dimensions in Testimony," uses AI technology to tell the story of Holocaust survivors. “Dimensions in Testimony” allows visitors to hear personal stories from Holocaust survivors, which were prerecorded, then engage in Q&A style conversations with them. In 2023, Zimm was videotaped for 15 hours over five days as she answered thousands of questions about her experiences during the Holocaust. For the project, Zimm revisited her life in Poland before the war, her time spent in Warsaw, how it felt to conceal her Jewish identity, Soviet liberation and how she found her way to the United States. Zimm considers it her obligation to share her story. “When I came into this country, I was 21 years old and I never stopped talking. Because I felt it’s so important, people must know,” Zimm said. “My family was wiped out. They couldn’t speak for themselves, so it was my obligation, my responsibility, speaking and telling people about the Holocaust, because people deny that. I’m so grateful I’m still here, that I can talk to you.” The exhibition is on the museum’s second floor in the new 46-seat Alan and Halina Zimm Theater of Remembrance that was built specifically for “Dimensions in Testimony.” The Virginia Holocaust Museum’s new exhibit, “Dimensions in Testimony,” uses AI technology developed by the Shoah Foundation at the University of Southern California to tell the stories of Holocaust survivors. Outside of the theater, black-and-white photos of Holocaust survivors that started a new life in Richmond hang along the wall. “It’s very important that we can teach even more kids, students and adults about what happened,” Asher said. “As Halina Zimm says, 'Love is important. Hate is not important. But there’s more hate out there, so we have to combat the hate.' And the way we do that is to have people talk to survivors through this mechanism. This mechanism will be here as a permanent exhibit for a long, long time, and we’ll add to it as the years go on.” From left to right, Virginia Holocaust Museum Executive Director Samuel Asher and Halina Zimm, a Holocaust who lives in Richmond, speak at a the opening of the “Dimensions in Testimony” exhibit at the Richmond museum on Tuesday, Oct. 29, 2024. (AP) — Police arrested a 16-year-old student after he allegedly brought a gun to his high school in Kenosha, the second time in less than a month that someone has apparently tried to bring a firearm into one of the southeastern Wisconsin city's schools. Indian Trail High School and Academy's resource officer learned Monday that a photo of the student with a gun had been posted on social media, police said in a statement Wednesday. The student was located, escorted to an office, arrested and taken to the police department. Investigators later determined that the student had hidden a gun in a “sensitive area," making it difficult for officers to locate the weapon initially. Sony is reportedly in the early stages of developing a new PlayStation handheld device which would likely play PS4 and PS5 games natively. The report arrives courtesy of the ever-reliable , which posited a portable console, while years away, was being discussed privately, as a means to expand Sony’s reach into a new market. The PlayStation Portal, a cloud-based streaming handheld, is reportedly being used as a building block for Sony’s future plans. In fact, was told the device was originally meant to function as a standalone gaming handheld, much like the Steam Deck, before plans were changed. Sony is seemingly looking to revisit this intent in a new handheld device, with the aim for this to be “more accessible and appealing to a wider audience.” notes Sony has been aiming to expand PlayStation’s appeal for several years now, as it aims to make its games more widely accessible, beyond the PS5 ecosystem. Should Sony release a new PlayStation handheld device, it will likely be in contention with Microsoft – the company is – as well as Nintendo, which will announce a Nintendo Switch successor within the next six months, and Valve’s Steam Deck PC handheld. The handheld gaming market is heating up In the last few years, the race to create new gaming handhelds that allow a freedom for users has heated up significantly. What’s worth noting is Sony was formerly an expert in the gaming handheld market. The PlayStation Portable (PSP) was a very early experiment with the technology, and proved to be wildly popular in its era, thanks to robust developer support. It’s estimated the console sold around 80 million units in its ten-year life cycle, making it the 12th best-selling console of all time. Sadly, Sony’s followup device, the PlayStation Vita, fared much worse, selling an estimated 10-15 million units in its life cycle. While many factors influenced this lack of popularity, it’s commonly put down to a lack of developer support, with few major titles releasing on the console. Following this release, Sony largely abandoned its handheld gaming ambitions, instead focussing on launching home consoles for the next decade. Now, it appears the ambition and desire for dedicated handheld gaming devices may have returned – and Sony may once again dip its toes into the market. While believes a potential new PlayStation handheld device isn’t a sure thing, and Sony may choose to leave the idea behind should the market prove volatile, we’ll certainly be keeping an eye out for more updates.

Thanksgiving Day falling so late this year has altered traditional travel patterns. At airports, the Transportation Security Administration says it could screen a record number of U.S. air travelers on Sunday. Meanwhile, the head of the Federal Aviation Administration says a shortage of air traffic controllers could cause flight delays. Transportation analytics company INRIX says roads could be congested on Monday with both commuters and returning holiday travelers. (AP) — California could offer state tax rebates for electric vehicle purchases if the incoming Trump administration eliminates the $7,500 federal EV tax credit. Gov. Gavin Newsom says Monday he'll propose creating a new version of the state’s successful Clean Vehicle Rebate Program, which was phased out in 2023 after funding nearly 600,000 new cars and trucks. Officials didn’t say how much the program would cost or how the rebates would work. Newsom’s proposal is part of his plan to protect California’s progressive policies ahead of Republican President-elect Donald Trump’s second term. Stock market today: Dow hits another record as stocks rise NEW YORK (AP) — U.S. stocks rose, with those benefiting the most from lower interest rates and a stronger economy leading the way. The S&P 500 climbed 0.3% Monday to pull closer to its record set two weeks ago. Workers at Charlotte airport, an American Airlines hub, go on strike during Thanksgiving travel week CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — American Airlines says it doesn’t expect significant disruptions to flights this week as a result of a labor strike at its hub in Charlotte, North Carolina. Service workers there walked out Monday during a busy week of Thanksgiving travel to protest what they say are unlivable wages. Employees of ABM and Prospect Airport Services authorized the work stoppage. Union spokesperson Sean Keady says the strike is expected to last 24 hours. The companies contract with American Airlines to provide services such as cleaning airplane interiors, removing trash and escorting passengers in wheelchairs. The companies have acknowledged the seriousness of a strike during the holiday travel season. At the crossroads of news and opinion, 'Morning Joe' hosts grapple with aftermath of Trump meeting The reaction of those who defended “Morning Joe” hosts Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski for meeting with President-elect Trump sounds almost quaint in the days of opinionated journalism. Doesn't it makes sense, they said, for hosts of a political news show to meet with such an important figure? But given how “Morning Joe” has attacked Trump, its viewers felt insulted. Many reacted quickly by staying away. It all reflects the broader trend of opinion crowding out traditional journalist in today's marketplace, and the expectations that creates among consumers. By mid-week, the show's audience was less than two-thirds what it has typically been this year. Eggs are available -- but pricier -- as the holiday baking season begins Egg prices are on the rise again as a lingering outbreak of bird flu coincides with high demand during the holiday baking season. The average price for a dozen eggs in U.S. cities was $3.37 in October, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. That was up 63% from October 2023, when a dozen eggs cost an average of $2.07. Avian influenza is the main culprit. The current bird flu outbreak that began in February 2022 has led to the slaughter of more than 111 million birds, mostly egg-laying chickens. But the American Egg Board says egg shortages at grocery stores have been isolated and temporary so far. Detroit's iconic Renaissance Center could see 2 towers razed in $1.6B redevelopment plan DETROIT (AP) — Two towers at Detroit’s iconic Renaissance Center would be razed and the complex converted to a mix of housing and offices under an ambitious $1.6 billion plan announced on Monday. GM will move its headquarters out of the complex next year. The towers are a symbol of Detroit, with aerial views often shown on television sports broadcasts. GM announced that it would join forces with the Bedrock real estate development firm and Wayne County to turn the partially vacant property into a roughly 27-acre entertainment complex across the Detroit River from Windsor, Ontario. Bedrock would invest at least $1 billion, with roughly $250 million more coming from GM and another $250 million in public money, possibly from the state of Michigan.

Some aggrieved members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Kogi State have accused the party leadership of perpetuating illegality by allegedly imposing Enemona Anyebe, a member disqualified by the court from contesting the chairmanship position during the party’s delegate election held in August this year. Speaking on behalf of the group at a press conference in Lokoja on Saturday, Muhammad Sani Gambo, who was the runner-up in the said Kogi State PDP Congress, stated that the group seeks justice, equity, and fairness. Gambo said, “This press conference has become very necessary towards salvaging our party from imminent collapse and the landmines of illegality and impunity that the purported chairmanship of Hon. Enemona Anyebe is about to cause the PDP. “Let me quickly state that his purporting to be the Chairman of Kogi PDP is not only criminal, but it has also made the PDP a laughing stock among the comity of civilised people in Nigeria. “This must not be allowed to happen because the imminent breakdown of law and order may also be inherent if he is allowed to continue to assume what he is not. “The crude manner jointly masterminded by Hon. Enemona Anyebe and his sponsors to take over, through military style, the leadership of PDP in Kogi State leaves much to be desired. “This is even more worrisome as Kogites, Nigerians, and the world look up to the PDP at this moment to salvage Nigeria from the precipice of outright destruction. Unfortunately, it is surprising that these haters of democracy are trying to undermine the will of the PDP members in Kogi State.” Gambo stressed the importance of fairness, justice, and equity in the conduct and activities of the PDP, particularly as an opposition political party. He stated, *”We are a country and people guided by the rule of law, and the time to call a spade a spade, no matter whose ox is gored, is now in Kogi State.” He recalled that the last PDP State Congress in Kogi was free and fair, with the outcome accepted by all contestants except for the position of State Chairman. A court order had barred Anyebe from contesting or presenting himself for screening. Gambo added that the party had been directed not to screen Anyebe, as the court ruling was yet to be vacated before the Congress, and it remains so to date. Gambo noted that Anyebe, who was previously suspended by the party’s local government executives in 2019, affirmed by the state executives, and again by his ward executives in 2024 for anti-party activities, now presides over the affairs of the party in the state. He questioned how Anyebe could have become the state’s party chairman when his nomination form was withdrawn by court order under Suit No. HC/OKP/54M/2024 of the Kogi State High Court. He added, “We are also aware that Hon. Enemona approached a Kogi State High Court with prayers to vacate the court order via Motion Nos. HCL/372M/2024 and HCL/379M/2024 respectively, but his appeals were dismissed.” When contacted, Enemona Anyebe, the accused person, promised to respond to the correspondent but stated that he was currently in transit.KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 3 — When Jeffrey Chou moved into his new home in Damansara, he anticipated high electricity bills due to his fish pond and nine air conditioners. His concerns grew when a two-week family vacation resulted in a bill still running into the hundreds. This prompted him to explore solar power as an alternative. At the time, Chou’s electricity bills for his two-storey terrace house averaged between RM900 and RM1,100 per month. “Having tracked (electricity bills) consistently at RM1,000 or more per month and wondering why the bill was still so high (while away from home) during the vacation, it was time to look into investing in solar power as a long-term investment,” he said when contacted. About a month ago, he installed 27 solar panels and the accompanying system for RM34,000, significantly lowering his expenses. Although Chou is ineligible for rebates under the NEM 3.0 (Net Energy Metering) scheme, which has reached its quota, he still saves on electricity. “We’re not eligible for any kickbacks as the government’s NEM 3.0 (Net Energy Metering) quota is full, but we’re still saving on electricity as the bill is now around RM650-RM700 per month. “Once the quota is open and we get a slot, then we can look into getting returns on our investment,” he said when contacted. “The alternative was to keep spending money (paying electricity bills as usual), knowing it’ll increase in the future, so this was a good financial decision.” Another homeowner, Muhammad Hazwan Yunus from Keramat, faced similar issues with monthly electricity bills of RM650 to RM700 and rising. He, too, had nine air conditioners at home and his situation was compounded by frequent family gatherings that spiked electricity usage, especially during weekends. Hazwan turned to solar financing and found companies which offers system installation with no upfront costs. Initially sceptical, he researched the concept and found it viable. “You rent the system with a meter installed, and the company charges you accordingly,” he said. “I took this substitution plan from Sols Energy and they installed the system, but now I have two bills. One to Sols, who charge 46 cents per kWh (Kilowatt-hours), and the other to TNB. “Now the TNB bill is around RM60 and the Sols bill is around RM420. I still save,” he told Malay Mail . According to TNB’s bill calculator, homeowners consuming between 2,000 and 2,300 kWh monthly — leading to bills of RM1,000 to RM1,200 — would see their costs rise to RM1,300 to RM1,500 after adding the 8 per cent service tax. To understand how many kWh you’re using, click this link to TNB’s bill calculator . As of January 1, 2024, electricity prices in Malaysia are as follows: According to solar panel installers Malay Mail spoke to, for residential solar systems, the maximum capacity is 17 kWh, which can save households between RM950 and RM1,000 per month. A typical solar panel generates 400 to 500 watts, so a 22-panel system produces about 11 kWh. The cheapest installations cater to homes with RM200 to RM250 monthly bills, while the priciest systems target households with bills exceeding RM1,500. Meanwhile, prices for solar installations have dropped by 20 per cent. A vendor highlighted that the price of a 22-panel solar system has dropped from RM43,000 last year to RM36,000, thanks to improved panel quality and increased imports from China, which have contributed to these cost reductions. Abdul Wahid Ibrahim, an IT manager in Johor, installed a solar system in June to manage bills that exceeded RM1,000, especially during school holidays when his kids were around. He viewed solar power as a strategic investment for long-term financial stability. “The setup includes 23 solar panels, generating 12.65 kWp for a three-phase power supply. I have 23 panels and my TNB bill is RM20-40 now and the entire thing cost around RM23,000. “I pay RM560 monthly (for the solar panels) through a credit card instalment plan and RM20 to RM40 to TNB. This is about RM600 monthly compared to RM800 to RM1,000 previously,” he said. Abdul Wahid expects to break even in under five years. “At the moment, NEM 3.0 is a ten-year term, but once I’ve cleared this credit card payment, I will pay only RM40 per month,” he said. Abdul Wahid said he preferred to pay for the system outright as he could break even faster than taking a seven- to 10-year plan with a company. “Since I installed mine, I’ve noticed three or four other households in my area doing the same. “Panel prices are generally lower now compared to a year ago, but there might still be some variation. Back then, solar panels was much more expensive,” he said. “If you calculate properly, it’s manageable, and you can break even. Some people think it’s expensive, but with payment schedules — say, using a credit card stretched to 50 months — it becomes much cheaper. “Unfortunately, many vendors only partner with banks for shorter terms, like 12 to 36 months. If they offered financing for 48 to 60 months, it would be much easier for most people,” he added. Malaysian Photovoltaic Industry Association (MPIA) president Davis Chong observed a significant uptick in installations, with major urban centres like the Klang Valley, Johor and Penang leading the charge, with growing interest in states such as Kedah, Melaka, Perak and Negeri Sembilan. Chong said homeowners can expect to see returns on investment within five to eight years, with some achieving payback even sooner. “Over a 25-year period (the typical warranty period for solar panels), homeowners can save significantly on their electricity bills. “For example, a system that costs RM45,000 to install could save an estimated RM90,000 over 25 years,” he told Malay Mail . Davis also said financing options have expanded, with solar loans and innovative business models making installations more affordable. Programmes like NEM and the SolaRIS rebate offer financial incentives, further encouraging adoption. Technological advancements, including Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), is also making a difference, allowing homeowners to store excess energy for later use. Some new housing developments are also pre-installing solar systems, easing adoption for buyers. “On top of that, I think P2P (peer-to-peer) energy trading is a really interesting development. This allows homeowners to sell their extra solar energy to others, creating a new way to earn money from their systems. “It’s a win-win because it makes solar (energy) more financially attractive and could encourage more developers to invest in residential solar (systems),” Chong added. Sols Energy spokesperson and teacher Raj Ridvan Singh said urban and suburban areas, especially in states like Selangor, Negeri Sembilan and Pahang, are experiencing significant growth in solar adoption. He added that government incentives, such as the SolaRIS RM4,000 rebate, have significantly reduced installation costs, making solar more accessible for homeowners. The NEM scheme, introduced by the Malaysian government, reduces reliance on TNB by allowing households to supply excess solar energy back to the grid in exchange for credits. When solar energy is insufficient or during the night when sunlight is unavailable, TNB will supply the energy to meet the household's needs. According to the Sustainable Energy Development Authority (Seda), the current NEM rakyat quota balance is 44.7 MWac, though applications is around ten times that at 405.3 MWac. For more information on NEM quotas, visit Seda’s website .Published 5:03 pm Saturday, December 28, 2024 By Data Skrive Saturday’s Sun Belt schedule includes the Marshall Thundering Herd (7-6, 0-1 Sun Belt) versus the Georgia Southern Eagles (7-6, 0-1 Sun Belt), at 4:00 PM ET on ESPN+. Illawarra basketball stalwart Bob Cannon takes great delight in being the oldest registered player in NSW. Subscribe now for unlimited access . Login or signup to continue reading The 82-year-old has no plans to slow down. Cannon is playing the game he loves more now than in years. Last month, Cannon enjoyed a successful campaign at the 2024 Pan Pacific Masters Games. He was part of the Myths and Legends team, which won a gold medal in the 80+ years and a silver in the 75+ age group in basketball. Cannon played 10 games during the Pan Pacific Games from November 3 to 10. "It was a tough schedule, but I loved every minute," he said. "I'm at my happiest when I'm playing basketball." Despite usually being one of the oldest players on the team, Cannon is one of the fittest and is often seen after a game doing a few line sprints to keep his fitness up, putting his much younger teammates to shame. Cannon, who was born in West Sydney but has lived in the Illawarra for the past twenty-plus years, started his basketball Masters' campaign in Bankstown in 1994. Over the years, he has had some speed humps, most notably a knee replacement and, more recently, a shoulder replacement. Cannon is now fighting fit. His current weekly routine involves veterans basketball on Sunday and Wednesday, Walking basketball on Wednesday and social men's basketball on Thursday. The latter has no age restriction, meaning Cannon can and often does play against players as young as 18. Last year, Cannon and his Illawarra Walking Basketball team won the state title in Hills District. The achievement came 10 years after Cannon first played in an Australian Masters' basketball tournament in 2013. That same year, he coached Australian women for 60+ years to a gold medal at the World Masters in Italy. Taoiseach Simon Harris has confirmed he has spoken to the Dublin woman who won a civil case against mixed martial arts fighter Conor McGregor to praise her courage. Mr Harris said he also wanted to tell Nikita Hand, a hair colourist from Drimnagh, that her case had prompted an increase in women coming forward to ask for support. Ms Hand, who accused the sportsman of raping her in a Dublin hotel in December 2018, won her claim against him for damages in a civil case at the High Court in the Irish capital on Friday. The total amount of damages awarded to Ms Hand by the jury was €248,603.60. Mr McGregor said in a post on social media on Friday that he intends to appeal against the decision. That post has since been deleted. Speaking to the media on Saturday, Mr Harris said he told Ms Hand of the support she has from people across Ireland. "I spoke with Nikita today and I wanted to thank her for her incredible bravery and her courage," he said. "I wanted to make sure that she knew how much solidarity and support there was across this country for her bravery. "I also wanted to make sure she knew of what the Dublin Rape Crisis Centre had said yesterday - that so many other women have now come forward in relation to their own experiences of sexual abuse as a result of Nikita's bravery." Earlier Justice Minister Helen McEntee also commended Nikita for her “bravery and determination” after winning a civil case against Irish mixed martial arts fighter Conor McGregor. Mr McGregor said in a post on social media on Friday that he intends to appeal the decision. That post has since been deleted. Justice Minister Helen McEntee praised Ms Hand’s bravery and said she had shown “there is light at the end of the tunnel”. “I just want to commend Nikita for her bravery, for her determination and the leadership that she has shown in what has been – I’ve no doubt – a very, very difficult time for her and indeed, for her family. She added: “Because of wonderful people like Nikita, I hope that it shows that there is light at the end of the tunnel, that there are supports available to people, and that there is justice at the end of the day.” Ms Hand said in a statement outside court on Friday that she hoped her case would remind victims of assault to keep “pushing forward for justice”. Describing the past six years as “a nightmare”, she said: “I want to show (my daughter) Freya and every other girl and boy that you can stand up for yourself if something happens to you, no matter who the person is, and justice will be served.” During the case, Ms Hand said she was “disappointed and upset” when the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) decided not to prosecute the case after she made a complaint to the Irish police. In a letter to her in August 2020, the DPP said there was “insufficient evidence” and there was not a reasonable prospect of conviction. Ms Hand asked the DPP to review the decision, saying she felt she was being treated differently because one of the suspects was famous. Asked about the DPP’s decision not to prosecute, Ms McEntee said: “We have a very independent system in this country, and I think that’s right. “Our DPP, she’s independent in the decisions that are taken, and for good reasons that there should never be any political interference in that process. “There is always an option for an individual to ask for reasons to be outlined as to why the DPP made a particular decision, and that is open to any individual or any case, but I have, since becoming minister, given priority to and enabled a new office within the DPP to open specifically focused on sexual offences, so that this issue can be given the focus and the priority that it needs. “But... it is independent, and I really think it’s important that we respect that independence.” Also speaking about the case, Mr Martin commended Ms Hand for her “extraordinary courage and bravery”, while stressing the importance of instilling core values in young people “and young men in particular.” “Consent and respect are very very basic values that must be there from the very beginning in life and through the SPHE programme through relationships and sexualities programmes in schools this has to be consistently worked on. “Consent its critical here and for Nikita Hand to do what she did I think is quiet extraordinary.” He said: “It was a harrowing case and I think the people across the country were shocked by it and very very upset. I think the entire country are rooting for Nikita Hand this morning.” Asked if he was critical of the DPP, Mr Martin said: “I don’t have the full background that the DPP had in respect of this but the bottom line is: there is a higher degree of challenge in a criminal court than there is in a civil case.” He added that “there are issues that we will evaluate coming out of this.” Mr Martin also stressed the need to ensure the Irish justice system is much more “victim-centric than it currently is or indeed has been in the past.”Sins of a democracy

NORMAL, Ill. (AP) — Wenkers Wright ran for 118 yards and two touchdowns and No. 13 Illinois State knocked off North Dakota for the first time, 35-13 in the regular season finale for both teams Saturday. The Redbirds are 9-2 (6-2 Missouri Valley Conference) and are looking to reach the FCS playoffs for the first time since 2019 and sixth time in Brock Spack's 16 seasons as head coach. Illinois State opened the game with some trickery. Eddie Kasper pulled up on a fleaflicker and launched a 30-yard touchdown pass to Xavier Loyd to cap a seven-play, 70-yard opening drive. Simon Romfo tied it on North Dakota's only touchdown of the day, throwing 20 yards to Nate DeMontagnac. Wright scored from the 10 to make it 14-7 after a quarter, and after C.J. Elrichs kicked a 20-yard field goal midway through the second to make it 14-10 at intermission, Wright powered in from the 18 and Mitch Bartol caught a five-yard touchdown pass from Tommy Rittenhouse to make it 28-10 after three. Seth Glatz added a 13-yard touchdown run to make it 35-10 before Elrichs added a 37-yard field goal to get the Fighting Hawks on the board to set the final margin. Rittenhouse finished 21 of 33 passing for 187 yards for Illinois State. Loyd caught eight passes for 121 yards. Romfo completed 11 of 26 passes for 135 yards and a touchdown with an interception for North Dakota (5-7, 2-6). Illinois State faced North Dakota for just the fourth time and third time as Missouri Valley Conference opponents. The Redbirds lost the previous three meetings. The IT industry has regained momentum in the second half of 2024 and is gearing up for a promising 2025 on multiple fronts, said NLB Services. In the coming year, fresher hiring in the Indian IT sector is poised for significant growth, with an anticipated increase of 15-20% in job opportunities across various industries, the company added. At the same time, the demand for highly specialised tech roles, including artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML), data analytics, and cloud technologies, is expected to surge by 30-35%, driven by the increasing reliance on emerging technologies, it said. This surge in demand is not limited to hiring but extends to a strategic focus on tech upskilling, with companies investing heavily in training initiatives to equip their workforce with the necessary skills to meet the evolving technological landscape, the company noted. NLB Services' analysis is based on its view of the macro ecosystem, industry trends, and demand. Further, the company stated that campus hiring remains a core focus for larger companies that are looking to hire aggressively in the second half of 2024-25. Since the global economic slowdown of 2021-22, clients have curtailed discretionary spending due to on-demand hiring patterns and global macroeconomic challenges. This has impacted the project pipeline; however, it is expected to stabilize in 2025, offering fresh hopes for job seekers, it said. IT fresher hiring in 2025 is projected to increase, with high demand for roles in artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML), data analytics, Python, cloud technologies, and cybersecurity. Sectors such as Global Capability Centres (GCCs), manufacturing, BFSI, healthcare, and retail are also anticipated to boost their IT fresher intake by 30-35% in 2025, it added. The Pittsburgh Steelers will be hoping for a much better schedule in 2025. They had an absolute gauntlet in the back half of their 2024 season, and they did not respond well to it in the slightest in the end. They dropped all three games in an 11-day stretch, with each of them being double-digit losses. Despite that, they will have one obstacle to overcome in 2025 no matter what: jet lag. For the first time since 2013, the Steelers will most likely be playing an NFL game in Europe. There have been all kinds of rumors about the Steelers playing in Ireland, as the NFL continues to try and expand its brand across the globe. The league has recently had games in Brazil and Germany, as well as England. Gerry Dulac of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported that the league will have a game in Ireland sooner rather than later, and it will be hosted by no other than the Steelers. "The Steelers are expecting to play a regular season game in Ireland in 2025, their first international game in 12 years, according to team sources. Because the Steelers have nine home games in 2025, it is likely one of those games will be in Ireland." It has already been confirmed that the NFL would go to Ireland at some point time, but Dulac's sources claim that it will happen in 2025, as opposed to a few years down the line. It only makes sense that the Steelers host that game, since no singular team is more closely associated with a country than Pittsburgh with Ireland: not even the Jacksonville Jaguars with England, even though they play there every year. As Dulac also mentioned, it will most likely be a home game for the Steelers. It sucks for Steeler Nation, since it will miss out on a game at Acrisure Stadium, but it only makes sense to have that be the case. The Steelers' opponent is not confirmed yet, but that report may come out in the next couple of weeks. Dulac also mentioned that the teams playing international games in 2024 were announced in the middle of January. If the NFL does the same thing, Steeler Nation will know for sure if this even is truly happening quickly. "The NFL could make the announcement in the next couple weeks. This year, they announced the teams who would play international games — Chicago, Jacksonville, Minnesota and Carolina — on Jan. 11, 2024. The opponent and date would not be announced until the 2025 NFL schedule is released in the spring." Of course, the main part of this partnership was from legendary owner Dan Rooney , who the Irish ambassador for President Barack Obama. He held that title from July 2009 to December 2012. Since then, the Steelers have been very active in the nation, which includes hosting kicker camps to give the locals a chance to play in the NFL. Steelers Will Always Have A Strong Relationship With Ireland Thanks To Rooney When Rooney unfortunately passed away, the Steelers honored him by wearing a patch that contained his initials in a clover, which symbolizes the nation of Ireland. Thanks to his efforts with the Steelers and with the United States, the team and the foreign country will forever be intertwined together. Every time there's talk about finding new countries to play in, the Steelers playing in Dublin is brought up as an option. Now, it seems like the NFL has finally decided to go through with that plan. The official decision should be announced sometime soon, and the date of the game and the Steelers' opponent will be announced whenever the NFL decides to release the schedule. Get ready, Dublin. Make way for Steeler Nation. This article first appeared on SteelerNation.com and was syndicated with permission.

Walmart Inc WMT.N, Amazon.com AMZN.O and fast-growing e-commerce sites Shein and PDD Holding's PDD.O Temu saw record-breaking sales on Black Friday and Cyber Monday, according to spending data, suggesting that they may finish the holiday season on a much stronger note than Target TGT.N and Best Buy BBY.N, which struggled. Holiday shoppers largely browsed at brick-and-mortar stores, making more online purchases at some retailers, snapping up such items as pre-owned Rolex watches, Pokemon cards and singer Sabrina Carpenter's perfumes at Walmart, and Fire TV streaming devices and Shark vacuums at Amazon during the deal-heavy week, which at Amazon began on Nov. 21, according to company statements. Americans spent roughly $10.8 billion online on Black Friday this year, up 10.2% from the previous year, then followed that up by spending $13.3 billion on Cyber Monday, 7.3% more compared to Cyber Monday in 2023, according to Adobe. Among major retailers, Amazon saw the strongest growth on Black Friday, with sales rising 6% compared to Black Friday a year earlier, according to data firm Facteus, which tracks online and in-store spending in the United States analyzing data from banks, credit unions, payment processors and fintech companies. Its figures are not inflation-adjusted. Rival Walmart saw 3% more spending compared to the year-earlier period, while big-box chain Target and consumer electronics chain Best Buy saw declines versus a year earlier, Facteus said. Earn rewards on your spending: Best credit cards for shopping Among top performers on Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving, were low-cost China rivals Temu and Shein, clocking double-digit percentage growth sales, albeit from a lower sales base, Facteus said. Similarly, on Cyber Monday, the Monday following Thanksgiving, Amazon, Walmart, Temu and privately held Shein saw an increase in sales compared to Cyber Monday 2023, while Best Buy's declined versus a year earlier. Target saw a modest increase. Walmart earnings: Retailer projects fruitful holiday shopping season, stock jumps again At Target, the muted sales performance came despite exclusive merchandise partnerships with singer Taylor Swift and the Broadway show turned Hollywood movie, "Wicked," which were expected to give it a boost. According to research firm Circana, Target's exclusively available Taylor Swift "Eras Tour Book" sold 814,000 print units in just two days of launch, making it the second-highest adult non-fiction release behind Barack Obama's "A Promised Land." At Best Buy, which has struggled due to shoppers pulling back on items like TVs and laptops, sales were 2% lower on Black Friday and 4% lower on Cyber Monday compared to the year-ago periods. Still, its shares are up 2% since Thanksgiving on Nov. 28, suggesting that investors expect a better performance ahead. During the same seven-day period Walmart and Amazon's shares have risen between 3% and 7%, while Target's and PDD's have stayed flat. Walmart offered four times as many deals between Black Friday and Cyber Monday on its Walmart.com marketplace, resulting in its highest single sales day ever between Nov. 25 and Dec. 2, the company said in a blog post. Holiday shopping: Walmart is seeing growth in higher income shoppers, retailer says While the retailer did not specify which day was its sales peak, it said top products included pre-owned Rolex watches, refurbished Dyson vacuums, Pokemon cards, vintage LEGO items, and beauty products from T3, BabylissPRO, Paul Mitchell and Victoria's Secret. Singer Sabrina Carpenter's Sweet Tooth was the most coveted fragrance, it said. Amazon said that the 12-day shopping period ending on Cyber Monday resulted in record sales compared to the same period in prior years, which Facteus confirmed. Top sellers included Medicube devices, FireTV sticks, Samsung TVs, Barbie, Play-Doh, Shark vacuums and air purifiers. Shoppers bought a record number of items, generating its highest-ever sales during a 12-day period. Temu generated $53.3 million in sales on Black Friday and $55.1 million on Cyber Monday, which were both records, Facteus said. Temu told Reuters in an email that toys, especially kids' instruments and cameras, were popular. Similarly, Shein, also hit new highs, with sales of $34.2 million on Black Friday and $38.9 million on Cyber Monday, the data firm said. Corona Schools link pupils’ close performance to equity of teaching, learningGreen technologies and sustainability-focused project strategies are helping the industry address risks earlier and build longer-lasting community ties, a London industry event heard this week. Better technologies, integrating artisanal miners and out-of-the-box mine closure strategies are key to improving mining’s social and environmental impact, a panel heard at The Northern Miner’s International Metals Symposium on Dec. 1-2. Panelists agreed that mining companies ignoring sustainability risk losing social and political support. The panelists shared how their diverse approaches could bolster projects’ sustainability credentials. Brent Johnson, vice-president of environment at Dundee Sustainable Technologies (CSE: DST), called his company’s non-cyanide gold extraction process, CLEVR, a breakthrough for safety. “If cyanide were banned overnight, 80% to 90% of mines would face immediate disruption,” Johnson told the panel. Johnson stressed that new alternatives, like his company’s tech, mitigate risks. They also reduce long-term liabilities, especially in tailings management. “Our approach eliminates the need for massive tailings dams, transforming how mines manage waste,” he said. Technological push Process innovation is one answer. But, Thomas Mumford, vice-president for exploration at Scottie Resources (TSXV: SCOT), noted that electrification and automation entail another. They are more sustainable and efficient. But new technologies face hurdles due to high capital costs and slow industry uptake. “New technologies require rigorous testing, often by large companies with the resources to run pilot projects,” he said. “This slows adoption.” Mumford cited the Borden mine in Ontario, operated by Newmont (NYSE: NEM, TSX: NGT, ASX: NEM), as Canada’s first all-electric underground mine. He noted that, while it shows electrification is viable, such mines are rare. The industry is slow to adopt new technologies due to high costs and risks. Informal integration The discussion also explored challenges from artisanal mining. It accounts for 85% of gold production in places like Colombia. In 2012 and 2013, Aris Mining (TSX: ARIS; NYSE-A: ARMN) began to formalize artisanal miners at its Segovia operations in the country as a way to seal local buy-in for the project, senior vice-president for corporate affairs and sustainability Giovanna Romero said. The company integrated them as contract mining partners. This collaboration has led to 44% of the company’s gold production today coming from these partnerships. Romero described them as an important step in reducing environmental harm and fostering community trust. “By integrating artisanal miners into our supply chain and sharing geological and technical knowledge, we’ve transformed them into legal, productive partners,” she said. Innovative mine closure strategies also took centre stage. Romero described Aris’s reclamation project at Segovia that converted a tailings site into a community park featuring football fields and recreational domes. A second stage includes a photovoltaic plant, further extending the site’s utility. “This project, managed by the local municipality, illustrates how closures can benefit communities long after mining operations end,” she said. Technically savvy The panel stressed that sustainability is a must, not just a goal. It’s vital for both ethics and business. Mumford called for early planning to ensure mine sites can be reused productively after closure. “Reclaimed mines shouldn’t sit as wastelands. They need to contribute to the community in a meaningful way,” he said. Johnson emphasized that companies need to factor sustainability into financial risk management. He cited the 2015 Vale (NYSE: VALE) dam collapse in Brazil, which killed 19 people, polluted the Doce River all the way to the Atlantic and saddled the company with $29.9 billion in damages. “Spending extra money upfront on sustainable technologies isn’t just ethical — it’s a no-brainer when you consider the long-term savings on liabilities and the avoidance of catastrophic failures,” he said. Meanwhile, mining communities are becoming more “technically savvy” and demanding better practices. “A mine could win awards one year and face ruin the next over ESG failures,” Johnson said.

The White House is listening to demands for President Joe Biden to extend the same grace to thousands of people wronged by the U.S. judicial system as he did to his son Hunter, officials say. Since Biden's pardon of Hunter on Sunday, a growing chorus of civil rights activists and lawmakers have called for broader clemency for other people they believe were unfairly convicted or sentenced. Defense attorneys and civil rights groups are ramping up efforts to highlight compelling cases, working in conjunction with state legislators to draft letters to the White House and launching digital campaigns urging action to commute sentences or issue pardons for Americans they believe are wrongly convicted or serving excessive terms for nonviolent offenses. The White House is discussing the idea of broader pardons after Hunter, including those convicted of nonviolent drug offenses and people civil rights groups have identified as unjustly incarcerated, sources say. A senior administration official said there will be a number of pardons for people who have served long sentences and are nonviolent. "There’s going to be more to speak to in the upcoming weeks,” White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said on Friday, when asked about the demands and the disparity of Black men often face in the U.S. justice system. She noted the president’s pardon of marijuana convictions and other commutations in the past. “He’s taking this very seriously,” she said. A year ago, Biden pardoned thousands of people with federal marijuana charges. In June, he started a process to pardon all U.S. veterans convicted by the military for gay sex, which was illegal until 2013. Marc Morial, president of the National Urban League, told Reuters, "there are multiple conversations taking place" among a coalition of organizations to push Biden for clemency before he leaves office on Jan. 20. 'Working-class Americans' The top Democrat in the U.S. House of Representatives, Hakeem Jeffries, on Tuesday called on Biden to pardon some "working-class Americans." The Congressional Black Caucus has worked with the NAACP and is in favor of clemency, particularly because of the disparate incarceration rate of African Americans. "The Congressional Black Caucus has worked on legislation from the First Step Act to the executive orders dealing with federal offenses dealing with marijuana. These are areas that we believe should be high priority for the president to consider," Democratic House member Steven Horsford told a press briefing. Biden signed an unconditional pardon for his son on Sunday and said he believed Hunter had been selectively prosecuted and targeted unfairly by the president's political opponents. Hunter Biden , 54, was prosecuted for tax offenses and charges related to possession of a firearm. Civil rights attorney Jarrett Adams said Biden’s pardon is another example of “politics robbing the judicial process of justice.” Adams has been advocating for the release of two Black men, Ferrone Claiborne and Terence Richardson. They were sentenced to life in prison in Virginia for the murder of a police officer, despite a jury finding them guilty only of selling crack but not of the killing. The sentence was based on a 1996 U.S. Supreme Court ruling that allows judges to consider actions for which a defendant was found not guilty when determining their sentence for other charges. The two men initially pleaded guilty to murder, which Adams said was due to advice from their attorneys at the time, as they were facing the death penalty. Adams, who is their attorney, is working with state legislators in Virginia to pressure the White House for the expedited release of the two men. "I'm the last beacon of hope that they have -- so I'm a part of their pain and struggle," said Adams, who himself was wrongfully convicted at 17 years old and sentenced to 28 years in prison. "We're begging that President Biden provides (these families) some relief they deserve." Black and Hispanic Americans disproportionately receive harsher sentences for minor and nonviolent offenses compared to their white counterparts, studies have found. Experts say systemic biases in policing, prosecutorial discretion, and sentencing guidelines contribute to these disparities, perpetuating cycles of inequality. Some Republicans believe that any announcement by Biden of blanket pardons would undermine the criminal justice system and could further tarnish his reputation after pardoning his son. "There shouldn't be a Roman emperor who goes, thumbs up, thumbs down," said Republican consultant Jon Fleischman. "These people have been through the criminal justice system and they should abide by the outcome of that system." Democratic U.S. House member Ayanna Pressley is pushing for Biden to act soon, instead of waiting until the last days of his administration. “Who knows what barriers or hurdles, procedurally that he could be met with," if he waits until January, she said. Historically, presidents often wait until the end of their terms to issue clemency, leaving open the possibility that Biden could take significant action later. Brian Kalt, a law professor who specializes in presidential pardons, said the use of pardon power has diminished in modern history due to political polarization. "Anything that he does is going to be opposed by half the country," Kalt said. "But if he does something that offends his own side, that's what really can make a difference to his legacy." — Reuters

Panthers rookie tight end Ja'Tavion Sanders released from hospital after suffering neck injuryIron ore futures prices slid and headedfor a weekly loss on Friday, as the wave of restocking for seaborne cargoes from steelmakers in top consumer China receded and high portside stocks as well as falling steel margins weighed. The most-traded January iron ore contract on China’s Dalian Commodity Exchange (DCE) ended daytime trading 0.93%lower at 797.5 yuan ($109.90) a metric ton, representing a weekly fall of 0.5%. The benchmark January iron ore on the Singapore Exchange was 0.29% lower at $103.7 a ton, as of 0831 GMT, a decline of 0.9%so far this week. Average daily hot metal output slid for a third straight week by 0.5% week-on-week to 2.33 million tons in the week of Dec. 6, 1.4% higher than the same period in 2023, data from consultancy Mysteel showed. The market is now closely monitoring China’s Central Economic Work Conference to be held this month, on a yet-to-be-announced date, with top leaders setting economic growth targets and planning next year’s agenda. However, expectations for more fiscal stimulus to be unveiled at the meeting diminished after state media said a pace of less than 5% for the economy was acceptable and there was no need for the “worship of speed”. “That has been interpreted by the market as a signal that the likelihood of aggressive stimulus anytime soon is low,” said Pei Hao, analyst at international brokerage Freight Investor Services. “And concerns over iron ore and steel demand outlook next year mounted as a result, weighing down prices.” Investors and traders had expected Beijing to unveil more stimulus to spur its sputtering economy. Other steelmaking ingredients on the DCE lost ground, with coking coal and coke down 1.68% and 1.2%, respectively. Most steel benchmarks on the Shanghai Futures Exchange retreated. Rebar shed 1.36%, hot-rolled coil declined 0.97%, stainless steel SHSScv1 lost 0.58%, while wire rod SWRcv1 added 0.14%.
