Following Barnier’s ouster, 200,000 people marched through France, according to the CGT, the country’s major federation of trade unions. This speaks to another key element of the political situation in France: the power of class struggle which began to emerge with the Yellow Vests movement and developed into a “ pre-revolutionary ” uprising in 2023 in response to Macron’s attacks on pensions. While the movement against the pension reform was defeated, in large part due to the pacifying role played by the union bureaucracies, the recent mobilization of workers shows that class struggle has not been resolved by the various electoral shifts in France this year. In the face of the deepening crises of French capitalism, the state is pushing for austerity to make workers pay. However, the workers’ movement in France showed a deep questioning of the regime and willingness to fight. Along with this, the country has seen important, youth-led struggles against racism, xenophobia, and Israel’s genocide in Palestine. Now too, in the face of calls for Macron’s resignation, and the advances of the National Rally, the New Popular Front is poised to channel the discontent of the masses into parliament, instead of fostering the independent action of the working class. Instead of fighting to unite the struggles of a working class on the move to deal a blow to French capitalism, the New Popular Front sows illusions that these struggles can be resolved through the electoral process and better administration of the imperialist state. As Left Voice’s French sister site, Révolution Permanente (RP) reports : The important mobilization testifies to the deep anger of public sector workers, which has continued to smolder in recent months in the face of the scale of the offensives [austerity from the state] in preparation... The fall of the government will not have been enough to calm this anger. Moreover, the desire not to stop at this successful day was heard in the processions but also in the assemblies of strikers who met throughout the day. At this time, it remains to be seen how the situation in France will develop. While the New Popular Front was successful at channeling the fight against the Far Right into the institutions of the regime earlier this year, their alliance is now fracturing , a point RP predicted would happen due to the opportunistic nature of the alliance. In an editorial for RP , Paul Morao argues: Rather than leaving the development of the crisis in the hands of the ruling classes, who will be able to arrange it according to their interests, the urgency should be to build a response from below. The working classes and the youth, who demonstrated by the millions against pension reform in 2023, have the strength to respond to the political crisis, around a program against austerity, layoffs, but also against the rotten institutions of the Fifth Republic... Workers and youth cannot continue to be lulled by electoral illusions. We need a workers’ program that aims to end the Fifth Republic, prohibit layoffs, increase all wages and expropriate entire parts of the economy under the control of workers. NEW YORK — Greg Gumbel, a longtime CBS sportscaster, died from cancer, according to a statement from family released by CBS on Friday. He was 78. "He leaves behind a legacy of love, inspiration and dedication to over 50 extraordinary years in the sports broadcast industry; and his iconic voice will never be forgotten," his wife, Marcy Gumbel, and daughter Michelle Gumbel said in a statement. In March, Gumbel missed his first NCAA Tournament since 1997 because of what he said at the time were family health issues. Gumbel was the studio host for CBS since returning to the network from NBC in 1998. He signed an extension with CBS last year that allowed him to continue hosting college basketball while stepping back from NFL announcing duties. In 2001, he announced Super Bowl XXXV for CBS, becoming the first Black announcer in the U.S. to call play-by-play of a major sports championship. David Berson, president and CEO of CBS Sports, described Greg Gumbel as breaking barriers and setting standards for others during his years as a voice for fans in sports, including in the NFL and March Madness. "A tremendous broadcaster and gifted storyteller, Greg led one of the most remarkable and groundbreaking sports broadcasting careers of all time," said Berson. Gumbel had two stints at CBS, leaving the network for NBC when it lost football in 1994 and returning when it regained the contract in 1998. On Monday, Pecararo was named the McNeese State interim football coach after Gary Goff was fired after three seasons leading the Cowboys. “Coach Pec” as he is known to his players, came to McNeese with Goff as defensive coordinator and is currently guiding the remaining staff through a transition period that includes heavy recruiting. It is not an easy time. “It is definitely a strange period,” Pecoraro said. “We have a lot going on right now and you have to worry about players, families, and everything. I just want to do the best job I can for the program and the players and we will see what happens.” While few at the time thought he might be a candidate for the job long-term, those who know him best think the veteran college coach would be a perfect fit as the next Cowboy leader. All-American linebacker Micah Davey and others took to social media to make their views public. Davey wrote on the planform X “Perfect fit is on the staff” Monday after the team was informed of the change. He was not alone as other members of the defense followed the junior’s lead. Keeping Davey and others is a big need for McNeese, which improved by six wins this season but not enough to keep the head coach. “Sure that makes me feel good, I love my players and I love this school,” Pecoraro said. “My family loves it here and this place has been great to us. “But what matters most is we do the best thing for the program while we are here. That always adds to the pressures but it’s the nature of the business.” When reached for comment Schroyer said he is expecting to move quickly on finding a new coach and that he would likely give Pecoraro an interview soon. Pecoraro came to McNeese in 2022 after spending the 2021 season at South Alabama and has had stops at Kansas, Florida Atlantic, Southern Mississippi, Alcorn State, North Alabama, Webber International, and Florida State, where he earned his bachelor’s degree. Twice during his time at Southern Mississippi, his defenses finished in the Top 20 nationally. After all sorts of issues in 2023, Pecoraro changed up his defense and turned it into a solid group that was much more aggressive and attacking. Right now Pecoraro is concentrating on the job at hand, keeping the Cowboys on their upward track. That means retaining the roster as best he can with the transfer portal opening up Dec. 9. “We have a good amount of talent on this roster right now that we have to try as best we can to retain,” Pecoraro said. “No matter what happens, it is important that McNeese keeps this group together and doesn’t start over once again. “What we need to do now is make sure we keep what we have and add what we need to keep moving forward and get to nine wins and championships in the future.” That is a future Pecararo would love to be a part of.

During Robb Report ’s House of Robb at Miami Art Week on Thursday, museum executives and advisers came together to discuss how museums function in the 21 st century. One area of agreement? That cultural institutions are serving as a new town square, a place where people come together to discuss the issues of the day. “We feel more important now than we have in a long time,” said Christopher Bedford, the director of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. “That’s such a great privilege—to be a gathering place for people to be together, think together, negotiate some of the difficult problems of the day together. . .We shouldn’t be mini dictatorships wherein we advance to you the best artists, the best politics, the best way of writing, thinking, speaking. I think what we’re supposed to be doing is encouraging critical thinking, empowering people to think critically. . .And I think that’s the obligation of the town square.” Over the past several years, museums have been at the center of many inflection points, whether it’s the pandemic, efforts to advance diversity and inclusion, or the recent war in Gaza. They’ve dealt both internally and externally with those topics, and have served as locations for both protest and resistance.
