The CEO of the B.C. Restaurant and Food Services Association, Ian Tostenson, said the shows that ended Sunday had an effect that went far beyond other concert or sporting events in the city. Tostenson said Monday that his group estimates there was a $25 million boost for Metro Vancouver’s establishments for each of the three show days. In comparison, a sold-out, highly anticipated Vancouver Canucks playoff game brings an estimated $3 million a day in economic impact, Tostenson said. “In the context of comparing to anything else, it’s not even believable almost — it’s such a huge impact,” Tostenson said. “I was out a little bit on Friday and Saturday, and every place I went to was absolutely lined up and packed.” Tostenson said the concerts rivalled the Olympics in drawing fans from regions far beyond what a typical playoff hockey game would, and while it is difficult to compare the 2010 Winter Games to the Taylor Swift weekend, the events were in the same magnitude in daily impact on restaurants. “The financial impact of the Olympics was massive, (but) it was spread out over a couple weeks in different venues and stuff,” he said. “So, you didn't sort of feel this concentration that you saw with Taylor Swift.” Tostenson also said Swifties bumped up business across Metro Vancouver all weekend, with one major restaurant owner with multiple locations reporting full capacity not just at its downtown location but also in North Vancouver and Olympic Village. He credits the festive mood brought by fans that had an emotional effect on people in general, which in turn has a major impact on restaurants, an industry built largely on discretionary spending. People consume more when the mood is right, he said. “From a financial point of view, the Olympics probably had a bigger impact,” Tostenson said. “But ... A gate has been installed at the club’s entrance and a long driveway leads to a grand turnaround that sweeps you past a new modern clubhouse that’s all right angles, with floor-to-ceiling glass. Seconds after you exit your car, valets are zipping up in golf carts, taking your name, then your bags, handing you keys to your own golf cart, and then zipping off to drop your luggage in the four-bedroom cottage where you’ll stay. A short walk past an expansive putting green you’ll find the pro shop — and then you’ll see the club’s most elegant feature: its golf course. The changes have all come about because Dormie Club was acquired in 2017 by the Dormie Network, a national group that owns seven private golf facilities from Nebraska to New Jersey. (“Dormie” is a word for being ahead in golf — the names were coincidences.) A key to the network’s success has been its ability to find clubs ripe for acquisition, with outstanding golf courses and existing on-site lodging or the room to build it, says Zach Peed, president of the company and its driving force. After investing in Arbor Links Golf Club in Nebraska City, Nebraska, in late 2015, Peed believed he saw an opening in the golf market: a new model of hospitality for traveling professionals who wanted a pure golf experience that eschewed the pools and pickleball courts of their home clubs. His clubs would become dream golf-only getaways for avid players and their pals. “Dormie Network’s concept was sparked by having played competitive golf in college, combined with an element of experiencing and understanding hospitality,” says Peed. “It made sense to blend the two to create golf trips that had more value than just playing golf. We want genuine hospitality to help create unforgettable memories and new friendships.” Part of that formula has been in the lodging strategy; in North Carolina, 15 four-bedroom cottages now are a short golf cart ride from the main clubhouse. In each, golfers all have their own king-size bed and en suite bathroom. A large common room is dominated by a flatscreen television along with a well-stocked bar and snacks. That ability to be both social, or tucked away in your room, extends to the expansive new clubhouse, where a high-ceilinged bar area with blond wood creates an inviting space for dining and drinking, and several hideaway rooms allow for more private diners with just your group. So far, their commitment to hospitality has been helping them expand in both membership and club usage in the increasingly competitive market for traveling golfers. Major players such as Bandon Dunes, Pinehurst Resort, and the Cabot Collection have created — or renovated — a new paradigm where golfers get dining and lodging that’s as showcase-worthy as the courses they play. Comfortable sheets and options beyond pub food aren’t luxuries anymore, but staples for many group trips. Dormie has answered that call by focusing on both the big details and the small ones, like having the dew wiped off each golf cart at dawn outside guest cottages before the day begins or having a tray of cocktails delivered to golfers as their final putt falls on the 18th green. These touches may seem over-the-top, but they stand out in a world where golf travel is increasingly popular — and expensive — after the pandemic lockdowns. Since 2020 there has been an explosion in participation in the sport, with new golfers picking up the game and avid golfers playing more: According to the National Golf Foundation, a record 531 million rounds were played in 2023, surpassing the high of 529 million set in 2021. Supreme Golf, a public golf booking website, reports in its latest analysis that the average cost of a tee time has increased to $49 in 2024 from $38 in 2019, a 30% increase. Those cost increases are also on par (pun intended) with the costs of private clubs and initiation fees during that same period, where membership rosters that were dwindling pre-COVID now have waitlists 50 to 60 people deep, according to Jason Becker, co-founder and chief executive officer of Golf Life Navigators, which matches homebuyers with golf course communities. “There’s been an absolute run on private golf. If we use southwest Florida as an example, where there are 158 golf communities, this time last November, only five had memberships available,” he said. That inability to find a club close to home has pushed avid golfers to look farther afield, choosing national memberships at clubs that require traveling, usually via plane, to play. Dormie has capitalized on this growing segment, offering two types of memberships: First, a national membership, where members pay an initiation fee and monthly dues just as they would at a local club, but instead of one club they have access to seven. The second option is a signature membership for companies, “which allows businesses to use our properties for entertainment needs and requires a multiyear commitment,” Peed says. The network also offers a limited number of regional memberships for those living within a certain distance of one of its clubs. Dormie Network declined to provide the cost of memberships or monthly dues and wouldn’t give membership numbers, but the clubs are structured to lodge roughly 60 golfers, max, on-site at any given property at any time. The total number of beds across the network’s portfolio of properties has increased from 84 in 2019 to 432 today. It saw a jump from 10,000 room nights in 2019 to 48,000 in 2023. This September, Dormie opened GrayBull in Maxwell, in Nebraska’s, Sandhills region. Dormie Network tabbed David McLay Kidd to build the course, who also built the original course at Oregon’s famed Bandon Dunes. Kidd says of the property GrayBull sits on, “It’s like the Goldilocks thing: not too flat, not too steep. It’s kind of in a bowl that looks inwards, and there are no bad views.” That kind of remote destination, where the long-range views are only Mother Nature or other golf holes, is what drives many traveling golfers these days. British lawmakers voted overwhelmingly on Tuesday in favor of plans to introduce some of the world's strictest anti-smoking rules, giving the green light for the bill to progress to the next parliamentary stage. The Tobacco and Vapes Bill aims to make vapes less appealing and would ensure anyone aged 15 this year, or younger would be banned from ever buying cigarettes. After a lengthy debate in the parliament's House of Commons, a total of 415 lawmakers voted in favor of the bill while 47 voted against it. It would ban vape advertising and the sale of vapes in vending machines, as well as restricting vape packaging and flavors that overtly appeal to children and young people, such as bubble gum and cotton candy. "The number of children vaping is growing at an alarming rate and without urgent intervention, we're going to have a generation of children with long-term addiction," Labour health secretary Wes Streeting said. The previous Conservative government announced similar measures to create the first smoke-free generation. However, those plans failed to become law before the general election in the summer. "Whatever our views on this bill are, it is a bold legislation of good intention," Caroline Johnson, the Conservative shadow minister for health, told parliament ahead of the vote. "It's not clear whether it will work but we have to all hope ... that it does." There was some criticism of the bill, including concerns around its impact on civil liberties. Conservative lawmaker Robert Jenrick said on X that he voted against it, adding: "Educate more, ban less. Say no to the nanny state." The bill will now go to the committee stage ahead of the third reading in the House of Commons. It will then move to the House of Lords before receiving the "Royal Assent" - a formality that does not involve further debate. Subject to consultation, the new bill would give the government powers to extend the indoor smoking ban to specific outdoor spaces, such as children's playgrounds and outside schools and hospitals. Britain banned smoking in almost all enclosed public spaces, including bars and workplaces, in 2007. The bill would introduce a licensing scheme for retailers to sell tobacco, vape and nicotine products, and fines of 200 pounds ($251.04) to retailers found to be selling these products to people underage. Expanding the use of standardized packaging to all tobacco products will also be explored. The Los Angeles Dodgers have been quite active this offseason. First, they signed ace Blake Snell to a massive deal before turning around and extending infielder Tommy Edman's contract. A little while later, they signed outfielder Michael Conforto and re-signed reliever Blake Treinen. Treinen acted as the team's closer in the postseason, but the Dodgers may want to add more pitchers around him at the back end of games. Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic recently reported the Dodgers are far from done adding to the bullpen. In fact, the Dodgers' targeted relievers indicate Treinen won't be returning to Los Angeles as the closer. Ardaya has indicated the Dodgers are targeting rival closer Tanner Scott of the San Diego Padres. Spotrac projects Scott to sign a four-year, $65 million contract . "The reigning World Series champions seek at least one more reliever, league sources tell The Athletic, and are looking at the top of that market. Article content The ongoing Canada Post strike has reached the three-week mark as the two sides continue to trade proposals through a government-appointed mediator. Recommended Videos The work stoppage centres around a variety of issues, including disputes over wages and weekend delivery. Here’s a snapshot of the issues underpinning the standoff between the Crown corporation and union. Wage increases The Canadian Union of Postal Workers, which represents 55,000 Canada Post workers, said at the start of the strike that wage increases must be kept in line with inflation, with cost-of-living adjustment payments rolled into the basic wage rate. The union initially called for a cumulative wage hike of 24 per cent over four years. CUPW negotiator Jim Gallant said that figure has moved since the start of negotiations, but declined to comment on the union’s latest proposal. “We have just lived through the worst cost of living crisis in a generation,” the union’s national president Jan Simpson said in a post on Tuesday. Canada Post says it has offered what it calls “competitive” wage increases totalling 11.5 per cent over four years and more paid leave. It notes labour costs rose by $242 million in 2023, or about 6.5 per cent, compared with 2022. The organization declined to comment on Thursday. Weekend delivery One of the main snags in negotiations has been a push to expand delivery to the weekend, but the two sides are at odds over how to staff the expansion. Canada Post has pitched seven-day-a-week delivery as a way to boost revenue and “secure the future of the company” as it struggles to compete with other delivery companies. The Crown corporation says it would staff weekend delivery shifts with a mix of new permanent part-time positions and some full-time, which would “create flexibility while not adding significant long-term fixed costs.” But the union characterizes Canada Post’s proposals as “attacks on full-time work,” accusing the Crown corporation of wanting to increase the part-time mix to more than 50 per cent of the workforce. It says it is concerned some part-timers could be scheduled for as few as eight hours per week and wouldn’t be eligible for benefits until they reach 1,000 hours. “Canada Post has every ability today to deliver parcels on the weekend, inside our collective agreement at straight time,” Gallant said in an interview. “We think it can be done with full-timers ... We’re just saying, ‘Instead of hiring 10 part-timers, you can hire three full time.” Job security and retirement The union has highlighted a number of its demands for better job security, including a request for “improved protections against technological change.” Gallant said Canada Post is “always looking for new technology” that could threaten workers’ duties. “This loading and unloading of trucks by robots is one that they’re really, really looking at (and) forklifts that drive themselves through a plant,” he said. “We’re always afraid.” When it comes to retirement, CUPW says Canada Post wants new workers to accept a defined contribution pension plan, even though its defined benefit pension plan is overfunded by 140 per cent. “All workers deserve the right to retire with dignity, and for us, that means postal workers — present and future — maintain their defined benefit pension plan,” Simpson said. Canada Post says its proposals are “focused on protecting and enhancing what’s important to current employees ... while protecting the defined benefit pension and their job security.” Rural service The union has said it wants job security rights for rural and suburban mail carriers in line with those granted to urban postal workers. It has outlined a number of issues affecting its Rural Suburban Mail Carrier bargaining unit, saying it wants an hourly rate system with appropriate time values, union involvement and “safeguards against (Canada Post’s) unilateral change.” The union says Canada Post must maximize and maintain eight-hour routes for rural workers, grant improved rights for on-call relief employees, and uphold paid meal and rest period rights. It says the Crown corporation must also ensure the bargaining unit’s involvement in service expansion projects. Earlier this week, Simpson called on Canada Post to commit to working with the union “to expand services at the post office including postal banking and electric vehicle charging stations.” Safer working conditions The union has demanded the full elimination of Canada Post’s “separate sort from delivery” system, which entails certain employees spending the entirety of their shifts sorting mail for letter carriers to go out and deliver — as opposed to carriers performing both tasks. It says this system overburdens carriers, who as a result spend more time outdoors and potentially exposed to extreme weather events. “Postal workers suffer the second highest rate of disabling injury among workers under federal jurisdiction, behind only the road transportation sector,” Simpson said. “Growing neighbourhood mail volumes and changing work methods like separate sort-from-delivery are only making things worse.” The union has also proposed increases to short-term disability program payments and injury on duty payments, along with more paid medical days."This Is Not The Time For Balance": LA Times Columnist Resigns In Protest... How major US stock indexes fared Wednesday, 11/27/2024OKLAHOMA CITY — Immigration policy could once again be a top issue at the Oklahoma Capitol this upcoming legislative session. As President-elect Donald Trump pledges his own federal crackdown, Oklahoma Republicans have unveiled their own ideas that they believe will position the state to quickly expel undocumented immigrants next year. Critics of the state’s latest anti-immigration efforts, though, said that Oklahoma’s elected officials don’t appear interested in enacting meaningful policy reforms that make communities safer. They only seem interested in passing extreme policies that garner attention from the Republican president-elect. They said the Oklahoma is already embroiled in a federal lawsuit related to its last anti-immigration effort, and that deportation is a responsibility of federal agencies, not states. State plans Earlier this month, Gov. Kevin Stitt unveiled his plan. He said “Operation Guardian” would deport undocumented immigrants from Oklahoma’s correctional facilities. He tapped Commissioner of Public Safety Tim Tipton to consult with law enforcement, the Trump transition team and the Department of Homeland Security to create and present a plan by Jan. 15. The Oklahoma Department of Corrections houses 526 undocumented immigrants in Oklahoma “jails,” which cost Oklahoma taxpayers about $36,000 per day, according to the governor’s office. “As law and order returns to the White House, Oklahoma will lead the charge with a comprehensive plan to deport those who have committed crimes in Oklahoma while in the country illegally,” Stitt said in a statement Nov. 15. The governor’s office and the Department of Public Safety did not respond to a request for comment on how this initiative could interfere with the rights guaranteed to crime victims. State Rep. Justin Humphrey, R-Lane, said he has submitted language for legislation to create a new charge for undocumented immigrants who commit a crime in the state. This additional charge would carry a sentence of life behind bars or the option of deportation. He said his plan will save taxpayers money because the state is already paying to educate undocumented immigrants and to care for those participating in Oklahoma’s welfare system. Humphrey said his idea was “well received” and that he didn’t get any pushback at the interim study where he first mentioned it in October, although he said the study was not highly attended. Still, he said he expects the support of law enforcement on this bill. He said he is not sure if the bill is still necessary given Stitt’s proposal, but he is going to hold onto it and decide later whether to file it or to find someone else to file it. Humphrey said he’s concerned about Stitt’s “consistency” on immigration policy, referencing an immigration task force created by the governor. He said Stitt had presented “mixed messages.” Stitt created the Oklahoma State Work Permits and Visa Task Force to make recommendations that would “allow immigrants to have the visas, permits and documentation to pursue the American Dream.” The task force’s recommendations included creating an Office of New Oklahomans, issuing qualified migrants “Driving Privilege Cards” and pilot programs to issue more work permits and visas to non-citizens. After the recommendations were released in September, a spokesperson for Stitt said on social media that the governor would not implement the recommendations. Nicole Maldonado, vice president of Oklahoma’s chapter of the League of United Latin American Citizens, or LULAC, said state officials seem to be focused on passing the “most extreme and crazy” policy ideas instead of “reasonable” solutions to reduce the taxpayer burden. LULAC advocates for the rights of Hispanic Americans. “I think that this is just another tactic for them to be part of the show and not actually to create reasonable solutions to the issue,” she said. “I think that it’s just more to be like, ‘Hey, look at us. We’re trying to do this.’ This is to receive Trump’s attention. But I don’t think that there’s going to be a meaningful solution or policy that is going to come out of this.” Maldonado said Humphrey’s idea seems to do the opposite of what Stitt wants to do by bringing more undocumented immigrants into Oklahoma’s correctional facilities. In 2022, over 89,000 undocumented immigrants in Oklahoma contributed about $227.5 million in state and local taxes, according to a report by a nonprofit, nonpartisan tax policy organization. This amount does not include what undocumented immigrants paid into Social Security and Medicare despite not being able to access these benefits themselves. Cindy Nguyen, policy director for the American Civil Liberties Union of Oklahoma, said policies like Humphrey’s create fear in immigrant communities and are not realistic solutions for the state. “(This) will only cause communities to live in constant fear as we saw with a lot of the anti-immigration bills that were introduced last legislative session,” Nguyen said. “We know that many victims of violence are now going to be even more afraid to speak out and report this crime because they are afraid of the consequences of that. And now ... they’re even more afraid to report it, because they see that they might get a life sentence if they’re undocumented.” She said that Oklahoma’s prisons and jails are already overcrowded and this will create even more of a burden on taxpayers. “It is not a great solution to address immigration or address the fear of our undocumented communities in Oklahoma, who are also taxpayers who go to our schools, who are our neighbors, who contribute to making the state even greater and more diverse,” Nguyen said. The last attempt to pass immigration policy by Oklahoma’s GOP is currently in legal limbo. House Bill 4156, signed by Stitt in April, creates a crime called “impermissible occupation” for willfully entering the state without legal authorization to be in the United States. A first offense would be a misdemeanor punishable by one year in county jail, a fine of up to $500 or both. The person would be required to leave the state within 72 hours. A second offense would be a felony with up to two years in prison, a fine of $1,000 or both. Multiple parties, including the ACLU and the federal government, have sued to prevent HB 4156 from taking effect. Implementation was put on hold by a federal judge, pending legal challenges. Oklahoma Attorney General Gentner Drummond has appealed.
