Tema Metropolitan FA Launches Maiden Girls Colts ChampionshipMEXICO CITY (AP) — Over 18,000 people in Mexico have registered online to run for Supreme Court seats and federal judgeships in the country's contentious new selection process , but a random drawing in the end will determine who gets on the ballot, officials said Monday. The ruling party pushed through a constitutional reform in September to make all federal judges stand for election, replacing the system where court employees and lawyers mainly move up through the ranks. Current court employees and their supporters have staged dozens of demonstrations against the reforms, calling them part of a ruling-party campaign to weaken checks and balances and eliminate independent regulatory and oversight bodies. Now, candidates for Supreme Court seats and federal judgeships need only a law degree, a grade point average of 3.2, “five years of professional experience” and five letters of recommendation from neighbors or friends. That, and some luck in the final drawing. Officials rejected criticism that has called the process rushed or amateurish for the often highly technical posts that can hear cases including intellectual property, organized crime and Constitutional law. “The results have been spectacular,” said Arturo Zaldivar, a top advisor to President Claudia Sheinbaum. According to the plan, evaluation committees will have just over a month to review thousands of resumes and whittle the field to about 10 candidates or less for each for the 881 judgeships and nine seats on the Supreme Court. Then 1,793 names chosen at random from those selected will appear on the ballot on June 1. Critics warn that many who land on the ballot will be unknowns who perhaps have never argued a case in the courts they seek to run. “You don’t elect a doctor or a surgeon for an operation based on their popularity, you elect them based on their technical expertise, their ability, their knowledge,” said Sergio Méndez Silva, the legal coordinator for the civic group Foundation for Justice. “That also applies for a judge.” With candidates now having to run election campaigns, critics warn there's a chance drug cartels or political parties could finance them to get friendly judges onto the bench. There are also concerns that the evaluation committees deciding who makes the cut for the selection to appear on ballots may not be impartial. Most committee members were appointed by the legislative or executive branches, controlled by the ruling Morena party. Some critics argue that the current justice system, which is riddled with nepotism, corruption and a lack of accountability, needs to be changed. “We need a justice system that gives results,” said Martínez Garza, an academic and former head of the human rights commission in the northern border state of Nuevo Leon who has registered to run for a Supreme Court seat. Trials in Mexico can last for years, and the ruling party has added to the growing list of crimes for which bail is not allowed, meaning that a large percentage of the prison population is people awaiting trial.777pub mines pattern

It was a Netflix documentary Michael Nantais watched during the early months of the pandemic that cemented his love of sustainable farming. Nantais, who grew up just outside of Montreal in Pointe-Claire, started experimenting in his mother's backyard — growing kale, cucumbers, and zucchinis for the first time more than four years ago. "I didn't really know much at that time," the now 26-year-old said. "I was buying seedlings and planting them." Then came the rush of changes to his life and career plans. Nantais switched from an economics degree at university to a biology program to learn more about plants. He focused on learning everything about farming — first from a plant soil lab and later at a vertical farm in Montreal. Vertical farming stacks crops vertically in layers, typically in an indoor setup, which allows farmers to control lighting, humidity, and temperature. It's gaining popularity, especially in urban areas. "Was my mind set on vertical farming when I switched to biology? The answer is no," Nantais recalled. "I was open-minded ... I just wanted to learn," he said. Younger Canadians may not own the farmland or heavy machinery needed to launch traditional agriculture careers, but they are equipped with technology. That's changing how they get their foot in the door — even when they don't come from farm families. Traditionally, many agriculture students came from rural areas and planned to take over a farm eventually, said Jay Steeves, dean of Werklund School of Agriculture & Technology at Olds College in Alberta. Now, more students from urban areas are joining agricultural programs at schools, and graduates are finding niche areas of the field. "It's not just that broad acre farming with large operations," said Steeves. "We're starting to see indoor agriculture, the idea of produce and food creation for a growing population." Steeves recalled a school project a year ago when a student grew lettuce in their dorm room and was able to control different environments, moisture and light intensity remotely. "That idea of a student or an individual in a small, little dorm room with a growing operation the size of a mini-fridge is part of agriculture at this point in time," Steeves said, "and is now producing food that can be used and consumed by anyone on the planet." Innovation is key for aspiring farmers, said Craig Klemmer, principal economist at Farm Credit Canada. Starting small could be the first step. "With the changing face of the Canadian population, it's creating new opportunities for markets," he said. For instance, there's been a growing demand for sheep and goat meat, which can be started small and scaled up. Others are looking into more niche areas of the sector, he said — growing herbs or working in sustainable farming — which need fewer capital investments and resources to get operations going. "When you look at the opportunities, it's more on the smaller niche," Klemmer said. "Finding a new and creative solution, making some partnerships would be good ways to start." Nantais moved to Toronto last year to set up his own vertical farm business with an investment from his uncle but ran into a logistical issue: finding an appropriate rental space for the operation. He decided instead to partner with an existing vertical farm, Living Earth Farm, which grows sunflowers, peas, radishes, basil, cilantro and arugula, among other microgreens. He operates the farm as a partner and plans to be there for a while. "Hopefully, we can expand, increase our supply and start selling more of it." Exploring niche areas of farming comes at a time when the costs of farmland and farm machines have gone up exponentially over the years. The price of farmland in southern Ontario has gone up from an average of $2,616 per hectare in 1996 to approximately $23,100 per hectare in 2023, according to Farm Credit Canada's historical farmland values report. Other provinces have seen similar price jumps. "The reality, if we look at traditional crop production in Canada at large scale, they are very high barriers to entry," Klemmer said. "It would require quite a bit of capital to make those investments." That means not everyone is in a position to own a facility or run farmland, no matter the size. Steeves said many young graduates from the agricultural college are pivoting to areas such as crop science and working with larger producers to help them become more efficient. "A farmer isn't your classic picture, (a) person standing in the field, getting their hands dirty working with animals," Steeves said. Field work including drone assessments, pest management and soil testing are jobs increasingly finding a place among modern agriculture workers who want to be a part of the food system but can't own their own operations. "It's not so much operating and owning but doing more of the consulting for production," Steeves said. Resiliency can go a long way for a young farmer. Just like any other job, Steeves said, aspiring farmers need soft skills such as networking and the ability to move around for jobs. Despite rising interest in farming and a growing culture of grow-your-own-food, there remains a shortage in labour supply in the farming sector. As a large number of Canadian farmers head into retirement, fewer young people are stepping up to take on those roles. About 61 per cent of Canadian farm operators were 55 and older, according to a 2021 Statistics Canada report. Meanwhile, the number of farmers under 35 fell to 8.6 per cent as of 2021, compared with 11.5 per cent in 2001. "I think we still need more people," Steeves said. He said there's a place for everyone to be a part of agriculture — if not at the farmer or producer level — and still feel connected to the industry. "We're still trying to get rid of that myth that you have to come from this background in order to be involved," Steeves said. This report by The Canadian Press was first published Dec. 21, 2024. Humanoid Origin, the studio founded by former Mass Effect director Casey Hudson in 2021, is ending development of its untitled sci-fi game and shutting its doors, after an "an unexpected shortfall of funding left [it] unable to sustain operations." Hudson, who also served as BioWare general manager before departing the studio in 2020, announced the establishment of Humanoid Origin (initially Humanoid Studios) in June 2021, teasing it was working on an "all-new IP". A year later, Hudson shared a little more information on the "multi-platform AAA game", as well as early concept art, calling it a "character-driven narrative in an all-new science-fiction universe". Today, however, Hudson released a statement announcing the project's termination and the closure of the studio. "Earlier today, we informed our staff that Humanoid Origin will be shutting down," he wrote. "Despite efforts to shield the studio from broader challenges in the industry, an unexpected shortfall of funding left us unable to sustain operations." "We're heartbroken that we will not be able to bring our new science-fiction universe to completion," Hudson continued. "Our main concern at this time however is for our team, and we are committed to supporting them in their transition to new employment. "In our time together, the team achieved incredible progress, and demonstrated that it's possible to do amazing work while fostering a culture of fun and creativity. We thank them for their talent, courage, and friendship. "Thank you to everyone who supported us throughout our journey." Humanoid Origin is the latest studio to be impacted in what continues to be a devastating year for games industry employees, with over 14,000 people estimated to have lost their jobs so far. That's compared to the 10,500 games industry workers who were laid off across the entirety of 2023. The plans, which had the potential to benefit over 30 million borrowers, were shelved amid ongoing legal challenges and the impending transition of power. Forgiveness Plans Targeted Struggling BorrowersThe initial proposal, commonly known as "Plan B," sought to offer $10,000 in debt forgiveness to the majority of borrowers. This program aimed to target four particular groups of borrowers: individuals facing escalating balances from high interest accumulation, those enrolled in low-quality schools that do not meet federal criteria, borrowers with loans exceeding 20 or 25 years, and those qualified for current forgiveness plans who had yet to apply. The second strategy concentrated on those borrowers experiencing financial difficulties. Assistance through this initiative would have been automatically provided to individuals who meet hardship criteria like low income, high debt levels, or having a disability. Other borrowers may have sought personalized evaluations. Legal and Political Hurdles Block ImplementationBoth proposals encountered unmanageable challenges. "Plan B" continued to be hindered by legal disputes, as a federal court order blocked its implementation. The forgiveness plan based on hardship, currently in draft stage, is not anticipated to be completed until 2025. This schedule set its execution after Biden's presidency, lacking assurance of backing from the forthcoming administration. Administration officials probably retracted the proposals to prevent possible negative consequences from the forthcoming Trump administration. By abolishing the draft regulations, officials aimed to avert the chance of revised rules that might negatively affect borrowers. Furthermore, resolving the legal issues regarding "Plan B" could prevent precedent-setting rulings that may limit future debt relief initiatives. Impact on Borrowers and Future ChallengesBorrowers who were optimistic about these plans now confront doubt. Nevertheless, eligibility for various forgiveness programs stays unchanged. Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) still provides assistance to individuals who satisfy the requirements. The administration announced that 55,000 more borrowers received approval for PSLF, bringing the total to nearly one million recipients in the program over the last four years. Other Relief Initiatives Remain ActiveThe administration also highlighted additional achievements. More than $56.5 billion in aid was authorized for borrowers participating in Income-Driven Repayment (IDR) programs. Moreover, $28.7 billion was canceled for 1.6 million borrowers deceived by their institutions, while $16.2 billion was released for 572,000 borrowers via the Total and Permanent Disability discharge program. The administration has recently restored the ICR and PAYE repayment options, potentially resulting in loan forgiveness after 20 or 25 years. These actions seek to assist borrowers as ambiguity envelops the SAVE plan, a recent IDR alternative that is presently encountering legal issues. Future of Loan Forgiveness Under Republican LeadershipAs Republicans prepare to take charge of Congress and the White House, alterations to student loan forgiveness policies appear probable. Discussions are already underway regarding proposals to eliminate IDR-based forgiveness for new borrowers and limit relief based on executive actions. Nonetheless, the degree of these alterations is still uncertain. Advocacy organizations are calling on the administration to quicken the relief process for borrowers who have already been approved for forgiveness. Some are advocating for one-sided debt forgiveness for older borrowers prior to Biden's departure from office. Donald Trump called for the end of daylight savings time in a post on Truth Social Friday. “The Republican Party will use its best efforts to eliminate Daylight Saving Time, which has a small but strong constituency, but shouldn’t! Daylight Saving Time is inconvenient, and very costly to our nation,” the president-elect wrote . DOGE heads Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy also posted last month that they wanted to end the changing of the clock. Most American adults dislike daylight savings— but are uncertain whether they want daylight savings time or standard time to be permanent. Trump has not signaled which he would pick. Standard time, in place during the winter, extends daylight in the morning. Daylight savings time, used during the summer, extends daylight in the evenings. Twenty states have passed bills enacting year-round DST, though they can’t be implemented without federal action. The Senate passed a permanent DST bill in 2022, but further efforts have sputtered out. Arizona and Hawaii both have permanent standard time. BBC reported that Apple’s new AI notification system sent a message from the outlet that falsely claimed Luigi Mangione shot himself. The new technology aims to group together notifications; however, it falsely wrote that the suspect in UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson’s Manhattan slaying had shot himself. The BBC sent a message to Apple in regards to the notification, but the company declined to comment. A BBC spokesperson said, “It is essential to us that our audiences can trust any information or journalism published in our name and that includes notifications.” The notification included other news stories, which were described correctly. The message read: “Luigi Mangione shoots himself; Syrian mother hopes Assad pays the price; South Korea police raid Yoon Suk Yeol’s office.” The BBC also reported that it’s seemingly not the only news organization dealing with the misleading summarizations. A screenshot allegedly showed that a New York Times grouped notification read that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was arrested. The screenshot could not be independently verified by the BBC, and the New York Times declined to comment. Posters are a great way to celebrate your favorite fandom. Legendary quarterback Aaron Rodgers is finally opening up about his strained relationship with his family. In his new documentary, Aaron Rodgers: Enigma , Rodgers explained that he has “stunted emotional intelligence” because of the lack of open emotion in his home growing up. “I think I saw my dad cry when my grandfather passed. And that might have been it,” Rodgers shared. “There wasn’t space for emotion.” Rodgers’ brother, Jordan, first opened up about the family’s rift during his time on The Bachelorette in 2016. During a hometown date with his now-wife JoJo Fletcher, the family explained that while they “miss” Rodgers, they no longer have a relationship with him. In a 2017 profile with The New York Times , Rodgers’ father, Ed, confirmed that he hadn’t spoken to his son in three years. “Fame can change things,” he said. At the time, Rodgers said he didn’t want to talk about his family publicly. In the doc, Rodgers spoke about his family while participating in an ayahuasca ceremony. The quarterback said the psychedelic drug allows users to “model a new way of thinking about masculinity, or what it means to be a man.” Released bodycam footage shows Paris Hilton’s ex-fiancé, Chris Zylka, in a chaotic brawl with police after a failed carjacking. Police in a Cleveland suburb first responded to reports of a shirtless, barefoot man walking in traffic in freezing temperatures on Dec. 4, local outlet WKBN first reported. Zylka was found in the middle of an intersection, where he allegedly tried to break into a woman’s car. He pointed a cell phone at the cops and began foaming at the mouth, leading officers to believe he was under the influence of drugs, according to the police report. Footage shows Zylka struggling with police officers and resisting arrest even after being tasered in the leg twice. He was then put in an ambulance by paramedics. The actor is now facing felony charges of assault and attempt to commit an offense, as well as misdemeanor disorderly conduct, resisting arrest and aggravated menacing. Hilton and Zylka started dating in 2017 after being friends for years. He proposed in early 2018 during a ski trip in Aspen, Colorado, but they called off their engagement in November that same year. Vanderpump Rules alum James Kennedy is refusing to apologize for his domestic violence arrest . “We are in the process of conducting our own investigation into the allegations levied by the Burbank Police Department against James,” Kennedy’s attorneys said in a statement to the Daily Mail . “We understand that there were no injuries and we are hoping that, after careful review, the city’s attorneys will decide not to file formal charges.” Police were called to Kennedy’s home on Tuesday because of an argument between Kennedy and a woman. That night, Kennedy attended Kathy Hilton’s Christmas party with girlfriend Ally Lewber, though it’s unknown if she is the victim. Police told People that after an investigation, they arrested the reality star for misdemeanor domestic violence. He later posted $20,000 bail. A source at the Christmas party told People that Kennedy was acting “super aggressive.” “He was acting so erratic, running back and forth to the bar and body-checking people along the way,” the source alleged. “He appeared inebriated. Spent the evening mostly alone but when he did speak to people, he appeared irritated and rude.” Scouted selects products independently. Apparently, boosting prostate health can actually be pleasurable—at least, that’s what premium sexual wellness brand MysteryVibe says. The Molto, an ultra-slim and bendable prostate vibrator designed by a doctor, is engineered to be the same size and width as a doctor’s finger and to mimic similar motions to that performed during an exam, allowing for not only intense prostate (the prostate is often hailed as the male ‘G-spot’) and anal stimulation but also a release of prostatic fluids. It’s a great sex toy for those new to anal play or who are looking for an ultra-sleek vibrator with possible health-boosting benefits. The prostate vibrator is equipped with 16 vibration settings and eight pre-set vibration patterns, allowing for superior control and customization. A doctor has rubbished Brandi Glanville’s scary medical theory about her “deflated” face , saying he’s concerned about an infection that started via an injection. The 52-year-old Real Housewives of Beverly Hills alum claims doctor s told her that it may have been caused by “a parasite that jumps around my face.” But Dr. Terry Dubrow, from Botched , has said he’s “concerned about an infectious process”. He told TMZ : “It’s an infectious process or a foreign body reaction to something she’s had injected.” A foreign body reaction is the response of biological tissue to any foreign material in the tissue, despite it often being inert and nontoxic, according to ScienceDirect.com Dubrow added: “Brandi needs a diagnosis... she has to figure out if there’s a microorganism in there. It’s not gonna be a parasite, it’s not gonna be something she ate... it’s going to be something that got into her bloodstream though, and seeded some foreign body.” Dubrow thinks Glanville either has a micro bacterium, a type of bacteria, or a fungus, a type of organism. Sick it! pic.twitter.com/hrtAzRwOCW A Buckingham Palace maid was arrested this week after she allegedly went “crazy” following a staff Christmas party which saw glasses and punches thrown in a London bar. A report in The Sun said as many as 50 royal servants gathered for an after-party following drinks at the palace Tuesday when the maid, 24, took a swing at a bar manager, threw glasses, and was ultimately arrested for common assault, criminal damage, and being drunk and disorderly. She was released after 24 hours with a fine. “The group walked in and this one girl just got hysterical,” a source told The Sun . “She started smashing glasses and abusing our staff members, so we had to call the police. I’ve never seen one person get that crazy during a night out. She was on another level.” A Buckingham Palace spokesperson said: “We are aware of an incident outside the workplace involving a number of Household staff who had previously attended an early evening reception at the Palace. While this was an informal social gathering, not an official palace Christmas party, the facts will be fully investigated, with a robust disciplinary process followed in relation to individual staff and appropriate action taken.”

777pub pilipinong sariling casino The Assad regime’s brutal half-century-long grip on Syria has come to end, in a stunning defeat by opposition insurgents who seized control of Damascus on Sunday after more than 13 years of civil war. In extraordinary scenes, jubilant crowds took to the streets waving a revolutionary flag and shouting “Freedom”, as the capital was littered with the discarded uniforms of government forces. Families of relatives left to rot for years in the regime’s notorious prisons waited anxiously for news of loved ones as videos showed fighters freeing thousands from jails across the country. Others gleefully ransacked the presidential palace and residence, rifling through luxury designer items belonging to the long-term dictator, after President Bashar al-Assad, along with his wife Asmaa and their two children, as well as top officials, vanished. Russia, a close ally that has propped up the regime for years and will see this as a major blow, said Assad left the country after negotiations with rebel groups and had given instructions to transfer power peacefully. Late on Sunday, Russian state media said Assad and his family had been granted asylum and were in Moscow. World leaders including Sir Keir Starmer welcomed the end of the Assad regime, albeit amid concerns about what comes next for the war-torn region. Assad’s sudden overthrow at the hands of a Turkish-backed revolt with roots in jihadist Sunni Islam, limits Iran’s ability to spread weapons to its allies and could cost Russia its Mediterranean naval base. It also paves the way for millions of refugees scattered for more than a decade in camps across Turkey, Lebanon and Jordan to finally return home. For Syrians, it brought a sudden unexpected end to a war that had been in deep freeze for years, with hundreds of thousands already dead, cities pounded to dust, an economy hollowed out by global sanctions and no resolution in sight. Families who had been cowering in their homes and fearing more bloody battles ahead, emerged on Sunday to celebrate. “It was one of the smoothest transitions ever,” Mariam told The Independent from a town on the outskirts of the capital. “We thought there would be blood soaking the streets, but no one wanted to fight for Assad any more. Finally, Syrians can be proud of being Syrian.” “I can’t stop crying,” added Ahmed, who owns a clothes shop also in a town near the capital. “I can’t believe he has been defeated.” A fighter among the opposition ranks, who fought in the battles against regime forces in Idlib, Aleppo, Hama and Homs over the past week, told The Independent the battle against Assad had been one “for everyone”. He said he hoped the country’s myriad factions could now come together. “We are fighting for Syria for everyone: Muslims, Christians, Alawites, Druze – we are fighting for a Syria that is for all,” he added. The Islamist group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), the largest and best-organised of the rebel outfits , said Syria was now free from the “tyrant” Assad . The rebels said they had entered the capital with no sign of army deployments. Thousands in cars and on foot congregated at a main square in Damascus waving and chanting after half a century of Assad family rule. Syria’s army command notified officers that Assad’s rule had ended , but later added that it was continuing operations against “terrorist groups” in the key cities of Hama and Homs and in the Deraa countryside. Assad, who has not spoken in public since the sudden rebel advance a week ago, has fled Damascus, the Russian foreign ministry said. His government – known for generations as heading one of the harshest police states in the entire Middle East with hundreds of thousands of political prisoners in its gulag – melted away overnight. Leading rebel commander Abu Mohammed al-Golani said there was no room for turning back and said the group was determined to continue the path they started in 2011 during the Arab Spring uprisings. Rebel Commander Hassan Abdul-Ghani said “In the midst of victory” they should not forget those who died fighting “and paved the way for us towards the capital”. The insurgents also dealt a major blow to the influence of Russia and Iran in the heart of the region – key allies who propped up Assad during critical periods in the conflict. Since the rebels swept into Aleppo a week ago, government defences have crumbled across the country as insurgents seized a string of major cities and rose up in places where the rebellion had long seemed over. After years locked behind frozen front lines, the insurgents burst out of their northwestern stronghold in Idlib and pushed the swiftest battlefield advance by either side since a street uprising against President Assad mushroomed into civil war more than a decade ago. The collapse followed a seismic shift in the balance of power in the Middle East after the leadership of Lebanon’s Iran-backed militant Hezbollah, a lynchpin of Assad’s battlefield force, were killed over the past two months. Russia, Assad’s other key ally, has been embroiled in a ruinous war in Ukraine. Emma Beals, a non-resident fellow of the Middle East Institute and a leading Syria expert, said that while geopolitics played a major role in the regime overthrow, “ultimately this is a phenomenal set of events caused by Syrians themselves”. “It was a perfect storm, where everything aligns,” she said. “But at the end of the day, people are tired, they want something new. “In regime areas there was an economic collapse, a huge loss of life in army and other social shocks. Even after fighting ended, people saw no benefits. Instead they saw regime cronies getting the contracts and getting wealthier as they got poorer.” But she warned that the “hard work starts tomorrow” and that trying to bring together so many warring factions in such a devastated country will be a major challenge. “The huge flip in power and the speed with which this happened is going to make the security situation of the next weeks, and the provision of services alongside that, hard,” she explained. “There is also the discussion about who’s in the transitional government, [and] what the next steps are.” When the celebrations fade, Syria’s new leaders will face the daunting task of trying to deliver stability to a diverse country with competing factions that will need billions of dollars in aid and investments to rebuild. The Syrian rebel coalition, for its part, said it is continuing work to complete the transfer of power to a transitional governing body with full executive powers. “The great Syrian revolution has moved from the stage of struggle to overthrow the Assad regime to the struggle to build a Syria together that befits the sacrifices of its people,” the rebels said in a statement. But there were already clashes erupting with other factions. The Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces, who control the northeast of the country and are backed by the United States, said they were already locked in battles with Turkish-backed opposition forces over the northwestern city of Manbij. The pace of events has stunned Arab capitals and raised fears of a new wave of regional instability. It marks a turning point for Syria, shattered by years of war which has turned cities to rubble, killed hundreds of thousands of people, and forced millions abroad as refugees. The United States will continue to maintain its presence in eastern Syria and will take measures necessary to prevent a resurgence of the Islamic State, deputy assistant secretary of defence for the Middle East, Daniel Shapiro, said. HTS, which spearheaded the rebel advances across western Syria, was formerly an al-Qaeda affiliate known as the Nusra Front until its leader, Abu Mohammed al-Golani, severed ties with the global jihadist movement in 2016. Golani’s outfit is the country’s strongest rebel group and some Syrians remain fearful it will impose draconian Islamist rule or instigate reprisals. Even after Assad had fled, Israel continued to strike targets associated with his government and its Iranian-backed allies, including one in Damascus where Israel had previously accused Iran of developing missiles. Benjamin Netanyahu said the toppling of Assad could make it easier for Israel to reach a ceasefire deal to free hostages in Gaza. The UK said it welcomed the fall of Assad’s “barbaric regime”. “The Syrian people have suffered under Assad’s barbaric regime for too long and we welcome his departure,” Sir Keir said in a statement on Sunday. “Our focus is now on ensuring a political solution prevails, and peace and stability is restored. “We call on all sides to protect civilians and minorities, and ensure essential aid can reach the most vulnerable in the coming hours and days.”

By Abdulrahman Shaheen and Abby Sewell | Associated Press DAMASCUS, Syria — Syrians poured into streets echoing with celebratory gunfire on Sunday after a stunning rebel advance reached the capital, ending the Assad family’s 50 years of iron rule but raising questions about the future of the country and the wider region. Joyful crowds gathered in squares in Damascus, waving the Syrian revolutionary flag in scenes that recalled the early days of the Arab Spring uprising, before a brutal crackdown and the rise of an insurgency plunged the country into a nearly 14-year civil war. Others gleefully ransacked the presidential palace and residence after President Bashar Assad and other top officials vanished, their whereabouts unknown. Russia, a close ally, said Assad left the country after negotiations with rebel groups and had given instructions to transfer power peacefully. Abu Mohammed al-Golani , a former al-Qaida commander who cut ties with the group years ago and says he embraces pluralism and religious tolerance, leads the biggest rebel faction and is poised to chart the country’s future. In his first public appearance since fighters entered the Damascus suburbs Saturday, al-Golani visited the sprawling Umayyad Mosque and called Assad’s fall “a victory to the Islamic nation.” Calling himself by his given name, Ahmad al-Sharaa, and not his nom de guerre, he told hundreds of people that Assad had made Syria “a farm for Iran’s greed.” The rebels face the daunting task of healing bitter divisions in a country ravaged by war and still split among armed factions. Turkey-backed opposition fighters are battling U.S.-allied Kurdish forces in the north, and the Islamic State group is still active in some remote areas. Syrian state television broadcast a rebel statement early Sunday saying Assad had been overthrown and all prisoners had been released. They called on people to preserve the institutions of “the free Syrian state.” The rebels later announced a curfew in Damascus from 4 p.m. to 5 a.m. The rebels said they freed people held at the notorious Saydnaya prison, where rights groups say thousands were tortured and killed . A video circulating online purported to show rebels breaking open cell doors and freeing dozens of female prisoners, many of whom appeared shocked. At least one small child was seen among them. “This happiness will not be completed until I can see my son out of prison and know where is he,” said one relative, Bassam Masr. “I have been searching for him for two hours. He has been detained for 13 years.” Rebel commander Anas Salkhadi later appeared on state TV and sought to reassure Syria’s religious and ethnic minorities, saying: “Syria is for everyone, no exceptions. Syria is for Druze, Sunnis, Alawites, and all sects.” “We will not deal with people the way the Assad family did,” he added. Damascus residents prayed in mosques and celebrated in squares, calling, “God is great.” People chanted anti-Assad slogans and honked car horns. Teenage boys picked up weapons apparently discarded by security forces and fired into the air. Revelers filled Umayyad Square, where the Defense Ministry is located. Some waved the three-starred Syrian flag that predates the Assad government and was adopted by the revolutionaries. Elsewhere, many parts of the capital were empty and shops were closed. Soldiers and police left their posts and fled, and looters broke into the Defense Ministry. Videos showed families wandering the presidential palace, some carrying stacks of plates and other household items. “It’s like a dream. I need someone to wake me up,” said opposition fighter Abu Laith, adding the rebels were welcomed in Damascus with “love.” At the Justice Ministry, where rebels stood guard, Judge Khitam Haddad said they were protecting documents from the chaos. Outside, some residents sought information about relatives who disappeared under Assad. The rebels “have felt the pain of the people,” said one woman, giving only her first name, Heba. She worried about possible revenge killings by the rebels, many of whom appeared to be underage. Syria’s al-Watan newspaper, which was historically pro-government, wrote: “We are facing a new page for Syria. We thank God for not shedding more blood.” It added that media workers should not be blamed for publishing past government statements, saying it “only carried out the instructions.” A statement from the Alawite sect that has formed the core of Assad’s base called on young Syrians to be “calm, rational and prudent and not to be dragged into what tears apart the unity of our country.” The rebels mainly come from the Sunni Muslim majority in Syria, which also has sizable Druze, Christian and Kurdish communities. In Qamishli in the northeast, a Kurdish man slapped a statue of the late leader Hafez Assad with his shoe. Syrian Prime Minister Mohammed Ghazi Jalali said the government was ready to “extend its hand” to the opposition and turn its functions over to a transitional government. A video shared on Syrian opposition media showed armed men escorting him from his office and to the Four Seasons hotel on Sunday. Rami Abdurrahman of the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights told The Associated Press that Assad, 59, took a flight early Sunday from Damascus. A senior diplomat from the United Arab Emirates, which had sought to rehabilitate Assad’s image and has welcomed high-profile exiles in recent years, declined to comment on his whereabouts. Anwar Gargash said Assad’s destination at this point is a “footnote in history,” comparing it to the long exile of German Kaiser Wilhelm II after World War I. The rebel advances since Nov. 27 were the largest in recent years, and saw the cities of Aleppo, Hama and Homs fall within days as the Syrian army melted away. Russia, Iran and Lebanon’s Hezbollah militant group, which provided crucial support to Assad throughout the uprising, abandoned him as they reeled from other conflicts. The end of Assad’s rule was a major blow to Iran and its allies, already weakened by conflict with Israel . Iran, which had strongly backed him throughout the civil war, said Syrians should decide their future “without destructive, coercive, foreign intervention.” The Iranian Embassy in Damascus was ransacked after apparently having been abandoned. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu meanwhile said Israeli troops had temporarily seized a buffer zone in the Golan Heights established in 1974, saying it was to protect Israeli residents after Syrian troops abandoned positions. Israel’s military later warned residents of five southern Syria communities to stay home for their safety, and didn’t respond to questions. Israel captured the Golan in the 1967 Mideast war and later annexed it. The international community, except for the United States, views it as occupied. The rebels are led by the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham group, or HTS , which has its origins in al-Qaida and is considered a terrorist organization by the United States and the United Nations. Al-Golani, has sought to recast the group as a moderate and tolerant force. “Golani has made history and sparked hope among millions of Syrians,” said Dareen Khalifa, a senior adviser with the International Crisis Group. “But he and the rebels now face a formidable challenge ahead.” The U.N.’s special envoy for Syria, Geir Pedersen, called Saturday for urgent talks in Geneva to ensure an “orderly political transition.” The Gulf nation of Qatar, a key regional mediator, hosted an emergency meeting of foreign ministers and top officials from eight countries with interests in Syria late Saturday. They included Iran, Saudi Arabia, Russia and Turkey. Majed al-Ansari, Qatar’s Foreign Ministry spokesman, said they agreed on the need “to engage all parties on the ground,” including the HTS, and that the main concern is “stability and safe transition.” Sewell reported from Beirut. THE HAGUE, Netherlands (AP) — Alyssa Naeher ended her national team career with one last win. The stalwart goalkeeper made two critical saves in her final match for the United States, and the Americans beat the Netherlands 2-1 on Tuesday. “I definitely wasn’t thinking about it during the game, just wanted to win the game and do what I could to come away with the ‘W’ for us to close out the year,” Naeher said. Lynn Williams scored the go-ahead goal in the 71st minute for the U.S., which won its fifth Olympic gold medal in France this summer and wrapped up the year on a 20-game unbeaten streak. The Americans were coming off a scoreless draw with England on Saturday at Wembley Stadium. Naeher announced two weeks ago that the European exhibitions would be her final matches. The 36-year-old goalkeeper played in 115 games for the U.S., with 111 starts, 89 wins and 69 shutouts. Naeher is the only U.S. keeper with shutouts in both a World Cup and an Olympic final. She was in goal when the United States defeated the Netherlands 2-0 in the 2019 Women's World Cup final . “I feel like in my heart I would love to keep going. In my head, in my body and mind, I feel like it’s the right time. And I think it’s the right time with this team as well as it builds towards the future and towards 2027,” Naeher said. “This environment, this team, is an incredible team to be a part of, but it’s also really hard and really challenging in a lot of ways as well. “I feel like I’ve given everything I have to give for this team and that’s why I feel at peace with that.” The Netherlands took the lead on center back Veerle Buurman's header off a corner kick in the 15th minute. Naeher prevented a second goal when she punched away Dominique Janssen's shot in the 38th. The United States drew even at the end of the first half on an own goal that deflected off Buurman and past Dutch goalkeeper Daphne van Domselaar. Story continues below video Naeher slid to stop Danielle van de Donk's shot in the 69th minute before Williams, a second-half substitute, scored her fourth goal of the year and 21st of her career. “I wouldn’t say that this was our prettiest game of soccer ever. And sometimes that’s how games go. You can talk about tactics, you can talk about formations, you talk about everything, but the biggest thing was matching their intensity. Getting to the second ball, getting to the first ball. That was the shift that needed to happen,” Williams said about the team's second-half mindset. Naeher finished with six saves. She is not quite finished with soccer yet: She will continue playing next season for the Chicago Red Stars of the National Women's Soccer League. “She’s been consistent again and again. Even when she’s been questioned at times in her career, she’s always found the answer,” U.S. coach Emma Hayes said. “Not only has she been a great player in this program, but let me tell you, she’s so loved by everyone, players and staff alike. She is the best teammate you could ask for and that just speaks volumes to the person that she is.” Lily Yohannes came in as a substitute in the second half. Yohannes, who has dual citizenship, opted to play for the United States over the Netherlands last month. She plays professionally for the Dutch club Ajax. The U.S. finished the year without the trio of Mallory Swanson, Trinity Rodman and Sophia Smith, who were left off the roster for the final two matches to rest and heal nagging injuries. The U.S. is unbeaten in 15 matches under Hayes, who took over in May. AP soccer: https://apnews.com/hub/soccerClassical music offers young people a way out of Kenya’s slums

NoneKelechi Iheanacho scored for Sevilla in their 3-1 win at UE Olot in the second round of the Copa del Rey on Thursday. It is Iheanacho’s third goal in the Copa del Rey for Sevilla. The Super Eagles star netted a brace in Sevilla’s 3-0 win at Las Rozas in the first round in October. The former Leicester City forward got on the score sheet in the 73rd minute to put his side 3-0 ahead. The Spanish lower division club pulled a goal back in the 92nd minute. Iheanacho is still waiting to open his account in the La Liga after playing seven games. Share this: Twitter Facebook WhatsApp Print Email Telegram Related Got what it Takes? Predict and Win Millions Now Join NowWASHINGTON — It's DOGE time at the U.S. Capitol. Billionaire Elon Musk and fellow entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy arrived Thursday on Capitol Hill meeting with legislators behind closed doors about President-elect Donald Trump's plans to “dismantle” the federal government. Trump tapped the two business titans to head his Department of Government Efficiency , tasked with firing federal workers , cutting government programs and slashing federal regulations — all part of what he calls his "Save America" agenda for a second term in the White House. “We're going to see a lot of change around here in Washington,” said House Speaker Mike Johnson , as Musk, with a small child on his shoulders, breezed by and into the private meeting. Washington has seen this before, with ambitious efforts to reduce the size and scope of the federal government that historically have run into resistance when the public is confronted with cuts to trusted programs that millions of Americans depend on for jobs, health care, military security and everyday needs. But this time Trump is staffing his administration with battle-tested architects of sweeping proposals, some outlined in Project 2025 , to severely reduce and reshape the government. Musk and Ramaswamy said they plan to work alongside the White House's Office of Management and Budget, headed by Trump's nominee Russ Vought, a mastermind of past cuts . “DOGE has a historic opportunity for structural reductions in the federal government,” Musk and Ramaswamy wrote in an op-ed in The Wall Street Journal . “We are prepared for the onslaught.” The duo, invited for what Johnson called a “brainstorming” session as they begin this “journey” together, face a first test in private with House and Senate lawmakers — some eager to hear what they have in mind. “I am fired up to go out and do something,” said Rep. Aaron Bean, R-Fla., who joined with Rep. Pete Sessions, R-Texas, in launching what they are calling the DOGE caucus in the House, with more than 50 Republicans and two Democratic members. Bean said the DOGE caucus will unveil an email tip line where people can report wasteful spending. He also envisions a scoreboard of sorts that people can view on a website showing “how many positions we’ve cut, agencies we’ve cut, what the actual number is.” In the Senate, Sens. Joni Ernst, R-Iowa and Rick Scott, R-Fla., have launched a similar caucus. “I think that’ll be a great start to the whole process,” said Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga., who will chair a House Oversight subcommittee in the new year as part of “building the bridge between Congress and DOGE.” While neither Musk nor Ramaswamy have much public service experience, they bring track records in private business — Musk's operations have vast government contracts — and enthusiasm for Trump's agenda, having campaigned alongside him in the final stretch of the election. The world's richest man, Musk poured millions into a get-out-the-vote effort to help the former president return to the White House. He is known politically for having transformed the popular social media site formerly known as Twitter into X, a platform embraced by Trump's MAGA enthusiasts. Despite its name, the Department of Government Efficiency is neither a department nor part of the government, which frees Musk and Ramaswamy from having to go through the typical ethics and background checks required for federal employment. They said they will not be paid for their work. One good-government group has said that DOGE, as a presidential advisory panel, should be expected to adhere to traditional practices of transparency, equal representation and public input — as happened with similar advisory entities from the Reagan to the Obama administrations. The Federal Advisory Committee Act “is designed expressly for situations like this," wrote Lisa Gilbert and Robert Weissman, the co-chairs of Public Citizen in a letter to the Trump transition team. "If the government is going to turn to unelected and politically unaccountable persons to make recommendations as grand as $2 trillion in budget cuts, it must ensure those recommendations come from a balanced and transparent process not rigged to benefit insiders.” The nation's $6 trillion federal budget routinely runs a deficit, which this year ran $1.8 trillion, a historic high, according to the Congressional Budget Office. It has not been balanced since the Clinton administration more than two decades ago. Republicans generally blame what they see as exorbitant spending for the deficit, while Democrats point to tax cuts enacted under Republican presidents Trump and George W. Bush as the major driver. Receipts last year as a percentage of gross domestic product came in just below the average for the past 50 years, while outlays were equal to 23.4% of GDP, compared to the 50-year average of 21.1% Some of the biggest increases in spending last year occurred with politically popular programs that lawmakers will be reticent to touch. For example, spending on Social Security benefits went up 8%, Medicare outlays increased 9%, spending on defense went up 7% and spending on veterans health care rose 14%, according to the Congressional Budget Office. Rep. Ro Khanna, D-Calif., said he would like to see Musk testify before the House Armed Services Committee on the “bloated defense budget.” “I’d like to see Elon recommend some cuts. Let’s have him testify,” Khanna said. He said he’s open to hearing proposals on non-defense spending, but was skeptical. “If they find waste, maybe, but in terms of big numbers, I mean, no one is going to allow for cutting education funding for special needs kids and for low-income schools, or for cutting Social Security and Medicare,” Khanna said. “If they want to do that, they’re going to hand us a landslide in 2026.”

BBC Strictly Come Dancing fans fume as they hit out at 'overmarking' of starSAO PAULO (AP) — Brazil’s federal police on Thursday formally accused former President Jair Bolsonaro and 36 other people of attempting a coup to keep him in office after his defeat in the 2022 elections. Police said their sealed findings were being delivered Thursday to Brazil’s Supreme Court, which will refer them to Prosecutor-General Paulo Gonet, who decides either to formally charge Bolsonaro and put him on trial, or toss the investigation. Bolsonaro told the website Metropoles that he was waiting for his lawyer to review the accusation, reportedly about 700 pages long. But he said he would fight the case and dismissed the investigation as being the result of “creativity.” The former right-wing president has denied all claims he tried to stay in office after his narrow electoral defeat in 2022 to his rival, leftist President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. Bolsonaro has faced a series of legal threats since then. Police said in a brief statement that the Supreme Court had agreed to reveal the names of all 37 people who were accused “to avoid the dissemination of incorrect news.” Dozens of former and current Bolsonaro aides also were accused, including Gen. Walter Braga Netto, who was his running mate in the 2022 campaign; former Army commander Gen. Paulo Sérgio Nogueira de Oliveira; Valdemar Costa Neto, the chairman of Bolsonaro’s Liberal Party; and his veteran former adviser, Gen. Augusto Heleno. Other investigations produced formal accusations of Bolsonaro’s roles in smuggling diamond jewelry into Brazil without properly declaring them and in directing a subordinate to falsify his and others’ COVID-19 vaccination statuses. Bolsonaro has denied any involvement in either. Another probe found that he had abused his authority to cast doubt on the country’s voting system, and judges barred him from running again until 2030. Still, he has insisted that he will run in 2026, and many in his orbit were heartened by the recent U.S. election win of Donald Trump, despite his own swirling legal threats. But the far-reaching investigations already have weakened Bolsonaro’s status as a leader of Brazil’s right wing, said Carlos Melo, a political science professor at Insper University in Sao Paulo. “Bolsonaro is already barred from running in the 2026 elections,” Melo told the The Associated Press. “And if he is convicted he could also be jailed by then. To avoid being behind bars, he will have to convince Supreme Court justices that he has nothing to do with a plot that involves dozens of his aides. That’s a very tall order,” Melo said. A formal accusation of an attempted coup means the investigation has gathered indications of “a crime and its author,” said Eloísa Machado de Almeida, a law professor at Getulio Vargas Foundation, a university in Sao Paulo. She said she believed there was enough legal grounds for the prosecutor-general to file charges. Bolsonaro’s allies in Congress have been negotiating a bill to pardon individuals who stormed the Brazilian capital and rioted on Jan. 8, 2023 in a failed attempt to keep the former president in power. Analysts have speculated that lawmakers want to extend the legislation to cover the former president himself. However, efforts to push a broad amnesty bill may be “politically challenging” given recent attacks on the judiciary and details emerging in investigations, Machado said. On Tuesday, Federal Police arrested four military and a Federal Police officer, accused of plotting to assassinate Lula and Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes as a means to overthrow the government following the 2022 elections. And last week, a man carried out a bomb attack in the capital Brasilia . He attempted to enter the Supreme Court and threw explosives outside, killing himself.Germany is to vote in an early election on February 23 after Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s three-party governing coalition collapsed last month in a dispute over how to revitalise the country’s stagnant economy. Mr Musk’s guest opinion piece for Welt am Sonntag – a sister publication of Politico owned by the Axel Springer Group – published in German over the weekend, was the second time this month that he has supported the Alternative for Germany, or AfD. “The Alternative for Germany (AfD) is the last spark of hope for this country,” he wrote in his translated commentary. He went on to say that the far-right party “can lead the country into a future where economic prosperity, cultural integrity and technological innovation are not just wishes, but reality”. The Tesla Motors chief executive also wrote that his investment in Germany gives him the right to comment on the country’s condition. The AfD is polling strongly, but its candidate for the top job, Alice Weidel, has no realistic chance of becoming chancellor because other parties refuse to work with the far-right party. Billionaire Mr Musk, an ally of US President-elect Donald Trump, challenged in his opinion piece the party’s public image. “The portrayal of the AfD as right-wing extremist is clearly false, considering that Alice Weidel, the party’s leader, has a same-sex partner from Sri Lanka! Does that sound like Hitler to you? Please!” Mr Musk’s commentary has led to a debate in German media over the boundaries of free speech, with the paper’s own opinion editor announcing her resignation, pointedly on Mr Musk’s social media platform, X. Eva Marie Kogel wrote: “I always enjoyed leading the opinion section of WELT and WAMS. Today an article by Elon Musk appeared in Welt am Sonntag. I handed in my resignation yesterday after it went to print.” A critical article by the future editor-in-chief of the Welt group, Jan Philipp Burgard, accompanied Mr Musk’s opinion piece. “Musk’s diagnosis is correct, but his therapeutic approach, that only the AfD can save Germany, is fatally wrong,” he wrote. Responding to a request for comment from the German Press Agency, dpa, the current editor-in-chief of the Welt group, Ulf Poschardt, and Mr Burgard – who is due to take over on January 1 – said in a joint statement that the discussion over Mr Musk’s piece was “very insightful. Democracy and journalism thrive on freedom of expression.” “This will continue to determine the compass of the ‘world’ in the future. We will develop ‘Die Welt’ even more decisively as a forum for such debates,” they wrote to dpa.

ENGLEWOOD — In a documentary premiering this month, South Side artist and social justice activist Tonika Lewis Johnson joins generations of Englewood families to show how art and restoration can help remedy decades of divestment due to discriminatory housing practices. The documentary “unBlocked Englewood,” chronicling Johnson’s collaborative work to help repair homes on Englewood’s 65th and Aberdeen streets , will premiere 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at Kennedy-King College, 740 W. 63rd St. Tickets for the event are currently sold out, but some may available on a first-come, first served basis at the door. More information is available here . The two-hour event will include a panel discussion with Johnson; Ald. Stephanie Coleman (16th); reparations activist Robin Rue Simmons ; Candance Moore , the city’s first-ever chief equity officer; and Erin Harkey, former commissioner of the Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events. The “cross-sector collaboration” between the women in municipal roles enabled Johnson’s restoration work, she said. The panel will “help people understand that, even though systems seem large and difficult to disrupt, we must remind ourselves that systems are made up of people,” Johnson said. Guests will have the opportunity to meet longtime neighbors from 65th and Aberdeen, including Melvin Walls, a second-generation homeowner, and Miss Justine Mosely Stephens, a beloved neighborhood landlord. Their resilience “symbolizes the strength of Englewood’s Black community,” Johnson said. “I knew in order for the message of [unBlocked Englewood] to spread and to continue to be used for educational purposes, it had to have a life beyond my site specific project,” Johnson said. “This documentary will immerse people in the story, educate them and put a face to the direct descendants impacted by racist housing practices.” Johnson’s art and activism divulges the discriminatory housing practices preventing Black people from owning homes . Her live art installation, “Inequity for Sale,” incorporated bright yellow “landmarks” to showcase the dozens of homes sold to aspiring Black homeowners in Englewood through land sale contracts — a predatory practice that required Black families to pay exorbitant monthly payments without ever receiving ownership of the property. In 2022, she took her reparative work the extra mile with the unBlocked Englewood project. Johnson’s nonprofit, the Folded Map Project , as well as the Chicago Bungalow Association and the Englewood Arts Collective received a $250,000 grant from the city’s Toget h er We Heal Creative Place Program to help neighbors maintain and revitalize their properties. Twelve of the 25 homes on 65th and Aberdeen have received rehabilitation. Longtime homeowners — most of them older people — received critical structural repairs, such as new roofs and updated electrical and plumbing systems. Neighbors once struggling to keep their homes afloat estimate unBlocked Englewood has collectively saved them hundreds of thousands in expenses, they previously told Block Club. Johnson always wanted unBlocked Englewood “documented in a way that could assist with fundraising while telling the story of racial disparity, segregation and disinvestment,” she said. When Digifé , the award-winning production company behind projects like “Bike Vessel” and “You Don’t Know Chi,” contacted Johnson to be part of a documentary series they were working on, “it felt like a fated connection,” Johnson said. It took less than a month to film the 15-minute documentary. “A lot of people who follow my work are aware of the project, but the documentary will answer the question of its significance,” Johnson said. “It will connect the dots to help people understand that this project was created to explicitly move policy conversations forward and to help the larger public understand even more why this neighborhood is struggling with some of the issues that it has.” Attendees will leave Wednesday’s screening “informed and aware of how racist housing practices contributed to the disinvestment of Black neighborhoods and why supporting Black homeowners is important,” Johnson said. Resources will be made available immediately following the event to encourage people to participate in the project. Johnson said that although the film is not currently available for streaming, neighbors should “stay tuned” for future screenings, possibly as early as the beginning of the new year. She launched a fundraising campaign this summer alongside the Chicago Bungalow Association and the Englewood Arts Collective to continue her work of revitalizing homes and beautifying vacant lots on the block. You can support the unBlocked Englewood project here . “I want people to feel hopeful and know that change is possible,” Johnson said. “It’s important for us to remain active in wanting change. Hyperlocal organizing for policy reform is critical.” Get a free print! NoneMAGDEBURG, Germany — Mourners laid flowers near the scene of the deadly Christmas market attack on Monday while fears swirled that the rampage could deepen divisions in German society. The Johanniskirche, a church a short walk from the scene of the attack, became a central place of mourning since the suspect drove a car into the busy market on Friday evening, killing five people. A carpet of flowers covers the broad sidewalk in front of the church. Prosecutors said the number of injured rose to as many as 235 as more people have reported to hospitals and doctors, but it’s possible there was some double-counting. Authorities identified the suspect as a Saudi doctor who arrived in Germany in 2006 and received permanent residency. They say the man described himself as an ex-Muslim who was highly critical of Islam, and on social media expressed support for the far right. The interior minister of Saxony-Anhalt state, Tamara Zieschang, told lawmakers Monday that police contacted him in September 2023 and again in October this year, but didn’t comment publicly on why, German news agency dpa reported. Sir Keir Starmer has been warned by a trade union not to impose “blunt headcount targets” for the size of the Civil Service but Government sources insisted there would be no set limit, although the number “cannot keep growing”. Departments have been ordered to find 5% “efficiency savings” as part of Chancellor Rachel Reeves’ spending review, potentially putting jobs at risk. The size of the Civil Service has increased from a low of around 384,000 in mid-2016, and the Tories went into the general election promising to reduce numbers by 70,000 to fund extra defence spending. Any reduction under Labour would be more modest, with the Guardian reporting more than 10,000 jobs could be lost. A Government spokesman said: “Under our plan for change, we are making sure every part of government is delivering on working people’s priorities — delivering growth, putting more money in people’s pockets, getting the NHS back on its feet, rebuilding Britain and securing our borders in a decade of national renewal. “We are committed to making the Civil Service more efficient and effective, with bold measures to improve skills and harness new technologies.” Mike Clancy, general secretary of the Prospect trade union said: “We need a clear plan for the future of the civil service that goes beyond the blunt headcount targets that have failed in the past. “This plan needs to be developed in partnership with civil servants and their unions, and we look forward to deeper engagement with the government in the coming months.” A Government source said: “The number of civil servants cannot keep growing. “But we will not set an arbitrary cap. “The last government tried that and ended up spending loads on more expensive consultants.” The Government is already risking a confrontation with unions over proposals to limit pay rises for more than a million public servants to 2.8%, a figure only just over the projected 2.6% rate of inflation next year. Unions representing teachers, doctors and nurses have condemned the proposals. In the face of the union backlash, Downing Street said the public sector must improve productivity to justify real-terms pay increases. The Prime Minister’s official spokesman said: “It’s vital that pay awards are fair for both taxpayers and workers.” Asked whether higher pay settlements to staff would mean departmental cuts elsewhere, the spokesman said: “Real-terms pay increases must be matched by productivity gains and departments will only be able to fund pay awards above inflation over the medium-term if they become more productive and workforces become more productive.” TUC general secretary Paul Nowak said: “It’s hard to see how you address the crisis in our services without meaningful pay rises. “And it’s hard to see how services cut to the bone by 14 years of Tory government will find significant cash savings. “The Government must now engage unions and the millions of public sector workers we represent in a serious conversation about public service reform and delivery.”

Elon Musk, the world’s wealthiest individual, has seen his fortune soar to an unprecedented $347.8 billion following a dramatic post-election rally in Tesla’s share price. The surge, reported by the Bloomberg Billionaire Index, surpasses Musk’s previous net worth record of $340 billion set in November 2021, further placing his position atop the billionaire rankings. Tesla’s stock has been on an upswing since the November 5 election, gaining 40% amid investor optimism about Musk’s perceived influence in the incoming Trump administration. Related Stories Jeff Bezos’ ex wife, MacKenzie Scott sells $8B in Amazon shares for charitable causes Bernard Arnault sues Elon Musk’s X over alleged unpaid content use Shares climbed 3.8% on Friday alone, reflecting market expectations that regulatory rollbacks could benefit Tesla and its ecosystem of innovative ventures. As Tesla’s largest shareholder, Musk’s wealth has increased by $83 billion in less than three weeks, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index. Musk’s alignment with President-elect Donald Trump has amplified his visibility and influence. Alongside entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy, Musk is set to oversee the newly proposed Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) an initiative named after the popular cryptocurrency. The appointment signals Musk’s growing integration into political and economic policymaking under the Trump administration. Beyond Tesla, Musk’s artificial intelligence venture, xAI, saw its valuation more than double this week, reaching $50 billion after a significant funding round. This milestone reflects the broader market confidence in Musk’s diversified portfolio, which spans sectors from space exploration to social media. Musk’s financial ascent further widens the gap between himself and his peers. He now holds a commanding $100 billion lead over Jeff Bezos, the Amazon founder, and an $80 billion edge over Larry Ellison, the Oracle chairman. Ellison, the world’s second-richest individual, has a net worth of $235 billion. The billionaire rankings, often characterized by rapid shifts, now firmly favour Musk as his ventures dominate industries ranging from electric vehicles to artificial intelligence and aerospace. While Tesla and SpaceX remain the cornerstone of his wealth, his stakes in Neuralink, X (formerly Twitter), and the Boring Company continue to bolster his influence in emerging technologies. Musk’s extraordinary financial trajectory shows his company’s moving role in driving technological innovation and market dynamics. With Tesla benefitting from bullish sentiment and xAI’s valuation surging, analysts suggest his wealth could scale even greater heights. As markets adjust to the Trump administration’s policy priorities, Musk’s fortunes appear poised for continued growth. This remarkable financial windfall highlights the symbiotic relationship between Musk’s business acumen and evolving political landscapes, solidifying his standing as the face of 21st-century innovation and wealth.Vivek Ramaswamy blames 90s sitcoms for tech companies hiring smarter immigrant workersCNOOC Limited and 80883 announces that Huizhou 26-6 Oilfield Development Project has commenced production. The Arizona Cardinals are 6-6 through 12 games, which makes them an average football team. That's much better than the previous two years, which both ended with just four wins. But after two straight frustrating losses, it's not providing much consolation for a franchise that feels as though it should be much better. The latest setback came on Sunday, when the Minnesota Vikings rallied to beat the Cardinals 23-22 . Arizona never trailed until Sam Darnold threw a 5-yard touchdown pass with 1:18 remaining that proved to be the winning score. It was a mistake-filled performance for the Cardinals, who racked up 10 penalties for 96 yards. That's a big reason they had to settle for five field goals and scored just one touchdown. The Cardinals were leading 19-16 in the fourth quarter and had first-and-goal at the Vikings 5, but Tip Reiman was called for a false start and then quarterback Kyler Murray was called for intentional grounding . The Cardinals kicked a field goal for a 22-16 lead, giving the Vikings the chance they needed to drive for the winning score. Murray threw two interceptions in the fourth quarter. “I thought we moved the ball well,” Murray said. “Again, it just comes down to not scoring touchdowns. Get down there and kick field goals and penalties bite us. It’s bad — it’s bad football.” The loss knocked the Cardinals out of first place in the NFC West, though they're still in decent playoff position. A pivotal game against the division-rival Seahawks looms on Sunday. Second-year coach Jonathan Gannon acknowledged the frustration of Sunday's loss, but said they've got to rebound quickly. “They’re disappointed and down, but it’s the NFL,” Gannon said. “They’ve got to put all their energy and focus into tomorrow.” What’s working Arizona's defense blamed itself for not coming up with a stop on the Vikings' winning drive, but the unit played exceptionally well for most of the afternoon. Mack Wilson and L.J. Collier both had two sacks and the Cardinals held Minnesota to just 273 total yards. For a group that looked as if it might be the team's weakness this season, it was another rock solid performance. What needs help The Cardinals aren't a good enough football team to overcome 10 penalties and get a win — particularly on the road. Reiman had a rough day, getting called for three false starts. His false start on the next-to-last offensive drive — coupled with Murray's intentional grounding penalty — proved to be extremely costly. “That was brutal,” Gannon said. “Just got to figure out ways to punch the ball in for touchdowns there, not field goals.” Stock up Rookie Marvin Harrison Jr. had five catches for 60 yards, including an impressive touchdown catch that put the Cardinals up 19-6. It was Harrison's seventh TD reception of the season. The No. 4 overall pick has been a little inconsistent in his first year, but there's little doubt he's a difference-maker for the offense. He's still got a chance to reach 1,000 yards receiving this season if he averages about 80 yards receiving over the final five games. Considering his talent, that's certainly possible. Stock down Gannon was second-guessed for his decision to kick a field goal late in the fourth quarter instead of trying for a touchdown at the Vikings 4 with 3:29 left. Chad Ryland made the 23-yard chip shot for a 22-16 lead, but the Vikings drove the field on the ensuing possession for the winning score. “I trust JG,” Murray said. “I see both sides. Go up six and make them score; trust the defense to go get a stop. Go for it, you don’t get it, they’ve still got to go down and score. If you do get it, you probably put the game away.” Said Gannon: "Yeah, I mean there’s thought about it. Just wanted to go up more than a field goal there. Definitely a decision point that we talked about. So be it.” Injuries The Cardinals came out of the game fairly healthy. Rookie DL Darius Robinson — the No. 27 overall pick — made his NFL debut against the Vikings after missing the first 11 games due to a calf injury. Key number 1,074 — Running back James Conner's total yards from the line of scrimmage this season, including 773 on the ground and 301 in the passing game. Next steps The Cardinals return home for a game against the Seahawks on Sunday. ___ AP NFL: https://apnews.com/hub/nfl David Brandt, The Associated Press

By Jonathan Stempel (Reuters) -A federal judge on Friday rejected the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission's request to sanction Elon Musk after he failed to appear for court-ordered testimony for the regulator's probe into his $44 billion takeover of Twitter. U.S. District Judge Jacqueline Scott Corley in San Francisco said sanctions over Musk's Sept. 10 absence were unnecessary, after the world's richest person testified on Oct. 3 and agreed to pay the SEC's $2,923 of travel costs. "Because the present circumstances forestall any occasion for meaningful relief that the court could grant, the SEC's request is moot," Corley wrote. The SEC had sought a declaration that Musk violated a May 31 court order to provide testimony. It said having only to repay travel costs would not deter many other people from ignoring court orders, "much less someone of Musk's extraordinary means." Musk said he complied with the order by testifying on Oct. 3. He is worth $321.7 billion according to Forbes magazine. The SEC did not immediately respond to a request for comment after business hours. Lawyers for Musk did not immediately respond to similar requests. Musk, whose businesses include electric car maker Tesla and rocket company SpaceX and who is the world's richest person, went to Florida's Cape Canaveral on Sept. 10 to oversee the launch of SpaceX's Polaris Dawn mission. The SEC is investigating whether Musk violated securities laws in early 2022 by waiting at least 10 days too long to disclose he had begun accumulating Twitter stock. Critics and some investors have said this let him buy shares cheaply before he eventually disclosed a 9.2% Twitter stake, and shortly thereafter offered to buy the whole company. In July, Musk said he misunderstood SEC disclosure rules and that "all indications" suggested he made a "mistake." The SEC also sued Musk in 2018 over his Twitter posts about taking Tesla private. He settled that lawsuit by paying a $20 million fine, agreeing to let Tesla lawyers review some posts in advance and stepping down as Tesla's chairman. The case is SEC v Musk, U.S. District Court, Northern District of California, No. 23-mc-80253. Ravens’ John Harbaugh gives cryptic response about WR Diontae Johnson’s futureBOSTON — Forty years ago, Heisman Trophy winner Doug Flutie rolled to his right and threw a pass that has become one of college football’s most iconic moments. With Boston College trailing defending champion Miami, Flutie threw the Hail Mary and found receiver Gerard Phalen , who made the grab while falling into the end zone behind a pair of defenders for a game-winning 48-yard TD. Flutie and many of his 1984 teammates were honored on the field during BC’s 41-21 victory over North Carolina before the second quarter on Saturday afternoon, the anniversary of the Eagles’ Miracle in Miami. “There’s no way its been 40 years,” Flutie told The Associated Press on the sideline a few minutes before he walked out with some of his former teammates to be recognized after a video of The Play was shown on the scoreboards. It’s a moment and highlight that’s not only played throughout decades of BC students and fans, but around the college football world. “What is really so humbling is that the kids 40 years later are wearing 22 jerseys, still,” Flutie said of his old number. “That amazes me.” That game was played on national TV the Friday after Thanksgiving. The ironic thing is it was originally scheduled for earlier in the season before CBS paid Rutgers to move its game against Miami, thus setting up the BC-Miami post-holiday matchup. “It shows you how random some things are, that the game was moved,” Flutie said. “The game got moved to the Friday after Thanksgiving, which was the most watched game of the year. We both end up being nationally ranked and up there. All those things lent to how big the game itself was, and made the pass and the catch that much more relevant and remembered because so many people were watching.” There’s a statue of Flutie winding up to make The Pass outside the north gates at Alumni Stadium. Fans and visitors can often be seen taking photos there. “In casual conversation, it comes up every day,” Flutie said, when asked how many times people bring it up. “It brings a smile to my face every time we talk about it.” A week after the game-ending Flutie pass, the Eagles beat Holy Cross and before he flew off to New York to accept the Heisman. They went on to win the 49th Cotton Bowl on New Year’s Day. “Forty years seem almost like incomprehensible,” said Phalen, also standing on the sideline a few minutes after the game started. “I always say to Doug: ‘Thank God for social media. It’s kept it alive for us.”’ Earlier this week, current BC coach Bill O’Brien, 55, was asked if he remembered where he was 40 years ago. “We were eating Thanksgiving leftovers in my family room,” he said. “My mom was saying a Rosary in the kitchen because she didn’t like Miami and wanted BC to win. My dad, my brother and I were watching the game. “It was unbelievable,” he said. “Everybody remembers where they were for the Hail Mary, Flutie pass.” Get poll alerts and updates on the AP Top 25 throughout the season. https www 777pub com download KANSAS CITY, Mo. — As his team’s frantic last play from scrimmage was unfolding against the Kansas City Chiefs on Friday, Raiders coach Antonio Pierce was under the impression officials had called the play dead. “We heard a whistle on our sideline,” Pierce said Saturday, less than 24 hours after the Raiders’ gut-wrenching 19-17 loss. Had Pierce’s initial understanding of the situation held up, the fumbled shotgun snap between Raiders center Jackson Powers-Johnson and quarterback Aidan O’Connell would have been moot. The Raiders would have gotten another chance to run a third-down play against the Chiefs. Or, just brought on kicker Daniel Carlson to attempt a game-winning field goal from 54 yards out. But after the officials huddled, they cited the Raiders (2-10) for an illegal shift rather than an illegal procedure. The Chiefs (11-1) immediately declined the penalty, which meant the fumble Nick Bolton recovered stood — as did one of the most improbable Raiders losses in years. Pierce, who said he would not have done anything differently tactically on the final play, said the Raiders will send a complaint to the NFL, as they typically do after most games when concerns are raised. The NFL, according to Pierce, typically responds within 24 to 36 hours. “We’ll read it and learn from it,” Pierce said. Big pass rush The Raiders registered a season-high four sacks against Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes on Friday, the most they have had since Week 18 last year against the Denver Broncos. It was the 30th straight game the Raiders have recorded at least one sack. The key? Getting help alongside Maxx Crosby, who had one sack, two tackles for loss and four of the Raiders’ 12 quarterback hits. K’Lavon Chaisson added three tackles, 1 1/2 sacks, one tackle for loss and three quarterback hits. Zach Carter added two tackles and a sack, and Adam Butler had six tackles and a half-sack. Pierce was impressed. “We just talked about being relentless. No different than every year we play Kansas City with Patrick,” Pierce said. “It takes everybody. It can’t be the Maxx Crosby show.” Injuries to Malcolm Koonce and Christian Wilkins have reduced what was expected to be a dominant Raiders pass rush. But on Friday, the Raiders finally put together a solid group effort. “Just the overall rush coordination, rush plan. The strain, the finish,” Pierce said. “I thought they all had some great opportunities, some great rushes where we were winning.” O’Connell’s huge day Playing in his first game after missing over a month with a fractured right thumb, Raiders quarterback Aidan O’Connell threw for 340 yards and two touchdowns. The last time a Raiders quarterback threw for more than 340 yards without an interception was Derek Carr in 2021. O’Connell’s 116.4 passer rating on 35 pass attempts was the best rating for a Raiders quarterback with that many throws since Carr in 2021. O’Connell’s four games with a passer rating of 100 or better over his first 15 starts is the most in franchise history. O’Connell said he would have traded it all for a win. “It’s been a hard season,” O’Connell said. “I feel really bad for the guys who work so hard. I’ve been out for five weeks, and it’s been hard to watch because I know how hard the guys work throughout the week. It’s tough to stomach right now. But again, I couldn’t be more proud of our coaching staff and our players. It was a great game except for the last play.” ©2024 Las Vegas Review-Journal. Visit reviewjournal.com. . Biden's broken promise on pardoning his son Hunter is raising new questions about his legacy WASHINGTON (AP) — President Joe Biden’s decision to go back on his word and pardon his son Hunter wasn't all that surprising to those who are familiar with the president's devotion to his family. But by choosing to put his family first, the 82-year-old president has raised new questions about his legacy. Biden has held himself up as placing his respect for the American judicial system and rule of law over his own personal concerns. It was part of an effort to draw a deliberate contrast with Republican Donald Trump. Now, both his broken promise and his act of clemency are a political lightning rod. (AP) — Louisiana's Republican-controlled Legislature approved a constitutional amendment on Friday that would allow them to expand the number of crimes in which juveniles between 14 and 16 years old could be tried as adults. The state's constitution currently outlines 15 violent juvenile offenses, such as rape, murder and armed robbery, which prosecutors can handle in adult courts. Any changes to that list of crimes must be approved by voters. But the constitutional amendment sponsored by Republican Sen. Heather Cloud — which require voter approval in March 29 elections to take effect — would allow legislators the power by a two-thirds vote to decide what juvenile crimes can be transferred to adult courts. It's part of a wider push in Louisiana, which already has the second-highest incarceration rate in the country behind Mississippi, to implement tough-on-crime policies under Republican Gov. Jeff Landry. Since taking office in January, Landry has passed laws to treat 17-year-olds as adults in the criminal justice system, largely eliminate parole and allow surgical castration as punishment for certain sex crimes against children. Supporters of the measure to make it easier to expand prosecution of juveniles as adults — backed only by Republican legislators — say it will grant lawmakers more flexibility to give prosecutors the tools they need to increase public safety. Vesting authority in the constitution "has hamstringed Louisiana from being able to address changes in an ever-changing juvenile crime landscape,” Cloud said on the Senate floor on Nov. 14. Opponents, including Democrats, social workers and criminal justice reform advocates, said specific offenses routing juveniles to adult courts should remain part of the constitution to keep this power in the hands of voters. “We’re taking the people’s voice away over how children should be treated in this state,” Democratic Sen. Katrina Jackson-Andrews said. Critics also argue the changes fail to confront the root causes of juvenile crime, namely poverty and underinvestment in education. Transferring juveniles into adult court would also prevent them from accessing age-appropriate rehabilitative services, criminal justice reform advocates and social workers testified during the legislative session. “I can view this in no other way than just giving up on children,” Democratic Sen. Royce Duplessis said on the Senate floor. “We’re going to say we’re just going to treat them all as adults, and we’re not going to do our part as a society, as policymakers, to address what’s really failing — this is not going to do a single thing to deter crime." Some lawmakers said that juveniles committing violent crimes had been deprived of care from a young age and were past the point of rehabilitation, blaming their families as opposed to societal factors. “Some of these kids are already lost when they’re 2 years old,” said Republican Rep. Tony Bacala in a House committee hearing. Unless they are transferred to an adult court, young people tried in juvenile court can only be imprisoned until age 21 according to state law. The effect of the proposed constitutional change will be to open the door for Republican lawmakers to give prosecutors the power to hand down lengthy prison sentences to 14- to 16-year-olds, including for less severe crimes, said Bruce Reilly, deputy director of the Louisiana-based criminal justice reform advocacy group Voice of the Experienced. The Louisiana District Attorneys Association and the Louisiana Sheriffs' Association said they supported the measure. But New Orleans Sheriff Susan Hutson said she was concerned the measure would “almost certainly further strain our already short staff” in the jail system. Federal law still considers 17-year-olds and younger as juveniles and requires them to be kept separate from adult inmates. District Attorney Tony Clayton, who represents West Baton Rouge and two other parishes, said he would not try a juvenile as an adult for having “marijuana in his wallet,” but for violent crimes. Violent crimes are on the decline nationwide according to the latest data from FBI’s Uniform Crime Reporting. Since mid-2023, most violent crime has also been down in New Orleans, which in 2022 had the highest homicide rate among large cities nationwide. Conservative lawmakers argued this was the result of tough-on-crime penalties passed this year and Republican Gov. Jeff Landry's decision to send state troops to New Orleans. Lawmakers supporting the amendment have focused on high-profile violent crimes by juveniles, such as a deadly New Orleans carjacking case committed by teenagers — who were charged as adults — in which an elderly woman was beaten and dragged to her death. Louisiana is one of five states that classifies 17-year-olds as adults in the criminal justice system, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures. Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield said in a statement that its decision to backpedal resulted from “significant widespread misinformation” about the policy. “To be clear, it never was and never will be the policy of Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield to not pay for medically necessary anesthesia services,” the statement said. “The proposed update to the policy was only designed to clarify the appropriateness of anesthesia consistent with well-established clinical guidelines.” Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield would have used “physician work time values,” which is published by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, as the metric for anesthesia limits; maternity patients and patients under the age of 22 were exempt. But Dr. Jonathan Gal, economics committee chair of the American Society for Anesthesiologists, said it’s unclear how CMS derives those values. In mid-November, the American Society for Anesthesiologists called on Anthem to “reverse the proposal immediately,” saying in a news release that the policy would have taken effect in February in New York, Connecticut and Missouri. It’s not clear how many states in total would have been affected, as notices also were posted in Virginia and Colorado . The insurance giant’s policy change came one day after the CEO of UnitedHealthcare , another major insurance company, was shot and killed in New York City.

WASHINGTON — Special counsel Jack Smith moved to abandon two criminal cases against Donald Trump on Monday, acknowledging that Trump’s return to the White House will preclude attempts to federally prosecute him for retaining classified documents or trying to overturn his 2020 election defeat. The decision was inevitable, since longstanding Justice Department policy says sitting presidents cannot face criminal prosecution. Yet it was still a momentous finale to an unprecedented chapter in political and law enforcement history, as federal officials attempted to hold a former president accountable while he ran for another term. In court filings, Smith’s team emphasized that the move to abandon their prosecutions was not a reflection of the merit of the cases but a recognition of the legal shield that surrounds any commander in chief. “That prohibition is categorical and does not turn on the gravity of the crimes charged, the strength of the Government’s proof, or the merits of the prosecution, which the Government stands fully behind,” the prosecutors wrote in one of their filings. Smith’s team said it left intact charges against two co-defendants in the classified documents case — Trump valet Walt Nauta and Mar-a-Lago property manager Carlos De Oliveira. The election case brought last year was once seen as one of the most serious legal threats facing Trump as he tried to reclaim the White House. He was indicted for plotting to overturn his defeat to Joe Biden in 2020, an effort that climaxed with his supporters’ violent attack on the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021. The separate case involving classified documents was widely seen as legally clear cut, especially because the conduct in question occurred after Trump left the White House and lost the powers of the presidency. GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) — After losing to San Francisco in the playoffs three of the last five seasons, the Green Bay Packers wouldn’t mind seeing the 49ers get left out of the postseason entirely. The Packers (7-3) could damage San Francisco’s playoff hopes Sunday by beating the 49ers at Lambeau Field. San Francisco (5-5) dropped to .500 after losing at home to the Seattle Seahawks, though the 49ers remain just a game behind the Arizona Cardinals in the NFC West. “I think we’re motivated to keep winning more than anything,” Packers center Josh Myers said. “Obviously, they have knocked us out quite a bit. There’s that extra motivation behind it, but at this point, we’re just trying to churn out wins.” The 49ers will be playing this game without starting quarterback Brock Purdy, who injured his right shoulder in the Seahawks game. Although an MRI showed no structural damage, Purdy's shoulder didn't improve as the week wore on. Brandon Allen will start in Purdy's place. Green Bay is third in the NFC North and two games behind the Detroit Lions, but the Packers appear on track to at least earn a wild-card playoff berth. History suggests their path to a potential Super Bowl would get much clearer if the 49ers aren’t standing in their way. The 49ers trailed 21-14 in the fourth quarter before rallying to beat the Packers 24-21 in the divisional playoffs last year on Christian McCaffrey’s 6-yard touchdown run with 1:07 left. Now, it’s the 49ers who are struggling to protect late leads, as they’ve blown fourth-quarter advantages in three games against divisional opponents. “You could look at, ‘Hey, we’re three possessions away from being 8-2,’ but you can’t really live like that,” 49ers tight end George Kittle said. “Those are the mistakes that we’ve made to be 5-5. It’s not exactly where we want to be. It is frustrating. The nice thing is we have seven games left to go out there and play Niners football and take advantage of those opportunities.” Green Bay’s recent history of playoff frustration against the 49ers also includes a 13-10 loss at Lambeau Field in the 2021 divisional playoffs and a 37-20 road defeat in the 2019 NFC championship game. Even the Packers players who weren’t around for last season’s playoff loss realize what this game means. “I think one of the first meetings that I was in here, we had a conversation about the Niners beating us,” said Green Bay safety Xavier McKinney, who joined the Packers this season. “So I understand how important it is, and we all do.” Both teams must figure out how to convert red-zone opportunities into touchdowns. The 49ers are scoring touchdowns on just 48.8% of their drives inside an opponent’s 20-yard line to rank 27th in the NFL. The Packers are slightly worse in that regard, scoring touchdowns on 48.7% of their red-zone possessions to rank 28th. In their 20-19 victory at Chicago on Sunday, Green Bay drove to the Bears 5 without scoring on two separate series. Purdy isn't the only notable player who won't be participating in Sunday's game. San Francisco won't have four-time Pro Bowl edge rusher Nick Bosa available after he hurt his left hip and oblique against the Seahawks. Packers cornerback Jaire Alexander (knee) and linebacker Edgerrin Cooper (hamstring) also have been ruled out. Kittle expects to play for the 49ers on Sunday after missing the Seahawks game with a hamstring injury. 49ers left tackle Trent Williams (ankle) is questionable. Green Bay’s defense feasted on turnovers the first part of the season, but hasn’t been as effective in getting those takeaways lately. The Packers have 19 takeaways – already exceeding their 2023 total – but haven’t forced any turnovers in their last two games. 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan hasn’t eased McCaffrey back into the lineup in his return after missing the first eight games with Achilles tendinitis. McCaffrey has played 91% of the 49ers’ offensive snaps the past two weeks. Jordan Mason, who rushed for 685 yards during McCaffrey’s absence, has just five snaps on offense the last two games. Shanahan said he’d like to get Mason more opportunities, but it’s hard to take McCaffrey off the field. Green Bay nearly lost to the Bears because of its third-down struggles on both sides of the ball. The Packers were 1 of 5 on third-down opportunities, while the Bears went 9 of 16. The Packers’ defense could have a tough time correcting that problem against San Francisco, which has converted 45.4% of its third-down situations to rank fourth in the league. Penelope Hegseth joins 'Fox & Friends' to defend her son's character and discuss his nomination by President-elect Trump to be defense secretary. President-elect Donald Trump's nominee to head the Department of Defense, Pete Hegseth, spent another day courting support from Republican senators on Capitol Hill and taking a few questions from reporters while he was at it. The military vet turned " Fox & Friends" co-host met with senators Rick Scott, R-Fla.; Cindy Hyde-Smith, R-Miss; Mike Rounds, R-S.D.; Ron Johnson, R-Wis.; Tom Cotton, R-Ark.; and Sen.-elect Jim Banks, R-Ind., Thursday. The meetings followed others Hegseth held earlier in the week with GOP senators, including Sen. Roger Wicker, R-Miss., who will be the next chair of the Senate Armed Services Committee, and incoming Senate Majority Leader John Thune, R-S.D. Hegseth has been facing a mountain of criticism with accusations against him ranging from fiscal mismanagement to alcoholism to sexual misconduct. Nevertheless, Hegseth said Thursday while walking between meetings on Capitol Hill that Trump supports him "fully." PAUL — A decision on whether to reissue a permit to mine for the company vying to open Minnesota's first copper-nickel mine is on hold after the company behind it said it is studying potential changes to the controversial project's design. Gary Wilson, Central Region director of the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, said in a letter Monday he was pausing his review of whether to accept a judge's November 2023 recommendation that the DNR deny the project’s permit to mine in light of NewRange Copper Nickel's August announcement that it was studying whether to change several aspects of its plan. ADVERTISEMENT NewRange's plan for the storage of tailings — crushed-up rock leftover after removing copper, nickel, cobalt and other metals — did not meet the state law, the judge wrote last year, because lining the basin with bentonite and mixing it into the tailings would not ensure the slurry of crushed-up waste rock became nonreactive and wouldn't prevent water from flowing over or through the waste upon closure. Wilson said the pause, or stay, in his review will last until Aug.14, a year after the company announced it would spend a year studying the potential changes. He added that the stay could be lifted early if the company sticks to the existing design outlined in the permit to mine. PolyMet was a predecessor to NewRange and the project is still referred to as PolyMet in proceedings. Its Northmet project would use the old Erie Mining Co./LTV Steel Corp. buildings and tailings basin near Hoyt Lakes to process the ore extracted from an open-pit mine. "The stay will prevent significant expenditure of time and resources for a matter that may become moot if PolyMet amends or withdraws its permit application, as well as avoid the issuance of an advisory opinion," Wilson wrote in the letter Monday. In issuing a stay, Wilson sided with a Sept. 30 request by the DNR urging urged him to pause the proceedings by citing "clear, public evidence that PolyMet may soon make changes that would render this proceeding moot by removing the factual dispute over the effectiveness of the bentonite amendment, which was the sole reason for the current contested case hearing." Wilson rejected a request by environmental groups and the Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa to dismiss the proceeding or reject the permit to mine application altogether. Environmental groups and Indigenous bands have long opposed the NorthMet project, fearing pollution from the mine and tailings could taint nearby waterways, the St. Louis River and Lake Superior. ADVERTISEMENT In a statement, JT Haines, Northeastern Minnesota program director at the Minnesota Center for Environmental Advocacy, one of the groups opposed to the project, said Monday's decision was "important." “Rather than continuing to waste scarce resources and everybody’s time, this decision recognizes that PolyMet owes Minnesotans transparency and honesty," Haines said. "Either PolyMet can confirm that their plan is to continue to push a dangerous and illegal mine plan, or they can go back to the drawing board.” NewRange, which argued Wilson did not have the authority to issue a stay, said in a statement Monday that it was "unfortunate" that the DNR paused the case and declined, for now, to decide on the judge's recommendation. "While NewRange’s previously announced studies may alter some aspects of the NorthMet Project, there are elements of the recommendation that could affect the design of any nonferrous tailings facility in Minnesota," said NewRange spokesperson Bruce Richardson. "The DNR has an obligation to determine and communicate what its rules mean. "While the NewRange studies will continue, today’s decision has unnecessarily extended the current uncertainty over the regulation of these facilities." NewRange's predecessor, PolyMet, began the environmental review and permitting process in 2004, and it received key state permits in 2018 before numerous legal challenges mounted. But 20 years after it began the permitting process, the company said it was considering changes to its plan, even though it stood by its existing plan. Those potential changes include: ADVERTISEMENT Last year, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers revoked the project's federal discharge permit because it said it did not ensure compliance with the standards of the downstream Fond du Lac Band. The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency is revisiting the project's water permit after a court said it did not adequately consider federal regulator concerns that it may not comply with the Clean Water Act.

The S&P 500 slipped less than 0.1% Thursday, its first loss after three straight gains. The Dow Jones Industrial Average added 0.1%, and the Nasdaq composite fell 0.1%. Free-for-All is usually the perfect game mode to warm up or jump in for a quick match, but an annoying glitch has gone unnoticed and is impacting overall enjoyment. In 2003, the first Call of Duty title included Free-for-All as one of its core multiplayer game modes. Since then, every title has also featured the classic mode, where eight players race to get 30 kills first. There have been a few variations over the game mode’s 20-year-plus history, but there is little reason to re-write a tried-and-true formula that already works. However, as modern CoD titles have innovated and introduced more modes, including wacky limited-time modes, FFA took a back seat to other, more exciting offerings. Despite that, FFA still has many passionate fans who prefer the mode over everything else. So, those same players feel disrespected by the devs for letting a game-breaking glitch slip right under their noses for over a month. Is Free-for-All broken in Black Ops 6? On November 28, a BO6 player posted a clip showing that they were the first one to reach 30 eliminations and were first on the leaderboard, but the game gave them a defeat, and they didn’t appear anywhere on the final top-three podium. A few weeks later, on December 16, CoD YouTuber notblametruth claimed that this glitch had been present since launch and also shared an image of the scoreboard bug. Free For All–a staple mode in FPS since the 1990s–has been completely broken in Black Ops 6 since launch. A now trillion dollar company developed this game over four years. Keep bleeding players champs. pic.twitter.com/5E9ULcRhmB Treyarch has yet to issue a response to this glitch, and players are fed up that the minor glitch has taken so long to clear up. Other users in the comment section took the chance to share screenshots of the glitch and expressed frustration over the lack of communication or knowledge of its existence. Related: On December 23, Treyarch and Raven Software departed for their holiday break, so this update won’t be addressed until the start of the new year at the earliest. But since it’s already been around for so long, there isn’t any guarantee as to when that fix will come.

The Thai beer market is expected to grow at a rate surpassing the country's projected GDP growth in 2025, supported by government stimulus measures, a robust tourism sector and a wave of new product launches, says Chang International. The National Economic and Social Development Council projects Thailand's economy to grow by between 2.3% and 3.3% in 2025, with a midpoint estimate of 2.8%. Thai beer consumption is anticipated to exceed 2 billion litres next year, said Songwit Sritham, chief executive of Thailand beer business at Chang International Co Ltd. He said the mainstream beer segment, priced from 55-60 baht per 490-millilitre can, accounts for 60-70% of total market value. "For the mass market, we expect Thai mainstream beer sales to grow slightly faster than the country's GDP growth," said Mr Songwit. The company also anticipates its mass beer business will outpace industry growth. The "mainstream plus" segment, with an average price of more than 60 baht per bottle, accounts for about 20% of the market. It is projected to achieve double-digit growth next year, according to Chang. The company knows consumers have different preferences and are shifting towards more premium beer options, driving the robust growth of the mainstream plus segment, while the mainstream segment has not grown dramatically. He said mainstream plus represents a single-digit proportion of the company's portfolio, but Chang wants to expand this share. "We want to grow more than the market and increase the proportion of this segment in our portfolio," said Mr Songwit, without specifying a timeline. The economy beer segment, priced cheaper than the mainstream segment, continues to decline, accounting for less than 5% of the total market, compared with 10% 15 years ago. The remaining market share is held by foreign beer or speciality beer. To tap the premium trend, the company introduced "Chang Unpasteurized Screw-top Aluminum Bottle" two years ago in select markets such as Chiang Mai. Starting Dec 19, Chang plans to begin distributing this product at 10,000 branches of 7-Eleven convenience stores nationwide.Arizona State football will likely lean heavily on its explosive running back in the on Saturday against Iowa State. If the No. 13 (10-2, 7-2 Big 12) are able to beat the No. 16 Cyclones (10-2, 7-2) and make the they'll almost certainly need a big performance from The first-team All-Big 12 running back in 2024 has been one of the top rushers in college football this season, boasting 1,398 rushing yards with 17 touchdowns on 247 carries. Skattebo has also been one of the most impressive receivers out of the backfield this season, with 35 receptions for 468 yards with two touchdowns. The 5-foot-1, 215-pound running back is the only player nationally with over 1,000 yards rushing and over 400 yards receiving so far in 2024. Skattebo has played a huge role in returning Arizona State to prominence, and he'll undoubtedly play a role in helping it potentially reach the CFP. Here's everything to know about Skattebo ahead of Saturday's Big 12 Championship: Skattebo is Arizona State's senior running back, who was a first-team All-Big 12 selection this season and one of the most productive offensive players nationally in 2024. The fourth-year running back has 1,398 rushing yards and 17 touchdowns on 247 carries this season, along with 35 receptions for 468 yards with two touchdowns, despite missing a game during the slate. Skattebo ranks second among all players in all-purpose yards per game, His mark only trails Boise State's Ashton Jeanty, one of the top contenders for the Heisman Trophy. Skattebo was also solid in his first season with the Sun Devils in 2023, but he took his game to a new level in 2024 as Arizona State also improved its win total by seven games. He rushed 164 times for 783 yards with nine touchdowns a season ago in coach Kenny Dillingham's first season. The Rio Linda, California, native transferred to Arizona State after two seasons at FCS Sacramento State, where he was named the Big Sky Offensive Player of the Year in 2022 after rushing for 1,372 yards with seven touchdowns, along with 31 receptions for 371 yards with a touchdown. Skattebo, who attended the hometown school, finished the season 12-1 with a 66-63 loss in the FCS quarterfinals to Cam Ward and Incarnate Word. Skattebo was coached by Troy Taylor, who's now the head coach at Stanford, at Sacramento State. The 5-foot-11, 215-pound running back appeared to have his eyes set on the Sun Devils after entering the transfer portal, as he committed to the Sun Devils five days after announcing his entry. The potential NFL draft pick appeared to make the right decision. Skattebo was underrecruited out of high school, ranked as a 0-star recruit with his only reported offers to William & Mary and Sacramento State, where he ultimately attended. His stock raised a bit as a transfer portal prospect, ranked as a 3-star option and the No. 31 running back in the 2023 cycle, It's safe to say Dillingham struck gold with Skattebo in the transfer portal. Skattebo is also in elite company due to his pass-catching prowess, as he became one of only 15 running backs since 1996 to rush and receive for over 100 yards in the same game. He was also named a semifinalist for the Doak Walker Award, becoming only the second player in Arizona State history to achieve the feat that rewards the top running back in college football. Here are Skattebo's year-by-year college stats: 57 carries for 520 yards with six touchdowns; 12 receptions for 124 yards with a touchdown 195 carries for 1,372 yards with seven touchdowns; 31 receptions for 371 yards with three touchdowns 164 carries for 783 yards with nine touchdowns; 24 receptions for 286 yards with a touchdown 247 carries for 1,398 yards with 17 touchdowns; 35 receptions for 468 yards with two touchdowns Here's a look at Skattebo's as a high school recruit and transfer portal prospect: 0-star, not ranked 3-star, No. 351 overall and No. 31 running back

Stephanie Armour, Julie Rovner | (TNS) KFF Health News Many of President-elect Donald Trump’s candidates for federal health agencies have promoted policies and goals that put them at odds with one another or with Trump’s choice to run the Department of Health and Human Services, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., setting the stage for internal friction over public health initiatives. The divide pits Trump picks who adhere to more traditional and orthodox science, such as the long-held, scientifically supported findings that vaccines are safe, against often unsubstantiated views advanced by Kennedy and other selections who have claimed vaccines are linked with autism. The Trump transition team and the designated nominees mentioned in this article did not respond to requests for comment. It’s a potential “team of opponents” at the government’s health agencies, said Michael Cannon, director of health policy studies at the Cato Institute, a libertarian policy organization. Kennedy, he said, is known for rejecting opposing views when confronted with science. “The heads of the FDA and NIH will be spending all their time explaining to their boss what a confidence interval is,” Cannon said, referring to a statistical term used in medical studies. Those whose views prevail will have significant power in shaping policy, from who is appointed to sit on federal vaccine advisory committees to federal authorization for COVID vaccines to restrictions on abortion medications. If confirmed as HHS secretary, Kennedy is expected to set much of the agenda. “If President Trump’s nomination of RFK Jr. to be secretary is confirmed, if you don’t subscribe to his views, it will be very hard to rise in that department,” said Amesh Adalja, an infectious disease specialist and senior scholar at the Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security. “They will need to suppress their views to fit with RFK Jr’s. In this administration, and any administration, independent public disagreement isn’t welcome.” Kennedy is chair of Children’s Health Defense , an anti-vaccine nonprofit. He has vowed to curb the country’s appetite for ultra-processed food and its incidence of chronic disease. He helped select Trump’s choices to lead the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Food and Drug Administration, and the National Institutes of Health. If confirmed, he would lead them from the helm of HHS, with its more than $1.7 trillion budget. Clashes are likely. Kennedy has supported access to abortion until a fetus is viable. That puts him at odds with Dave Weldon, the former Florida congressman whom Trump has chosen to run the CDC. Weldon, a physician, is an abortion opponent who wrote one of the major laws allowing health professionals to opt out of participating in the procedure. Weldon would head an agency that’s been in the crosshairs of conservatives since the COVID pandemic began. He has touted his “100% pro-life voting record” on his campaign website. (He unsuccessfully ran earlier this year for a seat in Florida’s House of Representatives.) Trump has said he would leave decisions about abortion to the states, but the CDC under Weldon could, for example, fund studies on abortion risks. The agency could require states to provide information about abortions performed within their borders to the federal government or risk the loss of federal funds. Weldon, like Kennedy, has questioned the safety of vaccines and has said he believes they can cause autism. That’s at odds with the views of Marty Makary, a Johns Hopkins surgeon whom Trump plans to nominate for FDA commissioner. The British American said on the “Brian Kilmeade Show” on Fox News Radio that vaccines “save lives,” although he added that it’s good to question the U.S. vaccine schedule for children. The American Academy of Pediatricians encourages parents and their children’s doctors to stick to the recommended schedule of childhood vaccines. “Nonstandard schedules that spread out vaccines or start when a child is older put entire communities at risk of serious illnesses, including infants and young children,” the group says in guidance for its members. Jay Bhattacharya, a doctor and economist who is Trump’s selection to lead NIH, has also supported vaccines. Kennedy has said on NPR that federal authorities under his leadership wouldn’t “take vaccines away from anybody.” But the FDA oversees approval of vaccines, and, under his leadership, the agency could put vaccine skeptics on advisory panels or could make changes to a program that largely protects vaccine makers from consumer injury lawsuits. “I do believe that autism does come from vaccines,” Kennedy said in 2023 on Fox News . Many scientific studies have discredited the claim that vaccines cause autism. Ashish Jha, a doctor who served as the White House COVID response coordinator from 2022 to 2023, noted that Bhattacharya and Makary have had long and distinguished careers in medicine and research and would bring decades of experience to these top jobs. But, he said, it “is going to be a lot more difficult than they think” to stand up for their views in the new administration. It’s hard “to do things that displease your boss, and if [Kennedy] gets confirmed, he will be their boss,” Jha said. “They have their work cut out for them if they’re going to stand up for their opinions on science. If they don’t, it will just demoralize the staff.” Most of Trump’s picks share the view that federal health agencies bungled the pandemic response, a stance that resonated with many of the president-elect’s voters and supporters — even though Trump led that response until Joe Biden took office in 2021. Kennedy said in a 2021 Louisiana House oversight meeting that the COVID vaccine was the “deadliest” ever made. He has cited no evidence to back the claim. Federal health officials say the vaccines have saved millions of lives around the globe and offer important protection against COVID. Protection lasts even though their effectiveness wanes over time. The vaccines’ effectiveness against infection stood at 52% after four weeks, according to a May study in The New England Journal of Medicine, and their effectiveness against hospitalization was about 67% after four weeks. The vaccines were produced through Operation Warp Speed, a public-private partnership Trump launched in his first term to fast-track the shots as well as other treatments. Makary criticized COVID vaccine guidance that called for giving young children the shots. He argued that, for many people, natural immunity from infections could substitute for the vaccine. Bhattacharya opposed measures used to curb the spread of COVID in 2020 and advised that everyone except the most vulnerable go about their lives as usual. The World Health Organization warned that such an approach would overwhelm hospitals. Mehmet Oz, Trump’s choice to head the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, an agency within HHS, has said the vaccines were oversold. He promoted the use of the anti-malaria drug hydroxychloroquine as a treatment. The FDA in 2020 revoked emergency authorization of hydroxychloroquine for COVID, saying that it was unlikely to be effective against the virus and that the risk of dangerous side effects was too high. Janette Nesheiwat, meanwhile, a former Fox News contributor and Trump’s pick for surgeon general, has taken a different stance. The doctor described COVID vaccines as a gift from God in a Fox News opinion piece . Kennedy’s qualms about vaccines are likely to be a central issue early in the administration. He has said he wants federal health agencies to shift their focus from preparing for and combating infectious disease to addressing chronic disease. The shifting focus and questioning of vaccines concern some public health leaders amid the spread of the H5N1 bird flu virus among dairy cattle. There have been 60 human infections reported in the U.S. this year, all but two of them linked to exposure to cattle or poultry. “Early on, they’re going to have to have a discussion about vaccinating people and animals” against bird flu, said Georges C. Benjamin, executive director of the American Public Health Association. “We all bring opinions to the table. A department’s cohesive policy is driven by the secretary.” ©2024 KFF Health News. Our Guide to the ‘Wicked’ Movie’s Best and Biggest Moments

Rookie Bucky Irving relishes opportunity to help Buccaneers any way he can against skidding RaidersAnalyzing multiple mammograms improves breast cancer risk prediction December 5, 2024 Washington University School of Medicine A new method of analyzing mammograms identified individuals at high risk of developing breast cancer more accurately than the standard, questionnaire-based method did. The new method, powered by artificial intelligence, could help diagnose cancer earlier and guide recommendations for earlier screening, additional imaging or risk-reducing medications. Facebook Twitter Pinterest LinkedIN Email A new study from Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis describes an innovative method of analyzing mammograms that significantly improves the accuracy of predicting the risk of breast cancer development over the following five years. Using up to three years of previous mammograms, the new method identified individuals at high risk of developing breast cancer 2.3 times more accurately than the standard method, which is based on questionnaires assessing clinical risk factors alone, such as age, race and family history of breast cancer. The study is published Dec. 5 in JCO Clinical Cancer Informatics . "We are seeking ways to improve early detection, since that increases the chances of successful treatment," said senior author Graham A. Colditz, MD, DrPH, associate director of Siteman Cancer Center, based at Barnes-Jewish Hospital and WashU Medicine, and the Niess-Gain Professor of Surgery. "This improved prediction of risk also may help research surrounding prevention, so that we can find better ways for women who fall into the high-risk category to lower their five-year risk of developing breast cancer." This risk-prediction method builds on past research led by Colditz and lead author Shu (Joy) Jiang, PhD, a statistician, data scientist and associate professor of surgery in the Division of Public Health Sciences at WashU Medicine. The researchers showed that prior mammograms hold a wealth of information on early signs of breast cancer development that can't be perceived even by a well-trained human eye. This information includes subtle changes over time in breast density, which is a measure of the relative amounts of fibrous versus fatty tissue in the breasts. For the new study, the team built an algorithm based on artificial intelligence that can discern subtle differences in mammograms and help identify those women at highest risk of developing a new breast tumor over a specific timeframe. In addition to breast density, their machine-learning tool considers changes in other patterns in the images, including in texture, calcification and asymmetry within the breasts. "Our new method is able to detect subtle changes over time in repeated mammogram images that are not visible to the eye," said Jiang, yet these changes hold rich information that can help identify high-risk individuals. At the moment, risk-reduction options are limited and can include drugs such as tamoxifen that lower risk but may have unwanted side effects. Most of the time, women at high risk are offered more frequent screening or the option of adding another imaging method, such as an MRI, to try to identify cancer as early as possible. "Today, we don't have a way to know who is likely to develop breast cancer in the future based on their mammogram images," said co-author Debbie L. Bennett, MD, an associate professor of radiology and chief of breast imaging for the Mallinckrodt Institute of Radiology at WashU Medicine. "What's so exciting about this research is that it indicates that it is possible to glean this information from current and prior mammograms using this algorithm. The prediction is never going to be perfect, but this study suggests the new algorithm is much better than our current methods." AI improves prediction of breast cancer development The researchers trained their machine-learning algorithm on the mammograms of more than 10,000 women who received breast cancer screenings through Siteman Cancer Center from 2008 -- 2012. These individuals were followed through 2020, and in that time 478 were diagnosed with breast cancer. The researchers then applied their method to predict breast cancer risk in a separate set of patients -- more than 18,000 women who received mammograms through Emory University in the Atlanta area from 2013 -- 2020. Subsequently, 332 women were diagnosed with breast cancer during the follow-up period, which ended in 2020. According to the new prediction model, women in the high-risk group were 21 times more likely to be diagnosed with breast cancer over the following five years than were those in the lowest-risk group. In the high-risk group, 53 out of every 1,000 women screened developed breast cancer over the next five years. In contrast, in the low-risk group, 2.6 women per 1,000 screened developed breast cancer over the following five years. Under the old questionnaire-based methods, only 23 women per 1,000 screened were correctly classified in the high-risk group, providing evidence that the old method, in this case, missed 30 breast cancer cases that the new method found. The mammograms were conducted at academic medical centers and community clinics, demonstrating that the accuracy of the method holds up in diverse settings. Importantly, the algorithm was built with robust representation of Black women, who are usually underrepresented in development of breast cancer risk models. The accuracy for predicting risk held up across racial groups. Of the women screened through Siteman, most were white, and 27% were Black. Of those screened through Emory, 42% were Black. In ongoing work, the researchers are testing the algorithm in women of diverse racial and ethnic backgrounds, including those of Asian, southeast Asian and Native American descent, to help ensure that the method is equally accurate for everyone. The researchers are working with WashU's Office of Technology Management toward patents and licensing on the new method with the goal of making it broadly available anywhere screening mammograms are provided. Colditz and Jiang also are working toward founding a start-up company around this technology. Jiang S, Bennett DL, Rosner BA, Tamimi RM, Colditz GA. Development and validation of a dynamic 5-year breast cancer risk model using repeated mammograms. JCO Clinical Cancer Informatics. Dec. 5, 2024. As technology progresses, so does the demand for artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML). As such, the tools that enable developers to build powerful models have to keep up with the growing demand. TensorFlow and PyTorch are, quite frankly, the most spoken frameworks in machine learning, and both are really powerful and flexible. While both frameworks are incredibly robust and versatile, deciding which one to use for your project can significantly influence the development process and outcomes. Understanding TensorFlow and PyTorch Google -developed TensorFlow is over five years old and relatively young. Still a favorite among the audiences because of its high degree of scalability and production readiness. It is an open-source framework designed to simplify the deployment of machine learning models across different platforms, including mobile and web. Therefore, TensorFlow allows flexibility, has great community support, and offers tools such as TensorFlow Lite and TensorFlow.js, which are popular among researchers and enterprises. Facebook developed and introduced PyTorch for the first time in 2016. In recent times, it has become very popular among researchers because of its dynamic computational graph, which more closely resembles a common Pythonic, intuitive experience, thereby making it quite user-friendly for experimentation and prototyping. Most importantly, the adoption of PyTorch within the academic community resulted in phenomenal numbers of cutting-edge research papers published using this tool. TensorFlow had a steep learning curve at first because it had a static computational graph. Users would first define the graph, and then they could execute it. But in TensorFlow 2.0, eager execution is the default mode, making it much more intuitive compared to PyTorch. PyTorch, with its dynamic computational graph, feels more natural for Python developers. That makes it easy for them to learn, and if they were to debug, they could do so using all the standard Python tools. TensorFlow, with its static computation graph, is less flexible but excels in production environments where stability and optimization are critical. The dynamic computation graph within PyTorch is again its biggest convenience feature, providing more flexibility to users for modifying and debugging the operation on the fly. Researchers love this because they can experiment with new architectures. TensorFlow shines when it comes to deploying models in production. Its suite of tools contains TensorFlow Serving for high-scale model serving, TensorFlow Lite for deploying models to mobile formats, and TensorFlow.js for browser-based models. While PyTorch may be on the way to development with TorchServe and ONNX (Open Neural Network Exchange) for model deployment, the level of production tools is, however, not as advanced as that of TensorFlow. TensorFlow is much wider in its community and ecosystem because it launched earlier than most other advanced tools and was keenly interested in enterprises. Its successful documentation included pre-trained models with support from Keras and many other such tools, which built strong support for developers. In contrast, PyTorch, despite a smaller ecosystem, is highly favored in the research community. It powers many state-of-the-art research projects, leading to the quick adoption of new ideas. Generally, TensorFlow is reputed for its very high efficiency in distributed training while being very effective in large-scale deployment. Among other advantages are TPU (Tensor Processing Unit) accelerations, which add highly in favor of its construction for developing complex models. PyTorch worked in the district with GPU acceleration support. However, there is no support for TPU, which would limit the scale at which this technology can be applied to some conditions. Which Framework Should You Choose? Your choice between TensorFlow and PyTorch eventually depends on whether it is developing research-centric or rapid prototyping projects. For building research-heavy projects and prototyping, PyTorch is the best option because of its user-friendliness and flexibility. For projects focused on scalability and production readiness, TensorFlow’s extensive tools and deployment options provide a competitive edge. Conclusions Both TensorFlow and PyTorch are outstanding frameworks that serve different purposes. TensorFlow is known for its maturity and extensive ecosystem, making it the preferred choice for production-level applications. On the other hand, PyTorch's dynamic nature is ideal for research and experimentation. To decide which framework is best suited for your needs, consider your project requirements, skill level, and deployment goals. Regardless of your choice, both frameworks offer a solid foundation for creating innovative and impactful AI solutions.Javon Leake is staying put. A CFL source said Friday the veteran running back-returner has agreed to terms on a two-year extension with the Edmonton Elks. Leake was slated to become a free agent in February. The source added the deal — which was negotiated by Kenny Kim of Summit Athletes — was worth more than $270,000 in hard money. The source spoke on the condition of anonymity as the Elks hadn't formally announced the move. The six-foot, 205-pound Leake ran for a career-high 661 yards on 102 carries (6.5-yard average) with six TDs in 15 games this past season, his first with Edmonton. Leake also had two 100-yard rushing contests in 2024 while adding 34 catches for 301 yards and a touchdown. Leake also had 23 punt returns for 214 yards and 25 kickoff returns for 539 yards. Leake joined the Elks as a free agent after spending two seasons with the Toronto Argonauts, winning a Grey Cup with the club in 2022. Leake was used predominantly as a returner with Toronto and was the CFL's top special-teams player in 2023 after registering 81 punt returns for 1,216 yards and four TDs. He had 38 kickoff returns for 793 yards. Leake had 15 carries for 52 yards over his two seasons with the Argos. This report by The Canadian Press was first published Dec. 13, 2024. Mitolyn is more than just a supplement; it's a lifestyle update that can allow you to take control of your weight reduction journey and live a better, more active life. Get started with Mitolyn today! Importance Of Healthy Mitochondria Levels Mitochondria, sometimes known as the "powerhouses of the cell," play an important part in maintaining a healthy weight. When their function is disrupted, a series of issues arise, making weight management difficult. One of the most serious concerns associated with damaged mitochondria is the body's inability to burn fat efficiently. Mitochondria turn stored calories and fat into energy. When these tiny structures are damaged, fat oxidation decreases, resulting in persistent weight gain that nutrition and physical activity alone cannot reverse. Low mitochondrial levels also result in lower energy generation, which has a direct impact on physical activity. Individuals with poor mitochondrial health frequently feel fatigued, making it harder to maintain a vigorous routine or engage in regular workouts. This lack of mobility exacerbates weight growth, resulting in an endless cycle. Furthermore, damaged mitochondria cause hormonal abnormalities since they regulate metabolic hormones. Disruptions in these hormones can cause increased hunger, poor satiety, and a tendency to retain fat rather than burn it. Chronic inflammation and oxidative stress are two additional problems linked with mitochondrial dysfunction. These factors not only impede metabolism but also encourage the storage of visceral fat, raising the risk of obesity-related illnesses. Without addressing these underlying causes, maintaining a healthy body weight is extremely impossible. Mitolyn is a science-backed, novel approach to weight loss that targets a primary reason that most fat management treatments overlook: low mitochondrial levels. These little powerhouses within your cells play an important part in your body's capacity to burn fat, generate energy, and maintain overall health. But how does Mitolyn do this? Mitolyn's success is based on its capacity to support and possibly increase the activity of mitochondria. Mitochondria transform the food you ingest into energy, known as ATP. This energy powers everything, from muscular contraction to brain activity. Low mitochondrial levels reduce energy generation, delay fat burning and cause undesirable weight gain. Mitolyn works to rejuvenate these cellular powerhouses, potentially helping your body burn fat more efficiently and produce the energy it requires to survive. Mitolyn is a holistic health supplement that does more than just help you lose weight. It can help promote cholesterol balance and may improve circulation, both of which benefit heart health. The mixture can also improve immune function, allowing your body to fight off infections more efficiently. It may help improve skin, liver and digestive health, possibly resulting in a more vibrant and energetic lifestyle. Chronic stress is a silent impediment to successful weight management. Mitolyn contains substances that may help control stress hormones, boost mood and promote mental clarity. Mitolyn can help promote the smoothest possible weight loss path by addressing both physical and mental well-being. Researchers discovered that decreased mitochondrial levels are a common cause in obese people. Mitolyn builds on this discovery by addressing the cellular basis of energy and fat metabolism. It's a comprehensive program designed to help you accomplish not only weight loss but also total energy and wellness. Click here to check out the official website for Mitolyn >>> Customers who have tried Mitolyn have shared remarkable transformation tales, emphasizing the product's effectiveness in helping them meet their weight loss goals. It is created using plant-based compounds, vitamins, and minerals. After a thorough research and examination, here are some of the main Mitolyn ingredients: Rhodiola is a potent adaptogen known for its potential ability to battle both physical and mental stress, making it a crucial element in Mitolyn. Stress frequently disturbs the body's metabolism, resulting in weight gain and energy depletion. Rhodiola works by improving mitochondrial activity, increasing energy output, and promoting fat metabolism . It also can regulate cortisol levels, which reduces stress-induced cravings and impulsive eating. Rhodiola may also boost endurance and stamina, allowing you to perform better throughout the exercise. This powerful herb keeps your body in peak condition for effective weight management by addressing both mental and physical pressures. Amla, commonly referred to as Indian gooseberry, is a high-antioxidant, vitamin C-rich superfood. This superfruit promotes healthy metabolism by lowering oxidative stress in mitochondria, allowing them to function more efficiently. Amla improves digestion and detoxification, which are essential for a healthy weight. Its anti-inflammatory qualities contribute to the reduction of chronic inflammation, which is frequently associated with persistent fat storage. Furthermore, Amla promotes greater absorption of nutrients, ensuring that your body receives the necessary components for energy production. Amla is an important ingredient in Mitolyn's weight loss recipe because of its capacity to potentially enhance metabolic health as well as cell function. Schisandra is a multi-purpose herb that promotes mitochondrial health by increasing energy output and decreasing weariness. It is well-known for its adaptogenic characteristics, which aid in the body's ability to cope with stress, a typical obstacle to weight loss. Schisandra also improves liver function by assisting in the detoxification processes required for proper metabolism. Its strong antioxidant concentration prevents oxidative stress and maintains mitochondrial integrity. Furthermore, Schisandra regulates blood sugar levels, lowering cravings and encouraging consistent energy. This substance keeps your body energized and concentrated during your weight-loss journey. Its unique capacity to increase cellular energy makes it an essential component of Mitolyn, helping to promote efficient fat metabolism and general health. Theobroma cacao, sometimes known as the "food of the gods," is an organic source of flavonoids and magnesium, each of which improves mitochondrial function. It stimulates energy generation by boosting blood flow to cells, ensuring that mitochondria receive vital nutrients.
