The Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP) and a former Vice President of the country, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar have reacted to a statement credited to one of the spokesmen to President Bola Tinubu, Daniel Bwala boasting that his principal will win the 2027 Presidential Election. In separate reactions to Bwala’s outburst, CUPP and Abubakar, who contested the presidential election in the last 2023 general election stated that it was premature for anyone to assert that the second term ambition of President Bola Tinubu was a fait accompli in the wake of the current economic hardship being faced by Nigerians. They both argue that the assertion smacks of gross insensibility to the plights of Nigerians who are currently bearing the pangs of the numerous economic policies of the current administration. National Secretary of CUPP, Chief Peter Ameh said the remarks reinforced the perception that the government is disconnected from the people, adding that government officials don’t quite appreciate the impact of their seeming inability to meet the expectations of the citizenry. The statement reads, “Recent declaration by the Presidency that (President) Bola Tinubu will not only contest but win the 2027 Presidential Election has sparked widespread controversy and raised fundamental questions about the administration’s priorities and sensitivity to citizens’ plight. “This boastful statement, coming at a time when millions of Nigerians are struggling to make ends meet, has been perceived as tone-deaf and out of touch with the harsh realities on the ground. “Given the current economic hardships and suffering of Nigerians, Tinubu’s victory seems unrealistic. The administration’s policies have exacerbated poverty, inflation, and unemployment, eroding public trust and confidence in the government’s ability to deliver on its promises. “The declaration, therefore, appears to be a mere statement of intent rather than a reflection of the prevailing political and economic realities. “Furthermore, this declaration may be seen as a diversionary tactic or an attempt to manipulate public opinion. At a time when Nigerians are crying out for relief from the economic hardship, the administration is busy making boasts about electoral victories. “This approach not only demonstrates a lack of empathy but also reinforces the perception that the government is disconnected from the people. “In a democratic system, the government’s primary responsibility is to respond to the needs and aspirations of its citizens. Instead of boasting about electoral victories that will not be given by the people, the administration should focus on addressing the pressing issues that have brought the country to its knees. Poverty, insecurity, and infrastructure development are just a few of the challenges that require urgent attention. “Moreover, the declaration raises questions about the administration’s understanding of democracy and the electoral process. Democracy is about the people, and their voices must be heard. The administration’s boastful claim that Tinubu will win the 2027 Presidential Election undermines the democratic process and ignores the possibility that Nigerians may have a different choice. “The declaration by the Presidency that Tinubu will win the 2027 Presidential Election is not only premature but also unrealistic. It demonstrates a lack of empathy and understanding of the harsh economic realities facing Nigerians. “Instead of boasting about electoral victories, the administration should focus on addressing the pressing issues that have brought the country to its knees. Nigerians deserve a more inclusive and responsive governance that prioritizes their needs and aspirations.” Speaking through his media aide, Mr. Paul Ibe, Abubakar said there is no need responding to the presidency’s claim regarding the 2027, since the decision of who becomes president rests with Nigerians. “There is no need going back and forth on this matter. We have stated our position. Nigerians will be the ultimate deciders of who becomes president,” Atiku stated. The former vice president who spoke through his media adviser, Paul Ibe, said President Bola Tinubu has demonstrated that he does not deserve to be re-elected by Nigerians. He had earlier in a statement called for equity and fairness in choosing who Nigeria’s president becomes in 2027. According to Atiku, there is a disparity in the number of years the North and South have been in power since the return of democracy in the country in 1999. He said, “By the year 2027, the South would have enjoyed 17 years of leadership, eight years under Obasanjo, five years under Jonathan, and four years under Tinubu, while the North would have experienced only 11 years, with Yar’Adua serving three and Buhari eight. “This results in a disparity of six years between the North and South, casting a shadow over the balance of power.”Apple Cash: How to use it to send and receive moneyPercentages: FG .440, FT .619. 3-Point Goals: 11-26, .423 (Wolf 3-6, Poindexter 3-8, Pence 2-4, Kinziger 2-5, Banks 1-3). Qatar launches green bond trading on LSEGThe World Health Organization (WHO) and public health experts are calling for increased political commitment and funding to fight malaria, especially in endemic regions like Africa. This week's release of the 2024 World Malaria Report by the WHO said there were 11 million more malaria cases compared to the previous year and that Ethiopia and Nigeria recorded their highest death tolls from the disease since 2015. According to Wednesday's report, there were 263 million cases of the mosquito-borne disease and nearly 600,000 deaths worldwide last year. The report indicates global malaria cases grew by about 11 million compared to the year prior while fatalities remained nearly the same. The WHO report said Africa accounted for 95% of global malaria deaths. Most of the victims were children under 5 years of age. Dr. Kehinde Ajayi, an expert on malaria epidemiology and control, said one issue is that since 2020, most developing nations have had a shortage of resources to combat the disease. “Some of the resources like insecticide-treated nets and also funding towards the malaria control programs have been hampered because of ... COVID-19 and the economic imbalance in developing countries,” Ajayi said. Ajayi said climate change and declining effectiveness of anti-malaria drugs are threatening progress. Nigeria bears the world's highest burden of malaria with more than 27% of global malaria cases and 31% of deaths. But the WHO report also showed some progress — estimating that about 2.2 billion cases of malaria and 12.7 million deaths were averted globally since 2000. Ajayi said increased government funding for malaria interventions could change things. "Mosquitoes thrive very well under temperatures that are more than 19 degrees Celsius, and the climate change has made [that] possible,” Ajayi said. “Also, the plasmodium parasite has gained a lot of resistance against malaria drugs. Also, the government needs to invest more in our health sector. Government also needs to fund research that will help us in discovering indigenous drugs." The WHO report said only about half of the $8.7 billion target for malaria intervention last year was achieved. In Nigeria, spending on health care is about 4% of the national budget, much lower than the 15% agreed upon by the African Union in 2001 — in the so-called Abuja Declaration. Authorities have pledged to improve spending on health. On Thursday, Nigeria signed a deal to promote local production of test kits for HIV and malaria. Last week, Nigeria launched its malaria vaccination campaign — becoming the latest African country to provide malaria vaccines to young children. There are now 17 countries giving new malaria vaccines.

Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh): Number One! The government formed last year is going to complete one year in office, and now, its performance is being evaluated. Many in the corridors of power are also trying to find who is close to the head of the government. When the government was formed, there were speculations about: among the ministers who would be the closest one to the Boss? Because the government is completing one year, the minister – the closest one to the Boss – is apparent. There are reports that the head of the state counts on a low-file minister. The department the minister is heading is not very significant, but he has been made in-charge of an important district. If the head of the state finds any opportunity, he may allot an important department to his man of confidence. In politics, the minister is close to those with whom the head of the state has good relations. This is the reason that both have been close to each other for a long time, and immediately after the formation of the cabinet, the low-profile minister got a berth in it. At a time when the government is completing one year, it is clear that the minister is nearer to the head of the state than his other cabinet colleagues are. Moolah and minister There are many stories about a minister and the way he makes moolah. In the past few years, the minister has made a lot of lucre, which his son and another person are managing. The amount of dough that the minister has made has increased so much that the minister is planning to set up a big project to invest the money in it. They are planning to set up a hotel besides the minister entering into a deal with some people to invest money outside the state. He is also holding talks with some companies which are working in the state. The probe agencies have given feedback to the Union Government about the minister’s underhand deals. Those who are close to the minister are on the agencies’ radar. So, they may glower at his aide, and may not spare the minister, too, in the coming days. Hidden chasm Two leaders of the Congress may seem to be together, but the rift between them is not hidden from the public eye. After the party’s victory in Vijaypur, one of the two leaders has been praising a former legislator of the party for the win. The leader made a post on social media, giving credit to the one who switched over to the BJP from the Congress, for the success. This leader does not want the party organisation and a legislator and former minister to take the credit for the triumph. In fact, this leader has an old rivalry with the legislator’s father. So, he is averse to giving credit to his old adversary’s son. On the other hand, the MPCC president is getting credit for the party’s victory, which again the leader is opposed to. Those who are close to the leader are making such posts on social media as may indicate that the leader was responsible for the party’s success in Vijaypur. The way the leader is working shows that he may not be allowed to cling to the important position he is holding for a long time. Futile repentance A Congress legislator who switched over to the BJP before the Lok Sabha election is now repenting. The legislator took a major decision on the advice of a minister of the ruling party. She hoped that the BJP leaders would deploy their arms to admit her into the party. Six months after joining the BJP, she has realised that he took a wrong decision. The ruling dispensation has stopped giving her any importance. The attention, which she was getting from the officers in the district when he was with the Congress, has gradually reduced after her switchover to the BJP. Now, for everything, she has to seek the help of the minister on whose advice she defected to the BJP. The legislator is also not getting any attention from the BJP organisation. After the Vijaypur by-poll outcome, the BJP does not want her to resign from the House membership and seek a fresh election. Because the present assembly has still a long term to go, she is making all efforts to save her House membership and political career. Minister silenced The Vijaypur by-election outcome has drawn lines among the leaders in the BJP, too. After the party’s defeat, the statement of a Union Minister was in public discussion. This union minister did not canvass for the party candidate, but the BJP leaders did not buy his arguments for not taking part in the electioneering. The reply the minister got from the BJP organisation was beyond his expectations. Its leaders publicly turned down the reasons he put forward for not campaigning for the party candidate. There are reports that top leadership in Bhopal as well as in Delhi has the support behind the reply given by the party. The union minister has kept mum after the statement. The by-election has created a rift between the minister and the state leadership. The supporters of the minister also look worried after the party issued such a statement. They think lest it should have an impact on them. It may have a bearing on the BJP politics in the coming days. Devilish pet There is a maxim: “When a dog bites a man, that is not news, because it happens so often, but if a man bites a dog that is news.” The adage is attributed to Alfred Harmsworth, John B Bogart and to Charles Anderson Dana. That, who said it, is no more a piece of information, because of Goggle Baba who can reel out everything at one go. But if a dog bites a minister, that is also news. And it happened. When the minister was at home, his pet sank its teeth into his palm. Though the minister was writhing in pain, he was happy, thinking it was less gut-wrenching than back-biting. However painful his palm may have been, he preferred a government hospital to a private one for treatment. The minister queued up at the OPD of the hospital and got proper treatment for the injury. The minister was so impressed by the care at the hospital, that he narrated his experience on social media. Through his account, he appealed to citizens to go to the government hospitals in preference to the private ones. But thank God. The days of giving fourteen injections around the navel after a dog bite ended nearly 44 years ago. Else, he would have cursed his dog as well as the doctors.

Parts of the UK have experienced forceful wind, with some hitting speeds of around 93mph. This includes areas of the Thames Valley, as a tree collapsed in The Crescent on Saturday, December 7. Images taken from the scene show the plant has taken up most of the pavement, as well as a section of the road. Orange cones with reflectors have been placed around the infringement to aid drivers making their way up and down the road. It is hoped that the tree will be removed by Sunday, December 8. This is the second big tree to fall in the town as a result of the country’s latest storm, as one fell in Suffield Road several hours before. Officers from Thames Valley Police attended the scene and made the vicinity safe. Many people took to social media to alert those in the town of the obstruction, whilst wishing others a safe journey when out and about. According to a resident who lives near that part of Wycombe, the road ‘is now clear’ and that nearby cars and occupants ‘are OK’.Saints QB situation remains cloudy as matchup with Washington nears

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) — Joseph Pinion had 22 points and eight rebounds, Dyondre Dominguez added 19 points and Arkansas State built a double-digit first-half lead to beat No. 16 Memphis 85-72 on Sunday. From virtual assistants simplifying everyday tasks to advanced systems transforming industries, artificial intelligence (AI) has established itself as an essential technological pillar of the 21st century. However, its impact is not limited to business or scientific sectors. A recent and touching example of its positive use has gone viral on TikTok, where a primary school teacher in Mexico has shown how AI can inspire children to achieve their dreams. According to a report by the consulting firm McKinsey, AI is expected to contribute $15.7 trillion to the global economy by 2030. While these figures highlight its economic relevance, they don’t fully capture its broader potential. Stories like Diana Vallejo’s quickly go viral on TikTok because of their ability to transform lives, starting with younger generations. Through her TikTok account, the teacher shared a video showing how she uses this technology to create images portraying her students as professionals, based on the dreams each shared in class. From veterinarians to soldiers, the generated images reflect the children’s aspirations, showcasing a future full of possibilities. The video, titled “I Wasn’t Wrong in Choosing to Be a Teacher,” has surpassed 250,000 views and generated hundreds of positive comments praising both the creative use of technology and the teacher’s dedication to her students. Among the supportive messages, some stand out: “The important thing is knowing that someone believes in you and that you can achieve it” and “If girls want to become teachers, it’s because their teacher is doing a great job.” With this video, Diana’s innovative idea not only highlights the hopeful side of AI but also emphasizes the importance of educators who strive to go beyond traditional teaching methods to connect with their students. Although artificial intelligence has been the subject of debate in various fields, cases like this spark reflections on its positive use in education. Far from being just a technical tool, AI here emerges as a catalyst for inspiration and a means to strengthen the relationship between teachers and students. Another example is how many individuals and homemakers use AI to help solve everyday problems, such as fixing a leaky pipe. Cancela en cualquier momento Acceso exclusivo a rankings y radiografías. 'Other Religions' Places Of Worship Are Not Under Govt Control, Therefore Hindu Temples Must Be Freed,' Says Ramgiri MaharajHome not-so-sweet home

WASHINGTON — For years, Pat Verhaeghe didn’t think highly of Donald Trump as a leader. Then Verhaeghe began seeing more of Trump’s campaign speeches online and his appearances at sporting events. There was even the former president’s pairing with Bryson DeChambeau as part of the pro golfer’s YouTube channel series to shoot an under-50 round of golf while engaging in chitchat with his partner. “I regret saying this, but a while ago I thought he was an idiot and that he wouldn’t be a good president,” said the 18-year-old first-time voter. “I think he’s a great guy now.” Verhaeghe isn’t alone among his friends in suburban Detroit or young men across America. Although much of the electorate shifted right to varying degrees in 2024, young men were one of the groups that swung sharply toward Trump. More than half of men under 30 supported Trump, according to AP VoteCast , a survey of more than 120,000 voters, while Democrat Joe Biden had won a similar share of this group four years earlier. White men under 30 were solidly in Trump’s camp this year — about 6 in 10 voted for Trump — while young Latino men were split between the two candidates. Most Black men under 30 supported Democrat Kamala Harris, but about one-third were behind Trump. Young Latino men’s views of the Democratic Party were much more negative than in 2020, while young Black men’s views of the party didn’t really move. About 6 in 10 Latino men under 30 had a somewhat or very favorable view of the Democrats in 2020, which fell to about 4 in 10 this year. On the other hand, about two-thirds of young Black men had a favorable view of the Democrats this year, which was almost identical to how they saw the party four years ago. “Young Hispanic men, and really young men in general, they want to feel valued,” said Rafael Struve, deputy communications director for Bienvenido, a conservative group that focused on reaching young Hispanic voters for Republicans this year. “They’re looking for someone who fights for them, who sees their potential and not just their struggles.” Struve cited the attempted assassination of Trump during a July rally in Pennsylvania as one of the catalyzing moments for Trump’s image among many young men. Trump, Struve said, was also able to reach young men more effectively by focusing on nontraditional platforms like podcasts and digital media outlets. “Getting to hear from Trump directly, I think, really made all the difference,” Struve said of the former president’s appearances on digital media platforms and media catering to Latino communities, like town halls and business roundtables Trump attended in Las Vegas and Miami. Not only did Trump spend three hours on Joe Rogan’s chart-topping podcast, but he took up DeChambeau’s “Break 50” challenge for the golfer’s more than 1.6 million YouTube subscribers. Trump already had an edge among young white men four years ago, although he widened the gap this year. About half of white men under 30 supported Trump in 2020, and slightly less than half supported Biden. Trump’s gains among young Latino and Black men were bigger. His support among both groups increased by about 20 percentage points, according to AP VoteCast — and their feelings toward Trump got warmer, too. It wasn’t just Trump. The share of young men who identified as Republicans in 2024 rose as well, mostly aligning with support for Trump across all three groups. “What is most alarming to me is that the election is clear that America has shifted right by a lot,” said William He, founder of Dream For America, a liberal group that works to turn out young voters and supported Harris’ presidential bid. With his bombastic demeanor and a policy agenda centered on a more macho understanding of culture, Trump framed much of his campaign as a pitch to men who felt scorned by the country’s economy, culture and political system. Young women also slightly swung toward the former president, though not to the degree of their male counterparts. It’s unclear how many men simply did not vote this year. But there’s no doubt the last four years brought changes in youth culture and how political campaigns set out to reach younger voters. Democrat Kamala Harris’ campaign rolled out policy agendas tailored to Black and Latino men, and the campaign enlisted a range of leaders in Black and Hispanic communities to make the case for the vice president. Her campaign began with a flurry of enthusiasm from many young voters, epitomized in memes and the campaign’s embrace of pop culture trends like the pop star Charli XCX’s “brat” aesthetic. Democrats hoped to channel that energy into their youth voter mobilization efforts. “I think most young voters just didn’t hear the message,” said Santiago Mayer, executive director of Voters of Tomorrow, a liberal group that engages younger voters. Mayer said the Harris campaign’s pitch to the country was “largely convoluted” and centered on economic messaging that he said wasn’t easily conveyed to younger voters who were not already coming to political media. “And I think that the policies themselves were also very narrow and targeted when what we really needed was a simple, bold economic vision,” said Mayer. Trump also embraced pop culture by appearing at UFC fights, football games and appearing alongside comedians, music stars and social media influencers. His strategists believed that the former president’s ability to grab attention and make his remarks go viral did more for the campaign than paid advertisements or traditional media appearances. Trump’s campaign also heavily cultivated networks of online conservative platforms and personalities supportive of him while also engaging a broader universe of podcasts, streaming sites, digital media channels and meme pages open to hearing him. “The right has been wildly successful in infiltrating youth political culture online and on campus in the last couple of years, thus radicalizing young people towards extremism,” said He, who cited conservative activist groups like Turning Point USA as having an outsize impact in online discourse. “And Democrats have been running campaigns in a very old fashioned way. The battleground these days is cultural and increasingly on the internet.” Republicans may lose their broad support if they don’t deliver on improving Americans’ lives, Struve cautioned. Young men, especially, may drift from the party in a post-Trump era if the party loses the president-elect’s authenticity and bravado. Bienvenido, for one group, will double down in the coming years to solidify and accelerate the voting pattern shifts seen this year, Struve said. “We don’t want this to be a one and done thing,” he said. Associated Press writer Joey Cappelletti in Lansing, Michigan, and AP polling editor Amelia Thomson-DeVeaux contributed to this report.

Brock Purdy participated in the start of Thursday's practice with the 49ers but the San Francisco starting quarterback was not on the field for the majority of the workout, casting doubt over his availability to play Sunday at Green Bay. Purdy is dealing with a right shoulder injury and the 49ers are also potentially without left tackle Trent Williams and Nick Bosa due to injuries. Bosa was listed as out of Thursday's practice with an oblique injury. Williams also didn't suit up Thursday. He played through an ankle injury last week after being listed as questionable. Purdy's typical Thursday post-practice media session was scrapped until Friday as the 49ers did not make any quarterback available. Kyle Allen would step in for Purdy as the starter if he can't play against the Packers. Run game coordinator Chris Foerster said the 49ers aren't where they want to be at 5-5 because they haven't won close games, not because of injuries. "Seven games left is like an eternity," Foerster said. "So much can happen. Do the math. What was our record last year? It was 12-5. I was on a 13-win team that was nowhere near as good as the team last year." With or without Purdy, Foerster said the challenge for the 49ers is not to give up the ball to a defense that has 19 takeaways. The 49ers have 13 giveaways this season. --Field Level Media

The heatwave toasting eastern Australia will peak on Wednesday as temperatures again climb towards 40C in parts of Sydney, keeping energy authorities on edge. By mid-morning, suburbs in Sydney’s south and west were the hottest points in Australia with Penrith exceeding 35C on the way to a forecast top of 39C. The site has now clocked five days in a row above 35C. Sydney’s CBD is also predicted by the Bureau of Meteorology to be the hottest capital for the day, with a top of 34C forecast – or the warmest since the end of February. Regions expecting low to high 30s today also include the Hunter and Illawarra districts to Sydney’s north and south, respectively. “Severe heatwave conditions are expected to peak on Wednesday, then ease by the weekend,” the bureau said in a warning alert. “Locations likely to be impacted include Batemans Bay, Camden, Campbelltown, Hornsby, Liverpool, Nowra, Penrith, Parramatta, Richmond and Wollongong.” This article includes content hosted on embed.bsky.app. We ask for your permission before anything is loaded, as the provider may be using cookies and other technologies. In line with recent days, the Australian Energy Market Operator (Aemo) has been issuing alerts calling for more generation from electricity suppliers to ensure power is not interrupted. On Wednesday morning, Aemo said a so-called level 3 lack of reserve condition was possible later in the day as solar output decreased towards sunset. By 4.30pm Aedt, the market is likely to require 84 megawatts of additional supply to avoid interrupted load – or blackouts. LOR3 forecasts have been relatively rare for New South Wales until the past week, when the operator has issued a cluster of them only to cancel as generators responded. About 6 gigawatts of coal-fired power station capacity remains unavailable, including some 3GW that was not previously scheduled. Many of Australia’s coal plants are nearing the end of their design lives, requiring more frequent and more costly repairs to keep operating. Aemo has also issue LOR2 level alerts for NSW for Wednesday afternoon and for periods on Thursday and Friday as the heatwave slowly ebbs. Such alerts are calls for generators to provide extra capacity as a back-up in case committed plants don’t operate as expected and drop off without warning. As of mid-morning, Aemo was looking for about 750-800MW more power to be in reserve for periods stretching from 3pm to 8pm, Aedt. Wholesale power prices may also spike to their ceiling of $17,500/megawatt-hour later on Wednesday, Aemo data indicates. The weather set-up, meanwhile, will favour thunderstorm activity over parts of eastern Australia including the prospect of heavy rainfall as tropical moisture is dragged southwards . Victoria faces high winds, particularly in the state’s northeast , the bureau said. The bureau also noted NSW health advice that severe heatwaves “can be dangerous for many people, especially older people, babies, children, pregnant and breastfeeding women, people with medical conditions and people who are unwell”. “Seek a place to keep cool, such as your home, a library, community centre or shopping centre,” it said, adding residents should draw blinds and curtains and close window early in the day to keep heat out of homes.PHILADELPHIA — A 161/2-hour power outage at Philadelphia International Airport’s Terminal D, which delayed flights, inconvenienced travelers and disrupted airport operations during a busy Thanksgiving travel weekend, ended Saturday afternoon. Power was restored to Terminal D around 1:30 p.m., PHL spokesperson Heather Redfern said. The cause of the outage was not immediately available. As of 3 p.m., 42 flights had been delayed because of the power outage, which began around 9 p.m. Friday, including 31 departure flights and 11 arrivals on Delta, United, Spirit, Alaska Air and Air Canada, according to Redfern. No flights had been canceled because of the outage, Redfern said. The outage affected every concession and electronic display in Terminal D. While airlines’ computer systems had been restored by late morning, the ticketing system along with the system that delivers baggage from the ticket counters to planes remained down, Redfern said. Three arriving United Airlines flights and three arriving Delta Airlines flights Friday night were directed to Terminal A because of the outage, according to Redfern. Additionally, incoming flights scheduled for Terminal D on Delta and United Saturday were moved to Terminal A-West. PHL announced the outage on social media in posts on X and Instagram just before 5 a.m. Saturday. The airport advised passengers to check with airlines for flight statuses. Redfern did not know how many passengers were affected by the power outage but said Terminal D accommodates fewer passengers than others in the airport. PHL expected 1.04 million passengers to pass through the airport between Nov. 22 and Dec. 3 for the Thanksgiving holiday, a 12% increase from last year, with 95,000 people expected to travel through the airport on Saturday, Redfern said. ©2024 The Philadelphia Inquirer. ‘Not A Leader’: Trump’s Surgeon General Pick Has Uphill Climb To Earning Trust Of MAGA Voters

Walmart’s DEI rollback signals a profound shift in the wake of Trump’s election victoryHouston Texans wideout Tank Dell will have surgery to repair a dislocated kneecap, torn ACL and other damage, coach DeMeco Ryans confirmed Monday. Dell sustained the injury to his left leg while catching a 30-yard touchdown pass in the third quarter of Saturday's 27-19 loss to the Chiefs in Kansas City. Dell, 25, remained hospitalized on Saturday and Sunday before returning to Houston on Monday. "We're still meeting with doctors to see what's next for him, but it is a significant knee injury," Ryans said. "Our thoughts and prayers are definitely with Tank at this time." As Dell made a diving catch of a C.J. Stroud pass, fellow receiver Jared Wayne tumbled into Dell as both went to the ground. Dell maintained possession of the ball but had to be carted off the field with his leg immobilized in a brace. The touchdown catch, with 11:40 remaining in the third quarter, brought the Texans to within 17-16 after the extra point failed. Houston (9-6) scored just three points the rest of the way. Dell finished his second season with 51 catches for 667 yards and three touchdowns in 14 games (10 starts). He had 47 receptions for 709 yards and seven scores in 11 games (eight starts) as a rookie in 2023. Ryans also announced that safety Jimmie Ward is out for the year with a mid-foot sprain that will require surgery. Ward left the game on a cart in the first half. Ward, 33, had 48 tackles and two interceptions, including one returned for a touchdown, in 10 starts this season. He has 549 tackles, 10 picks and 51 passes defensed in 126 games (99 starts) with the San Francisco 49ers (2014-22) and Texans. Houston, which already has clinched the AFC South division title, hosts the Baltimore Ravens (10-5) on Christmas Day. --Field Level Media

During the Thanksgiving holiday season, we pause to give thanks for our many blessings which include being able to live in what is considered to be the most progressive country in the universe. We are the envy of others. I mention this not only because of the season but also because the recent presidential election has cast a dark shadow over our efforts to unite our populace. I firmly believe there are at least four established norms or principles, if you wish, within our American culture that separate us from other countries and should drive our mindsets to be thankful rather than apprehensive. We must never forget we have had wars and rumors of wars, but we have still maintained one of the most peaceful countries in the world. Examples are the Civil War and the saber rattling by our antagonists. Our recovery from difficult times is nothing short of amazing. We should be thankful. We have had elections that may not have placed our preferred candidate in office, however, we know the election process was democratic, fair, peaceful and without fraud. We know that in authoritarian countries elections are rigged and controlled. We should be filled with gratitude. We should be thankful that our economy is one of the strongest when compared to other countries. We have an Economic Freedom Score of 70.1% . It means that, in general, we are doing a good job of meeting the needs of our populace across several quality of life measures. Last but not least, we should be thankful that we have the privilege within the law to worship and live a life based upon our personal beliefs without the interference of big government. These norms are a part of our DNA. They have been in place since our first presidential election in 1789. These guardrails have survived the test of time. Perhaps, more importantly, these norms have survived the politics of those who may have earned the right to sit behind the Resolute Desk. During this holiday season and beyond, we should be thankful, not apprehensive. George Comer, Crown Point, Indiana The bar has been lowered for elected officials I would agree that “A major part of holding public office....,” used to be to maintain some level of professionalism and integrity as referenced in the recent editorial about Cook County Board of Review Commissioner Samantha Steele’s DUI. I don’t believe a majority of Americans agree anymore, however. It seems that burning down the U.S. Capitol is OK, not to mention rape, fraud, lying and stealing. MJ McGuire, Elmhurst Court of flaw Special Counsel Jack Smith just agreed to pause prosecuting Donald Trump. Previously, Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg agreed to delay asking for Trump to be sentenced for the 34 felonies on which he was convicted. British Prime Minister William E. A fugitive gains fame in New Orleans eluding dart guns and nets NEW ORLEANS (AP) — For months, a fugitive dog known as Scrim has transfixed the city of New Orleans. The 17-pound mutt has gained fame eluding a tenacious band of citizens wielding a tranquilizer dart gun and night vision binoculars. He's already escaped two homes. Now his sightings are plotted on a crowd-sourced Google map. Animal rescuers hope to capture the renegade pooch and put him in a place that's safe and secure. But there's a backlash, fueled by the now-viral video of Scrim leaping out a two-story window, under the hashtag #FreeScrim, as some think the dog should be able to roam free. McConnell falls and sprains wrist after GOP luncheon, colleague says he is 'fine' WASHINGTON (AP) — Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell fell and sprained his wrist while walking out of a GOP luncheon on Tuesday, the latest in a series of medical incidents for him in recent years. That's according to a senator who was with him when it happened. Wyoming Sen. John Barrasso, the No. 3 Senate Republican and a doctor, said McConnell walked back to his office after the fall with no assistance and had “a small scratch.” Medical staff were seen taking a wheelchair into McConnell’s office just before a scheduled weekly news conference. McConnell, who is stepping down from his leadership post at the end of the year, did not attend the news conference. Who is Tony Buzbee, the lawyer suing Jay-Z as part of civil cases against Sean 'Diddy' Combs? HOUSTON (AP) — High-profile legal battles are nothing new for Texas attorney Tony Buzbee. His latest is a lawsuit he’s filed against rapper Jay-Z. Buzbee is accusing the iconic rapper as well as Sean “Diddy” Combs of sexually assaulting a minor at an awards show after-party in 2000. The lawsuit against Jay-Z is part of multiple civil cases Buzbee has filed on behalf of more than 150 people who allege sexual abuse and exploitation at the hands of Combs, who denies the claims. In his legal career, Buzbee has represented a variety of clients, including victims of sexual assault and well-known politicians. His critics say he’s full of bluster and bombast. Buzbee's firm says he's worked to “pursue justice against powerful figures.” OpenAI releases AI video generator Sora but limits how it depicts people SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — OpenAI has publicly released its new artificial intelligence video generator Sora but won’t let most users depict people as it monitors for patterns of misuse. Users of a premium version of OpenAI’s flagship product ChatGPT can now use Sora to instantly create AI-generated videos based on written commands. Among the highlighted examples are high-quality video clips of sumo-wrestling bears and a cat sipping coffee. But only a small set of invited testers can use Sora to make videos of humans as OpenAI works to “address concerns around misappropriation of likeness and deepfakes,” the company said in a blog post. Soto's record $765 million, 15-year contract with Mets reverberates through Major League Baseball DALLAS (AP) — Juan Soto’s record $765 million, 15-year contract with the New York Mets, the largest and longest deal in baseball history, has reverberated across the winter meetings. It stung the Yankees, who offered $760 million over 16 years to the All-Star outfielder. Soto’s deal sparked even greater expectations in a free agent market that includes pitchers Corbin Burnes and Max Fried, first basemen Pete Alonso and Christian Walker, third baseman Alex Bregman and outfielder Anthony Santander. Many small-market teams have long sought a salary cap but the consensus since the 1994-95 strike has been not to propose a hard limit. Rupert Murdoch’s attempt to change his family’s trust over Fox News media empire control rejected RENO, Nev. (AP) — A sealed document obtained by The New York Times says a Nevada commissioner has ruled against Rupert Murdoch’s effort to change his family’s trust to give his son Lachlan Murdoch control of his media empire and ensure Fox News maintains its conservative editorial slant. The commissioner concluded in a decision filed on Saturday that the two men had acted in “bad faith” in their bid to amend the irrevocable trust. Lachlan Murdoch is the head of Fox News and News Corp. The trust divides control of the company equally among Murdoch’s four oldest children after his death. A lawyer for Rupert Murdoch says he and his son intend to appeal the ruling. Greyhound racing is increasingly rare worldwide. New Zealand now plans to outlaw the practice WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) — New Zealand's racing minister says the country will outlaw greyhound racing, citing the injury rates for racing dogs. He says it will be shut down over the next 20 months, allowing time for those it employs to find other work and homes to be found for the 2,900 racing dogs. New Zealand is one of only a handful of countries where commercial greyhound racing is held. The industry body says the government has not recognized the progress it has made in animal welfare. The government passed an urgent law Tuesday barring greyhound owners from killing dogs as the industry winds down. Trustee over Infowars auction asks court to approve The Onion's winning bid A trustee who oversaw the bankruptcy auction of Alex Jones’ Infowars is asking a judge to approve The Onion’s winning bid for the conspiracy-filled platform. Trustee Christopher Murray took the stand Tuesday in the second day of testimony at a hearing where a judge is scrutinizing the satirical news outlet’s winning offer. He told U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Christopher Lopez in Houston that he was there asking a court to approve the sale of Infowars’ parent company to The Onion’s parent company. It is not clear how quickly Lopez will rule. The Onion wants to turn Infowars’ website and social media accounts into parodies. Still rockin': As a singer turns 80, the Christmas song she sang as a teen is a holiday staple NEW YORK (AP) — Brenda Lee's memories of recording “Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree” are a little hazy now. But that's to be expected, since she was 13-years-old when it was made in 1958 and this month is celebrating her 80th birthday. The song has lived a remarkable life, and even unseated Mariah Carey's “All I Want for Christmas is You” at the top of the Billboard charts last year. Experts say the way it evokes a simpler time at the “Christmas party hop” is a key to its success. The song achieves the neat trick of sounding retro without being dated. Mass evacuation of Philippine villages underway after a brief but major volcanic eruption MANILA, Philippines (AP) — About 87,000 people are being evacuated in a central Philippine region after a volcano erupted with a huge plume of ash and superhot streams of gas and debris hurtling down its slopes. The eruption Monday of Mount Kanlaon on central Negros island did not cause any immediate casualties, but the alert level was raised one level, indicating further and more explosive eruptions may occur. Volcanic ash fell over a wide area, nine flights were canceled or diverted, schools were closed and a nighttime curfew was imposed in the most vulnerable areas. Mass evacuations were being carried out urgently in towns and villages nearest the volcano's western and southern slopes.

Hail Flutie: BC celebrates 40th anniversary of Miracle in Miami

Spurs travel to Premier League champions Manchester City on Saturday reeling from a disappointing home loss to Ipswich before the international break. The club’s problems have multiplied during the past fortnight with midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur handed a seven-match domestic ban on Monday and Cristian Romero (toe) joining a lengthy list of absentees. However, Postecoglou remains bullish about Tottenham’s progress and acutely aware of the scrutiny set to come his way if they stay 10th. “Christmas is a joyous occasion, irrespective, and I think it should be celebrated. If we’re still 10th then people won’t be happy, I won’t be happy, but we might not be 10th,” Postecoglou pointed out before nine games in 30 days. “Certainly for us I think it’s a significant period because you look at those games and we’ve got the league where we’ve got to improve our position and a couple of important European fixtures that can set us up for the back half of the year, also a Carabao Cup quarter-final. “At the end of that period we could be in a decent position for a strong second half of the year, so for us it is an important period. “You know there’s no more international breaks, so the full focus is here. You can build some momentum through that, or if things don’t go well you could get yourself into a bit of a grind. Ready for #MCITOT 👊 Go behind the scenes of training ahead of our trip to Manchester 🎥⤵️ pic.twitter.com/4jFZTCIwSz — Tottenham Hotspur (@SpursOfficial) November 22, 2024 “Of course if we had beaten Ipswich, we’d be third and I reckon this press conference would be much different wouldn’t it? “I’m not going to let my life be dictated by one result, I’m sorry. I take a wider perspective on these things because I know how fickle it can be, but we need to address our position for sure. “And if we’re 10th at Christmas, yeah it won’t be great. There’d be a lot of scrutiny and probably a lot of scrutiny around me, which is fair enough, but that’s not where I plan for us to be.” Tottenham’s immediate efforts to move up the table will require them ending City’s two-year unbeaten home run in the Premier League. The champions have lost their last four matches in all competitions, but have some key personnel back for Saturday’s clash and will aim to toast Pep Guardiola’s new contract with a victory. Postecoglou was pleased to see Guardiola commit to a further two seasons in England, adding: “I love the fact that there’s a massive target out there that can seem insurmountable. “I look at it the other way. I go, ‘imagine if you knock him off, that’d be something’. “I’m at the stage of my life where I’d rather have the chance of knocking him off than missing that opportunity. “When greatness is around, you want to be around it. And hopefully it challenges you to be like that as well.” Saturday’s fixture will be Postecoglou’s 50th league game in charge of Spurs and he knows what is required to bring up three figures. A post shared by Premier League (@premierleague) “No European football, significant player turnover, change of playing style. Where did I think we’d be after 50 games? God knows. “It could have been a whole lot worse, but when you look at it in the current prism of we’re 10th, you’re going ‘it doesn’t look good’ and I understand that and we have to improve that. “But over the 50 games, I think there’s enough there that shows we are progressing as a team and we are developing into the team we want. “The key is the next 50 games, if they can be in totality better than the first 50? First, that means I’m here but second, I think we’ll be in a good space.”With the 2024-25 season in full swing, teams around the league are considering their options for a trade before February's deadline. The latest intel out of Los Angeles suggests the Lakers will be active on the trade front this year and that they are one of three teams interested in pursuing young big man Robert Williams III. “The Los Angeles Lakers, New Orleans Pelicans, and Sacramento Kings have held interest in the Portland Trail Blazers' big man dating back to the offseason," wrote NBA insider Brett Siegel . Robert Williams, 27, was the 27th overall pick in 2018. Began his career with the Boston Celtics , where he showed flashes of star potential and elite defensive play. He made the 2021-22 All-Defensive team with averages of 10.0 points, 9.6 rebounds, and 2.2 blocks per game on 73.6% shooting. After helping the Celtics reach the Finals in 2022, Robert Williams was sent to the Trail Blazers in a trade for Jrue Holiday, and the rest is history. Currently, Williams is having one of the best years of his career so far after an injury-riddled start with the Blazers. He's averaging a career-high 10.8 points, 6.6 rebounds, and 1.8 assists per game on 73.6% shooting. He's not currently available in trade talks, but the Blazers might be compelled to give him up if the offer is good enough. As a young, athletic, and strong center, Robert Williams would bring much-needed depth to the Lakers' frontcourt. It's no secret that GM Rob Pelinka has been on the hunt for some reinforcements down low , as there's only one big man who can back up Anthony Davis right now. With another option at center, Davis could play his preferred position (power forward) and carry a lighter burden on both ends of the floor. As one of the league's worst rebounding teams, adding a young and athletic rim runner could help them with cleaning the glass and preventing second-chance opportunities. With months to go before the NBA's trade deadline, the Lakers still have plenty of time to consider their best course of action. At 10-5 this season, and 4th in the standings, the Lakers are seemingly within range of the West's top teams. With Robert Williams III in their jersey, the Lakers would become a much bigger threat with added front-court depth and an insurance policy for any potential Anthony Davis injury. As it stands now, the Lakers would be screwed if Davis goes down but between LeBron James and a big man like Robert Williams, they'd have a chance to stay afloat until his return. For now, only time will tell if the Lakers can pull off an impactful trade but there is no question that they are on the hunt right now given the frequency of these rumors. The Lakers believe they are close to a title and that one more move could make the difference between success and failure. Robert Williams gives the Lakers everything they need and if Rob Pelina is willing to pay the price it could have major implications on the Western Conference hierarchy. NORFOLK, Va., Dec. 14, 2024 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Old Dominion University conferred approximately 1,624 degrees on Dec.14 during its 141st commencement ceremonies at Chartway Arena. The event was the first of its kind since the July 1 integration of EVMS into ODU, forming Macon & Joan Brock Virginia Health Sciences at Old Dominion University. The first ceremony at 9 a.m. recognized graduates from the Batten College of Engineering and Technology, the College of Arts and Letters, the College of Sciences, the School of Cybersecurity and the School of Data Science. The 12:30 p.m. ceremony celebrated students from the Darden College of Education and Professional Studies, the Graduate School, the Strome College of Business and Macon & Joan Brock Virginia Health Sciences at Old Dominion University's Ellmer College of Health Sciences, Ellmer School of Nursing and EVMS School of Health Professions. This ceremony also marked a historic milestone with the first two graduates from Macon & Joan Brock Virginia Health Sciences EVMS School of Health Professions at ODU - both receiving Doctorates in Medical Science. ODU President Brian O. Hemphill, Ph.D., shared a thought-provoking message with graduates as they contemplate their unique journeys ahead. "I would like you to think about the vital role an educated person plays in our society,” he said. "You are among the most fortunate people in one of the most fortunate countries on earth. "Because of the special status you hold as an educated person, others will look to you for leadership. I am confident that they will find in you what they find in so many Monarchs, and that is the heartfelt commitment to public service and social justice.” Kelly Till '94, the first female president and publisher of the Richmond Times-Dispatch, served as the keynote speaker for both ceremonies and Kay Kemper '80, ODU's first female vice president and former Board of Visitors rector, penned a letter to students offering advice for the future. President Hemphill presented Till and Kemper with honorary Doctor of Business degrees, making them both double alumnae of ODU. During her remarks, Till recalled her own graduation day three decades ago. "I left ODU in 1994 with big dreams, and looking back, I couldn't be prouder to be a Monarch,” she said. She imparted four timeless lessons to graduates - hoping they will shape and inspire them as they have her: She reflected on how losing her first job post-graduation was a setback that unexpectedly launched her 28-year career. Till reminded graduates that their journeys are uniquely theirs and to trust themselves to take bold risks. "You don't need anyone's permission to pursue your dreams,” Till said. She reminded graduates that no one achieves success alone and to find people who inspire, challenge and hold them accountable. Till, mother to an ODU alumna and a current student, ended with a heartfelt message that success isn't measured in accolades but defined by the lives you touch and the difference you make. "Go forth boldly, lead with purpose and always carry your Monarch pride wherever life takes you,” she said. In the written letter graduates received from Kay Kemper '80, she congratulated them and offered "a few lessons I've gathered since I sat where you are now.” She offered four pieces of advice: Kemper also offered additional pointers she's found useful, including make as few enemies as possible, it's rarely too late to pursue something meaningful, don't let intellectual pride keep you from learning from everyone you meet, start saving money early and get to know yourself well. Kemper ended by congratulating students and wishing them an "extraordinary” journey. "You can and will make a difference,” she wrote. ### CONTACT: Kenya Godette Old Dominion University 757-683-4988 [email protected]Conservatives Intervene to Delay Debate on NDP Motion in House of Commons

NEW YORK — President-elect Donald Trump’s lawyers formally asked a judge Monday to throw out his hush money criminal conviction , arguing continuing the case would present unconstitutional “disruptions to the institution of the Presidency.“ In a filing made public Tuesday, Trump’s lawyers told Manhattan Judge Juan M. Merchan that dismissal is warranted because of the “overwhelming national mandate granted to him by the American people on November 5, 2024.” They also cited President Joe Biden’s recent pardon of his son, Hunter Biden, who was convicted of tax and gun charges . The Manhattan district attorney, they claimed, engaged in the type of political theater "that President Biden condemned.” Prosecutors will have until Dec. 9 to respond. They have said they will fight any efforts to dismiss the case but indicated a willingness to delay the sentencing until after Trump’s second term ends in 2029. Former President Donald Trump walks to make comments to members of the news media May 30 after a jury convicted him of felony crimes for falsifying business records in a scheme to illegally influence the 2016 election at Manhattan Criminal Court in New York. In their filing Monday, Trump's attorneys dismissed the idea of holding off sentencing until Trump is out of office as a “ridiculous suggestion.” Following Trump’s election victory last month, Merchan halted proceedings and indefinitely postponed his sentencing, previously scheduled for late November, to allow the defense and prosecution to weigh in on the future of the case. He also delayed a decision on Trump’s prior bid to dismiss the case on immunity grounds. Trump has been fighting for months to reverse his conviction on 34 counts of falsifying business records to conceal a $130,000 payment to porn actor Stormy Daniels to suppress her claim that they had sex a decade earlier. He says they did not and denies wrongdoing. Taking a swipe at Bragg and New York City, as Trump often did throughout the trial, the filing argues that dismissal would also benefit the public by giving him and “the numerous prosecutors assigned to this case a renewed opportunity to put an end to deteriorating conditions in the City and to protect its residents from violent crime.” Clearing Trump, the lawyers added, also would allow him to “to devote all of his energy to protecting the Nation.” The defense filing was signed by Trump lawyers Todd Blanche and Emil Bove, who represented Trump during the trial and since were selected by the president-elect to fill senior roles at the Justice Department. A dismissal would erase Trump’s historic conviction, sparing him the cloud of a criminal record and possible prison sentence. Trump is the first former president to be convicted of a crime and the first convicted criminal to be elected to the office. Trump takes office Jan. 20. Merchan hasn’t set a timetable for a decision. Trump team signs agreement to allow Justice to conduct background checks on nominees, staff ZEKE MILLERAssociated Press Merchan could also decide to uphold the verdict and proceed to sentencing, delay the case until Trump leaves office, wait until a federal appeals court rules on Trump’s parallel effort to get the case moved out of state court or choose some other option. Prosecutors cast the payout as part of a Trump-driven effort to keep voters from hearing salacious stories about him. Trump’s then-lawyer Michael Cohen paid Daniels. Trump later reimbursed him, and Trump’s company logged the reimbursements as legal expenses — concealing what they really were, prosecutors alleged. Trump pledged to appeal the verdict if the case is not dismissed. He and his lawyers said the payments to Cohen were properly categorized as legal expenses for legal work. A month after the verdict, the Supreme Court ruled that ex-presidents can’t be prosecuted for official acts — things they did in the course of running the country — and that prosecutors can’t cite those actions to bolster a case centered on purely personal, unofficial conduct. Trump’s lawyers cited the ruling to argue that the hush money jury got some improper evidence, such as Trump’s presidential financial disclosure form, testimony from some White House aides and social media posts made during his first term. Prosecutors disagreed and said the evidence in question was only “a sliver” of their case. If the verdict stands and the case proceeds to sentencing, Trump’s punishments would range from a fine to probation to up to four years in prison — but it’s unlikely he’d spend any time behind bars for a first-time conviction involving charges in the lowest tier of felonies. Because it is a state case, Trump would not be able to pardon himself once he returns to office. Presidential pardons apply only to federal crimes. Arnold was downgraded Saturday from questionable to out because of a groin injury. He was limited at practice on Thursday and participated in a full practice on Friday. The Lions drafted Arnold with the 24th overall pick of the 2024 NFL Draft out of Alabama. Arnold, 21, has started all 10 games and has 38 tackles and six passes defended. Rakestraw (hamstring) was placed on injured reserve after not practicing all week. He already had been ruled out for Sunday's game. Detroit picked Rakestraw in the second round (61st overall) out of Missouri. He has played in eight games and has six tackles. Rakestraw, 22, has played on 46 defensive snaps (8 percent) and 95 special teams snaps (42 percent). Moseley had full practice sessions all week and was activated from injured reserve on Saturday but was listed as questionable for Sunday. The 28-year-old is in his second season with Detroit and appeared in one game last season before going on IR in October 2023. He was placed on IR on Aug. 27 with a designation to return. Moseley played from 2018-22 for the San Francisco 49ers and had 162 tackles, four interceptions -- one returned for a touchdown -- and 33 passes defensed in 46 games (33 starts). Detroit elevated linebacker David Long on Saturday for game day. Long, 28, signed with the practice squad on Tuesday after the Miami Dolphins released him on Nov. 13. He had started six of eight games for the Dolphins this season and had 38 tackles. In other Lions news, the NFL fined wide receiver Jameson Williams $19,697 for unsportsmanlike conduct for making an obscene gesture during a touchdown celebration in last Sunday's 52-6 home win over the Jacksonville Jaguars, the NFL Network reported Saturday. Williams, 23, scored on a 65-yard pass from Jared Goff with 12:55 remaining in the third quarter. --Field Level Media

A Louisiana law that reclassified abortion-inducing drugs as controlled substances has made it more difficult for doctors to treat a wide range of gynecological conditions, doctors say. Now, a similar proposal has been filed in Texas. Texas Rep. Pat Curry, a freshman Republican from Waco, said the intent of House Bill 1339 is to make it harder for people, especially teenagers, to order mifepristone and misoprostol online to terminate their pregnancies. Doctors in Louisiana say the measure has done little to strengthen the state’s near-total abortion ban, but has increased fear and confusion among doctors, pharmacists and patients. “There’s no sense in it,” said Dr. Nicole Freehill, an OB/GYN in New Orleans. “Even though we kept trying to tell them how often [these medications] are used for other things and how safe they are, it didn’t matter. It’s just a backdoor way of restricting abortion more.” These medications are often used to empty the uterus after a patient has a miscarriage, and are commonly prescribed ahead of inserting an intrauterine device. Misoprostol is also often the best treatment for obstetric hemorrhages, a potentially life-threatening condition in which women can bleed to death in minutes. Since the Louisiana law went into effect, hospitals have taken the medication off their obstetrics carts and put them in locked, password-protected central storage. One hospital has been running drills to practice getting the medications to patients in time, and reported, on average, a two minute delay from before the law went into effect, the Louisiana Illuminator reported. “In obstetrics and gynecology, minutes or even seconds can be the difference between life and death,” Dr. Stella Dantas, president of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecologists, said in a statement after the Louisiana law passed. “Forcing a clinician to jump through administrative hurdles in order to access a safe, effective medicine is not medically justified and is, quite simply, dangerous.” Curry said these restrictions won’t stop doctors from prescribing these medications when necessary, but will stop the “wide misuse” of the drugs to circumvent the state’s near-total abortion ban. Curry said he consulted with the author of the Louisiana law, as well as OB/GYNs in Texas to draft the bill. He said the doctors who have criticized the legislation are raising these concerns as a “smokescreen” because they don’t want more restrictions. “I understand that. We don’t need or want all kinds of regulations,” he said. “Especially as Republicans, regulations should not be high on our list, but in this case it’s a necessary evil given the situation.” In March 2022, Mason Herring, a Houston attorney, spiked his wife’s water with misoprostol to force her to have an abortion. Catherine Herring was pregnant with the couple’s third child, a daughter who was born 10 weeks premature. She survived, but has significant developmental delays, according to the Associated Press. Mason Herring was charged with felony assault to induce abortion, and pled guilty to injury to a child and assault to a pregnant person. He was sentenced to 180 days in jail and 10 years of probation. Catherine Herring’s experience led her brother, Louisiana state Rep. Thomas Pressly, to file a bill that would have made it a crime to coerce someone into having an abortion. But at the last minute, the bill was amended to also reclassify abortion-inducing drugs as controlled substances, according to the Louisiana Illuminator, leaving hospitals and doctors scrambling to comply with the new restrictions. The state health department advised storing the medication in a locked area on the crash cart, which at least some hospitals have said is not feasible. “We had to rework how we utilize misoprostol across our hospital systems,” Freehill said. “Labor and delivery, pharmacy, nursing staff, you name it, they were all involved with figuring out how to stay within the law but still use these medications that we need access to.” It’s rare for a state to decide on its own to classify a drug as a controlled substance. Most commonly, the federal government decides which medications should be “scheduled,” based on their medical usefulness and the potential for abuse. Schedule I drugs, like heroin, have no medical use and are often used recreationally; Schedule IV and V are medications that are useful but have a potential for abuse, like Xanax or Valium. There are enhanced penalties for having a controlled substance without a prescription, and increased restrictions on how doctors can dispense them. Pharmacists must report any prescriptions for controlled substances to the state Prescription Monitoring Program, and doctors are required to check the database before prescribing certain controlled substances. Law enforcement also has access to that database. Prescription monitoring has been key to combating the opioid epidemic by identifying doctors who were overprescribing and patients who were getting prescriptions from multiple providers. But with so much political attention on mifepristone and misoprostol as abortion-inducing drugs, doctors are worried about scrutiny for frequently prescribing these common medications. “We had to fix a problem that wasn’t broken,” said Freehill. “There’s no reason for it to be Schedule IV. It’s not something people abuse. It’s not something people can become addicted to. It’s extremely safe.” A group of Louisiana health care providers recently filed a lawsuit arguing the law discriminates against people who need mifepristone and misoprostol for other conditions, and challenging whether the last minute amendments to the bill were proper. Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill has said the new restrictions are clear and should not delay care. Those who “have attempted to sow confusion and doubt,” she said in a statement, “profit from misinformation.” When the law first went into effect, Anna Legreid Dopp, senior director of government relations for the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists, told CNN that the group expected other states to consider similar measures. “Almost immediately, our members raised concern that if this is being done in one state, it can easily be a template for other states to use it,” Dopp said. Curry, who recently won a special election to fill the seat long held by Republican Rep. Doc Anderson, said Pressly and Herring have offered to come testify in support of his bill this session. He anticipates it getting wide support from his fellow lawmakers. Since the overturn of Roe v. Wade, conservative groups have turned their attention to restricting access to abortion-inducing medications. A group of anti-abortion doctors filed a lawsuit to revoke the Food and Drug Administration’s approval of mifepristone, which the U.S. Supreme Court ultimately rejected. Curry said there are reasons to keep these medications on the market beyond abortion, but they need tighter restrictions. “You can lie about your age, you can lie about your name, you can lie about your address, there's no verification whatsoever,” he said, referring to online prescribers. “And it gets shipped to a 15-year-old girl, a 13-year-old girl.” It is already a crime to mail abortion-inducing medications in Texas, and many of the online pharmacies operate in a legal gray area outside U.S jurisdiction. Others are working in states that have “shield laws” that protect doctors’ ability to prescribe and mail pills into states that have banned abortion. None of these interstate and international legal questions have been tested in court with regards to abortion. Freehill said she would encourage Texas doctors to learn from what has happened in Louisiana as they prepare to advocate against this bill this session. “There's a lot of education that needs to be done surrounding what this means and what these drugs are really used for,” she said. “I don’t know that we would have been able to sway people, even with more time, but we can at least educate on why this is completely inappropriate and really governmental overreach.” This article originally appeared in The Texas Tribune at https://www.texastribune.org/2024/11/25/abortion-texas-pills-controlled-substance/ . (The Center Square) — New York City has received a green light from the Biden administration to implement a retooled congestion pricing program, but the plan still faces lawsuits from opponents and anticipated pushback from incoming President-elect Donald Trump. Last Thursday, the Federal Highway Administration approved the Metropolitan Transportation Authority's plan, which Gov. Kathy Hochul resurrected earlier this month with a reduced base fare of $9 – down from the original plan of $15. The program will go into effect on Jan. 5, just days before Trump takes over the presidency. "We are pleased to have received formal approval from the Federal Highway Administration for the phase-in feature of the Central Business District Tolling Program,” Catherine Sheridan, president of MTA Bridges and Tunnels/Triborough Bridge and Tunnel Authority, said in a statement. The controversial tolling program, which was originally set to start June 30, called for a $15 toll on drivers entering the core of Manhattan to generate about $1 billion annually for public transit system upgrades. But in June, Hochul abruptly hit the brakes on congestion pricing, announcing that she directed the MTA to "indefinitely" pause the program. She cited the impact on commuters who would be forced to pay higher tolls. To be sure, the new congestion pricing tolls will eventually increase to the original $15 by 2031, according to the Hochul administration. The MTA said the plan includes discounts for low-income drivers making less than $50,000 annually. These drivers will receive a 50% discount after hitting their 10th toll each month. Meanwhile, the plan faces an uncertain future with several lawsuits, including one filed by New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy and another by the New York Trucking Association, challenging the higher tolling system in state and federal court. CLICK HERE TO READ MORE FROM THE WASHINGTON EXAMINER "While political leadership is now saying the right things about bringing down the cost of living in the state, New Yorkers should not be fooled by the rhetoric: this new congestion pricing plan is still bad for the economy, will still cause supply chain disruptions, and will still raise the price of goods upon which households across the five boroughs and its surrounding suburbs rely," Kendra Hems, the Trucking Association's president, said in a statement. Trump, a Republican and native New Yorker, has pledged to "terminate" the program when he takes over the White House in January. Trump's pick to head the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, former New York congressman Lee Zelden, railed against congestion pricing during his 2022 gubernatorial run.

I worked in for over 10 years, including as a Google consultant, before transitioning to being an associate security engineer at one of the largest banks. Working in the tech industry is stressful — it has extreme volatility, which has led me to feel anxious and depressed in the past. I've seen tech startups very suddenly with zero discussion. I've also worked in big companies and wondered, "Am I next?" High stress also impacted my relationships. My work took up a lot of my personal time, so I wasn't able to build as many relationships as I wish I had. Over the years, I've discovered hacks to mitigate stress, boost my mood, and increase productivity. These are my favorites. I take a 15 to 20-minute or cold shower every morning. The first five minutes are awful and shocking. Then I acclimate to it, and it actually feels really good. During the plunge, I feel extremely alert, the world looks brighter, and when I emerge, everything feels like a new beginning. I was very until I noticed it was severely affecting my mental clarity and focus. Now I try to stay off my phone as much as possible in the morning, and instead, meditate for 25 minutes. Ever since I made the switch, my mind has become quieter and I feel reset from the attention obsession that my digital devices create. I've realized I have to create balance in life by tuning into my body and intuition for guidance. I now listen more to my instincts. One time, I was working on a partnership and felt physically uneasy while reviewing the terms. Looking back, I realize I was sensing a subconscious resistance in my body about this partnership, which ended up going south. I often use my phone as an anxiety and comfort tool. The only way I've had luck mitigating this anxiety is by leaving my phone at home, coming back, and seeing that nothing horrible has happened. Let's say a vendor messes up a project, or the intern accidentally gets spam-attacked and is freaked out. Instead of panicking, I use the psychological strategy of the " ," asking myself, "What can I control in this stressful situation?" If the answer is nothing, I have to let it go. Doing small acts of kindness helps me take the focus off of myself and redirect my energy toward helping others. This can be helping someone at work, volunteering, or simply letting someone in front of me in traffic. At the end of the day, I can say, "Today didn't go super well, but I did something in my control to improve things." I live a privileged life, and it's easy to forget how hard life is for many other people. In my case, I used to have depression. I've seen bad days, but it's easier to forget when I make a . When I zoom out, I can see how lucky I am and that I have a lot to be thankful for. Every evening, around 9 p.m., I take a hot . Epsom salt regulates the nervous system and also staves off loneliness — or so they found in . I do this as a "day ender" to help me officially close out the day. Otherwise, I'll keep working into the night. Before I go to sleep at 10 p.m., I write down everything I'm worrying about as a "brain dump." I put it in a box and revisit it a week later to see how many of them came to pass. Almost do. Over time, I've gained more confidence and calmness. HUNTINGTON, W.V. (AP) — Marshall has withdrawn from the Independence Bowl after a coaching change resulted in much of its roster jumping into the transfer portal. The Thundering Herd were slated to play Army on Dec. 28 in Shreveport, Louisiana. But the Independence Bowl and Louisiana Tech announced on Saturday that the Bulldogs will take on the 19th-ranked Black Knights instead. Marshall said it pulled out “after falling below the roster minimum that was deemed medically safe.” The Herd (10-3) beat Louisiana-Lafayette 31-3 last weekend to win the Sun Belt Conference Championship for the first time. The program has won seven games in a row in the same season for the first time since 2020. “We apologize for the nature and timing of this announcement and for the turmoil it has brought to bowl season preparations for Army, the Radiance Technologies Independence Bowl, the American Athletic Conference and ESPN,” Sun Belt Commissioner Keith Gill said in a statement. Coach Charles Huff left Marshall for Southern Miss last Sunday, and Tony Gibson, the defensive coordinator at North Carolina State, was announced as his replacement less than an hour later. By Thursday, at least 25 Marshall players had entered the transfer portal. Gibson held a meeting shortly after arriving on campus in Huntington to introduce himself to the team. He followed that up with phone calls, text messages and more meetings Friday and Saturday. “Any time coaches leave to take other jobs, it is emotional,” Gibson said at a news conference Thursday. “And kids that are 18-to-22 years old are going to make emotional decisions instead of just breathing for a day or two.” It's the first bowl for Louisiana Tech (5-7) since 2020. The Bulldogs have won two of their last three games, but they haven't played since a 33-0 victory over Kennesaw State on Nov. 30. “We are excited to accept the opportunity to play in the Radiance Technologies Independence Bowl against a fantastic and storied program as Army,” Louisiana Tech athletic director Ryan Ivey said in a release. “I believe our football program is moving toward positive structure and the opportunity to play in this bowl adds to that momentum. We are looking forward to being in Shreveport for this matchup.” Get poll alerts and updates on the AP Top 25 throughout the season. Sign up here . Trump vows to pursue executions after Biden commutes most of federal death rowThailand, South Korea teams to negotiate FTA, says PichaiBy MATTHEW BROWN and JACK DURA BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — Donald Trump assigned Doug Burgum a singular mission in nominating the governor of oil-rich North Dakota to lead an agency that oversees a half-billion acres of federal land and vast areas offshore: “Drill baby drill.” That dictate from the president-elect’s announcement of Burgum for Secretary of Interior sets the stage for a reignition of the court battles over public lands and waters that helped define Trump’s first term, with environmentalists worried about climate change already pledging their opposition. Burgum is an ultra-wealthy software industry entrepreneur who grew up on his family’s farm. He represents a tame choice compared to other Trump Cabinet picks. Public lands experts said his experience as a popular two-term governor who aligns himself with conservationist Teddy Roosevelt suggests a willingness to collaborate, as opposed to dismantling from within the agency he is tasked with leading. That could help smooth his confirmation and clear the way for the incoming administration to move quickly to open more public lands to development and commercial use. “Burgum strikes me as a credible nominee who could do a credible job as Interior secretary,” said John Leshy, who served as Interior’s solicitor under former President Bill Clinton. “He’s not a right-wing radical on public lands,” added Leshy, professor emeritus at the University of California College of the Law, San Francisco. The Interior Department manages about one-fifth of the country’s land with a mandate that spans from wildlife conservation and recreation to natural resource extraction and fulfilling treaty obligations with Native American tribes. Most of those lands are in the West, where frictions with private landowners and state officials are commonplace and have sometimes mushroomed into violent confrontations with right-wing groups that reject federal jurisdiction. Burgum if confirmed would be faced with a pending U.S. Supreme Court action from Utah that seeks to assert state power over Interior Department lands. North Dakota’s attorney general has supported the lawsuit, but Burgum’s office declined to say if he backs Utah’s claims. U.S. Justice Department attorneys on Thursday asked the Supreme Court to reject Utah’s lawsuit. They said Utah in 1894 agreed to give up its right to the lands at issue when it became a state. Trump’s narrow focus on fossil fuels is a replay from his 2016 campaign — although minus coal mining, a collapsing industry that he failed to revive in his first term. Trump repeatedly hailed oil as “liquid gold” on the campaign trail this year and largely omitted any mention of coal. About 26% of U.S. oil comes from federal lands and offshore waters overseen by Interior. Production continues to hit record levels under President Joe Biden despite claims by Trump that the Democrat hindered drilling. But industry representatives and their Republican allies say volumes could be further boosted. They want Burgum and the Interior Department to ramp up oil and gas sales from federal lands, in the Gulf of Mexico and offshore Alaska. The oil industry also hopes Trump’s government efficiency initiative led by billionaire Elon Musk can dramatically reduce environmental reviews. Biden’s administration reduced the frequency and size of lease sales, and it restored environmental rules that were weakened under Trump . The Democrat as a candidate in 2020 promised further restrictions on drilling to help combat global warming, but he struck a deal for the 2022 climate bill that requires offshore oil and gas sales to be held before renewable energy leases can be sold. “Oil and gas brings billions of dollars of revenue in, but you don’t get that if you don’t have leasing,” said Erik Milito with the National Ocean Industries Association, which represents offshore industries including oil and wind. Trump has vowed to kill offshore wind energy projects. But Milito said he was hopeful that with Burgum in place it would be “green lights ahead for everything, not just oil and gas.” It is unclear if Burgum would revive some of the most controversial steps taken at the agency during Trump’s first term, including relocating senior officials out of Washington, D.C., dismantling parts of the Endangered Species Act and shrinking the size of two national monuments in Utah designated by former President Barack Obama. Officials under Biden spent much of the past four years reversing Trump’s moves. They restored the Utah monuments and rescinded numerous Trump regulations. Onshore oil and gas lease sales plummeted — from more than a million acres sold annually under Trump and other previous administrations, to just 91,712 acres (37,115 hectares) sold last year — while many wind and solar projects advanced. Developing energy leases takes years, and oil companies control millions of acres that remain untapped. Biden’s administration also elevated the importance of conservation in public lands decisions, adopting a rule putting it more on par with oil and gas development. They proposed withdrawing parcels of land in six states from potential future mining to protect a struggling bird species, the greater sage grouse. North Dakota is among Republican states that challenged the Biden administration’s public lands rule. The states said in a June lawsuit that officials acting to prevent climate change have turned laws meant to facilitate development into policies that obstruct drilling, livestock grazing and other uses. Oil production boomed over the past two decades in North Dakota thanks in large part to better drilling techniques. Burgum has been an industry champion and last year signed a repeal of the state’s oil tax trigger — a price-based tax hike industry leaders supported removing. Burgum’s office declined an interview request. In a statement after his nomination, Burgum echoed Trump’s call for U.S. “energy dominance” in the global market. The 68-year-old governor also said the Interior post offered an opportunity to improve government relations with developers, tribes, landowners and outdoor enthusiasts “with a focus on maximizing the responsible use of our natural resources with environmental stewardship for the benefit of the American people.” Related Articles National Politics | Trump convinced Republicans to overlook his misconduct. Burgum has worked with tribes in his state, including on oil development. Badlands Conservation Alliance director Shannon Straight in Bismarck, North Dakota, said Burgum has also been a big supporter of tourism in North Dakota and outdoor activities such as hunting and fishing. Yet Straight said that hasn’t translated into additional protections for land in the state. “Theodore Roosevelt had a conservation ethic, and we talk and hold that up as a beautiful standard to live by,” he said. “We haven’t seen it as much on the ground. ... We need to recognize the landscape is only going to be as good as some additional protections.” Burgum has been a cheerleader of the planned Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library in Medora, North Dakota. Brown reported from Billings, Montana.

WhatsApp ditches 'Typing' indicator for animated bubble, users not happyTEMPE, Ariz. (AP) — Caleb McCullough was there for the dark times at Arizona State, when the losses piled up and the cloud of an NCAA investigation was hovering over the program. The senior linebacker opted to stick around, believing in coach Kenny Dillingham's vision for a better future. It came sooner than anyone outside the program expected. "I’m doing whatever I can to win,” McCullough said. “I’m not really a stat player. This is my last year of college and my main goal is just to win.” The Sun Devils are doing just that, becoming one of college football's biggest surprises along the way. Picked to finish last in its first Big 12 season, Arizona State (8-2, 5-2 Big 12) now controls its destiny for a spot in the conference title game. The 21st-ranked Sun Devils have already clinched their first bowl berth since 2021, the year they were last ranked in the AP Top 25 before this week. Arizona State has taken down two ranked teams this season, 27-19 over then-No. 16 Utah on Oct. 11 and 24-14 at then-No. 20 Kansas State last weekend. The Sun Devils will play their biggest home game in recent memory against No. 14 BYU on Saturday , the first home game between ranked teams in Tempe since 2014. Beat the Cougars and Arizona State can clinch a spot in the Big 12 Championship on Dec. 7 in Arlington, Texas, with a win over rival Arizona in the regular-season finale. “It means a lot to these guys to come in here with that chip on their shoulder and do something that really nobody thought we could do,” Dillingham said. Arizona State faced adversity on and off the field when Dillingham arrived in 2023. After winning eight games in 2021, the Sun Devils went 3-9 the following year while under investigation by the NCAA, a combination that led to the firing of Herm Edwards during his fifth season here. Dillingham had success as Oregon's offensive coordinator and brought the requisite enthusiasm of being a young — he was 32 at the time — first-time head coach returning to his alma mater. Despite rallying the community around the program, Dillingham fell into hard luck his first season in the desert. The Sun Devils were decimated by injuries, particularly at quarterback, and never recovered, finishing 3-9 for the second straight season. But Dillingham had the pieces in place. He proved to be adept at finding the right players through the transfer portal, landing former Sacramento State running back Cam Skattebo two years ago and former Michigan State quarterback Sam Leavitt prior to this season. The hard-running Skattebo has been one of the nation's best running backs and Leavitt has been a perfect fit for Arizona State's offense, making good decisions while extending plays with his legs. The portal success extends across Arizona State's roster and Dillingham has sprinkled in solid recruiting classes while convincing key players to remain, a combination that's meshed into a team that could crash the College Football Playoff if the pieces fall just right. “We were a three-win team twice,” Dillingham said. “We were under NCAA sanctions. Most head coaches, to be brutally honest, get fired if you take a job under sanctions. You don’t survive. You’re hired to be fired. That’s the nature of the beast and right now we’re sitting here at 8-2, and I couldn’t be prouder." Dillingham's vision for a better future, one the rest of the country didn't see coming, is here and now. UCLA football team’s Senior Day hints at some Bruins’ futures

This is what we know about Arizona’s men's basketball team through seven often painful games: Who is the best player? Ummmm. Who is the starting center? Ummmm. Who is the go-to shooter? Ummmm. Who is the defensive stopper? Ummmm. Are transfers Trey Townsend , Anthony Dell’Orso and Tobe Awaka any better than previous (underwhelming) transfers Chase Jeter , Ryan Luther and Stone Gettings ? Ummmm. Of 16 Big 12 teams, who is the only team with a losing record? Uh, Arizona. Is Arizona tough enough to successfully run the Big 12 gauntlet? Ummmm. What is the worst statistic of the first seven games (other than three losses)? When Arizona trailed West Virginia 59-49 Friday, the Mountaineers had 19 points off turnovers. Arizona? Zero. Arizona lost to West Virginia, 83-76, Friday at the Battle 4 Atlantis tournament, dropping to its first losing record in 15 years. A polite way to describe Tommy Lloyd’ s fourth Arizona team is that it is a work in progress. It has four nonconference games until Big 12 competition begins on Dec. 30 to address and fix issues related to (a) chemistry, (b) perimeter defense, (c) offensive flow, (d) clutch shooting, (e) interior offense and (f) a personnel rotation that has been choppy. There is also a long-range problem. When the NCAA Selection Committee determines its March Madness field for 2025, Arizona’s November stumbles will carry weight. What many thought would be a 10-1 or 9-2 nonconference season will likely end up 6-5, unless Arizona beats a 6-1 UCLA team Dec. 14 in Phoenix. After that, a brutal 20-game Big 12 schedule appears so menacing — no gimmes, not even ASU at McKale — that a 10-10 finish might be a generous forecast for the Wildcats. That would put Arizona at something close to 17-15 on Selection Sunday. Good news: Of the last 60 Big 12 teams that finished .500 or better in the conference games, 59 made the NCAA Tournament. A historic parallel: One of Lute Olson’ s most troublesome starts was in the 1989-90 season. The Wildcats faced a rare Nov. 30/Dec. 2 start to the Pac-10 season, losing on the road at Oregon and getting blown out 84-61 at Oregon State against Gary Payton . It was such a bad start — there was just one nonconference game before the Oregon trip — that Olson was assessed a technical foul at halftime of the OSU game for kicking a basketball lying nearby, running up to it like an NFL place-kicker, and barely ticking it off his foot. He almost stumbled and fell. Yes, it was a bad start. Worse, extremely difficult road games against Duke, UNLV and Pitt awaited. Arizona lost all three. Yet in March, the Wildcats were Pac-10 champs, 25-7 overall, earning a No. 2 seed in the NCAA Tournament thanks to the continued development of first-year starters Jud Buechler , Sean Rooks and Matt Othick . As Tommy Lloyd hopes to find over the next three months, missing a few buckets early in the season — or, as Lute Olson in 1989, a kick — doesn’t have to be costly in March. No. 9 SMU aims to improve playoff odds vs. CalSEATTLE (AP) — It wasn’t pretty, but the Seattle Seahawks pulled off a 6-3 slog of a victory Thursday over the Chicago Bears. The win featured an outstanding effort from Seattle's defense, a near disappearance from the offense and a game-sealing pick that ended Caleb Williams' rookie record for the most pass attempts without an interception at 353. The Seahawks sacked Williams seven times to tie the team’s season high as the Bears lost their 10th consecutive game in the lowest scoring contest of the season. The Bears had a chance to pull off an upset when they had the ball at Seattle's 40-yard line late in the fourth quarter, but Seahawks cornerback Riq Woolen picked off Williams with 20 seconds left. It was a nice bounce-back win for Seattle, but had little impact on their postseason outlook. The more important game will come Saturday, when the Los Angeles Rams and Arizona Cardinals face off with Seattle’s postseason fortunes on the line. A win by Arizona keeps the Seahawks in the hunt — but still needing a win over the Rams next weekend to clinch the NFC West. A Rams win this weekend would dash Seattle’s hopes as Los Angeles would win the tiebreaker over Seattle even if the Seahawks win the regular-season finale. “We’re in the mode of controlling what we can control,” coach Mike Macdonald said. “We know what’s coming next week. We’re going to spend this weekend getting our minds and bodies and spirits right to go play a game. "Yeah, we’re praying that it’s for the division championship.” What’s working Leonard Williams continues to be a force for the Seahawks. The defensive tackle dominated the Bears' offensive line with two of Seattle’s seven sacks, four quarterback hits and three tackles for loss. Williams been the key to Seattle’s defensive resurgence. A unit that was among the worst in the league earlier in the season has become one of the NFL's most productive in the second half with Williams' big-time impact up front being a major reason Seattle is still in the playoff hunt. “He should be up for all the accolades,” Macdonald said. “I don’t know what the awards are out there, but I would give it to him,” Macdonald said. “He’s just a phenomenal player, phenomenal human being. I’m glad he’s a Seahawk. Glad he’s with us.” What needs help Seattle’s offense was full of stops and starts, but two field goals proved to be enough. Geno Smith managed just 160 passing yards and nearly threw yet another interception in the red zone on Seattle’s first drive of the game. Zach Charbonnet and Kenny McIntosh combined for 103 yards on 22 carries, with McIntosh’s 25-yard first-quarter run marking Seattle’s longest offensive play of the day. Charbonnet, starting in place of the injured Kenneth Walker III, was held to just 3.8 yards per carry. Offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb has spent the season trying to figure out how to get the running game going, with little success. Stock up The Seahawks' defense put up a lockdown performance after struggling in losses against Green Bay and Minnesota, holding the Bears to just 179 yards of total offense and finishing with 10 quarterback hits. Along with Leonard Williams big day, Devon Witherspoon had six tackles with a sack and three tackles for loss as the Seahawks recaptured some of the momentum it had lost the past two weeks. Under constant pressure from Seattle’s pass rush, Caleb Williams threw for 122 yards, while completing 16 of 28 pass attempts. Stock down WR DK Metcalf. He had a tough day, with just three receptions for 43 yards. He also drew a pair of personal fouls on a single play, one coming after he head-butted Bears cornerback Tyrique Stevenson in the second quarter. Metcalf hasn’t had more than 70 yards receiving in a game since Seattle’s win over Atlanta on Oct. 20. He has only had more than four receptions in three games this year, and has just four touchdown catches in what has been a bit of a disappointing season for the sixth-year receiver. Injuries The Seahawks put Walker (ankle) on injured reserve Thursday, marking the end of his regular season. Walker has to miss at least the next four games, but could return if Seattle makes it deep into the playoffs. Key number 7 — Seattle’s seven sacks made it 67 on the year for Caleb Williams, 15 more than any other quarterback in the league and fourth-most in league history. Up next The Seahawks finish the regular season at the Los Angeles Rams on either Jan. 4 or 5. ___ AP NFL: https://apnews.com/hub/nfl Shane Lantz, The Associated Press

Pam Bondi, Donald Trump's pick to be attorney general, is a staunch ally of the former president, defending him against impeachment during his first term and pushing his false claims of election fraud as he sought to cling on to the White House. The 59-year-old former Florida attorney general, if confirmed by the Senate, will now serve as the top law enforcement official in a second Trump administration. "For too long, the partisan Department of Justice has been weaponized against me and other Republicans -- Not anymore," Trump wrote on his Truth Social network. "Pam will refocus the DOJ to its intended purpose of fighting Crime, and Making America Safe Again." Bondi's nomination means the top ranks of the Justice Department will be filled by Trump loyalists, as the president-elect has named three of the lawyers who defended him in his multiple criminal cases to its other high-ranking roles. Trump tapped Bondi to be attorney general on Thursday after his first pick, firebrand ex-Florida lawmaker Matt Gaetz, dropped out amid sexual misconduct allegations and doubts that he could obtain Senate confirmation. A graduate of the University of Florida with a law degree from Stetson University, Bondi served as a prosecutor for 18 years before being elected attorney general of the "Sunshine State" in 2010, the first woman to hold the post. Bondi, a native of Trump's adopted home state of Florida, was reelected to a second term in 2014. As attorney general, Bondi notably fought opioid addiction and human trafficking while taking a tough stance on crime and supporting the death penalty. She sued BP for the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico and obtained more than $2 billion in economic relief for Florida, according to her biography page at Ballard Partners, a powerful lobbying firm where she has worked after leaving office. While serving as attorney general, Bondi was drawn into a controversy involving Trump when she declined in 2013 to join a multi-state prosecution accusing Trump University of fraud. It emerged later that Bondi's reelection committee had received a $25,000 donation from the charitable Trump Foundation. Both Trump and Bondi denied any wrongdoing. Bondi joined Trump's legal team during his first impeachment trial, in which he was alleged to have pressured Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to find political dirt on his 2020 election opponent, Democrat Joe Biden. Trump was impeached by the Democrat-controlled House of Representatives but acquitted by the Republican-majority Senate. After the 2020 election, Bondi made television appearances on behalf of Trump and pushed to de-legitimize vote counting in battleground states as part of the push by the former president to overturn the results of the vote. Bondi has also criticized the criminal cases brought against Trump, appearing in solidarity at his New York trial, where he was convicted of falsifying business records to cover up hush money payments to a porn star. Kane Crichlow Scores Twice For ChelmsfordPresident-elect Donald Trump on Saturday threatened 100% tariffs against a bloc of nine nations if they act to undermine the U.S. dollar. His threat was directed at countries in the so-called BRIC alliance, which consists of Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran and the United Arab Emirates. Turkey, Azerbaijan and Malaysia have applied to become members and several other countries have expressed interest in joining. While the U.S. dollar is by far the most-used currency in global business and has survived past challenges to its preeminence, members of the alliance and other developing nations say they are fed up with America’s dominance of the global financial system. Trump, in a Truth Social post, said: “We require a commitment from these Countries that they will neither create a new BRICS Currency, nor back any other Currency to replace the mighty U.S. Dollar or, they will face 100% Tariffs, and should expect to say goodbye to selling into the wonderful U.S. Economy." At a summit of BRIC nations in October, Russian President Vladimir Putin accused the U.S. of “weaponizing” the dollar and described it as a “big mistake.” “It’s not us who refuse to use the dollar,” Putin said at the time. “But if they don’t let us work, what can we do? We are forced to search for alternatives.” Russia has specifically pushed for the creation of a new payment system that would offer an alternative to the global bank messaging network, SWIFT, and allow Moscow to dodge Western sanctions and trade with partners. Trump said there is "no chance" BRIC will replace the U.S. dollar in global trade and any country that tries to make that happen "should wave goodbye to America.”

"Last night and this morning, several of President Trump's Cabinet nominees and Administration appointees were targeted in violent, unAmerican threats to their lives and those who live with them. These attacks ranged from bomb threats to 'swatting.' In response, law enforcement and other authorities acted quickly to ensure the safety of those who were targeted. President Trump and the entire Transition team are grateful for their swift action," Trump-Vance Transition Spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt said in a statement. A swatting attack involves a perpetrator issuing a fake call to emergency services that results in large numbers of armed police officers being dispatched to a target's address. It's intended to harass and terrify the victim. Among those targeted were New York Rep. Elise Stefanik, Trump’s pick to serve as the next ambassador to the United Nations; Matt Gaetz, Trump’s initial pick to serve as attorney general who has withdrawn from consideration; and former New York Rep. Lee Zeldin, who has been tapped to lead the Environmental Protection Agency. Zeldin said in a social media post that he and his family had been threatened. “A pipe bomb threat targeting me and my family at our home today was sent in with a pro-Palestinian themed message,” he wrote on X. A pipe bomb threat targeting me and my family at our home today was sent in with a pro-Palestinian themed message. My family and I were not home at the time and are safe. We are working with law enforcement to learn more as this situation develops. We are thankful for the swift... Susie Wiles, Trump's incoming chief of staff, and Pam Bondi, the former Florida attorney general whom Trump has chosen as Gaetz's replacement, were also targeted, according to a law enforcement official. The FBI said it was “aware of numerous bomb threats and swatting incidents targeting incoming administration nominees and appointees" and was investigating. The dangerous threats follow a political campaign marked by disturbing violence including the near assassination of former President Trump at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, and a second assassination attempt in Florida that was narrowly prevented. This year, there was not just one but TWO assassination attempts on President Trump. Now some of his Cabinet nominees and their families are facing bomb threats. This is dangerous and unhinged.
