BUENOS AIRES, Argentina (AP) — Botafogo overcame playing with 10 men to win its first Copa Libertadores title after beating fellow Brazilian side Atletico Mineiro 3-1 in the final at Monumental de Nunez Stadium on Saturday. After just 30 seconds, midfielder Gregore, one of Botafogo's best players, hit the head of Fausto Vera with his foot and was given a straight red card. Winger Luiz Henrique scored first in the 35th minute from close range, and was fouled for the penalty shot converted by Alex Telles in the 44th. Eduardo Vargas headed Mineiro's only goal in the 46th while Junior Santos, the top scorer in the Copa Libertadores with 10 goals, capped Botafogo's historic night with the third in injury time. Brazil was assured of a sixth consecutive Copa Libertadores title and its 24th in history, just one less than Argentina. It was also the third straight title for Rio de Janeiro clubs, after Fluminense in 2023 and Flamengo in 2022. Despite sensationally losing Gregore, Botafogo reset and Luiz Henrique scored the opener. Henrique surged on the right flank and crossed to Marlon Freitas, who took a shot that was deflected. Henrique was in the right place to strike through the legs of goalkeeper Ederson. Henrique and Ederson met again near the end of the first half when the striker surprised the keeper on the edge of the box. A penalty was given after a video review and left back Telles calmly slotted the ball. Mineiro came back with a more aggressive formation in the second half and was rewarded when veteran Hulk took a corner kick and Vargas, who replaced midfielder Gustavo Scarpa during the break, didn’t even need to jump to score with his head. Mineiro had more chances to equalize through Deyverson in the 53rd, Hulk in the 56th, and Vargas in the 86th and 88th, all from close range. But it was Botafogo’s Júnior Santos, who was sidelined by injury during the Copa, who scored the last goal. Botafogo coach Arthur Jorge joined Portuguese compatriots Jorge Jesus (Flamengo, 2019) and Abel Ferreira (Palmeiras, 2020 and 2021) as European coaches with a Copa Libertadores title. Mineiro's Gabriel Milito missed the chance to be the first Argentine to win the tournament with a Brazilian club. Botafogo also gave American owner John Textor his biggest trophy yet. Textor has been subject to criticism after unproven allegations about match-fixing when Botafogo squandered a 13-point lead last year and missed out on the league title. Next week, his team could win its first Brazilian title since 1995. Botafogo was relegated from the league in 2020 but has risen to prominence again with Textor’s investment. He was part of a wave of foreign owners who came into Brazilian soccer after a 2021 law change paved the way for private investors. Mineiro also has wealthy owner in Brazilian billionaire Rubens Menin, a construction mogul. AP soccer: https://apnews.com/hub/soccer

Credit: Adobe Stock/ onephoto A study found schizophrenia and major depressive disorder (MDD) increase the risk of constipation , but the association with schizophrenia may only have limited clinical implications. 1 “Similar to previous studies, the risk of constipation was higher in participants with severe depression than in participants with mild depression,” wrote investigators, led by Jiali Liu, from the department of anorectal surgery at Affiliated Hospital of Nanjing University of Chinese Medicine, in People’s Republic of China. Constipation, although common, is one of the most difficult diseases to diagnose and treat. According to the American Gastroenterological Association, 16% of adults face constipation. This gastrointestinal disorder has a greater prevalence in older adults, females, certain medications, and mental diseases. Observational studies have shown the link between constipation and psychiatric disorders, namely anxiety and depression, but these studies did not examine the causal effects between the conditions. 2 Thus, investigators completed a Mendelian randomization analysis to assess whether constipation and psychiatric disorders—in this case, schizophrenia and MDD—had a causal relationship. 1 The study’s exposures were schizophrenia and MDD, and constipation was the outcome. The team recruited patients with schizophrenia (30,490 cases and 312,009 controls) and MDD (170,756 cases and 329,443 controls) from Psychiatric Genomics Consortium datasets of European ancestry. Constipation genetic data (17,246 cases and 201,546 controls) was obtained from The FinnGen summary statistics. Investigators used the inverse variance weighted (IVW) method to assess the causal relationship between schizophrenia and MDD with constipation. The LD score regression showed constipation was genetically correlated with schizophrenia and MDD (both P < .05). The Mendelian randomization analysis further demonstrated that schizophrenia (IVW odds ratio [OR], 1.05; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.02 – 1.07; P < .01) and MDD (IVW OR, 1.21; 95% CI, 1.10 – 1.33; P < .01) were statistically significantly causally associated with the risk of constipation. Evidence of the causal relationship between constipation and psychiatric disorders was also shown with the MR Egger ratio (OR, 1.03; 95% CI, 0.93 – 1.16; P = .548 for schizophrenia; OR, 0.92; 95% CI, 0.48 – 1.76; P = .794 for MDD) and the weighted median odds ratio (OR, 1.05; 95% CI, 1.01 – 1.09; P < .01 for schizophrenia; OR, 1.19; 95% CI, 1.03 – 1.38; P = .02). “Bidirectional MR analysis revealed an obviously causal effect of depression on constipation, but no causal effect of constipation on depression,” investigators wrote. However, investigators noted that constipation could aggravate psychotic disorders, as patients with constipation were significantly more likely to experience depression, anxiety, somatization, and psychotic disorders. The Cohran’s Q report did not show heterogeneity among these inverse variances for both schizophrenia ( P = .11 > .05) and MDD ( P = .09 > .05). Investigators also observed no horizontal pleiotropy in the Egger intercept test for schizophrenia ( P = .81) and MDD ( P = .39). Despite schizophrenia having a statistically significant confidence interval of 1.02 – 1.07 ( P < .01), it fell within the Region of Bayesian analysis and the Practical Equivalence (ROPE), which defines an odds ratio range of 0.83 – 1.19 as a lack of clinical significance. “This suggested that the hypothesized pathophysiological links between [schizophrenia] and constipation conditions were not substantiated by our data, prompting a reevaluation of their clinical implications,” investigators wrote. Liu and colleagues said the study was limited by only examining the Psychiatric Genomics Consortium and FinnGen populations. Moreover, they added that they only examined schizophrenia and MDD due to the unavailable data on other psychiatric disorders and future studies should include other mental conditions. “In conclusion, we performed MR analysis concluding that there is suggestive evidence that [schizophrenia] and MDD potentially cause constipation,” investigators wrote. “However, [schizophrenia] and constipation, largely falling within the ROPE range, underscore a lack of clinical significance, and further confirmation is needed in conjunction with clinical studies.” References Liu J, Huang Y, Fu X, Wei J, Wei P. SEOUL, South Korea — North Korean leader Kim Jong Un vowed his country will “invariably support” Russia’s war on Ukraine as he met Russia’s defense chief, the North’s state media reported Saturday. A Russia military delegation led by Defense Minister Andrei Belousov arrived in North Korea on Friday, amid growing international concern about the two countries’ expanding cooperation after North Korea sent thousands of troops to Russia in October. The official Korean Central News Agency said that Kim and Belousov reached “a satisfactory consensus” on boosting strategic partnership and defending each country’s sovereignty, security interests and international justice in the face of the rapidly changing international security environments. Kim said that North Korea “will invariably support the policy of the Russian Federation to defend its sovereignty and territorial integrity from the imperialists’ moves for hegemony,” the state media agency said. North Korea has supported Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, calling it a defensive response to what both Moscow and Pyongyang call NATO’s “reckless” eastward advance and U.S.-led moves to stamp out Russia’s position as a powerful state. Kim slammed a U.S. decision earlier in November to let Ukraine strike targets inside Russia with U.S.-supplied longer-range missiles as a direct intervention in the conflict. He called recent Russian strikes on Ukraine “a timely and effective measure” to demonstrate Russia’s resolve, KCNA said. According to U.S., Ukrainian and South Korean assessments, North Korea has sent more than 10,000 troops to Russia and some of them have already begun engaging in combat on the front lines. The U.S., South Korea and others say North Korea has also shipped artillery systems, missiles and other conventional weapons to replenish Russia’s exhausted weapons inventory. North Korea and Russia haven’t formally confirmed the North Korean troops’ movements, and have denied reports of weapons shipments. South Korea, the U.S. and their partners are concerned that Russia could give North Korea advanced weapons technology in return, including help to build more powerful nuclear missiles. South Korean national security advisor Shin Wonsik recently said Seoul assessed that Russia has provided air defense missile systems to North Korea. He told a local SBS TV program that Russia also appeared to have given economic assistance to North Korea and various military technologies, including those needed for the North’s efforts to build a reliable space-based surveillance system. Belousov also met North Korean Defense Minister No Kwang Chol on Friday. During a dinner banquet later the same day, Belousov said the two countries’ strategic partnership was crucial to defend their sovereignty from aggression and the arbitrary actions of imperialists, North Korean state media said. In June, Kim and Putin signed a treaty requiring both countries to provide immediate military assistance if either is attacked . It’s considered the two countries’ biggest defense deal since the end of the Cold War. Kim writes for the Associated Press.

Wyndhamvale-based Stewy the Snake Catcher wrote on Facebook that snakes were at risk of overheating during summer, because they cannot regulate their body temperature. "A snake's optimum temperature range is anywhere between 18 degrees to 30 degrees. Any hotter than that and they can really struggle," he said. READ MORE: Where is Assad?
