Middle East latest: Israel bombs Lebanon's capital as Netanyahu considers a ceasefire with HezbollahTrump making 'joke' about Canada becoming 51st state is 'reassuring': Ambassador HillmanAlan Wake 2 set such a high technical bar last year that few games in 2024 came anywhere near, but it wasn't all abject disappointmentDecember's Pixel Drop includes a new feature called Simple View. Late last week, Google announced the December Pixel Drop in a blog post penned by product marketing manager Mayra Fajardo. The Android software update includes the Expressive Captions feature, which I covered last week by interviewing Google’s Angana Ghosh. “The latest Pixel Drop brings more intelligent, helpful and intuitive features to your devices, with new ways to use Gemini, camera improvements and security updates,” Fajardo wrote in the post’s lede. “Better yet, it brings some favorite features to more countries.” Among the new features in this month’s Pixel Drop, which includes emoji updates to Gboard and updates to Pixel Screenshots, is an update to the Lookout app on Android that sees the software gain support for Arabic, as well as automatic language detection, nicer-sounding voices, and notably, help from Google’s Gemini AI models to power its image description and Q&A modes. Google introduced Lookout in 2019 as a way to enable people to “discover [their] surroundings” with assistance from AI. The app was primarily built to help Blind and low vision people better access the world, much in the same vein as Be My Eyes. In fact, Lookout and Be My Eyes are conceptually identical—Be My Eyes sets itself apart by enlisting the support of sighted volunteers to help users better comprehend their surroundings, whereas Lookout relies on AI. Elsewhere, Fajardo detailed a feature Google calls Simple View. According to Fajardo, the feature is a new way for someone to navigate their phone by “[increasing] your phone’s font size and touch sensitivity, making it easier to see and use controls, apps and widgets.” Google says Simple View, available on Pixel 6 and later, can be beneficial to older adults. Simple View is conceptually akin to Assistive Access in iOS , which Apple introduced as a new accessibility feature in iOS 17. The implementations differ—Assistive Access is far more stripped down in terms of the user interface—but the basic premise between it and Simple view are shared. Both have been designed to make the respective platforms easier and more accessible to navigate. As Google mentioned, this simplification can be a boon to older people, who may be less technically savvy and thus are more intimidated by technology.
The stock market can be confusing, with ups and downs that seem daunting. Let’s break down what’s been happening with the Nifty, a popular stock index. 1. Highs and Lows Nifty hit an all-time high of 26,216 points. It dropped to 23,349 points, a fall of about 2,967 points or 11.37% from the high. It rose again to 24,221 points, recovering 872 points from its recent low. 2. Nifty is now 1,995 points below its all-time high, which is about 7.60% down. Trusted advisory services can help you make informed decisions, ensuring you handle the market’s ups and downs wisely. Here’s a simplified estimation of a ₹10 lakh investment after 20 years at different interest rates, focusing on how many times it multiplies: 1. 12% Annual Return: Grows approximately 10 times. Maturity = ₹1 crore. 2. 15% Annual Return: Grows approximately 16 times. Maturity = ₹1.6 crore. 3. 20% Annual Return: Grows approximately 38 times. Maturity = ₹3.8 crore. 4. 22% Annual Return: Grows approximately 51 times. Maturity = ₹5.1 crore. These are rough estimates to give you an idea of the growth. In summary, understand that the market will always fluctuate. No. 2 Ohio State takes control in the 2nd half and runs over No. 5 Indiana 38-15The north’s ‘transport minister’ Erhan Arikli on Tuesday night called for ‘parliamentary’ elections to be held “as soon as possible” . Speaking to Genc TV, he built on earlier comments made by himself and other ‘ministers’ regarding the year ahead, saying “there are problems coming in 2025 and urgent and strict policies are needed”. He then added, “let’s have elections as soon as possible. We will talk about this in the coming days. What we could not do is more than what we did. We will evaluate this within the government.” He was then keen to differentiate himself and his party the YDP from the UBP, the north’s three-party ruling coalition’s largest party. “ They say a government partner should not complain, but I am not just an ordinary UBP MP or minister . I am a partner in this government. My party will be held accountable when we have elections. I will continue to criticise what I see as wrong,” he said. He added, “no one should take offence, I will also discuss this in cabinet. There is a habit from the past whereby people say, ‘the coalition is a whole, no one can speak out’. What has that got to do with anything?” That criticism came in the form of a list of “many deficiencies” in the current ‘government’ as described by Arikli. “Information technology laws, election laws, public service reforms ... there are 70 or 80 pieces of legislation we could not put forward . We need to sit down and talk again when the budget is passed. The people will ask to hold us to account in an election,” he said. Arikli’s comments build on statements he made last week, when he said there would be a “ great benefit ” for the ruling coalition’s three parties to hold elections as soon as possible because “2025 will be a very difficult year for all of us, especially for the government”. Those comments came just a day after the ruling coalition’s ‘parliamentary’ majority fell to just six, after ‘MP’ Hasan Tosunoglu left the ruling coalition’s other party, the DP . Tosunoglu was one of three ‘MPs’ from the DP elected at the ‘parliamentary’ elections in January 2022 and remained on the backbenches throughout the almost three years since then, but spoke of a disillusionment with his party’s direction. He said his party has become “silent, apolitical, and without an attitude”, with the party’s political platform in recent years having grown ever closer to that of the UBP. Arikli is also not the only ‘minister’ who has spoken of tough times ahead for Turkish Cypriots, with ‘economy minister’ Olgun Amcaoglu having said last month that 2025 will be “ much more difficult ” economically than previous years.
Geordie Shore star Charlotte Crosby said she has been admitted to hospital but her baby is “all fine” after masked men attempted to rob her home this week. Her fiance Jake Ankers announced on social media that a group of men carrying a machete entered their home on Thursday evening while they were in the house with their two-year-old daughter. Crosby, who is nearly eight months pregnant, thanked those who have sent their support to the couple in an Instagram Story post on Saturday. The reality TV star, 34, wrote: “I’m typing this I’m laid in hospital. Baby is all fine, thank you for all the messages!” She added: “This month has had misfortune after misfortune. I want to thank you all for your kind messages about the break-in the other night. “Still something I’m really struggling to come to terms with.” Ankers also posted a photo of Crosby lying in a hospital bed to his Instagram Story, saying she had been “rushed in to hospital” as the TV star had been experiencing “serious pains in her stomach”. The businessman thanked their followers for reaching out and their local community for being “fantastic” since the burglary attempt. Ankers, who appeared with the reality star on BBC Three reality show Charlotte In Sunderland, previously said the thieves “tried to rob my house with my two-year-old and my partner who is nearly eight months pregnant, armed with a machete”. He said one of the four men “had a red balaclava on” and was carrying the weapon at the top of the stairs. Durham Constabulary were alerted at 7pm on Thursday to reports of an aggravated burglary in Houghton-le-Spring, a town in the Sunderland area. A spokeswoman for the force said: “Officers attended the area however the suspects left the scene before their arrival. “Nobody was injured in the incident and no items are believed to have been taken.” She added that an investigation is under way and anyone with information is asked to contact police. Crosby is best known for appearing in the MTV reality series Geordie Shore and winning the 12th series of Celebrity Big Brother in 2013. She and Ankers got engaged in October 2023 after she gave birth to their first child in 2022.GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP) — DJ Lagway threw two touchdown passes, Montrell Johnson ran for 127 yards and a score, and Florida upset No. 9 Mississippi 24-17 on Saturday to knock the Rebels out of College Football Playoff contention. The Gators (6-5, 4-4 Southeastern Conference), who topped LSU last week, beat ranked teams in consecutive weeks for the first time since 2008 and became bowl eligible. The late-season spurt provided another vote of confidence for coach Billy Napier, who is expected back for a fourth season. Ole Miss (8-3, 4-3), which entered the day as a 10-point favorite, lost for the first time in four games and surely will drop out of the 12-team playoff picture. The Rebels ranked ninth in the latest CFP and needed only to avoid stumbling down the stretch against Florida and lowly Mississippi State to clinch a spot in the playoff field. But coach Lane Kiffin’s team failed to score in three trips inside the red zone and dropped countless passes in perfect weather. The Ducks beat Ohio State back on Oct. 12. The Hoosiers (10-1, 7-1, No. 5 CFP) had their best chance to beat the Buckeyes for the first time since 1988 but were hurt by special teams mistakes and disrupted by an Ohio State defense that sacked quarterback Kurtis Rourke five times. Howard finished 22 for 26 for 201 yards. Emeka Egbuka had seven catches for 80 yards and a TD. No. 8 GEORGIA 59, UMass 21 ATHENS, Ga. (AP) — Carson Beck threw four touchdown passes, Nate Frazier ran for 136 yards with three scores and No. 8 Georgia overwhelmed Massachusetts as the Bulldogs tried to protect their College Football Playoff hopes. Georgia (9-2, No. 10 CFP) needed the big offense from Beck and Frazier to rescue a defense that gave up 226 rushing yards. UMass (2-9) played its first game under interim coach Shane Montgomery, the offensive coordinator who retained his play-calling duties after replacing on Monday. Jalen John led the Minutemen with 107 rushing yards and a touchdown. Georgia extended its streak of consecutive home wins to 30, the longest active streak in the Football Bowl Subdivision. No. 10 TENNESSEE 56, UTEP 0 KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Nico Iamaleava threw for 209 yards and four touchdowns to lead No. 10 Tennessee to a victory over UTEP. The Volunteers (9-2) overcame a sluggish start to roll up the impressive win. Both teams were scoreless in the first quarter, but Tennessee found its rhythm. Grad student receiver Bru McCoy, who hadn’t caught a touchdown pass this season, had two. Peyton Lewis also ran for two scores. Tennessee’s defensive line, which had no sacks in last week’s loss to Georgia, had three against the Miners. UTEP (2-9) struggled with two missed field goals and three turnovers. Tennessee’s offense came alive with 28 points in the second quarter. In the final four drives of the quarter, Iamaleava completed 11 of 12 passes for 146 yards and touchdowns to Squirrel White, Ethan Davis and McCoy. No. 11 MIAMI 42, WAKE FOREST 14 MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. Ward completed 27 of 38 passes, plus ran for a score. He broke two more single-season Miami records, both of which had been held for 40 years by Bernie Kosar — most passing yards in a season and most completions in a season. Ward now has 3,774 yards on 268 completions this season. Kosar threw for 3,642 yards on 262 completions in 1984. Demond Claiborne had a 100-yard kickoff return for a touchdown for Wake Forest (4-7, 2-5). Claiborne also rushed for 62 yards for the Demon Deacons, and starting quarterback Hank Bachmeier was 8 of 14 passing for 86 yards and a touchdown. No. 13 SMU 33, VIRGINIA 7 CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. They would earn an automatic bid into the expanded by beating 11th-ranked Miami or 17th-ranked Clemson in the ACC title game on Dec. 7 in Charlotte, North Carolina. SMU had to get there first, and again, bouncing back from an interception and a fumble to complete 25 of 33 passes to six different receivers, including TD tosses to Jordan Hudson and Matthew Hibner. Brashard Smith provided a little balance on offense, running for 63 yards and his 13th touchdown of the season. SMU’s defense overwhelmed UVa’s offensive line, sacking Anthony Colandrea nine times and allowing the Cavaliers (5-6, 3-4) just 173 yards. (AP) — Luke Altmyer found Pat Bryant for a catch-and-run, 40-yard touchdown pass with 4 seconds left, sending No. 24 Illinois to a wild victory over Rutgers. Illinois (8-3, 5-3 Big Ten) was down 31-30 when it sent long kicker Ethan Moczulski out for a desperation 58-yard field goal with 14 seconds to go. Rutgers coach Greg Schiano then called for a timeout right before Moczulski’s attempt was wide left and about 15 yards short. After the missed field goal was waved off by the timeout, Illinois coach Bret Bielema sent his offense back on the field. Altmyer hit Bryant on an in cut on the left side at the 22, and he continued across the field and scored untouched in a game that featured three lead changes in the final 3:07. Rutgers (6-5, 3-5) gave up a safety on the final kickoff return, throwing a ball out of bounds in the end zone as players passed it around hoping for a miracle touchdown. Altmyer was 12-of-26 passing for 249 yards and two touchdowns. Bryant finished with seven receptions for 197 yards. The Associated PressSpl session at Rising Rajasthan Summit discusses sustainable mining methodsRAMPANT Arsenal handed Sporting Lisbon a Champions League humbling – and even taunted their star striker Viktor Gyokeres by nicking his celebration. The Gunners produced one of their best European away-day displays in recent memory with three goals inside 45 minutes out in Lisbon via Gabriel Martinelli, Kai Havertz and Gabriel. With Sporting on their knees, Brazilian defender Gabriel scored the third with a header on the brink of half-time before pulling out Gyokeres’ trademark ‘mask’ routine. The audacity. It is a sign of the confidence and the swagger running back through this Arsenal team, back at full-strength with injuries behind them, producing a performance that should make their rivals in this competition take note. Even when Sporting rallied with Goncalo Inacio’s 47th-minute header, Mikel Arteta’s men were ruthless in their response through Bukayo Saka’s 65th-minute penalty and Leandro Trossard's late addition . Gyokeres – a man who has been scouted by the North Londoners on numerous occasions – came into this contest as one of the continent’s most feared goal-getters - 24 in 17 so far this term for Sporting. Three of them came in a 4-1 battering of Manchester City under manager Ruben Amorim – now at Manchester United – at the Estadio Jose Alvalade earlier this month. But the 26-year-old comes away from this one with more questions than answers by his name. Up against centre-back duo William Saliba and Gabriel, it really was men against boys at times. Most read in Football FOOTBALL FREE BETS AND SIGN UP DEALS The Sporting fans showed off their impressive singing voices well into the opening minute of the match with their translated rendition of Frank Sinatra’s ‘My Way’. But those dulcet tones soon turned to jeers as Arsenal did things their way, piling on some early pressure and getting under the skins of the Sporting players. After a needless altercation that floored Havertz before a throw-in, Ousmane Diomande picked up a fourth-minute yellow card. And three minutes later, from another throw-in, the opener. It was a brilliantly intricate move, one that involved Martin Odegaard , Declan Rice, Thomas Partey and Jurrien Timber – the latter squaring it for Martinelli and the easiest of tap-ins. Arteta punched the air. The perfect start he craved from his team, one that had previously gone four European away days without finding the net. Sporting mounted a response, but big Swede Gyokeres was being marked superbly by the meat and two veg pairing of Saliba and Gabriel. He may be one of the most prolific marksmen on the continent right now, but in testing himself against a world-class defensive duo, Gyokeres was coming up severely short. Out-tought, out-muscled, dominated. He spent most of the first half skulking around like a stroppy youngster who had just had his ball nicked off him by the bigger boys. His mood worsened thanks to some more elegant Arsenal intricacy. Partey lofted a chipped pass over the Sporting back line for Saka to latch on to, poking through the legs of goalkeeper Franco Israel. Another empty-net finish, this time for Havertz, leaving Sporting stunned. A team who had won 17 of their opening 19 games in all competitions this term were being ripped to shreds. The Sporting fans then decided to use up the leftovers from Bonfire Night from the stands to give everyone within a five-mile radius the shock of a lifetime. It did little to wake up their beloved Sporting, however. A banner also emerged that read: "The Lion’s heart." This performance had very little of that. The visitors were the ones roaring. And the hosts had little to no answers for the onslaught Arsenal were consistently conjuring. Heading into the break, Arteta would have wanted another goal to show for their complete and utter control. He soon got it. Rice took his time in whipping in the corner, to the disgust of the whistling home end, but when he did, it was only ever destined for the head of Gabriel. When done right, that sort of routine is unstoppable, but Sporting’s marking was non-existent. Inside 45 minutes, Arsenal had doubled their Champions League campaign tally – while Gyokeres’ chances of adding to his five already in this competition looked bleak. After Gabriel cheekily used the Swedish international’s linked-finger celebration and the half-time whistle went, Gyokeres angrily launched the ball from his own half into an empty net. Less than two minutes into the second half, Sporting scored for real. David Raya was forced into his first meaningful save from a Hidemasa Morita strike, yet he was helpless to stop Inacio from flicking on from the resulting corner. Sporting fans cranked up the volume, only to watch Arsenal turn it back on with Diomande cutting down Odegaard in the box, getting Saka on the scoresheet from 12 yards. ( NASDAQ: AMD ) UBS Global Technology and AI Conference December 3, 2024 2:15 PM ET Company Participants Forrest Norrod - EVP and GM of the Data Center Group at AMD Conference Call Participants Timothy Arcuri - UBS Timothy Arcuri Good afternoon. I'm Tim Arcuri. I'm the Semiconductor Analyst here at UBS, and very pleased to have AMD with us, and very pleased to have Forrest Norrod, who is the EVP and GM of the Data Center Group at AMD. So, thank you, Forrest. Forrest Norrod Thanks. Good to be here. Timothy Arcuri So, Forrest, I wanted to start, you've got the broadest portfolio of data center silicon. You've got some new networking technology. You have CPU which feeds GPU. Maybe you can start by broadly talking about your strategy around your entire data center portfolio. Forrest Norrod Yes. We've been embarked over the last decade. I joined AMD almost exactly 10 years ago now. To build out a portfolio of data center technology to really take, eventually take leadership in providing silicon solutions for data center. So, we began, of course, with the CPU, that's where we had some heritage. We began with the epic line of the CPU, and that's done very well. We're about 34% share right now, and then we built out the GPU, and then we acquired a networking team and began building that out. And the purpose of having all of those pieces is that in the end, we do believe that that to really optimize the solutions, particularly in the AI era, that having all of the elements in-house is very helpful. And so, our intent is to build out reference solutions for AI systems that incorporate world class CPU, world class GPU, world class networking, and some of the parts is greater, the whole is greaterWashington, D.C., Dec. 03, 2024 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- New York, NY—December 3rd, 2024—On Monday, December 9, 2024, Vital Voices Global Partnership will host its annual Voices of Solidarity event in New York City, co-hosted by Diane von Furstenberg and Barry Diller. Explainer-Netanyahu corruption trial divides Israeli publicMy contact with Manmohan Singh goes back to the end of the 1960s when both of us were in New York. He was in the United Nations and I was teaching at New York University. Later on, we started working together in the mid-1980s when he was governor of the Reserve Bank of India and I was a deputy governor. If you look at his entire career, three important qualities stand out. One is vision, the other is courage and the third is humility. Ideas are needed to move the system forward, but you must have vision. Adequate vision must be supplemented by courage, which we saw in the early 1990s. The most important aspect of Dr Singh's actions is the exhibition of both ideas and implementation. The reforms introduced in the early 1990s, and the subsequent actions that he took in the period when he was PM, all indicate this combination of ideas and implementation. We worked together and there was an exchange of ideas. Even when we differed, we did so politely. He tried to take everybody along with him, and he gave the freedom to discuss freely. Finally, a conclusion was reached in which everybody agreed. There were occasions when we differed. But that did not come in the way of executing the ideas. There was also the quality of humility in him, which was extraordinary. For a person who held such important positions, he never rode roughshod over anybody. For example, in bringing to an end the system of issuing ad-hoc treasury bills, when I mentioned to him how this system acted a way that it resulted in the automatic monetisation of the fiscal deficit, he heard me out and then agreed, even though I did not expect he would agree to it that quickly. But he did, because when he saw the logic, he tried to follow it and implement whatever suggestion was made. Bringing the issue of these bills to an end could result in the cost of govt borrowing going up. But he was willing to bear it because the underlying principle was correct. Again, when we moved from the system of dual exchange rate to a system in which the market fully determined the exchange rate, there were many arguments against the move. There were suggestions that we move slowly. But when I discussed it with him, we decided that it was better to move in one step. He once again saw the benefit that comes from a particular action and immediately agreed to implement it. What he cared for is the benefit to the nation, benefit to society. If that demanded a particular action, he would take that action immediately. On The 1991 Devaluation: Originally, a decision was taken to devalue the rupee in two stages. I was in charge of announcing the exchange rate and made the first move. Before the second move could be made, there were some concerns whether we should devalue the rupee to such an extent. We had discussed the problem thoroughly and a conclusion had been reached and was also communicated to the President. But then the Prime Minister (PV Narasimha Rao) had some concerns on going ahead with the second step. Dr Singh said he would get in touch with me but then he went on saying that he was not able to reach me. By the time he reached me, I'd already "jumped the step". If he had backed down at that time, it would have reflected badly on India. Our ability to borrow in the market would have been hindered as it would have been seen as our unwillingness to take appropriate action. When the decision to devalue the rupee was taken, Dr Singh wrote a cheque and asked for it to be credited to the PM's Relief Fund. The amount represented difference in rupee value of his assets abroad following the devaluation. That showed how he was not willing to benefit by any decision personally. That shows the man's character, that his integrity was beyond question. He certainly managed the system both as the FM and the PM very well. History will remember him as one of the ablest PMs. Between 2005-06 and 2007-08, India had a growth rate in excess of 9%, which is outstanding. He will be remembered for ushering in efficiency in the system. That is what compelled him to move towards a competitive system. That is an important lesson for a country like India because if we really want to be able to compete in the world, let us say through exports, then efficiency becomes critically important. Without an efficient economic system, we cannot do it. As told to Surojit Gupta Stay updated with the latest news on Times of India . Manchester City’s crisis deepened as they surrendered a three-goal lead late in the game to draw 3-3 against Feyenoord in the Champions League. Pep Guardiola’s side avoided the indignity of a sixth successive defeat in all competitions and looked on course for a welcome victory thanks to a double from Erling Haaland – the first from the penalty spot – and a deflected effort from Ilkay Gundogan. Yet Guardiola was left with his head in hands as Feyenoord roared back in the last 15 minutes with goals from Anis Hadj Moussa, Sergio Gimenez and David Hancko, two of them after Josko Gvardiol errors.
