Alabama A&M football player Medrick Burnett has died from complications from a head injury after a head-on collision with another player suffered during an October 26 game. Burnett, 20, took a head-on blow during a game against Alabama State, sending him to the hospital. Now, a month after the game, he has died from his injuries, the Daily Mail reported. Not long after being admitted to the hospital, Burnett was listed in stable condition. However, he had “several brain bleeds and swelling of the brain,” said his sister, Dominece. “He had to have a tube to drain to relieve the pressure, and after 2 days of severe pressure, we had to opt for a craniotomy, which was the last resort to help try to save his life,” she added. The school has released a statement lamenting the loss of the redshirt freshman. “Today, our Bulldog family is heartbroken by the loss of Medrick Burnett Jr.,” Alabama A&M Athletics Director Dr. Paul A. Bryant said in a statement. “Medrick was more than an exceptional athlete; he was a remarkable young man whose positive energy, leadership, and compassion left an indelible mark on everyone who knew him.” “While words cannot adequately express our grief, we are humbled by the strength of his family, who stood by his side throughout this unimaginable ordeal,” the statement added. Burnett’s family has set up a GoFundMe page to help with his family’s medical and housing expenses. “Medrick Burnett Jr. will forever be remembered as a Bulldog. His spirit will remain an inspiration to all of us, reminding us of the importance of unity, resilience, and love,” the team said in a statement. Follow Warner Todd Huston on Facebook at: facebook.com/Warner.Todd.Huston , or Truth Social @WarnerToddHustonA state representative from Michigan is facing an online tirade after he suggested the United States should “make gay marriage illegal again” and asserted that his opinion isn’t controversial nor extreme – despite public polling showing the opposite. Joshua “Josh” Schriver, who represents the 66th district in the Michigan House of Representatives, is the self-proclaimed “most conservative state representative”. Having known to stir controversy online with his posts, he posted his poorly-received message on X Monday. “Make gay marriage illegal again. This is not remotely controversial, nor extreme,” Schriver wrote. Same-sex marriage has been legally protected in the United States since 2015 when the Supreme Court ruled in the case Obergefell v. Hodges . Before then, 19 states had laws protecting same-sex marriage. In general, most people support the legalization of same-sex marriage. One Gallup poll , conducted as recently as May, found that 69 percent of people believe same-sex marriage should be recognized by law with the same rights as heterosexual marriages. That poll found that approximately 46 percent of Republicans agree with that. By Tuesday afternoon, more than six million people had viewed Schriver’s post and multiple notable lawmakers responded by scolding his claim – including the Michigan Attorney General, who has been married to her wife since 2015. “Please explain how dissolving my marriage, or that of the hundreds of thousands of other same-sex couples living in America, provides a benefit to your constituents or anyone else. You’re not interested in helping Michiganders. You want only to hurt those you hate. Shame on you,” the state Attorney General, Dana Nessel, said. Fellow Michigan Representative Jason Morgan responded to Schiver saying it is “definitely both controversial and extreme”. He added that Donald Trump’s election “emboldens & empowers these extreme Republicans .” The Independent has asked Schriver for comment on the backlash but has not yet received a response. Online, Schriver doubled down on his claim, despite the evidence that people agree same-sex marriage should be legal. He posted a 16-year-old clip of former president Barack Obama saying marriage is “between a man and a woman” – something Obama later shifted his stance on. “20 years ago, Barack Obama was more conservative on marriage than many Republicans today,” Shriver wrote. “America only ’accepted’ gay marriage after it was thrusted into her by a perverted Supreme Court ruling”. In 2008, public support for same-sex marriage was around 40 percent, according to Gallup. But since then, the U.S. has become far more welcoming of same-sex marriage. For many young adults, same-sex marriage has been legal their entire adult life. The notion that same-sex marriage is at risk of losing federal protections has only been taken seriously recently. That was after Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas signaled he would support the move in a 2022 court opinion. Other than recommending the U.S. should outlaw gay marriage again, Schriver has also said that “White erasure is wrong” and declared it too “isn’t controversial.”

Well, it’s Tuesday. And during the NFL season , that means rosters are being adjusted across the league. For the Minnesota Vikings , that didn’t mean any moves for the 53-man roster. That’s good news for Stephon Gilmore, who is dealing with a hamstring injury suffered on Sunday vs the Arizona Cardinals. Minnesota Vikings cut veterans Myles Gaskin and Jake McQuaide Instead, all we saw from the Vikings this afternoon was movement on the practice squad. After the signing of Daniel Jones , and what appears to be the imminent activation of 37-year-old Pro Bowl long-snapper Andrew DePaola , Minnesota released veteran running back Myles Gaskin and waived replacement long snapper Jake McQuaide from the team’s practice squad. The #Vikings have waived LS Jake McQuaide and released RB Myles Gaskin from the practice squad. Myles Gaskin as active for five Minnesota Vikings games this season , but only saw the field for six total snaps on offense. In those very limited snaps, the 27-year old former 7th round pick got just three carries (-1 yard rushing). He also caught one pass for 11 yards. Most of Gaskin’s time on the field in purple came on special teams, where he totaled 85 snaps, mixed between both punt and field goal coverage/return. The longtime Miami Dolphin, who was drafted out of Washington in 2019 did not record a tackle, according to PFF , where he carried a 59.8 special teams grade. Andrew DePaola likely to be active vs Atlanta Falcons Jake McQuaide ‘waives’ goodbye, after four games with the Minnesota Vikings. The 12-year NFL veteran snappped the ball 33 times, and never stood out for causing a special teams mess. His 48.8 PFF grade, however, was his lowest since 2015. With McQuaide’s release, the assumption is that Andrew DePaola will be active on Sunday vs the Atlanta Falcons . Ten years ago, on Dec. 2, 2014, the hockey world lost one of its most cherished icons , Jean Beliveau . Known as “Gentleman Jean,” Beliveau’s name is synonymous with class, skill, and an unrivaled legacy in the sport. A Montreal Canadiens lifer, Beliveau spanned his career from 1950 to 1971, during which time he became one of the most accomplished players in NHL history. What Made Beliveau So Great? With a rare combination of size, grace, and toughness, Beliveau stood out even among the legends of his time. At 6’3” and 220 pounds, he was an imposing figure who could dominate games with his physicality and finesse. Over 1,125 regular-season games, he scored 507 goals and put up 1,219 points. In the playoffs, his dominance continued. He scored 79 goals and registered 176 points in 162 games. That level of play contributed to his incredible 10 Stanley Cup victories, including five consecutive championships from 1956 to 1960. Beliveau’s remarkable career concluded in the best possible fashion, with the Canadiens winning Game 7 of the 1971 Stanley Cup Final against the Chicago Blackhawks. He retired as a champion, cementing his place as one of hockey’s all-time greats. Beliveau’s Greatness Was About More than Hockey Skill But his legacy wasn’t just about numbers or trophies. Instead, it was about how he played and carried himself. Beliveau epitomized leadership and sportsmanship, which endeared him to fans and rivals alike. In a tongue-in-cheek manner, Gordie Howe , one of hockey’s fiercest competitors, once described the duality of Beliveau’s game in a 1960 Detroit Free Press article. Howe noted, “There’s nothing gentlemanly about him...he put his elbow into my eye for 16 stitches and then tripped me.” Howe also admired Beliveau’s craftiness, admitting that the Canadiens’ captain taught him how to use the butt end of his stick effectively, exemplifying the old-school hockey spirit of “give and take.” On the 20th Anniversary of His Death, Remembering a Habs Icon On this 20th anniversary, hockey fans from all corners unite in remembering a man who transcended team loyalties. He left an indelible mark on the sport. Beliveau wasn’t just a player—he was an ambassador for hockey – a symbol of what it means to lead with integrity and inspire those around you. As the Canadiens and the hockey community consider his contributions, it’s clear that Beliveau’s impact extends far beyond his era. His example continues to inspire, reminding us that this great game is about more than just winning. It’s about respect, camaraderie, and the joy of playing. Chess grandmaster Magnus Carlsen returns to a tournament after a dispute over jeans is resolved NEW YORK (AP) — Top ranked chess player Magnus Carlsen is headed back to the World Blitz Championship on Monday. That's after its governing body agreed to loosen a dress code that got him fined and denied a late-round game in another tournament for refusing to change out of jeans. The International Chess Federation president said in a statement Sunday that he’d let World Blitz Championship tournament officials consider allowing “appropriate jeans” with a jacket, as well as other "minor deviations” from the dress code. Carlsen quit the World Rapid and Blitz Chess Championships on Friday. He said Sunday he would play — and wear jeans — in the World Blitz Championship.
North Korean leader Kim Jong Un vowed to implement the “toughest” anti-U.S. policy, state media reported Sunday, less than a month before Donald Trump takes office as U.S. president. Trump’s return to the White House raises prospects for high-profile diplomacy with North Korea. During his first term, Trump met Kim three times for talks on the North’s nuclear program. Many experts however say a quick resumption of Kim-Trump summitry is unlikely as Trump would first focus on conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East. North Korea’s support for Russia’s war against Ukraine also poses a challenge to efforts to revive diplomacy, experts say. During a five-day plenary meeting of the ruling Workers’ Party that ended Friday, Kim called the U.S. “the most reactionary state that regards anti-communism as its invariable state policy.” Kim said that the U.S.-South Korea-Japan security partnership is expanding into “a nuclear military bloc for aggression.” “This reality clearly shows to which direction we should advance and what we should do and how,” Kim said, according to the official Korean Central News Agency. It said Kim’s speech “clarified the strategy for the toughest anti-U.S. counteraction to be launched aggressively” by North Korea for its long-term national interests and security. KCNA didn’t elaborate on the anti-U.S. strategy. But it said Kim set forth tasks to bolster military capability through defence technology advancements and stressed the need to improve the mental toughness of North Korean soldiers. The previous meetings between Trump and Kim had not only put an end to their exchanges of fiery rhetoric and threats of destruction, but they developed personal connections. Trump once famously said he and Kim “fell in love.” But their talks eventually collapsed in 2019, as they wrangled over U.S.-led sanctions on the North. North Korea has since sharply increased the pace of its weapons testing activities to build more reliable nuclear missiles targeting the U.S. and its allies. The U.S. and South Korea have responded by expanding their military bilateral drills and also trilateral ones involving Japan, drawing strong rebukes from the North, which views such U.S.-led exercises as invasion rehearsals. Further complicating efforts to convince North Korea to abandon its nuclear weapons in return for economic and political benefits is its deepening military co-operation with Russia. According to U.S., Ukrainian and South Korean assessments, North Korea has sent more than 10,000 troops and conventional weapons systems to support Moscow’s war against Ukraine. There are concerns that Russia could give North Korea advanced weapons technology in return, including help to build more powerful nuclear missiles. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said last week that 3,000 North Korean troops have been killed and wounded in the fighting in Russia’s Kursk region. It was the first significant estimate by Ukraine of North Korean casualties since the North Korean troop deployment to Russia began in October. Russia and China, locked in separate disputes with the U.S., have repeatedly blocked U.S.-led pushes to levy more U.N. sanctions on North Korea despite its repeated missile tests in defiance of U.N. Security Council resolutions. Last month, Kim said that his past negotiations with the United States only confirmed Washington’s “unchangeable” hostility toward his country and described his nuclear buildup as the only way to counter external threats.Pisces Daily Horoscope Today, Dec 30, 2024 predicts new responsibilities
