CBI arrests senior official of central PSU, 2 others in Rs 10 lakh bribery caseGophers football players are preparing to play Wisconsin for Paul Bunyan’s Axe on Friday, but three key pieces peered beyond the blinders to shore up their commitment to Minnesota on Monday. Quarterback Max Brosmer and offensive lineman Quinn Carroll — two sixth-year seniors — said they will play in the Gophers’ to-be-determined bowl game, bucking a growing trend of players skipping postseason games to prepare for shots in the NFL. ADVERTISEMENT Brosmer, a transfer from FCS-level New Hampshire, said he will “definitely” suit up. “It’s another opportunity for us to play as a team,” said Brosmer, who threw for 2,426 yards, 15 touchdowns and five interceptions in 11 games this season. “It’s a compilation of what you have worked on all season.” Carroll said he respects higher-level prospects who might opt out and protect their draft stock, but he wants to get back to a “standard” of players not skipping the games. “My goal ever since I came here was to be the leader, be the standard all the time, and I don’t want it to become a standard that we don’t play in the bowl game if we have NFL aspirations,” said Carroll, who has played three seasons at Minnesota after three years at Notre Dame. “Obviously it’s different for guys who are maybe touted a little bit higher or think it will be better off for them to start working on the next step, whether that is combine training or what have you. But that is one opportunity that I’m blessed with to play with the guys and I’m going to take full advantage of it.” Left tackle Aireontae Ersery is a prime candidate of a Gophers player who might want to safeguard a higher draft stock and limit injury exposure by sitting out the bowl game. The possible first- or second-round pick has not said what he might do. For example, former U center, John Michael Schmitz opted out of the Pinstripe Bowl in 2022; he was drafted in the second round by the New York Giants. Meanwhile, Gophers fifth-year defensive lineman Jalen Logan-Redding said he will return to Minnesota for 2025, instead of trying his luck in the NFL. “Coming back next year is definitely going to be the best for me and being able to maximize all my opportunities and exhaust eligibility,” Logan-Redding said. Logan-Redding said he talked with fellow D-lineman Deven Eastern, who has one more year remaining, about pairing up in 2025. ADVERTISEMENT “We talk a lot about it,” Logan-Redding said. “... We are excited for it, honestly. Not only continuing to build the D-line, but just continuing to build on the experience that we already have. We’ve seen the amount of destruction that we can create when we are focused. Me, Dev and, of course, (Anthony Smith). He would be pissed if I didn’t shout him out.” Smith, who has two more years of eligibility, has been one of the U’s best players in the last month. He has 23 total pressures and five sacks, including one sack in each of the last three weeks. ______________________________________________________ This story was written by one of our partner news agencies. India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI) has succeeded in increasing financial inclusion and promoting equitable economic growth by enabling underserved groups, including subprime and new-to-credit borrowers to access formal credit for the first time, according to a new study by IIM and ISB professors. The authors said that the success of UPI can be replicated in other countries as well and India can play a leading role in helping them adopt the fintech system. "Within a short span, UPI led to exponential penetration of digital payments across India and is used at all levels from street vendors to large shopping malls," said the paper prepared by IIM and ISB professors. Since its launch in 2016, the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) has transformed financial access in India, enabling 300 million individuals and 50 million merchants to perform seamless digital transactions, the study states. By October 2023, 75 per cent of all retail digital payments in India were through UPI. The rapid adoption of UPI was possible due to affordable internet across the country. "The affordability of digital technology played a critical role, enabling widespread UPI adoption in rural and urban areas alike," according to the study. According to the paper, a 10 per cent increase in UPI transactions led to a 7 per cent rise in credit availability, reflecting how digital financial histories enabled lenders to assess borrowers better. "Between 2015 and 2019, fintech loans to subprime borrowers grew to match those of banks, with fintechs thriving in high UPI-usage areas," according to the study. The authors said that fintech lenders scaled rapidly, increasing their loan volumes 77 times, far outpacing traditional banks in catering to smaller, underserved borrowers. The study also highlights that despite the credit surge, default rates did not rise, showing that UPI-enabled digital transaction data helped lenders expand responsibly. TRAVIS Kelce's time with the Kansas City Chiefs could be coming to an end soon, but the team doesn't have much to worry about. Yes, Kelce is one of the greatest tight ends of all time, but the Chiefs already have a plan to replace him. Kelce is having a down year in 2024, but the second tight end on the Chiefs depth chart is pulling his weight to replace that lost production. Noah Gray, a fourth-year tight end on the Chiefs, is setting career highs in every metric this year and proving he can be a valuable asset for the team in the future. While he has been a silent killer behind Kelce for the past few years, he has broken out in a big way over the last two weeks, announcing himself to the NFL . In the Chiefs' win over the Carolina Panthers on Sunday, Gray caught four passes for 66 yards and two touchdowns. Read more on the NFL In the previous week against the Buffalo Bills, Gray caught four passes again for 23 yards and two touchdowns. Those two weeks helped bring Gray's season totals up to 315 yards and four touchdowns, which is outpacing many of the weapons in the Chiefs offense. It is also outpacing Kelce, who has two touchdowns compared to Gray's four. Kelce has more yards than Gray with 569, but he also has 40 more receptions than he does. Most read in American Football Without Kelce in the Chiefs offense, it feels likely that Gray would step up and take those targets, perhaps being even more efficient than Kelce was with them. Gray is considered one of the most reliable players within the Chiefs offense, with offensive coordinator Matt Nagy calling him "Mr. Consistent." "He’s been somebody that, since I got here, I’ve really taken on to what he’s done as far as the details, his practice habits, his in-game adjustments, his making plays when given a chance," Nagy said. "He’s Mr. Consistent, [and] I think it’s very valuable, and he’s probably one of the more underrated and under-appreciated guys from outside of this building when you look at what he does." Even Patrick Mahomes has shared high praise for his tight end, saying the 25-year-old has learned from Kelce. "He does everything the right way," Mahomes said. "He’s learned a ton from Trav, and so he knows how to kind of work within the rules of the offense and get himself open. "He’s not going to talk a lot, he’s going to come to work, do his job, but at the same time, those are the guys you want on your team because you know that he’s going to do whatever it takes to win." Gray signed a contract extension before this season started, perhaps a signal that the Chiefs believe in him as Kelce's successor. He is under contract for an extra three years and $18 million, expiring after the 2027 season. Read More on The US Sun Kelce is only under contract through the end of next season. Based on his performances and his contract, it seems clear that Gray is the next Travis Kelce for the Chiefs, and it will be interesting to see how he performs as the top tight end in the offense in a few years.Dec. 9, 1985 Feb. 26, 1986 June 13, 1991 MANILA, Philippines — Times have changed since the founders of Philippine Daily Inquirer launched this broadsheet. Journalists had emerged from a turbulent period. Surviving censorship, control and manipulation imposed by the martial law regime of Ferdinand E. Marcos, the press stirred to action after the assassination of opposition leader Benigno Aquino Jr. in 1983. It did what newspapers are designed to do, provide a public forum where citizens can converse, debate and argue, exploring the ideas of nation-building for a free society. This forum empowered Filipinos to resist, mustering the collective will to speak truth to power. The fall of the dictatorship in 1986 enlivened the power of news. It was time for news organizations to regroup. Eugenia “Eggie” Apostol was among the first to test the media market in a new era. The period of democratic recovery heightened the resolve of journalists to provide Filipinos with news that was verified and checked for falsehood, to chase after the scoop and be the first to publish. Filipino journalists were hailed for the efforts of a “mosquito press” which exposed the bankruptcy of the Marcos regime and its empty promise to build a “New Society.” It was an auspicious beginning for a newspaper to establish and record the intelligence of the day. The leadership of Eggie Apostol signaled the publication’s readiness for the long haul, launching a paper that would project journalism as a tool for nation-building, holding the public captive with the power of information, forming the collective will to achieve the common good. The times seemed ideal for different kinds of journalism. Filipinos were engaged in rebuilding and renewal, buckling down to lay the foundations of democratic practice, preparing citizens for free and fair elections, drafting a new constitution, engaging in politics that presented fresh faces and fresh blood so the old politics could give way to the new. The media landscape could not have been more promising for the growth of a national press. The Inquirer was among the first to set up shop even as the new government had yet to settle and exercise its full authority. It made good use of the time and grew an enterprise that would last to the present. Indeed, the times called for new kinds of news organizations and new formats. The Inquirer’s success is due to the leadership’s familiarity with the tried and true. It set out to capture attention with headline news, leaving every other news enterprise to follow its trail. Eggie Apostol as publisher and Letty Jimenez Magsanoc as editor helmed the editorial team. Both had the feel for the public pulse, in touch with popular tastes and trends. Street-smart, they popularized news, even as the paper presented analysis and a cohort of leading columnists who set directions for media discourse. Times have changed since that golden passage. Both Apostol and Jimenez have left the field. A new generation of journalists has created a newspaper in a completely different setting. Legacy formats are now confronted with existential challenges as social media seized the momentum with the speed and pace of 24/7 news. Keeping the broadsheet alive seems quaint in these times; one cannot help but wonder whether either Eggie or Letty would have wanted to keep it going, given the revolutionary changes in communication and its impact on the way people receive and relate to the news. The question remains: what is the place of journalism in the ever-expanding landscape of communication? Where is the hierarchy of priorities, the preselection of the significant developments of the day. What to do amid the mindless mix of news, information, trivia and entertainment? The broadsheet and its noble tradition respond to these questions with courage and confidence. Those of us who believe in the indelibility of ink on paper welcome the resolve with which the broadsheet is published daily. But the challenges to the practice of journalism raise questions. The new generation of readers is a stranger to the format; the sequence of pages may make no sense to the newbie navigating its separate if fewer sections. The current audience picks up news according to a playlist in their heads. What sense of the intelligence of the day is imprinted in their minds has yet to be studied or understood. Perhaps, the print edition exists for precisely people like myself who want to test how the news that flows through the wilderness of podcasts and TikToks stand up to the structured order of the printed word, its carefully selected photographs and thoughtful illustrations, its careful crafting of an editorial position. I sense that this order, the framework that holds all news together, responds to a common need for interpretation and meaning. We understand the differences that set people and their communities apart, but their shared values manifest themselves despite these differences. The food we eat, our social manners may differ from place to place, but we are all essentially the same tribe wherever we are in the world. And news helps us to recognize this common humanity, despite the differences in culture, custom and religious beliefs. News must be daily. News must be read. It is a source of continuing education that prepares us to interpret the changes in which we live our lives, or to sustain the serenity of our outlook because our communities have lived and survived some of these changes before and we are somehow prepared to embrace the strangeness of their coming around again, this cycle of occurrence and happenstance. News may not last as literature does. But in the future, those attempting to understand their present are bound to turn to these first drafts of history to gain some understanding of what it all means. June 12, 1998 Dec. 7, 2000 Sept. 12, 2001 Exposure to news, especially good journalism, makes it possible for us to understand and accept the conduct of the outsider because it is all part of our shared humanity. Imperfect as these stories may be, events hyped with misplaced or misleading prominence—the news of the day serves to fuel the best minds to think on the possibilities these stories suggest. Indeed, the value of news is enhanced by the quality of society in which it operates. Unfortunately, the quality of news enterprise has a lot to do with the efforts to create or the utter failure to build the kind of learning society in which citizens engage in discussions and debates, so they can understand their differences as well as their agreements. The broadsheet is filled with possibilities. Let us will it a long and useful life. (AP) — Getting blown out at Green Bay following another squandered late lead the previous week against Seattle has quickly turned the San Francisco 49ers from a Super Bowl contender into a team just fighting to get back to the playoffs. If San Francisco doesn’t get healthy and eliminate the errors that led to to the Packers, the focus will turn from playoff permutations to what offseason changes are necessary. “I think everyone understands completely outside and inside what the situation is,” coach Kyle Shanahan said Monday. “That’s why the Seattle game was so tough of a loss and that’s why last night was even worse. We know what we got ahead of us. We know exactly what the playoff situation is. That is what it is. But really, all that matters is this week when you do need to go on a run and put a lot of wins to even think of that.” The task doesn’t get any easier as the Niners (5-6) get set to play at Buffalo on Sunday night. The 49ers are hoping to get , Nick Bosa and Trent Williams back for that game, but their presence alone won’t fix everything that . The defense got repeatedly gashed early and put San Francisco in a 17-0 hole before the offense even generated a first down. The running game never got going as Christian McCaffrey has looked nothing like the 2023 Offensive Player of the Year in his three games back from Achilles tendinitis. And whenever the Niners appeared to do something right, a penalty came back to haunt them. It added up to the most lopsided loss for San Francisco since the 2018 season, before Shanahan had turned the Niners into perennial contenders. “It’s probably one of the worst ones I’ve been a part of,” linebacker Fred Warner said. “It is embarrassing. You’ve got to take it on the chin, take it like a man and move on.” Despite the doom and gloom, the 49ers are only one game behind Seattle and Arizona in the NFC West standings with six games to go. But San Francisco already has three division losses and a difficult schedule featuring games against the Bills this week and Detroit in Week 17. “My optimism is not broken by any means,” tight end George Kittle said. “We still have a lot of very talented players. We will get some guys back and I still have full trust in the coaching staff to put our guys in position to make plays. I have no worry about that. But definitely an uphill grind. We’ll see what we’re made of, which I’m looking forward to.” What’s working Red-zone passes to Kittle. Backup QB Brandon Allen connected on a 3-yard TD pass to Kittle late in the second quarter for San Francisco’s only TD. Kittle leads the NFL with eight touchdown catches in the red zone, which is tied with Vernon Davis (2013) for the most in a season for a Niners player since 2000. Kittle was the only consistent part of the San Francisco offense with six catches for 82 yards. What needs help Avoiding penalties. San Francisco had nine penalties for 77 yards and they were costly and sloppy. The Niners had 12 men on the field on defense on back-to-back plays, three false starts, a pass interference in the end zone and three penalties on special teams, including a holding on Eric Saubert that negated an 87-yard kickoff return by Deebo Samuel to open the second half. Rookie Dominick Puni had three penalties after being penalized just once in the first 10 games. Stock up DE Leonard Floyd. There were few positive performances on defense, but Floyd had both of the team’s sacks. Stock down Run defense. San Francisco allowed 169 yards rushing, including 87 in the first quarter for the team’s second-worst performance in the opening quarter since 1991. The Niners missed 19 tackles, according to Pro Football Focus, as Josh Jacobs gained 83 of his 106 yards rushing after contact. Taylor Swift fans warned of fake ticket scams as Vancouver prepares for concerts VANCOUVER — The Better Business Bureau in British Columbia is warning Taylor Swift fans of scams ahead of the superstar's Vancouver concerts, highlighting one case in which a social media profile was allegedly hacked and used to sell fake tickets. Fans react during the opening of Taylor Swift's performance during the opening show of the Toronto dates for The Eras Tour, on Thursday, Nov.14, 2024. THE CANADIAN PRESS/Chris Young VANCOUVER — The Better Business Bureau in British Columbia is warning Taylor Swift fans of scams ahead of the superstar's Vancouver concerts, highlighting one case in which a social media profile was allegedly hacked and used to sell fake tickets. It says $2,000 was stolen from fans hoping to attend the shows, which will be at BC Place on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The warning comes after police in Toronto last month arrested a woman for allegedly selling about $70,000 worth of fake Swift tickets ahead of the concerts there. The Better Business Bureau said in a news release on Monday that the case in B.C. was reported on its Scam Tracker database. It said the complainant, who wasn't identified, reported that scammers took over her social media profile and used its messaging function to trick people into buying "non-existent concert tickets." The bureau said people needed to be vigilant when buying tickets online, especially for major events such as Swift's concerts that could be "a hot spot" for scammers. It advised fans to buy tickets from trusted vendors or reputable brokers while also double-checking with sellers about the tickets' authenticity even if they are a friend or an acquaintance. Using credit cards for the purchase may also grant consumers some protection, the bureau said. "If someone claims to be selling tickets to a sold-out concert just before the date or at an amazing price, think twice," it said. "Scammers love to prey on fans of any artist or sporting event by claiming to have impossible-to-get-tickets for them." Swift's three sold-out shows at Vancouver's B.C. Place end her record-breaking Eras Tour. As the city prepared for thousands of fans to descend, transit operator TransLink said Monday it would provide extra bus, SkyTrain, and SeaBus services on all three concert nights. It said the West Coast Express commuter train would also run on Saturday, leaving Mission, B.C. at 4 p.m. to head into the city and then returning from Vancouver's Waterfront Station at midnight. The statement said fans could expect a singalong on the SeaBus and live performances at Stadium–Chinatown SkyTrain Station near B.C. Place, with extra staff working to help manage crowds. President-elect Donald Trump has tapped Sebastian Gorka, a former Trump official and media commentator, to return to the White House and serve in a senior national security role in the new administration. Gorka's nomination to be deputy assistant to the president and senior director for counterterrorism has drawn controversy over past comments he made and his views on and . The role does not require Senate approval to be confirmed and was announced on Friday. The son of Hungarian parents who fled to the UK after the failed uprising against the Soviet Union in 1956, Gorka immigrated to the US and became a naturalised US citizen in 2012. His political and media career eventually led him to serve a brief stint in the first Trump administration. He has previously that 98 percent of "terrorists" in the United States are Muslim, and in a Breitbart column in 2016 demonised Muslim immigrants coming to the United States, saying that Muslims are, in the best case, opposed to American values and in the worst case, "want to kill us". Former US officials Steven Simon and Daniel Benjamin, who served in national security and counterterrorism roles in the US government, previously said that Gorka believes that violence in the Middle East is inextricably linked to the "martial language" of the Quran. "Mr Gorka sees Islam as the problem, rather than the uses to which Islam has been put by violent extremists," Simon and Benjamin said in an opinion article published in The New York Times in 2017, in which they referred to Gorka as an "Islamophobic Huckster". Middle East Eye contacted Gorka for comment on his views regarding Islam and Muslims but didn't receive a response by the time of publication. In recent months, Gorka has also been vocal on the Israeli war on Gaza, where Israeli forces have killed tens of thousands of Palestinians and destroyed much of the enclave's civilian infrastructure. In 2020, Trump appointed Gorka to a national security education board, a position he held for several months before resigning. In his resignation letter published in August 2020, Gorka said that certain "forces" did not support Trump's campaign promise to "Make America Great Again" and gave this as his reason for leaving the White House. However, reports at the time, citing US officials, said Gorka did not resign and that he was ousted from the administration. He currently is a political commentator who appears on Newsmax and the Salem Radio Network and is a close ally of Steve Bannon, a Trump advisor who previously described Islam as the "most radical" religion in the world. Bannon was one of the architects of Trump's immigration policy for several Muslim-majority countries, which became known as the "Muslim ban". Bannon, who was released from prison in October after four months of jail time, was convicted of not complying with subpoenas issued by the now-defunct House Select Committee that investigated the 6 January 2021 Capitol attack. Gorka has touted himself as a counterterrorism expert. But in 2017, his PhD advisor said that while Gorka was knowledgeable about some terrorism matters, "I would not call him an expert on terrorism". Trump's choice to select Gorka comes after his campaign spent time engaging with Muslim and Arab leaders in Michigan to shore up support from the community and capitalise on the outrage over the Biden administration's support for the Israeli war on Gaza. The Council on American-Islamic Relations, one of the leading Muslim organisations in the US, the appointment of Gorka back in 2020, referring to him as an "anti-Muslim bigot". While Trump has vowed to end the wars in the Middle East, he has also chosen several vehemently pro-Israel politicians to serve in key cabinet positions.No. 14 ASU, No. 17 Iowa State front-runners for possibly wild Big 12 finish

Back in league play, Hyun-ju Lee and Maurice Krattenmacher both scored in the 2.Bundesliga. See what else the loanees accomplished this week: FC Bayern Munich There are nine players on loan from the first team. Germany – Bundesliga There are five players on loan in the German Bundesliga: Alexander Nübel, Franz Krätzig, Paul Wanner, Armando Sieb, and Gabriel Vidović. Alexander Nübel – VfB Stuttgart Nübel started for Germany away to Hungary on Tuesday, and played the full 90 minutes. Thanks to a big win the match before, Germany had already secured the top spot in the group, but it was nice to see Nübel get his second cap in as many international windows. He recorded five saves and held the shutout for more than 90 minutes, but could not save Dominik Szoboszlai’s penalty in the ninth minute of stoppage time. This late goal caused Germany to split the points with a 1-1 final score. Back with Stuttgart, Nübel started again on Saturday at home against Bochum. He recorded two saves, which was enough to earn a shutout for his team. Stuttgart scored two second half goals for the 2-0 win. Stuttgart will travel to Serbia to face Red Star Belgrade on Wednesday in the Champions League . They will also travel to Bremen for a league match on Saturday. Franz Krätzig – VfB Stuttgart Krätzig was not in the matchday squads for Stuttgart’s first or second team this weekend. Hopefully he can get some more playing time soon. Paul Wanner – 1.FC Heidenheim Heidenheim was away to Leverkusen on Saturday and went up 2-0 within 21 minutes. Wanner came off the bench in the 28th minute due to an injury to Pieringer, who had already provided an assist. Wanner did not have a shot, nor a chance created for his teammates to shoot on the day. Leverkusen came back with a vengeance and had the match tied up just minutes after Wanner came on. Three second half goals from Leverkusen made it five unanswered and Leverkusen cruised to a 5-2 win. Wanner, Heidenheim struggle against Leverkusen Photo by Pau Barrena/Getty Images Heidenheim will host Chelsea on Thursday in the Conference League. They will also host Frankfurt in Bundesliga play on Sunday. Armando Sieb – 1. FSV Mainz 05 Mainz was away to Holstein Kiel on Sunday and was up 3-0 in the second half before Sieb entered in the 80th minute. He only had six touches, but completed all four passes he attempted. He was unable to put anything else into the match, but his team did not need it. The match ended in a 3-0 road win. Mainz will host Hoffenheim on Sunday. Gabriel Vidović – 1. FSV Mainz 05 Vidović was in Croatia for the return match of their Euro U-21 qualification against Georgia. He did not come into the match in regulation, but the aggregate score of 3-3 forced extra time, when Vidović came onto the pitch. He was unable to help Croatia find a goal in extra time, but scored the first goal in penalty kicks. Unfortunately, Croatia fell 7-6 after an epic shootout. Vidovic was not in the matchday squad for Mainz, but now shows on the injury report after his international stint. It states that he has an ankle injury and will be missing until late December. We wish him a quick recovery, but we may not see him until after the winter break. Spain – LaLiga Bryan Zaragoza is the only player on loan to Spain’s LaLiga. Bryan Zaragoza – CA Osasuna Zaragoza was on the bench for Spain in their final Nation’s league group match against Switzerland. He came into the match just moments after Spain retook the lead at 2-1 in the 69th minute. In the 85th minute, he received a yellow card for dissent after Switzerland was given a penalty — which they scored to equalize. Less than ten minutes later, Zaragoza was brought down inside the box to win a penalty. He stepped up an buried his shot from the spot to earn his first goal at the senior level for Spain and helped Spain win to finish off Nations League group play. Zaragoza (15) celebrates his game-winning goal with his teammates Photo by Gabriel Jimenez/Quality Sport Images/Getty Images Zaragoza returned to the starting lineup in Osasuna’s return to league play. He may have had a little hangover from national team duty, as he was unable to record a shot, nor did he create a chance for his team to shoot. He also completed just 53% of his passes, but his team was still up 2-0 in the first half thanks to a brace from Budimir. Zaragoza was subbed off in the 78th minute when they were up 2-1. A penalty in stoppage time for Villareal leveled the match at 2-2, and split the points. Osasuna will travel to face Sevilla on Monday, December 2. Austria – Bundesliga Lovro Zvonarek is the only player from the first team on loan to the Austrian Bundesliga. Lovro Zvonarek – Sturm Graz Zvonarek was with Croatia’s U21s in their return match against Georgia in the second of two matches for a final spot in the U21 Euros. Zvonarek started and played the full 120 minutes, which were not enough to settle the match. Unlike, Vidovic, his fellow Bayern loanee, he did not step up to take a penalty. Croatia fell 7-6 in the penalty shootout and in a heartbreak, misses out on next year’s U21 Euros. After going the full 120 minutes with Croatia, Zvonarek was not in the lineup for Sturm Graz. They won big 7-0 at home against SK Austria Klagenfurt. Graz will host Girona on Wednesday in the Champions League, before travelling to face Altach in league play on Saturday. Germany – 2. Bundesliga Maurice Krattenmacher is the only player from the first team on loan to the 2. Bundesliga Maurice Krattenmacher – SSV Ulm 1846 SSV Ulm was away to Hertha BSC on Saturday. Krattenmacher also received a yellow card deep into stoppage time for a bad foul. Ulm will host Greuther Fürth on Sunday. Germany – 3. Liga Gibson Nana Adu is the only player on loan from the first team in the 3. Liga. Gibson Nana Adu – Unterhaching Adu started for Unterhaching at home against Wehen Wiesbaden. No one was able to score in the second half and it ended with a 1-1 draw. Unterhaching will travel to face Energie Cottbus on Saturday. FC Bayern Munich II There are twelve players on loan from the second team. Germany – 2. Bundesliga Hyun-ju Lee is the only player from the second team loaned out to the 2. Bundesliga Hyun-ju Lee – Hannover 96 After earning his first cap for Korea, Lee returned to the starting lineup for Hannover 96 in a home game against Darmstadt. After an uneventful first half, Darmstadt scored in the 62nd minute. Just six minutes later, Lee scored his second goal of the season to equalize at 1-1 with a shot from near distance following a corner. Unfortunately, the match was only level for about four minutes before Darmstadt scored again. Lee left the match in the 77th minute, but Hannover was unable to find an equalizer and the match ended with a 2-1 loss. Marko Popovic – Türkgücü München Popovic was on the bench for Türkgücü but did not make it onto the pitch. They lost — again — 3-1 at home against TSV Aubstadt. Türkgücü will be on the road against SpVgg Hankofen-Hailing on Saturday. Luka Parkadze – Altglienicke Parkadze started for Altglienicke on the road against RW Erfurt. They started the match off with a goal in the fifth minute. Parkadze did not make it onto the scoresheet before being subbed off in the 59th minute with his team up 1-0. Robert Deziel Jr – Altglienicke Deziel also started for Altgienicke in the defense. After going up early, he helped keep the lead for 80 minutes before the home team equalized in the 85th minutes. Altglienicke was unable to find another goal, but Deziel and company kept Erfurt from scoring again too. The match ended in a 1-1 draw. Altglienicke will host Lukenwalde on Friday. Yousef Qashi – Wupertaler SV Qashi was on the bench for Wupertaler against Sportfreunde Lotte. He came into the match late in stoppage time to help his team see out a 1-0 win. Benedikt Wimmer – Wupertaler SV Wimmer started in defense for Wupertaler SV on the road. The match was scoreless through the first half. Wupertaler SV will host SV Gütersloh on Saturday. Austria – Bundesliga Matteo Pérez Vinlöf is the only player on loan to the Austrian Bundesliga from the second team. Matteo Pérez Vinlöf – Austria Wien Vinlöf started for Austria Wien and played 67 minutes against Hartberg. Ten minutes later Wien found a goal and won the match 1-0. Austria Wien will travel to Linz to face LASK on Sunday. Austria – 2. Liga Tom Hülsmann is the only player on loan to the Austrian 2. Liga from the second team Tom Hülsmann – SKN St. Pölten Hülsmann started in goal for St. Pölten against Rapid Wien II. He saved all six shots on goal that he faced and kept the shutout. His team scored a goal in the second half to go up a goal, but then went down a man with about 20 minutes to go. Hülsmann also received a yellow card in the 82nd minute, presumably for timewasting. All in all, they were up to the task and finished off the 1-0 road win. St. Pölten will host SV Laffnitz on Friday. Netherlands – Kampioen Divisie David Jonathans is the only player on loan to the Dutch Kampioen Divisie. David Jonathans – FC Den Bosch Jonathans was on the bench for Den Bosch’s 3-0 home loss to league leader’s Excelsior, but did not make it onto the pitch. Den Bosch will travel to face Cambuur on Tuesday, before hosting FC Dordrecht on Sunday — both in league play. Portugal – Liga Potugal Taichi Fukui is the only player on loan in Liga Portugal. Taichi Fukui – FC Arouca Fukui started for Arouca in the fourth round of the Taca de Portugal — Portugal’s cup competition — against top-flight opponent Farense. He played the first half, but did not get on the scoresheet. His team was down 2-1 at halftime, but Arouca was unable to score in the second half and they crash out of the cup competition. Arouca will host Benfica in league play on Sunday. FC Bayern Frauen There are five players on loan from FC Bayern’s Frauen team. Germany — Frauen-Bundesliga Karólína Lea Vilhjálmsdóttir is the only player on loan in the Frauen-Bundesliga. Karólína Lea Vilhjálmsdóttir – Bayer 04 Leverkusen Vilhjálmsdóttir started for Leverkusen at home against Turbine Potsdam in the DFB-Pokal Frauen. She played for 67 minutes but did not score, nor help her team score before being subbed off. Leverkusen will host league leader’s Wolfsburg after the international break. England – Women’s Super League Jill Baijings is the only player on loan to the Women’s Super League. STATE COLLEGE — Early in the season, Penn State routinely started slowly on offense, a trend that has reared itself again over the last two weeks. Penn State fell behind 10-0 last week before rallying at Minnesota. On a frigid final day of November, the Nittany Lions were down 7-0 to Maryland after two plays. Nicholas Singleton fumbled on Penn State’s first play and Maryland struck on its first snap with quarterback MJ Morris hitting Kaden Prather for a 25-yard TD 14 seconds into the game. Penn State stumbled through most of the first quarter, gaining just 11 yards on its first four drives and managing just a 49-yard field goal from Ryan Barker following a big kick return. The defense settled in first. Penn State had three sacks in five snaps, including a corner blitz from sophomore Zion Tracy to jumpstart the squad who learned just before kickoff it could reach the Big Ten title game with a win. On its fifth drive, the offense got going. The Nittany Lions bridged the first and second quarters with a 13-play drive, covering 60 yards. Singleton’s 2-yard rushing TD on the fifth play of the second quarter jumpstarted a 28-point second quarter. The Nittany Lions ripped off the final 44 points of the game. Trailing 10-7, Maryland coach Mike Locksley got a little too aggressive and it opened the floodgates three minutes into the second quarter. One drive after Penn State took the lead, the Terrapins went for it on fourth-and-one from their own 29. On fourth down, the Lions’ Abdul Carter and Tyrece Mills knifed through and stoned Roman Hemby for no gain. Penn State quickly responded, needing just three plays to extend the lead to 10 points. Drew Allar hit Khalil Dinkins for 23 yards. He plowed in from the one two plays later to make it 17-7 to jumpstart the Penn Stater runaway. Carter, a finalist for the Bednarik and Lombardi Awards had two more sacks on Saturday, giving the All-American candidate 10 on the year. He is the first Penn State since Carl Nassib (15.5) in 2015 to reach double-digits in sacks. Nassib’s total is the single-season Penn State record. Carter now has 21 career sacks in three years, which moves into the top 10 in program history. He is now tied with Todd Aikins (1992-95) for seventh in Penn State history. Courtney Brown, who was the No. 1 pick in the 2000 NFL Draft is Penn State’s career-record holder with 33 sacks. Penn State did not allow a point in the third quarter on Saturday afternoon and finished the regular season without allowing a touchdown in the third quarter. Over a dozen games, Penn State allowed 15 third-quarter points, on field goals by Southern Cal, Wisconsin, Ohio State, Washington and Minnesota.Welcome to an Amazon Prime Monday Night Hockey edition of NHL Predictions here at Last Word on Hockey as the Calgary Flames are in town to take on the Ottawa Senators. Tonight’s game is a tale of two teams headed in opposite directions. Calgary is winners of four straight, while Ottawa is losers of five in a row. Will these trends continue or will Ottawa be able to flip the switch at home? So, as we get into it, we will send out the reminder. Be sure to check out all our coverage as we look at key matchups and provide detailed analysis on all the games throughout the 2024-25 campaign. NHL Predictions Calgary Flames at Ottawa Senators, from Canadian Tire Centre Time: 7:30 p.m. Eastern Standard Time (EST) TV: Amazon Prime Monday Night Hockey The Ottawa Senators Searching for some Positives Some line tinkering by head coach Travis Green wasn’t enough to get it done Saturday versus the Vancouver Canucks . The Sens came back but in the end, it was too little, too late. It will be interesting to see what tricks coach Green has up his sleeve for the Flames. The @NHLFlames take a four-game winning streak into Ottawa, where @Senators forward Tim Stützle owns an eight-game home point streak of his own. It's Monday, and it's only on Prime! 7:30 p.m. ET | Prime Video Canada ( @SportsOnPrimeCA ) pic.twitter.com/ltd1uDnztx — NHL Public Relations (@PR_NHL) November 25, 2024 Regardless of the line changes, one player who continues to hum along is young star Tim Stutzle . Through 20 games, Stutzle leads the team in assists (15) and points (24). Along with Drake Batherson and Brady Tkachuk , the trio are all a point-per-game or better and power the Sens offence. However, the team is in disarray, evidenced with the roster changes. Artem Zub has a fractured foot, so the Sens management have made it known they’re in pursuit of a defenceman. Furthermore, Zack MacEwen cleared waivers and fellow Zack, as in Zack Ostapchuk has been recalled from Belleville. Cole Reinhardt was also called up so the exact lineup is a bit unclear. One thing confirmed is that Anton Forsberg gets the call between the pipes. Sens are trying to spice things up, hopefully they end up with two points in the end tonight. Vancouver Looks to Stay Above the Curve It’s hard to imagine the Flames are where they are right now. They traded Noah Hanifin , Elias Lindholm , Nikita Zadorov , Jacob Markstrom , and went from cap ceiling to basement dwellers over the past year or so. And somehow, someway, they might have actually gotten better. Yes, on paper they aren’t very strong. However, if you check the NHL’s Pacific Division standings you’ll find their 12-6-3 record has them in second place. Their offence is not fancy, with a pair of defencemen, one-two in team scoring. Rasmus Andersson (13) and MacKenzie Weegar (12) take the honours for that distinction. It is also interesting to note, that although they are not scoring a lot, they are consistent and durable. Each of the club’s top-seven scorers have played in all 21 games. The Alberta work ethic appears to be strong in Cow Town. Along with the team, one of their players is taking the NHL by storm. Rookie goaltender Dustin Wolf is a big part of his club’s success. Expect him to put his wonderful record on the line tonight. He’s currently 8-2-1 with a 2.33 goals-against average and a .926 save percentage. NHL Predictions: Canucks and Senators Based on our analysis, Ottawa powered by their captain right the ship for one game and emerge victorious. Prediction: Ottawa wins in regulation, 5-1. According to Fanduel, if we want to look at adding some friendly wagers on the outcomes, check these out. Take Ottawa to cover the spread at -1.5 paying +154, also, having either Tkachuk or Batherson score pays +110. Stutzle to record a point is -215. Those seem like good value picks assuming an Ottawa victory. Please play responsibly, check for your local rules and age restrictions, some jurisdictions require ages 21+. Gambling problem? NEWARK — After a recount, the results of a Newark City Council race have held, with Jactina Arteaga headed toward victory with a four vote advantage. By Friday afternoon, Arteaga had a 0.1% lead, with 6,446 votes to Julie Del Catancio’s 6,442 votes. The Alameda County Registrar of Voters manually recounted all of the race’s ballots by Friday afternoon and the results appeared to hold the same, an official said Friday. Tim DuPuis, the Alameda County registrar, said Friday that he personally made the decision to review the race’s results because it was within 10 votes of separation – the closest race in the county. The results of the recount appeared to hold, Dupuis said Friday. The only other tight race in the county, he added, was the Fremont District 6 council race where Raymond Liu had a 36-vote lead over incumbent Teresa Cox. At one point, the contest had been as close as 12 votes before more ballots were counted.Dupuis said he did not elect to recount that race. Arteaga received a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Cal State University, Hayward. She has previous experience as a child support officer for San Mateo County, in finance and public safety administration in San Mateo County District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe’s office and as an assistant agency director with the Social Services Agency. “Although it has been a roller coaster with the results these past few weeks, it is important that every vote gets counted. I’m glad the ROV is doing a manual count and I hope that I remain in the lead,” Arteaga said in a statement Friday before the recount was completed. “Either way the voters have spoken and we will have new leadership on the council beginning in December.” The latest campaign finance records show Arteaga raised $14,902 through October, mostly through small donations, including a $2,500 personal loan. She spent $5,820, largely on print ads and other campaign advertising materials. “It seems like what people really want to see is that they’re safe, that their families are safe, and that we’re responsible,” Del Catancio said in an interview Friday. “I feel like I’d fit in wholeheartedly because I really love Newark, I’m a long term resident here and I also work in the area.” Del Catancio received a law degree from the University of San Francisco School of Law and a master’s degree in administration from the University of Kansas. She is currently a Newark planning commissioner and educator in the Newark Unified School District. “Win or lose, I feel like we put our heart and soul into it and we tried the best that we could. And so I think that it’s really up to the people,” Del Catancio added. “The fact is that in any race, you set out, you try your hardest, you meet the people and they make a decision. We’ll see how it goes, fingers crossed.” The registrar’s office expects to certify the Nov. 5 election results in December. The San Francisco 49ers (5-7) take a three-game losing streak into their home matchup December 8, 2024 with a struggling Chicago Bears squad (4-8), winners of six straight. Canadian Prime Minister Trudeau flies to Florida to meet with Trump after tariffs threat WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (AP) — Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has flown to Florida to have dinner with President-elect Donald Trump at his Mar-a-Lago club after Trump threatened to impose sweeping tariffs on Canadian products. Joining Trump and Trudeau at dinner were Trump's picks for commerce secretary, interior secretary and national security adviser, and the three men's wives. From the Canadian side, the dinner guests included Public Safety Minister Dominic LeBlanc, whose responsibilities include border security. Trump’s transition did not respond to questions about what they had discussed or whether the conversation alleviated Trump’s concerns about the border. A smiling Trudeau declined comment upon returning to his West Palm Beach hotel late Friday. Emboldened 'manosphere' accelerates threats and demeaning language toward women after US election CHICAGO (AP) — An emboldened fringe of right-wing “manosphere” influencers has seized on Donald Trump’s presidential win to justify and amplify misogynistic derision and threats online. Many have appropriated a 1960s abortion rights rallying cry, declaring “Your body, my choice,” and have been using it publicly on college campuses and even in public schools. While none of the current online rhetoric is being amplified by Trump, experts say many young men see the former president’s return to the White House as vindication of their views on women. For many women, the words represent a worrying harbinger of what might lie ahead as some men perceive the election results as a rebuke of reproductive rights and women’s rights. Syrian insurgents are inside Aleppo in a major setback for Assad as government forces regroup BEIRUT (AP) — Thousands of Syrian insurgents have fanned out inside Syria's largest city Aleppo a day after storming it with little resistance from government troops. Syria's army said troops have redeployed to prepare for a counteroffensive. Witnesses said insurgents were seen Saturday at landmarks in Aleppo for the first time since 2016, when they were expelled by government forces backed by Russia and Iran. The surprise offensive is a major embarrassment for Syrian President Bashar Assad, who has regained total control of the city eight years ago. Israeli strike in Gaza allegedly kills workers with World Central Kitchen charity DEIR AL-BALAH, Gaza Strip (AP) — An Israeli airstrike on a car in Gaza has killed five people, according to a senior Palestinian health official. An aid worker says three of the people killed were employees of the charity World Central Kitchen. The charity's aid delivery efforts in Gaza were temporarily suspended earlier this year after an Israeli strike killed seven of its workers. Israel's military says it struck a wanted militant who had been involved in the Hamas attack that sparked the war. In a later statement, it said that the alleged attacker had worked with WCK and it asked “senior officials from the international community and the WCK administration to clarify” how that had come about. Fishers at a Lebanese port hope ceasefire with Israel means normal life is returning TYRE, Lebanon (AP) — The ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah brought hope for normality back to many in southern Lebanon on Friday. That includes fishers who’ve long launched their single-engine wooden boats into the Mediterranean at dawn. During the last two months, Israel imposed a siege that kept hundreds of fishers at this ancient Phoenician port on shore. That upended their lives in a major hit for the industry. The port siege also cut people off from the key ingredients for traditional Lebanese dishes. As war devastated their country, the loss of fish damaged a deep association with home. The possibility of renewed fishing is helping fuel hope. How Brazilian police say Bolsonaro plotted a coup to stay in office SAO PAULO (AP) — Brazil’s Federal Police have formally accused former far-right President Jair Bolsonaro and 36 others of plotting a coup to keep him in office. The plot was allegedly comprised of several components and substantiated by evidence and testimony in the agency's 884-page report. The pieces of the puzzle include laying the groundwork by systematically sowing distrust of the electoral system among the populace. It also includes drafting a decree to give the plot a veneer of legal basis and pressuring top military brass to go along with the plan. Bolsonaro and his main allies have denied any wrongdoing or involvement and accuse authorities of political persecution. More than 100 arrested as Georgian police clash with protesters over suspension of EU talks TBILISI, Georgia (AP) — More than 100 demonstrators were arrested overnight in Georgia as protesters clashed with police following the government’s decision to suspend negotiations to join the European Union, the country’s Interior Ministry said. Friday marked the second straight night of protests after Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze of the country’s ruling Georgian Dream party announced the suspension the previous day. The Associated Press saw protesters in Tbilisi being chased and beaten by police as demonstrators rallied in front of the country's parliament building. The violence follows Georgian Dream’s disputed victory in the Oct. 26 election, which was widely seen as a referendum on the country’s aspirations to join the European Union. Romania's parliamentary vote risks being overshadowed by presidential race chaos BUCHAREST, Romania (AP) — Romanians are preparing to go to the polls in a parliamentary vote that will determine a new government and prime minister to lead the European Union and NATO member country. However, Sunday's vote is sandwiched between a two-round presidential race and is overshadowed by controversies and chaos following the outcome of the first vote. While the president has significant decision-making powers in areas such as national security and foreign policy, the prime minister is the head of the nation’s government. Sunday’s vote will determine the formation of the country’s 466-seat legislature. North Korea's Kim vows steadfast support for Russia’s war in Ukraine SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — North Korean leader Kim Jong Un said his country will “invariably support” Russia’s war in Ukraine as he met Russia's visiting defense chief. A Russia military delegation led by Defense Minister Andrei Belousov arrived in North Korea on Friday as international concerns about the two countries’ expanding cooperation deepened after North Korea sent thousands of troops to Russia. During a Friday meeting, Kim and Belousov reached “a satisfactory consensus” on issues on how to further boost strategic partnership and defend each country’s sovereignty and security interests, state media said. Great Lakes, Plains and Midwest forecast to be hit with snow and dangerous cold into next week BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) — The first big snow of the season has the potential to bury towns in New York along lakes Erie and Ontario during a hectic holiday travel and shopping weekend. Forecasters says winter storm conditions could persist into next week and cause hazards in the Great Lakes, Plains and Midwest regions. Forecasters predict 4 to 6 feet of blowing and drifting snow could fall in Watertown and other areas east of Lake Ontario through Monday. New York Gov. Kathy Hochul has declared a disaster emergency in affected areas.Blowout loss to Packers leaves the 49ers on the playoff brink
