Geoff Molson: Even with bad results, the Habs will stick to their plan

PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — Republican Austin Theriault on Wednesday ended a recount in his congressional race in Maine and conceded to Democratic U.S. Rep. Jared Golden, bringing to an end the closely watched contest a month after Election Day. Theriault decided to end the recount before its completion after early results did not show a significant change in the outcome after Golden won by 2,706 votes using the state’s ranked choice voting. “I ran this campaign centered around putting people over politics, and it’s time to do that now,” Theriault announced, calling the contest “an extremely close and hard-fought race.” Between ranked voting and the recount, the election was a drawn-out process. Golden won the most first-choice votes but fell shy of a majority with less than 49% of the votes cast because about 12,000 ballots were either blank or had write-in candidates. That necessitated another voting round in which ballots were brought to Augusta, entered into a computer and reallocated with the second choices from ballots that were blank or had write-in candidates. The Associated Press declared the 2nd Congressional District winner upon conclusion of the process more than a week after Election Day. The recount began Monday. This race drew attention and more than $50 million in spending as both parties fought to control the House of Representatives . Golden, a Marine Corps veteran who demonstrated a willingness to defy his own party, campaigned on his ability to work with both Democrats and Republicans. He also touted his advocacy for the lobster industry, which is crucial to the economy in the region. But Golden was attacked for his opposition to assault weapons , which he announced after an Army reservist used an assault rifle to kill 18 people and injure 13 others in Lewiston in October 2023 . Theriault, a former NASCAR driver, had the backing of President-elect Donald Trump, but he also portrayed himself as a potential uniter during a time of division. “We need more balance and less extremism in Washington,” Theriault said previously. It was the third time Golden won through an additional voting round under ranked voting. The system allows voters to rank candidates on the ballot and allows for additional voting rounds to ensure a majority winner. Ranked choice tabulations allowed Golden to unseat Republican incumbent Rep. Bruce Poliquin in 2018, and to win a rematch in 2022. This story has been corrected to show Jared Golden received the most first-place votes.

Major poll puts Ireland’s lead parties near neck-and-neck

It didn't take Syracuse first-year coach Fran Brown long to figure out the key matchup for Saturday afternoon's Atlantic Coast Conference game visiting Miami. "Syracuse has a really good quarterback," Brown said of Kyle McCord, "and Miami has a really good quarterback (Cam Ward)." With a win on Saturday, the No. 6 Hurricanes (10-1, 6-1 ACC) can clinch a berth in the league championship game against SMU. Miami is a 10 1/2-point favorite for Saturday's game. Syracuse (8-3, 4-3) has reached eight wins for just the fourth time since 2002, going 8-5 in 2010 and 2012 and 10-3 in 2018. However, the Orange haven't defeated a Top-10 team since knocking off Clemson in 2017. Miami leads the nation in scoring (44.7), and the Hurricanes will count on perfect passing conditions in Syracuse's dome. That could be huge for Ward, who leads the nation with 34 touchdown passes, ranking second in passing yards (3,774) and fourth in passing efficiency. Ward's top target is wide receiver Xavier Restrepo, who needs just 21 yards to reach 1,000 for the second straight season. Restrepo also ranks tied for seventh in the nation with 10 TD receptions. Ward has some other top targets, including 6-foot-4, 245-pound tight end Elijah Arroyo, who is a walking mismatch because of his size and speed. He leads Miami with 18.5 yards per reception. Hurricanes wide receivers Isaiah Horton and Jacolby George have combined for 12 TD passes, and Sam Brown has added two more. Each of them has more than 500 receiving yards this season. Miami's running game features battering ram Damien Martinez (739 yards, 5.5 average, eight TDs); versatile Mark Fletcher Jr. (499 yards, 5.7 average, six TDs); and game-breaking freshman Jordan Lyle (361 yards, 8.6 average, four TDs). Defensively, Miami's big-play man is safety Mishael Powell, who ranks second in the ACC with five interceptions. "He's all about winning," Miami coach Mario Cristobal said of Powell. "He's a smart, self-starting team player." On special teams, Miami kicker Andres Borregales ranks second in the ACC with 97 points. He is 52-for-52 on extra points and 15-for-16 on field goals. Meanwhile, McCord ranks No. 1 in the nation in passing yards (3,946) and tied for seventh in TD passes (26). McCord, a transfer from Ohio State, has also set Syracuse's single-season record for passing yards. In last week's 31-24 win over Connecticut, McCord passed for a career-high 470 yards. However, McCord is just 46th in the nation in passing efficiency, due in part to his high total of interceptions (12). Syracuse also has three of the top six pass-catchers in the ACC in terms of yards: tight end Oronde Gadsden II (810) and wide receivers Jackson Meeks (801) and Trebor Pena (743). Gadsden, who is from the greater Miami area, has had three straight 100-yard games. He is the son of former Miami Dolphins wide receiver Oronde Gadsden. Syracuse's run game is led by LeQuint Allen, who has rushed for 819 yards, a 4.3 average and 12 TDs. The issue for Syracuse could be its defense, which ranks 13th in the ACC in points allowed (27.8). Miami's defense is fourth (22.3). Even so, Syracuse coach Brown said he's excited about this matchup. "I heard Miami is going to come deep," Brown said of Miami fans. "It's going to be intense in the stands. It's going to be intense on the field. I think this is a game everyone wants to see." --Field Level MediaA lawmaker has urged Vice President Sara Duterte to heed the advice of her father, former President Rodrigo Duterte, to exit politics as soon as possible. “We strongly urge the Vice President to listen to her father’s counsel to step away from politics before it’s too late,” House Minority Leader Marcelino “Nonoy” Libanan said on Sunday. He then described the younger Duterte as lacking “both the gumption and the grace required of a national leader.” “She is clearly unlike her father. It would appear that she makes crucial judgments and issues utterly reckless pronouncements without any preparation or thoughtful consideration,” he said. Meanwhile, Senator Ronald dela Rosa came to the defense of the Vice President amid the backlash over her outburst against President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and his family. He explained that Duterte was only “human” and had been pushed to a breaking point due to political persecution. “If you were in her situation, could you stomach the persecution against her? Is it unbecoming if her reaction was merely natural, as a human being who is angry and hurt?” Dela Rosa said. He added that the Vice President was simply showing her human side during her recent publicized meltdown. “It is up to the people how they perceive a person’s anger. But I guarantee you, Inday Sara is a genuine person, not plastic, who has emotions also,” he further stressed. On the other hand, Dela Rosa questioned the move by the House of Representatives to transfer Duterte’s chief of staff, Zuleika Lopez, from the chamber’s detention facility to the Women’s Correctional Facility. “But what I commented on is that it’s not right for a person who was only cited in contempt during a hearing in the House of Representatives to be immediately sent to the Women’s Correctional Facility, which is a place for convicted criminals serving sentences. This person has not yet been convicted,” Dela Rosa said. The senator is studying what actions he can take regarding the Vice President’s situation, but noted: “We observe inter-parliamentary courtesy.” Lopez has been held at the House detention facility since Wednesday night after the House Committee on Good Government and Public Accountability cited her for contempt due to her allegedly evasive responses during the panel’s legislative inquiry into the alleged misuse of confidential funds by agencies under VP Duterte on 20 November. Lopez was taken to the hospital early Saturday morning after reports of vomiting and collapsing, following the House panel’s order for her transfer. She was initially brought to St. Luke’s Medical Center in Makati City, but the House of Representatives ordered the police to transport her to the Veterans Memorial Medical Center (VMMC). Duterte, in a chance interview on Sunday, lamented Lopez’s desire to resign from her post due to being “deeply traumatized” in the detention facility at the House of Representatives. “She told me: ‘I want to resign. I want to resign from the Office of the Vice President,’ and I told her, ‘Okay.’ She told me, ‘I want to go home to my mother.’ She will just finish the hearings,” Duterte told reporters. In a media briefing on Sunday, ACT Teachers Partylist Rep. France Castro, who moved the motion to cite Lopez in contempt, said the House will still invite OVP officials to their hearings even if Lopez resigns. “Even if she resigns, she still has to appear before the committee. It’s her personal decision to resign. Even if she resigns, Congress can still summon her,” Castro said. Castro added that the House contempt order against Lopez is valid only until Monday, 25 November. “Attorney Lopez’s contempt will only last until tomorrow. If the committee members don’t ask any more questions, she can go home,” she said. According to Duterte, Lopez has not calmed down yet. She said Lopez insisted her lawyers remain outside her hospital room 24 hours a day and has also requested a daily meeting with them. “She woke up several times in the night and had three dreams of someone smothering her with a pillow. No appetite, she ate fruit so she could take her medicine,” she said. Duterte shared that Lopez has “allowed” her to leave VMMC, while Senators Dela Rosa and Christopher “Bong” Go will stay “for the meantime” while she’s not around. “She allowed me to go see my children so long as Senator “Bong” Go will replace me and that I come back in the evening,” she said. Hours after the Vice President left to visit her children, Senator Imee Marcos, the President’s eldest sister, arrived via helicopter at the VMMC where Lopez is being confined.

MADRID (AP) — Kylian Mbappé missed a penalty kick again and Federico Valverde gifted a late goal as Real Madrid lost ground to Barcelona in the Spanish league after a 2-1 loss at Athletic Bilbao on Wednesday. Mbappé had his penalty saved by Athletic goalkeeper Julen Agirrezabala in the 68th minute, and Valverde lost possession on defense to allow an easy winner by Gorka Guruzeta in the 80th. “We knew that he is a good penalty taker,” Agirrezabala said of Mbappé. “He missed the last one and I believed that he was going to choose the same side and luckily that’s what happened.” Valverde had control of the ball but gave it away while trying to get past a few Athletic players instead of passing it to a teammate, leaving Guruzeta with an easy run into the area for his goal. Álex Berenguer had put the hosts ahead in the 53td and Jude Bellingham equalized for Madrid in the 78th. Mbappé had also missed a penalty in Madrid's 2-0 loss at Liverpool in the Champions League last week. He didn't take the one for the club in a Spanish league match on Sunday, but he scored in the 2-0 win over Getafe to ease some of the pressure on him and the club. But it was another lackluster outing for Mbappé, who continues to struggle in his first season since finally joining the Spanish powerhouse. “I won’t evaluate the performance of a player because of a missed penalty. Obviously he is sad and disappointed, but you have to move on,” Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti said about Mbappé. “He is not at his best level, but you have to give him time to adapt. You have to give him time to be able to do better.” The defeat left Madrid four points behind Barcelona, which on Tuesday ended a three-match winless streak in the league with a 5-1 rout at Mallorca. Madrid, which has a game in hand, had won three consecutive league games since a 4-0 loss at home in the “clasico” against Barcelona. Madrid has lost five of its last 11 matches in all competitions. Athletic moved to fourth place with the victory, its fourth consecutive across all competitions. Both matches on Tuesday and Wednesday were moved forward in the schedule because the clubs will be playing in the Spanish Super Cup in January. NEW YORK (AP) — Jay-Z says a rape allegation made against him is part of an extortion attempt. A woman who previously sued Sean “Diddy” Combs , alleging she was raped at an awards show after-party in 2000 when she was 13, amended the lawsuit Sunday to include a new allegation that Jay-Z was also at the party and participated in the sexual assault. The 24-time Grammy award winning rapper, producer and music mogul called the allegations “idiotic” and “heinous in nature" in a statement released by Roc Nation, one of his companies. His lawyer also argued Monday that his accuser, who is only identified as Jane Doe, should have to reveal her identity, or have her lawsuit dismissed outright. Attorney Alex Spiro said in a filing in Manhattan federal court that the woman hasn’t provided any specific evidence to justify her anonymity and that her “vague assertions of potential harm fall far short of the stringent requirements” under law. He also noted the court has already ruled that some of the other sexual misconduct lawsuits brought by the woman's attorney against Combs do not meet the criteria to proceed anonymously. “Mr. Carter deserves to know the identity of the person who is effectively accusing him — in sensationalized, publicity-hunting fashion — of criminal conduct, demanding massive financial compensation, and tarnishing a reputation earned over decades,” Spiro wrote. “He has never been accused of, let alone engaged in, any sexual misconduct.” Jay-Z, in his statement released earlier on social media, also revealed that he had anonymously sued the woman's lawyer, Tony Buzbee, alleging he was trying to blackmail the rapper by threatening to make the rape allegation public if he didn't agree to a legal settlement. He said Buzbee sent a letter to his lawyer appearing to seek a settlement, but the letter had the “opposite effect" on him. “It made me want to expose you for the fraud you are in a VERY public fashion,” Jay-Z's statement read. “So no, I will not give you ONE RED PENNY!!” The litigation is part of a wave of sexual assault lawsuits levied against Combs as the hip-hop mogul remains in custody in New York awaiting trial on federal sex trafficking charges . The unnamed woman says she was hanging around Radio City Music Hall during the 2000 MTV Video Music Awards and managed to talk a limousine driver into bringing her to a celebrity-studded party at a private residence after the event. She said that while she was in the limousine, she was asked to sign a nondisclosure document. Once at the party, the lawsuit said, she took a drink that made her feel “woozy and lightheaded” and went into a bedroom to lie down. She said that Combs and Jay-Z, whose legal name is Shawn Carter, then barged into the room along with another unnamed celebrity and raped her. The woman said she eventually escaped the room, fled the house and called for a ride from a nearby gas station. Buzbee, a personal injury lawyer in Houston, said the notion that he was trying to blackmail Jay-Z is “stupid and laughable,” and that his letter simply sought confidential mediation in the litigation. “What he fails to say in his recent statement is that my firm sent his lawyer a basic demand letter on behalf of an alleged victim and that victim never demanded a penny from him,” he said in an emailed statement. “Since I sent the letter on her behalf, Mr. Carter has not only sued me, but he has tried to bully and harass me and this plaintiff. His conduct has had the opposite impact. She is emboldened. I’m very proud of her resolve.” Buzbee announced at a news conference in October that he represents some 120 people — both men and women — with allegations of sexual misconduct against Combs. His firm, which has set up a 1-800 number for accusers, began filing a wave of suits against the hip-hop mogul a few weeks later. Jay-Z, in his statement, challenged Buzbee to seek criminal charges and said his “heart and support goes out to true victims in the world.” He also lamented that he and wife Beyoncé will likely have to address the claims with their three children and “explain the cruelty and greed of people.” “I mourn yet another loss of innocence,” Jay-Z wrote. Combs' lawyers, in a statement, also dismissed Buzbee’s lawsuits as “shameless publicity stunts, designed to extract payments from celebrities who fear having lies spread about them, just as lies have been spread about Mr. Combs.” Combs was denied bail a third time last month. He’s pleaded not guilty to charges he coerced and abused women for years and faces trial in May. Jay-Z and Combs are part of a generation of hip-hop titans who rose to prominence in the 2000s, emerging as wide-ranging entrepreneurs and two of the world’s wealthiest rappers. Earlier this year, Forbes estimated Jay-Z’s net worth to be $2.5 billion. The artists have collaborated over the years, with Jay-Z being featured on Combs' debut album, “No Way Out” and Combs appearing on Jay-Z’s sophomore album, “In My Lifetime, Vol. 1.” While the pair has been frequently photographed together at events, they've also been competitors. Diddy launched his Bad Boy Records around the same time Jay-Z launched his Roc-A-Fella record label. AP Music Writer Maria Sherman in New York contributed to this story. WASHINGTON — A top White House official said Wednesday at least eight U.S. telecom firms and dozens of nations were impacted by a Chinese hacking campaign. Deputy national security adviser Anne Neuberger offered new details about the breadth of the sprawling Chinese hacking campaign that gave officials in Beijing access to private texts and phone conversations of an unknown number of Americans. FILE - The American and Chinese flags wave at Genting Snow Park ahead of the 2022 Winter Olympics, in Zhangjiakou, China, on Feb. 2, 2022. A top White House official on Wednesday said at least eight U.S. telecom firms and dozens of nations have been impacted by a Chinese hacking campaign. (AP Photo/Kiichiro Sato, File) Neuberger divulged the scope of the hack a day after the FBI and the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency issued guidance intended to help root out the hackers and prevent similar cyberespionage in the future. White House officials cautioned that the number of telecommunication firms and countries impacted could grow. The U.S. believes the hackers were able to gain access to communications of senior U.S. government officials and prominent political figures through the hack, Neuberger said. “We don’t believe any classified communications has been compromised,” Neuberger added during a call with reporters. She added that Biden was briefed on the findings and the White House “made it a priority for the federal government to do everything it can to get to the bottom this.” US officials recommend encrypted messaging apps amid "Salt Typhoon" cyberattack, attributed to China, targeting AT&T, Verizon, and others. The Chinese embassy in Washington rejected the accusations that it was responsible for the hack Tuesday after the U.S. federal authorities issued new guidance. “The U.S. needs to stop its own cyberattacks against other countries and refrain from using cyber security to smear and slander China,” embassy spokesperson Liu Pengyu said. The embassy did not immediately respond to messages Wednesday. White House officials believe the hacking was regionally targeted and the focus was on very senior government officials. Federal authorities confirmed in October that hackers linked to China targeted the phones of then-presidential candidate Donald Trump and his running mate, Sen. JD Vance, along with people associated with Democratic candidate Vice President Kamala Harris. The number of countries impacted by the hack is currently believed to be in the “low, couple dozen,” according to a senior administration official. The official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity under rules set by the White House, said they believed the hacks started at least a year or two ago. The suggestions for telecom companies released Tuesday are largely technical in nature, urging encryption, centralization and consistent monitoring to deter cyber intrusions. If implemented, the security precautions could help disrupt the operation, dubbed Salt Typhoon, and make it harder for China or any other nation to mount a similar attack in the future, experts say. Trump's pick to head the Federal Bureau of Investigation Kash Patel was allegedly the target of cyberattack attempt by Iranian-backed hackers. Neuberger pointed to efforts made to beef up cybersecurity in the rail, aviation, energy and other sectors following the May 2021 ransomware attack on Colonial Pipeline . “So, to prevent ongoing Salt Typhoon type intrusions by China, we believe we need to apply a similar minimum cybersecurity practice,” Neuberger said. The cyberattack by a gang of criminal hackers on the critical U.S. pipeline, which delivers about 45% of the fuel used along the Eastern Seaboard, sent ripple effects across the economy, highlighting cybersecurity vulnerabilities in the nation’s aging energy infrastructure. Colonial confirmed it paid $4.4 million to the gang of hackers who broke into its computer systems as it scrambled to get the nation's fuel pipeline back online. Picture this: You're on vacation in a city abroad, exploring museums, tasting the local cuisine, and people-watching at cafés. Everything is going perfectly until you get a series of alerts on your phone. Someone is making fraudulent charges using your credit card, sending you into a panic. How could this have happened? Cyberattacks targeting travelers are nothing new. But as travel has increased in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, so has the volume of hackers and cybercriminals preying upon tourists. Financial fraud is the most common form of cybercrime experienced by travelers, but surveillance via public Wi-Fi networks, social media hacking, and phishing scams are also common, according to a survey by ExpressVPN . Spokeo consulted cybersecurity sources and travel guides to determine some of the best ways to protect your phone while traveling, from using a VPN to managing secure passwords. Online attacks are not the only type of crime impacting travelers—physical theft of phones is also a threat. Phones have become such invaluable travel aids, housing our navigation tools, digital wallets, itineraries, and contacts, that having your phone stolen, lost, or compromised while abroad can be devastating. Meanwhile, traveling can make people uniquely vulnerable to both cyber and physical attacks due to common pitfalls like oversharing on social media and letting your guard down when it comes to taking risks online. Luckily, there are numerous precautions travelers can take to safeguard against cyberattacks and phone theft. Hackers can—and do—target public Wi-Fi networks at cafés and hotels to gain access to your personal information or install malware onto your device, particularly on unsecured networks. Travelers are especially vulnerable to these types of cybersecurity breaches because they are often more reliant on public Wi-Fi than they would be in their home countries where they have more robust phone plans. This reliance on public, unsecured networks means travelers are more likely to use those networks to perform sensitive tasks like financial transfers, meaning hackers can easily gain access to banking information or other passwords. One easy way to safeguard yourself against these breaches is to use a virtual private network, or VPN, while traveling. VPNs are apps that encrypt your data and hide your location, preventing hackers from accessing personal information. An added bonus is that VPNs allow you to access websites that may be blocked or unavailable in the country you are visiting. To use a VPN, simply download a VPN app on your phone or computer, create an account, choose a server, and connect. If your phone falls into the wrong hands, there's a good chance you won't be getting it back. Out of those 91,000 phones stolen in London in 2022, only 1,915 (or about 2%) were recovered. The good news is that you can take precautions to make the loss of your phone less devastating by backing up your data before you travel. With backed-up data, you can acquire a new device and still access your photos, contacts, messages, and passwords. Moreover, if you have "Find My Device" or "Find My Phone" enabled, you can remotely wipe your stolen phone's data so the thief cannot access it. It's safest to back up your data to a hard drive and not just the cloud. That way, if you have to wipe your device, you don't accidentally erase the backup, too. In order for the previous tip on this list to work, "Find My Phone" must be turned on in advance, but remotely wiping your device isn't the only thing this feature allows you to do. The "Find My Phone" feature enables you to track your device, as long as it's turned on and not in airplane mode. This is particularly helpful if you misplaced your phone or left it somewhere since it can help you retrace your steps. While this feature won't show you the live location of a phone that has been turned off, it will show the phone's last known location. With "Find My Phone," you can also remotely lock your phone or enable "Lost Mode," which locks down the phone, suspends any in-phone payment methods, and displays contact information for returning the phone to you. If your phone was stolen, experts caution against taking matters into your own hands by chasing down the thief, since this could land you in a potentially dangerous situation and is unlikely to result in getting your phone back. House holds moment of silence for American Omer Neutra killed by Hamas on Oct 7, 2023. A bipartisan group of lawmakers in the U.S. House of Representatives on Tuesday night held a moment of silence for American-Israeli Omer Neutra who was determined this week to have been killed by Hamas on Oct. 7, 2023, after it was believed that he had been alive for more than a year. Neutra, 21 years old, was a tank platoon commander in the 7th Armored Brigade’s 77th Battalion in the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) and was among the first to respond to the Hamas attack that ultimately killed some 1,200 people and initially saw the abduction of more than 250 men, women and children. His parents, Orna and Ronen, who spoke with Fox News Digital just days prior to the tragic development, believed their son was still alive after the IDF had long assessed that he, along with Nimrod Cohen, another soldier from his tank, were taken hostage into Gaza and remained alive . An image of Omer Neutra is displayed at his memorial service Tuesday, Dec. 3, 2024 at the Midway Jewish Center in Syosset, N.Y. (AP Photo/Philip Marcelo) (AP Photo/Philip Marcelo) 7 US HOSTAGES STILL HELD BY HAMAS TERRORISTS AS FAMILIES PLEAD FOR THEIR RELEASE: 'THIS IS URGENT' "For 420 days Omer’s parents and his brother Daniel have done everything they can with the love and support of hundreds of thousands of others to free their son from captivity," Rep. Tom Suozzi, D-N.Y., who represents the Neutra family’s district, said from the House floor. "Every day they soldiered on through alternating deep sorrow and brief bursts of hopefulness. They went from crushing anxiety to steely determination. "Just a few days ago we learned that this courageous young man, this bright light, this courageous idealist, made the ultimate sacrifice," Suozzi continued. "Omer had not been alive for the last 422 days, he was murdered on Oct. 7." Footage from the attack on Omer’s tank showed the commander, as well as three others, Shaked Dahan, Oz Daniel and Nimrod Cohen being pulled from the military vehicle by Hamas terrorists and being taken captive . Daniel and Dahan had previously been assessed to have been killed following the attack, and according to the IDF, intelligence now suggests Omer, a descendant of Holocaust survivors, was also killed on Oct. 7. 2023. In a memorial service held for Omer on Tuesday in the Long Island synagogue where he reportedly celebrated his bar mitzvah years earlier, Omer's father Ronen, said the news had left them "breathless and empty." "For over a year now, we’ve been breathing life into your being, my beautiful boy," Orna said through tears, according to reports. "With the hope and love of so many, we kept going and going and going, keeping you alive, speaking your name from every outlet, pushing any hint of despair, not stopping to breathe or to take in the deep pain of your absence." "Now things are clear," she said to the reported 1,500 attendees at the service. "But not as we’d hoped." Onra and Ronen have described their son as loving, a good friend and an athlete, but they also highlighted his ability to lead and how his actions on Oct. 7, 2023 saved lives. Omer’s body is believed to still be held by Hamas along with the six other American hostages, only three of whom are still assessed by the IDF to be alive at this time, including Edan Alexander, Sagui Dekel-Chen and Keith Siegel. Hersh Goldberg-Polin's body was recovered after he, along with five others, were discovered to have been murdered by Hamas in the tunnels in Gaza in August. Texas' abortion pill lawsuit against New York doctor marks new challenge to interstate telemedicine Texas has sued a New York doctor for prescribing abortion pills to a Texas woman via telemedicine. It appears to be the first challenge in the U.S. to a state shield law that's intended to protect prescribers in Democratic-controlled states from being punished by states with abortion bans. Prescriptions like these, made online and over the phone, are a key reason that the number of abortions has increased across the U.S. even after state bans started taking effect. Most abortions in the U.S. involve pills rather than procedures. Anti-abortion groups are increasingly focusing on the rise of pills. Syrians cheer end of 50 years of Assad rule at first Friday prayers since government fell DAMASCUS (AP) — Exuberant Syrians observed the first Friday prayers since the ouster of President Bashar Assad, gathering in the capital’s historic main mosque, its largest square and around the country to celebrate the end of half a century of authoritarian rule. The newly installed interim prime minister delivered the sermon at the Umayyad Mosque, declaring that a new era of “freedom, dignity and justice” was dawning for Syria. The gatherings illustrated the dramatic changes that have swept over Syria less than a week after insurgents marched into Damascus and toppled Assad. Amid the jubilation, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken met with allies around the region and called for an “inclusive and non-sectarian” interim government. US military flies American released from Syrian prison to Jordan, officials say WASHINGTON (AP) — The U.S. military has brought an American who was imprisoned in Syria for seven months out of the country. That's according to two U.S. officials, who said Friday that Travis Timmerman has been flown to Jordan on a U.S. military helicopter. The 29-year-old Timmerman told The Associated Press earlier Friday he had gone to Syria on a Christian pilgrimage and was not ill-treated while in a notorious detention facility operated by Syrian intelligence. He said he was freed by “the liberators who came into the prison and knocked the door down (of his cell) with a hammer.” New Jersey governor wants more federal resources for probe into drone sightings TOMS RIVER, N.J. (AP) — New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy has asked the Biden administration to put more resources into the ongoing investigation of mysterious drone sightings being reported in the state and other parts of the region. Murphy, a Democrat, made the request in a letter Thursday, noting that state and local law enforcement remain “hamstrung” by existing laws and policies in their efforts to successfully counteract any nefarious drone activity. Murphy and other officials say there is no evidence that the drones pose a national security or a public safety threat. A state lawmaker says up to 180 aircraft have been reported to authorities since Nov. 18. Nancy Pelosi hospitalized after she 'sustained an injury' from fall on official trip to Luxembourg WASHINGTON (AP) — Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has been hospitalized after she “sustained an injury” during an official engagement in Luxembourg, according to a spokesman. Pelosi is 84. She was in Europe to mark the 80th anniversary of the Battle of the Bulge in World War II. Her spokesman, Ian Krager, did not describe the nature of her injury or give any additional details, but a person familiar with the incident said that Pelosi tripped and fell while at an event with the other members of Congress. The person requested anonymity to discuss the fall because they were not authorized to speak about it publicly. Russia targets Ukrainian infrastructure with a massive attack by cruise missiles and drones KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — Russia has launched a massive aerial attack against Ukraine. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy says Russia fired 93 cruise and ballistic missiles and almost 200 drones in Friday's bombardments. He says it is one of the heaviest bombardments of the country’s energy sector since Russia’s full-scale invasion almost three years ago. He says Ukrainian defenses shot down 81 missiles, including 11 cruise missiles that were intercepted by F-16 warplanes provided by Western allies earlier this year. Zelenskyy renewed his plea for international unity against Russian President Vladimir Putin. But uncertainty surrounds how the war might unfold next year. President-elect Donald Trump has vowed to end the war and has thrown into doubt whether vital U.S. military support for Kyiv will continue. Trump’s lawyers rebuff DA's idea for upholding his hush money conviction, calling it 'absurd' NEW YORK (AP) — President-elect Donald Trump’s lawyers are again urging a judge to throw out his hush money conviction. In a court filing Friday, they balked at the prosecution’s “absurd” idea for preserving the verdict by treating the case the way some courts do when a defendant dies before sentencing. The Manhattan district attorney’s office is asking Judge Juan M. Merchan to “pretend as if one of the assassination attempts against President Trump had been successful,” Trump’s lawyers wrote in a blistering 23-page response. In court papers made public Tuesday, District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s office proposed an array of options for keeping the historic conviction on the books after Trump’s lawyers filed paperwork earlier this month asking for the case to be dismissed. Some in seafood industry see Trump as fishermen's friend, but tariffs could make for pricier fish PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — The incoming administration of President-elect Donald Trump is likely to bring big changes to seafood, one of the oldest sectors of the U.S. economy. Some in the industry believe the returning president will be more responsive to its needs. Economic analysts paint a more complicated picture, as they fear Trump’s pending trade hostilities with major trading partners Canada and China could make an already pricy kind of protein more expensive. Conservationists also fear Trump’s emphasis on deregulation could jeopardize fish stocks already in peril. But many in the commercial fishing and seafood processing industries said they expect Trump to allow fishing in protected areas and crack down on offshore wind expansion. OpenAI's legal battle with Elon Musk reveals internal turmoil over avoiding AI 'dictatorship' A 7-year-old rivalry between tech leaders Elon Musk and Sam Altman over who should run OpenAI and best avoid an artificial intelligence ‘dictatorship’ is now heading to a federal judge as Musk seeks to halt the ChatGPT maker’s ongoing conversion into a for-profit company. Musk, an early OpenAI investor and board member, sued the artificial intelligence company earlier this year. Musk has since escalated the dispute, adding new claims and asking for a court order that would stop OpenAI’s plans to convert itself into a for-profit business more fully. OpenAI is filing its response Friday. Paula Abdul settles lawsuit alleging sexual assault by 'American Idol' producer Nigel Lythgoe LOS ANGELES (AP) — Paula Abdul and former “American Idol” producer Nigel Lythgoe have agreed to settle a lawsuit in which she alleged he sexually assaulted her in the early 2000s when she was a judge on the show. Abdul filed a notice of settlement in a Los Angeles court Thursday. The lawsuit filed nearly a year ago had also accused Lythgoe of sexually assaulting Abdul after she left “American Idol” and became a judge on Lythgoe’s other show “So You Think You Can Dance.” Lythgoe said at the time that the allegations were “an appalling smear.” Both sides said in statements Friday that they were glad to put the case behind them.casino slot online free

For orchardist and Freshco director Greig Taylor there is nothing better than looking out over his orchard knowing he is growing apples efficiently and cost-effectively. He has called on technology and evolution to enhance effective water usage in his orchards and wants more people to understand how they do it. Taylor opened up one of his orchards to Hawke’s Bay Today earlier this year to help reassure the public that water was being put to good use and not wasted. “As water users, we feel there is a lack of understanding and a bit of education we can do.” At River Cottage Orchard on Davis Rd in Longlands, Hastings, Taylor is now seeing the impacts of his improved tree structures.OTTAWA — Donald Trump ’s comment to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau about Canada becoming “a 51st state” was a “joke” made in a good-humoured social context and not a serious comment, says Dominic LeBlanc, the only cabinet minister at a Mar-a-Lago dinner Friday night. Citing two unnamed sources, Fox News reported Monday night that Trump said he would levy his threatened 25 per cent tariffs against Canadian products if his concern about border security and trade deficits isn’t resolved. Fox News further reported that when Trudeau replied it would kill the Canadian economy, Trump said if Canada can’t survive unless it is ripping off the U.S. to the tune of $100 billion, it could become “the 51st state” and Trudeau could become governor. Fox News also reported that so-called nervous laughter ensued with someone at the table saying Canada would be a very liberal state, and Trump suggesting it could become two — one conservative and one liberal. The details reported by Fox News report were not confirmed by the Canadian government, but nor was the statement attributed to Trump denied. Before a cabinet meeting Tuesday, LeBlanc was asked if it shows Trump thinks Canada is a joke. He responded defensively, saying, “Not at all, not at all. That was not the context at all. In a three-hour social evening at the president’s residence in Florida on a long weekend of American Thanksgiving, the conversation was going to be lighthearted. The President was telling jokes. The President was teasing us. It was, of course, on that issue, in no way a serious comment we had.” LeBlanc repeated the government’s lines since Saturday that the two leaders and a handful of advisers had a wide-ranging conversation about trade and border security issues “that was very productive.” “But the fact that there’s a warm, cordial relationship between the two leaders and the President is able to joke like that for us was a — we don’t have a transcript. Nobody, if you look carefully at the picture, nobody had pads that were taking notes. It was a social evening,” LeBlanc insisted. “It wasn’t a meeting in a boardroom with 10 bureaucrats keeping notes ... And there were moments where it was entertaining and funny, and there were moments where we were able to do, we think, some good work for Canada.” On Tuesday, Trump posted a photoshopped image on his Truth Social platform, of him standing next to a large Canadian flag overlooking a mountain range, dominated by what looked to be (and Google Lens said was) the Matterhorn in Switzerland, with the message: “Oh Canada!” It was not clear what Trump’s intention was. On Tuesday, Trump posted a photoshopped image on his Truth Social platform, of him standing next to a large Canadian flag overlooking a mountain range, dominated by what looked to be (and Google Lens said was) the Matterhorn in Switzerland, with the message: “Oh Canada!” Neither Trudeau nor Chrystia Freeland, his deputy and finance minister who was not on the trip, commented to reporters Tuesday about the so-called joke about the 51st state. Former Conservative interim leader Rona Ambrose in an interview with the CBC said while it’s not clear exactly what was said, she didn’t take it as a joke. “It’s not funny, and it’s not funny to be threatened with a 25 per cent tariff across the board for a country that is so dependent on trade with the U.S.,” said Ambrose. Ambrose previously sat on Trudeau’s outside advisory council during the renegotiation of NAFTA, and doesn’t believe that Trudeau and Trump have the kind of rapport that will exempt Canada from tariffs. “I don’t think that there’s a special relationship between the two leaders, and that’s unfortunate, because I think relationships do make a difference.” But she said the “saving grace” may be that many premiers and U.S. governors, and business leaders do have the ability to “bring to bear some pressure on President Trump.” No Canadian media were at Mar-a-Lago or even aware of the trip before internet flight trackers published the prime minister’s plane was en route to Florida. The prime minister’s team said Trump’s advisers had insisted the meeting remain confidential until the dinner started. Canadian accounts of what was said after their meeting, including the Star’s, relied on brief comments by LeBlanc over the weekend, and on confidential sources — who spoke on condition they not be identified in order to talk about the private discussions. The Star reported Saturday on what Trump and Trudeau discussed, and on Monday, the Star reported Trudeau’s team believes it may be possible for Canada to get a reprieve on the threatened tariffs if it addresses the border concerns of the incoming Trump Administration. A senior Canadian official said Trump was clear his focus is on stopping illegal immigration, any flow of illegal drugs — especially fentanyl — and also that he likes tariffs and dislikes trade deficits. But sources did not reveal Trump’s 51st-state comment before Fox News published it. Several Canadian cabinet ministers declined comment Tuesday. “I’ll pass, thank you,” said Jenna Sudds, the minister of families, children and social development. “I think he was trying to joke, but I wasn’t there,” said International Development Minister Ahmed Hussen. J Industry Minister François-Philippe Champagne insisted the meeting itself is important. “The one thing that you should take note is that Prime Minister Trudeau was the first leader of the G7 to be hosted by President Trump. I think that is really significant. That is a testament to the strategic nature of our relationship.” With a file from Ryan Tumilty

Lucid Group ( LCID 14.83% ) is an emerging company in the electric vehicle (EV) space that has caught the attention of investors since its merger with a special purpose acquisition company (SPAC) three years ago. Its luxury EVs boast an impressive driving range, and the company is looking to take on industry giants like Tesla . While Lucid stands to gain from the growing long-term demand for electric vehicles, its journey to production hasn't been without hurdles. After reaching a peak of $57.75 per share in late 2021, Lucid's stock has seen a steep decline of 95%, currently trading under $3 per share. If you're thinking of scooping up shares of this promising electric vehicle company, consider the following. Lucid looks to claim its stake in the EV market Lucid Group focuses on manufacturing luxury EVs in pursuit of a more affluent customer base. The company aims to position itself as a premium brand in the competitive automotive industry with its commitment to delivering a high-quality driving experience. One distinguishing feature of Lucid's vehicles is their impressive range. The flagship Lucid Air Pure, priced at $69,900, offers an exceptional range of 420 miles and boasts 430 horsepower. For those seeking even more performance, the Ground Touring model, priced at $110,900, has 819 horsepower and an impressive driving range of 512 miles. In addition to its impressive range, Lucid's fast-charging technology allows drivers to gain 200 miles of range in just 12 minutes, making it an appealing choice for long-distance travel. One thing Lucid doesn't lack is support. Since 2018, the Public Investment Fund (PIF) of Saudi Arabia has invested billions in the luxury EV maker. At the end of the third quarter, Lucid had over $5 billion in liquidity, providing it with enough funding through 2026. The company also launched its long-awaited SUV model, the Lucid Gravity Grand Touring, in early November and is taking orders for the EV SUV, priced at $94,900. The company began production of this vehicle in December, which boasts an impressive driving range of 450 miles. Lucid has solid backing from the Public Investment Fund and is making progress as it rolls out new vehicles, which could make it an appealing buy. However, investors will want to consider the company's financial situation before investing. Lucid has tapped investors for money numerous times It's been a difficult journey for the automaker, and things haven't quite gone according to plan. When Lucid first went public in 2021, Lucid management projected it would produce and deliver 49,000 vehicles by 2023 and 90,000 by this year . Last year, the company manufactured 8,428 vehicles and delivered 6,001. This year, Lucid has delivered 7,142 vehicles, including 2,781 in the third quarter, a 91% increase from one year ago. The company says it is on track for 9,000 vehicles this year. Lucid has had a slow ramp-up in production, and another pressing concern that investors should be mindful of is its cash burn rate. The company's revenue through the first three quarters of the year is up 31%, to $573 million. However, expenses continue to balloon in comparison. This year, expenses have been around $2.9 billion, and Lucid has a staggering operating loss of $2.3 billion . It lost a similar amount of money through the same period last year. For an up-and-coming, pre-profit company like Lucid, funding is crucial for its long-term success. Because it doesn't have any profit to reinvest into the business, it has had to raise capital several times from outside investors to stay afloat. This includes capital raises through public equity offerings and investments from Saudi Arabia's PIF. In October, Lucid raised $719 million in capital by selling 262.5 million shares priced at around $2.66 per share. The PIF invested another $1 billion in Lucid, bringing the PIF's total investment in Lucid since 2018 to $8.9 billion. The move provides Lucid with enough funding for a financial runway through 2026. LCID Revenue (TTM) data by YCharts Since 2022, Lucid's outstanding shares have increased from 1.65 billion to 2.32 billion, or 40%, as it has repeatedly tapped equity markets and watered down investors' positions in the process. Should you buy, hold, or sell Lucid stock? Lucid Group's luxury EVs are pushing the limits of EVs, and the company could benefit from long-term tailwinds for EVs. According to projections from the consulting firm PwC, the number of EVs in the U.S. could reach 27 million by 2030 and 92 million by 2040. If Lucid can gain its footing and generate positive cash flows, it has a real chance to grow rapidly alongside this market. The company is taking steps to rein in costs but has required further investments from equity offerings and the PIF to keep things going. While the company has a cash runway to 2026, I'd like to see it make progress in improving its bottom-line results. Until then, investors should avoid or sell the stock until more tangible positive results are visible.3 Bold Stock Market Predictions for 2025

TEHRAN – With 65 publications on four-dimensional (4D) printing over a period of ten years, Iran ranks first among Islamic countries, according to a report released by the Web of Science. The report has included data from 2014 to 2023. The country’s global ranking in 4D printing publications is 11, IRNA reported. Iran also ranks second in publications related to the fifth generation of the industry (Industry 5.0) with 1,625 documents. Turkey (with 1,817 documents) and Malaysia (with 1,611 documents) rank first and third, respectively. 3D printing refers to the process of creating three-dimensional objects layer by layer. Each layer is placed one after another. Four-dimensional printing (4D printing) uses the same techniques of 3D printing through computer-programmed deposition of material in successive layers to create a three-dimensional object. However, in 4D printing, the resulting 3D shape is able to morph into different forms in response to environmental stimulus, with the 4th dimension being the time-dependent shape change after the printing. It is, therefore, a type of programmable matter, wherein after the fabrication process, the printed product reacts with parameters within the environment (humidity, temperature, voltage) and changes its form accordingly. The Fifth Industrial Revolution follows the Fourth Industrial Revolution and measures the countries’ progress in the first decade of the 21st century. This generation of industry not only focuses on meeting economic needs but also pays specific attention to environmental needs and emphasizes green production as a key priority. The Fifth Industrial Revolution incorporates concepts such as sustainability, human-centeredness, and concern for the environment in addition to transforming the industrial structure through the utilization of artificial intelligence (AI), internet of things (IoT), and big data, which was debated in the Fourth Industrial Revolution. The fifth-generation industry seeks to strengthen the role of these technologies in response to new needs and emerging requirements in the industrial, social, and environmental fields, and this approach includes the extensive use of data and artificial intelligence to increase the flexibility of production and creation of value chains will be more powerful in the era of digital transformation. Industry 5.0 is all about the integration of humans and machines. This means that instead of machines working independently from humans, they will work together to create things more efficiently. In the fifth generation of the industry, technologies such as 4D printing, collaborative robots (cobots), augmented and virtual reality, cognitive computing, digital twin and additive manufacturing are used. Iran ranks 23 in additive manufacturing technologies, 29 in cognitive computing, 37 in virtual reality, 38 in digital twin technology, 42 in augmented reality, and 60 in collaborative robots globally. According to a report released by the Web of Science database, Iran (with 17,458 documents) ranks first in neural network technology as well as multi-agent systems (with 351 documents) among Islamic countries. The report included data in a twenty-year period from 2004 to 2023. The country secures a ranking of 6th in neural network technology and 12th in multi-agent systems globally. Turkey with 9,078 and Saudi Arabia with 7,971 documents in neural network technology rank second and third respectively. In multi-agent systems, Tunis with 233 documents, and Morocco with 231 documents are placed second and third. Iran ranks second in artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning, and robotics among Islamic nations. The country also ranks 16th in the world in AI technologies; 25th in visual computing and natural language processing; 17th in machine learning; and 27th in robotics. The trend of scientific production in neural networks, machine learning, and AI technologies in Iran has been upward in the last decade compared to other AI-related technologies. According to the results, in the field of neural networks, the trend of scientific production has been upward increasing from 950 documents in 2014 to 2,207 documents in 2023. In machine learning, scientific productions have risen from 81 documents in 2014 to 1656 documents in 2023. Also, in the field of artificial intelligence, scientific productions have escalated from 98 documents in 2014 to 647 documents in 2023. Over the past 20 years, the majority of scientific productions in the field of artificial intelligence have been associated with the University of Tehran, Tabriz University, and Amirkabir University of Technology; and in visual computing and natural language processing, the University of Tehran, Amirkabir University of Technology and Sharif University of Technology are ranked first to third respectively. The majority of scientific production in machine learning is connected to the University of Tehran, Amirkabir University of Technology, and Tarbiat Modares University; and in robotics, it is attributed to the University of Tehran, Sharif University of Technology, and Amirkabir University of Technology. University of Tehran, Tabriz University, and Iran University of Science and Technology in neural networks, and Amirkabir University of Technology, Iran University of Science and Technology, and University of Tehran in multi-agent systems, account for a significant share of scientific productions. LANDOVER, Md. (AP) — Austin Seibert missed his second extra point of the game with 21 seconds left after Jayden Daniels and Terry McLaurin connected on an 86-yard touchdown, Juanyeh Thomas returned the ensuing onside kick attempt for a touchdown and the Dallas Cowboys pulled out a 34-26 victory Sunday that extended the Washington Commanders’ skid to three games. Seibert, who missed the previous two games with a right hip injury, was wide left on the point-after attempt following a low snap. Thomas then took the kick back 43 yards as the Cowboys (4-7) ended their losing streak at five in improbable fashion. Part of that was the play of backup Cooper Rush, who threw for 247 yards and two TDs in his third start in place of starter Dak Prescott. Part was also the defense forcing two turnovers, as Chauncey Golston ripped the ball out of Brian Robinson Jr.’s hands for what was called an interception of Daniels in the second quarter, and Donovan Wilson stripped John Bates midway through the fourth. KaVonte Turpin provided the fireworks with a spinning, 99-yard kickoff return TD seconds after Daniels found Zach Ertz in the end zone and scored on a 2-point conversion to cut the deficit to three with 3:02 left. In the final three minutes alone, the Commanders (7-5) scored 10 points and allowed Thomas’ TD. All that after the score was 10-9 through three quarters before madness ensued. CHIEFS 30, PANTHERS 27 CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Patrick Mahomes threw for 269 yards and three touchdowns , Spencer Shrader kicked a 31-yard field goal as time expired and Kansas City beat Carolina to reach double-digit wins for the 10th straight season. Noah Gray caught two TD passes as the Chiefs (10-1) bounced back from last week’s 30-21 loss at Buffalo and won at the buzzer yet again in a season of narrow escapes. DeAndre Hopkins also had a touchdown catch for the two-time defending Super Bowl champions, who scored on their first five possessions. Bryce Young finished 21 of 35 for 262 yards and a touchdown for the Panthers (3-8), who had their two-game winning streak snapped. David Moore had six receptions for 80 yards and a touchdown. Trailing 27-19, Young completed a fourth-down pass to Adam Thielen to move the chains, then went deep for the veteran receiver, who drew a pass-interference penalty on Chamarri Conner. That set up a 1-yard touchdown run by Chuba Hubbard. LIONS 24, COLTS 6 INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Jahmyr Gibbs rushed for two scores and David Montgomery added a third touchdown run, leading Detroit to a victory over Indianapolis. Gibbs finished with 21 carries for 90 yards as the Lions (10-1) extended their league-high winning streak to nine straight. Detroit has its been 11-game record since the franchise’s inaugural season in 1934. Jared Goff continued his sensational season, too, completing 26 of 36 throws for 269 yards. The Colts (5-7) lost their second straight home game and for the fourth time in their past five games. Anthony Richardson was 11 of 28 with 172 yards while rushing 10 times for 61 yards. While Indy managed to hold the NFL’s highest-scoring offense largely in check Sunday, it was doomed by its inability to finish drives with touchdowns. BUCCANEERS 30, GIANTS 7 EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) — Baker Mayfield catapulted into the end zone on a spectacular 10-yard scramble for one of Tampa Bay’s four rushing touchdowns, and the Buccaneers beat the Giants and new starting quarterback Tommy DeVito, snapping a four-game losing streak and extending New York’s skid to six. The Giants’ decisions this week to bench and then release quarterback Daniel Jones did nothing to help the NFL’s lowest-scoring offense. DeVito threw for 189 yards, mostly in the second half with New York well on its way to its sixth straight loss at home, where it is winless. Meanwhile, the Buccaneers dominated in every phase in a near-perfect perfect performance that featured TD runs of 1 yard by Sean Tucker, 6 yards by Bucky Irving and 1 yard by Rachaad White. After recent losses to the Ravens, 49ers and Chiefs, Tampa Bay (5-6) moved within one game of idle Atlanta in the NFC South. Tampa Bay scored on five of its on first six possessions to open a 30-0 lead, and none was more exciting than Mayfield’s TD run with 12 seconds left in the first half. On a second-and-goal from the 10, he avoided pressure and went for the end zone. He was hit by Cor’Dale Flott low and Dru Phillips high around the 2-yard line, and he was airborne when he crossed the goal line. The ball came loose when he hit the turf but he jumped up and flexed — seemingly mocking DeVito’s go-to celebration — as the Bucs took a 23-0 lead. DOLPHINS 34, PATRIOTS 15 MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (AP) — Tua Tagovailoa threw for 317 yards and four touchdowns, including two scores to running back De’Von Achane, and Miami routed New England. The Dolphins (5-6) have a thin margin for error the rest of the season but have kept themselves afloat with a three-game winning streak. With their win at New England (3-9) in Week 5, the Dolphins have swept their division rivals in consecutive seasons for the first time since 1999-2000. Tagovailoa, who moved to 7-0 in his career against New England, entered the game with a league-high 73.4% completion rate and went 29 for 40. Backup Skylar Thompson replaced Tagovailoa with about 11 minutes left in what was already a blowout, but a bad handoff on his first play resulted in a fumble that was recovered by cornerback Christian Gonzalez and returned 63 yards for a touchdown. It cut New England’s deficit to 31-15, and Tagovailoa returned the next drive. TITANS 32, TEXANS 27 HOUSTON (AP) — Will Levis threw for 278 yards and his 70-yard touchdown pass to Chig Okonkwo put Tennessee on top in the fourth quarter and the Titans held on for a win over the Texans. Okonkwo grabbed a short pass and rumbled for the touchdown to put the Titans (3-8) up 30-27 with 91⁄2 minutes remaining. Safety Eric Murray missed a tackle that would have stopped him near midfield. The Texans (7-5) had a chance to tie it with less than two minutes remaining, but Ka’imi Fairbairn’s 28-yard field-goal attempt sailed wide left. He fell to the ground after the miss before getting up and slamming his helmet on the field. Titans coach Brian Callahan held both hands in the air and smiled after watching the miss that allowed his team to win on a day it had three turnovers. The Texans forced a three-and-out, but couldn’t move the ball after that and Harold Landry sacked C.J. Stroud in the end zone for a safety to make it 32-27 and allow Tennessee to snap a two-game skid. VIKINGS 30, BEARS 27, OT CHICAGO (AP) — Sam Darnold threw for 90 of his 330 yards in overtime to set up Parker Romo’s game-ending 29-yard field goal , and Minnesota outlasted Chicago after giving up 11 points in the final 22 seconds of regulation. Darnold threw two touchdown passes, Jordan Addison caught eight passes for a career-high 162 yards and a touchdown, and T.J. Hockenson had 114 yards receiving for the Vikings (9-2), who remained one game behind Detroit in the rugged NFC North. Caleb Williams threw for 340 yards and two touchdowns for the Bears (4-7), who lost their fifth straight. Minnesota appeared to have the game in hand, leading 27-16 with 1:56 left after Romo kicked a 26-yard field goal. But the Bears weren’t finished. Deandre Carter made up for a muffed punt that led to a touchdown in the third quarter with a 55-yard kickoff return to the 40. Williams took it from there, capping an eight-play drive with a 1-yard touchdown pass to Keenan Allen. A 2-point conversion pass to DJ Moore made it 27-24 with 22 seconds remaining. The Bears recovered the onside kick and Williams hit Moore over the middle for a 27-yard gain to the 30 before spiking the ball. Cairo Santos made a 48-yard field goal as time expired.

NoneNearly two-thirds of manufacturers are adopting a "power-of-two" strategy, ensuring the majority of their direct spending is sourced from two separate regions. Attractiveness of low-cost manufacturing hubs such as India and Brazil for FDI drops by 15%. LONDON , Dec. 10, 2024 /PRNewswire/ -- The World Economic Forum , in collaboration with global consultancy Kearney , has today released its latest report, Beyond Cost: Country Readiness for Manufacturing and Supply Chains , highlighting that more than 90% of manufacturing executives are prioritizing regional supply chain strategies. Firms have learned to adapt to recent supply disruptions (such as Covid and the Suez Canal blockage) in recent years, but the industrial landscape remains unsettled by a mix of geopolitical and environmental factors, including a year of numerous elections across the globe and the resulting impact of potential protectionist tariffs. As a result, regionalization is becoming a key tactic to safeguard against global trade disruptions. The findings from more than 300 global operations executives show that nearly two-thirds of manufacturers are adopting a "power-of-two" strategy, having the majority of their spend sourced across two separate regions. This shift moves beyond the traditional focus on best cost to include holistic factors such as infrastructure, technology, skilled labor, and sustainability. Foreign direct investment (FDI) in low-cost manufacturing declines as priorities shift The shift from "best-cost" to "value-driven" investment strategies is also playing a key role in foreign direct investment (FDI) trends in manufacturing hubs, with traditional low-cost regions losing their appeal. "Adapter" countries such as Brazil and India , characterized by a GDP per capita that sits below the global average and with a limited contribution of the manufacturing sector to GDP, have experienced a 15% decline in FDI attractiveness as cheap labor alone is no longer enough to sustain long-term investment. In contrast, "connectors" such as Bangladesh and Mexico which (like adapters) have historically traded on their best-cost status but whose contribution of manufacturing to GDP is higher, have seen the appeal of their inward investment improve by 14%. "Scalers" like Singapore and Ireland have, on average, seen steady FDI growth, up 2% thanks to strong infrastructure and favorable regulatory environments. Similarly, "convergers" such as the United States and Denmark have also seen an average 2% increase in FDI, attracting long-term investment by focusing on factors like sustainability and infrastructure. This shift in FDI confidence aligns with actual FDI changes over the same period. Countries with higher GDP per capita have experienced more significant FDI growth, regardless of the manufacturing sector's contribution to GDP. "Convergers" such as the US and Denmark experienced an average 295% rise in FDI in the past 10 years, while "scalers" like Singapore and Ireland saw an average 215% increase. On the lower end, "connectors" like Mexico and Bangladesh saw FDI growth of an average 144%, double that of "adapters" such as India and Brazil , which recorded just an average 74% increase. Per Kristian Hong , Partner and Americas Strategic Operations and Performance Lead, Kearney, commented: "With over 2 billion voters across 50 countries having cast ballots in 2024, 2025 will be a critical year for every company reliant on cross-border operations. "Plans to accelerate a sweeping range of policies, intended to reset global trade through tariffs and export controls, will require businesses to reassess their network manufacturing footprint beyond merely low-cost alone. A more complex and nuanced decision-making process is needed, one that considers flexibility and a country's ability to deliver environmental change in line with global strategic priorities." Kiva Allgood, Head, Centre for Advanced Manufacturing and Supply Chains, World Economic Forum added: "As global value chains undergo a profound transformation, countries and companies have a unique opportunity to redefine their competitive edge. "This report highlights how countries that deploy innovative policies and invest across these seven factors can position themselves as leaders in the evolving manufacturing landscape, driving economic growth and societal progress." The World Economic Forum and Kearney report identifies seven critical readiness factors that drive private sector decision-making and shape the attractiveness of a country amid the global rewiring of supply chains. These factors serve as a guide for policymakers and industries, covering: Infrastructure Resources and energy Technology Labor and skills Fiscal and regulatory Geopolitical landscape Environmental, social, and governance Read the full report here . Notes to editor To understand how businesses are adapting to the changing global value chain landscape, the World Economic Forum, in collaboration with Kearney, surveyed over 300 global operations executives and conducted 60 consultations on strategies for future-proofing supply chains. This paper evaluates countries' readiness for next-generation manufacturing across seven key factors, highlighting that attractiveness for manufacturing investment now goes beyond just cost. Jadion Anthony Richards, 44, and Akwele Nickeisha Lawes-Richards, 45, both of Danbury, Connecticut, were charged this month with one felony count of organized retail theft. Both went free last week after posting bail bonds of $100,000 for him and $30,000 for her, court records show. They're due back in Ramsey County District Court in St. Paul on Dec. 16. According to the criminal complaints, a Lululemon investigator had been tracking the pair even before police first confronted them on Nov. 14 at a store in suburban Roseville. The investigator told police the couple were responsible for hundreds of thousands of dollars in losses across the country, the complaints said. They would steal items and make fraudulent returns, it said. Police found suitcases containing more than $50,000 worth of Lululemon clothing when they searched the couple's hotel room in Bloomington, the complaint said. According to the investigator, they were also suspected in thefts from Lululemon stores in Colorado, Utah, New York and Connecticut, the complaint said. Within Minnesota, they were also accused of thefts at stores in Minneapolis and the suburbs of Woodbury, Edina and Minnetonka. The investigator said the two were part of a group that would usually travel to a city and hit Lululemon stores there for two days, return to the East Coast to exchange the items without receipts for new items, take back the new items with the return receipts for credit card refunds, then head back out to commit more thefts, the complaint said. In at least some of the thefts, it said, Richards would enter the store first and buy one or two cheap items. He'd then return to the sales floor where, with help from Lawes-Richards, they would remove a security sensor from another item and put it on one of the items he had just purchased. Lawes-Richards and another woman would then conceal leggings under their clothing. They would then leave together. When the security sensors at the door went off, he would offer staff the bag with the items he had bought, while the women would keep walking out, fooling the staff into thinking it was his sensor that had set off the alarm, the complaint said. Richards' attorney declined comment. Lawes-Richards' public defender did not immediately return a call seeking comment Monday. “This outcome continues to underscore our ongoing collaboration with law enforcement and our investments in advanced technology, team training and investigative capabilities to combat retail crime and hold offenders accountable,” Tristen Shields, Lululemon's vice president of asset protection, said in a statement. "We remain dedicated to continuing these efforts to address and prevent this industrywide issue.” The two are being prosecuted under a state law enacted last year that seeks to crack down on organized retail theft. One of its chief authors, Sen. Ron Latz, of St. Louis Park, said 34 states already had organized retail crime laws on their books. “I am glad to see it is working as intended to bring down criminal operations," Latz said in a statement. "This type of theft harms retailers in myriad ways, including lost economic activity, job loss, and threats to worker safety when crime goes unaddressed. It also harms consumers through rising costs and compromised products being resold online.” Two Minnesota women were also charged under the new law in August. They were accused of targeting a Lululemon store in Minneapolis. Copyright 2024 The Associated Press. All rights reserved. Joly touts ‘private’ diplomacy as Mexico criticizes Canada’s culture, trade

Traveling this holiday season? 10 things the TSA wants you to knowEAGAN, Minn. (AP) — The game had suddenly gone sideways for the Minnesota Vikings , their 11-point lead on the Chicago Bears having evaporated in the closing seconds. They straightened it out in overtime, no sweat, because Sam Darnold simply hasn't been fazed. Save for his occasional rash of turnovers, in games the Vikings still managed to win, Darnold proved again on Sunday in defeating the Bears that he's directing a passing attack with the potential to be one of the NFL 's most potent. “I think he’s a mentally tough guy. I think he’s a physically tough guy. I think he’s confident in the guys around him, and I think he’s confident in our system,” coach Kevin O'Connell said after the 30-27 victory. “I think when he just continues to play quarterback at a high level, I think we’re a tough team.” After the defense forced the Bears to punt on the opening possession of overtime, Darnold led the Vikings on a 68-yard drive to set up the game-ending field goal while overcoming a 7-yard sack on the first play and two subsequent setbacks with a false start and a holding penalty. On third-and-10 from the 21, he hit Jordan Addison near the sideline for 13 yards. On first-and-15 from the 29, Darnold threaded a throw to Justin Jefferson for 20 yards after he'd muscled his way through Bears cornerback Jaylon Johnson on a post route for the clutch catch after he'd been all but silenced all afternoon by a defense determined to constantly bracket him with double coverage. On second-and-11 from the 48, Darnold connected with a wide-open T.J. Hockenson underneath for 12 yards. Then two plays later off a second-and-8 play-action fake, he found Hockenson again on a deep corner route for 29 yards to put Parker Romo in prime position for the walk-off winner. “Just execute. It’s as simple as that. Just one play at a time," said Darnold, who went 22 for 34 for 330 yards and two touchdowns without a turnover. “I think I tell the guys that every single time in the huddle, but that’s my mindset every single time I’m out there on the field, especially in that situation.” Even when Jefferson continues to draw an extraordinary amount of coverage , the Vikings with Addison, Hockenson, Aaron Jones and the rest of their crew running O'Connell's system have proven they have an offense that can go win a game when it's required. That wouldn't be possible without Darnold, whose career rebirth has helped spark the Vikings (9-2) become one of the league's biggest surprises in what's now its most difficult division. “He’s cool, calm, collected,” Hockenson said. "That’s what you want as the leader of the huddle.” The Vikings' defense ranks ninth in the league on third downs, allowing a conversion rate of 34.5% after limiting the Bears to a 6-for-17 performance. The Vikings are tied for first on fourth downs with an allowance of 36.4% after the Bears went 2 for 3. Both conversions came in the fourth quarter during touchdown drives. The Vikings also rank fourth in the NFL in opponent points per drive (1.52). The Vikings had seven possessions that crossed the 20-yard line in Chicago, but only three of them yielded touchdowns. Their lone turnover was the type of game-altering giveaways they've struggled to eliminate this month, a fumble by Aaron Jones at the 1-yard line that ruined a promising first drive. The Vikings are tied for 20th in the league in red zone touchdown rate (53.9%) and are 17th in goal-to-go touchdowns (72%). Addison had eight catches for 162 yards, both career highs, and a touchdown on nine throws from Darnold. The second-year wide receiver has had a quieter season than his rookie year, but he stepped up in a significant way on an afternoon when Jefferson was as smothered by the opposing secondary as ever. TE Johnny Mundt had the onside kick glance off his shin as he charged toward the coverage, and the first kicking team recovery in the NFL this season helped the Bears extend the game. Mundt also had the false start on the overtime drive. His lone catch was a 7-yard gain when he was stopped short of the goal line, one play before the lost fumble. Mundt played 33 of 71 snaps and Hockenson took 48 snaps with Oliver out. The Vikings lost LT Cam Robinson (foot) and LB Ivan Pace (hamstring) to injuries in the first quarter against the Bears, and O'Connell said on Monday those players were still in "evaluation mode." Oliver (ankle) will have an opportunity to return after being sidelined last week. 101.7 — Darnold's passer rating, which ranks ninth in the NFL. Darnold has posted a 100-plus passer rating in nine of 11 games this season. He had only 12 such performances in 56 career starts before joining the Vikings. The Vikings have four of their next five games at home, starting with Arizona (6-5) this week, Atlanta (6-5) on Dec. 8 and a rematch with Chicago (4-7) in a Monday night game on Dec. 16. “I’m mad but I don’t eat glass,” explained Javier Milei in more than one friendly interview since being president. Just his way of justifying a dose of pragmatism that reached another peak of exposure in recent days with the G20 Leaders Summit in Brazil as the excuse. At the symbolic level Milei finally yielded, adhering to Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s “global alliance against hunger” and the final G20 statement from Rio de Janeiro where the main world powers advocated a decalogue of good economic, social and even environmental intentions. Always with reservations and explanations, while shunning the final family photo of the event as if to give some proud argument to his digital libertarian wolf-pack. Preceded a few hours beforehand by images of the frosty greeting between President Milei and his Brazilian colleague Lula. It was the first meeting between the two after a history of unfortunate insults. But, at the same time, Economy Minister Luis ‘Toto’ Caputo was signing with a Brazilian Mining and Energy colleague an understanding to open the door to Argentina selling gas from its Vaca Muerta mega-deposits to Brazil. Such libertarian flexibility was also ratified by Milei’s first meeting with his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping, as the head of state put behind him declarations of “assassins” and “Communists” and a refusal to negotiate between states. There was a previous stepping-stone towards that flexibility when Milei described China as “a very interesting trading partner,” adding “they don’t demand anything, just that you don’t bother them.” This presidential rewind came after China renewed the currency swaps propping up Argentina’s squalid Central Bank reserves, along with renewing its intention to keep investing in the country with an eye to the pending hydro-electric dams of Santa Cruz, mining and the reprivatisation of the Hidrovía waterway and the rail freight network. What would Donald Trump say about that? Milei also needed to show his flexibility with Emmanuel Macron in town. The centre-right French president stopped over in Buenos Aires prior to the G20 summit. Macron visited the Santa Cruz church, infiltrated during the 1976-1983 dictatorship by the naval officer Alfredo Astiz to identify the families of the abducted and the still missing French nuns Léonie Duquet and Alice Domon. Astiz was one of those recently visited by a troop of libertarian deputies at his Ezeiza prison cell. Argentina’s head of state also had to bite his tongue when Macron was explaining his opposition to the free-trade agreement between Mercosur and the European Union, due to the resistance of the French farming sector which fears unfair competition and aspires to not losing its protection. Ah, those Communists! Another summit with Italian premier Giorgia Meloni then followed. Did the far-right leader explain to Milei why she did not fire or reprimand her foreign minister after Italy voted at the United Nations in favour of the United States lifting its blockade against Cuba? Or why, in contrast to Argentina, Italy did not withdraw its UN peace-keeping troops from Lebanon? Those who frequented Néstor Kirchner’s office narrate that he used a stock phrase to banish fears when he began his presidency, explaining: “Do not listen to what I say, look at what I do.” Milei is paying a curious tribute to this maxim, and he’s not the only one. 2024 isn't over yet, but the S&P 500 ( ^GSPC 0.25% ) is set to cap off a banner year. Even though most Wall Street experts had expected only modest returns at the beginning of the year, the S&P 500 is up 28% year to date through Dec. 4, on track for one of its best years in history. The artificial intelligence (AI) boom, interest rate cuts, a resilient economy, and excitement around the incoming Trump administration have all combined to send stocks soaring for the second year in a row. This year's performance comes after strong results in 2023 when it jumped 24%, and there's another sign that 2024 is one of the most bullish years on record for the stock market. Through Dec. 4, the S&P 500 has closed at an all-time high 56 times. While it could add to that mark by the end of the year, that is still the fifth best showing since 1929. What the surge in record highs tells investors We're not even two years into a new bull market, but already some investors seem to smell a bubble. Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway has been a net seller of stocks every quarter this year as it stockpiles cash, and it even declined to repurchase its own stock for the first time in six years. Other investors have questioned the billions being poured into AI infrastructure, suggesting the consumer end market doesn't justify it. Stock valuations are also high by historical levels, as the S&P 500's price-to-earnings ratio has reached 30.3, according to some measurements, showing that stocks are expensive compared to historical averages. So how does 2024 compare to previous years with even more all-time highs? The table below shows the five years with the highest number of days when the S&P 500 reached a new all-time high. Year Annual Gain for S&P 500 # of Days S&P 500 Hit All-Time High 1964 13% 65 1995 34% 77 2017 22% 62 2021 29% 70 2024 YTD 28% 56 Data source: Bilello.blog and others. YTD = year to date. In two of the four years above, 1964 and 1995, the S&P 500 gained the following year. In 1965, the S&P 500 climbed another 9%. However, it fell 13% in 1966 as the bull run of the previous few years got overheated Meanwhile, in 1995, the dot-com boom was just beginning, and the stock market wouldn't peak until 2000. But for 2017 and 2021, the momentum didn't last. In 2018, the S&P 500 finished down 6% due to rising interest rates, fears of a trade war with China, and the threat of a federal government shutdown. And in 2022, stocks fell 18% as the pandemic-era bull market left valuations inflated, and growth in the tech sector slowed significantly as the economy fully reopened. What it means for investors There are no ironclad rules in stock investing, but looking back at history can help inform your understanding and decision-making in the current market. While the sample size above is limited, there is some indication that a surge in new all-time highs one year can lead to a pullback in the near term. While it's impossible to know how the stock market will perform in 2025, investors should be prepared for the current momentum to temper itself, given current valuations. However, a lot can change in a year, especially with a new administration taking control of the White House and ongoing developments in AI. There's another lesson here as well. Over a longer time horizon, the stock market has consistently climbed to fresh all-time highs, even after a bear market -- and often sooner than you might think. By 2019, the S&P 500 was back to a record, and this year's results show why buying in 2022 paid off as well. In other words, betting on the S&P 500 over the long term comes with volatility, but it's also a tried-and-true way to build wealth. That's worth remembering no matter what happens in the stock market next year.

Calgary’s saw over $140 million donated to more than 56,000 nonprofits across 122 countries and territories through its platform on Giving Tuesday this Dec. 3. The corporate social impact software firm 148,000 individuals and 637 companies participated this year, with St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, American Red Cross, Doctors Without Borders, and United Way Greater Toronto among the most popular causes. This 2024 total is down nearly seven percent relative to Benevity’s Giving Tuesday 2023, when the company reported that $150 million was donated to over 53,000 nonprofits via its platform. Last year marked Benevity’s third record Giving Tuesday in a row following some strong and results. At the same time, Benevity saw 21,000 individuals commit 260,000 in volunteer hours through its platform this Giving Tuesday—a 17 percent increase compared to 2023. In a statement, Benevity’s new CEO Christopher Maloof credited users for donating so much of their time and money amid economic uncertainty and an increasingly challenging social climate for companies. Founded in 2008, Benevity is a certified B Corp that offers a suite of community investment, employee, customer, and nonprofit engagement software solutions to a list of customers that includes Visa, Starbucks, and UPS. To date, Benevity claims to have processed more than $15 billion in total donations and 79 million hours of volunteering time for 470,000 nonprofits around the world. This year, Benevity has taken steps to build out and reshape its executive team. Maloof, an experienced software executive who previously led MeridianLink and worked with Thoma Bravo, of Benevity three months ago from former CEO Kelly Schmitt. Benevity said Schmitt chose to step down after six years with the company, during which she helped guide Benevity to profitability and a $1-billion valuation when United Kingdom-based Hg . Early last year, Benevity shed of its staff, citing lower than expected customer demand amid deteriorating macroeconomic conditions. In addition to bringing on Maloof, the company has made at least four other leadership changes in 2024. Last month, Benevity appointed Candace Worley as chief product officer, Cristine Kao as chief marketing officer, and James Carder as chief information and security officer. Ricardo Moreno also joined the company as chief revenue officer earlier this year. Canada Helps’ 2024 recently found that for the eleventh consecutive year, the number of Canadians making charitable donations has declined. At the same time, charity usage in Canada has reached an all-time high thanks to inflation and the high cost of living, leaving over half of charities unable to meet current demand, according to the report. Despite this continued decline and the slight drop Benevity saw in donations through its platform, Giving Tuesday 2024 overall may have set a new record: GivingTuesday Data Commons that a record-breaking $3.6 billion was donated in the United States alone on Dec. 3.jili casino slot

Special counsel moves to drop federal cases against TrumpNC A&T to Lead State Drone Training and ResearchLiving through the onset of rapid global warming involves learning to roll with the punches. Increasingly, those are quite real and painful—this year saw, again, an accelerating toll of flood and drought. But, even for climate scientists sequestered in the lab, life increasingly seems like a series of bewildering blows. As 2024 began, we'd just finished the most remarkable year in the planet's modern climate history—2023 had shattered every global record for temperature, with researchers firm in the conviction that our planet had seen its hottest average temperatures in at least a hundred and twenty-five thousand years. But, even as they watched the mercury soar, they weren't completely sure why: temperatures seemed to be rising even before an El Niño warming in the Pacific fully kicked in. In a remarkably candid essay this March in Nature, NASA's chief climatologist, Gavin Schmidt, said, "The 2023 temperature anomaly has come out of the blue, revealing an unprecedented knowledge gap perhaps for the first time since about 40 years ago, when satellite data began offering modellers an unparalleled, real-time view of Earth's climate system." If temperatures hadn't settled back to something more like a consistent rise by late summer 2024, he noted, that would imply "that a warming planet is already fundamentally altering how the climate system operates, much sooner than scientists had anticipated." 2024 in Review New Yorker writers reflect on the year's highs and lows. In the event, this August was the warmest August on record, and most of the other months of 2024 also broke records; it now seems certain that, when meteorological officials announce their results early in January, this will again have been the hottest year ever measured. Scientists still can't explain what's causing the spike, which sits atop the steady ramp in temperature over the past few decades. (BPT) - The holidays bring a whirlwind of excitement, sales, and unfortunately also scams. Black Friday, Small Business Saturday, and Cyber Week mean increased online transactions, e-commerce traffic, and a heightened focus on fulfilling customer orders — all of which make small businesses, especially micro-businesses, prime targets for cybercriminals. According to Bank of America's Small Business Owner's Report , more than half of small business owners said cybersecurity threats have impacted their business. Unlike larger corporations with dedicated IT departments, many small and micro businesses lack proper security infrastructure, leaving them more vulnerable to and harmed by threats. A series of campaign gaffes by the Taoiseach has seen support for Fine Gael slide dramatically in recent days. The Taoiseach’s party was down four per cent in one poll on Sunday and down an extraordinary six per cent in a separate poll today. The slide comes on the back of a series of headline grabbing incidents in Fine Gael’s election campaign. The first was Ryanair boss Michael O’Leary’s comments at a Fine Gael event where he said teachers were not the best people to deliver change — which sparked a furious reaction from Ireland’s educators. This was followed by controversy over the party’s decision to stand by election candidate John McGahon in Co Louth despite video footage and pictures emerging of injuries he caused to a man in a row outside a pub six years ago. The Fine Gael senator was found not guilty of assault in a criminal case but had to pay damages to the injured man following a civil case. Over the weekend, Fine Gael were hit with a further controversy when Harris had a difficult exchange with a care worker at a supermarket in Cork. Disability care worker Charlotte Fallon challenged the Taoiseach on the government’s support of Section 39 workers and was left visibly emotional after he told her it wasn’t true and walked away. A video of the exchange went viral on social media with Harris later phoning the care worker to apologise for his actions . Speaking on RTE’s Claire Byrne Show today, the Fine Gael leader issued another grovelling apology over the exchange and admitted that he got it wrong . He said: “I don’t want to get into making excuses because that takes from the point. “The point is I was wrong. When you’re wrong in politics and when you’re wrong in life I was always reared to own it, to put your hands up, to apologise, to do that immediately and then to seek to rectify it. “I did have a very good conversation with Charlotte and what Charlotte wanted to talk to me about was the pay to Section 39 workers — an issue that the government had agreed to make progress on a year ago. “There are meetings on this issue due to be held this week with unions which is important because we do need to resolve it. “And secondly she wanted to talk to me about the means’ test for carers which I’m absolutely committed to abolishing in the lifetime of the next government and significantly moving on that.” Pressed on the issue, he added: “I let myself down and I’m deeply annoyed with myself. There’s no one more annoyed with me than me and particularly on an issue that I feel incredibly passionate about. "I have been that teenager who has watched my own mother cry with frustration at being a mother of a child with special education needs. “I know what it is like to be in a family where you feel isolated, where you feel let down, where you fight for services on that issue I am so passionate about.” RTE today said the clip of the exchange with care worker Ms Fallon is the most viewed election video across their platforms with the Taoiseach asking people not to judge him on 40 seconds. TO run as a candidate in a general election and be in with a chance of being voted in as a TD you must meet a number of requirements. Candidates must be a citizen of Ireland and over 21 years of age - to run for a political party you must go through your party's political selection procedure. To run as an independent candidate you must present your nomination paper to the returning officer in the constituency you wish to run in. You can nominate yourself for election and you can run in multiple constituencies. You do not have to own property or live in the constituency you run in. To register, you must give the returning officer a certificate of party affiliation or statutory declarations signed by 30 constituents or a deposit of €500. All nomination papers must be submitted by midday on the seventh day after the Clerk of the Dail issues the writ for the General Election. In order to vote in a general election in Ireland you must meet multiple requirements. Voters must be 18 years or older, a resident in Ireland and registered to vote. Irish citizens can vote in general elections as can British citizens who live in Ireland and British citizens are recognised by the letter D on the Register. EU citizens cannot vote in General Elections in Ireland and neither can non-EU citizens. He said: “I don’t think fair people and decent people — and that’s what people right across this country are — will judge me on 40 seconds on a Friday evening. “I think they’ll judge me on my record. They’ll judge me on what I’m going to do over the next five years. What I want to do. "What Fine Gael wants to do and the plans that we’ve put forward to fix and rectify disability services. “It is something that I’ve prioritised since becoming Taoiseach.” The narrowing of the polls now means the three big parties are neck and neck, all close to 20 per cent in support. Sinn Fein leader Mary Lou McDonald now believes that it is “game on” for her party to win the election as she prepares to take on Micheal Martin and Harris in a crucial leader’s debate tonight. Ms McDonald said that tonight’s debate could be a defining moment in the election campaign. Speaking while visiting the Deaf Village in her home area of Cabra in Dublin , she said: “There is momentum now with us. "It’s now clear there can be a government beyond Fine Gael and Fianna Fail and for the first time we can have a government led by Sinn Fein.” She added: “I think the debate is important. I regret to say we’re only having one three-way debate. “I think there was scope for other three-way debates and Simon Harris refused an invitation from Sky and Today FM. “So tomorrow evening is vitally important. It gives us an opportunity to set out our stalls. “I look forward to challenging Micheal Martin and challenging Simon Harris on their records but more importantly setting out our stall and ambition to get the basic things right for people.” Speaking while campaigning in Dublin, Harris added: “Four days out from the General Election and it is very much all to play for.” “I let myself down and I’m deeply annoyed with myself. There’s no one more annoyed with me than me and particularly on an issue that I feel incredibly passionate about." Deputy Martin today batted away questions about his party being top of one of the opinion polls. Speaking on the campaign trail in Dublin’s Fingal West, the Tanaiste said: “We’re still all around 20 per cent give or take. “You can go up or down two per cent so I’m not getting in anyway excited about these polls. We would have always felt that the three parties of Fianna Fail, Fine Gael and Sinn Fein were about 20 per cent but the real poll is on Friday. “There is a degree of volatility there. There are a lot of votes to be won and there are a lot of issues on the doorsteps so it would be very foolish to read much into the two polls we had this weekend.”

President-elect Donald Trump Thursday in a post on Truth Social, “I greatly appreciate the recent efforts of Matt Gaetz in seeking approval to be Attorney General. He was doing very well but, at the same time, did not want to be a distraction for the Administration, for which he has much respect.” Gaetz began earlier in the week meeting with senators whose approval he would need in order to be confirmed as AG. “I enjoyed the time on the Hill, frankly, talking with senators, and we had great momentum,” he told Real America’s Voice host on Friday. “While our discussions were going well, I found myself having to do two jobs at one time,” he added. “I had a full-time job explaining to senators that maybe a tweet I sent about them was rash and not reflective of how I would serve as attorney general. “And at the same time, I was having to build out the Department of Justice with the right human talent, [and] the right policy infrastructure.” Gaetz recounted that Trump’s new pick to head the DOJ, former Florida Attorney General , will not have the same distractions. “It won’t take the same long process” to get her confirmed, the former congressman argued. Matt Gaetz is currently at Mar-a-Lago, helping build an “America First Army” to take over the DOJ. “You and I have been very involved at Mar-a-Lago at finding patriotic Americans who want to do incredible service, not for themselves, for the country, and putting them in a... — George (@BehizyTweets) Gaetz who led the effort to have former House Speaker removed in 2023 had created animosity on Capitol Hill toward himself. “I was dealing with a politically motivated body. They didn’t like me because of what I did to Kevin McCarthy,” Gaetz said, according to . “And they had an ax to grind. So that was going to serve as at least enough of a basis to delay my confirmation as attorney general.” The America First firebrand also revealed to Kirk that he will not be seeking to return to the House to serve in the next Congress in January. When Gaetz resigned his seat, it was from the current 118th Congress. “I’m still going to be in the fight, but it’s going to be from a new perch. I do not intend to join the 119th Congress,” he said. “There are a number of fantastic Floridians who stepped up to run for my seat, people who have inspired with their heroism, with their public service. And I’m actually excited to see Northwest Florida go to new heights and have great representation,” Gaetz added. JUST IN: Matt Gaetz tells Charlie Kirk that he does *not* intend on joining the 119th Congress, hints he has other plans “from a new perch.” The statement comes after Gaetz withdrew his name from the AG nomination. “I’m still going to be in the fight, but it’s going to be from... — Collin Rugg (@CollinRugg) “I’m 42 now, and I’ve got other goals in life that I’m eager to pursue — my wife and my family — and so I’m going to be fighting for President Trump,” he said. “I’m going to be doing whatever he asks of me, as I always have. But I think that eight years is probably enough time in the United States Congress.” Prior to his decision to resign, Gaetz had faced the prospect of having a report released. The panel had been investigating allegations that he paid a 17-year-old girl to have sex with him at a party in 2017. The DOJ had also investigated Gaetz for alleged sex trafficking allegations but in 2023 bringing no charges. He told Kirk the allegations were false and an attempt to smear him, reported. “[I]f the things that the House Ethics report [said] were true, I would be under indictment and probably in a prison cell,” Gaetz said. “But of course, they’re false, because when you test them against other records, when you test them against other testimony, it all falls apart very quickly.” We are committed to truth and accuracy in all of our journalism. By WYATTE GRANTHAM-PHILIPS NEW YORK (AP) — Sneaking a little ahead of line to get on that plane faster? American Airlines might stop you . In an apparent effort to reduce the headaches caused by airport line cutting, American has rolled out boarding technology that alerts gate agents with an audible sound if a passenger tries to scan a ticket ahead of their assigned group. This new software won’t accept a boarding pass before the group it’s assigned to is called, so customers who get to the gate prematurely will be asked to go back and wait their turn. As of Wednesday, the airline announced, the technology is now being used in more than 100 U.S. airports that American flies out of. The official expansion arrives after successful tests in three of these locations — Albuquerque International Sunport, Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport and Tucson International Airport. The initial response from customers and American employees “has exceeded our expectations,” Julie Rath, American’s senior vice president of airport operations, reservations and service recovery, said in a statement. She added that the airline is “thrilled” to have the technology up and running ahead of the Thanksgiving holiday . American got lots of attention when it unveiled its gate-control testing last month. Analysts say that isn’t surprising. It’s no secret that line cutting in airports hits a nerve. Whether intentional or not, just about every air traveler has witnessed it, noted Henry Harteveldt, an airline industry analyst with Atmosphere Research Group. It can add to frustrations in what can already be a tense environment, with particular anxiety around passengers wanting to sit together or rushing for some overhead bin space. Harteveldt doesn’t see American’s recent move as “shaming” customers who cut the line. “What it is intended to do is bring order out of chaos,” he said. “And I hope it will defuse any potential flare ups of anger (from) people who simply think they’re entitled to board out of turn .... It’s just not fair.” Harteveldt added that he thinks this change will enhance the experiences of both customers and gate agents. Others say more time will tell. Seth Miller, editor and founder of air travel experience analysis site PaxEx.aero, said he can see the benefits of more orderly and universal gate-control enforcement, particularly for airlines. But he said he isn’t “100% convinced this is perfect for passengers” just yet. Families, for example, might be booked on several different reservations across more than one group, he said. Airlines typically have workarounds for that, and American noted Wednesday that customers traveling with a companion in an earlier group can simply have a gate agent “override the alert” to continue boarding. Still, Miller said, “you have to go through the extra hoops.” And a difficult customer still might choose to hold up the line and argue when they’re not allowed to board, he added. Another question is whether customers who encounter a beep will walk away feeling embarrassed. But Harteveldt said he was happy to learn that American’s alert is “not a bellowing sound that can be heard throughout the terminal,” or accompanied by your name read over a loudspeaker, noting that this is important to avoid feelings of shame. Expanding this technology just a week before peak Thanksgiving travel could be “both good and bad,” Harteveldt adds. On one hand, the tech could help significantly improve the boarding process during such a busy time, he said, but airport employees might also have appreciated more time to prepare. Both Miller and Harteveldt said they wouldn’t be surprised if other carriers soon follow American’s lead. Headaches over airport line cutting are far from new. While maybe not to the extent of American’s new tech, Miller noted he’s seen gate agents from other airlines ask people to leave a line and wait for their group. Harteveldt added that he’s been to some airports in Asia and Europe with “sliding doors” that ensure passengers are in the right group before boarding a plane. The more than 100 airports that American is now using its gate-control technology in are all spoke, or non-hub, locations — including Austin-Bergstrom International Airport and Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. The airline says it expects to further expand to its hubs and other airports in the coming months.

Leading that company, which is at the forefront of clean energy solutions, Giraldo is driving Colombia's transition towards a more sustainable energy matrix, with a focus on expanding solar and wind energy adoption. "Miss. Giraldo's innovative vision and leadership with incorporating solar panels and other green energy features in rural and remote parts of Colombia have been instrumental in positioning that country as a significant player in the global movement towards energy sustainability," says Claudia Minoletti, Colombia's Minister of Mining and Energy Giraldo is also a frequent speaker at top conferences and serving as legal counsel to the Colombian government on the issue of renewable energy. Giraldo's influence is making impacts in the US as this year's presidential election discuses energy independence, a major talking point among the candidates. Many have emphasized the urgency of diversifying Colombia's energy sources and reducing its reliance on fossil fuels. Proposals include accelerating the transition to renewable energy, strengthening infrastructure for clean energy, and encouraging private investment in the sector. Giraldo, with her extensive experience and leadership acumen, is well-placed to play a decisive role in this transformation, leading initiatives that promote both sustainability and economic growth through renewable energy solutions. As head of Energia y Gas de Colombia, Giraldo has focused on developing sustainable projects aimed at not only generating clean energy but also ensuring equitable access to energy across the country. Under her leadership, the company has expanded its portfolio of renewable energy projects, harnessing Colombia's vast potential to become a regional leader in clean energy generation. Giraldo will be in Miami advising Disney sports with its solar panel conversion project. Trump, 78, was accused of conspiring to overturn the results of the 2020 election he lost to Joe Biden and mishandling classified documents after leaving the White House, but neither case ever came to trial. Smith, in a filing with the district judge in Washington presiding over the election case, said it should be dropped in light of the long-standing Justice Department policy of not indicting or prosecuting a sitting president. He cited the same reasoning in withdrawing his appeal of a ruling by a district judge, a Trump appointee, who dismissed the classified documents case earlier this year. Smith asked District Judge Tanya Chutkan to dismiss the election interference case "without prejudice" -- leaving open the possibility it could be revived after Trump leaves office four years from now. The special counsel paused the election interference case this month after Trump defeated Vice President Kamala Harris in the November 5 presidential election. "The Government's position on the merits of the defendant's prosecution has not changed," Smith said in the filing with Chutkan. "But the circumstances have." "It has long been the position of the Department of Justice that the United States Constitution forbids the federal indictment and subsequent criminal prosecution of a sitting President," Smith said. "As a result this prosecution must be dismissed before the defendant is inaugurated." In a separate filing, Smith said he was withdrawing his appeal of the dismissal of the classified documents case against Trump but pursuing the case against his two co-defendants, Trump valet Walt Nauta and Mar-a-Lago property manager Carlos De Oliveira. Trump, in a post on Truth Social, said the cases were "empty and lawless, and should never have been brought." "Over $100 Million Dollars of Taxpayer Dollars has been wasted in the Democrat Party's fight against their Political Opponent, ME," he said. "Nothing like this has ever happened in our Country before." Trump is accused of conspiracy to defraud the United States and conspiracy to obstruct an official proceeding -- the session of Congress called to certify Biden's win, which was violently attacked on January 6, 2021 by a mob of the then-president's supporters. Trump is also accused of seeking to disenfranchise US voters with his false claims that he won the 2020 election. The former and incoming president also faces two state cases -- in New York and Georgia. He was convicted in New York in May of 34 counts of falsifying business records to cover up a hush money payment to porn star Stormy Daniels on the eve of the 2016 election to stop her from revealing an alleged 2006 sexual encounter. Judge Juan Merchan has postponed sentencing while he considers a request from Trump's lawyers that the conviction be thrown out in light of the Supreme Court ruling in July that an ex-president has broad immunity from prosecution. In Georgia, Trump faces racketeering charges over his efforts to subvert the 2020 election results in the southern state, but that case will likely be frozen while he is in office. cl/bgs

OPINION Sablan: ATMs — What would we do without themThe first guest invited to ring the bell to open trading at the New York Stock Exchange in 1956 wasn’t a company executive, a politician or a well-known celebrity. It was a 10-year-old boy, Leonard Ross, who received the honor by winning a television quiz show. Since then, business titans, political giants and global film stars have all been among those ringing the opening bell at the NYSE. Ronald Reagan rang the bell as president in 1985. Billionaire businessman and former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Hollywood star Robert Downey Jr. have also rung the bell. The list even includes famous Muppets: Miss Piggy was once a bell ringer. President-elect Donald Trump joined that list Thursday when he opened trading at the famous stock exchange on Wall Street. He was accompanied by his wife, Melania, who interestingly enough received the honor before her husband. As first lady, she rang the bell in 2019 as part of her “Be Best” program. Bell-ringers are more commonly founders and executives from a wide range of companies. Over the last few months, the guests have included executives from Alaska Air Group, Bath & Body Works, and Ally Financial. Stock trading around the location of the NYSE's current home has deep roots that trace back to the Dutch founding of New Amsterdam and when Wall Street had an actual wall. The NYSE traces its direct roots to the “Buttonwood Agreement” signed in 1792, which set rules for stock trading and commissions. The NYSE moved into its first permanent home in 1865. The first bell in use was actually a gong. The exchange moved into its current iconic building in 1903 and started using an electronically operated brass bell. That has evolved into synchronized bells in each of the NYSE’s four trading areas.

Shares of Ciena Corp. were up over 15% in midday trade on Wednesday despite the company’s missing fourth-quarter earnings estimates. If these gains hold, the stock will hit its highest level since Feb. 2002. The day marked significant volatility for the stock, with the shares initially dipping in pre-market trading due to the earnings miss but rebounding over 23% thereafter following management’s upbeat guidance during the earnings call. Ciena’s revenue was largely in-line with expectations of $1.1 billion, compared to the expected $1.1 billion. However, the optical networking equipment maker reported earnings of $0.54 per share, missing Wall Street’s expectation of $0.65. Gross margins also slid to 40.9% from 43.1% year-over-year. "Our Q4 revenue and strong order flow reflect our significant and increasing technology leadership and positive industry dynamics," said Cienna CEO Gary Smith. "As Cloud and AI drive bandwidth demand across the network, we are positioned for accelerated revenue growth and market share expansion moving forward," he added. For its first fiscal quarter, the company expects revenue of $1.01 billion to $1.9 billion. Ciena also forecast average annual revenue growth of about 8% to 11% over the next three years during its earnings call. Retail sentiment around the stock has improved to ‘bullish’ from ‘neutral’ three months ago, with its shares gaining 56% during the same period. Sentiment is being dragged down by some users who continue to be bearish on the company’s earnings miss, citing that upbeat guidance doesn’t promise better financial performance. The debate between the two sides has led to retail chatter around the stock, which hit an annual peak of 96 at ‘extremely high’ levels. The stock is on pace for largest percent increase since Jun. 6, 2019, when it rose 26.78%, according to Dow Jones Newswire. So far this year, Ciena’s shares have surged by over 85%. It’s the latest red-flag-to-a-bull by the Space X founder, who has been coming for Sir Keir since he became PM. Showing support for the petition at the one million signature mark, Musk, owner of X, took to his social media platform to slag off the PM to his 206 million followers. Musk called the UK a “tyrannical police state” when the petition clocked a million signatures, and said that “the people of Britain have had enough”. Barrott was in charge when the Gunners’ beat Leicester City 4-2 earlier in the season. After the match, he was criticised for his decision to not award a free-kick after Jamie Vardy was allegedly fouled in the build-up to Arsenal’s opener. Barrott also opted not to send Riccardo Calafiori off for what appeared to be a stonewall second yellow card. This led to Barrott being dropped for the next round of fixtures. But he has since been reinstated. Check out our roundup of all of the best Black Friday dealsNorth America’s top professional sports leagues have issued warnings to their players about a growing threat from high-tech, organized burglary rings, whose tools of choice are passports, cutting-edge technology and a 90-day calendar. The NBA memo, citing FBI intelligence, specifically linked the crimes to “transnational South American Theft Groups” that target “professional athletes and other high-net-worth individuals.” These groups are known for using “advanced techniques” such as pre-surveillance, drones, signal-jamming devices and other cutting-edge technology. The NFL highlighted the risks posed by what it called “organized and skilled groups” of burglars targeting wealthy athletes. While the warnings did not name victims, they were issued after the homes of athletes including Kansas City Chiefs stars Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce and Milwaukee Bucks forward Bobby Portis were recently burglarized. The tactics described in the memos bear a striking resemblance to a wave of break-ins targeting affluent residents in Southern California . Federal and local officials from Los Angeles and Orange County have reported a spike in break-ins by what they call “burglary tourists” — criminals from Central and South America who legally enter the U.S. on 90-day tourist visas under the Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA). But instead of packing swimsuits and sunscreen, police said these individuals are armed with disguises, video equipment, trail cameras and Wi-Fi jammers. They target wealthy neighborhoods and gated communities before moving on to avoid detection. These “burglary tourists” have been at work for at least five years, but their operations have intensified in recent times as information about addresses and even pictures of properties have become increasingly accessible. “Transnational gangs might not know everything about the house that they are breaking into,” LAPD Chief of Detectives Alan Hamilton told NBC News on Friday. “But there’s always a possibility these suspects know who they are and monitor the athletes’ social media and movements.” Minnesota Timberwolves guard Mike Conley’s home was also burglarized in September while he was attending an NFL game, The Minnesota Star Tribune reported . Portis posted on Instagram on Nov. 3 saying his “prized possessions” were stolen from his home during his team’s game the previous day. Kelce’s and Mahomes’ homes in Kansas City were broken into hours apart in October. The burglars made off with $20,000 in cash and caused $1,000 in damage to Kelce’s home, according to a police report obtained by NBC affiliate KSHB of Kansas City . Mahomes has called the ordeal “frustrating” and “disappointing.” This trend has spread to other cities including Chicago, Houston and Dallas. “Law enforcement has long recognized this pattern of crimes across the Midwest,” Hamilton said. “It’s not something they have been immune to.” Law enforcement from coast to coast, including the FBI, has been tracking these criminal networks for years, with suspects linked to South American gangs appearing in nearly every state, Hamilton said. “It’s totally military”-level technology, Orange County District Attorney Todd Spitzer told NBC News over the summer. “People we’ve arrested here in Orange County have criminal records coming from the country of Chile.” If Southern California law enforcement has made progress in reducing these crimes, it may be driving more of these operations to other regions of the country. The NBA and NFL urged players to take preventive measures, such as activating alarm systems and surveillance cameras, securing valuables in safes and avoid oversharing on social media. “The FBI reported that, in most of the incidents, the homes were equipped with alarm systems that were not activated,” reads the NBA memo obtained by NBC News on Friday. “The FBI also reported that the homes were all unoccupied and, in most cases, no dogs were present.” This story first appeared on NBCNews.com. Pennsylvania Sen.-elect Dave McCormick speaks to 'The Ingraham Angle' after Sen. Bob Casey conceded the election. Pennsylvania Democrat Sen. Bob Casey on Thursday announced he has conceded the race to Republican candidate Dave McCormick more than two weeks after Election Day . Casey said in a statement that he called McCormick to congratulate him. McCormick's campaign also independently confirmed the news to Fox News Digital. "I just called Dave McCormick to congratulate him on his election to represent Pennsylvania in the United States Senate," Casey said in the statement. "As the first count of ballots is completed, Pennsylvanians can move forward with the knowledge that their voices were heard, whether their vote was the first to be counted or the last." "This race was one of the closest in our Commonwealth’s history, decided by less than a quarter of a point. I am grateful to the thousands of people who worked to make sure every eligible vote cast could be counted, including election officials in all 67 counties." RNC FILES TWO LAWSUITS IN PENNSYLVANIA AMID SEN BOB CASEY REFUSING TO CONCEDE RACE McCormick believes Pennsylvania voters are realizing the importance of the 2024 election. (Reuters/ Associated Press) The Pennsylvania State Department confirmed that all counties "have completed their initial count of all votes cast, with the exception of ballots under challenge." "This is a major step that marks the end of counties’ initial counting processes and signals that counties begin preparing their results for official certification. Thousands of election professionals have been working tirelessly since Nov. 5 to ensure every eligible vote cast by a registered voter is counted accurately. All of Pennsylvania’s election officials deserve our thanks, as well as our continued support while they complete their duties with integrity," the message said. The news comes after McCormick edged out Casey by just 17,000 votes to win the Senate seat, according to the most recent unofficial data from the Department of State – putting Casey well within the 0.5% margin of error required under Pennsylvania law to trigger an automatic recount. That recount began Monday and was slated to end Nov. 26. The Republican Party blasted Democrats this week for Casey's refusal to concede the U.S. Senate race in Pennsylvania, taking aim at the three-term incumbent for moving ahead with a costly recount effort, despite their assessment that Casey lacked any achievable path to victory. They have also criticized the cost, noting that the recount will cost taxpayers an estimated $1 million. In his statement Thursday, Casey praised the democratic process and voters who turned out in the Keystone State. "When a Pennsylvanian takes the time to cast a legal vote, often waiting in long lines and taking time away from their work and family, they deserve to know that their vote will count," Casey said. "That’s democracy." Later Thursday, Casey took to X to thank his supporters. "During my time in office, I have been guided by an inscription on the Finance Building in Harrisburg: ‘All public service is a trust, given in faith and accepted in honor.’" He added: "Thank you for your trust in me all these years, Pennsylvania. It has been the honor of my lifetime." CLICK HERE TO GET THE FOX NEWS APP Sen. John Fetterman, D-Pa., said the news "hits me." "It’s been a supreme honor to have Bob Casey as a colleague, friend, and mentor," Fetterman said in a statement. "His legacy is a better Pennsylvania. Unassuming while delivering for PA for nearly two decades, he fought for working Pennsylvanians and unions, rural communities, seniors and people with disabilities—all of us. Bob Casey was, is, and always will be Pennsylvania’s best senator." EDITOR'S NOTE: This report has been updated to clarify that the Pennsylvania secretary of state had not announced the end of the recount as of Friday morning. It often seems like he's daring Congress to oppose his decisions. But on Thursday, Trump's attempt to act with impunity showed a crack as Matt Gaetz , his choice for attorney general, withdrew from consideration. Trump had named Gaetz, a Florida congressman, to be the country's top law enforcement official even though he was widely disliked by his colleagues, has little legal experience and was accused of having sex with an underage girl, an allegation he denied. After being plagued by investigations during his first presidency, Trump wanted a devoted ally in charge of the Justice Department during his second. However, it was never obvious that Gaetz could win enough support from lawmakers to get confirmed as attorney general. Trump chose for a replacement Pam Bondi, a former Florida attorney general who defended him during his first impeachment trial and supported his false claims of voter fraud. Now the question is whether Gaetz was uniquely unpalatable, or if Trump's other picks might exceed his party's willingness to overlook concerns that would have sunk nominees in a prior political era. The next test will likely be Pete Hegseth, who Trump wants to lead the Pentagon despite an allegation of sexual assault that he's denied. So far, Republicans are rallying around Hegseth , an Army veteran and former Fox News host. Sen. Thom Tillis, a North Carolina Republican who serves on the Senate Judiciary Committee, said the controversy over Gaetz would have little bearing on Trump’s other choices. He said they would be considered “one at a time.” Sen. Richard Blumenthal, a Connecticut Democrat, suggested otherwise, claiming “the dominoes are falling.” “The drip drip of evidence and truth is going to eventually doom some others,” he said. Trump's election victory was a sign that there may not be many red lines left in American politics. He won the presidential race despite authoritarian, racist and misogynist rhetoric, not to mention years of lies about election fraud and his role in sparking the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol. He was also criminally convicted of falsifying business records to pay hush money, and he was found liable for sexual abuse in a civil case. Empowered by voters who looked past his misconduct and saw him as a powerful agent of change, Trump has shown no deference to Washington norms while working to fill his second administration . The transition team hasn't pursued federal background checks for Trump's personnel choices. While some of his selections have extensive experience in the areas they've been chosen to lead, others are personal friends and Fox News personalities who have impressed and flattered Trump over the years. Several have faced allegations involving sexual misconduct . Hegseth is facing the most scrutiny after Gaetz. Once Trump announced Hegseth as his nominee for Pentagon chief, allegations emerged that he sexually assaulted a woman in California in 2017. The woman said he took her phone, blocked the door to the hotel room and refused to let her leave, according to a police report made public this week. Hegseth told police at the time that the encounter had been consensual and denied any wrongdoing, the report said. However, he paid the woman a confidential settlement in 2023. Hegseth's lawyer said the payment was made to head off the threat of a baseless lawsuit. Trump’s choice for secretary of health and human Services, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., has faced allegations of misconduct too. A woman who babysat for him and his second wife told Vanity Fair magazine that Kennedy groped her in the late 1990s, when she was 23. Kennedy did not deny the allegation and texted an apology to the woman after the article was published. That isn't the only hurdle for Kennedy; he's spent years spreading misinformation and conspiracy theories about vaccines, raising fears about making him a top health official in the new administration. Linda McMahon, chosen by Trump to be education secretary, is fighting a lawsuit connected to her former company, World Wrestling Entertainment. She’s accused of knowingly enabling sexual exploitation of children by an employee as early as the 1980s, and she denies the allegations. Tulsi Gabbard is another person who could face a difficult confirmation battle, but for very different reasons. The former Democratic representative from Hawaii has been a vocal Trump ally, and he chose her to be national intelligence director. But there's grave concern by lawmakers and national security officials over Gabbard’s history of echoing Russian propaganda. Critics said she would endanger relationships with U.S. allies. Gaetz was investigated by federal law enforcement for sex trafficking, but the case was closed without charges and Republicans have blocked the release of a related report from the House Ethics Committee. However, some allegations leaked out, including that Gaetz paid women for sex. One of the women testified to the committee that she saw Gaetz having sex with a 17-year-old girl, according to a lawyer for the woman. As Gaetz met with senators this week, it became clear that he would face stubborn resistance from lawmakers who were concerned about his behavior and believed he was unqualified to run the Justice Department. “While the momentum was strong, it is clear that my confirmation was unfairly becoming a distraction,” Gaetz wrote on social media when announcing his withdrawal. Sen. Mike Braun, an Indiana Republican, said he believed there were four to six members of the caucus who would have voted against Gaetz, likely dooming his nomination, and “the math got too hard.” He said some of the issues and allegations around Gaetz were “maybe beyond the pale." “I think there were just too many things, it was like a leaky dike, and you know, it broke," Braun said. Trump thanked Gaetz in a post on Truth Social, his social media website, without addressing the substance of the allegations against him. “He was doing very well but, at the same time, did not want to be a distraction for the Administration, for which he has much respect,” Trump wrote. Associated Press writers Mary Clare Jalonick, Stephen Groves and Lisa Macaro contributed from Washington. Jill Colvin in New York and Adriana Gomez Licon in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, also contributed.

His usually stoic expression gave way to tears and a bittersweet smile as he turned to his precious six-year-old daughter, Lily, who was playing with her dolls nearby. Five schools forfeited matches in the regular season against San Jose State, which carried a No. 2 seed into the conference tournament in Las Vegas. Among those schools: No. 3 Utah State and No. 6 Boise State, who will face off Wednesday with the winner scheduled to play the Spartans in the semifinals on Friday. Wyoming, Nevada and Southern Utah — which is not a Mountain West member — also canceled regular-season matches, all without explicitly saying why they were forfeiting. Nevada players cited fairness in women’s sports as a reason to boycott their match, while political figures from Wyoming, Idaho, Utah and Nevada suggested the cancellations center around protecting women’s sports. In a lawsuit filed against the NCAA , plaintiffs cited unspecified reports asserting there was a transgender player on the San Jose State volleyball team, even naming her. While some media have reported those and other details, neither San Jose State nor the forfeiting teams have confirmed the school has a trans women’s volleyball player. The Associated Press is withholding the player’s name because she has not publicly commented on her gender identity and through school officials has declined an interview request. A judge on Monday rejected a request made by nine current conference players to block the San Jose State player from competing in the tournament on grounds that she is transgender. That ruling was upheld Tuesday by an appeals court. “The team looks forward to starting Mountain West Conference tournament competition on Friday,” San Jose State said in a statement issued after the appeals court decision. “The university maintains an unwavering commitment to the participation, safety and privacy of all students at San Jose State and ensuring they are able to compete in an inclusive, fair and respectful environment.” Chris Kutz, a Boise State athletics spokesman, said in an email the university would not “comment on potential matchups at this time.” Doug Hoffman, an Aggies athletics spokesman, said in an email Utah State is reviewing the court’s order. “Right now, our women’s volleyball program is focused on the game this Wednesday, and we’ll be cheering them on,” Hoffman wrote. San Jose State, which had a first-round bye, would be sent directly to the conference title game if Utah State or Boise State were to forfeit again. If the Spartans make the title game, it's likely the opponent would not forfeit. They would face top-seeded Colorado State, No. 4 Fresno State or No. 5 San Diego State — all teams that played the Spartans this season. The conference champion receives an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. AP college sports: https://apnews.com/hub/college-sports

No. 22 Xavier aims to keep its perfect record intact Monday night in Fort Myers, Fla., when it takes on South Carolina in the Fort Myers Tip-Off. The Musketeers (5-0) are coming off an 80-55 victory on Wednesday over Siena, while the Gamecocks (3-2) beat Mercer on Thursday 84-72. Against Mercer, South Carolina sank a season-best 12 3-pointers -- tied for the fourth-most in a single game under third-year coach Lamont Paris. Jamarii Thomas, a senior transfer from Norfolk State, had 19 points and swished 4 of 5 shots from behind the arc. "Thomas got some good, clean looks," Paris said. "It was good to see those guys make their shots. Hopefully it gets those guys going in the right direction." On the season, the Gamecocks are making 7.8 3-pointers per game and shooting 32.5 percent from deep. Senior guard Jacobi Wright makes a team-best 1.8 3-pointers per game and shoots 37.5 percent from behind the arc. At 13.0 ppg, he is second on the team behind Collin Murray-Boyles (15.8). Xavier is allowing eight makes from deep per game and is letting opponents shoot 38.5 percent from behind the arc, which ranks 337th in the country. And despite an undefeated record so far for the Musketeers, third-year coach Sean Miller is worried about his players developing bad habits. "We have a virus that everybody is looking at the stat sheet, trying to get as many points as they possibly can," Miller said after the win over Siena. "They want to win, but they really want to win and score. We need a couple of guys that are willing to rebound, defend, make the extra pass, play at a high level defensively and understand what makes a team great." Marcus Foster did a decent job of doing a little bit of everything for Xavier against Siena, piling up 12 points, five rebounds, five assists and a steal. It was the first double-digit scoring outing for Foster -- a grad transfer from Furman -- in a Xavier uniform. Since 2008, Xavier is 25-11 against teams from the Southeastern Conference, but it hasn't played South Carolina in that stretch. --Field Level MediaMercy Drives Conversation on AI Use in Health Care at 'CHAI on the Hill'

Flag football uses talent camps to uncover new starsWhat Did Taylor Swift & Travis Kelce Gift Chris Jones on Christmas?LAS VEGAS — Formula 1 on Monday at last said it will expand its grid in 2026 to make room for an American team that is partnered with General Motors. "As the pinnacle of motorsports, F1 demands boundary-pushing innovation and excellence. It's an honor for General Motors and Cadillac to join the world's premier racing series, and we're committed to competing with passion and integrity to elevate the sport for race fans around the world," GM President Mark Reuss said. "This is a global stage for us to demonstrate GM's engineering expertise and technology leadership at an entirely new level." The approval ends years of wrangling that launched a U.S. Justice Department investigation into why Colorado-based Liberty Media, the commercial rights holder of F1, would not approve the team initially started by Michael Andretti. Andretti in September stepped aside from leading his namesake organization, so the 11th team will be called Cadillac F1 and be run by new Andretti Global majority owners Dan Towriss and Mark Walter. The team will use Ferrari engines its first two years until GM has a Cadillac engine built for competition in time for the 2028 season. Towriss is the the CEO and president of Group 1001 and entered motorsports via Andretti's IndyCar team when he signed on financial savings platform Gainbridge as a sponsor. Towriss is now a major part of the motorsports scene with ownership stakes in both Spire Motorsports' NASCAR team and Wayne Taylor Racing's sports car team. Walter is the chief executive of financial services firm Guggenheim Partners and the controlling owner of both the World Series champion Los Angeles Dodgers and Premier League club Chelsea. "We're excited to partner with General Motors in bringing a dynamic presence to Formula 1," Towriss said. "Together, we're assembling a world-class team that will embody American innovation and deliver unforgettable moments to race fans around the world." Mario Andretti, the 1978 F1 world champion, will have an ambassador role with Cadillac F1. But his son, Michael, will have no official position with the organization now that he has scaled back his involvement with Andretti Global. "The Cadillac F1 Team is made up of a strong group of people that have worked tirelessly to build an American works team," Michael Andretti posted on social media. "I'm very proud of the hard work they have put in and congratulate all involved on this momentous next step. I will be cheering for you!" The approval has been in works for weeks but was held until after last weekend's Las Vegas Grand Prix to not overshadow the showcase event of the Liberty Media portfolio. Max Verstappen won his fourth consecutive championship in Saturday night's race, the third and final stop in the United States for the top motorsports series in the world. Grid expansion in F1 is both infrequent and often unsuccessful. Four teams were granted entries in 2010 that should have pushed the grid to 13 teams and 26 cars for the first time since 1995. One team never made it to the grid and the other three had vanished by 2017. There is only one American team on the current F1 grid — owned by California businessman Gene Haas — but it is not particularly competitive and does not field American drivers. Andretti's dream was to field a truly American team with American drivers. The fight to add this team has been going on for three-plus years, and F1 initially denied the application despite approval from F1 sanctioning body FIA. The existing 10 teams, who have no voice in the matter, also largely opposed expansion because of the dilution in prize money and the billions of dollars they've already invested in the series. Andretti in 2020 tried and failed to buy the existing Sauber team. From there, he applied for grid expansion and partnered with GM, the top-selling manufacturer in the United States. The inclusion of GM was championed by the FIA and president Mohammed Ben Sulayem, who said Michael Andretti's application was the only one of seven applicants to meet all required criteria to expand F1's current grid. "General Motors is a huge global brand and powerhouse in the OEM world and is working with impressive partners," Ben Sulayem said Monday. "I am fully supportive of the efforts made by the FIA, Formula 1, GM and the team to maintain dialogue and work towards this outcome of an agreement in principle to progress this application." Despite the FIA's acceptance of Andretti and General Motors from the start, F1 wasn't interested in Andretti — but did want GM. At one point, F1 asked GM to find another team to partner with besides Andretti. GM refused and F1 said it would revisit the Andretti application if and when Cadillac had an engine ready to compete. "Formula 1 has maintained a dialogue with General Motors, and its partners at TWG Global, regarding the viability of an entry following the commercial assessment and decision made by Formula 1 in January 2024," F1 said in a statement. "Over the course of this year, they have achieved operational milestones and made clear their commitment to brand the 11th team GM/Cadillac, and that GM will enter as an engine supplier at a later time. Formula 1 is therefore pleased to move forward with this application process." Yet another major shift in the debate over grid expansion occurred earlier this month with the announced resignation of Liberty Media CEO Greg Maffei, who was largely believed to be one of the biggest opponents of the Andretti entry. "With Formula 1's continued growth plans in the US, we have always believed that welcoming an impressive US brand like GM/Cadillac to the grid and GM as a future power unit supplier could bring additional value and interest to the sport," Maffei said. "We credit the leadership of General Motors and their partners with significant progress in their readiness to enter Formula 1." Teacher in space still inspiresLAS VEGAS — Formula 1 on Monday at last said it will expand its grid in 2026 to make room for an American team that is partnered with General Motors. Formula 1 is therefore pleased to move forward with this application process." President-elect Donald Trump’s repeated support for TikTok has sparked speculation about potential solutions to prevent the app’s impending ban in the United States, though the path forward remains unclear. “We got to keep this sucker around for a little while,” Trump told supporters on Sunday, just days after meeting with TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew in Florida. Trump, who credits the wildly popular platform with delivering him a large young user base, opposes banning TikTok partly because he believes it would primarily benefit Meta, the Mark Zuckerberg-led company behind Instagram and Facebook. The situation is complex, according to University of Richmond School of Law professor Carl Tobias, given the various potential solutions and Trump’s unpredictable nature. Congress overwhelmingly passed legislation, signed by President Joe Biden in April, that would block TikTok from US app stores and web hosting services unless Beijing-based ByteDance sells its stake by January 19. US officials and lawmakers grew wary of the potential for the Chinese government to influence ByteDance or access the data of TikTok’s American users. President-elect Donald Trump once argued for a US ban on TikTok, but has recently expressed support for the popular video sharing platform – Copyright AFP JOSH EDELSON Even with Trump’s decisive election victory and incoming Republican-led Congress, acquiescing to the president-elect’s desire and preventing the ban faces significant hurdles. The law enjoyed rare bipartisan support in a divided Washington, making its outright repeal through a vote in Congress politically unlikely even with Trump’s influence over Republicans. The Supreme Court may offer the clearest path forward. TikTok has appealed to the nation’s highest court, arguing the law violates First Amendment rights to free speech. The court, which is dominated by Trump-aligned conservatives, will hear the case on January 10, just nine days before the ban takes effect. This follows a lower appeals court’s unanimous decision to uphold the law in December. Another possibility, according to Tobias, is that a Trump-led Department of Justice could determine ByteDance has addressed the law’s national security concerns. However, such a move would likely be seen as caving to China by Congress and others. The final option is ByteDance selling to a non-Chinese buyer, though the company has consistently refused this possibility. With 170 million monthly active users, acquiring TikTok’s US operations would require substantial resources. As president, Trump could extend the ban deadline by 90 days to facilitate a transaction. – ‘Deal of the Century’ – Few potential buyers have emerged, with major tech companies likely deterred by antitrust concerns. Former Trump Treasury secretary Steve Mnuchin, who runs a private equity fund backed by Japan’s SoftBank Group and Abu Dhabi’s Mubadala sovereign wealth fund, has expressed interest. During a recent event with Trump, SoftBank CEO Masayoshi Son pledged to invest $100 billion in the US economy, though specific investments weren’t detailed. Other contenders include US real estate billionaire Frank McCourt, who aims to make social media safer through his Project Liberty organization. Elon Musk, given his proximity to Trump and ownership of X, could also have a role to play, as he has expressed plans to transform the text-focused platform into something more like TikTok. A senior Republican lawmaker recently suggested Trump might orchestrate a “deal of the century” satisfying both US concerns and ByteDance’s interests. The chairman of the US House committee on China, John Moolenaar, told Fox News Digital that once ByteDance accepts it must comply with US law, the situation could progress rapidly. Any agreement would need Beijing’s approval, with US-China relations expected to remain tense during Trump’s upcoming term. This isn’t the first attempt to resolve TikTok’s US status. In 2020, Trump also threatened a ban unless ByteDance sold its US operations. While Oracle and Walmart reached a preliminary agreement with ByteDance for ownership stakes, legal challenges and the transition to the Biden administration prevented the deal’s completion. MAKE IT STOP Amid the busiest shopping season of the year, some shoppers are also blasting Target for its security measures, claiming they're only resulting in longer wait times . Someone recently claimed their trip took over 50 minutes after waiting to get items locked behind glass cabinets. The locked glass cabinets around some merchandise at Target have been seen for over a year at select locations due to rampant retail theft. Target even had to close down nine stores in 2023 due to theft rates. Locked cabinets are coming under fire from Target customers almost as equally as self-checkout, especially after the retail giant implemented a 10-item limit earlier this spring. Read More on The US Sun As a result, a shopper fumed this month that they waited 22 minutes at the kiosks after "going to 4 stores." Another said they were even "forced" into the self-checkout area but were left "unable" to pay for a crucial reason.
