panalo999 NEW YORK (AP) — President-elect Donald Trump’s lawyers formally asked a judge Monday to throw out his hush money criminal conviction , arguing continuing the case would present unconstitutional “disruptions to the institution of the Presidency.“ In a filing made public Tuesday, Trump’s lawyers told Manhattan Judge Juan M. Merchan that dismissal is warranted because of the “overwhelming national mandate granted to him by the American people on November 5, 2024.” They also cited President Joe Biden’s recent pardon of his son, Hunter Biden, who had been convicted of tax and gun charges . “President Biden asserted that his son was ‘selectively, and unfairly, prosecuted,’ and ‘treated differently,’" Trump’s legal team wrote. The Manhattan district attorney, they claimed, had engaged in the type of political theater "that President Biden condemned.” Prosecutors will have until Dec. 9 to respond. They have said they will fight any efforts to dismiss the case but have indicated a willingness to delay the sentencing until after Trump’s second term ends in 2029. In their filing Monday, Trump's attorneys dismissed the idea of holding off sentencing until Trump is out of office as a “ridiculous suggestion.” Following Trump’s election victory last month, Merchan halted proceedings and indefinitely postponed his sentencing, previously scheduled for late November, to allow the defense and prosecution to weigh in on the future of the case. He also delayed a decision on Trump’s prior bid to dismiss the case on immunity grounds. Trump has been fighting for months to reverse his conviction on 34 counts of falsifying business records to conceal a $130,000 payment to porn actor Stormy Daniels to suppress her claim that they had sex a decade earlier. He says they did not and denies any wrongdoing. Taking a swipe at Bragg and New York City, as Trump often did throughout the trial, the filing argues that dismissal would also benefit the public by giving him and “the numerous prosecutors assigned to this case a renewed opportunity to put an end to deteriorating conditions in the City and to protect its residents from violent crime.” Clearing Trump, the lawyers added, would also allow him to “to devote all of his energy to protecting the Nation.” The defense filing was signed by Trump lawyers Todd Blanche and Emil Bove, who represented Trump during the trial and have since been selected by the president-elect to fill senior roles at the Justice Department. A dismissal would erase Trump’s historic conviction, sparing him the cloud of a criminal record and possible prison sentence. Trump is the first former president to be convicted of a crime and the first convicted criminal to be elected to the office. Trump takes office on Jan. 20. Merchan hasn’t set a timetable for a decision. Merchan could also decide to uphold the verdict and proceed to sentencing, delay the case until Trump leaves office, wait until a federal appeals court rules on Trump’s parallel effort to get the case moved out of state court or choose some other option. Prosecutors had cast the payout as part of a Trump-driven effort to keep voters from hearing salacious stories about him. Trump’s then-lawyer Michael Cohen paid Daniels. Trump later reimbursed him, and Trump’s company logged the reimbursements as legal expenses — concealing what they really were, prosecutors alleged. Trump has pledged to appeal the verdict if the case is not dismissed. He and his lawyers said the payments to Cohen were properly categorized as legal expenses for legal work. A month after the verdict, the Supreme Court ruled that ex-presidents can’t be prosecuted for official acts — things they did in the course of running the country — and that prosecutors can’t cite those actions to bolster a case centered on purely personal, unofficial conduct. Trump’s lawyers cited the ruling to argue that the hush money jury got some improper evidence, such as Trump’s presidential financial disclosure form, testimony from some White House aides and social media posts made during his first term. Prosecutors disagreed and said the evidence in question was only “a sliver” of their case. If the verdict stands and the case proceeds to sentencing, Trump’s punishments would range from a fine to probation to up to four years in prison — but it’s unlikely he’d spend any time behind bars for a first-time conviction involving charges in the lowest tier of felonies. Because it is a state case, Trump would not be able to pardon himself once he returns to office. Presidential pardons apply only to federal crimes. Copyright 2024 The Associated Press. The shooting rattled the city and set off a massive dragnet hours before the annual Rockefeller Center Christmas tree lighting. Police say 50-year-old Brian Thompson was shot around 6:45 a.m. Wednesday as he walked alone to the New York Hilton Midtown from a nearby hotel. New York City Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch says the shooter appeared to be “lying in wait for several minutes” before approaching Thompson from behind and opening fire. Police have not yet established a motive. UnitedHealthcare CEO kept a low public profile. Then he was shot to death in New York NEW YORK (AP) — Brian Thompson led one of the biggest health insurers in the US but was unknown to the millions of people his decisions affected. The fatal shooting of UnitedHealthcare's chief executive on a midtown Manhattan sidewalk early Wednesday swiftly became a mystery that riveted the nation. Police say it was a targeted killing. Thompson was 50. He had run health care giant UnitedHealth Group Inc.'s insurance business since 2021. It provides health coverage for more than 49 million Americans. He had worked at the company for 20 years. The business run by Thompson brought in $281 billion in revenue last year. Thompson's $10.2 million annual compensation package made him one of the company’s highest-paid executives. Hegseth fights to save Pentagon nomination as sources say Trump considers DeSantis WASHINGTON (AP) — Pete Hegseth, Donald Trump’s Pentagon pick, is fighting to hold on to his Cabinet nomination amid growing questions about his personal conduct as the president-elect’s team considers alternatives, including Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis. But Hegseth says, “We’re not backing down one bit." The Trump transition team is concerned about Hegseth’s path to Senate confirmation and is actively looking at potential replacements, according to a person familiar with the matter. Hegseth is under pressure as senators weigh a series of allegations that have surfaced against him. Beyond DeSantis, there have been discussions about shifting Michael Waltz, who was named by Trump as his national security adviser, to the Defense Department Supreme Court seems likely to uphold Tennessee's ban on medical treatments for transgender minors WASHINGTON (AP) — Hearing a high-profile culture-war clash, the Supreme Court on Wednesday seemed likely to uphold Tennessee’s ban on gender-affirming care for minors. The justices’ decision, not expected for several months, could affect similar laws enacted by another 25 states and a range of other efforts to regulate the lives of transgender people, including which sports competitions they can join and which bathrooms they can use. The case is being weighed by a conservative-dominated court after a presidential election in which Donald Trump and his allies promised to roll back protections for transgender people. The Biden administration’s top Supreme Court lawyer warned a decision favorable to Tennessee also could be used to justify nationwide restrictions on transgender healthcare for minors. Peter Navarro served prison time related to Jan. 6. Now Trump is bringing him back as an adviser WASHINGTON (AP) — President-elect Donald Trump is bringing Peter Navarro back to the White House for his second administration. Trump announced Wednesday on Truth Social that Navarro will serve as a senior counselor for trade and manufacturing. He was a trade adviser in Trump's first term. Navarro served four months in prison after being held in contempt of Congress for defying a subpoena from the House committee that investigated the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol. Trump also chose Daniel Driscoll as Army secretary, Jared Isaacman as NASA administrator and Adam Boehler as special presidential envoy for hostage affairs. Israeli strikes on a Gaza tent camp kill at least 21 people, hospital says KHAN YOUNIS, Gaza Strip (AP) — A Palestinian health official said Wednesday that at least 21 people were killed in Israeli strikes on a camp housing displaced people in Gaza. The Israeli military said it struck senior Hamas militants. The strikes hit in the Muwasi area, a sprawling coastal camp housing hundreds of thousands of displaced people. It came after Israeli forces struck targets in other areas of Gaza. According to Palestinian medics, strikes in central Gaza killed eight people, including four children. The war in Gaza is nearly 14 months old and showing no end in sight, despite international efforts to revive negotiations toward a ceasefire. South Korean President Yoon's martial law declaration raises questions over his political future SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — President Yoon Suk Yeol’s stunning martial law declaration lasted just hours, but experts say it raised serious questions about his ability to govern for the remaining 2 1/2 years of his term. The opposition-controlled parliament overturned the edict, and his rivals on Wednesday took steps to impeach him. Yoon's move baffled many experts. One analyst called his action “political suicide.” Yoon’s political fate may depend on whether a large number of people in coming days take to the streets to push for his ouster. Yoon hasn't commented on the impeachment bid. But the political instability he unleashed could make it more difficult for his government to nurse a decaying economy. French lawmakers vote to oust prime minister in the first successful no-confidence vote since 1962 PARIS (AP) — France’s far-right and left-wing lawmakers have joined together to vote on a no-confidence motion prompted by budget disputes that forces Prime Minister Michel Barnier and his Cabinet to resign. The National Assembly approved the motion by 331 votes. A minimum of 288 were needed. President Emmanuel Macron insisted he will serve the rest of his term until 2027. However, he will need to appoint a new prime minister for the second time after July’s legislative elections led to a deeply divided parliament. Macron will address the French on Thursday evening, his office said, without providing details. Barnier is expected to formally resign by then. White House says at least 8 US telecom firms, dozens of nations impacted by China hacking campaign WASHINGTON (AP) — A top White House official says at least eight U.S. telecom firms and dozens of nations have been impacted by a Chinese hacking campaign. Deputy national security adviser Anne Neuberger offered the new details Wednesday about the breadth of the sprawling Chinese hacking campaign that gave officials in Beijing access to private texts and phone conversations of an unknown number of Americans. Neuberger divulged the scope of the hack a day after the FBI and the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency issued guidance intended to help root out the hackers and prevent similar cyberespionage in the future. White House officials cautioned that a number of telecommunication firms and countries impacted could still grow. Harris found success with women who have cats, but Trump got the dog owner vote: AP VoteCast WASHINGTON (AP) — The lead-up to the 2024 election was all about cat owners. But in the end, the dogs had their day. Donald Trump won more than half of voters who own either cats or dogs, and he had with a big assist from dog owners. That's according to AP VoteCast, a survey of more than 120,000 voters. Dog owners were much more likely to support Trump over Kamala Harris. Cat owners were evenly split between the two candidates. Harris did end up decisively winning support from women who own a cat but no dog. Past comments by Trump's running mate, JD Vance, about “childless cat ladies” briefly became a campaign issue.

Olympic champion cyclist Evenepoel sustains fractures and a dislocated collarbone in training crashShedeur Sanders hurt by brutal 'cheap shot' in Colorado game as fans fume at officialsA Texas amateur boxer-turned-cheerleader went viral after her dad recorded her shadowboxing on the sidelines of a youth football game at AT&T Stadium in Dallas — and he hopes the clip of “Mighty Mia” throwing hands on the field inspires young girls around the globe. Of course, Mia Pinney, 14, of Ingleside, is no crunch-and-punch queen — she’s the national top dog in the female 75- and 85-pound weight classes for her age, according to Channel 3 News in Corpus Christi. Her dad — and boxing coach — Jordan Pinney was wary when she said earlier this year that she wanted to be a cheerleader, too. “I didn’t want it to interfere with her boxing and the goals that she has, because she is a national champ,” Jordan said. “She does have a lot of talent, and she also has the capability to be a world champion someday.” But he acquiesced in the end — and last weekend, the father-daughter duo found a new way to blend the two sports in a video that quickly became a viral sensation. “I was in the middle of cheering and my dad was like, ‘Hey, let’s get a video of you,’” Mia told the network. “And I was just like, ‘Dad now is not the time or place.’” But she overcame her embarrassment and started to move on the sidelines of the Dallas Cowboys’ field, cutting sharp angles as she flung effortless combinations into the air. “I went down there, and I started shadowboxing, and I just thought it was going to be like any other video,” Mia said. Jordan recorded the 10-second clip from the stands, then posted it on her Instagram page with the caption, “Have you ever seen a cheerleader box like that?” The Coastal Bend girl quickly became insta-famous for her slick skills, racking up 380,000 likes on the video that was later shared by ESPN, garnering millions of views. Instagram commenters marveled at her boxing acumen and made jokes about her ferocious style. “If she says, ‘Give me a Y!’ You better give her that Y,” one quipped. “Guess who ain’t getting picked on at school?” another user said. “She got more fight in her than the team that plays in that stadium,” a third said, mocking the Cowboys’ lackluster season. Her dad hopes the clip will influence girls his teen daughter has never even met. “I truly think that the video will inspire young girls all over the world,” said Jordan, who coaches at a nonprofit that teaches kids to box. But “Mighty Mia” — who first laced up the gloves at age 6 — said she’s hoping recognition from the video helps her get opportunities and sponsors in the rough-and-tumble boxing world. “I just kept on putting God first and I kept on showing up every day, even the days that I didn’t want to,” Mia said. Now, the 2028 Olympic hopeful is focused on her looming bouts at the 2024 USA Boxing National Championships in Richmond, Virginia, later this month. But Jordan said he’s thankful his daughter picked up the new sport — despite his prior reservations. “She’s also been able to go on to the cheer team and make new friends and learn a new skill,” he said. “I believe it has truly helped her boxing also.”

WPC to host two-day workshop to promote women’s rights, inclusive politicsSaturday, November 30, 2024 Winter’s first major storm has descended upon the Great Lakes region, bringing heavy lake-effect snow and causing widespread travel disruptions in New York and Michigan. This sudden burst of extreme weather coincides with a busy holiday weekend, complicating both travel and shopping plans. New York forecasters have predicted 4 to 6 feet of lake-effect snow for areas east of Lake Ontario, including Watertown and Adams along I-81. Similarly, Buffalo and regions south of Lake Erie are expected to receive 2 to 3 feet of snow through Monday. The storm has resulted in rapidly deteriorating conditions, prompting New York Governor Kathy Hochul to declare a disaster emergency for affected counties, enabling state agencies to mobilize resources. Lake-effect snow occurs when cold, dry air passes over warm lake waters, creating intense snowfall bands. According to Erie County Public Works Commissioner William Geary, unusually warm lake temperatures are fueling the current storm. “The lake is 50 degrees, about six degrees above the seasonal norm, which explains these heavy snow events,” Geary noted. As snow intensified on Friday, sections of Interstate 90 were closed, and bans on tandem and commercial vehicles were implemented on Interstate 86 and parts of Route 219 in western New York. Erie County’s Deputy Director for Preparedness and Homeland Security, Gregory Butcher, reported numerous vehicles stranded on Route 219. Snowmobiles and ATVs have been deployed to assist first responders. The Buffalo Bills have called for volunteers to help clear snow from Highmark Stadium ahead of their Sunday night game against the San Francisco 49ers. With over 2 feet of snow forecast for the area, officials are working around the clock to ensure safety. Erie County Executive Mark Poloncarz emphasized the challenges, saying, “It’s going to be slow going, there’s no doubt about that.” Despite the storm, the Bills are preparing to play in any conditions, as noted by head coach Sean McDermott. Meanwhile, Michigan’s Upper Peninsula (UP) is grappling with its own lake-effect snowstorm. Some areas are already buried under more than a foot of snow, with up to 3 feet expected by Sunday night. The National Weather Service (NWS) in Gaylord warned of reduced visibility due to gusty winds, urging caution for drivers. “We’ve got a pretty good setup for a long-duration lake-effect snowfall event,” said NWS meteorologist Lily Chapman. “This westerly, northwesterly flow combined with a cold air mass is leading to significant snow accumulation across the UP.” Visibility has been limited on Michigan’s roads, but no major accidents have been reported as of Friday evening. The timing of this storm has added to the region’s challenges. With holiday shopping in full swing and travelers trying to navigate roads and airports, the heavy snowfall is likely to cause significant delays. Emergency management teams are urging residents to avoid unnecessary travel and prepare for potential power outages. Last year, similar lake-effect conditions forced the NFL to delay a Buffalo Bills playoff game due to unsafe weather. While Sunday’s game is expected to proceed as planned, fans and players alike will face wintry conditions. State officials in both New York and Michigan are mobilizing resources to handle the storm. Snowplows, salt trucks, and emergency vehicles are on standby, while residents are advised to stock up on essential supplies and stay indoors where possible. The lake-effect snow is expected to subside by early next week, but colder-than-average temperatures and more snow events are likely as December progresses. This significant lake-effect snowstorm has disrupted travel and daily life across New York and Michigan, underscoring the challenges of living near the Great Lakes during winter. As emergency crews work tirelessly to keep roads clear and assist those in need, residents are reminded to prioritize safety and avoid unnecessary risks. Why some brewing companies are producing more hop-forward ales and light-bodied lagers

A five-star recruit in 2023 out of Denton, Texas, Arnold began this season as the starter, lost his spot and later regained it as the Sooners went 6-6. Monday is the first day that underclassmen can transfer during the winter portal window. Arnold completed 154 of 246 passes (62.6 percent) for 1,421 yards, 12 touchdowns and three interceptions in 10 games. He also ran the ball 150 times for 444 yards and three TDs, including 25 attempts for 131 yards in the Sooners' 24-3 win over Alabama on Nov. 23. As a freshman last season playing behind Dillon Gabriel, Arnold appeared in seven games and was 44 of 69 (63.8 percent) for 563 yards, four TDs and three picks. A former Gatorade Texas Player of the Year, Arnold started for Oklahoma in the Alamo Bowl last December, when the Sooners lost 38-24 to Arizona. He was QB1 for the 2024 campaign, but three early turnovers caused him to be pulled in a 25-15 defeat to Tennessee on Sept. 21 and replaced by true freshman Michael Hawkins Jr. Arnold came off the bench to replace Hawkins in a 35-9 loss to South Carolina on Oct. 19, and head coach Brent Venables afterward fired offensive coordinator Seth Littrell. Co-offensive coordinator Joe Jon Finley became the interim play-caller. Venables filled the position permanently on Monday by hiring Washington State OC Ben Arbuckle, who could bring Cougars QB John Mateer with him to Norman, Okla. --Field Level Media

Few come from elite-level swimming, where the 100-200m freestyler was around two seconds from making Australia's Olympic team for Paris. Just weeks after missing selection, Mooney played football for the first time in four years. Four months later, he was a Riverina Football League premiership player at Colingullie-Wagga. "I will still stay in the water to keep fit, but it felt more like a chore," he admitted of the gruelling nine swim and three gym sessions a week, plus a dry land session and various recovery activities, such as yoga and pilates. Some sessions started around 5am. "I saw close mates who I grew up with getting drafted and getting opportunities in footy, so I missed it," he said. Mooney had such an impact his coach Shane Lenon said the Demons would not have beaten the previously undefeated Ganmain-Grong Grong-Matong in the grand final if he did not play. "It couldn't have been a better return really winning a flag at 'Gullie," he reasoned. "That's all I could have asked for in my first year back, to be coached by 'Sparks' (Lenon) and Nick Perryman and play alongside my brother Nathanael." The super-fit 195cm, 95kg defender was surprised at the sporting transition. "I thought it was going to be a lot harder coming from that elite level in another sport, just the contact side of it (was difficult), I was walking around like I had whiplash for a month after," he laughed. Mooney is hoping to play VFL full-time next year, but is training twice a week with the Hoppers. Only 20, he will look to utilise his experiences from swimming.
