Venu Holding Corporation Reports Its Third Quarter Results Ending September 30, 2024Died: December 29th, 2024 The death at 100 of the USâs 39th and longest living president , James Earl Carter, a peanut farmer and Baptist preacher, sees the passing of a remarkable Southerner who infused his politics with a rare down-to-earth moralism, sincerity and honesty. A refreshing outsider to Washington politics, he surprised all by sweeping aside the capitalâs old post-Watergate elite to leave a legacy that pointed in new directions even if it never quite achieved his promise. âHe decided to use power righteously,â biographer Kai Bird would write, âignore politics, and do the right thing. He was, in fact, a fan of the establishmentâs favourite Protestant theologian, Reinhold Niebuhr, who wrote, âIt is the sad duty of politics to establish justice in a sinful worldâ.â Although he had notable successes in office from 1977 to 1981, not least the Camp David Accord between Egypt and Israel, he would be the first incumbent president since Herbert Hoover in 1932 to lose a re-election bid. Ronald Reagan used the economic challenges and oil crisis faced by his administration, and the disastrously bungled attempted Iran hostage rescue, to successfully portray Carter as a weak and ineffectual leader. In some ways Carter was a paradox. Although an opponent of segregation in a segregationist state, he played the race card to get elected to governorship in 1971, then announcing that âthe time of racial discrimination is overâ. From then on, however, he was an unwavering champion of civil rights, and his presidential bid attracted some 85 per cent support from the black community. Born on October 1st, 1924, in tiny Plains, Georgia, to Bessie Lillian Gordy and James Earl Carter snr, a shopkeeper and investor in farmland, the young Carter would successfully develop a peanut farm as an offshoot of the family business. His father was a descendant of English immigrant Thomas Carter, who settled in the Colony of Virginia in 1635. Carter enrolled in the US Naval Academy in 1946 and while there met and married Rosalynn Smith, a friend of his sisterâs. He served in nuclear submarines, and was drafted in to assist in the dismantling of the Chalk River nuclear reactor in Canada following a partial meltdown. His experience, he would later say, shaped his views on atomic energy and led him to end development of the neutron bomb. The early death of his father saw his return to the family business and a gradual immersion in the Democratic politics of Georgia. Although opposed to segregation â as a member of the Baptist Church he spoke openly against racism and attempts to segregate worship â he tempered his approach when he ran for office, even courting the arch-segregationist Wallace vote. Still an outsider in national politics, he surprised observers by winning the 1976 Democratic presidential nomination and narrowly defeating incumbent Republican president Gerald Ford. As the campaign developed in the wake of the still-fresh reverberations of the Watergate scandal, Carter, now with running mate senator Walter Mondale, tirelessly travelled the country projecting himself as an outsider with an easy common touch, not averse to populist slogans. He won the popular vote by 50.1 per cent to 48.0 per cent. Within two days of assuming the presidency he took the controversial step of pardoning all Vietnam War draft evaders. Carter was actively engaged on the world stage, from day one, hoping above all to broker peace in the Middle East. He invited Egyptian president Anwar Sadat and Israeli prime minister Menachem Begin to the presidential lodge Camp David in September 1978 with the negotiations resulting in an end to the state of war between the two countries, Egypt formally recognising Israel for the first time, and the creation of an elected government in the West Bank and Gaza. [ Leo Varadkar could learn something from Jimmy Carter about how to retire Opens in new window ] He oversaw the return of the Panama Canal to Panama, and signed the landmark Salt II treaty on ballistic arms reductions with Soviet leader Leonid Brezhnev. (Although the latter was signed in 1979 in Vienna, the US Senate refused to ratify it in response to the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan.) Following that invasion, Carter allowed the sale of military supplies to China and started talks about sharing military intelligence. He began a programme of what would become hugely controversial covert assistance to the Afghan mujahideen, some of them precursors to todayâs Taliban. He sought closer relations with the Peopleâs Republic of China (PRC), continuing the rapprochement engaged in by Richard Nixon. The end of his presidency was blighted by the Iran hostage crisis. Misbriefed by the CIA about the stability of the Shahâs regime, Carter pledged in 1977 that his administration would continue with positive relations between the US and Iran, calling the latter âstrong, stable and progressiveâ. After the surprise revolution installed an Islamist regime in November 1979, a group of Iranian students took over the US embassy in Tehran. Fifty-two American diplomats and citizens were held hostage for the next 444 days. An airborne mission to free them failed, leaving eight American servicemen dead and two aircraft destroyed. The hostages were freed immediately after Ronald Reagan succeeded Carter as president â leading figures in the Reagan campaign are reported to have signalled to the Iranians not to release the hostages until Carter was defeated, as Reagan would give them a better deal. Breaking with traditional US unwillingness to step out of line from its closest ally, the UK, Carter in 1977 agreed to issue a declaration on Ireland calling for the establishment in Northern Ireland of a government which would command widespread acceptance and for an overall solution which would involve the support of the Irish government. The US would facilitate any such agreement with assistance in creating jobs, he said. âThe precedent created by Carter has facilitated the enormous involvement in Ireland of his successors,â Irelandâs then-ambassador to the US, Sean Donlon, has written. It was an engagement and pledge that would be honoured by Reagan in his talks with British prime minister Margaret Thatcher, and in the establishment of the International Fund for Ireland. The latter has seen close to $1 billion invested in Irish projects since then. In 1979, Carter invited taoiseach Jack Lynch on an official visit to the US and paid a private visit to Ireland in 1995, fishing in Kilkenny and indulging his woodworking skills by helping to build a house in Ballyfermot for Habitat for Humanity, an NGO he worked closely with. Domestically, Carter had an uneasy relationship with both his own party and Republicans in Congress. His tenure in office was marked by an economic malaise, a time of continuing inflation and recession, and the 1979 energy crisis. His administration established the department of energy and the department of education. He also created a national energy policy that included conservation, price control, and new technology. He installed solar water heating panels on the White House and wore sweaters to offset turning down the heat. He deregulated the airline industry, paving the way for middle-class Americans to fly for the first time in large numbers, and deregulated natural gas, laying the groundwork for the countryâs current energy independence. He forced through the Alaska Land Act, tripling the size of the nationâs protected wilderness areas. The battle for renomination loomed. Carter had to run against his own stagflation-ridden economy, while the hostage crisis in Iran dominated the news every week. He alienated liberal college students, who were expected to be his base, by reinstating registration for the military draft. [ âHeâs an inspirationâ: tributes pour in after Jimmy Carter enters hospice care Opens in new window ] Though initially trailing Carter by several points, Reagan saw a surge in polling after the TV debate, in which he practised the patronising put-down â âthere you go againâ â that became his election mantra. Carterâs defeat was a landslide. After leaving the White House, he became an activist former president, ploughing a largely solitary but effective furrow. In the view of many it is his retirement that will be seen as his singular legacy. In 1982, he established the Carter Center to promote and expand human rights. Its work would earn him a Nobel Peace Prize in 2002. In July 2007, he joined Nelson Mandela to announce his participation with former president of Ireland Mary Robinson, among others, in The Elders, a group of independent global leaders who work on peace and human rights issues. He travelled extensively to conduct peace negotiations, monitor elections and further the eradication of infectious diseases. He played a key role in the NGO Habitat for Humanity, and wrote books and memoirs, often sharply critical of US policy, not least over the Iraq War. In a work on the Palestinian-Israeli conflict he controversially labelled the Israeli treatment of the Palestinians âapartheidâ. Though he praised Barack Obama in the early part of his tenure, Carter attacked the use of drone strikes against suspected terrorists and the decision to keep GuantaĚnamo Bay detention camp open. His blunt critiques of his Democrat successors meant they would all keep him at armâs length until Joe Biden latterly re-engaged with him enthusiastically. To the end he worked tirelessly. Biographer Bird, who insists that Carter âremains the most misunderstood president of the last centuryâ, described one recent meeting: âHe was in his early 90s yet was still rising with the dawn and getting to work early. I once saw him conduct a meeting at 7am at the Carter Center where he spent 40 minutes pacing back and forth onstage, explaining the details of his programme to wipe out Guinea worm disease. He was relentless. Later that day he gave me, his biographer, exactly 50 minutes to talk about his White House years. Those bright blue eyes bore into me with an alarming intensity. But he was clearly more interested in the Guinea worms. âCarter devoted his life to solving problems,â Bird says, âlike an engineer, by paying attention to the minutiae of a complicated world. He once told me that he hoped to outlive the last Guinea worm. Last year there were only 13 cases of Guinea worm disease in humans. He may have succeeded.â Rosalynn Carter died in November 2023 and Jimmy Carter emerged from hospice care to mourn her. They had three sons, Jack, Chip and Jeff; one daughter, Amy; nine grandsons (one of whom is deceased), three granddaughters, five great-grandsons, and eight great-granddaughters.

EL SEGUNDO, Calif. (AP) â Justin Herbert is dealing with an ankle injury for the second time this season. The Chargers quarterback did not practice Wednesday as Los Angeles began preparations for its game Sunday against Tampa Bay. Herbert injured his left ankle during the first quarter of last Sunday's 19-17 loss at Kansas City. Herbert said Wednesday that the injury occurred during a 7-yard scramble on third down during the opening drive. Television cameras showed him grimacing and walking slowly to the sideline after the play. âIt was difficult to play with," he said. "It was one of those things where we limited some of the runs out of the pocket. I didn't feel great, but it was one of those things to play through.â Herbert's left leg was later bruised after taking a hard hit from linebacker Nick Bolton during the second quarter. Herbert missed only one play and completed 21 of 30 passes for 213 yards and a touchdown. âThe contusion, I think that is something that is easily recoverable. I'm doing everything I can with the ankle,â Herbert said. âIf I felt like I could have practiced at 100% and make sure everyone was able to get full-speed reps, I would have. I didn't think I was able to do that today, so the trainers and I were on the same page.â Herbert suffered a high sprain to his right ankle during the third quarter of a 26-3 win at Carolina on Sept. 15. That limited his mobility and some of the play calls in losses to Pittsburgh and Kansas City the next two games. However, Herbert is not in a walking boot this time, which was the case with the injury earlier in the season. The fifth-year quarterback also said the pain tolerance with his ankle injury is better to deal with compared to the earlier one. âIâd like to see him get treatment and not be on his feet. He will do everything in his power to play on Sunday,â coach Jim Harbaugh said. The Chargers have lost two of their last three, but are the sixth seed in the AFC with an 8-5 record. After facing NFC South-leading Tampa Bay on Sunday, Los Angeles hosts Denver in a Thursday night matchup on Dec. 19 as both teams are vying for a playoff spot. It's the second time in three seasons Herbert is dealing with an injury after a game at Kansas City. In 2022, he fractured rib cartilage after taking a hard hit from Chiefs defensive lineman Michael Danna during the fourth quarter. Herbert missed two weeks during training camp because of an injury to the plantar fascia in his right foot. He also had a torn labrum in his non-throwing shoulder near the end of the 2022 season and two broken fingers last year, including one on his throwing hand that caused him to miss the final four games. Herbert has joined Tom Brady as the only players who have not thrown an interception in 11 straight games with a minimum of 15 attempts in each game. Brady accomplished the feat with New England in 2010. The last time Herbert was picked off was midway through the first quarter on Sept. 15 by Carolinaâs Jaycee Horn. Herbert has also gone 335 consecutive pass attempts without an interception, the fifth-longest streak in league history. National News | A timeline of the fatal shooting of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson and search for his killer Ryan Wesley Routhâs public defenders told District Judge Aileen Cannon they cannot prepare their case by February when the trial is currently scheduled, saying thatâs not enough time to review the massive amounts of phone and computer evidence the FBI has retrieved. Routh owned 17 cellphones and numerous other electronic devices, plus there are hundreds of hours of police body camera and surveillance videos that have been provided to the defense. Assistant federal public defender Kristy Militello told Cannon the only other clients she has had with more voluminous evidence presented against them are those accused of complicated frauds and two who were accused of taking part in the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S Capitol. Only one other attorney and an investigator are working with her on the case and she has other clients who also require her time, Militello said. Unlike prosecutors, âI donât have the resources of the FBIâ to go through the evidence, Militello told Cannon, a Trump appointee who also presided over the president-electâs alleged stolen documents case and eventually threw it out . Routh, 58, sat quietly throughout Wednesdayâs hearing, shackled in the same seat Trump occupied during pretrial hearings in his case. Routh, a Hawaii resident, has pleaded not guilty. Prosecutor John Shipley Jr. told Cannon that while he agreed that February is not a realistic schedule, pushing the trial back a year would violate the speedy trial rights of Trump and the Secret Service agent Routh is accused of aiming his rifle at. He did not suggest a specific date but said next summer would not be preferable as many potential jurors would have vacation conflicts. He told Cannon that while the computer files are large, they are mostly Routhâs and he should be able to assist his attorneys in sorting through them. He also said that unlike a fraud case, where evidence is often complicated, the accusations against Routh are straightforward and simple. Prosecutors say Routh methodically plotted to kill Trump for weeks before aiming a rifle through the shrubbery as Trump played golf on Sept. 15 at his West Palm Beach country club. Before Trump came into view, Routh was spotted by a Secret Service agent. Routh allegedly aimed his rifle at the agent, who opened fire, causing Routh to drop his weapon and flee without firing a shot. Prosecutors say he left behind a note describing his intentions. He was arrested a short time later driving on a nearby interstate. The sides briefly showed their hands on a possible insanity defense. Militelo said the last person to speak with Routh before he was spotted at the golf course told the FBI that he seemed to be hallucinating. She said other witnesses have told agents that Routh is delusional. Shipley told Cannon that an insanity defense would have no merit as his attorneys would have to show that Routh has a mental disease or defect that left him unable to appreciate the nature and wrongfulness of his acts. Clearly, he understood his actions, Shipley said. Among the evidence prosecutors say they have are computer searches Routh made about flights from nearby Palm Beach International Airport to Mexico. Routhâs charge of attempted assassination of a major presidential candidate carries a potential life sentence in the event of a conviction. Other charges include assaulting a federal officer and three firearms counts. He is being held without bail at the federal jail in Miami. Routhâs arrest came two months after Trump was shot and wounded in the ear in an assassination attempt during a campaign rally in Pennsylvania. The Secret Service acknowledged failings leading up to that shooting but has said security worked as it should have to thwart the potential Florida attack.

We deeply appreciate their dedication to protecting our community.â Pete Hegseth, Trumpâs nominee to lead the Pentagon, was also targeted. Like Gaetz, with a woman telling police that he raped her at a California hotel in 2017, an encounter Hegseth has said was consensual. Howard Lutnick, the Cantor Fitzgerald CEO and commerce secretary nominee, was one of the targets of the threats. Lutnick has been active in the media defending Trumpâs agenda and personnel choices in his role as co-chair of the transition, including explaining how Trump is set to use tariffs. John Ratcliffe, Trumpâs nominee to be the next CIA director, served as the director of national intelligence during Trumpâs first term. He was also identified as one of the targets. Trump called Ratcliffe a âwarrior for Truth and Honesty with the American Publicâ on social media when announcing his pick. During his time as a congressman, Ratcliffe fought for Trump, pushing investigations into President Joe Bidenâs son Hunter and criticizing the investigations into connections between the 2016 Trump campaign and Russia. The threats come after a presidential campaign that saw Trump was targeted in two assassination attempts. The former president was grazed in the ear during a shooting in Pennsylvania this summer and was subsequently the target in an attempt stopped by the Secret Service at his West Palm Beach Florida golf course. Speaker has called on President Joe Biden and other Democrats to condemn the incidents. âThis year, there was not just one but TWO assassination attempts on President Trump. Now some of his Cabinet nominees and their families are facing bomb threats,â he . âThis is dangerous and unhinged. It is not who we are in America. Joe Biden and all Democrat leaders have an obligation to speak up and condemn this now.â The White House soon issued a statement condemning the violent threats. âThe White House is in touch with federal law enforcement and the President-electâs team, and continues to monitor the situation closely,â a White House spokesperson said. âFederal law enforcementâs response, alongside state and local authorities, remains ongoing. Luigi Mangione could be facing an uphill legal battle as a suspect in the shooting of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson due to the mounting evidence against him, according to a Baltimore attorney with ties to the family. A retrieved firearm and alleged manifesto contribute to what criminal defense attorney Tomas J. Maronick describes as âvery strongâ evidence against Mangione. Maronick, who runs the Baltimore firm Maronick Law LLC, hosted the "Tom Moore Show," a weekend politics, legal issues and entertainment program, for the Mangione family-owned WCBM-AM radio station for 20 years from 2003 until 2023. During that time, Maronick knew several members of the family, including patriarch Nick Mangione Sr., and Maryland delegate Nino Mangione, who was the web content director at the time. While Maronick does not recall if he met Luigi Mangione, he said he was shocked when he heard the news about the shooting. âWhen I saw the name, and they said âMangione,â I said, âThis canât be,ââ Maronick said. ââThis canât be the same family I worked with for 20 years.â It turns out it was. I was shocked like anyone else. Itâs the last family name you would suspect being associated with something like this.â New York prosecutors have charged Mangione with one count of murder, two counts of second-degree criminal possession of a weapon, one count of second-degree possession of a forged document and one count of third-degree criminal possession of a weapon. He was denied bail during a court appearance Tuesday in Pennsylvania. Mangione is also fighting extradition and will remain at Huntingdon State Correctional Institution until prosecutors obtain a governorâs warrant to take him back to New York to face charges. Maronick acknowledged that Mangione faces a tough legal battle to be cleared of the charges. In addition, multiple reports surfaced Wednesday stating that Mangioneâs fingerprints were found at the scene of the shooting. âThe evidence in this case looks very strong,â Maronick said. âYou have a firearm that matches the kind that appears to have been used in the commission of the crime in his possession. You have a manifesto that appears to provide a motive for this. Then, you have a detachment from the family.â Maronick expects that Mangioneâs defense attorney might request a competency evaluation, which is mental health assessment to determine whether a criminal defendant is able to understand and participate in the legal process, after Mangione had an outburst while being led by police for an extradition hearing in Pennsylvania, yelling to reporters: âThis is completely out of touch and an insult to the intelligence of the American people and their lived experience.â Bradley S. Shepherd, a defense attorney with Posner & Cord LLC in Maryland, said this case has already been sensationalized in the media with a public investigation. The outburst only added to the controversy. âThe most basic piece of advice that any criminal defense attorney can give to a client or a prospective client is donât say anything to the police or press or anyone,â Shepherd said. University of Maryland Francis King Carey School of Law professor Doug Colbert does not think a competency hearing will be needed due to Mangioneâs educational background and academic prowess. Colbert said Mangione likely understands the gravity of the case against him. Another challenge facing both defense attorneys and prosecutors is finding an unbiased jury pool. The current state of the health care industry with increased prices and denied care has polarized society, underscored by the support of Mangione on social media. âThe jury pool is going to be one where you really ask questions about health care,â Maronick said. âYou want to ask what peopleâs views are and if they have ever been denied a claim. What is their experience with health care companies? Do they have a favorable impression? Have they had bad experiences? Have they had claims denied? Both sides are going to want to have those questions asked.â Shepherd is confident the system will find an effective jury. He noted that while the criminal trial of President-elect Donald Trump earlier this year was difficult to find able jurors and the selection lasted a week, the court was able to effectively complete the process. âTo my knowledge, in the history of United States jurisprudence, we have never failed to find 12 jurors who are fit for the job,â Shepherd said. âIâd be interested to read a book where that was not the case.â The Mangione case has reached far beyond Maryland and is now an international story. Maronick has done interviews about the case with the BBC, which broadcasts across Europe. As a result, he said he doesnât see any reason a judge would move the case from New York . âI donât think a motion to change venues is going to do much when it does get to New York because this is a national, and I would even say an international, case,â Maronick said. âItâs gotten so much publicity. I donât think you would have a better or worse jury somewhere else. Itâs been reported everywhere.â However, according to Maronick, the crimes does not tarnish the reputation of the Mangione family. âItâs such an esteemed, classy family,â Maronick said. âThey are people who were not only incredibly supportive of my career at WCBM, but everyone else, with charity and how they donated money and have their name on the aquatic center at Loyola University Maryland.â Š2024 Baltimore Sun. MELBOURNE, Australia and INDIANAPOLIS , Dec. 30, 2024 /PRNewswire/ â Telix Pharmaceuticals Limited (ASX: TLX; Nasdaq: TLX, Telix, the Company) today announces that it has submitted its Biologics License Application (BLA) to the United States (U.S.) Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for TLX250-CDx (ZircaixÂŽ[1], 89 Zr- girentuximab) kidney cancer imaging[2]. TLX250-CDx is an investigational PET[3] drug product for the non-invasive diagnosis and characterisation of clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC), the most common and aggressive form of kidney cancer. If approved, TLX250-CDx will be the first and only targeted PET agent specifically for kidney cancer to be commercially available in the U.S., further building on Telixâs successful urology imaging franchise. The FDA is expected to advise the PDUFA[4] goal date following the 60-day administrative review of the application. Kevin Richardson , Chief Executive Officer, Precision Medicine at Telix, stated, âWe are pleased to be progressing the BLA for TLX250-CDx, which has been granted Breakthrough designation, and may therefore be eligible for priority review. Telix continues to target a full U.S. commercial launch in 2025 addressing a major unmet medical need for patients with suspected ccRCC.â About TLX250-CDx TLX250-CDx (ZircaixÂŽ 1 ) is an investigational PET agent that is under development for the diagnosis and characterisation of ccRCC. Telixâs pivotal Phase III ZIRCON trial (ClinicalTrials.gov ID: NCT03849118 ) evaluating TLX250-CDx in 300 patients, of whom 284 were evaluable, met all primary and secondary endpoints, including showing 86% sensitivity and 87% specificity and a 93% positive-predictive value for ccRCC across three independent radiology readers[5]. Telix believes this demonstrated the ability of TLX250-CDx to reliably detect the clear cell phenotype and provide an accurate, non-invasive method for diagnosing and characterising ccRCC. Confidence intervals exceeded expectations amongst all three readers, showing evidence of high accuracy and consistency of interpretation.
