Replays showed most of the ball went over the line, but the Argentinian got there with millimetres to spare. At the other end another fine goal-line block denied John McGinn as Manuel Locatelli got his foot in the way with Di Gregorio beaten. This new artificial intelligence (AI) “granny” named Daisy has been tasked with the laborious efforts that we don’t want to make – in other words, cold calls from scammers. Virgin Media O2, the UK telecommunications company behind Daisy the AI chatbot, has trained the bot to be used as a real scam-baiter – she is “indistinguishable from a real person,” and can “fool scammers into thinking they’ve found a perfect target”. Daisy can listen and respond to scam callers just like a real granny Daisy is made up of a myriad of AI models that together can listen and respond to scam callers. And just like the quintessential call from a granny, she will entertain scammers, filling them with superfluous information about knitting and her family before eventually providing false bank details. Scammers have been so convinced that they have cracked the customer’s bank details, that they have withstood up to 40 minutes of conversation just to reach the “jackpot” at the end. Sad thing is, there is no jackpot. “Daisy, is turning the tables on scammers” Daisy’s cunning ways means that the tables are turning for scammers. Murray Mackenzie, director of fraud at Virgin Media O2 said: “The newest member of our fraud-prevention team, Daisy, is turning the tables on scammers – outsmarting and outmanoeuvring them at their own cruel game simply by keeping them on the line.” The hope is that this will be a significant deterrent and will make scammers wary...as well as bored! In the UK, a February study from BDO financial services discovered fraud rates of up to £2.3 billion (€2.69 billion) in 2023 – an unfathomable increase of 104 per cent from 2022. Another study revealed that two thirds of unsuspecting respondents over 75 had suffered fraud attempts in the past six months. There is certainly an intrinsic desire to bait scammers and play them at their own game or take them for a ride, but most cannot be bothered to do it. The great thing of course is, as Mackenzie said, Daisy has “all the time in the world.” AI technology is pioneering in the UK but could reach further afield For now, the AI technology is pioneering in the UK, aimed mainly at those over 75-years-old, who tend to be susceptible to scammers. Yet this is the tip of the ice berg. NEW ORLEANS (AP) — A scruffy little fugitive is on the lam again in New Orleans, gaining fame as he outwits a tenacious band of citizens armed with night-vision binoculars, nets and a tranquilizer rifle. Scrim, a 17-pound mutt that's mostly terrier, has become a folk hero, inspiring tattoos, t-shirts and even a ballad as he eludes capture from the posse of volunteers. And like any antihero, Scrim has a backstory: Rescued from semi-feral life at a trailer park and adopted from a shelter, the dog broke loose in April and scurried around the city until he was cornered in October and brought to a new home. Weeks later, he'd had enough. Scrim leaped out of a second-story window, a desperate act recorded in a now-viral video. Since then, despite a stream of daily sightings, he's roamed free. The dog’s fans include Myra and Steve Foster, who wrote “Ode to Scrim” to the tune of Ricky Nelson’s 1961 hit, “I’m a Travelin’ Man.” Leading the recapture effort is Michelle Cheramie, a 55-year-old former information technology professional. She lost everything — home, car, possessions — in Hurricane Katrina in 2005, and in the aftermath, found her calling rescuing pets. “I was like, ‘This is what I should be doing,’” Cheramie said. “I was born to rescue.” She launched Zeus’ Rescues, a nonprofit shelter that now averages 600 cat and dog adoptions a year and offers free pet food to anyone who needs it. She helped Scrim find the home he first escaped from. It was Cheramie's window Scrim leaped from in November. She's resumed her relentless mission since then, posting flyers on telephone poles and logging social media updates on his reported whereabouts. She's invested thousands of dollars on wildlife cameras, thermal sensors and other gear. She took a course offered by the San Diego Zoo on the finer points of tranquilizing animals. And she's developed a network of volunteers — the kind of neighbors who are willing to grid-search a city at 3 a.m. People like writer David W. Brown, who manages a crowd-sourced Google Map of all known Scrim sightings. He says the search has galvanized residents from all walks of life to come together. As they search for Scrim, they hand out supplies to people in need. "Being a member of the community is seeing problems and doing what you can to make life a little better for the people around here and the animals around you," Brown said. And neighbors like Tammy Murray, who had to close her furniture store and lost her father to Parkinson's Disease. This search, she says, got her mojo back. “Literally, for months, I’ve done nothing but hunt this dog,” said Murray, 53. “I feel like Wile E. Coyote on a daily basis with him.” Murray drives the Zeus' Rescues' van towards reported Scrim sightings. She also handles a tactical net launcher, which looks like an oversized flashlight and once misfired, shattering the van's window as Scrim sped away. After realizing Scrim had come to recognize the sound of the van's diesel engine, Murray switched to a Vespa scooter, for stealth. Near-misses have been tantalizing. The search party spotted Scrim napping beneath an elevated house, and wrapped construction netting around the perimeter, but an over-eager volunteer broke ranks and dashed forward, leaving an opening Scrim slipped through. Scrim's repeated escapades have prompted near-daily local media coverage and a devoted online following. Cheramie can relate. “We’re all running from something or to something. He's doing that too,” she said. Cheramie's team dreams of placing the pooch in a safe and loving environment. But a social media chorus growing under the hashtag #FreeScrim has other ideas — they say the runaway should be allowed a life of self-determination. The animal rescue volunteers consider that misguided. “The streets of New Orleans are not the place for a dog to be free,” Cheramie said. “It’s too dangerous.” Scrim was a mess when Cheramie briefly recaptured him in October, with matted fur, missing teeth and a tattered ear. His trembling body was scraped and bruised, and punctured by multiple projectiles. A vet removed one, but decided against operating to take out a possible bullet. The dog initially appeared content indoors, sitting in Cheramie's lap or napping beside her bed. Then while she was out one day, Scrim chewed through a mesh screen, dropped 13 feet to the ground and squeezed through a gap in the fence, trotting away. Murray said Cheramie's four cats probably spooked him. “I wholeheartedly believe the gangster-ass cats were messing with him,” Murray said. Cheramie thinks they may have gotten territorial. Devastated but undeterred, the pair is reassessing where Scrim might fit best — maybe a secure animal sanctuary with big outdoor spaces where other dogs can keep him company. French President Emmanuel Macron accused Haiti's transitional council of being "total morons" for dismissing the country's prime minister, according to a video shot at the G20 summit in Brazil this week and shared on social media Thursday. In the footage, the French leader is speaking on the sidelines of the G20 in Rio with an individual accusing Macron and France of "being responsible for the situation in Haiti". Haiti's transitional council pushed out then-prime minister Garry Conille after just five months in office, a move Macron called "terrible" in the clip. "They're total morons," said Macron referring to the transitional body, adding, "they never should have dismissed him." Condemning the remarks, Haiti's Foreign Ministry said Thursday that French Ambassador Antoine Michon had been summoned following the "unacceptable comments." Haitian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Worship Jean-Victor Harvel Jean-Baptiste used the meeting to express "indignation" on behalf of the transitional council, which he said viewed the remarks as "an unfriendly and inappropriate gesture that must be rectified," according to a statement from the ministry. Haiti has suffered from decades of political instability. But in recent months, the Caribbean country has seen a surge in violence with gangs now controlling 80 percent of the capital, Port-au-Prince. The clip also shows the French president, who is on a multi-leg tour of Latin America with his most recent stop in Chile, blaming Haitians for "letting drug trafficking take over". Initially, Ukraine’s Air Force claimed that Moscow launched an intercontinental ballistic missile during an attack on the city of Dnipro early in the morning, which President Volodymyr Zelenskyy also confirmed in a later video address. But, he said that expert evaluations to confirm the exact model of the missile used are underway. “One of the largest and well-known industrial complexes from the Soviet Union, which today produces missile technology and other weapons, was hit in the city of Dnipro in Ukraine,” Putin said in a live video address. Russian Telegram channels earlier in the day said that the attack targeted the plant of Pivdenmash, Ukraine's state-owned aerospace manufacturer headquartered in Dnipro. Indicating that the strike was conducted in response to Ukraine's use of American and British long-range weapons against Russia, Putin said the attack tested a new Russian medium-range missile system named Oreshnik, which he said, in this case, utilized a ballistic missile with "non-nuclear hypersonic" equipment. Putin said such missiles are being developed by Russia in "response to the US plans to produce and deploy intermediate- and shorter-range missiles in Europe and the Asia-Pacific region.” The Russian president further said that the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, which marked its 1,000th day on Tuesday, has gained “elements of a global nature" after Western missiles were used to strike his country over the past two days. He argued that Kyiv's use of long-range Western missiles will not influence the course of its military actions in Ukraine. Putin said the issue of further deploying medium and shorter-range missiles will be decided depending on the actions of the US and its allies, and that Moscow will alert civilians in advance when using systems such as Oreshnik. Russia is entitled to use weapons against military facilities of countries that are using their weapons against Moscow, Putin said, adding that Russia’s response to escalation in Ukraine will be “decisive and in kind.” “I recommend that the ruling elites of those countries that are hatching plans to use their military contingents against Russia seriously think about this,” he added. A federal jury in Marshall, Texas, on Friday awarded computer memory company Netlist $118 million in damages from Samsung Electronics in a patent lawsuit over technology for improving data processing in high-performance memory products. Netlist also won $445 million from chipmaker Micron in May in a separate lawsuit over some of the same patents.
