Oregon already secured its spot in the Big Ten championship game, but the top-ranked Ducks have plenty to play for in their regular-season finale. Revenge may be on Oregon's mind when the Ducks host longtime rival Washington on Saturday in Eugene, Ore. Oregon (11-0, 8-0 Big Ten) would perhaps be closing in on its second straight College Football Playoff appearance had the Huskies (6-5, 4-4) not dealt the Ducks their only two losses last season. Washington edged Oregon 36-33 in Seattle last October, then slipped past the Ducks 34-31 in the Pac-12 title game to secure a playoff spot for the second time in school history. Both teams joined the Big Ten in August. Third-year Oregon head coach Dan Lanning is 33-5 leading the Ducks. But he remains winless against the Huskies (0-3). Oregon plots to sprint out of its late-season bye after using time to heal injuries, but Lanning doesn't believe the break should stall the flow of an undefeated season. "It's always about what we're able to do on the field. Motivation is overrated," Lanning said. "Our guys have to want to go out there and execute at a really high level. Since the beginning of the season we've talked about playing our best football at the end of November. We're there. This is our opportunity to go play our best football against a good team." The Ducks could have star wide receiver Tez Johnson back from a shoulder injury this week. Johnson has missed the past two games. That would be good news for quarterback Dillon Gabriel, who would regain the team's leader in receptions (64), receiving yards (649) and receiving touchdowns (eight). Washington, under first-year head coach Jedd Fisch, is 63-48-5 all-time against Oregon but is just 1-12-1 when facing the No. 1-ranked team in the country. The Huskies are led on offense by running back Jonah Coleman, who has racked up 1,008 yards and nine scores on the ground this season. Coleman averages 5.8 yards per carry and has 36 runs of at least 10 yards. In the passing game, wide receiver Denzel Boston is tied for the Big Ten lead with nine in touchdown catches and ranks sixth in the conference with 764 receiving yards. Whom Boston will be catching passes from is not yet known, however. Washington has not revealed whether Will Rogers or Demond Williams Jr. will start at quarterback. Rogers has started every game for the Huskies but was benched in favor of Williams two weeks ago after throwing a pair of interceptions in a 31-19 win over UCLA. Fisch said he has a "good idea" of how he will use his quarterbacks on Saturday, and while he wouldn't go as far as to name a starter, he did say Rogers responded well in practices last week. "On the same token, Demond's energy and Demond's confidence showed up. His ability to jump right in and feel really good about leading the group whenever it was his turn... he did a really nice job there as well," Fisch told Seattle Sports. "I think both guys responded well to the week of practice, and now, really, it's important for us that the guy we believe will start the game gets a significant amount of reps in practice week. But as you know, we're not afraid to play two quarterbacks." --Field Level Media
With rapid expansion in the gaming world, the notion of inclusivity is at the forefront of every design. As expansion occurs in all industries, more awareness is established regarding an incredible spectrum of players' needs, including those with hearing impairments. According to the research conducted by the World Health Organization, over 5% of the world’s population – about 430 million people, including 34 million children – experience disabling hearing loss that requires rehabilitation. For any deaf gamer, inadequate features of access will turn their enjoyable play from pleasurable into nagging. In this article, we will explore the challenges that hearing-impaired players face and offer solutions that can be endorsed to make the gaming experience more inclusive for all. Recognizing the Challenges The gaming experiences of people who are deaf or hard of hearing are far more different than those of someone with adequate hearing. Audio cues support gameplay in many ways, such as with the movement of enemies, changes in the environment, or the plot of a game. Without those cues, deaf players can miss essential moments that might leave an impression on the gaming experience and immersion. The missing audio cue may then have profound, sometimes devastating consequences: failure to detect an incoming attack, losing track of significant storyline development, and so on. Overall, it would then make gameplay more challenging and, of course, less enjoyable. Communication plays a more critical role in multiplayer games. Some games are team-based, depending on real-time coordination, which most commonly uses voice chat. Though most video games usually have a text chat facility, voice communication is limited to fewer games. It is thus a significant challenge for hearing-impaired players to keep track of the rapid flow of gameplay. Isolated or marginalized players who cannot participate in voice chat may feel competitively disadvantaged against their hearing counterparts. Technological Advancements and Solutions Despite all these challenges, the gaming industry has gone a long way to serve inclusively. Presently, developers are ever so aware of the need for accessibility features and are actively working on creating solutions that make gaming more enjoyable for the hearing-impaired. Some of the most effective solutions in this regard are as follows: Subtitles and Closed Captions Captions have been a synonym for accessibility since the old days of video games for hearing-impaired players. They transcribe spoken dialogue so players may continue understanding what is happening in the game. The closed captions extend the reach further by encompassing the descriptions of the non-verbal sounds, such as footsteps and environmental noises, and the sound effects in the context of explosion sounds and creaking doors. The disabled players, unable to fully hear everything in the game, can stay engaged in the action without missing the important audio-based clues. Having subtitles become extremely common in many games is very beneficial not only to deaf players but also to offer a better experience for those who find it easier to play games without sound. Visual Indicators A hearing-impaired gamer can be similarly notified of important events in a game by using visual cues to replace or supplement audio cues. For example, Fortnite and other games have used visual indicators that alert players to nearby sounds, such as footsteps or gunfire, through on-screen visual cues. The indicators may appear color-coded, flashing, or displayed at certain locations on the screen for quick notice. They could use visual signals for a threat or objective, such as flashing an icon when an enemy is close by or pulsing an area indicating in-game activity that needs attention. This will level the playing field so the hearing-impaired player will be able to react to threats at the same rate as their hearing peers. Haptic Feedback One of the emerging solutions is haptic feedback, or vibration, providing tactile responses to in-game events. This way, the player can "feel" the game as an alternate way of experiencing the audio cues. For example, a rumble in the controller could signal the incoming attack or an explosion near you to tell you what's essential in the game through touch. For instance, in Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice, they used haptic feedback to create a sensory-rich environment where specific vibrations are carefully adjusted with the specific emotional and environmental moments. This is a great way to communicate the intensity of something happening or bring a player's attention to some danger close by for deaf players. Customizable Audio Settings This factor significantly increases the accessibility of a game for hearing-impaired players by offering customizable audio settings. That is because the user can control the audio experience, finding it as perfect as possible for their needs. This could be in the form of amplifying specific sounds, say dialogue or environmental noise, while diluting background music or sound effects that might be harder to listen to. Others may allow users to alter the frequency range of particular sounds to be more perceivable for gamers with partial hearing loss. By tailoring the audio experience, hearing-impaired players can be confident of getting the most out of the game by not missing critical audio cues. The Role of Game Developers Game developers are clearly at the top when it comes to developing accessible gaming experiences . By incorporating accessibility features at the onset of game design, developers can ensure games are fun for hearing-impaired gamers and all types of players. Committing to this will help developers reach a wider audience, better player satisfaction, and improvement in the gaming community at large. According to Private Internet Access (PIA), inclusivity in game design should be central, not something to be tacked on at the end. Accessibility features in the case of a study show that hear-impaired players benefit not only the targeted individual but also the layman, who might experience partial hearing loss or who merely prefers this accommodation. With this increased awareness of accessibility issues, more game studios have begun incorporating features that support diverse gamers in a more comprehensive, inclusive community. Conclusion Inclusion gaming isn't about adding features; it is more about creating a world where everyone is appreciated and included, regardless of their abilities. The deaf gaming community will always benefit from the proper accessibility options put together thoughtfully in their game: subtitles, visual cues, haptic feedback, and customizable audio settings. As technology evolves, the door will open even more for the tearing down of barriers between the industry and inclusive experiences, allowing every player, irrespective of their ability to hear, to enjoy the world of his favorite games without limit. It is a matter of all the developers, the community, and gamers themselves to make this dream a reality when everybody can be given joy.Driver pulled from Dyer pond identified, coroner says

Local, independent bookstores have never been more important. With fair access to literature under political attack, bookstores are a bulwark against censorship and an asset to the communities they serve. Each week we profile an independent bookstore , discovering what makes each one special and getting their expert book recommendations. This week we have owner Katarina DeMaris of Fawn and Fox Books in Mcloud, Oklahoma! What’s your store’s story? Fawn and Fox Books is a small pop-up bookstore that is Indigenous and woman owned. We focus on community engagement and strive to get books into the rural Oklahoma community that surrounds us. Being a pop-up bookstore has its own unique challenges in addition to the normal challenges bookstores face. Check out: USA TODAY's Independent Bookstores Map What makes your independent bookstore unique ? Being a pop-up bookstore allows us to be moved where the community needs us. We are doing our best to bring books to rural Oklahoma and give back to the community. As the owner, I am the chair person of the Scholastic Book Fair volunteering countless hours at the school to run the program as well as volunteering in other areas in the community. What's your favorite section in your store? My pop-up is put together by wooden crates that can be stacked on top of each other giving a true traditional bookstore feeling. I have been told that the presentation is very appealing to the eye and draws the customers in. The wood crates and book scent always lingers in the booth and creates a comforting atmosphere. What book do you love to recommend to customers and why? It sounds cliche but I love to recommend "A Court of Thorns and Roses" series by Sarah J. Maas . She is the master world-builder to me, and everyone I have gotten to read it has loved it. What book do you think deserves more attention and why? I think that "Commanding Flame and Shield" by S.J. Barnett deserves so much more attention. It has to be one of my favorite books. It's a fantasy novel with a huge amazing world focusing on angels and demons with magic and past lives. The main character is the 500 year-old warrior female and the love interest is the young warrior that needs training. Of course there's a small amount of romance too. Why is shopping at local, independent bookstores important? Shopping at an independent bookstore is so important because they give back to the community whether or not it is through community engagement or taxes. Indie bookstores are a place where all people can come together, be safe and enjoy something they love. Something I have learned as a millennial is we crave experience. In the digital age we can feel so alone and disconnected from each other that we will search for the little guy living their dream and shop local when we can to grasp that feeling of togetherness. The joy that comes to me when I talk to someone about my favorite books is overwhelming. So many times I have left an independent bookstore soaring from the connection of a favorite book and that's what I want from Fawn and Fox books. Connection is why independent bookstores are important. What are some of your store's programs or partnerships coming up this quarter that you would like to share? We’re popping up at Oklahoma Street Coffee in Mcloud, OK on Dec. 28 from 8 a.m.-2 p.m.The transfer portal officially opens in a week on Dec. 9. However, that didn’t stop players from announcing their decision to enter their names in the portal as soon as the regular season ended on Saturday. Washington suffered its first portal defection on Monday, when junior Jack McCallister, the team’s starting punter, announced his intention to enter the transfer portal in a post on his social media accounts. McCallister was not a scholarship player at Washington. He still has one year of eligibility remaining. McCallister, a 6-foot, 205-pound punter from King’s High School in Shoreline, handled every UW punt except one since the 2022 season. He had 1,585 yards on 36 punts this season, averaging a career-best 44 yards per punt in 2024. "It has been a dream come true to wear purple and gold these past four years," McCallister wrote in a post on his social media accounts. " The Edmonds native arrived at Washington in 2021 as a walk-on. He redshirted his first season on Montlake behind Race Porter, before taking over as the team’s starting punter under coach Kalen DeBoer in 2022. McCallister averaged 40.8 yards on 23 punts as a redshirt freshman in 2022. He handled every single punt during the 2023 campaign, averaging 41.7 yards on a career high 45 punts. He allowed just eight punt returns for 24 yards during the entire season with 21 of his punts resulting in fair catches. Thirteen of his punts were inside an opposing team’s 20-yard line. He continued as the team’s starting punter in 2023 after DeBoer’s departure. McCallister had a career-high eight punts go more than 50 yards in 2024, and kicked a career-long 62-yard punt on Oct. 26 during Washington’s 31-17 loss to No. 10 Indiana However, Washington’s punt coverage — like its kickoff coverage — has struggled. McCallister and the Huskies have allowed 18 punt returns this season for 269 yards, meaning opponents are averaging 14.94 yards per return. UW ranks No. 124 in punt-return defense this season, comparable with Rutgers (No. 125), Marshall (No. 126) and Kent State (No. 127). Washington gave up a 65-yard return against Indiana, a 37-yard return during its 40-16 loss to Iowa on Oct. 12 and a 33-yard return versus Washington State in the 24-19 Apple Cup defeat on Sept. 14. Washington has two other punters on its roster for a potential bowl game: junior Adam Saul and sophomore Troy Petz. Both are also walk-ons and have never seen playing time with the Huskies. However, Saul spent two seasons at Illinois State then was a second-team All-league selection at El Camino College in 2022 before joining UW in 2023. Saul had 55 punts and averaged 42.5 yards per punt in his only season of junior college football. Saul still has one season of eligibility remaining.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has reacted to Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin's announcement about the use of an Oreshnik medium-range missile against Ukraine. Source: Zelenskyy on X (Twitter) Quote: "Today, Putin has admitted taking the second step this year towards escalating and expanding this war. A new ballistic missile was used. Putin struck our city of Dnipro – one of the largest cities in Ukraine. This is a clear and severe escalation in the scale and brutality of this war - a cynical violation of the UN Charter by Russia. Let me emphasise: this is already Russia’s second step towards escalation this year. The first such step was involving North Korea in the war against Ukraine with a contingent of at least 11,000 soldiers." Details: The president said that Putin has taken both of these steps while ignoring global calls to avoid escalation. "He disregards calls from China, Brazil, European countries, the US and other countries," Zelenskyy stated. The president also recalled that Ukraine has used long-range weapons before, which is not a new development. Quote: "And we have every right to do so under international law. Our right to self-defence is the same as that of any other nation. When Russian missiles hit our cities, when Iranian-made Shahed drones attack Ukraine every night, when a North Korean contingent is deployed on our border, Putin is not only prolonging the war—he is spitting in the face of those in the world who genuinely want peace to be restored. The world must respond. Right now, there is no strong reaction from the world. Putin is very sensitive to such reactions. He is testing you, dear partners. It is clear to everyone who the sole culprit of this war is – who started it on 24 February and who continues to pour all resources into its continuation. He must be stopped. A lack of tough reactions to Russia’s actions sends a message that such behaviour is acceptable. This is what Putin is doing." Support UP or become our patron !
In a dynamic and rapidly evolving environment, leadership transcends traditional paradigms. It requires adaptability, foresight and a deep understanding of the unique challenges and opportunities shaping our country’s socioeconomic landscape. As the Philippines navigates the crossroads of technological innovation, environmental sustainability, workforce transformation and geopolitical shifts, leaders must guide their organizations and communities toward a resilient and prosperous future. The Philippines has emerged as one of the most dynamic economies in East Asia and the Pacific. With a growth rate of 6 percent in the first half of this year, it is among the top performers in the region. Rapid technological advancements, reshaping industries and creating new growth pathways underpin this robust economic performance. The integration of artificial intelligence, blockchain and digital platforms has revolutionized sectors, such as finance, health care, education, transport and logistics, offering unprecedented opportunities for innovation and efficiency. However, the swift pace of technological change also presents challenges, particularly in terms of workforce readiness and digital infrastructure sufficiency. Leaders must invest in upskilling initiatives to enable employees to survive and thrive in a digital economy. Moreover, fostering a culture of continuous learning and adaptability is essential to navigate the complexities of technological transformation. The Philippines is acutely vulnerable to the impacts of climate change. Frequent typhoons, rising sea levels and environmental degradation pose significant threats to communities and economic stability. Recognizing this, the government and the private sector must increasingly prioritize sustainability initiatives to mitigate environmental risks and promote resilience. Leaders are now tasked with integrating sustainable practices into their organizational strategies, aligning business objectives with environmental stewardship. Such action involves adopting renewable energy sources, implementing eco-friendly supply chain practices, and engaging in corporate social responsibility programs that address environmental concerns. By championing sustainability, leaders contribute to preserving natural resources and enhancing their organizations’ reputations and long-term viability. The Philippine workforce is undergoing a significant transformation, driven by its youthful demographics. With 28 percent of the population aged 10 to 24, our country enjoys a considerable labor market advantage. This demographic profile offers both opportunities and challenges, compelling leaders to unlock the potential of a young and rapidly evolving workforce. The rise of remote work, the gig economy and the integration of multigenerational teams necessitate reevaluating traditional management approaches. Leaders must cultivate inclusive environments that value diverse perspectives and foster collaboration across generational divides. Adopting flexible work arrangements, promoting work-life balance and investing in employee well-being are critical strategies for recruiting and keeping top talents. The Philippines’ strategic location in Southeast Asia is at the center of complex geopolitical dynamics, particularly concerning territorial disputes in the South China Sea. The government’s efforts to balance relations with major powers, including the United States and China, require astute leadership to navigate diplomatic intricacies while safeguarding our national interests. Economic uncertainties, such as global trade tensions and fluctuating commodity prices, further underscore the need for resilient and adaptable leadership. Leaders must develop robust risk management frameworks, diversify markets and foster innovation to mitigate external shocks and sustain economic growth. The pressures of modern work, exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic, have brought mental health and well-being to the forefront of organizational priorities. Leaders in the Philippines are increasingly recognizing the importance of creating supportive work environments that prioritize employee well-being. Implementing mental health programs, providing access to counseling services and promoting a culture of openness and support are essential steps in addressing this critical issue. By prioritizing mental health, leaders enhance employee satisfaction and productivity and contribute to their organizations’ overall resilience and sustainability. To address these multifaceted challenges effectively, Philippine leaders are adopting new approaches that emphasize agility, inclusivity and purpose-driven strategies. Agile leadership: In an environment marked by rapid change, agile leadership enables organizations to adapt swiftly to emerging trends and challenges. This approach involves iterative decision-making, encouraging a continuous improvement culture and giving teams the freedom to innovate. Inclusive leadership: Embracing diversity and fostering inclusivity are vital for driving innovation and organizational success. Leaders must actively seek diverse perspectives, promote equitable opportunities and create environments where all employees feel valued and empowered. Stakeholder capitalism: Beyond shareholder-centric models, stakeholder capitalism considers the needs and interests of all stakeholders, including employees, customers, communities and the environment. This holistic approach aligns business success with societal well-being. Servant leadership: By prioritizing the needs of others and focusing on the growth and well-being of employees and communities, servant leaders build trust and foster a sense of purpose within their organizations. In the contemporary Philippine context, success is redefined to encompass financial performance, social impact, environmental sustainability and human development. Purpose-driven leadership: Organizations with a clear mission that aligns with societal values are better positioned to inspire loyalty and drive long-term success. Purpose-driven leaders articulate a vision that resonates with employees and stakeholders, fostering a shared commitment to meaningful goals. Sustainable growth: True success entails achieving economic growth that is environmentally sustainable and socially inclusive. Leaders must balance short-term gains with long-term objectives, ensuring that their organizations contribute positively to society and the planet. Employee engagement and well-being: Leaders must recognize that employees are the organization’s backbone and must invest in their development, well-being and engagement. They must also provide growth opportunities, promote work-life balance and establish an inclusive and encouraging work environment. Reputation and trust: In an era of transparency and accountability, an organization’s reputation is critical. Leaders must uphold ethical standards, demonstrate integrity and build stakeholder trust to sustain long-term success. As the Philippines continues to navigate the complexities of the modern era, leaders across sectors are called upon to embrace transformative approaches that align with the nation’s unique challenges and opportunities. By fostering innovation, championing sustainability, prioritizing employee well-being and navigating geopolitical dynamics with strategic insight, leaders can drive progress that benefits their organizations and society. The journey ahead requires a commitment to continuous learning, adaptability and a steadfast dedication to creating value that transcends traditional metrics of success. By leading with purpose, empathy and integrity, Philippine leaders have the opportunity to shape a future that is resilient, inclusive and prosperous for all. The grand spiritual gathering will take place from January 13 (Paush Poornima) to February 26 (Maha Shivratri) in Prayagraj. The Maha Kumbh is organised every 12 years. Addressing a press conference in Madhya Pradesh capital Bhopal, UP’s Minister for Jal Shakti and Flood Control Swatantra Dev Singh said the congregation will surpass the previous ones in grandeur and divine essence. The Prayagraj Maha Kumbh is expected to welcome over 450 million (45 crore) pilgrims, saints, ascetics, and tourists, he said, adding that the UP government has planned meticulously to make it a clean, healthy, safe and digital event. It will be a “single-use-plastic-free” Maha Kumbh, he said. About three lakh saplings have been planted across Prayagraj and they would be maintained even after the conclusion of the Mela, he said. A 100-bed hospital, two hospitals with 20 beds each and smaller hospitals with 8 beds have been set up. Besides, two 10-bed ICUs have been set up by the Army Hospital, he said. (AP) — An online spat between factions of Donald Trump's supporters over immigration and the tech industry has thrown internal divisions in his political movement into public display, previewing the fissures and contradictory views his coalition could bring to the White House. The rift laid bare the tensions between the newest flank of Trump's movement — wealthy members of the tech world including billionaire Elon Musk and fellow entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy and their call for more highly skilled workers in their industry — and people in Trump's Make America Great Again base who championed his hardline immigration policies. The debate touched off this week when Laura Loomer , a right-wing provocateur with a history of racist and conspiratorial comments, criticized Trump’s selection of Sriram Krishnan as an adviser on artificial intelligence policy in his coming administration. Krishnan favors the ability to bring more skilled immigrants into the U.S. Loomer declared the stance to be “not America First policy” and said the tech executives who have aligned themselves with Trump were doing so to enrich themselves. Much of the debate played out on the social media network X, which Musk owns. Loomer's comments sparked a back-and-forth with venture capitalist and former PayPal executive David Sacks , whom Trump has tapped to be the “White House A.I. & Crypto Czar." Musk and Ramaswamy, whom Trump has tasked with finding ways to cut the federal government , weighed in, defending the tech industry's need to bring in foreign workers. It bloomed into a larger debate with more figures from the hard-right weighing in about the need to hire U.S. workers, whether values in American culture can produce the best engineers, free speech on the internet, the newfound influence tech figures have in Trump's world and what his political movement stands for. Trump has not yet weighed in on the rift. His presidential transition team did not respond to questions about positions on visas for highly skilled workers or the debate between his supporters online. Instead, his team instead sent a link to a post on X by longtime adviser and immigration hard-liner Stephen Miller that was a transcript of a speech Trump gave in 2020 at Mount Rushmore in which he praised figures and moments from American history. Musk, the world's richest man who has grown remarkably close to the president-elect , was a central figure in the debate, not only for his stature in Trump's movement but his stance on the tech industry's hiring of foreign workers. Technology companies say H-1B visas for skilled workers, used by software engineers and others in the tech industry, are critical for hard-to-fill positions. But critics have said they undercut U.S. citizens who could take those jobs. Some on the right have called for the program to be eliminated, not expanded. Born in South Africa, Musk was once on an a H-1B visa himself and defended the industry's need to bring in foreign workers. “There is a permanent shortage of excellent engineering talent," he said in a post. “It is the fundamental limiting factor in Silicon Valley.” Trump's own positions over the years have reflected the divide in his movement. His tough immigration policies, including his pledge for a mass deportation, were central to his winning presidential campaign. He has focused on immigrants who come into the U.S. illegally but he has also sought curbs on legal immigration , including family-based visas. As a presidential candidate in 2016, Trump called the H-1B visa program “very bad” and “unfair” for U.S. workers. After he became president, Trump in 2017 issued a “Buy American and Hire American” executive order , which directed Cabinet members to suggest changes to ensure H-1B visas were awarded to the highest-paid or most-skilled applicants to protect American workers. Trump's businesses, however, have hired foreign workers, including waiters and cooks at his Mar-a-Lago club , and his social media company behind his Truth Social app has used the the H-1B program for highly skilled workers. During his 2024 campaign for president, as he made immigration his signature issue, Trump said immigrants in the country illegally are “poisoning the blood of our country" and promised to carry out the largest deportation operation in U.S. history. But in a sharp departure from his usual alarmist message around immigration generally, Trump told a podcast this year that he wants to give automatic green cards to foreign students who graduate from U.S. colleges. “I think you should get automatically, as part of your diploma, a green card to be able to stay in this country," he told the “All-In" podcast with people from the venture capital and technology world. Those comments came on the cusp of Trump's budding alliance with tech industry figures, but he did not make the idea a regular part of his campaign message or detail any plans to pursue such changes.
