His team, the Duluth Bulldogs, is struggling, and the idea of guys throwing pigskins at each other doesn’t appeal to enough people. Enter Carter “The Bullet” Rutherford, a WWI hero and star player for Princeton University, whom Dodge is convinced can save his team ... and the league. But a nosy reporter, Lexie Littleton (Zellweger) thinks Carter is full of baloney, and is determined to expose him, and ruin Dodge’s dream of playing pro football. Plenty of bad movies were made about the dangers of playing God, but one of the best was Splice , a 2009 sci-fi horror movie that stars two actors who aren’t normally associated with the genre: Oscar winners Adrien Brody ( The Pianist ) and Sarah Polley ( Women Talking ). They star as married scientists Clive and Elsa, who are secretly trying to create a female human-animal hybrid so they can extract the creature’s proteins for medical research. Major problems naturally arise when the creature, named Dren, forms a bond with the two, and rapidly mutates as she grows from an infant to adolescence in a matter of days. As Clive and Elsa’s employers grow suspicious, can they hide Dren from them and the world? And can Dren resist her growing urge to leave and explore her surroundings, possibly endangering the human race? Well, what do you think? Splice ‘s plot may seem obvious, but it takes several major detours, including one I’ve never quite seen in a sci-fi before. Both Brody and Polley elevate the material, and director Vincenzo Natali goes for broke in examining the perverse possibilities of playing with nature’s genes. Splice is streaming on Max . The Oscar-winning actress, still best known for her work in Bonnie and Clyde , Chinatown , and Network , has a reputation of being temperamental, with past conflicts with director Roman Polanski, actress Bette Davis, and playwright Andrew Lloyd Webber all contributing to her being labeled “difficult.” But as Faye reveals, in archival clips with her peers and her own candid interview that took place recently, she had her reasons. And that’s what makes Faye so fascinating to watch. This isn’t a documentary to whitewash her sins, but rather to explain them, own them, and recontextualize them. The result is a fascinating portrait of a women who wasn’t difficult as much as she was a perfectionist. If Mexico and Canada cooperate with the U.S. government under Trump’s leadership in securing our border from fentanyl and illegal migration , they will maintain their current access to U.S. markets. This is an example of what Treasury Secretary nominee Scott Bessent has described as escalating to de-escalate. It is Trump’s opening gambit in three-party negotiations over the shape of trade, border, and drug policies. The fact that the announcement of this policy came so early—two months before Trump’s inauguration—means that Trump is giving Mexico and Canada plenty of time to submit their counter-offers and reform their own policies to comply with the incoming administration’s goals. Trump’s ask is hardly onerous. Neither Mexico nor Canada has a strong self-interest in resisting U.S. border control or facilitating the fentanyl trade. Both have an extremely strong self-interest in maintaining their access to U.S. consumers. As Sara Eisen of CNBC pointed out , 77 percent of Canada’s exports and 83 percent of Mexico’s go to the United States . Mexico’s exports to the U.S. add up to nearly one-quarter of its gross domestic product. The initial reaction to Trump’s message from Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum is being viewed as a threat of retaliation if the U.S. imposes tariffs. “The phenomenon of migration or the consumption of drugs in the United States will not be dealt with by threats or with tariffs,” Sheinbaum wrote in a letter to Trump on Tuesday, which she read out at her daily press conference. “One tariff will come in response to another, and so on until we put shared companies at risk.” This is likely posturing for the domestic Mexican audience rather than a sign that Mexico will not negotiate with the Trump administration. But it may also be a test of Trump’s resolve. Trump may have to raise tariffs in order to show Sheinbaum that he really means business. Ultimately, however, we expect that Mexico and Canada will agree to terms that will allow them to avoid anything on the scale of 25 percent tariffs. Frank and Brighton head coach Fabian Hurzeler disagreed about the decision. “As I understand the rules, you can’t swing your arm to try to hit someone,” said Frank. “If you hit them or not, it’s a red, that’s the way I understand the rules.” Frank spoke to the match officials, including referee Andy Madley, about the flashpoint at full-time. “They haven’t seen the situation yet, not on TV afterwards,” said Frank. “To be fair to him, I think the angle can be tricky so that’s why you’ve got VAR.” Asked about Frank’s assessment, Hurzeler replied: “Interesting opinion. I see it completely different. “For me, it’s not a red card. He tried to get free from a person.” Brighton were booed off after their winless run was stretched to six top-flight games. Hurzeler thought the jeers at full-time were unfair. “The team doesn’t deserve that because in all the games we had in the last weeks they were all good, they were all intense, they were all where we thought we deserved more” said the German, whose team have lost to Fulham and Crystal Palace and drawn with Southampton, Leicester and West Ham in recent matches. “We try to work hard to satisfy our supporters, we try to give them what they deserve, we try to make them proud. “But the Premier League is tough. We know there will be (tough) periods we have to go through, especially with this young squad. “We try to stick together, find the positive and keep on going.” Brentford, who remain without a top-flight away win this term, had an early Yoane Wissa finish ruled out for offside following VAR intervention but barely threatened, despite an improved second-half showing. Frank, who is awaiting news on Flekken and defender Ben Mee, who also left the field injured, said: “I thought it was a fair point. “Brighton were better in the first half, no big, clearcut chances, and I thought we were better second half. “Overall, I’m happy with the performance, especially the way we defended. “We haven’t had too many clean sheets this season, so in that context I thought it was very impressive against a good Brighton team. “We know we have a lot of players out – we get two more injuries during the game. “The way the players showed their mentality and character and dug in was hugely impressive.”Eddie Howe insists “there is more to come” from Newcastle star Alexander Isak. The Swede is challenging for the crown of best striker in the world with his current scoring streak of 11 goals in 12 games... and rivals like Erling Haaland out of form. Isak has scored seven goals and made two assists in his last nine league games and Howe wants that form to continue to grab a rare win at Old Trafford on Monday. It is about Newcastle and he plays his part. “He is what you see on the pitch. He doesn’t get overly emotional which for a striker is a great quality because that coolness you see and calmness in front of goals is part of his personality, part of what he is. He seems to have an extra half a second when other players don’t. "With Alex the beauty of his attitude is that he wants to improve. We give him information and he is responsive. He is not a closed shop. He is in no way thinking he has arrived at a certain place. He knows he has to keep adding to his game. The challenge is great for him to keep scoring freely as he is now. Everyone else can say where he is in the pecking order of world football. "His game is in a good place at the moment. My job is to not sit back and appreciate that, my job is to try and find areas he can improve, push him towards that and never stop pushing him. He has all the ingredients in there and football never stops evolving and changing and he has to evolve with it.” Newcastle have won only once in 29 games at Old Trafford in the Premier League era, in 2013 with a Yohan Cabaye goal. Howe reckons the three away games in nine days, including a trip to Spurs and Arsenal , will define where they will finish this season, with Champions League places up for grabs. Howe added: “It is great for the Premier League. That you never quite know what will happen. Unpredictability brings excitement. The challenge for us is to be the team who is consistent, a team who can produce results when not expected. We are going into a run of games now which will really test us and will be one of the deciding factors on where we will finish. We go to some tough away grounds but we look forward to those and try to maintain our good form. “It will be down to our attitude firstly. Man U is a fixture we should try to attack and keep our rhythm and be the best version of ourselves.
