Not only does the story mostly revolve around a bar called Rocky’s, but Tory also creates a seasonal cocktail that’s dubbed a “Hanukkah on the Rocks” which also becomes the business’s new temporary name, so yeah, the title is pretty fitting! Our Take: Although it has been trying to diversify its filmography slowly but surely over the past few years, Hallmark still doesn’t have many Hanukkah movies. With that in mind, I think that the mere existence of this movie is a win for representation, and the writing also shows that care, research, and personal experience went into the portrayal of this Hanukkah story. Especially coming to this movie as someone who was raised Christian, there are plenty of things that may have felt unfamiliar, but that didn’t mean that as a viewer, I cared about them any less. After all, at the heart of Hanukkah on the Rocks is a story about community, tradition, and family, things that anyone can relate to. You don’t have to be Jewish to enjoy watching the festivities because both the characters at Rocky’s and the movie itself welcome everyone in with open arms. That being said, there are some critiques and gripes that I think viewers of any religion or creed could likely agree upon. First of all, it’s a bit ridiculous to suggest that there would be only one box of a specific Hanukkah candle in a city as big and diverse as Chicago, but hey, that’s just Hallmark movies for you, so we can give it a pass. However, a major part of any Hallmark movie tends to be the romance, and the one here between Tory and Jay was just okay. They had some genuinely enjoyable moments of interaction and chemistry, but these were weighed down by some especially cheesy moments and the somewhat two-dimensional nature of the characters, themselves. You’re telling me that Tory has lived in Chicago her entire life and has zero friends besides her Bubby? I know she’s a workaholic but that seems impossible! But I guess if she didn’t have time for her sister and nephew, she really didn’t have time for any friends, which is a bummer. Really, I just wish the characters were a little more fleshed out so they could feel a bit more real and therefore easier to invest in and connect to. Ultimately, the ensemble nature of this movie as well as the focus on celebrating Jewish culture and traditions help to make it feel worth watching for viewers of all backgrounds. I’m glad to see Hallmark go for something outside of their usual Christmas story, and I hope that they will continue to do so in the years ahead! Our Call: I wouldn’t say that Hanukkah on the Rocks is the most memorable or moving new holiday title streaming this year. Still, we can always use a new Hanukkah movie, especially one with as much genuine care for the traditions and spirit as this one seems to have. It’s just a nice and easy seasonal watch. While six years ago they found that these so-called SMC motor proteins make long loops in our DNA, they now discovered that these motors also put significant twists into the loops that they form. These findings help us better understand the structure and function of our chromosomes. They also provide insight into how disruption of twisted DNA looping can affect health -- for instance, in developmental diseases like 'cohesinopathies'. While six years ago they found that these so-called SMC motor proteins make long loops in our DNA, they now discovered that these motors also put significant twists into the loops that they form. These findings help us better understand the structure and function of our chromosomes.They also provide insight into how disruption of twisted DNA looping can affect health -- for instance, in developmental diseases like 'cohesinopathies'. The scientists published their findings in Science Advances. The struggle of our cells Imagine trying to fit two meters of rope into a space much smaller than the tip of a needle -- that's the challenge every cell in your body faces when packing its DNA into its tiny nucleus. To achieve this, nature employs ingenious strategies, like twisting the DNA into coils of coils, so-called 'supercoils' (see pictures for a visualisation) and wrapping it around special proteins for compact storage. Small DNA loops regulate chromosome functions However, compaction isn't enough. Cells also need to regulate the chromosome structure to enable its function. For example, when genetic information needs to be accessed, the DNA is locally read off. In particular when it's time for a cell to divide, the DNA must first unpack, duplicate, and then properly separate into two new cells. Specialised protein machines called SMC complexes (Structural Maintenance of Chromosomes) play a critical role in these processes. Just a few years ago, scientists at Delft and other places discovered that these SMC proteins are molecular motors that make long loops in our DNA, and that these loops are the key regulators of chromosome function. A new twist In the lab of Cees Dekker at TU Delft, postdocs Richard Janissen and Roman Bath now provide clues that help to crack this puzzle. They deloped a new way to use 'magnetic tweezers' by which they could watch individual SMC proteins make looping steps in DNA. Importantly, they were also able to resolve if the SMC protein would change the twist in the DNA. And strikingly, the team found that it did: the human SMC protein cohesin does indeed not only pull DNA into a loop, but also twists the DNA in a left-handed way by 0.6 turns in each step of creating the loop. A glimpse into the evolution of SMC proteins What's more, the team found that this twisting action isn't unique to humans. Similar SMC proteins in yeast behave the same way. Strikingly, all the various types of SMC proteins from human and yeast add the same amount of twist -- they turn DNA 0.6 times at every at every DNA loop extrusion step. This shows that the DNA extrusion and twisting mechanisms stayed the same for very long times during evolution. No matter whether DNA is looped in humans, yeast, or any other cell -- nature employs the same strategy. Essential clues These new findings will provide essential clues for resolving the molecular mechanism of this new type of motor. Additionally, they make clear that DNA looping also affects the supercoiling state of our chromosomes, which directly affects processes like gene expression. Finally, these SMC proteins are related to various diseases such as Cornelia de Lange Syndrome, and a better understanding of these processes is vital for tracking down the molecular origins of these serious illnesses. Some northerners are anxious for the Canada Post strike to end soon — including Molly Hayward. The 14-year-old from Iqaluit typically relies on Canada Post to deliver her glucose monitors and insulin pumps, equipment she needs to help manage her Type 1 diabetes. Molly's mother, Jen Hayward, calls it "incredibly frustrating." The glucose monitor shows Molly's blood sugar levels, and the pump gives her insulin every three minutes. Every time she eats, her monitor gives her a reading that she can enter into the pump, and it will adjust levels accordingly. If her levels are too low, an alert warning is sent to her phone. Jen says the equipment is extremely helpful. "Overall there's less of a health risk for her. Diabetics, Type 1 diabetics, if their blood sugars go too low, it's a very risky place to be. She can offset diabetic ketoacidosis, which can result in death and organ failure within hours," Jen said. Without the equipment, Molly would have to resort to more insulin injections, and have to wake through the night to check her blood sugar levels. Molly said that worrying about her access to the needed equipment "is kind of like anticipatory anxiety." As of right now, the family is resorting to asking friends to ship the equipment to them via cargo, which is more costly, or else Jen buys them when she's in Yellowknife. The family's current supply will last less than two months, and they're unsure what they will do after that if the strike continues that long. On Friday, federal Labour Minister Steven MacKinnon said he was sending the labour dispute between Canada Post and the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) to the Canada Industrial Relations Board. He said that if the board determines negotiations between the parties are at an impasse, it has been directed to order striking CUPW members back to work under the existing collective agreement until May 22, 2025. That means postal service could resume "as early next week," MacKinnon said. Northern communities hit hard The Canada Post strike began almost a month ago, and people in many northern and remote communities say they've been hit hard . Indigenous governments have called for the strike to end. Natan Obed, the president of Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami (ITK), a national organization representing Inuit across Canada, said that Inuit communities need Canada Post. "We don't have other options," he said. "UPS, FedEx, Purolator — all of these services, if they're available at all, they flow through arrangements with Canada Post. We're effectively cut off." The post office in Rankin Inlet, Nunavut. (Noel Kaludjak/CBC News) Obed said that Canada Post should be considered an essential service. "Right now, imagine if you live in a small community of 500 people and your one store doesn't stock a particular item that you need to care for your child, whether it's formula or any other essential item," he said. "The only way that you are able to get that essential item to your family is to use Canada Post and to buy online or to have it shipped to your community." Mayor Wayne Gregory in Cambridge Bay, Nunavut, says the strike has a big impact on people in his community. "We are so remote," he said. "The only way in and out is by airline." The strike has forced the community to come together, he says, with people relying on others who travel for things like medical appointments to bring items back home with them. "Everybody's helping as much as they can, wherever they can, and we're just waiting to see where things go from here."

While her intention to explain the principal’s choice may have been well-meaning, the decision to feature this song — which has become associated with the current Middle East conflict — detracted from the solemn purpose of the day and risked creating division rather than unity. I was surprised to see that Dr. Sherazi chose to contextualize the principal’s decision in this way, given the concerted effort we make in our shared work to leave politics outside the classroom. Together, we have focused on fostering understanding, eliminating hate and emphasizing shared values — principles that are compromised when political narratives are introduced into solemn commemorations like Remembrance Day. Remembrance Day is not merely a reflection on war; it is a day to honour those who gave their lives to secure peace and the freedoms we enjoy as Canadians. It is a time to come together as a nation, transcending individual narratives to focus on shared values and the sacrifices made by generations past. While it is important to ensure all students feel included, it is equally important to maintain the integrity of the occasion. Dr. Sherazi’s article attempts to frame the principal’s intentions as an effort to promote inclusivity, but I question why she has taken on the role of justifying his choice. Educators consistently make the conscious decision to leave their politics at the door before entering the classroom. This approach ensures the focus remains on fostering unity, not division. The inclusion of this song, however well-meant, contradicted the very principles that underpin these efforts. Sir Robert Borden High School is home to a large number of Jewish students, some of whom have experienced the trauma of antisemitic incidents. Many are also grappling with the recent atrocities of Oct. 7, 2023, when loved ones were murdered, raped or taken hostage during brutal attacks in Israel. To introduce a song that has become a symbol in protests related to the Middle East conflict, without consideration for the impact on these students, was an act of insensitivity. Jewish students at Sir Robert Borden deserved the same consideration and respect as any other group. True inclusivity does not mean prioritizing one narrative while ignoring others; it means creating space for all voices to be heard. Remembrance Day, however, is not the occasion for political messaging or divisive symbolism. It is a time to honour the sacrifices that unite us as Canadians, rather than highlighting the conflicts that divide us. As educators, we have a responsibility to teach lessons rooted in respect, understanding, and shared values. In the workshops I conduct with Dr. Sherazi, we emphasize the dangers of hatred and the importance of unity. These sessions deliberately avoid political contexts, focusing instead on the universal principles that allow us to build bridges and foster mutual respect. Bringing contentious political symbols into a Remembrance Day ceremony is antithetical to these principles. It risks fueling division rather than fostering understanding and detracts from the lessons of sacrifice and freedom that Remembrance Day seeks to impart. Those who fought for these ideals made unimaginable sacrifices, and it is our duty to honour their memory by upholding those values in our schools and communities. It is not a platform for political statements or a time to import contemporary conflicts into our shared spaces. It is a time to remember those who gave their lives for the peace and freedoms we enjoy today and to ensure that their sacrifices are not forgotten. By keeping politics out of the classroom and focusing on shared values, we can foster an environment where all students feel respected, included and united in their commitment to the ideals that Remembrance Day represents. LOS ANGELES (AP) — OpenAI CEO Sam Altman is planning to make a $1 million personal donation to President-Elect Donald Trump's inauguration fund, joining a number of tech companies and executives who are working to improve their relationships with the incoming administration. A spokesperson for OpenAI confirmed the move on Friday. The announcement comes one day after Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, said it donated $1 million to the same fund. Amazon also said it plans to donate $1 million. “President Trump will lead our country into the age of AI, and I am eager to support his efforts to ensure America stays ahead," Altman said in a statement. Altman, who is in a legal dispute with rival Elon Musk, has said he is “not that worried” about the Tesla CEO's influence in the incoming administration. Trump is putting Musk, the world’s richest man, and Vivek Ramaswamy , an entrepreneur and former Republican presidential candidate, in charge of the new Department of Government Efficiency, or DOGE, which is an outside advisory committee that will work with people inside the government to reduce spending and regulations. Musk, an early OpenAI investor and board member, sued the artificial intelligence company earlier this year alleging that the maker of ChatGPT betrayed its founding aims of benefiting the public good rather than pursuing profits.
