US proposes voluntary guidelines for self-driving vehicles in waning days of Biden administrationTesla is issuing a major recall on nearly 700,000 vehicles, including its 2024 Cybertruck. In a report Tuesday, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) said three Tesla models are affected by the issue: certain 2024 Cybertruck, 2017-2025 Model 3, and 2020-2025 Model Y vehicles. The pressure monitoring system warning light on the vehicles might fail to warn drivers about low tire pressure. “On affected vehicles, upon detection of a malfunction with the tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS), the TPMS malfunction telltale does not persist between drive cycles where the vehicle is off or asleep between the drive cycles,” the recall report said. At a 2023 event at the Tesla headquarters in Austin, CEO Elon Musk praised the strength of the Cybertruck. “The apocalypse can come along any moment, and here at Tesla we have the best in apocalypse technology,” the tech mogul said. But the latest recall is the seventh this year for Cybertruck. Eight more recalls have affected other Tesla vehicles, bringing the 2024 total for the company to 15. | In February, two million vehicles were recalled due to the their safety warning signals appearing in too small a font size. Five months later, the company recalled 1.8 million vehicles after it received reports of “unintended hood opening events.” And just last month, it issued a recall on 2,400 vehicles over a drive-inverter issue that the company said “may cause a loss of drive power to the wheels.” In December of last year, Tesla issued another major recall , too, over a serious auto-pilot issue that the NHTSA suspected led to multiple crashes—some which caused deaths. At the time, it recalled 2,031,220 vehicles, all of which had the defect. The official recall report explained that if Autopilot was engaged the driver is still “responsible for the vehicle’s movement with their hands on the steering wheel at all times, remaining attentive to surrounding road conditions, and intervening (e.g., steer, brake, accelerate, or apply the stalk) as needed to maintain safe operation.” Prior to the string of recalls, Tesla was plagued by Cybertruck design and quality issues , which caused the release date for the vehicle to be pushed back by two years. Adrian Clarke, a professional car designer previously told Fast Company that the issues were predictable. “As soon as we saw [the Cybertruck], everyone I know in the industry started laughing. We just thought there is no way they’re gonna be able to get that into production.” In regard to the latest recall, the automaker is providing a free software update to owners to address the issue and said notification letters will be sent to drivers by Feb. 15, 2025.

The official Korean Central News Agency said that Kim and Belousov reached "a satisfactory consensus" on boosting strategic partnership and defending each country's sovereignty, security interests and international justice in the face of the rapidly changing international security environments in a Friday meeting. Kim said that North Korea "will invariably support the policy of the Russian Federation to defend its sovereignty and territorial integrity from the imperialists' moves for hegemony," KCNA said. North Korea has supported Russia's invasion of Ukraine, calling it a defensive response to what both Moscow and Pyongyang call NATO's "reckless" eastward advance and U.S.-led moves to stamp out Russia's position as a powerful state. Kim slammed a U.S. decision earlier in November to let Ukraine strike targets inside Russia with U.S.-supplied longer-range missiles as a direct intervention in the conflict. He called recent Russian strikes on Ukraine "a timely and effective measure" to demonstrate Russia's resolve, KCNA said. According to U.S., Ukrainian and South Korean assessments, North Korea has sent more than 10,000 troops to Russia, and some of them have already begun engaging in combat on the frontlines. The U.S., South Korea and others say North Korea has also shipped artillery systems, missiles and other conventional weapons to replenish Russia's exhausted weapons inventory. Both North Korea and Russia haven't formally confirmed the North Korean troops' movements and have steadfastly denied reports of weapons shipments. South Korea, the U.S. and their partners are concerned that Russia could give North Korea advanced weapons technology in return, including help to build more powerful nuclear missiles. Last week, South Korean national security adviser Shin Wonsik told a local SBS TV program that that Seoul assessed that Russia has provided air defense missile systems to North Korea. Belousov also met North Korean Defense Minister No Kwang Chol on Friday. The team will use Ferrari engines its first two years until GM has a Cadillac engine built for competition in time for the 2028 season. Towriss is the the CEO and president of Group 1001 and entered motorsports via Andretti's IndyCar team when he signed on financial savings platform Gainbridge as a sponsor. Grid expansion in F1 is both infrequent and often unsuccessful. Four teams were granted entries in 2010 that should have pushed the grid to 13 teams and 26 cars for the first time since 1995. One team never made it to the grid and the other three had vanished by 2017. There is only one American team on the current F1 grid — owned by California businessman Gene Haas — but it is not particularly competitive and does not field American drivers. Andretti's dream was to field a truly American team with American drivers. The fight to add this team has been going on for three-plus years, and F1 initially denied the application despite approval from F1 sanctioning body FIA. The existing 10 teams, who have no voice in the matter, also largely opposed expansion because of the dilution in prize money and the billions of dollars they've already invested in the series. Andretti in 2020 tried and failed to buy the existing Sauber team. From there, he applied for grid expansion and partnered with GM, the top-selling manufacturer in the United States. The inclusion of GM was championed by the FIA and president Mohammed Ben Sulayem, who said Michael Andretti's application was the only one of seven applicants to meet all required criteria to expand F1's current grid. "I am fully supportive of the efforts made by the FIA, Formula 1, GM and the team to maintain dialogue and work towards this outcome of an agreement in principle to progress this application." Despite the FIA's acceptance of Andretti and General Motors from the start, F1 wasn't interested in Andretti — but did want GM. At one point, F1 asked GM to find another team to partner with besides Andretti. GM refused and F1 said it would revisit the Andretti application if and when Cadillac had an engine ready to compete. "Formula 1 has maintained a dialogue with General Motors, and its partners at TWG Global, regarding the viability of an entry following the commercial assessment and decision made by Formula 1 in January 2024," F1 said in a statement. "Over the course of this year, they have achieved operational milestones and made clear their commitment to brand the 11th team GM/Cadillac, and that GM will enter as an engine supplier at a later time. Formula 1 is therefore pleased to move forward with this application process." It’s time to start emptying the notebook following the Fall Meeting of the American Geophysical Union, which happened from Dec. 9-13, 2024 in Washington, D.C. More than 25,000 scientists shared their work during those five days. Here is a sampling. Where have beavers been? Neve Baker of the University of Minnesota uses ancient traces of DNA in pond sediments to determine if beavers have lived in a place. Last year, she found signs that beavers were present 7,500 years ago in a pond within Grand Teton National Park in Wyoming. Beavers don’t live there now. California Department of Fish and Wildlife officials are interested in stocking some areas with beavers to help restore wetlands and provide more fire resiliency. Baker hopes to visit Alaska in 2025 and sample northern lakes. Baker would like to try her technique to see when beavers may have been present in extreme northern wetlands thousands of years ago. A mysterious bump on the Alaska sea floor. Kendal Hobbs of Oregon State University stood by her poster one afternoon with the hope that educated passers-by could help her identify a 400-foot lump she and others noticed on the sea floor beneath the Gulf of Alaska. The bump might be a seamount (an underwater mountain often formed by a volcano), a mound caused by earthquake action, or maybe even debris kicked up by a meteorite strike. She and her colleagues imaged the underwater hill while aboard the University of Alaska Fairbanks research ship Sikuliaq in summer 2024. Those who visited Hobbs’ poster were also a bit puzzled. “We have no idea what it is — that’s what makes it a good story,” said Sean Gulick of the University of Texas at Austin. By the end of several hours talking with passers-by in the massive poster hall at the Walter Washington Convention Center, Hobbs had not come up with an answer for what she calls “Sikuliaq Knoll.” “Everyone I’ve talked to for the past four hours has a different idea,” she said. “I came away with a lot less clarity.” Smoke ’em if you got ’em. Living in downtown Fairbanks, Alaska, is like smoking a cigarette a day during the town’s worst air-quality days in midwinter. Winter temperature inversions — in which warmer air sits atop stagnant cold air — create conditions during which Fairbanks air is thick with tiny particles, reported Manabu Shiraiwa of the University of California, Irvine. Shiraiwa visited Fairbanks in January and February of 2022 to sample the city’s air during a campaign with UAF researchers. Team members felt temperatures of minus 40 as they monitored air outside in downtown Fairbanks. They also measured air inside local homes. Team members were able to detect when people fired up their woodstoves during extreme cold weather and how particulate matter from cars increased in overall percentage when the temperature warmed. Though not as bad as air quality in urban China, Fairbanks air was worse than most cities in the United States. “Fairbanks people — even if they were not smoking — were breathing the equivalent of (up to) one cigarette daily,” Shiraiwa said of the worst days. He also said that indoors often offered no escape due to particles that escaped wood and pellet stoves. “Indoor air quality can be even worse than outdoors when people are burning wood,” Shiraiwa said. ANN ARBOR, Mich. — Michigan's defense of the national championship has fallen woefully short. The Wolverines started the season ranked No. 9 in the AP Top 25, making them the third college football team since 1991 to be ranked worse than seventh in the preseason poll after winning a national title. Michigan (6-5, 4-4 Big Ten) failed to meet those modest expectations, barely becoming eligible to play in a bowl and putting the program in danger of losing six or seven games for the first time since the Brady Hoke era ended a decade ago. The Wolverines potentially can ease some of the pain with a win against rival and second-ranked Ohio State (10-1, 7-1, No. 2 CFP) on Saturday in the Horseshoe, but that would be a stunning upset. Ohio State is a 21 1/2-point favorite, according to the BetMGM Sportsbook, and that marks just the third time this century that there has been a spread of at least 20 1/2 points in what is known as "The Game." Michigan coach Sherrone Moore doesn't sound like someone who is motivating players with an underdog mentality. "I don't think none of that matters in this game," Moore said Monday. "It doesn't matter the records. It doesn't matter anything. The spread, that doesn't matter." How did Michigan end up with a relative mess of a season on the field, coming off its first national title since 1997? Winning it all with a coach and star player contemplating being in the NFL for the 2024 season seemed to have unintended consequences for the current squad. The Wolverines closed the College Football Playoff with a win over Washington on Jan. 8; several days later quarterback J.J. McCarthy announced he was skipping his senior season; and it took more than another week for Jim Harbaugh to bolt to coach the Los Angeles Chargers. In the meantime, most quality quarterbacks wanting to transfer had already enrolled at other schools and Moore was left with lackluster options. Davis Warren beat out Alex Orji to be the team's quarterback for the opener and later lost the job to Orji only to get it back again. No matter who was under center, however, would've likely struggled this year behind an offensive line that sent six players to the NFL. The Wolverines lost one of their top players on defense, safety Rod Moore, to a season-ending injury last spring and another one, preseason All-America cornerback Will Johnson, hasn't played in more than a month because of an injury. The Buckeyes are not planning to show any mercy after losing three straight in the series. "We're going to attack them," Ohio State defensive end Jack Sawyer said. "We know they're going to come in here swinging, too, and they've still got a good team even though the record doesn't indicate it. This game, it never matters what the records are." While a win would not suddenly make the Wolverines' season a success, it could help Moore build some momentum a week after top-rated freshman quarterback Bryce Underwood flipped his commitment from LSU to Michigan. A recent review paper dived into these developments and summarized the cutting-edge research on inorganic solid electrolytes (ISEs) used in ASSBs. Researchers explored how oxides, sulfides, hydroborates, antiperovskites and halides play a pivotal role in powering next-generation -batteries. These materials are not only used as electrolytes but also as catholytes and interface layers, which enhance battery performance and safety.
