After a thrilling conference championship Saturday and a drawn-out reveal show Sunday, the inaugural 12-team College Football Playoff field is set. The first true tournament in FBS history has plenty to love -- and elements to loathe. What Went Right: Unique opening-round matchups Whether the first round proves to be more competitive than the four-team Playoff's often lopsided semifinal matchups remains to be seen. Until then, there is at least intrigue in the historic rarity of the four pairings. One opening-round matchup -- ACC automatic qualifier Clemson at Texas -- is a first-time encounter between two programs that combine for seven claimed national championships. Of the other three, the most recent contest occurred in 1996 when Tennessee topped Ohio State in the Citrus Bowl. The Vols and Buckeyes meet as the No. 9 and No. 8 seeds at Ohio State's Horseshoe, with the winner advancing to face top overall seed Oregon. SMU, a perhaps surprising final at-large selection given the Mustangs' dearth of high-profile wins, meets Penn State for the third time ever and first since 1978. The Nittany Lions scored a 26-21 come-from-behind win in Happy Valley, where they will again host SMU. The Penn State victory ended a 30-year stalemate after the first and only meeting in the 1948 Cotton Bowl produced a 13-13 tie. Here's hoping the third part of a 76-year trilogy is as closely contested as the initial two. Meanwhile, the matchup with the most previous installments is the closest in proximity -- less than 200 miles separate in-state counterparts Indiana and Notre Dame -- and the most lopsided. The Fighting Irish and Hoosiers last played in 1991, with Notre Dame's 49-27 win marking its sixth straight victory by multiple scores. Indiana's last win in the series came in 1950, a 20-7 Hoosiers victory in Bloomington. What Went Right: Boise State's big opportunity Although not the first outsider to reach or win a Bowl Championship Series game, Boise State's 2007 Fiesta Bowl victory over Oklahoma was arguably the most pivotal moment in building support for outsiders to compete for the national championship. The Broncos spent two decades knocking on the door, beginning with their perfect 2004 regular season, extending through two Fiesta Bowl wins, and withstanding the heartbreak of late-season losses in 2010 and 2011. The celebration in response to Boise State being part of the bracket -- and not just in, but as the No. 3 seed with a bye into the quarterfinals -- marked a culmination of generations of effort for just this opportunity. What Went Right: ‘Football weather' comes to the postseason From the birth of the bowl system with the first-ever Rose Bowl Game, college football's postseason has resided primarily in warm-weather destinations. This makes sense for the original purpose of bowl games as showcases and celebrations of a team's regular-season performance, but less so for the goal of crowning a national champion. After decades of playing what often amounted to road games in the postseason, northern teams get their opportunity to host. Three of the four first-round contests are in such climates -- though Indiana won't be particularly disadvantaged by weather when playing Notre Dame in South Bend. With average December highs in Pennsylvania in the 30s, SMU will need its heaters on the sideline at Penn State's Beaver Stadium. The more intriguing trip, however, is Tennessee's to Ohio State. Longtime college football fans know the arguments about SEC teams playing in Big Ten country late in the year. Pitting two high-quality teams from the two leagues head-to-head in such conditions is a highlight of this new postseason system. And, given Tennessee and Ohio State have two of the nation's best defenses, expect a style of play befitting what is often described as football weather. What Went Wrong: More teams means more politicking When Mack Brown seemingly spent as much time on TV campaigning in 2004 as that year's presidential candidates, George W. Bush and John Kerry, his Texas Longhorns were among a small collection of teams vying for BCS bids. With the 12-team Playoff opening the top postseason opportunities to as many as 20 teams realistically, the political campaign ads that mercilessly ended in early November were replaced by the politicking of college football figures. Iowa State athletic director Jamie Pollard spent last week taking shots at SMU and other programs over strength of schedule -- a point neglecting that the Cyclones' losses came to unranked Texas Tech and sub-.500 Kansas. Arizona State's thorough dismantling of Iowa State in the Big 12 Championship Game solved that debate at the proverbial ballot box. However, brace yourself for an offseason of recount demands coming out of the SEC. Alabama's exclusion at 9-3, while 11-2 SMU landed the final at-large spot, is sure to play into the same controversy that South Carolina coach Shane Beamer leaned into last week. Beamer told The State (Columbia, S.C.) last week that his program may consider changing its nonconference scheduling in response to its seemingly inevitable Playoff snub. It's an odd position, given South Carolina's three losses all came in-conference, and the Gamecocks' nonleague slate included sub-.500 teams Old Dominion, Akron and FCS Wofford. But then again, how often are political campaign pitches rooted in logic? What Went Wrong: Quantity over quality? A more salient position in Beamer's case for South Carolina is that the Gamecocks scored quality wins during a season-ending, six-game streak. With its Rivalry Week defeat of Clemson, South Carolina added a victory over a Playoff qualifier to complement victories over Texas A&M and Missouri. Alabama, meanwhile, boasts wins over No. 2 overall seed Georgia and that same South Carolina team in contention. SMU's resume might be the most likely to draw ire, given the Mustangs received the last at-large berth. However, SMU beat nine- and eight-win Duke and Louisville, with two losses by a combined six points. Indiana should be the more contentious at-large choice, with the Hoosiers beating only one team that finished above .500: 7-5 Michigan. Indiana's only other matchup with an above-.500 opponent was a 38-15 blowout at Ohio State. That's something Alabama and South Carolina have in common with Indiana, as all three teams lost in routs. Alabama dropped a 24-3 decision late in the season at Oklahoma that presumably doomed the Crimson Tide's chances, while South Carolina lost to Ole Miss 27-3. To that end, there are arguments to be made for and against every team that was on the bubble. No system will ever appease all parties. What Went Wrong: Seeding conundrum Much of the Playoff's very existence flies in the face of college football tradition. One facet of how the field was set that upholds tradition in its own small way is rewarding teams for winning their conferences by reserving the four first-round byes for league champions. When this format was implemented, however, the committee could not have envisioned that two of the top five conference champions would not be ranked in the top 10. Because three-loss Clemson survived a furious SMU comeback in the ACC championship game, and Arizona State caught fire after underwhelming losses to Texas Tech and Cincinnati to win a weak Big 12, the committee was in the unusual position of having to slot a non-power conference champion and double-digit-ranked team in a top-four spot. This first edition of the Playoff seems likely to be the last to use this format, even if this scenario seems like an outlier. --Kyle Kensing, Field Level MediaNonereview bet365

How major US stock indexes fared Wednesday, 12/11/2024ROME (AP) — Robert Lewandowski joined Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi as the only players in history with 100 or more goals. But is on a faster pace than anyone by boosting his total to 46 goals at age 24 on Tuesday. Still, Haaland's brace wasn't enough for Manchester City in a 3-3 draw with Feyenoord that extended the Premier League champion's winless streak to six matches. Lewandowski’s early penalty kick started Barcelona off to a 3-0 win over previously unbeaten Brest to move into second place in the new single-league format. The Poland striker added goal No. 101 in second-half stoppage time. Ronaldo leads the all-time scoring list with 140 goals and Messi is next with 129. But neither Ronaldo nor Messi play in the Champions League anymore following moves to Saudi Arabia and the United States, respectively. “It’s a nice number,” Lewandowski said. “In the past I didn’t think I could score more than 100 goals in the Champions League. I’m in good company alongside Cristiano and Messi.” The 36-year-old Lewandowski required 125 matches to reach the century mark, two more than Messi (123) and 12 fewer than Ronaldo (137). Barcelona also got a second-half score from Dani Olmo. The top eight finishers in the standings advance directly to the round of 16 in March. Teams ranked ninth to 24th go into a knockout playoffs round in February, while the bottom 12 teams are eliminated. Haaland converted a first-half penalty to eclipse Messi as the youngest player to reach 45 goals then scored City's third after the break to raise his total to 46 goals in 44 games. Ilkay Gundogan had City's second. But then Feyenoord struck back with goals from Anis Hadj Moussa, Santiago Gimenez and David Hancko. Inter Milan beat Leipzig 1-0 with an own goal to move atop the standings with 13 points, one more than Barcelona and Liverpool, which faces Real Madrid on Wednesday. The Serie A champion is the only club that hasn't conceded a goal. Bayern Munich beat Paris Saint-Germain 1-0 — the same score from the 2020 final between the two teams. PSG ended with 10 men and remained in the elimination zone. The French powerhouse has struggled in Europe after Kylian Mbappe’s move to Real Madrid. Kim Min-jae’s first-half header was enough for Bayern, especially after Ousmane Dembelé was sent off in the 56th with his second yellow. Atalanta moved within two points of the lead with a 6-1 win at Young Boys. Charles De Ketelaere scored two and assisted on three other goals for Atalanta. Also, Arsenal kept red-hot striker Viktor Gyokeres quiet in a 5-1 win over Sporting Lisbon; and Germany star Florian Wirtz scored two goals and was involved in two more as Bayer Leverkusen boosted its chances of finishing in the top eight with a 5-0 rout of Salzburg. AC Milan followed up its win at Real Madrid with a 3-2 victory at last-place Slovan Bratislava in an early match. Christian Pulisic put the seven-time champion ahead midway through the first half by finishing off a counterattack. Then Rafael Leao restored the Rossoneri’s advantage after Tigran Barseghyan had equalized for Bratislava and Tammy Abraham quickly added another. Nino Marcelli scored with a long-range strike in the 88th for Bratislava, which ended with 10 men. Bratislava has lost all five of its matches. Argentina World Cup winner Julian Alvarez scored twice and Atletico Madrid routed Sparta Prague 6-0 in the other early game. Alvarez scored with a free kick 15 minutes in and Marcos Llorente added a long-range strike before the break. Alvarez finished off a counterattack early in the second half after being set up by substitute Antoine Griezmann, who then marked his 100th Champions League game by getting on the scoresheet himself. Angel Correa added a late brace for Atletico, which earned its biggest away win in Europe. Atletico beat Paris Saint-Germain in the previous round and extended its winning streak across all competitions to six matches. A question and answer session with Founder and CEO of City Friends Club, Anna Gubareva We aim to launch our first initiatives that promote conscious consumption and waste reduction. One such project is the Coffee Friends Club, which encourages environmentally responsible behavior. Recently, we completed a pilot project Graffiti Friends Club in Limassol. This initiative involved creating 10 unique graffiti artworks on transformer boxes with local artists, achieving several important goals: The project was a great success, and we plan to expand it to other cities with the support of the Electricity Authority of Cyprus, as it has proven to benefit urban spaces. We are also developing a mobile app to simplify and automate participation in our initiatives. In the future, we hope the app will run independently across cities, requiring minimal resources from our organisation. Our primary aim is to launch daily street cleaning, carried out by professional teams. We plan to start with small teams of three people and gradually scale up to create a clean and welcoming urban environment. The Larnaca Municipality has been very supportive, providing key resources such as a car, a driver and parking space, which has allowed us to launch successfully. They also help promote our project through information campaigns. This support is invaluable, as it helps us involve local residents in our activities. While many Cypriots are already participating, we hope this collaboration will help us attract even more volunteers. In Paphos, we have initiated regular monthly cleanups. Previously, these were coordinated from Limassol, which made it harder. Now we’re ready to expand, adding corporate cleanups to our activities. We’ve hired our first local staff member in Paphos and got a car, which makes managing projects on-site much easier. The school is a key partner in our initiatives. Along with providing financial support, they fully align with our values and actively contribute to educating the younger generation. As a core partner, we are creating a customised sponsorship package that includes events and activities designed to match the school’s interests and needs. This helps strengthen our collaboration and ensures the most effective implementation of our shared goals. One of our key indicators is the number of people participating in cleanups and other events. More participants mean stronger community engagement and greater awareness of environmental issues. Another important metric is the amount of waste collected and removed, providing a clear measure of the cleanup efforts impact. We also value social feedback: how residents and tourists respond to our initiatives through social media posts, participation requests, or an increase in volunteer numbers. We hope these efforts will lead to a noticeable reduction in waste, reflecting the development of a culture of cleanliness among both residents and visitors. Additionally, we can’t overlook another important indicator – the growth in the number of partners, sponsors and organisations willing to support or collaborate with us. I won’t list all the environmental problems faced by cities in Cyprus but will focus on those we are addressing. Larnaca and Paphos share the same challenges as other cities on the island. These are popular tourist destinations, and in recent years, Cyprus has experienced a significant influx of new residents. While Cyprus strives to adapt as a hospitable country, not all sectors are keeping up with the increased demand. One of the main problems is the inefficient waste management system, which is unable to keep up with the new reality. The growing number of tourists and residents has worsened the waste problem, particularly in popular recreational areas. Tourists and locals often leave trash in public spaces, on beaches and along roads, which not only spoils the appearance of the cities but also harms the ecosystem. To tackle this issue, all cities in Cyprus need stricter cleanliness controls, the installation of additional waste collection infrastructure (such as bins and containers) and efforts to foster a culture of responsible waste disposal among residents and visitors.

NoneThe Liberal government is pulling out the federal wallet to put more money into people’s pockets over the holidays, but its recently announced affordability measures create winners and losers. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced on Thursday that the federal government will remove the goods and services tax on a slew of items for two months, starting Dec. 14. But in provinces where the provincial and federal sales taxes are blended together into a harmonized sales tax, Canadians will get a larger break. The federal government also plans to send $250 cheques to Canadians who were working in 2023 and earned up to $150,000. That means Canadians who were not working in 2023, including those who were receiving social assistance or were in retirement, will not be sent a cheque in April. In the House of Commons on Friday, NDP MP Peter Julian called the government out for not including Canadians with fixed incomes. “Why are Liberals excluding seniors and people with disabilities from the real help they need this holiday season? Why won’t Liberals help them, too?” Julian asked during question period. At a news conference on Friday, Trudeau said that the federal government has already stepped up to help the most vulnerable Canadians and that it is now time to give a hand to workers. “Over the past number of years, we have been extraordinarily present in helping the most vulnerable Canadians,” Trudeau said, mentioning the boost to old-age security for seniors aged 75 and older and the Canada Child Benefit. “But as I travel across the country, I do regularly hear from working Canadians who are having trouble making ends meet, but saying, ‘look, I don’t have kids. I’m not a senior yet, and I’m facing challenges.’” The GST break, which is expected to cost the federal government $1.6 billion, will apply to a number of items including children’s clothing and shoes, toys, diapers, restaurant meals and beer and wine. It also applies to Christmas trees — both natural and artificial — along with a variety of snack foods and beverages, and video game consoles. Meanwhile, 18.7 million people will receive a check this spring, costing the government about $4.7 billion.Lewandowski joins Ronaldo and Messi in Champions League 100-goal club. UltraTech's move to pick up a stake in the Meghalaya-based cement firm is perceived as a pre-emptive move to block Adani Cements from making a similar move. It could also be the first step to acquire the company as it happened with India Cements, industry experts said. In June, when UltraTech had acquired a 23% stake in India Cements from investor RK Damani, the company had said it was only a financial investment. But, within months, it took over the business from N Srinivasan and family. One of the largest cement brands in northeast India, Star Cement is seen as a takeover target for national players. It has a 7.7 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) grinding capacity, 6.1 mtpa clinker capacity, up from 2.8 mtpa in FY24, a dealer network of close to 2,000, and a retailer network of over 12,500. It is also expanding to West Bengal and Bihar. Cement companies in the Northeast enjoy 1.5-2 times Ebitda per tonne compared to pan-Indian peers, experts said. "Owing to logistical constraints/hilly terrain, the Northeast market has been enjoying better pricing (higher by ₹1,000-1,200 per tonne) and in turn, profitability as compared to other regions," said Krupal Maniar, cement analyst with Antique Stock Broking. "Star's Ebitda is likely to almost double to ₹1,000 crore over the next four years, given 120% rise in its clinker capacity." Shares of UltraTech ended 0.45% lower on Friday at ₹11,406.15 on the BSE while that of Star Cement closed at ₹232, up 0.98%. Star Cement had reported an overall turnover of ₹2,910 crore in 2023-24. It has seven plants and a total workforce of 4,200. It plans to achieve a manufacturing capacity of 25 mtpa by 2030, as per the company's website. According to an investor presentation shared post-September quarter, the company commands a 26.5% market share in the Northeast market. Premium sales account for 10.6% of overall sales. Its sales volumes have seen compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 10% between FY19 and FY24 versus the industry average of 6%. The company has two upcoming units in the Silchar and Jorhat districts of Assam and has planned a capex of ₹380 crore for the second half of the current financial year. Georgia QB Carson Beck announces plan to enter NFL draft after season-ending elbow injury Georgia quarterback Carson Beck on Saturday announced his plans to enter the NFL draft, five days after having season-ending elbow surgery . (AP Photo/John Bazemore) Georgia quarterback Carson Beck on Saturday announced his plans to enter the NFL draft, five days after having season-ending elbow surgery . Beck, a fifth-year senior, made his NFL plans official on social media. He suffered a right elbow injury in the first half of the Bulldogs’ 22-19 overtime win over Texas in the Southeastern Conference championship game on Dec. 7 in Atlanta. Beck had surgery on Monday to repair his ulnar collateral ligament in the elbow. The procedure was performed by Dr. Neal ElAttrache in Los Angeles. Beck is expected to begin throwing next spring. He could have returned for a sixth season but instead will enter the NFL draft. Beck posted on Instagram: “The past five years at the University of Georgia have been nothing short of a dream come true and I will forever cherish the memories that have been made.” Gunner Stockton, who took over for Beck in the second half against Texas, will make his first start for Georgia on Wednesday in the Sugar Bowl against Notre Dame in the College Football Playoff quarterfinals. Beck has started every game of the 2023 and 2024 seasons. He was 24-3 as a starter. Beck passed for 3,941 yards with 24 touchdowns and only six interceptions in 2023 but had more difficulties with turnovers this season as he passed for 28 touchdowns with 12 interceptions. He completed 7 of 13 passes for 56 yards before his injury in the SEC championship game. Georgia coach Kirby Smart stuck with Beck despite a midseason string of eight interceptions in three games. “Obviously, you look at the stats and they aren’t the same stats as the year before,” offensive coordinator Mike Bobo said Saturday when reflecting on Beck's career. “The goal in this league is to win the SEC championship. And he was the quarterback of that team that got us to that game and put us in that position.” Added offensive guard Tate Ratledge: “I think Carson should be remembered as a great player. He’s who got us to this point of the season.” Stockton, a sophomore, completed 12 of 16 passes for 71 yards with one interception against Texas. He signed with Georgia as a highly recruited in-state player from Rabun County High School, where he broke Trevor Lawrence's state high school record for most career touchdown passes and Deshaun Watson's state record for combined rushing and passing touchdowns in a career. “Obviously when he was in high school, he was one of the best to ever do it in Georgia,” Bulldogs linebacker Chaz Chambliss said of Stockton before adding that he “just has that fire in him.” Georgia was preparing to start Stockton before announcing Beck's season-ending injury. Stockton will attempt to join a short list of quarterbacks who have been promoted from backup jobs to win national championships. The list includes Georgia's Stetson Bennett, who began the 2021 season as the backup to JT Daniels before taking over the starting job in October. Lawrence took over for Kelly Bryant during Clemson's 2018 championship season. The best comparison to Stockton's challenge during the CFP era may be Cardale Jones on the 2014 Ohio State national championship team. Jones' first start was the Big Ten championship game following an injury to J.T. Barrett, who began the preseason as the expected backup before Braxton Miller's injury. Stockton led Georgia to a touchdown on his first drive against Texas and has had extra practice time during the Bulldogs' break after receiving a first-round bye in the playoff. “To see his growth since he’s been here, he’s been waiting patiently, he’s been sitting and putting his time in and he’s been working while he was waiting,” Georgia safety Malaki Starks said Friday. “And now he gets a chance to go out there and prove what he can do. And, you know, I believe in him 100%.” Starks, who is from Jefferson, Ga., often faced Stockton's Rabun County teams in high school. “He’s always been, you know, that guy, you know, since I’ve been growing up,” Starks said. “He’s an easy guy to follow. I mean, Gunner is a great guy, you know, very respectful, great parents. I mean, he’s the guy that you want to lead. And a lot of guys have confidence in him. And I think you saw it during games in the SEC (championship game), how much the guys believed in him.” ___ Get poll alerts and updates on the AP Top 25 throughout the season. Sign up here . The Apple Watch's ability to stick to glass surfaces is primarily due to the materials and engineering behind its display. The Apple Watch features a unique curved OLED display that is not only visually stunning but also functions as a key component in creating the light gel effect. OLED displays emit light when an electric current passes through them, and they are known for their thinness and flexibility, making them ideal for the curved design of the Apple Watch.(The Center Square) – House Oversight Chair Rep. James Comer, R-Ky., has opened an investigation into the Federal Emergency Management Agency over reports that it discriminated against supporters of Donald Trump. Comer said whistleblower reports suggest anti-Trump discrimination is rampant and has been going on for years. “[O]n the condition of anonymity, a FEMA official stated that the practice avoiding ‘white or conservative-dominated’ areas is an ‘open secret at the agency that has been going on for years,’” Comer said in a letter to FEMA. The investigation comes after FEMA fired one of its hurricane response supervisors after news went viral that she told her workers to avoid “Trump houses.” However, that employee has publicly said she was only following orders and acting according to the culture at FEMA. Comer and more than two dozen Republican lawmakers sent a letter to FEMA Administrator Deanne Criswell demanding documentation, from internal policies to spending figures to incident reports. Lawmakers have pointed toward more anonymous sources backing up the fired employee’s claims. “Additionally, another whistleblower contacted the Committee during the hearing," the letter said. "This individual informed the Committee that a FEMA contractor warned a disabled veteran’s family in Georgia to remove Trump campaign materials from their home because FEMA supervisors viewed Trump supporters as domestic terrorists. At a hearing this week, U.S. Rep. Greg Steube, R-Fla., pointed to 35 of his constituents who shared similar stories with him. Lawmakers grilled Criswell over the discrimination reports at the hearing as well as FEMA’s recent focus on Diversity Equity and Inclusion efforts, something FEMA named as its number one goal in its latest strategic report. Lawmakers also raised concerns about the agency spending hundreds of millions of dollars on helping migrants. Defenders of FEMA have said the migrant funds do not take directly from disaster relief, while critics insist it shows missplaced priorities for the emergency relief agency. “In the fiscal year of 2023, FEMA spent nearly a billion dollars, $789 million, to shelter illegals in the United States,” Rep. Marjorie Taylor Green, R-Ga., said at the hearing, as The Center Square previously reported . “This past year it was $641 million, and this money is largely distributed through NGOs...and this was to house illegal aliens," she added. "Not Americans, who by the way all that money, that comes from Americans bank accounts when they write their checks to pay their taxes." At the hearing this week, Criswell also said she will request the Inspector General investigate the question of political discrimination at FEMA. She also said she does not think this fired employee is indicative of a broader problem in the agency but is looking into it. Criswell said FEMA workers went back to the homes that were skipped over by the fired employee and promised to ensure it doesn't happen again. “The Committee is in the process of investigating these claims,” the Oversight letter said. “If they are true, they would corroborate concerns that political discrimination extends beyond [the fired FEMA employee]. Furthermore, they suggest an apparent culture, whether sanctioned or not, within FEMA to politically discriminate against disaster survivors, specifically those who support President-elect Donald Trump.”TGNAB launches drug-free awareness initiative for Telangana studentsThe Prime Minister said his younger brother, who had learning difficulties because of complications at birth, had met “all the challenges life threw at him with courage and good humour”. He died peacefully on Boxing Day, according to the Prime Minister’s spokesman. The Prime Minister had been due to go on holiday with his family on Friday, but it is understood that he will now remain at home, and hopes to join them later. Sir Keir said in a statement: “My brother Nick was a wonderful man. “He met all the challenges life threw at him with courage and good humour. We will miss him very much. “I would like to thank all those who treated and took care of Nick. Their skill and compassion is very much appreciated.” Sir Keir spoke candidly about his brother in a recent biography written by journalist and former Labour Party adviser Tom Baldwin. While growing up in Surrey, the brothers shared a bunk bed in a room with an airing cupboard, and “just enough space for a couple of small desks where we’d do our homework”. The biography recorded how each child of the Starmer family was given a dog for their 10th birthday, and Nick and his twin sister Katy received Jack Russell terriers called Greg and Ben. The book also described how their mother, Jo, had taught Nick to read, but Sir Keir remembered how the school described his brother as “remedial”. Sir Keir, the middle child of four siblings, said: “They had no expectation of him or anything and I’m not sure he even sat exams, so he had nothing to show for coming out of education. “We were a family of six, so it didn’t feel lonely and I shared a room with him, but Nick didn’t have many friends and got called ‘thick’ or ‘stupid’ by other kids.” He added: “Even now I try to avoid using words like that to describe anyone.” Nick worked on scrap cars and scaffolding, earning enough money to rent a home near where he had grown up, according to the book. It said Sir Keir was best man at Nick’s wedding, and the now Prime Minister recalled borrowing a car so his brother was not “driving his bride from the church in his beaten-up minivan, which had all his clothes in the back”. The marriage ended and Nick lived for some time in Yorkshire. In 2022, Sir Keir stepped away from local election campaigning to make several hospital visits to see his brother, who was seriously ill at the time. The Prime Minister also spoke about Nick in his speech at this year’s Labour Party conference in Liverpool. As he described his early encounters with art and culture, and the need to remove social barriers, Sir Keir told delegates: “My brother, who had difficulties learning, he didn’t get those opportunities. “Every time I achieved something in my life, my dad used to say, ‘Your brother has achieved just as much as you, Keir’. “And he was right. I still believe that.” Mr Baldwin, writing for The Times on Friday, recalled the moment in 2023 that he learned from Sir Keir that his brother was dying of lung cancer. He wrote: “This has been a huge part of his life over the past couple of years, during which he made regular trips to Leeds where his brother was in hospital. “Even during the election campaign and since he entered Downing Street, Starmer has continued to visit without a camera crew in sight. “He got to know the staff treating his brother so well that he could recite all their names and they would let him into the hospital through a back door so that there would be no publicity.” Conservative Party leader Kemi Badenoch was among those in the world of politics to offer their condolences. She wrote on X, formerly Twitter: “This is such awful news. Particularly devastating at Christmas time. “My sincere condolences to Keir Starmer and all his family.” Irish premier Simon Harris wrote: “My sincere sympathy to Keir Starmer and his family on such sad news. “They are in my thoughts at this difficult time.”

FEMA under investigation over Trump supporter discriminationRomania's pro-European Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu was leading in the first round of presidential elections Sunday according to exit polls, with the far right not yet assured of a place in the second round, despite a breakthrough in support. With 25 percent of the vote according to two exit polls, Ciolacu appeared to be well ahead of far-right challengers looking to capitalise on this EU member's concerns about inflation and the war in neighbouring Ukraine. The same exit polls gave second place to centre-right former journalist turned small-town mayor Elena Lasconi at 18 percent, with two far-right candidates scoring 15 and 16 percent. In the absence of an outright winner in the first round -- scoring more than 50 percent -- the top two candidates go through to a second-round run-off in the poor NATO member on December 8. Ciolacu, a Social Democrat, is leading a field of 13 contenders in the race to take over from President Klaus Iohannis in the largely ceremonial post. He welcomed the exit polls putting him in the lead, but said all the votes would have to be counted before he knew who he would face in the second round. Lasconi too, was cautious. "The scores are very tight, it's not yet time to celebrate," said the 52-year-old politician. Far-right leader George Simion, 38, who some had forecast might take second place, is for the moment in fourth. Exit polls put him just behind the 62-year-old pro-Russian candidate Calin Georgescu. But Simion said Sunday evening: "We'll see the results of the ballot boxes at 11:00 pm (2100 GMT)." Ciolacu's party has shaped Romania's politics for more than three decades, and as he voted Sunday he promised stability and a "decent" standard of living. But political analyst Cristian Parvulescu told AFP: "The far right is by far the big winner of this election." Simion saw his popularity surge by tapping into voter anger over record inflation while promising more affordable housing. Looking for a new election breakthrough for European far-right parties, Simion warned of possible "fraud" and "foreign interference" when voting. But he added: "I am happy that we are giving Romanians hope and the prospect of a better future." The stakes are high for Romania, which has a 650-kilometre (400-mile) border with Ukraine and has become more important since Russia invaded its neighbour in 2022. More from this section The Black Sea nation now plays a "vital strategic role" for NATO -- as it is a base for more than 5,000 soldiers -- and the transit of Ukrainian grain, the New Strategy Center think tank said. Donald Trump's victory in the US presidential election has further "complicated" Romania's choice, political analyst Cristian Pirvulescu told AFP. Known for his fiery speeches, Simion is a Trump fan who sometimes dons a red cap in appreciation of his idol. Simion opposes sending military aid to Ukraine, wants a "more patriotic Romania" and frequently lashes out against what he calls the "greedy corrupt bubble" running the European Union. Having campaigned hard to win over Romania's large diaspora working abroad, he said the country had only "minions and cowards as leaders". Pirvulescu predicted that if Simion reached the second round his AUR party would get a boost in the December parliamentary election. "Romanian democracy is in danger for the first time since the fall of communism in 1989," he said. "I'm really afraid we'll end up with Simion in the second round," 36-year-old IT worker Oana Diaconu told AFP, expressing concern about the far-right leader's unpredictable nature and attacks on the European Union. The campaign was marked by controversy and personal attacks, with Simion facing accusations of meeting with Russian spies -- a claim he has denied. Ciolacu has been criticised for his use of private jets. Some observers had tipped Lasconi, now mayor of the small town of Campulung and head of a centre-right opposition party, as a surprise package. Sunday's exit polls appeared to suggest they were right. During campaigning, she had said she wanted a future "where no one has to pack their suitcases and leave" the country and for "institutions that work". bur/js-jj/The concept of hair diplomacy is not a new one. Culture Management Group Reveals Lineup and Programming for Culture Beach Jam 2024 in AccraBy Conor Ryan Bill Simmons doesn’t seem to be a huge fan of Jerod Mayo. The longtime Boston sports scribe and “The Ringer” founder has not held back when it comes to calling out Mayo and the repeated flaws and lapses that have hindered a 3-9 Patriots roster. It didn’t take Simmons long to throw another barb at New England’s coaching staff in the early stages of the Patriots’ 34-15 loss to Miami. Less than 30 minutes into Sunday’s matchup against the Dolphins, Simmons took to social media to take umbrage with New England’s lack of aggressiveness. “This spring, Jerod Mayo needs to find an author to help him write a book called Scared Football,” Simmons posted. “Just throw all his scared concepts and strategies in there — passing up 4th and 1s, handing off on 3rd and 16 to set up 45 yard FGs, just rattle all of them off. SCARED FOOTBALL.” This spring, Jerod Mayo needs to find an author to help him write a book called Scared Football. Just throw all his scared concepts and strategies in there — passing up 4th and 1s, handing off on 3rd and 16 to set up 45 yard FGs, just rattle all of them off. SCARED FOOTBALL. A parade of penalties (nine total, seven accepted by Miami) and porous defensive play by New England put them behind the eight-ball in the first half — with the Dolphins entering halftime with a 24-0 lead. But New England also struggled to generate any sort of momentum on offense in the early going. As Simmons noted, New England passed up an opportunity to go for it on 4th-and-1 from its own 39-yard line on its opening drive — opting for the safe call over turning to Rhamondre Stevenson or Antonio Gibson on the ground. In the sequence that led to Joey Slye’s missed field goal in the first quarter, New England was staring at a 3rd-and-16 from Miami’s 30-yard line. It was a tough spot to be in after tackle Demontrey Jacobs was whistled for a hold — sapping plenty of momentum. But instead of putting the ball in Maye’s hands in hopes of making life a bit easier for Slye with a closer kick — New England chose to run the ball, with Rhamondre Stevenson gaining just three years. New England’s conservative approach has backfired in recent weeks, especially with the team’s defense also regressing over that same stretch. After relinquishing over 400 yards of offense to the Rams last week, New England’s D coughed up four touchdowns and 373 total yards to Miami at Hard Rock Stadium. This is just the latest shot across the bow fired from Simmons against New England’s coaching staff. “This is the worst-coached Pats team since Rod Rust. They play all the hits every week — dumb penalties, drops, special teams mistakes, incredibly poor play calling,” Simmons posted on X in October. “Each week is worse than the last. You get what you pay for.” The Patriots went 1-15 during Rust’s lone season coaching New England in 1990. It still stands as the worst record in franchise history. The 2024 Patriots may not be mired in that same level of ineptitude, but Sunday’s lopsided loss was still a stark step backward for New England. Adjusted EBITDA is a supplemental measure of our performance that is not required by, or presented in accordance with, GAAP. Adjusted EBITDA is not a measurement of our financial performance under GAAP and should not be considered as an alternative to net income or loss or any other performance measure derived in accordance with GAAP, or as an alternative to cash flows from operating activities as a measure of our liquidity. We define Adjusted EBITDA as net income or loss before interest income, net, provision for income taxes, depreciation and amortization, and before stock-based compensation expense and other expense, net. We have provided below a reconciliation of Adjusted EBITDA to net loss, the most directly comparable GAAP financial measure. We have presented Adjusted EBITDA in this press release and our Quarterly Report on Form 10-Q to be filed after this press release because it is a key measure used by our management and board of directors to understand and evaluate our core operating performance and trends, to prepare and approve our annual budget, and to develop short and long-term operational plans. In particular, we believe that the exclusion of the amounts eliminated in calculating Adjusted EBITDA can provide a useful measure for period-to-period comparisons of our core business. Accordingly, we believe that Adjusted EBITDA provides useful information to investors and others in understanding and evaluating our operating results in the same manner as our management and board of directors. We have not reconciled our Adjusted EBITDA outlook to GAAP Net income (loss) because we do not provide an outlook for GAAP Net income (loss) due to the uncertainty and potential variability of Other (income) expense, net and (Benefit from) provision for income taxes, which are reconciling items between Adjusted EBITDA and GAAP Net income (loss). Because we cannot reasonably predict such items, a reconciliation of the non-GAAP financial measure outlook to the corresponding GAAP measure is not available without unreasonable effort. We caution, however, that such items could have a significant impact on the calculation of GAAP Net income (loss). Our use of Adjusted EBITDA has limitations as an analytical tool, and you should not consider it in isolation or as a substitute for analysis of our financial results as reported under GAAP. Some of these limitations are as follows: Because of these and other limitations, you should consider Adjusted EBITDA along with other GAAP-based financial performance measures, including various cash flow metrics, net loss, and our GAAP financial results. The following table presents a reconciliation of Adjusted EBITDA to net loss for each of the periods indicated: Phreesia, Inc. Adjusted EBITDA ( Unaudited) Three months ended October 31, Nine months ended October 31, (in thousands) 2024 2023 2024 2023 Net loss $ (14,403 ) $ (31,941 ) $ (52,137 ) $ (106,239 ) Interest income, net (26 ) (523 ) (311 ) (2,027 ) Provision for income taxes 442 372 1,702 1,326 Depreciation and amortization 7,087 7,463 21,063 21,234 Stock-based compensation expense 16,525 17,963 49,813 53,749 Other expense, net 144 47 261 39 Adjusted EBITDA $ 9,769 $ (6,619 ) $ 20,391 $ (31,918 ) We calculate Free cash flow as Net cash provided by (used in) operating activities less capitalized internal-use software development costs and purchases of property and equipment. Additionally, Free cash flow is a supplemental measure of our performance that is not required by, or presented in accordance with, GAAP. We consider Free cash flow to be a liquidity measure that provides useful information to management and investors about the amount of cash generated by our business that can be used for strategic opportunities, including investing in our business, making strategic investments, partnerships and acquisitions and strengthening our financial position. The following table presents a reconciliation of Free cash flow from Net cash provided by (used in) operating activities, the most directly comparable GAAP financial measure, for each of the periods indicated: Phreesia, Inc. Boston's Syrian community reacts to the fall of the Assad governmentHere are five self-hosted photo storage options for you to consider. SEE: The definition of open source can be controversial, with some commercial models claiming the title. NextCloud This open-source project offers a mobile app and auto-upload feature. You can also use it as the host for other photo management apps. Plus, it can host non-photos like documents, calendars, and contacts. Photoprism This open-source app uses Google TensorFlow to automatically classify images. It extracts location data, detects duplicates, and can sync with Nextcloud. Piwigo This open-source photo gallery software offers geolookup and multi-user support. Its album features are great, including batch management, album hierarchies, and more. It also has a mobile app. Lychee This open-source photo gallery app has excellent album and metadata-editing features. But, of course, its gallery features are where it does its best work. Just be aware that it doesn’t have any machine learning for auto-detection. LibrePhotos Like most tools named Libre , LibrePhotos is a fork. In this case, it’s a fork of OwnPhotos that enables object detection, face training, and event-based album generation. LibrePhotos also integrates with NextCloud. Self-hosted photo storage provides albums, sharing, and automatic facial recognition — all the tools you’d get from that cloud provider that suddenly wants to charge you while still gathering your data for its ad targeting. If you have the space on your computer or server, you can self-host your own photos in no time. What is a self-hosted photo and video gallery? A self-hosted photo and video gallery allows users to store and share media on their own hardware or virtual server. It provides an alternative to smartphone photo apps or social media. What are the system requirements for hosting my photo gallery? Different self-hosted photo galleries have different requirements. Most services will have documentation available. Nextcloud, for instance, offers cloud hosting as part of some of its plans. Photo hosting generally doesn’t require a lot of RAM — PhotoPrism can be installed on a Raspberry Pi 4 with 4 GB of RAM. LibrePhotos requires 10 GB of HDD Space to operate through Docker Compose. Megan Crouse updated this article.Insperity, Inc. (NYSE:NSP) Shares Acquired by KBC Group NV

John Healey said that the Government’s “interest” in Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), is “that they live up to their promises to protect” rights, when he spoke to reporters after a Cobra meeting on Thursday. HTS is banned in the UK because of its past association with al Qaida, the terrorist organisation once led by Osama bin Laden. But its leader, Abu Mohammed al-Golani, cut ties with al Qaida years ago and has sought to present his group as a more moderate and inclusive organisation, leading some to suggest the group should no longer be proscribed. When asked whether the Government was considering the status of the group, Mr Healey said: “Proscription is not a matter for now. “It doesn’t stop us talking to all the parties, and our interest in HTS is that they live up to their promises to protect the rights of all individuals and all groups, to respect international law and to prevent Syria becoming a base for a fresh terrorist threat.” Mr Healey said that Thursday’s meeting was “about making sure we have, as a Government, a laser focus on the role that we can play with allies to see a stable, peaceful transition. “So that the Syrians get the government they need for the future, and the region can see the stability in the future that it also needs.” Cobra meetings are called when ministers or officials need to respond to urgent matters. Following the toppling of the Bashar Assad regime over the weekend, the UK has paused decisions on asylum applications from Syria. Thousands of Syrians have been granted asylum in the UK but, earlier this week, the Home Office said decisions on applications would be paused while events unfold in Damascus. When asked how long the system would be paused for, and whether the move was fair, Mr Healey said on Thursday: “This is early days. “It’s a measure in response to rapidly changing developments, and the most important thing for us now is that the UK plays and will continue to play a full role with allies to see a stable, peaceful, orderly transition and that requires a political process. “It requires dialogue at the heart of it, and today’s ministerial meeting, the Cobra meeting, was about making sure that we do just that.” Earlier on Thursday, G7 leaders said that they “stand with the people of Syria” and “denounce terrorism and violent extremism in all its forms”. In a statement, Sir Keir Starmer and his counterparts said: “The G7 will work with and fully support a future Syrian government that abides by those standards and results from that process.” It went on: “After decades of atrocities committed by the Assad regime, we stand with the people of Syria. We denounce terrorism and violent extremism in all its forms. “We are hopeful that anyone seeking a role in governing Syria will demonstrate a commitment to the rights of all Syrians, prevent the collapse of state institutions, work on the recovery and rehabilitation of the country, and ensure the conditions for safe and dignified voluntary return to Syria of all those who were forced to flee the country.”None

The Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) has revealed that Value Added Tax (VAT) revenue generated in the southern states of Nigeria significantly exceeded the allocation received by these states from the VAT pool in August 2024. According to recent data released by the FIRS, the nationwide VAT revenue for August stood at N444.19 billion, with southern states contributing an impressive N387.06 billion. However, despite this significant contribution, the southern states received just N149.09 billion in VAT allocation. This contrasts sharply with the situation in ten northern states , which contributed a combined N13.69 billion but received a substantial N59.17 billion in allocations. For instance, Zamfara State, a northern state, contributed only N432.80 million but received N5.65 billion, while Lagos State , which contributed a staggering N249.77 billion, received just N40.22 billion in return. Tribune Online reports that Nigeria’s proposed tax reform bill, introduced by the Presidential Committee on Fiscal and Tax Reform chaired by Taiwo Oyedele, sparked widespread debate recently. The reform bill seeks to streamline the tax system by harmonising multiple levies, unifying revenue collection processes, and integrating technology to enhance efficiency. A key proposal is the adoption of the derivation principle for distributing VAT revenues. Under this principle, VAT revenue would be distributed based on where goods and services are consumed rather than pooled centrally and redistributed. The Chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), Zacch Adedeji, clarified the rationale for this shift, emphasising that VAT is fundamentally a consumption tax. While the proposed reforms aim to ensure fairer revenue distribution, they have faced strong opposition from some northern stakeholders , who argue that the bill undermines the interests of the North and other sub-national entities. The recent data from the FIRS highlights the disparity in VAT contributions and allocations, with southern states receiving significantly less in allocation compared to their contributions, while some northern states received allocations exceeding their contributions. Biden did the second-guessing as he delivered a speech at the Brookings Institution defending his economic record and challenging Trump to preserve Democratic policy ideas when he returns to the White House next month. The president laid out favorable recent economic data but acknowledged his rare public regret that he had not been more self-promotional in advertising the financial support provided by his administration as the country emerged from the pandemic. “I signed the American Rescue Plan, the most significant economic recovery package in our history, and also learned something from Donald Trump,” Biden said at the Washington-based think tank. “He signed checks for people for 7,400 bucks ... and I didn’t. Stupid.” The decision by the former reality TV star and real estate developer to add his name to the checks sent by the U.S. Treasury to millions of Americans struggling during the coronavirus marked the first time a president’s name appeared on any IRS payments. Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris , who replaced him as the Democratic nominee , largely failed to convince the American public of the strength of the economy. The addition of 16 million jobs, funding for infrastructure, new factories and investments in renewable energy were not enough to overcome public exhaustion over inflation, which spiked in 2022 and left many households coping with elevated grocery, gasoline and housing costs. More than 6 in 10 voters in November’s election described the economy as “poor” or “not so good,” according to AP VoteCast, an extensive survey of the electorate. Trump won nearly 7 in 10 of the voters who felt the economy was in bad shape, paving the way for a second term as president after his 2020 loss to Biden. Biden used his speech to argue that Trump was inheriting a strong economy that is the envy of the world. The inflation rate fell without a recession that many economists had viewed as inevitable, while the unemployment rate is a healthy 4.2% and applications to start new businesses are at record levels. Biden called the numbers under his watch “a new set of benchmarks to measure against the next four years.” “President-elect Trump is receiving the strongest economy in modern history,” said Biden, who warned that Trump’s planned tax cuts could lead to massive deficits or deep spending cuts. He also said that Trump’s promise of broad tariffs on foreign imports would be a mistake, part of a broader push Tuesday by the administration to warn against Trump’s threatened action. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen also issued a word of caution about them at a summit of The Wall Street Journal’s CEO Council. “I think the imposition of broad based tariffs, at least of the type that have been discussed, almost all economists agree this would raise prices on American consumers,” she said. Biden was also critical of Trump allies who have pushed Project 2025 , a policy blueprint from the Heritage Foundation that calls for a complete overhaul of the federal government. Trump has disavowed participation in it, though parts were written by his allies and overlap with his stated views on economics, immigration, education policy and civil rights. “I pray to God the president-elect throws away Project 2025,” Biden said. “I think it would be an economic disaster.” Associated Press writer Fatima Hussein in Washington contributed to this report.

It was a 10-year-old boy, Leonard Ross, who received the honor by winning a television quiz show. Since then, business titans, political giants and global film stars have all been among those ringing the opening bell at the NYSE. Ronald Reagan rang the bell as president in 1985. Billionaire businessman and former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Hollywood star Robert Downey Jr. have also rung the bell. The list even includes famous Muppets: Miss Piggy was once a bell ringer. President-elect Donald Trump joined that list Thursday when he opened trading at the famous stock exchange on Wall Street. He was accompanied by his wife, Melania, who interestingly enough received the honor before her husband. As first lady, she rang the bell in 2019 as part of her “Be Best” program. Bell-ringers are more commonly founders and executives chosen primarily from the exchange's more than 2,300 listed companies. Over the last few months, the guests have included executives from Alaska Air Group, Bath & Body Works, and Ally Financial. Stock trading around the location of the NYSE's current home has deep roots that trace back to the Dutch founding of New Amsterdam and when Wall Street had an actual wall. The NYSE traces its direct roots to the “Buttonwood Agreement” signed in 1792, which set rules for stock trading and commissions. The NYSE moved into its first permanent home in 1865. The first bell in use was actually a gong. The exchange moved into its current iconic building in 1903 and started using an electronically operated brass bell. That has evolved into synchronized bells in each of the NYSE’s four trading areas.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Democrats and Republicans agreed on at least one thing before November’s election: California would play a central role in determining control of the U.S. House. Indeed it did. Democrat Adam Gray's come-from-behind victory over Republican Rep. John Duarte in a Central Valley farm-belt district Tuesday — the final House contest decided this year — gave Democrats their third pick-up of a GOP-held seat in the state, a small victory in a tough year for Democrats nationally. While Democratic wins narrowed the gap in the House, Republicans held their ground in two other toss-up contests that helped the GOP defend its fragile majority in Washington. Republicans won 220 House seats this election cycle , with Democrats holding 215 seats. Despite falling short of a majority, Democrats stressed that the party will gain seats next year, leaving the chamber even more closely divided. “Netting three seats was a very big deal,” Rep. Pete Aguilar, the third-ranking Democrat in the chamber, who lives in Redlands, east of Los Angeles, said in Washington. Democratic enthusiasm was tempered, however, by turnout figures that lagged the 2020 presidential election in the heavily Democratic state, even with Kamala Harris leading the Democratic ticket in her home state. Also, Republicans made incremental gains in the state Legislature. Voters overwhelmingly endorsed a ballot proposal that makes shoplifting a felony for repeat offenders again and increases penalties for some drug charges amid frustration over retail crimes, a proposal opposed by some Democrats. The election showed Democrats will need to pay closer attention to issues like crime and the cost of living, even in a state where the party holds every statewide office and dominates the Legislature and congressional delegation, Claremont McKenna College political scientist Jack Pitney said. In the House, Democrats “were hoping that California would push them over the top to gain a majority. But their gains elsewhere were not strong enough,” Pitney added, pointing to GOP wins in North Carolina. Gray won by a margin of less than 200 votes, with election officials reporting Tuesday all ballots had been counted. Duarte captured the seat in 2022 when he defeated Gray by one of the closest margins in the country, 564 votes. He was often listed among the most vulnerable House Republicans given that narrow margin of victory in a district with a Democratic tilt — about 11 points over registered Republicans. Gray said in a statement: “We always knew that this race would be as close as they come, and we’re expecting a photo finish this year, too.” In other Democratic House gains, first-time candidate Derek Tran ousted Republican Rep. Michelle Steel in a Southern California district anchored in Orange County, while Democrat George Whitesides toppled Republican Rep. Mike Garcia is a district north of Los Angeles. In a district east of Los Angeles, Republican Rep. Ken Calvert again held off Democrat Will Rollins in a repeat of their 2022 contest. And Republican Rep. David Valadao kept his grip on a farm-belt seat, despite its heavy Democratic registration edge. The outcome will leave Republicans with nine of the state's 52 U.S. House seats next year. Although California is often seen as a liberal monolith, a string of House districts has proved volatile in recent elections, spotlighting their importance to both parties. Democrats snatched seven seats from Republicans in 2018, then Republicans seized four from Democrats in 2020. In the 2022 elections, Republicans gained one seat, from 11 to 12, while Democrats dropped to 40 seats from 42, after California lost a House seat in reapportionment after the 2020 census. Overall, the state dropped to 52 districts from 53. The state played a pivotal role in securing the gavel for Republicans in 2022 and installing Rep. Kevin McCarthy of Bakersfield as speaker .After entering Aleppo, Syrian insurgents advance to a nearby province in a major setback for AssadNew Jersey Senator Andy Kim posted videos of what he described as multiple unidentified drones flying over Hunterdon County, New Jersey, on Thursday night, December 12, after he headed out with local police to investigate the widespread sightings. Storyful could not independently verify if the objects in Kim’s footage are drones or other kinds of aircraft. Kim posted four videos, with each showing two or more lights moving across the night sky. Some lights that moved low over a tree line gave off a “solid white light” while “others flashed of red and green,” and some of the unidentified objects appeared to be “moving in small clusters of 2-4,” Kim “We clearly saw several that would move horizontally and then immediately switch back in the opposite direction in maneuvers that planes can’t do,” he added. Kim said he and police officers used a flight tracker app to help them distinguish drones from airplanes, and “often saw about 5-7 lights at a time that were low and not associated with aircraft we could see on the tracker app.” Police told Kim that they had used helicopters to try to get closer to the objects, but said “the drones would turn off the lights and go dark if approached.” Earlier on Thursday, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) issued a saying they had “no evidence” that the drone sightings “pose a national security or public safety threat or have a foreign nexus.” They said they were working closely with New Jersey State Police to determine “whether the reported drone flights are actually drones or are instead manned aircraft or otherwise inaccurate sightings.” Kim expressed frustration over the lack of information about the drones from either federal authorities or the military. “This has gone on for weeks. It’s hard to understand how with the technology we have we aren’t able to track these devices to determine origin and this makes me much more concerned about our capabilities more broadly when it comes to drone detection and counter-measures,” he said. Wade Taylor IV scored 15 points and dished out 10 assists and C.J. Wilcher added 14 points as No. 13 Texas A&M throttled Abilene Christian 92-54 on Saturday afternoon in College Station, Texas. The Aggies (11-2) were in charge from the jump, forging a 19-point lead at halftime and never looking back. Texas A&M scored the first points of the second half, was up by 28 with 13:23 to play and cruised to the finish line while winning its seventh straight game. Taylor's output moved him into second place in the Aggies all-time scoring list. His 1,779 points are now behind only Bernard King, who had 1,990 from 1999-2003. Andersson Garcia and Zhuric Phelps added 12 points each for Texas A&M, which appears to be hitting on all cylinders heading into its Southeastern Conference opener at home against rival Texas on Jan. 4. Phelps added 10 rebounds for the Aggies. Quion Williams led the Wildcats (8-6) with 14 points. Abilene Christian missed its final six shots and went the last 5:24 of the game without a point. The Aggies made a statement in the early going by scoring the game's first nine points over the initial 3 1/2 minutes, with seven of those coming from Coleman. Abilene Christian fought back to within 16-12 after Dontrez Williams' layup with 12:12 left in the half. But A&M swung back, producing a 14-0 run capped by Garcia's layup with 8:51 to play in the half to pull away to a 30-12 advantage. The Wildcats again cut into their deficit, pulling to 30-19 when Cade Hornecker hit a layup with 6:26 to play until halftime. A&M boosted the lead back to 17 points after a pair of free throws by Taylor and got two more from the charity stripe to take a 48-29 edge to the break. Wilcher led all scorers in the half with 12 points on 4-of-6 shooting from beyond the arc while Garcia hit for 10 points for A&M while making all four of his shots from the floor. The Aggies outshot Abilene Christian 61.5 percent to 40.7 percent before halftime. Quion Williams and Leonardo Bettiol paced the Wildcats with seven points each in the first half. --Field Level MediaIsrael and Lebanon's Hezbollah agree to a ceasefire after nearly 14 months of fighting188 sb bet365 288

LOS ANGELES — Eric Dailey Jr. scored 18 points, making four 3-pointers, and No. 22 UCLA edged 14th-ranked Gonzaga 65-62 on Saturday in the first college basketball game played at Intuit Dome, the new home of the NBA’s Los Angeles Clippers. Ryan Nembhard’s basket tied it at 60 before the Bruins (11-2) scored five points in a row. Nembhard then drove the length of the court and scored while getting fouled. After a timeout, he missed the potential tying free throw with 8 seconds remaining. Graham Ike fouled Skyy Clark, who made both free throws for a 65-62 lead with 5 seconds left. Nembhard's 3-point heave from halfcourt missed at the buzzer. Ike led the Bulldogs (9-4) with 24 points and eight rebounds. Nembhard had 16 points and eight assists. Graham was 11 of 16 from the floor on a day when both teams struggled offensively in the 18,000-seat arena. It was a tough shooting day for UCLA's Tyler Bilodeau, who was limited to seven points — well under his team-leading 15.1 average — while going against Ike. Wade Taylor IV had 15 points and a career-high 10 assists, and Zhuric Phelps had 12 points and 10 rebounds in Texas A&M's home victory over Abilene Christian. Taylor's 15 points passed Vernon Smith, who scored 1,778 points at A&M from 1977-81, for second on Texas A&M's all-time scoring list. Taylor now has 1,779 career points and needs 212 more to pass Bernard King, who scored 1,990 points from 1999-2003, as Texas A&M’s all-time scoring leader. The Aggies (11-2) opened the game on a 7-0 run and never looked back. Texas A&M led 48-29 at halftime and ended the game on a 12-0 run over the final 5:24. Quion Williams led Abilene Christian (8-6) with 14 points. Colby Rogers scored 28 points and Moussa Cisse had 13 points, 11 rebounds and three blocks as host Memphis defeated Mississippi. PJ Haggerty finished with 17 points as Memphis (10-3) won for the third time in four games. Sean Pedulla led Ole Miss (11-2) with 13 points and four assists. Jaylen Murray scored 12 and Malik Dia 11 as the Rebels had their five-game winning streak halted. Memphis' defense caused early problems for the Rebels, and the Tigers extended their lead to double digits. But, Ole Miss made five straight field goals, including a string of 3-pointers, to get back into the game before halftime, trailing by just two points at the break. 1xbet vs bet365 NoneThe Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry’s Businessmen Panel (BMP) on Sunday urged the government to ensure smooth gas supply to the local as well as the export industry so that local production and the exports could not be suffered, which have just started to show a positive trend after a long time. Expressing serious concerns over the threats of gas supply termination and notices of additional security payment by the SNGPL the FPCCI former president and BMP Chairman Mian Anjum Nisar argued that at a time when the exports data have showed some growth the government agencies, instead of taking business-friendly measures, are creating hurdles for the industry. He quoted the latest exports data and said the exports of readymade garments rose 23.17pc by value in the first quarter and 16.16pc by quantity, while knitwear rose 14.13pc by value and 2.17pc by quantity while bedwear posted a growth of 13.31pc in value and a growth of 14.55pc in quantity, which is an encouraging sign. The government should extend its full support to continue this positive trend of exports growth through uninterrupted gas supply to the captive power plants at afforadable and competitive rates. Mian Anjum Nisar called for swift implementation of a system based on modern technology for the selection and transmission of low-cost electricity. He wanted to complete all measures for the reform of the power sector within the specified timeline. He warned that the continued escalation of energy prices could result in the closure of industries, amplifying unemployment rates and diminishing Pakistan’s export capabilities. He emphasized the need for the government to explore and provide affordable energy alternatives for the industry, stressed that such measures are crucial for ensuring the competitiveness of Pakistani products in the global market. As the industrial sector grapples with the ramifications of the gas price hike, the BMP leader’s stance advocates for the preservation of industrial stability and the prevention of potential economic setbacks for Pakistan. He said that the repeated increase in the gas and electricity prices to an unbearable level by the government has left the trade and industry uncompetitive, blaming it for trapping the country in the IMF plans. Strongly opposing gas price surge, he said that the gas tariff hike has threatened the industrial sector, besides increasing unemployment, saying that the every government had poor economic policies that unleashed the free fall of rupee against the dollar, ensuing in input cost escalation to pull down the manufacturing growth. He demanded the government to take back the decision of hike in gas tariff in the larger interest of national economy and to save the industries from collapse. He warned that if the decision is not withdrawn the industries will close down, resulting in decline in exports and mass unemployment.

He was 100 years old. “Our founder, former US President Jimmy Carter, passed away this afternoon in Plains, Georgia,” the Carter Center said on the social media platform X. It added in a statement that he died peacefully, surrounded by his family. At age 52, Carter was sworn in as president on January 20, 1977, after defeating President Gerald R. Ford in the 1976 general election. Carter left office on January 20, 1981, following his 1980 general election loss to Ronald Reagan. He earned a Nobel Peace Prize in 2002. The 39th president of the United States was a Georgia peanut farmer who sought to restore trust in government when he assumed the presidency in 1977 and then built a reputation for tireless work as a humanitarian. He earned a Nobel Peace Prize in 2002. Tributes poured in from around the world for the former US President on Sunday. US President Joe Biden mourned Carter’s death, saying the world lost an “extraordinary leader, statesman and humanitarian” and he lost a dear friend. Biden cited Carter’s compassion and moral clarity, his work to eradicate disease, forge peace, advance civil and human rights, promote free and fair elections, house the homeless and advocacy for the disadvantaged as an example for others. “To all of the young people in this nation and for anyone in search of what it means to live a life of purpose and meaning – the good life – study Jimmy Carter, a man of principle, faith, and humility,” Biden said in a statement. “He showed that we are a great nation because we are a good people – decent and honorable, courageous and compassionate, humble and strong,” he added. Biden said he is ordering a state funeral for Carter in Washington. Businessman, Navy officer, evangelist, politician, negotiator, author, woodworker, citizen of the world — Carter forged a path that still challenges political assumptions and stands out among the 45 men who reached the nation’s highest office. The 39th president leveraged his ambition with a keen intellect, deep religious faith and prodigious work ethic, conducting diplomatic missions into his 80s and building houses for the poor well into his 90s. “My faith demands — this is not optional — my faith demands that I do whatever I can, wherever I am, whenever I can, for as long as I can, with whatever I have to try to make a difference,” Carter once said.

The cheese-loving stop-motion comedy duo Wallace and Gromit have been stumbling into invention-fueled hijinks since 1989’s Oscar-nominated short A Grand Day Out . This January, the characters return in A Vengeance Most Fowl , a feature-length adventure that’s basically a full-blown action movie. At this point, there’s seemingly nothing original creator Nick Park and Aardman Animation can’t do in claymation. So when I asked Park in early December if he would ever ditch the stop-motion for a “live-action” Wallace movie, in the style of Disney’s recent spate of hand-drawn-to-photoreal conversions, the answer was... immediate and visceral. “Well, it’s quite an easy answer,” he says. “NOOOOOOOO.” The live-action redo pipeline is not slowing down, despite mixed reactions and receipts. Disney started the trend nearly a decade ago with back to back hits of The Jungle Book , Beauty and the Beast , and The Lion King . 2023’s The Little Mermaid struggled to reach those highs, grossing as much worldwide as The Lion King did in the states alone, and this month’s Mufasa (technically a live-action-ish reimagining prequel) is off to a slow start this holiday season. But that isn’t stopping Disney from plowing through the backlog, with Snow White , Lilo & Stitch , and Moana all arriving in the next two years. Universal will try its luck in 2025 with a live-action How to Train Your Dragon , too. As for Wallace and Gromit, Park hopes to stick to animation. “ I think the movies themselves will always be clay,” he said. But Park has the ambition, along with his Vengeance Most Fowl co-director Merlin Crossingham, to bring the characters to any imaginable platform. Wallace and Gromit have done video games, they’ve done AR, and the director hopes they can do just about anything. “But I think [clay] is part of the character, it’s part of their soul to be that medium. It’s what they were born out of and it might take something away. It’s quite hard to define. ‘Thumby and funny’ is the phrase we’ve often used.” Neither Park nor Crossingham want to see Wallace and Gromit stuck in the past. Each film is a reason to evolve the characters — technologically (as with the armatures of the modern sculptures) and emotionally. While Vengeance Most Fowl might be the most stunt-heavy Wallace and Gromit film to date, it also forces the characters to examine their friendship and, by the end, hug it out. “We’ve sort of pushed them emotionally,” Crossingham said. “It’s in relative terms within the Wallace and Gromit world, but we’ve pushed them and I think it’s great to see them having a bit of a bigger arc to their emotional story.” “But it’s very much Wallace and Gromit,” Park added. “It is not too overt, but... a British version.” Wallace and Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl premieres on Netflix on Jan. 3, 2025. By Marc Jones LONDON (Reuters) -Arsenal moved up to second in the Premier League and within six points of Liverpool after a largely trouble-free, if slightly pedestrian, 1-0 win at home to struggling Ipswich Town on a chilly night in north London on Friday. A first-half goal from Kai Havertz, who pounced on a smart pull-back from Leandro Trossard, proved the winner although the hosts should have scored more as the Gunners’ performance failed to provide many pre-New Year fireworks. Lacking the creativity of the injured Bukayo Saka, it took 19 minutes before Arsenal mustered their first shot although four minutes after that Havertz netted his sixth of the season in all competitions by tapping in Trossard’s whipped cross. Ipswich had a spell of pressure after 10 minutes of the second half but it proved fleeting and Arsenal should have comfortably put the game to bed after that. Defender Gabriel Magalhaes missed a golden opportunity to extend his run of scoring from corners when he headed just wide when completely unmarked. Captain Martin Odegaard then blazed over after he danced from midfield into the visitors box. The win lifted Arsenal to 36 points behind Liverpool, who have 42 and a game in hand, and meant the Gunners leapfrogged both London rivals Chelsea, who have 35 points, and one of the season’s surprise packages Nottingham Forest, fourth on 34. Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta told reporters he was “very happy with the victory, with the clean sheet and with large parts of the game. We should have scored more but it is the consistency, the team conceded nothing again. “Considering all the circumstances we had this season, the amount of times we had to play with 10 men, all the injuries that we had, it’s good to be in the position that we are but it’s not where we want to be. We want to be first.” The Gunners next visit Brentford on New Year’s Day and Brighton & Hove Albion on Jan. 4 before playing two domestic cup games and hosting local rivals Tottenham Hotspur on Jan. 15. SLOW START Friday’s match started slowly as Arsenal kept the ball effortlessly early on, although it was mostly in non-threatening areas until Trossard burst to the byline after 23 minutes and fired the ball across for Havertz to prod in. Arsenal forward Gabriel Jesus thought he had added to his recent run of goals later in the half when he poked the ball through the Ipswich keeper Arijanet Muric’s legs from an unfathomably tight angle but it was ruled out for offside. The home side created a handful of good chances in the final 20 minutes too with Odegaard, Havertz and Trossard all getting shots in but if Arsenal are to keep up their challenge on Liverpool they will need to demonstrate more clinical finishing. Ipswich remain second-bottom with 12 points from 18 games, three off the safety zone, before they host Chelsea on Monday. “The players worked really hard and we got the game to a good place in the second half after a good 20 minutes,” Ipswich manager Kieran McKenna told the BBC. “Early on we were pinned in and couldn’t get out but to be where we were after 89 minutes I was really pleased ... Some defending was good and we’ll need that on Monday against Chelsea.” (Reporting by Marc Jones; Editing by Ken Ferris) Disclaimer: This report is auto generated from the Reuters news service. Prince of Wales sponsors camel trek across Oman in footsteps of 1928 British explorerArkansas receiver Andrew Armstrong said Tuesday that he is entering the NFL Draft. Later in the day, a school spokesman told reporters that Armstrong will skip the Razorbacks' bowl game. The destination isn't yet known. Armstrong led the Southeastern Conference in both receptions (78) and receiving yards (1,140) but caught just one touchdown in 11 games this season. His catches and yardage were both second-most in Arkansas history behind Cobi Hamilton, who had 90 receptions for 1,335 yards in 2012. "It's been a journey for the books and I wouldn't trade it for anything because it has made me into the man I am today," Armstrong said of his Razorbacks tenure in a social media post. "... I will never forget all the moments that were shared here in Fayetteville." Armstrong played two seasons at Texas A&M-Commerce before transferring to Arkansas ahead of the 2023 season. In two seasons with the Razorbacks, he caught 134 passes for 1,904 yards and six scores. --Field Level MediaDonald Trump ’s picks for a second term Cabinet were supposed to illuminate what a MAGA presidency free of guardrails would look like. Many of his picks have been surprising, some controversial . His initial announcements were giveaways to his base — Matt Gaetz, then Pam Bondi for AG; Tulsi Gabbard for director of national intelligence ; RFK Jr at HHS . But as the process continues , one familiar theme has emerged: the willingness of the incoming president to spurn committed right-wing ideologues within his party . The first clue was his selection of Marco Rubio to lead the State Department. A relatively centrist Republican senator who is a supporter of military aid to Ukraine and Israel, Rubio’s pick was seen as a blow to the isolationist wing of the party, which Trump has long been seen as championing. The Florida senator is facing accusations of being a “neocon” from the likes of Alex Jones, Ron Paul, and even RFK Jr, who The Hill reports is lobbying Trump to select someone else for the job. Rubio is just one nominee. But several of Trump’s other Cabinet -level picks are also rankling people who were hoping that a Trump victory would mean a return to power for a vision of the American right wing that never took into account the realities of MAGA-world and Trump himself. The Republican Party still struggles to wrestle with how Trump-style populism — sometimes isolationist, sometimes pro-labor, and infrequently consistent — fits in to the GOP ’s overall ideology. And vice versa. Scott Bessent’s nomination for Treasury is another key example. His selection on Friday came despite public lobbying against him specifically carried out by Elon Musk and murmurs about his connections to Democrat-supporting billionaire George Soros on the right. Other Republican figures have sounded off over his pick to run the Labor Department, Lori Chavez-DeRemer, over her support for the union-boosting Pro Act. But maybe Trump’s worst transgression against the far-right: his pick for Surgeon General. Yes: what is typically an apolitical appointment is now provoking rage among two key groups of voters who backed the incoming president in 2024, the anti-mask, anti-lockdown Covid-skeptic crowd (in all its various shades), and the anti-abortion evangelical and Catholic right. Many of the former crowd in particular gravitated towards Ron DeSantis in the 2024 GOP primary after he emerged as a vocal opponent of mask mandates and other public health guidelines while serving as Florida’s governor in 2020 and 2021. Dr Janette Nesheiwat’s nomination enrages both camps. A clip of Nesheiwat appearing on the Fox Business Network is spreading in right-wing circles; in the video, she expresses support for Facebook’s efforts to tamp down on vaccine and Covid conspiracies — a huge no-no for a segment of the population which adamantly refused to comply with mask mandates, social distancing requirements and protested the closure of schools when the virus was killing hundreds of thousands of Americans. Her Twitter/X post serving as the announcement of her intended appointment was immediately besieged by Trump supporters demanding that she refuse the position. “Watch your step, Janette. We don’t trust you,” wrote The Blaze host Sara Gonzales. If this feels familiar, it’s because Donald Trump has spent the past year making various decisions and statements which similarly enraged or otherwise spun up various groups of voters that make up the right flank of the GOP. That same willingness to disappoint hardline conservative Republicans — at least, the ones who pay attention to the day-to-day of the political news cycle — was evident throughout the 2024 campaign. The anti-abortion right frequently takes the brunt of it; Trump spurned them, and former rival DeSantis, when he refused to endorse Florida’s six-week abortion ban. His stance against legislation to ban abortion at the federal level angered that group, too. But the comparatively uncontroversial selections for Cabinet positions following a few initial outliers raises another question: is the president-elect attempting to build political capital with the Senate? And for what purpose? With the Trump administration reportedly plotting a massive day-one push on immigration, one that will likely rely on Congress in some form for changes to law and funding which can only be provided through the Legislative Branch, we may have that answer in the weeks ahead.

SM Group ‘cautiously optimistic’ for 2025World number one Luke Humphries continued his bid for back-to-back World Championship titles after easing through to the last 16. While there was high drama in Alexandra Palace on the first day back after the Christmas break, where Damon Heta threw a nine-dart finish, Humphries enjoyed a serene evening. He beat Nick Kenny 4-0 to set up a mouth-watering fourth-round meeting with two-time champion Peter Wright. Kenny was unable to produce the form that saw him beat Raymond van Barneveld in the previous round and Humphries did not need to be anywhere near his best. “It was one of those games I didn’t want to take for granted,” he said. “I expected a tough game and I wasn’t firing, I felt there is so much more to give, I felt there was more to come out of me. “I didn’t want to give anyone an inch because they can take a mile. “I’m not going to give up this world title without a fight, I wasn’t at my best but when someone pushes me I know I can come up with the goods.” Earlier in the day Heta set the tournament alight on its resumption with a stunning nine-dart finish before bowing out. The Australian, seeded ninth, achieved darting perfection in the second set of his match with Luke Woodhouse to earn a cool £60,000 payday. However, his joy was short-lived as Woodhouse won a thrilling battle 4-3, having trailed 3-1. Heta was millimetres away from throwing a nine-darter in the previous round when he missed the double 12, but he made no mistake this time in the first match after the Christmas break. Heta’s feat was the second time a nine-darter has been thrown in the 2025 tournament and the 16th of all time at the World Championship, following Christian Kist’s effort before Christmas. As well as landing the Australian a hefty payday, it also saw a lucky fan in Ally Pally win a £60,000, with £60,000 also being donated to Prostate Cancer UK. There were several other titanic battles, none better than Gerwyn Price’s sudden-death leg victory over Joe Cullen. Price looked like he was going to have an easy night when he coasted into a 3-0 lead, but Cullen hit back to send it to a decider, which went all the way. Cullen landed a ‘Big Fish’ 170 checkout to send the tie to a sudden-death leg on his throw but Price hit some big numbers to steal victory. “That was tough, I just wanted to get over the winning line,” he said during his on-stage interview. “He kept coming back, the crowd were way behind him. “I thought I was going to lose, but I kept in there right to the end and got the win. “He played some good darts at the right times. I put myself in that position, I got myself out of it and I’m still in.” Seventh seed Jonny Clayton also battled to victory after squandering a 3-0 lead against Daryl Gurney. Gurney then had six darts to send the decider to a tiebreaker but lost his nerve and Clayton stole a 4-3 win. Stephen Bunting and Peter Wright, who was suffering from a chest infection, enjoyed much more safe passages with routine wins over Madars Razma and Jermaine Wattimena respectively.

( ), a titan in the automotive parts industry, has seen a mix of ups and downs lately, but its story is far from over. As of writing, the stock is hovering around $62.64, a modest gain of 0.43% on the day, though still down significantly from its 52-week high of $79.98 set earlier this year. This puts Magna stock at an interesting crossroads. So, what can investors expect? Recent performance Magna stock has been weighed down by broader market uncertainty and industry challenges. Yet, it remains a giant with all the tools needed to stage a strong comeback. In its third-quarter earnings, Magna stock announced sales of $10.3 billion, a 4% year-over-year decline that admittedly raised some eyebrows. The company’s adjusted earnings per share of $1.28 fell short of analyst expectations of $1.40, and Magna lowered its full-year sales guidance slightly, now expecting revenue between $42.2 billion and $43.2 billion. The tempered outlook reflects ongoing headwinds like slowing vehicle production in certain markets and higher input costs. Yet, beneath the surface, Magna’s resilience shines through. Historically, Magna stock has been a powerhouse. Over the past five years, it remained a fixture on the Fortune Global 500 list, an accolade that speaks volumes about its global scale and influence. As one of the largest automotive suppliers in the world, Magna stock has its hands in nearly every corner of the car manufacturing process. From body exteriors to advanced driver-assistance systems. The company’s partnerships with major automakers solidified its position as an industry linchpin. Yes, the stock has struggled in recent months. Yet Magna stock has weathered storms before, and its track record suggests it knows how to navigate challenging terrain. What to watch Looking ahead, the future holds significant promise for Magna stock. The automotive industry is in the middle of a revolution driven by , advanced driver-assistance systems, and autonomous driving technologies. Magna stock has been investing heavily in cutting-edge technology, positioning itself as a leader in the future of mobility. Recent moves, like its acquisition of Veoneer’s Active Safety division, underscore this commitment. By strengthening its portfolio in safety and autonomous technologies, Magna stock aligns itself with where the industry is headed, not where it’s been. Financially, Magna stock is a fortress. With a market capitalization of around $17.9 billion at writing and a trailing price-to-earnings ratio of 11.69, the stock looks relatively undervalued compared to broader market benchmarks. What makes Magna stock particularly attractive to investors, though, is its dividend. The company currently offers a forward annual dividend yield of 4.27% at writing. This is not only generous but also sustainable, with a payout ratio hovering around 50%. For income-focused investors, Magna’s combination of reliable dividends and long-term potential makes it a particularly enticing option. While short-term volatility might scare some off, those with a long-term perspective can appreciate Magna stock’s solid financial footing. Plus, it has the ability to generate consistent cash flow even during challenging periods. Bottom line While recent earnings hiccups might cause some investors to feel hesitant, it’s important to view Magna stock in the context of the broader market and industry trends. The automotive sector as a whole has faced headwinds, including supply chain disruptions and rising costs. Yet those challenges are temporary. The underlying demand for vehicles, particularly electric and connected cars, is only growing. Magna stock’s ability to innovate and adapt puts it in a prime position to benefit from this demand as automakers increasingly rely on its expertise and technology. The next few years could see Magna emerge as an even bigger player in the global automotive supply chain. Ultimately, Magna International represents a blend of stability and future growth. Magna stock is an attractive pick for investors looking to ride the wave of automotive innovation while securing reliable income through dividends. Yes, the stock has had a rough patch, but its long-term prospects remain as strong as ever. In a world where the automotive industry is reinventing itself, Magna stock isn’t just keeping up. It’s leading the way. If you’re looking for a company with solid fundamentals, innovative leadership, and a clear vision for the future, buying Magna stock might just be the easiest decision you’ll make this year.

In a moment of national sorrow, former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has passed away at the age of 92 due to age-related medical conditions. The announcement was made by the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Delhi, where Singh had been receiving treatment in recent days. According to the statement released by AIIMS, Singh was found unconscious at his residence earlier today, December 26, 2024. “He was promptly administered resuscitative measures at home and brought to the AIIMS medical emergency at 8:06 pm,” the statement said. Despite all efforts to revive him, he was declared dead at 9:51 pm. Manmohan Singh, who served as the Prime Minister of India for two consecutive terms from 2004 to 2014, was a towering figure in Indian politics. His tenure is marked by his leadership in the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government. He was widely recognized for his calm and intellectual approach to governance, though it was his role as Finance Minister in the early 1990s that cemented his legacy as one of India’s most influential political figures. Singh’s role in the landmark economic reforms of 1991, which included liberalizing India’s economy, reducing trade barriers, and opening the doors to foreign investment, is often credited with saving the country from economic collapse. These reforms transformed India’s economic landscape, setting the stage for its rapid growth in the subsequent decades. In the wake of his passing, tributes poured in from across the political spectrum. Congress leaders Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and Sonia Gandhi arrived at AIIMS soon after the news of Singh’s hospitalization became known. Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge and party MP Rahul Gandhi, currently in Belagavi for a Congress Working Committee meeting, are en route back to Delhi, according to reports. Singh’s death marks the end of an era in Indian politics. He is survived by his wife, Gurcharan Singh, and their three daughters. Known for his humble and dignified nature, Singh’s contributions to India’s economic transformation will continue to resonate for generations to come. Much as many supporters of President-elect Donald Trump did after the 2020 election, some supporters of Vice President Kamala Harris are demanding recounts in key states in a bid to verify or even overturn the result. They are scrutinizing election results for signs of tampering, questioning whether election machines flipped votes and wondering whether digital technology could have injected fake votes.288 bet365

Political wrangling in India as US charges billionaire Gautam Adani with bribery and fraud

Jerusalem: Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu 's legal team has requested a 15-day postponement for the start of his testimony in his ongoing criminal trial, Israeli media reported on Sunday. The team argued that despite its best efforts, it will not be ready by the scheduled date of December 2, the report said. The request followed an earlier one by the team for a 10-week delay, which the court rejected on November 13, citing that Netanyahu had already been given five months to prepare for the trial since the date was set in July. The team said since the court's rejection, it had been working intensively with Netanyahu for preparation, including holding daily late-night meetings, but will still not be adequately prepared to begin testimony as scheduled, according to the media report. The International Criminal Court's recent issuance of an arrest warrant for Netanyahu on charges of "crimes against humanity and war crimes" between at least October 8, 2023 and May 20, 2024, has further complicated its ability to prepare, the team said. The trial, which began in early 2020, involves three separate cases in which Netanyahu is accused of accepting bribes, fraud and breach of trust. Netanyahu, Israel's longest-serving Prime Minister, has denied any wrongdoing, calling the trial a politically-motivated "witch hunt", Xinhua news agency reported. After more than a two-month pause due to the Israel-Hamas conflict, Netanyahu's trial resumed in early December 2023. If convicted, Netanyahu is expected to face severe penalties, including imprisonment, which would make him the first incumbent Israeli Prime Minister sentenced for criminal offences.
