In addition to doing good for individuals or organizations, volunteering in later life has many personal benefits, and that’s for the volunteer. Here are a few reasons to volunteer: Promotes physical and mental health. We know aging ultimately is a declining and gradual process. Volunteering can counter the risk of decline of one’s physical health, reducing risks of hypertension, cardiovascular disease, cognitive impairment and even mortality. That’s according to the American Journal of Preventive Medicine . The National Institute on Aging reports that volunteering also can affect cognitive aging by keeping the brain engaged, thereby lowering the risk of dementia. Prevents loneliness. Social isolation is a major challenge for many older adults and is considered a public health crisis , according to the U.S. Surgeon General. Volunteering can be part of the solution by providing opportunities to socialize and even make best friends. It can support those suffering from depression. Those who volunteer report their depression is shorter compared to those who do not volunteer, according to the Corporation for National and Community Service . Provides a feeling of purpose. For many, retirement can be a period of relief and at the same time, uncertainty about one’s purpose. In the workplace, purpose typically is well defined. In retirement, not so much. The German government pledged Sunday to fully investigate whether there were security lapses before the Christmas market car-ramming attack that killed five people and injured over 200. Political pressure has built on the question of potential missed warnings about Saudi suspect Taleb al-Abdulmohsen, a 50-year-old psychiatrist who had made online deaths threats and previously had trouble with the law. Interior Minister Nancy Faeser and the heads of Germany's domestic and foreign intelligence services are due to answer questions at parliamentary committee hearings on December 30, a senior lawmaker told AFP. Faeser vowed Sunday that "no stone will be left unturned" in shedding light on what information had been available to security services ahead of last Friday's bloody attack in the eastern city of Magdeburg. She stressed that the attacker did "not fit any previous pattern" because "he acted like an Islamist terrorist although ideologically he was clearly an enemy of Islam". Abdulmohsen has in the past called himself a "Saudi atheist" who helped women flee Gulf countries and charged Germany was doing too little to help them. In online posts, he also strongly criticised Germany for allowing in too many Muslim refugees and backed far-right conspiracy theories about the "Islamisation" of Europe. In one post, he wrote: "Is there a path to justice in Germany without blowing up a German embassy or randomly slaughtering German citizens?... If anyone knows it, please let me know." News magazine Der Spiegel, citing security sources, said the Saudi secret service had warned Germany's spy agency BND a year ago about a tweet in which Abdulmohsen threatened Germany would pay a "price" for how it treated Saudi refugees. Die Welt daily reported, also citing security sources, that German state and federal police had carried out a "risk assessment" on Abdulmohsen last year but concluded that he posed "no specific danger". The far-right AfD called for a special session of parliament, and the head of the far-left BSW party, Sahra Wagenknecht, demanded that Faeser explain "why so many tips and warnings were ignored beforehand". Mass-circulation daily Bild asked: "Why did our police and intelligence services do nothing, even though they had the Saudi on their radar?... And why were the tips from Saudi Arabia apparently ignored?" It charged that "German authorities usually only find out about attack plans in time when foreign services warn them" and called for sweeping reforms after the election for a complete "turnaround in internal security". Senior MP Dirk Wiese of Scholz's Social Democrats said the December 30 hearings will summon the heads of the BND, the domestic intelligence service BfV and the Office for Migration and Refugees. Media meanwhile reported more details on Abdulmohsen, who had worked at a clinic that treats offenders with substance addiction problems, but had been on sick leave since late October. What Happened: Trump has promised to put tariffs on countries like China, Mexico and Canada when he is inaugurated as president in January, a move that has several sectors on high alert as they brace for the impact and likely pass the higher costs onto consumers. One of the companies that could feel the brunt of the 25% tariff on Mexican imports is Constellation Brands STZ , an alcohol company that holds the exclusive U.S license for several of the top imported beer brands in America. Constellation imports brands like Modelo, Corona and Pacifico from Mexico where they are brewed by Grupo Modelo, which is a unit of Anheuser-Busch InBev SA BUD . Data from Statista lists Modelo as the top imported beer in the United States for 2024, with Corona ranking second on the list. Heineken and Dos Equis XX, which are imported by Heineken USA, a unit of Heineken NV HEINY , rank third and fourth on the list respectively. Dos Equis is manufactured in Mexico and imported to the U.S. Modelo is the top-selling beer in America, as reported by USA Today. The beer passed Bud Light for the crown in May 2023 and has maintained the market share lead. The beer company manufactures all of its beer in Mexico, as reported by CNBC. Beer made up 86% of the company's revenue for the first half of 2024. A 25% tariff on Mexican imports could raise Constellation's cost of goods sold by around 16%, according to Wells Fargo analyst Chris Carey. Analysts expect Constellation to raise prices to offset the impact from the tariffs. While other companies could opt to move manufacturing to the U.S. to offset the impact of the tariffs, Constellation might be stuck. The company has to produce beer brands like Modelo and Corona where AB InBev makes them, as part of an antitrust settlement between the U.S. Department of Justice, AB InBev and Grupo Modelo. Trump previously proposed a 5% tariff on Mexican imports with plans to raise the amount to 25%, but those tariffs were not put in place previously according to the report. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum suggested tariffs on American goods imported to Mexico in response to Trump's plan. "One tariff will be followed by another in response, and so on until we put common companies at risk," Sheinbaum said. Sheinbaum highlighted American automakers in her comments. The comments from Trump and Sheinbaum could see tensions escalate between the U.S. and Mexico and a potential trade war taking place. Consumers would likely be the losers in such a battle and drinking beers that come from Mexico will likely cost Americans more in the coming months.
