One of the hardest questions to answer is a deceptively simple one: who are you? But this is precisely the question that “reminiscence” or “life review” therapies, which draw on autobiographical memory, looks to answer. It’s normal to think about our past or to relive memories in conversations with friends, but it is rare to do so in a considered, intentional way. In 2022, Jane Fonda spoke about conducting a life review after turning 60, telling Glamour , “it totally changed the way I thought about myself and about how I wanted to live the last third of my life”. But whether you’re 60 or 16, looking backwards can be a useful exercise in building purpose and meaning into your present and future. Credit: iStock What is reminiscence therapy? Reminiscence therapy is an umbrella term that encompasses a range of therapeutic approaches. David Hallford, a senior lecturer at Deakin University’s School of Psychology, says most therapy, “either implicitly or explicitly draws on memory”. “But reminiscence therapy is particularly focused on retrieving, reflecting on and reframing experiences into our understanding of ourselves.” Broadly speaking, he says reminiscence focuses on specific themes, like relationships, loss or challenges faced. Life review, on the other hand, is about a more systematic approach to reflecting on experiences across a whole lifetime. And reminiscence is about more than just mapping the big beats in our lives. Sunil Bhar, a professor of psychology at Swinburne University of Technology, says: “It’s not simply about documenting things, like where someone lived or who they married, where they end up with what is essentially a resume of their life. “We’ve discovered that what’s therapeutic about going back over someone’s life is not what they did, but who they are .” Reminiscence, he says, can help people answer the tricky question of “who are you?” “The most common answer to [this question] is, ‘I am a student’, ‘I am a daughter’, ‘I’m a son’; you talk about yourself in terms of the roles that you played in your life,” he says. “So reminiscence is a way of getting to the values that have been driving those roles and those life decisions.” What are its benefits? Research on reminiscence therapy has focused mostly on its benefits for older people, where it’s been shown to improve things like depression and life satisfaction . For people with dementia, reminiscence therapy can help create a sense of agency and improve mental health and cognition. Research has also found it can lessen the effects of anxiety and depression and that it can improve quality of life for cancer patients . However, an emerging body of research shows that reflecting on our lives can be beneficial at any age. Hallford’s research focuses on the benefits of life review , particularly for young adults. He thinks a lack of research is partly for cultural reasons, where there is the “preconception of sitting around and thinking about the good old days as a task of older adulthood, when we are not necessarily completing as many big life tasks like getting our careers started or having kids”. But the benefits of reminiscence therapy in older adults are much the same for younger ones. Research has shown reminiscence therapy to improve levels of self-esteem , confidence, optimism and life satisfaction . One small study led by Hallford this year found guided recall and interpretation of autobiographical memories helped improve young adults’ self-perception and views of others. Used in clinical settings, it has also been shown to reduce depression and anxiety, where it’s often part of a program involving cognitive behaviour therapy. Three great questions to ask How it works Typically, reminiscence therapy is conducted by a psychologist, either in a group setting or one on one. To explore this kind of therapy, you can chat to your GP, counsellor or psychologist. But you can still reap the benefits by reflecting on the past in a less structured way with friends or family. “There is a sense in the literature that maybe what is therapeutic about reminiscence therapy isn’t the outpouring of memories, but really it’s having someone listen,” says Bhar. “It brings the idea that what we’re really after is a human connection, and reminiscence is simply a way of eliciting that.” Hallford says journaling or voice recordings can help with this. It’s also common to use physical objects or music to prompt memories. Bhar says photographs can be a good starting point for talking about the past. B.C. Premier David Eby said B.C. needs a "lot more juice" as his government announced nine new wind-energy projects worth billions and expected to power half a million homes by no later than 2031. Eby framed Monday's (Dec. 9) announcement as a response to other jurisdictions said to be retreating from clean energy projects. He was joined by several cabinet ministers and BC Hydro's president and chief executive officer Chris O'Riley in announcing the winner's of BC Hydro's first competitive call for power in 15 years. The event was held at BC Hydro headquarters in Vancouver. "The political message is the message to all British Columbians, that our government will not let us get left behind in a low carbon future," he said. "We are going to take all the steps we can to secure that advantage, including using our clean electricity, to ensure that we are a world leader in the inevitable zero-carbon future we are moving towards." He also promised that the projects – four in northern B.C., four in southern B.C. and one Vancouver Island – represent a new approach toward permitting that will "protect our environment, but also protect our prosperity" as none of the nine projects will undergo environmental assessments. "Going forward, you will see more and more permitting reform going forward, not less," he said. "This is the first announcement in a series of how we are going to do this work and for projects like this, getting them built, getting them up and in the ground, will protect our environment." The call issued in April 2024 requested proposals for 3,000 gigawatt hours per year as part of a larger plan to help meet provincial energy needs. Forecasts predict a 15-per-cent increase in power demand between now and 2030. Factors behind the riding demand include population growth; increased industrial development, including mining; growth in zero-emission vehicles; rising use of fuel pumps in private residences; and more people working from home. Ultimately, BC Hydro received 21 proposals totalling more than 9,000 GWh/year with the winning nine projects said to produce 5,000 GWh/year in boosting production by about eight per cent – three per cent higher than the original call. O'Riley said BC Hydro will issue additional calls for power in the future, without revealing details about the specific timing and nature of those future calls. "We expect to conduct regular competitive calls for power about every two years based on demand," he said. "I would expect there to be a continued need for renewable energy sources," O'Riley added. "As the Premier says, we're agnostic about the particular source of that – just that it meets the renewable and clean requirements." The nine projects are said to represent anywhere between $4 and $6 billion in private sector investment with about half of this amount linked to First Nations, who hold majority stakes in eight of the nine projects. First Nations hold 49 per cent ownership in the ninth one. B.C.'s Energy and Climate Solutions Minister Adrian Dix noted the historic nature of these ownership structures in framing these projects as part and parcel of economic reconciliation. Dix also justified the lack of environmental assessments with the need to flight climate change. "We need urgent action on climate change -- this is urgent action on climate change," he said. The 39th president of the United States, who died at age 100 on Sunday, transformed the Middle East by brokering the Camp David Accords, which established an enduring and once inconceivable peace between Israel and its most serious adversary at the time, Egypt. Carter again brought a sense of righteousness and nearly obsessive attention to detail to negotiate the return of the Panama Canal to Panama, defying furor by US conservatives. In two decisions with lengthy reverberations, Carter followed up on Richard Nixon’s opening by recognizing communist China, and he began arming jihadists in Afghanistan who fought back against the Soviet Union, which would collapse a decade later. But Carter was crushed by Ronald Reagan in the 1980 election in no small part due to foreign affairs after religious hard-liners toppled Iran’s shah and seized US embassy staff, whose 444 days in captivity were broadcast nightly on US television. Carter ordered an aborted rescue mission in which eight US troops died in a helicopter crash. Asked at a 2015 news conference about his biggest regret, Carter replied: “I wish I’d sent one more helicopter to get the hostages — and we would have rescued them and I would have been reelected.” – Nagging ‘weak’ attack – The Iran debacle led to attacks that Carter was “weak,” an image he would struggle to shake off as Republicans cast him as the archetypal contrast to their muscular brand of foreign policy. The former peanut farmer’s public persona did little to help, from a widely panned speech pleading for shared sacrifice to an incident that went the pre-internet version of viral in which Carter shooed away a confrontational rabbit from his fishing boat. Robert Strong, a professor at Washington and Lee University who wrote a book on Carter’s foreign policy, said the late president had been inept in public relations by allowing the “weak” label to stick. “The people who worked with Carter said exactly the opposite — he was stubborn, fiercely independent and anything but weak,” Strong said. “That doesn’t mean he was always right, but he wasn’t someone who held his finger in the wind allowing whatever the current opinion was to win.” Strong said that Carter defied his political advisors and even his wife Rosalynn by pushing quickly on the Panama Canal, convinced of the injustice of the 1903 treaty that gave the meddlesome United States the zone in perpetuity. “Every president says, ‘I don’t care about public opinion, I’ll really do what’s right,'” Strong said. “Most of the time when they say that, it’s not true. To a surprising extent with Carter, it was true.” – Carter and Iran – Carter, a devout Christian, vowed to elevate human rights after the cold realpolitik of Nixon and Henry Kissinger. Years after the fact, he could name political prisoners freed following his intervention in their cases, and took pride in coaxing the Soviet Union to let thousands of Jewish citizens emigrate. But the rights focus came to a head on Iran when Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi — a Western ally whose autocratic rule by decree brought economic and social modernization — faced growing discontent. Reflecting debate throughout the administration, Zbigniew Brzezinski, Carter’s more hawkish national security advisor, believed the shah should crush the protests — a time-tested model in the Middle East. Secretary of state Cyrus Vance, who would later quit in opposition to the ill-fated helicopter raid, wanted reforms by the shah. Stuart Eizenstat, a top adviser to Carter, acknowledged mistakes on Iran, which the president had called an “island of stability” on a New Year’s Eve visit a little more than a year before the revolution that ultimately saw the shah flee the country. But Eizenstat said Carter could not have known how much the shah had lost support or that he was to die from cancer within months. “It was the single worst intelligence failure in American history,” Eizenstat said in 2018 as he presented a book assessing Carter as a success. – Peacemaker legacy – Uniquely among modern US presidents, much of Carter’s legacy came after he left the White House. He won the Nobel Peace Prize more than two decades after his defeat at the polls. The Carter Center, which he established in his home state of Georgia, has championed democracy and global health, observing elections in dozens of countries and virtually eradicating guinea worm, a painful infectious parasite. Carter also took risks that few others of his stature would. He paid a landmark visit to North Korea in 1994, helping avert conflict, and infuriated Israel by asking if its treatment of the Palestinians constituted “apartheid.” But the accusations of weakness never went away. Conservative academic William Russell Mead, in a 2010 essay in Foreign Policy magazine, called on then-president Barack Obama to avoid “Carter Syndrome,” which he described as “weakness and indecision” and “incoherence and reversals.” Carter personally responded in a letter that listed accomplishments on the Camp David accords, China, the Soviet Union and human rights, while describing the fall of Iran’s shah as “obviously unpredictable.” “Although it is true that we did not become involved in military combat during my presidency, I do not consider this a sign of weakness or reason for apology,” he wrote. Coming into the 2024 season, the Tennessee Titans made it very clear that the plan on offense was to have Tony Pollard and Tyjae Spears split carries in the backfield. Part of the reason Tennessee let Derrick Henry walk in free agency was to have a dynamic running back duo that complimented each other well and were "interchangeable" on offense. Pollard is an established veteran that came to the Titans off of back-to-back seasons with 1,000+ rushing yards with the Dallas Cowboys. Spears is a second-year player drafted in the third round of the 2024 NFL Draft. But the split carry approach was very quickly abandoned by Tennessee. Pollard has been given the lion's share of carries this season with 213, which far outweighs the 50 rushes from Spears. While Spears missed four games due to injury, there's still a clear imbalance when both backs are healthy. Split Carries With the draft capital invested into Spears by Ran Carthon, it's odd to see the Titans be so willing to take his touches away. Head coach Brian Callahan helped shed some light on why that has been the case during his media availability on Friday. "It's two factors. It's Tony [Pollard] has played fantastic. It's hard to argue that he doesn't deserve to be the featured back in terms of the number of carries. He's been awesome. And the Tyjae's injuries," said Callahan. "I didn't know whether or not Tony was up for that type of load to be honest, and he's shown that he is, but it has been out of necessity." Callahan continued to say that he would still like to have Spears involved in the offense moving forward. It's ideal for the Titans to have the pair of running backs playing together. But Pollard has undoubtedly earned his role as RB1. "He's as tough as they come. He runs like a big man. He runs hard and runs through contact. He has proven to be a whole lot more than even I thought how productive he could be," said Callahan. Pollard is 63 rushing yards away from surpassing 1,000 for the third consecutive year. He is 70 yard away from setting a new career best. Pollard is under contract with the Titans through 2026. I'll find it interesting to see how Tennessee approaches the running back position moving forward and if Spears can get back into the mix more consistently when he's fully healthy in 2025.
