When Texas A&M head coach Mike Elko met with quarterback Conner Weigman yesterday, he told his third-year signal-caller he had an idea what was coming. Weigman announced he will enter the transfer portal when it opens next Monday. Elko said he thinks this is the right move for Weigman’s future and career, but added he has respect for the way Weigman handled the situation. “I think the way he handled what was an extremely challenging situation for him, to come into year as the starter, to first deal with an injury, to come back and have the high of the Missouri game, to then maybe not have it go the way you want it to go, to lose the job but to stay a consummate pro, to be a great teammate, to be a great Aggie, to be there supporting his brothers all the way to the end,” Elko said. A&M had high hopes for Weigman when he signed as a five-star prospect as part of the Aggies’ top-ranked class of 2022. The signal-caller from Cypress wasn’t able to lead A&M to the greatness many hoped he would, though, during a three-year tenure that at times was sidetracked with injuries. Weigman entered the 2024 season as A&M’s unquestioned starter, missed three games due to a shoulder injury, but was benched eight games into the season after he struggled against LSU. Backup Marcel Reed led the Aggies to a comeback win and proceeded to start A&M’s final four games. The situation didn’t make Weigman’s move unexpected. Elko doubled down on his gratitude for Weigman when he discussed the decision during his early signing period press conference on Wednesday. “Had we needed to call his number at any point this year, he would’ve been ready and that’s not an easy thing for a kid to do,” Elko said. A&M’s backup quarterback Jaylen Henderson also announced he would transfer on Tuesday night. Elko said while Henderson helped the 2023 team win some games down the stretch of the season, he was unable to get going with the new staff. Henderson did not see the field in 2024. “Another great character kid,” Elko said of Henderson. “Was there every day, brought tremendous energy to the practice field and to the room, so I appreciate him and what he did, and I hope both of those guys land somewhere and have a tremendous amount of success the rest of their career.” Currently, A&M will return Reed and Miles O’Neill at quarterback from its 2024 roster. The Aggies signed Florida four-star quarterback Brady Hart on Wednesday, and also hold a pledge from Montgomery Lake Creek three-star quarterback Eli Morcos. “It’s still early in terms of our plans moving forward,” Elko said, “but obviously something we’ve got to figure out and address.”
