In their final fixture of 2024, Kai Havertz scored the only goal of the game midway through the opening period. Arsenal’s victory takes them back to within six points of leaders Liverpool, having played one match more than the Reds, and a point clear of Chelsea following their Boxing Day defeat to Fulham. Ipswich, although much improved in the second half, have now lost five of their last six games, and remain just one place off the bottom of the table, three points away from safety. 🎯 pic.twitter.com/hDd5bkHwXr — Arsenal (@Arsenal) December 27, 2024 Mikel Arteta’s men have been rocked by Bukayo Saka’s hamstring injury which could keep the England winger, who has nine goals and 13 assists this season, out of action for the next two months. Gabriel Martinelli was handed the unenviable task of filling Saka’s shoes on Arsenal’s right-hand side and the Brazilian was involved in the only goal of the evening. The Ipswich defence failed to deal with Martinelli’s cross, with the ball falling to Leandro Trossard on the opposite side of the area. Trossard fought his way to the byline before fizzing his cross into the box for Havertz to convert from a matter of yards. It was Havertz’s third goal in four matches, his 12th of the season, and no less than the hosts, who at that stage of the match had enjoyed a staggering 91.4 per cent of the possession, deserved. Heading into Friday’s fixture, Arsenal had lost only one of their last 75 Premier League games when they had opened the scoring, and their triumph here rarely looked in doubt following Havertz’s strike. Three points that take Arsenal into second 🪜 #ARSIPS pic.twitter.com/Dx3s6XlwQ2 — Premier League (@premierleague) December 27, 2024 Havertz thought he had doubled Arsenal’s lead with 34 minutes gone when he converted Gabriel Jesus’ cross. But Jesus – handed his third successive start for the first time in a year – strayed into an offside position in the build-up. When referee Darren England blew for half-time, Ipswich had failed to touch the ball in Arsenal’s box, becoming just the second side to do so in the Premier League this season. Nottingham Forest were the other, away at Liverpool, before they went on to inflict Arne Slot’s sole defeat of his tenure so far. And for all of Arsenal’s possession, while they held just a one-goal advantage, Ipswich knew they were still in the game. An encouraging start to the second half for the Tractor Boys ensued, albeit without testing David Raya in the Arsenal goal. Shortly after the hour mark, Gabriel should have settled any growing Emirates nerves when he arrived unmarked to Declan Rice’s corner, but the defender headed wide of Arijanet Muric’s post when it looked easier to score. Just over an hour on the clock. #ARSIPS pic.twitter.com/JXNipX1J1Z — IPSWICH TOWN (@IpswichTown) December 27, 2024 Martin Odegaard then forced a fine fingertip save from Muric at his near post after a mazy run and shot from the Arsenal skipper. Rice’s stinging goal-bound volley from the following corner was blocked by Dara O’Shea as Arsenal pushed for a game-killing second. Havertz should have tapped home Trossard’s header but he fluffed his lines. And moments later, substitute Mikel Merino’s effort was diverted from danger by a diving Muric. Ipswich looked to catch Arsenal on the counter, but the match ended without them registering a single effort on Raya’s goal. Ipswich fans goaded their opponents with chants of “boring, boring Arsenal”, but it was the Gunners who enjoyed the last laugh as they saw out 2024 with a win which keeps the pressure on Liverpool.

This rally also marked the second-highest single-day increase in market capitalisation, surging by an impressive Rs526 billion. The bullish momentum, driven by a cooling political climate in Islamabad, pushed the index to a new milestone, closing above the 99,000 mark for the first time. Market analysts are abuzz with optimism, predicting the index is on the cusp of breaching the coveted six-figure threshold. The Pakistan Stock Exchange’s (PSX) benchmark KSE 100 Index surged by a record 4,695.09 points or 4.96 per cent to 99,269.25 points against 94,574.16 points recorded in the last session. The highest index of the day remained at 99,549.81 points while the lowest level was recorded at 97,188.28 points. Analyst Maaz Mulla at Topline Securities said the bulls staged a remarkable recovery as the KSE-100 Index soared to an intraday high of 4,975 points, recording the largest single-day gain in its history. This impressive rally followed yesterday’s sharp downturn, with the index closing at 99,269 -- up by 4,695 points or 4.96 per cent. “The market’s positive sentiment was largely driven by the opposition party’s decision to end its protest in the capital city [in the early hours of Wednesday],” he said. This shift marked a complete reversal from Tuesday’s turmoil, where the benchmark KSE-100 Index experienced its biggest single-day drop. In an extraordinary recovery, the market rebounded, fully offsetting and surpassing the previous session’s losses. In terms of market capitalisation, Tuesday’s decline of Rs480 billion was followed by an exceptional increase of Rs526 billion Wednesday, marking the second-highest single-day surge in history. The trading floor witnessed robust buying activity, with the index-heavy banking sector leading the charge. Other significant contributors included automobile assemblers, oil and gas exploration companies, oil marketing companies (OMCs) and power generation firms. Top contributors to the index’s upward trajectory were FFC, HBL, SYS, BAHL, and PPL, collectively adding 1,546 points. The KSE-30 index increased by 1,587.57 points or 5.39 per cent to 31,032.39 points against 29,444.82 points. Ahsan Mehanti, an analyst at Arif Habib Corp, said, “Stocks closed to a new all-time high led by scrips across the board after the PTI ended protests in the capital, easing political noise and concerns for security unrest.” He said that upbeat economic indicators, speculations over likely lower CPI inflation for November and rupee stability played a catalyst role in the bullish activity. The highest increase was recorded in Unilever Pakistan Foods Limited, which rose by Rs348.78 to Rs19,368.13 per share, followed by Rafhan Maize Products Company Limited, which increased by Rs175.27 to Rs7,988.75 per share. A significant decline was noted in Pakistan Services Limited, which fell by Rs50.29 to Rs827.72 per share; Sapphire Textile Mills Limited followed it, which closed lower by Rs26.35 to Rs1,151.64 per share. Analyst Mubashir Anis Naviwala at JS Global said the PSX rebounded strongly, recovering sharply from Tuesday’s panic-driven selloff. “Investor activity picked up significantly, fuelled by easing political tensions, with robust gains seen across the board,” he said. “Renewed investor optimism, supported by improving macroeconomic indicators and declining fixed-income yields, signals a sustained bullish outlook for the equity market.” BO Punjab remained the volume leader with 114.966 million shares which closed higher by Re1 to Rs7.85 per share. Hascol Petrol followed it with 106.286 million shares, which closed lower by Re1 to Rs12.59 per share. COLUMBIA, South Carolina (AP) — Victims' families and others affected by crimes that resulted in federal death row convictions shared a range of emotions on Monday, from relief to anger, after President Joe Biden commuted dozens of the sentences . Biden converted the sentences of 37 federal death row inmates to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole. The inmates include people who were convicted in the slayings of police, military officers and federal prisoners and guards. Others were involved in deadly robberies and drug deals. Three inmates will remain on federal death row: Dylann Roof , convicted of the 2015 racist slayings of nine Black members of Mother Emanuel AME Church in Charleston, South Carolina; the 2013 Boston Marathon Bomber, Dzhokhar Tsarnaev , and Robert Bowers, who fatally shot 11 congregants at Pittsburgh’s Tree of life Synagogue in 2018 , the deadliest antisemitic attack in U.S history. Opponents of the death penalty lauded Biden for a decision they'd long sought. Supporters of Donald Trump , a vocal advocate of expanding capital punishment, criticized the move as an assault to common decency just weeks before the president-elect takes office. Victims' families and former colleagues share relief and anger Donnie Oliverio, a retired Ohio police officer whose partner was killed by an inmate whose death sentence was commuted, said the execution of “the person who killed my police partner and best friend would have brought me no peace.” “The president has done what is right here,” Oliverio said in a statement also issued by the White House, “and what is consistent with the faith he and I share.” Heather Turner, whose mother, Donna Major, was killed in a bank robbery in South Carolina in 2017, called Biden's commutation of the killer's sentence a “clear gross abuse of power” in a Facebook post, adding that the weeks she spent in court with the hope of justice were now “just a waste of time.” “At no point did the president consider the victims,” Turner wrote. “He, and his supporters, have blood on their hands.” Decision to leave Roof on death row met with conflicting emotions There has always been a broad range of opinions on what punishment Roof should face from the families of the nine people killed and the survivors of the massacre at the Mother Emanuel AME Church. Many forgave him, but some say they can’t forget and their forgiveness doesn’t mean they don’t want to see him put to death for what he did. Felicia Sanders survived the shooting shielding her granddaughter while watching Roof kill her son, Tywanza, and her aunt, Susie Jackson. Sanders brought her bullet-torn bloodstained Bible to his sentencing and said then she can’t even close her eyes to pray because Roof started firing during the closing prayer of Bible study that night. In a text message to her lawyer, Andy Savage, Sanders called Biden’s decision to not spare Roof’s life a wonderful Christmas gift. Michael Graham, whose sister, Cynthia Hurd, was killed, told The Associated Press that Roof’s lack of remorse and simmering white nationalism in the country means he is the kind of dangerous and evil person the death penalty is intended for. “This was a crime against a race of people," Graham said. “It didn’t matter who was there, only that they were Black.” But the Rev. Sharon Richer, who was Tywanza Sanders’ cousin and whose mother, Ethel Lance, was killed, criticized Biden for not sparing Roof and clearing out all of death row. She said every time Roof’s case comes up through numerous appeals it is like reliving the massacre all over again. “I need the President to understand that when you put a killer on death row, you also put their victims' families in limbo with the false promise that we must wait until there is an execution before we can begin to heal,” Richer said in a statement. Richer, a board member of Death Penalty Action, which seeks to abolish capital punishment, was driven to tears by conflicting emotions during a Zoom news conference Monday. “The families are left to be hostages for the years and years of appeals that are to come,” Richer said. “I’ve got to stay away from the news today. I’ve got to turn the TV off — because whose face am I going to see?” Biden is giving more attention to the three inmates he chose not to spare, something they all wanted as a part of what drove them to kill, said Abraham Bonowitz, Death Penalty Action’s executive director. “These three racists and terrorists who have been left on death row came to their crimes from political motivations. When Donald Trump gets to execute them what will really be happening is they will be given a global platform for their agenda of hatred,” Bonowitz said. Politicians and advocacy groups speak up Biden had faced pressure from advocacy organizations to commute federal death sentences, and several praised him for taking action in his final month in office. Anthony D. Romero, executive director of the ACLU, said in a statement that Biden “has shown our country — and the rest of the world — that the brutal and inhumane policies of our past do not belong in our future.” Republicans, including Sen. Tom Cotton of Arkansas, on the other hand, criticized the move — and argued its moral ground was shaky given the three exceptions. “Once again, Democrats side with depraved criminals over their victims, public order, and common decency,” Cotton wrote on X. “Democrats can’t even defend Biden’s outrageous decision as some kind of principled, across-the-board opposition to the death penalty since he didn’t commute the three most politically toxic cases.” Liz Murrill, Louisiana's Republican attorney general, criticized the commuted sentence of Len Davis, a former New Orleans policeman convicted of orchestrating the killing of a woman who had filed a complaint against him. “We can’t trust the Feds to get justice for victims of heinous crimes, so it’s long past time for the state to get it done,” the tough-on-crime Republican said in a written statement to the AP. One inmate's attorney expresses thanks — and his remorse Two men whose sentences were commuted were Norris Holder and Billie Jerome Allen, on death row for opening fire with assault rifles during a 1997 bank robbery in St. Louis, killing a guard, 46-year-old Richard Heflin. Holder’s attorney, Madeline Cohen, said in an email that Holder, who is Black, was sentenced to death by an all-white jury. She said his case “reflects many of the system’s flaws,” and thanked Biden for commuting his sentence. “Norris’ case exemplifies the racial bias and arbitrariness that led the President to commute federal death sentences,” Cohen said. “Norris has always been deeply remorseful for the pain his actions caused, and we hope this decision brings some measure of closure to Richard Heflin’s family.” Swenson reported from Seattle. Associated Press writers Jim Salter in O'Fallon, Missouri, and Sara Cline in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, contributed to this report. The New England Patriots will head to Hard Rock Stadium with 10 questionable. Top cornerback Christian Gonzalez, who was added to the injury report due to a hip issue following Friday’s practice, headlines the list. The No. 17 overall pick in the 2023 NFL draft became a limited participant alongside a returning defensive captain in Deatrich Wise Jr. to conclude AFC East preparations. But defensive tackle Jaquelin Roy has been ruled out after staying sidelined throughout work on the Miami Dolphins because of a neck injury. Here’s the rest of the game statuses leading up to Sunday’s 1 p.m. ET kickoff. A neck issue forced Roy out of what became a 19-3 win over the Chicago Bears at Soldier Field. The defensive tackle, who was promoted from the practice squad to the 53-man roster in October, has missed consecutive weeks of practice since then. And now consecutive games. He stands with 17 tackles and the initial two sacks of his NFL career this season. No member of New England’s defense has handled more snaps than Gonzalez this fall. The sophomore has played 98 percent of the downs in the secondary while totaling 11 starts, 46 tackles and the second interception of his tenure. As for Wise, the 2017 draft choice missed one game and five practices due to a foot injury before making his way back on Friday in a partial capacity. And at offensive and defensive tackle, Lowe and Barmore both spent time on the sidelines heading into the trip to Miami Gardens. The latter made his 2024 debut last Sunday against the Los Angeles Rams after being diagnosed with blood clots at the start of training camp in July. Elsewhere in Foxborough, Strange recently had his 21-day practice window open. The Chattanooga product, now factoring in at the center spot, suffered a torn patellar tendon last December and continues to reside on the physically unable to perform list. But tight end Austin Hooper, defensive linemen Daniel Ekuale and Davon Godchaux, as well as linebacker Christian Elliss all will go without game designations for the Patriots.
Ange Postecoglou searching for answers over Tottenham’s injury crisisWASHINGTON (AP) — A ninth U.S. telecoms firm has been confirmed to have been hacked as part of a that gave officials in access to private texts and phone conversations of an unknown number of Americans, a top White House official said Friday. Biden administration officials said , as well as dozens of nations, had been affected by the Chinese hacking blitz known as Salt Typhoon. But Anne Neuberger, the deputy national security adviser for cyber and emerging technologies, told reporters Friday that a ninth victim had been identified after the administration released guidance to companies about how to hunt for Chinese culprits in their networks. The update from Neuberger is the latest development in a massive hacking operation that has alarmed national security officials, exposed cybersecurity vulnerabilities in the private sector and laid bare China’s hacking sophistication. The hackers compromised the networks of telecommunications companies to obtain customer call records and gain access to the private communications of “a limited number of individuals.” Though the FBI has not publicly identified any of the victims, officials believe senior U.S. government officials and prominent political figures are among those whose whose communications were accessed. Neuberger said officials did not yet have a precise sense how many Americans overall were affected by Salt Typhoon, in part because the Chinese were careful about their techniques, but a “large number” were in the Washington-Virginia area. Officials believe the goal of the hackers was to identify who owned the phones and, if they were “government targets of interest,” spy on their texts and phone calls, she said. The FBI said most of the people targeted by the hackers are “primarily involved in government or political activity.” Neuberger said the episode highlighted the need for required cybersecurity practices in the telecommunications industry, something the Federal Communications Commission is to take up at a meeting next month. “We know that voluntary cyber security practices are inadequate to protect against China, Russia and Iran hacking of our critical infrastructure,” she said. The Chinese government has denied responsibility for the hacking.

Arsenal up to second after Kai Havertz goal sees off struggling IpswichA little-known Florida-based drones company said on Wednesday it had appointed Donald Trump Jr as an adviser – then saw its stock price surge. “Don Jr joining our board of advisors provides us unique expertise we need as we bring drone component manufacturing back to America,” said Allan Evans, chief executive of Unusual Machines. By mid-morning on the New York stock exchange, company shares had climbed as high as $11.67, more than double the day’s opening price. Unusual Machines also said Trump Jr, the oldest son of the president-elect, was among its investors. A filing with the US Securities and Exchange Commission listed Trump Jr as the second-biggest shareholder. In a press release that described Trump Jr as “a globally recognized business leader” and “best-selling author”, Evans said he would “bring a wealth of experience”. Trump, typically referred to as Don Jr, has spent most of his adult life working for his father’s company, the Trump Organization, on real estate and branding. But he has risen to political prominence since his sister Ivanka Trump and her husband Jared Kushner , distanced themselves from Donald Trump following his defeat by Joe Biden in the 2020 presidential election and incitement of the January 6 attack on Congress by Trump supporters who tried in vain to overturn his loss. This year, Trump Jr was widely held to have helped steer the Ohio senator, JD Vance , onto the Republican ticket which defeated the Democratic ticket of the vice-president, Kamala Harris and her running mate and Minnesota governor, Tim Walz . On Wednesday, Trump Jr said: “The need for drones is obvious. It is also obvious that we must stop buying Chinese drones and Chinese drone parts. I love what Unusual Machines is doing to bring drone manufacturing jobs back to the USA.” That was in line with statements from his father the president-elect, who has long said he will impose hefty tariffs on Chinese imports. Unusual Machines, however, says in its SEC filing it “has been heavily dependent on Chinese imports for our products and operations”. Referring to brands of drones and equipment, it said: “A substantial majority of Rotor Riot’s products are manufactured, directly and indirectly, using Chinese vendors. Fat Shark’s primary contract manufacturer is Shenzhen Fat Shark Technology Ltd ... which is located in Shenzhen, China.” Unusual Machines did not immediately comment further.AGNC Investment Corp. In 2016, Ghazal Alagh and her husband, Varun Alagh, established MamaEarth, a personal beauty care brand focused on environment-friendly beauty and personal hygiene products, specially designed for mothers and newborns. Published: November 23, 2024 11:08 PM IST By In 2016, Ghazal Alagh and her husband, Varun, launched MamaEarth, and over the years turned their initial Rs 25 lakh investment into a major beauty care brand valued at Rs 15,000 crore. However, eight years later, Ghazal’s MamaEarth now lies in shambles as 50% of the company’s market cap was wiped out within a span of two months. Here’s what happened and why MamaEarth is no longer a unicorn. A startup earns the prestigious ‘unicorn’ tag when the company crosses the prestigious $1 billion valuation threshold, and MamaEarth has now lost that recognition after its parent company, Honasa Consumer Limited, lost 50 percent of its market cap in the last two months. The company was valued at around Rs 15,000 crore in September, with its stock trading at a healthy Rs 541 per share. But things went awry as its stock eroded gradually, crashing to Rs. 227 in November, wiping out Rs 7,500 crore of the company’s market cap. Currently, MamaEarth is valued at less than $1 billion, thus losing the coveted ‘unicorn’ tag. Mamaearth’s parent company has lost 50 percent of its market cap in the last two months. In September 2024, Honasa Consumer’s stock was trading at Rs. 541 a share, and the company was worth around Rs. 15,000 crore. But in November, just two months later, its stock has crashed to just Rs. 227 a share with a market cap of Rs. 7,300 crore. This represents an erosion of Rs. 7,500 crore of its market cap in two months. Simultaneously, Mamaearth is now worth less than $1 billion, and has lost its unicorn tag. Interestingly, the biggest slump in MamaEarth’s shares came shortly after the firm declared its quarterly results last week, reporting a revenue of Rs. 417 crore in the September quarter, a 17% drop from its earnings of Rs. 498 crore in the previous quarter, and 10% lower than the revenue reported in the same quarter last year. MamaEarth’s business had shown signs of stress even before the quarterly results were announced, with distributors flagging concerns over excessive, unsold and expired inventory from the company. Ghazal Alagh’s startup was one of the first to venture into the personal beauty sector, but its rapid success gave rise to rival companies, which started to compete with MamaEarth for market share, eventually taking a big chunk. Additionally, the rise of quick commerce platforms have made Mamaearth’s rival brands to reach consumers with easy, thus further reducing the company market share. Who is Ghazal Alagh Born and raised in a middle-class household in Gurugram, Haryana, Ghazal Alagh completed her early education in her home state and later earned a Bachelors degree in computer application from Punjab University. Following her graduation, Ghazal joined the New York Academy of Art where she completed her Summer Intensive Course in Design and Applied Arts and her Intensive Course in Figurative Art in Modern Art in 2013. In 2016, Ghazal Alagh and her husband, Varun Alagh, established MamaEarth, a personal beauty care brand focused on environment-friendly beauty and personal hygiene products, specially designed for mothers and newborns. With an initial investment of Rs 25 lakh, the couple soon turned MamaEarth into one of top brands in the space, along the way becoming the first Asian brand to earn the MadeSafe label, making it a trustworthy brand for moms and infants. The company soon grew into a unicorn, and as late as September 2024, had a valuation of Rs 15,000 crore. For breaking news and live news updates, like us on or follow us on and . If you’re worried about your dog’s noise levels causing a nuisance, there are ways to prevent them from barking excessively. Dr. Mary Burch, an animal behaviorist and family dog director at the American Kennel Club, offers suggestions for calming them down. Burch said the prevention trick you use depends on what type of barking they’re doing. The four most common reasons a dog barks: To alert: To communicate: Excitement: Separation: When they are left alone. Burch said some dogs use barking as a way to react to moving objects such as cars, vacuum cleaners or even other dogs. She said this barking can be controlled by using treats to teach your dog how to do the following. Bark on cue: When you notice your dog barking at an object, wait for them to stop. After they are quiet, say the command “quiet” out loud and reward them a treat. But “whatever you do, don’t give the dog the food reward when it is barking,” Burch said. It’s important not to do this, because you are trying to associate an activity that is incompatible with barking (like sitting quietly) with the reward. Sit and watch: This tip is particularly useful if your dog is barking at a household object like a vacuum cleaner. When you start vacuuming, sit your dog on the other side of the room. After your dog stops barking, go over to them and say a command like “good boy, quiet” and give them a treat. Over time, Burch said your dog should be able to get closer to the vacuum cleaner or other items without constantly barking. It’s unavoidable. You have to go to work, buy groceries or a number of other situations where you have to leave your dog home by themselves. In response, your dog barks awaiting your return, possibly disturbing your neighbors. Dr. Burch said a common suggestion for separation barking is to turn on the television or radio to help them calm down. “If you try this and it works, you are lucky,” she said. “It is an easy solution (but), unfortunately the television and radio solutions don’t often work.” What does work is finding out why your dog is barking, and shaping your prevention strategies around that. Excitement: Boredom: Separation anxiety: And if you don’t know exactly why your dog is barking, Burch said setting up a camera might help you find out. Overall, Burch said the best solution to help prevent your dog from barking excessively is a combination of training and involving them in activities for their mental well-being. This includes regular exercise and enrolling them in programs where they can socialize with other dogs and people. “There is a saying that a tired dog is a happy dog,” she said. “Your dog might be more likely to relax and rest peacefully (minus barking) if it is provided with training that results in mental stimulation and exercise. A skilled trainer or animal behaviorist can help you if you are not having success on your own.” Get local news delivered to your inbox!Stocks Gain for the Week, Nvidia Fails to Impress, and Gold ShinesA little-known Florida-based drones company said on Wednesday it had appointed Donald Trump Jr as an adviser – then saw its stock price surge. “Don Jr joining our board of advisors provides us unique expertise we need as we bring drone component manufacturing back to America,” said Allan Evans, chief executive of Unusual Machines. Brock Bowers of the Las Vegas Raiders moved past Pro Football Hall of Famer Mike Ditka on Sunday to set the NFL record for most receiving yards by a tight end in his rookie season and also set the record for most receptions by a rookie, regardless of position. Bowers has 108 receptions to top the mark set last season by Puka Nacua (105) of the Los Angeles Rams. Bowers' yardage stands at 1,144 after having seven receptions for 77 yards in a 25-10 road victory over the New Orleans Saints. Bowers also set a franchise receptions for catches in a season, surpassing Darren Waller (107 in 2020). "It's awesome," Bowers said of the records in a postgame interview on Fox. " You never know what to expect coming up to the next level. It's been everything and more." Bowers' third catch on Sunday -- a 13-yard grab late in the second quarter against the Saints -- pushed his season total to 1,087 yards. Ditka totaled 1,076 receiving yards in 14 games with the Chicago Bears in 1961. Bowers, 22, set the record for receptions by a rookie tight end earlier this season by eclipsing the total of 86 reeled in by Sam LaPorta of the Detroit Lions in 2023. Bowers was selected by the Raiders with the 13th overall pick of the 2024 NFL Draft. Despite all his catches, he has just four scoring receptions. While with Georgia, Bowers was the first back-to-back winner of the Mackey Award (2022, 2023), which is given to the top tight end in college football. --Field Level Media
