Kennedy Jr. to select top health officials for the next Trump administration has petitioned the federal government to revoke its approval of the lifesaving polio vaccine for children ― and he could have a prominent job in a Health and Human Services Department led by Kennedy. The New York Times revealed the connection in a report Friday, finding that Aaron Siri, the lawyer Kennedy has been consulting, has filed multiple legal petitions to block vaccines on behalf of the Informed Consent Action Network in recent years. That includes a 2022 petition for the Food and Drug Administration to withdraw its approval of a standard polio vaccine for babies and children, claiming the agency needs to do further studies to prove its safety. Polio can cause paralysis and death. Before the vaccine was approved in 1955, there were about 16,000 cases of polio every year in the U.S. Today the disease has nearly been eradicated among Americans, though cases do pop up . In recent months, the deadly disease has resurged in Gaza. On behalf of ICAN, Siri has also petitioned the FDA to suspend vaccines for hepatitis A, tetanus and diphtheria. When reached for comment, the FDA said it was “continuing to review these petitions” from Siri but that it “cannot predict when the reviews will be completed.” “Until such time, we cannot comment further,” a spokesperson for the department said. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention declined to comment for this story. Siri could have a top job at the HHS if the Senate confirms Kennedy, a prominent vaccine skeptic, as President-elect Donald Trump ’s nominee to lead the department. According to the Times , Kennedy has been privately expressing interest in making Siri general counsel for the department. If confirmed, Kennedy would oversee the FDA and multiple other federal public health agencies. Siri declined to comment to the Times, but a spokesperson for Kennedy said Siri has not discussed his petitions with any of the health nominees. “Mr. Kennedy has long said that he wants transparency in vaccines and to give people choice,” the spokesperson said. Trump has expressed openness toward some of Kennedy’s baseless vaccine concerns. In his Time magazine “ Person of the Year ” interview published Thursday, he suggested there could be merit in the unfounded claim that vaccines cause autism. “We’re going to have a big discussion,” Trump said when asked if he would sign off on Kennedy ending childhood vaccination programs. “The autism rate is at a level that nobody ever believed possible. Ukraine must be placed in the “strongest possible position for negotiations” to end the war with Russia, Sir Keir Starmer has said. The Prime Minister insisted the UK will back Ukraine “for as long as it takes” as he made a speech at the Lord Mayor’s Banquet in London, but for the first time acknowledged the conflict could move towards a negotiated end. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has in recent weeks suggested he is open to a possible ceasefire with Vladimir Putin’s Russia. Kyiv and its European allies meanwhile fear the advent of Donald Trump’s return to the White House could result in American aid being halted. President-elect Trump has said he would prefer to move towards a peace deal, and has claimed he could end the conflict on “day one” of his time in power. As he attempts to strike up a good relationship with the incoming president, Sir Keir revealed he had told Mr Trump the UK “will invest more deeply than ever in this transatlantic bond with our American friends in the years to come”. In his speech at London’s Guildhall, the Prime Minister said there is “no question it is right we support Ukraine”, as the UK’s aid to Kyiv is “deeply in our self-interest”. Allowing Russia to win the war would mean “other autocrats would believe they can follow Putin’s example,” he warned. Sir Keir added: “So we must continue to back Ukraine and do what it takes to support their self-defence for as long as it takes. “To put Ukraine in the strongest possible position for negotiations so they can secure a just and lasting peace on their terms that guarantees their security, independence, and right to choose their own future.” Mr Zelensky told Sky News over the weekend he would be open to speaking with Mr Putin, but branded the Russian president a “terrorist”. He also suggested Ukrainian territory under his control should be taken under the “Nato umbrella” to try to stop the “hot stage” of the war with Russia. In a banquet speech focused on foreign affairs, the Prime Minister said it was “plain wrong” to suggest the UK must choose between its allies, adding: “I reject it utterly. “(Clement) Attlee did not choose between allies. (Winston) Churchill did not choose. “The national interest demands that we work with both.” Sir Keir said the UK and the US were “intertwined” when it came to commerce, technology and security. The Prime Minister added: “That’s why, when President Trump graciously hosted me for dinner in Trump Tower, I told him that we will invest more deeply than ever in this transatlantic bond with our American friends in the years to come.” He also repeated his commitment to “rebuild our ties with Europe” and insisted he was right to try to build closer links with China. “It is remarkable that until I met President Xi last month there had been no face-to-face meeting between British and Chinese leaders for six years,” the Prime Minister said. “We can’t simply look the other way. We need to engage. To co-operate, to compete and to challenge on growth, on security concerns, on climate as well as addressing our differences in a full and frank way on issues like Hong Kong, human rights, and sanctions on our parliamentarians,” he added. This year, however, is a bit different: It seems Amazon has finally jumped onto the end-of-year recap bandwagon, rolling out its own version to users it calls "Delivered." (Get it? Because Amazon?) If you've ever used a platform with a yearly recap, Amazon Music Delivered seems pretty standard: The feature summarizes your listening activity for 2024, including stats like your top artists, songs, and podcasts of the year—if you used Amazon Music for your podcasting needs, of course. Amazon also says that you'll see any "hidden gems" you discovered, as well as the "top request" you made on Amazon Music via Alexa. I'm sure your social media feeds will be abuzz with that stat. Amazon does say that certain listeners may receive a message from one of their top artists. The company didn't confirm which artists provided these messages, but Amazon does say you need an "Alexa-enabled" device in order to receive messages. In any case, it's a big improvement over how things used to work: Amazon Music used to offer an annual playlist , comprising your top tracks from the past year. But this new feature, like Spotify Wrapped, is a more engaging way to review your 2024 listening habits. How to find your 2024 Amazon Music Delivered To check out your 2024 Delivered, open the Amazon Music app on your iPhone or Android, then head to your Library . Here, tap the "2024 Delivered" banner, and you're in. While all the graphics are new, you can still access a year-end playlist. A simple marinade of pantry staples — lemon, tahini, olive oil and a little honey — keeps the chicken moist and becomes the sauce for finishing the dish. Serve on a bed of dark greens or cooked rice. From Beth Dooley. Directions In a large bowl, whisk together the lemon, tahini, honey and olive oil. Measure out 1⁄2 of the mixture into a separate bowl. This is to sauce the chicken after it’s cooked. If it seems too thick, whisk in a little water. Season the chicken with salt and pepper and pound with the flat edge of a knife to even out the width a bit. Put the chicken into the bowl of marinade and turn to coat. Film a heavy skillet with more oil and set over high heat. When the oil begins to ripple, add the chicken, reduce the heat to medium and cook, flipping after about 5 to 7 minutes, and continuing, until cooked through, about 10 to 15 minutes. (The chicken should reach 165 on an instant-read thermometer when done.) Remove the chicken from the skillet, set on a cutting board to rest for about 10 minutes. Slice the meat in long strokes against the grain. Serve on a bed of greens or rice, garnished with a drizzle of sauce, chopped herbs and a few thinly sliced lemons. Pass additional sauce on the side. You only need one pot for this simple pasta. The sausage adds the seasoning, the onions turn sweetly golden, cherry tomatoes burst into a luscious sauce. A squeeze of lemon at the end livens things up. From Beth Dooley. Directions Film a large heavy pot or Dutch oven with the oil and set over medium heat. Add the onion and sauté until it turns limp and golden, about 3 to 5 minutes. Stir in the sausage, breaking apart with a spatula until it crumbles, about 4 to 5 minutes. Stir in the tomatoes and the stock, scraping up the bottom of the pan to release browned bits that stick to the bottom. Bring to a boil. Add the pasta, stirring well and continue boiling for about 4 to 5 minutes. Turn the heat down to a brisk simmer, stirring to keep the pasta from sticking to the bottom of the pot. If the sauce becomes too thick and the pasta begins to stick, stir in water, about 1⁄4 cup at a time. Simmer until the sauce is mostly absorbed and the pasta is tender, about 15 minutes. Turn off the heat and stir in the spinach, then stir in the cheese. Add lemon juice to taste. Serve garnished with the chopped parsley. ALLEN PARK — The Detroit Lions made a move on Tuesday that would have seemed incomprehensible just two seasons ago. The Lions waived edge rusher James Houston, who had one of the best rookie seasons (2022) for an edge rusher in recent memory but has not returned to that form since. Asked why it didn’t work out in Detroit, Lions head coach Dan Campbell said, “It just didn’t.” “It just didn’t. We had James up for a number of games, came back off of injury, got back, and it just never quite worked out,” Campbell said. Houston, a sixth-round pick by Detroit in 2022, collected eight sacks in seven games during his rookie season and appeared to have a limitless ceiling on what he could become as a pass rusher in the following seasons. But he appeared to fall out of favor with the coaching staff as early as 2023 training camp — Detroit was unsuccessfully trying to turn him into a well-rounded outside linebacker that could play every down — then broke an ankle in Week 2 of that season while playing on special teams. He didn’t return until the NFC Championship game, where he had limited snaps (11) and didn’t make an impact on the stat sheet. In training camp before this season, the Lions continued to try to improve other parts of Houston’s game but eventually gave up on the experiment, allowing him to just focus on rushing the passer. He has 13 pressures and just one sack in 2024, even with there being a clear vacancy on the edge following several key injuries. This time two years ago, Houston was getting called up from the practice squad to make his NFL debut against the Buffalo Bills on Thanksgiving Day. Houston dazzled in front of a national television audience , sacking Bills quarterback Josh Allen twice as Detroit took Buffalo to the wire in a 28-25 loss that came on a last-second field goal. Now, before the Lions’ Thanksgiving Day game in 2024, the Lions have decided to move on. Houston hinted at the potential parting with a cryptic social media post on Monday night. He posted on X (formerly Twitter), “Live... Learn.. Move on” with a peace sign emoji. “Look, wish him the best of luck, and sometimes you just need a fresh start and this could be great for him, so, wish him the best,” Campbell said.
