The Cupertino City Council contest is headed for a recount following a two-week long stand off between Ray Wang and Rod Sinks to fill the second open seat. A recount by the Santa Clara County Register of Voters is triggered when the margin of victory between two candidates is less than 0.25% of all ballots cast, or less than 25 votes. A candidate only needs to win by one vote after the recount is finished. So far the two candidates are separated by 65 votes of all ballots casted, which the county recognizes as meeting the 0.25% requirement. Wang has a small lead as of Friday. Cupertino’s recount will begin Monday and continue daily until all the ballots are counted, including the 7,000 unprocessed ballots left in the county as of Friday. The Register of Voters doesn’t know how long Cupertino’s will take, but volunteers are required to finish prior to certification on Dec 5, according to Associate Community Officer Michael Borja. Seven candidates were vying to fill Cupertino’s two open council seats this election season, including incumbents Hung Wei and Kitty Moore, former mayors Sinks, Gilbert Wong and Barry Chang, former planning commissioner Wang and political newcomer Claudio Bono. Moore has secured her spot on the council so far, leading with 25% of the votes as of Friday. Moore and Wang were running on a joint platform of promoting more fiscal accountability and transparency on the council and encouraging the city to consider the environmental and public safety concerns of large development projects. Wang thinks the results of the recount will be close, and sees the process as a sign of the city’s good voter turnout. “We’re optimistic and have a lot of support in the community,” Wang said. “We’re looking forward to a resident focus approach.” Sinks could not be reached for comment. The former mayor has voiced his support for turning The Rise into a vibrant downtown for Cupertino. He is campaigning for more inter-city transportation services and a business-friendly environment. Cupertino isn’t the only city to undergo a recount. The Palo Alto City Council will also start a recount on Monday for candidates Keith Reckdahl and Doria Summa, who are vying for the fourth open seat.

Amazon Global Store Cross-border Summit Makes Its First Appearance in JiangsuA reviewer’s life is not without its rewards. For once in a blue moon a book comes along that possibly wouldn’t be a first pick in a bookstore but reveals itself to be a rare gem. by Shrikant Bojewar is a brilliant novella about a lad called Langdya who has difficulty passing Class VII. Based on this simple premise, the author weaves a marvellous work of social satire set in a tiny village in Maharashtra where life is simpler but not a stranger to complexities. Naru Pingtya owns the local bar where Ajabrao drinks every evening. Later he climbs the roof of his house and sometimes sings abhangs in praise of Lord Vitthala. Gengane, the local schoolteacher, is also a regular; while his wife is set on seducing Langdya. There’s a crisis that calls for great improvisation because Langdya has tampered with his failed marksheet and fears his father’s wrath. When he spots the music teacher Mrs Deshpande going towards the deserted fort at the edge of the village, he tells Habib Sir and Gengane about it. To Langdya’s great fortune, it is Dhamale the headmaster that she goes to meet. Langdya accidently falls into his role of a fixer because fear of exposure makes Dhamale sign his matriculation form. Not only does he clear that, he also clears his Class XII. He discovers he has a natural talent for being a dalal. As a fixer, he is as masterful as he is without a moral compass. He is fated to cross paths with a tomcat named Latthya and discovers they understand each other in a shared language. With Latthya by his side, he has access to far more powerful information. The author’s style is a restrained form of storytelling, almost minimalist. Yet he sketches the life around the local bar, each school teacher, the parents and Langdya himself with essential details. Interweaving the village cats and their dalliances while making them to be the more progressive species, adds a special note of whimsy. Though when the scene shifts to Mumbai, Langdya is an adult and deals with real politics: “He soon learned that the journalist who walked with a chip on his shoulder in his territory was treated worse than a dog when he came to the newspaper’s headquarters in Mumbai. If that reporter filed 10 news reports, the paper published only two of them.” What stands out is the biting satire, often stated in a matter-of-fact manner. “Anyone who has some knowledge of politics and who knows someone in a TV channel becomes a political analyst.” The translator Vikrant Pande must be given his due for conveying the style impeccably. More, gratitude is owed to him for this delightful book that enchants and tickles the funny bone in equal measureMINNEAPOLIS (AP) — The plan for the Minnesota Vikings was to bring in Sam Darnold as the bridge between Kirk Cousins and J.J. McCarthy, confident his strong arm and starting experience would sufficiently run a high-caliber offense until the rookie was deemed ready to play. Darnold's performance to date has been much closer to superstar than mere stopgap. “He’s a baller," Vikings safety Harrison Smith said. "He can make stuff happen when he needs to. I know with the outside narrative on him and his path and everything, you might not think that, but ever since he got here, it felt like that was going to happen.” Having led the Vikings (10-2) to their fifth consecutive victory with the go-ahead touchdown pass against Arizona last week, one game after a stellar overtime drive to beat Chicago , Darnold has become one of the darlings of this NFL this season with his success in coach Kevin O'Connell's system after the third overall pick in the 2018 draft started his career in rather bleak fashion. His first year in Minnesota sure has been smoother than what Cousins has gone through in his debut with the Atlanta Falcons . Last week in a loss at home to the Los Angeles Chargers, Cousins matched his career high with four interceptions. “I don’t think anybody can put any more pressure on Kirk than he has for himself. He’s carried us through this season when we were figuring out a lot of things on defense,” Falcons defensive tackle Grady Jarrett said. “He’s just having a hard time right now. There’s nothing to say he can’t catch fire and light it up like he’s been doing.” The Falcons (6-6) take their three-game losing streak on the road to face the Vikings, with division races for both teams in full swing. The quarterback contrasts have made this matchup all the more intriguing, with Cousins coming back to the place where he spent the previous six seasons. Cousins has a $25 million salary cap hit this season, the 11th-highest among quarterbacks in the league. Even if the Falcons were to move on in 2026 and swallow the dead money for two more years with eighth overall pick Michael Penix Jr. waiting in the wings, Cousins will carry a $40 million charge in 2025. Darnold’s cap charge is $5 million this season, just 31st on the list. Though he will become a free agent in March, the Vikings structured his contract with void years to spread his cap hit into next season for another $5 million. McCarthy, the 10th overall pick, won't be ready until next year after having surgery to repair the meniscus he tore in his right knee in his first preseason game. Though Darnold has had a couple of clunkers this year, the Vikings still won those games and he's bounced back strong without letting interceptions linger into future decisions. "He’s kind of found a little balance, at least the last few weeks, of ‘When is it too risky?’ and ‘When can I take my shot at something?’” offensive coordinator Wes Phillips said. The Falcons have seen as much on tape. “I think he’s playing free,” Pro Bowl safety Jessie Bates said. “It’s not a lot of complicated throws or anything that he’s doing. I just think that he’s finally able to feel comfortable in himself.” Acknowledging the moment Falcons coach Raheem Morris decided to address the significance of Cousins’ homecoming with the team, bracing for the type of crowd reaction that will only intensify the noise at U.S. Bank Stadium that's already daunting for opponents. Minnesota's defense has thrived this season at home, using the fans to enhance the effectiveness of a disguise-based, aggressive scheme that leads the league with 18 interceptions and has also been adept at rushing the passer and stuffing the run. “The environment they create up in Minnesota is absolutely outstanding,” Morris said. Cousins isn't the only key figure from the Falcons who's well-known to Vikings coaches. Morris was the defensive coordinator in 2021 with the Los Angeles Rams when O'Connell was the offensive coordinator and Phillips was the tight ends coach on that Super Bowl champion team. Listen to your mother Vikings running back Aaron Jones has fumbled three times in the last two games, losing two of them, but he hasn't lost the confidence of coaches or teammates as evidenced by the pass called for his go-ahead touchdown catch against the Cardinals. Family is a strong support system for him, too, but sometimes that means tough love. His mother, Vurgess Jones, let him have it after the game when they talked about the turnovers. “I was like, ‘I’ve got to learn from it,'” Jones said. “She was like, ‘You didn’t learn last week?'” He has matched his career high in 2024 with five fumbles and three lost, a fact not lost on a Falcons defense that's aggressive with dislodging techniques despite only four recovered fumbles in 12 games. “You can see it all over the tape: Those guys are coaching it," Phillips said. Greenard is going strong Vikings outside linebacker Jonathan Greenard, who was named the NFC Defensive Player of the Month after racking up eight tackles for loss in November, carried his pass-rushing mojo into December with a couple of clutch plays in the final minute to preserve the victory over Arizona. Greenard has 10 of the team's 39 sacks. “How many times this year has he affected the quarterback, drawn a penalty, sacked the quarterback, strip-sacked like last week in these critical moments where you need your best players to go make those plays?” O'Connell said. “He’s done it time and time again.” Bijan is busy Falcons running back Bijan Robinson set a career high last week with 26 carries. He had 102 yards rushing and was again a significant part of the passing attack with six catches against the Chargers. “I just do whatever I can to help us as a team,” said Robinson, who’s fifth in the NFL with 1,277 combined yards from scrimmage. “I just trust whatever they have in the plan.” ___ AP NFL: https://apnews.com/hub/NFL Dave Campbell, The Associated PressArticle content Toyota has announced updates for its 2025-model-year Corolla Cross , including introducing a not-quite-exclusive, well-known colour: Soul Red Crystal. Hybrid trims also offer a two-tone design option, pairing the vibrant red with a Jet Black roof. The subcompact SUV starts at $27,720 in Canada. By the way, if the name “Soul Red Crystal” sounds familiar – or if you recognize the hue by eye – that’s because the striking colour has long been associated with Mazda vehicles. Known for its deep, vibrant finish and rich metallic undertones, Soul Red has been a hallmark, hero colour for Mazda’s flagships, symbolizing passion and craftsmanship. Lucky for Toyota, then, that the Corolla Cross and Mazda’s CX-50 are built on the same assembly lines, and the companies share a happy relationship. The 2025 Corolla Cross offers a handful of powertrain options: first and foremost is a 2.0-litre gasoline four-cylinder, while secondarily a same-sized engine gets paired with Toyota’s fifth-generation hybrid system. The gasoline-only powertrain delivers 169 horsepower, with front-wheel-drive models achieving a combined fuel efficiency of 7.3 L/100 km; all-wheel-drive variants of this four-cylinder are rated at 7.8 L/100 km. Hybrid models provide 196 system horsepower, and work with all-wheel-drive to deliver a posted efficiency of 5.6L/100km. Buyers can choose from eight trims, ranging from the base L models; to the feature-rich Hybrid XSE AWD. Toyota Safety Sense 3.0, a suite of driver assistance technologies, and the Toyota Multimedia system with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility are standard across all trims. Higher trims introduce dual-zone automatic climate control, Softex upholstery, upgraded LED lighting, and premium audio systems. The 2025 Corolla Cross continues on in terms of style and practicality. Exterior features include a distinctive black grille, flared fender arches, LED headlamps and taillamps, and grade-specific 17- or 18-inch wheels. Hybrid trims now feature Toyota’s Beyond Zero badge, as a nod to the company’s electrified powertrains. Inside, the compact SUV offers seating for five adults and a versatile cargo area with 60/40 split-folding rear seats. All models have nine airbags and a backup camera, in addition to the Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 suite. In a recent statement, former President Donald Trump reiterated his strong stance on immigration, calling for the expulsion of millions of illegal immigrants from the United States. This renewed commitment to enforcing strict immigration policies has sparked debate and controversy across the nation.Enron , once among the largest energy companies in the U.S., has become a punchline since it famously collapsed amid inflated profits and corporate fraud in 2001. Now, social media posts, a slick promotional video and a revamped website suggest the infamous company is making a comeback. On Dec. 2, it posted promotional videos on TikTok , BlueSky and X about adapting to the changing world featuring inspiring imagery and diverse voices claiming "I am Enron" with the tagline, “We're back. Can we talk?” To coincide with the video and website launch, cryptocurrency bloggers speculated Enron will be involved in cryptocurrency exchange. Others speculated the rebranding is fake or parody . THE SOURCES WHAT WE FOUND On Dec. 2, a company calling itself Enron Corporation published a promotional video on social media, introduced a new website and issued a press release announcing a relaunch of the company. But the relaunched website calls itself a parody. The new company with the infamous name is owned by Connor Gaydos, the co-founder of satirical conspiracy group “Birds Aren’t Real.” A disclaimer on the website’s terms of service page reads, “THE INFORMATION ON THE WEBSITE IS FIRST AMENDMENT PROTECTED PARODY, REPRESENTS PERFORMANCE ART, AND IS FOR ENTERTAINMENT PURPOSES ONLY.” VERIFY reached out to the media contact listed on Enron’s website and in the press release about the site’s relaunch. Will Chabot , spokesperson for the current Enron brand and managing director of media strategy for Stu Loeser & Co., would not confirm or deny if the company was real or parody, but did direct VERIFY to the company’s articles of incorporation and press release about the relaunch. “I understand you had some questions about Enron's launch. While I'm not able to answer all of them (we'll have more to share soon - including a big announcement in the energy space - and will be sure to keep you in the loop),” Chabot told VERIFY. The latest iteration of Enron Corporation’s articles of incorporation were filed in Delaware on Feb. 28, 2024 by Gaydos, according to records provided to VERIFY by Chabot. Gaydos is the co-founder of Birds Aren’t Real , a satirical conspiracy group founded in 2017 that jokingly claims the U.S. government has been replacing living birds with surveillance drones. Gaydos registered the Enron trademark on May 13, 2020, through his The College Company LLC, which also has registered trademarks for Birds Aren’t Real. According to the trademark application for Enron, the trademark is used for shirts and other merchandise. The new website has merchandise for sale. Archival versions of Enron.com dating back to 1998 are available on The Wayback Machine. In January of 2024, the website domain of enron.com was available for purchase , archives of the page show. The last time that URL represented the bankrupt energy giant was in 2007 . There is no evidence to support claims the Enron brand was relaunched as a cryptocurrency firm, as some have speculated. There is a page on Enron’s new website titled “decentralization,” which is a common term to describe the kind of technology behind cryptocurrency. The website says, “Decentralized technology is advancing, and we will of course have a role to play in its future. We couldn't be more excited to show you, but until then please stay vigilant and avoid falling for scams.
