The rise of data centers and their quest for renewable energy to power AI technology will boost the growth of renewables even under President Donald Trump, the Americas head of Japan’s biggest bank, Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group, told Reuters. “The new administration will be more constructive on fossil fuels, but that doesn’t mean renewables go away,” Kevin Cronin, Regional Executive and CEO for The Americas at MUFG, said in an interview. Surging demand from data centers will boost renewables growth in America and projects will continue to be developed as they take years and multiple election cycles from the planning to the operational stage, according to Cronin. There have been concerns in the renewables sector that it would suffer under Trump who has vowed to rescind many of the climate and clean energy policies of President Joe Biden. Trump’s transition team is said to be preparing radical changes to U.S. policy toward electric vehicles and tailpipe emissions. These could include axing the EV incentives and the government mandate for federal EV fleets, and rolling back the Biden Administration’s rules on tailpipe emissions and fuel economy standards, Reuters reported earlier this week, citing a draft document it has seen. In a sign of what the energy industry can expect, Trump last month picked a shale boss, Chris Wright, chief executive of Liberty Energy, as his nomination to lead the Department of Energy. The nomination of Doug Burgum, the Governor of North Dakota, to be the interior secretary and head of a new National Energy Council at the White House, is also a signal to the industry that America’s leadership in fossil fuel production and exports is also high on Trump’s agenda. Read also: Nigeria to electrify 3,700+ healthcare centres with renewables “The common thread in the thinking on energy expressed by both Wright and Burgum is that they want to boost production of all types of energy, including fossil fuels,” commented Ed Crooks, Senior Vice President, Americas, at Wood Mackenzie. Abuja in darkness as vandals attack Shiroro-Katampe transmission line Some parts of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, have been thrown into darkness as vandals, again, destroyed the 330-kilovolt Shiroro-Katampe Transmission Line. Ndidi Mbah, TCN spokesperson, disclosed the disruption on their official X (formerly Twitter) page, stating that it occurred at approximately 11:43 PM. She further explained that the 330kV Shiroro–Katampe circuit experienced an outage in the power supply, and despite attempting a trial reclosure, the line tripped again immediately. In an investigation carried out by a TCN line patrol team dispatched from the Abuja Regional Office, it was discovered that the vandals had stolen part of the conductor between towers T216 and T218. “The TCN lines maintenance crew has since mobilized to the site and is working assiduously to replace the vandalized 330kV power conductor. Restoration of bulk power supply through the affected line is expected soon.” “We appeal to the general public to assist in identifying and reporting suspicious activities around power transmission infrastructure. Your vigilance and cooperation are crucial in helping us to prevent acts of vandalism or apprehend the culprits.” She stated This year has seen a troubling rise in vandalism targeting Nigeria’s critical infrastructure. In response, the Federal Government has already spent an alarming N8.8 billion on repairing transmission towers destroyed by vandals highlighting the significant economic burden of recurring infrastructure damage. Instead of investing in the expansion and modernization of the power sector, the government is forced to allocate resources to address the damage caused by these destructive acts. These substantial repair costs are diverting much-needed funds away from essential development projects, further hindering efforts to strengthen the national grid and improve electricity access across the country. As more funds are spent on repairs, the ability to improve and stabilize the electricity supply becomes increasingly difficult, prolonging the challenges of unreliable power supply across the country.US stocks experience mixed fortunes on quiet day of tradingErik Pratt scores 20 as Milwaukee defeats North Central College 92-57

Villa secure 0-0 draw against depleted JuventusMany people are remembering former President Jimmy Carter, who died at the age of 100, after more than a year in hospice care. He was a Georgia peanut farmer who sought to restore trust in government as president and then built a reputation for tireless work as a humanitarian. He earned a Nobel Peace Prize in 2002 while making himself the most active and internationally engaged of ex-presidents. He was a peacemaker, a champion of democracy and public health, and a monitor of human rights around the world. Carter said his Baptist faith demanded that he do whatever he could, wherever he could, for as long as he could, to try to make a difference. "We're not going to see a political leader like that — you know, coming from the humble origins that he did, a peanut farmer. Someone who basically ran as a non-partisan candidate," said Boston University professor Tom Whalen. "He is a complicated fellow but the bottom line is that he had such enormous integrity both as president and in his post-presidency year that makes him a candidate, in my mind, for Mt. Rushmore." Massachusetts Gov. Maura Healey ordered flags in the state to be flown at half-staff through Jan. 28 in honor of Carter's life. "President Carter lived a life dedicated to peace, human rights, democracy and moral clarity. He set an enduring example of what it means to serve others, and his legacy will continue to inspire generations to come," Healey said in a statement. "I'm sending love and strength to the Carter family as they, and our nation, process this profound loss. May we all honor his memory by building a more just, peaceful and caring world."Bitcoin ( BTC -0.13% ) continued to surge in value this year, maintaining its dominance as the largest and most valuable cryptocurrency on the planet. But looking ahead to 2025 and beyond, there's another cryptocurrency that could eventually rival Bitcoin's No. 1 position. That cryptocurrency, of course, is Ethereum ( ETH -0.18% ) , which also surged in value this year. Should you dump Bitcoin for Ethereum next year? You might be surprised by the answer. Bitcoin versus Ethereum in 2025 For those who don't know, there are a few major differences between Bitcoin and Ethereum. Bitcoin is primarily used as a store of value, like gold, but it can also be used for value exchange, like a traditional currency. Many projects are working to make Bitcoin more functional, including a handful of DeFi initiatives, but for the moment, those are its basic uses. Ethereum, on the other hand, was designed specifically to be flexible and extensible in order to serve as a foundation for other decentralized tools, services, and applications. That means Ethereum has far more potential uses than Bitcoin. But what about the differences in 2025? What's in store for these currencies? A host of Layer 2 projects are looking to make Ethereum faster, cheaper, and more efficient. New DeFi, non-fungible tokens, and gaming applications should also make the protocol more attractive to both users and developers. But there could also be some foundational improvements. Pending proposals include the adoption of new sharding improvements that can boost the protocol's ability to scale without limiting throughput or raising costs for transactions. Bitcoin already had a halving event in 2024, and the next is not expected until 2028. Layer 2 options like the Lightning Network, meanwhile, may improve Bitcoin's ability to act as a means of exchange, though Ethereum has more development effort aimed at solving this particular scaling issue. In general, Bitcoin's story remains a simple one. In 2025, expect more attention and adoption for Bitcoin from both retail and institutional investors, with new Bitcoin-based exchange-traded funds and investment options allowing more and more people to gain exposure to the cryptocurrency without needing to worry about special tax or custody challenges. With these differences in mind, which cryptocurrency is the superior investment for 2025? Bitcoin Price data by YCharts Which leading cryptocurrency is the better bet for 2025? While Bitcoin and Ethereum are often compared, they really have very different long-term use cases. While Bitcoin may gain more functionality over time, it should be viewed mainly as a store of value. Gold's current market cap is nearly $18 trillion, while Bitcoin's is still around $2 trillion. If you believe Bitcoin will be around for a while, there's clearly long-term upside potential as it closes the gap with gold. At its core, Ethereum is fundamentally different from other cryptocurrencies because it's not just a digital currency -- it's an entire technological platform. The smart contracts platform has already attracted the largest and most active developer community in the blockchain space, which gives it a significant competitive advantage. However, investing in Ethereum requires understanding that you're not just betting on a currency; you're investing in the potential of digital services using decentralized technology in the future. While this broader scope makes Ethereum more volatile than Bitcoin, it also creates more opportunities for substantial growth. Think of it as the difference between buying in digital gold (Bitcoin) and investing in the future of software infrastructure (Ethereum). Should you ditch Bitcoin for Ethereum in 2025? Only if you want to bet on the rise of decentralized networks. If you're undecided, however, you can always do what I did: buy some of both.

Personal Finance Visa Rules Change: Major changes in US visa and H-1B program, Indians going to America will have to take care of these things By Shyamu Maurya December 22, 2024 0 9 Share Facebook Twitter Pinterest WhatsApp Telegram Visa Rules Change: Major changes in US visa and H-1B program, Indians going to America will have to take care of these things US Visa Changes: Indians looking for jobs in America should also know about the changes in visa rules. America has also announced new changes regarding the most popular H-1B visa. Most Indian citizens go to America for jobs through this visa. US H-1B Visa Changes: People going to America to study or work should be aware of the new visa rules. From January 1, 2025, many changes will be made to reduce the long wait for visa appointments at the US Embassy in India. At the same time, the US ‘Department of Homeland Security’ (DHS) is also going to make a big change in the H-1B visa program. These changes will make the visa process easier and faster for Indian tech professionals. Talking about the new rules for visa appointment, now the appointment can be rescheduled once without paying any additional fee. But if you reschedule for the second time or miss the appointment, you will need a new appointment. For this, you will again have to pay a non-refundable fee of $185 (about Rs 15,730). The US Embassy has said that people should reach on time on the day of appointment, so that the visa process continues smoothly and no one faces any problem. Changes in H-1B visa rules The US H-1B visa was being misused, to prevent which the government has made some changes so that only skilled professionals can get work permits. From January 17, 2025, applicants applying for H-1B visa will have to prove that their academic qualification is directly related to the job they are applying for. Due to the new rules, it will be difficult for those who do not have any specialization to get H-1B visa. In simple words, for IT sector jobs, you will get H-1B visa only if you have a degree in Computer Science or Engineering. Also, now the process of H-1B visa extension will also become easier. Immigration officers will be able to process the extension request on the basis of earlier approvals. In this way the paperwork will be reduced and decisions will come quickly. At the same time, now it will also be strictly checked whether the companies are following the terms of the H-1B program or not. Interview Waiver Program Expanded The Interview Waiver Program has been expanded. In this way, people who have previously applied for US visa will no longer need to give an interview. This will reduce the waiting time. Old records will be used to process new applications. The new rules will benefit the most those who travel to the US often or have a good visa history. The visas of these people will be renewed easily. These changes in the H-1B visa program show that the US government is committed to meeting the needs of key industries, including the tech industry. India is a major source of skilled workers for Silicon Valley and other US tech hubs. Therefore, these changes are considered an important step to reduce the backlog and meet the needs of high-demand sectors like IT. Shabana Mahmood, the justice secretary, said she had been briefed on how AI was used in other countries to monitor offender behaviour inside prisons. She told The Times Crime and Justice Commission that she was “very interested” in emerging technology that combines footage from CCTV cameras with AI to predict behaviour. She said it could be used in Britain to “get ahead of potential violent incidents” and to help prison governors run “more effective, less violent regimes”. The technology Mahmood is particularly interested in deploying in prisons involves AI software analysing CCTV footage of inmates’ behaviour to predict their next move.Seahawks are optimistic again and set to battle Cardinals for the NFC West lead
After further review, DeShaun Foster has reversed his stance on one central figure in the halftime brouhaha during the crosstown rivalry game. The UCLA coach acknowledged Wednesday that head performance coach Corey Miller — whom Foster had initially labeled a peacemaker — escalated tensions between the teams last weekend after video surfaced showing Miller making a mock crying gesture and giving USC players the middle finger. Miller expressed regret for his actions, Foster said, and would face unspecified discipline. “We talked about it, sat down and was able to figure that out internally and he felt pretty bad about that,” Foster said, “so he expressed his sentiments to the team, to the coaches and everybody and you’ve got to lead by example out here. You can’t be completely — you just can’t be out of control in any situation, especially when you’re in a [position] of power, so it was an unfortunate situation and he feels awful about what happened and getting a penalty and he made sure he made it right with the team.” Miller received one of three unsportsmanlike conduct penalties that went against UCLA, joining wide receiver Kwazi Gilmer and safety Bryan Addison. Foster said after the game that he was told the fracas started when a USC player punched Gilmer. UCLA was forced to kick off from its own five-yard line to start the third quarter as a result of the penalties, but the Trojans could not gain a first down and gave the ball back to the Bruins following a turnover on downs. Foster brought Miller back to UCLA to be part of his new staff before the season after Miller had spent the 2022 season as the Bruins’ director of speed and movement. Miller was the assistant director of strength and conditioning for the NFL’s Carolina Panthers during the 2023 season. “With his added NFL experience,” Foster said at the time of Miller’s hiring, “I feel there is no one better to uphold our pillars while preparing the Bruins for Big Ten Conference play and beyond.” Mo’ Money? Foster said he nominated defensive coordinator Ikaika Malloe for the Broyles Award that goes to the top assistant coach in college football. Might Foster also need to give Malloe a raise given that UCLA lost its last defensive coordinator when D’Anton Lynn doubled his salary by moving across town to USC? “This is a real family over here, so I think that he’s pretty comfortable,” Foster said, “but we still want to make sure that we honor him and let him know that we do value you and you’re a great coach for us.” Malloe’s two-year contract that expires after the 2025 season pays him $1 million annually — the same rate that Lynn made before his departure. Despite massive personnel losses in the offseason, Malloe has presided over a defense that ranks No. 7 in the country against the run by allowing just 99.3 rushing yards per game. UCLA ranks No. 46 nationally in total defense, giving up 346.3 yards per game. Decisions, decisions UCLA’s defense could get a major boost next season if Carson Schwesinger stays put. The linebacker who has gone from a walk-on to a finalist for the Butkus Award has another season of eligibility remaining, should he choose to use it. “He’s let me know early like, coach, we’re just going to finish the season and then assess everything after the season,” Foster said of Schwesinger’s message regarding his future. “He’s truly locked in on finishing this year the right way and I can respect that from a guy like that. I didn’t want to even want to put anything in his ear because whatever decisions he makes, I’m going to respect that because Carson’s that type of kid. He’s really going to do whatever’s best for him in that situation, especially if he gets the Butkus Award and the way that he came on and performed this season, you do deserve to get a shot and go to the NFL.” With the transfer portal set to open Dec. 9, Foster said, with a chuckle, that he wanted to know his players’ intentions about their futures by Dec. 5. “There’s a hard turnaround,” Foster said, “so we just want to make sure that we know exactly what’s going on with our team and how guys are feeling, so we know what we need to fill and what we need to do.”As the days passed, the man began to experience symptoms of acute toxicity, including nausea, vomiting, dizziness, and confusion.
