Trump nominates Charles Kushner to serve as US ambassador to France: 'Strong advocate'Farmer's 22 lead Youngstown State over Oakland 66-50Prime Minister and U.S. president-elect both shared thoughts on social media Saturday about their in Florida on Friday night. Trump offered his perspective about how the meeting at his Mar-a-Lago resort went with Trudeau in a post on Truth Social, saying they touched on a number of key issues related to border safety, illegal drug trafficking and, most importantly, trade. The meeting came days after Trump threatened to slap massive 25-per-cent tariffs on Canadian products being imported into the U.S. “I just had a very productive meeting” with Trudeau, Trump wrote on his social media network. “I made it very clear that the United States will no longer sit idly by as our Citizens become victims to the scourge of this Drug Epidemic.” Donald Trump’s post from Truth Social Saturday. “Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has made a commitment to work with us to end this terrible devastation of U.S. Families,” he continued. “We also spoke about many other important topics like Energy, Trade, and the Arctic. All are vital issues that I will be addressing on my first days back in Office, and before,” Trump said. In his own post on X Saturday afternoon, Trudeau shared a photo and thanked Trump for the dinner, writing “I look forward to the work we can do together, again.” “The Prime Minister and U.S. President Donald Trump shared a productive wide-ranging discussion over dinner last night, centered on collaboration and strengthening our relationship,” said Jenna Ghassabeh, a spokesperson in the Prime Minister’s Office, in a statement to the Star. “As Canada’s closest friend and ally, the United States is our key partner, and we are committed to working together in the interests of Canadians and Americans,” Ghassabeh added. Thanks for dinner last night, President Trump. I look forward to the work we can do together, again. However, there was no indication that Trump has changed his mind about imposing a massive 25-per-cent surcharge on all imports from Canada, which would have a devastating impact on Canada’s energy, auto and manufacturing exports. Trump’s post on Truth Social did not address it. The Star reported Friday that the face-to-face meeting was suggested by Trudeau, according to sources familiar with the communications between the two sides. The meeting included Canada’s Public Safety Minister Dominic LeBlanc, Trudeau’s chief of staff Katie Telford and several of Trump’s advisers and their wives, including North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum, nominated for Interior Secretary and Commerce Secretary nominee Howard Lutnick, a staunch enthusiast of tariffs. “We had a positive discussion about shared border security priorities, including working together to combat fentanyl trafficking,” LeBlanc posted on X. “It is clear from the Prime Minister’s meeting with President-elect Trump that Canada needs to act quickly to strengthen border security, energy security, and national defence if we want to secure an exemption from future tariffs,” said Goldy Hyder, head of the Business Council of Canada. The friendly conversation at the dinner was one step towards a collaborative relationship with the Trump administration, a senior Canadia government source said on a background-only basis to disclose some details of the private meeting. The conversation also proved that Trudeau could handle Trump, despite criticism from those including Pierre Poilievre, the source added. Poilievre previously and without the “brains or backbone” he presumably has to stand up to Trump. Ontario Premier Doug Ford said on X Saturday afternoon that he was glad Trudeau met Trump to learn more about the president-elect’s concerns. “Now we need the federal government to show us how they’ll honour their commitment to all premiers to make our border more secure,” said Ford. He added that Canada’s premiers are ready to meet at any time to review Trudeau’s promised plan to avoid “disastrous tariffs.” The two leaders and their teams discussed trade, border security, fentanyl, defence matters including NATO, Ukraine, and icebreakers (Canada, the U.S. and Finland recently agreed to a trilateral pact to rebuild their icebreaking fleets), the source said. Other topics on the table included China, energy issues and pipelines, including those that feed Canadian oil and gas into the U.S. like Keystone XL, Line 5, as well as the Trans-Mountain project and Canada’s liquid natural gas export capacity. The leaders also discussed next year’s G7 meeting, which Canada will chair in Kananaskis, Alta. It will be held seven years after Trump left the 2018 G7 at Charlevoix, Que. and in his opposition to U.S. steel and aluminum tariffs, the Star previously reported. Trump’s comments led many to believe he disliked Trudeau, but the two leaders managed a working relationship after the G7 summit six years ago and have had friendly conversations since Trump’s re-election, according to two Canadian sources, . Friday’s meetup was the first between the president-elect and a foreign leader, and comes just under two months before Trump is to be inaugurated as U.S. president.

US budget airlines are struggling. Will pursuing premium passengers solve their problems?Commentary: The Trump-Xi bromance has a chance in 2025Victor Wembanyama went to a park in New York City and played 1-on-1 with fans on Saturday. He even lost a couple of games. Not in basketball, though. Wemby was playing chess. Before the San Antonio Spurs left New York for a flight to Minnesota, Wembanyama put out the call on social media: “Who wants to meet me at the SW corner of Washington Square park to play chess? Im there,” Wembanyama wrote. It was 9:36 a.m. People began showing up almost immediately. Washington Square Park is a known spot for chess in New York — Bobby Fischer among others have famously played there, and it's been a spot used for multiple movie scenes featuring the game. Wembanyama was there for an hour in the rain, from about 10-11 a.m. He played four games, winning two and losing two before departing to catch the Spurs' flight. Wembanyama had been trying to get somewhere to play chess for the bulk of the team's time in New York — the Spurs played the Knicks on Christmas and won at Brooklyn on Friday night. The schedule never aligned, until Saturday morning. And even with bad weather, he bundled up to make it happen. He posed for photos with a couple of dozen people who showed up, braving a morning of cold rain to play chess with one of the NBA's biggest stars. “We need an NBA players only Chess tournament, proceeds go to the charity of choice of the winner,” he wrote on social media after his chess trip was over. Wembanyama is averaging 25.2 points and 10.1 rebounds this season, his second in the NBA after winning rookie of the year last season. AP NBA: https://apnews.com/hub/NBA

Israeli warplanes in the last several hours have been conducting major airstrikes against facilities across Syria, just 48 hours after the Assad government's fall and the entrance of Al-Qaeda linked militant factions into Damascus. "At least two explosions heard in Damascus have taken place in the area of Barzeh, north of Damascus, where the Syrian Scientific Studies and Research Centre has an office ," several eyewitnesses have told Reuters . "The SSRC has been sanctioned and previously struck for its links to chemical weapons production under toppled Syrian President Bashar al-Assad," the report continues. It is a location that Israel first struck all the way back in 2013, and has hit on several occasions since then. Sensitive military facilities formerly belonging to the Syrian Army and now defunct Assad defense ministry have also been destroyed by Israeli attacks across the south of Syria on Monday. A weapons warehouse near the Damascus international airport, which has ceased operations, has also been hit. Massive strikes have been reported on Latakia port as well, which giant fireballs lighting up the night sky. Amid the chaos of the HTS takeover of the country over the last week, and before any type of new government can coalesce in Damascus, it appears Israel is preemptively taking out all military technology and heavy weaponry before anyone else can access it . An Israeli broadcast correspondent from Kann writes that "An Israeli source tells me: Israel's goal is to destroy everything from Assad's army that could fall into the hands of the rebels - from tanks to missiles. We are destroying the equipment of the Assad army." 🚨 Breaking: Last night Israel 🇮🇱 destroyed all of Syria's 🇸🇾 remaining chemical weapons, missiles, air-defense systems, and air force, including Iranian military positions. Tens of billion dollars of Iranian investment went down the drain. pic.twitter.com/tM7Mdpcbon Israel has also expanded its penetration into historic Syrian territory in the south : After fighting wars on multiple fronts for months, Israel is now concerned that unrest in Syria could spill over into its territory. Israel also views the end of the Assad regime as a chance to disrupt Iran’s ability to smuggle weapons through Syria to the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah. The Israeli military over the weekend began seizing control of a demilitarized buffer zone in Syria created as part of a 1974 ceasefire between the countries. It said the move was temporary and meant to secure its border. But the incursion sparked condemnation, with critics accusing Israel of violating the ceasefire and possibly exploiting the chaos in Syria for a land grab . Indeed 'exploiting' the situation for a land grab is precisely what the game plan has likely been from the start, as both Israel and Turkey are the big winners in the Syria crisis, and with Assad gone (having been given asylum in Moscow). The Israeli attacks began even as HTS was making its way toward Damascus from Aleppo and Homs. ⚡️Israeli strikes on Latakia port, Syria pic.twitter.com/VDozyr6gOs According to more details of what's been hit in the ongoing Israeli attacks : New Israeli airstrikes are reported in Syria, targeting an airbase near the capital Damascus. Al Jazeera reports that the Qabr Essit Airport, used by the ousted Assad regime’s army for helicopters, was hit in the strikes . The airbase is located south of Damascus, close to the town of Aqraba. Some reports are saying that as many as 100 sites have been struck in the last 12-24 hours, but more is likely to be confirmed when the dust settles. Israel sources are saying 250 or more strikes . Jets and aerial equipment, and runways at bases are being obliterated. Part of Israel's aim also seems to be preventing pro-Iranian entities from ever popping up again in Syria, and to finally and definitively dismantle Hezbollah and Shia militias' arms networks. 🇸🇾| Meanwhile... Israel continues to destroy any remaining & abandoned military asset above ground with absolute no worry of resistance—as air defenses are offline. Israel bombed Syrian assets 150 times today, among them were Gazelle SA helicopters, completely gone. pic.twitter.com/IPJ6gLnCHQ Sunni hardline factions are also a feared element, given they could eventually turn the same weapons against Israel, and in the Golan Heights area, and as Israeli troops continue invading the south for a so-called buffer zone.

About 500 additional hospital beds need to be provided each year – the equivalent of a new hospital annually – to keep up with Ireland’s projected population growth, former taoiseach Leo Varadkar has said. Delivering the Irish Medical Organisation ’s annual Doolin lecture in Dublin on Saturday, the former Fine Gael leader and minister for health said he feared the pipeline of new hospital development projects was not sufficiently strong. He suggested a new €1 billion hospital was needed in Galway , where the existing facility is “just not what it should be”, and that significant investment was also required in Limerick and elsewhere. Mr Varadkar said he hoped the next programme for government would include a commitment to open about 5,000 additional hospital beds. He forecast that the Irish population would reach six million by about 2040. “When I was minister for health we had three hospital projects on the go – the national children’s hospital , the national forensic mental health hospital in Portrane and the National Rehabilitation Hospital in Dún Laoghaire. Two of these are open and the other will probably be commissioned next year or in 2026,” he said. However, Mr Varadkar said he was worried about the pipeline of capital development projects coming after that. He said the planned national maternity hospital project – to replace the existing facility at Holles Street – was “crawling along” and had not yet gone to tender or for construction. He said the “type of projects that we need – some of the big extensions” are not coming “which kind of worries me”. During his address to an audience at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland , Mr Varadkar said a shortage of hospital beds was at the heart of a lot of the problems in the Irish health system. “We have done a terrible thing in policy terms – a lot done with advice from medics and specialists – by reducing hospital beds by far too much and making the emergency department the only way through which most patients can get into the hospital,” he said. “That is a fundamental thing that has not been resolved yet.” [ Lucy Nugent has been appointed new chief executive of Children’s Health Ireland Opens in new window ] Mr Varadkar said in his defence as a former minister for health that he stopped the closure of hospital beds. He said over recent years governments had been increasing the bed stock “but not anywhere near what is required”. He forecast that health spending and health staffing would increase further in the years ahead but not at the rate experienced in recent times. He said the health service and the public should be “prepared for that”. He suggested health spending could rise by 3 or 4 per cent, about an additional €1 billion year, but not by €2 billion annually. “When I was minister for health, 2014-2016, at that time there were about 9,000 whole-time-equivalent doctors and dentists employed by the HSE ,” he said. “It is now at 14,000 – there has been a 50 per cent increase in number of doctors and dentists. A further 50 per cent increase would not be sustainable and not affordable.” Mr Varadkar also said Ireland was “an outlier” in terms of the number of staff in the health service who were trained overseas. He said 51 per cent of nurses and midwives in Ireland were foreign trained as well as more than a third of doctors. “[There is] no other country in the western world where the numbers are that high. Norway and the UK are not that far off, but we are a definite outlier in that regard,” he said. “Of course there is nothing wrong with being a foreign-trained doctor. My dad is one and was a very popular GP in west Dublin. “There is something not right when more than half of nurses are foreign trained and one third of doctors are.” “Something that has to be looked at in the years ahead both in terms of the number of people being training and what more we can do to ensure that more people who go abroad come back.” He said that more healthcare professionals who went abroad stayed there for good compared with those working in other sectors. Martin Wall is the former Washington Correspondent of The Irish Times. He was previously industry correspondentUnited States-based veteran activist Freeman Chari, who is also a Biomedical Scientist and Software Engineer, torched off a storm when he launched into an analysis of what he felt were the shortcomings of opposition leader Nelson Chamisa and his CCC party at the time. Shortly after Chari launched his no-holds barred critique, UK based lawyer Brighton Mutebuka also gave a detailed response. We publish both their contributions separately. We have put together a collection of Chari’s tweets on the topic in order of the dates he posted (oldest first). Let me be clear. I represent nobody except myself. Anything I say is my opinion and my experience. I don’t support individuals. I support ideas. I bring my own and I evaluate them against others. At this point I have different ideas about Zimbabwe from all other political players. I will be exploring my ideas with like minded folks. Hope that helps. The biggest problem in the pro-democracy movement is that we have so many corrupt people in there. Anyone exposing those people is quickly shut down hanzi you give ZANU PF ammunition. If you call them out privately they don’t stop. It did not start now. In the early 2000s there was a scholarship program in MDC for persecuted activists, soon it became a family affair. We have seen many of such initiatives, finances etc just being mishandled. We end up being quiet because of the law of unintended consequences but it doesn’t stop. It then goes into councils and the same unscrupulous characters carry the same behaviour into office. We defend them but they don’t stop. Transparency and accountability shouldn’t be expected from ZANU PF only. There can never be an alternative with these folks.😭 A party must be structured for maximal efficiency. There must be a clear distinction between the party and those elected to be MP, senators or councillors. Once elected you can’t hold other positions in the party. That way the party continues to function in people’s absence. A political party should be structured to run like a company. Those who take top leadership positions must be paid so they work 24/7 for the interests of the party. People with split interests tend to have split loyalty to a party. I don’t think practising lawyers should be anywhere near the pro-democratic movement leadership. If your job aides the oppression of people and you can’t recuse yourself then you aren’t fit to lead. It’s the same as having a soldier in leadership, one moment with you, next shooting you. Many years ago I used to write a lot about what needs to be done. Unfortunately the first reaction by those who should do is usually “That cannot be done in Zim!” In 2016, I decided to just do so that folks can see it can be done. Unfortunately, once you do, they want you to continue doing. When there is a proof of concept, it is upon others to scale☹️ I had never worked directly with Prof Welshman Ncube until 72hrs before the 2023 elections. He was not well but he said “I am going to call all the candidates from all the 3 Matabeleland provinces tomorrow then you distribute the agents money” He did that and we got all results from all polling stations in Matabeleland. No one in Mashonaland/Masvingo or Manicaland did this. We tried so many of the CCC leadership in those areas but most of them said they were busy with other things. So, in as much as you want me to bluetooth your hatred for him, I won’t because when we needed him, he delivered. What happened after elections is another story! The problem is that there is no introspection. Nobody stops to ask, what did we do wrong, what could have been done better, what needs to be changed. In the end you have people doing the same things they did in 2013, 2018, 2023. Politics must be incremental, you build on top of what has already been built... unfortunately, on one hand you have folks that say ngazvife titange kuti zero, on the other you have those who say if not built by me it doesn’t work. In the end every year we are at foundation level, with the same sand, same stones, same builders and same plan.... yet the environment keeps changing I wasn’t gonna address this seeing it is moot, but it is important that I do and it is my last comment on this. When CCC was formed in my conversations with NC (Nelson Chamisa) a number of us said to him, we will defend you with our lives out there but in private we will tell you the things that need to be fixed so we don’t fall into the same predicament we did with MDC-Alliance. Top was the need for a clear constitution with clearly articulated roles, I believe a draft constitution was made. Secondly, it was about structure and I remember giving him a document that had alternative structure which I worked on with Dr Magaisa. Lastly it was about branding etc Unfortunately Strategic Ambiguity took precedence. The people who defended this vehemently in private are the same people after election who ditched him. They were opportunists especially the Harare crew. What pained me more was that we had worked so hard for 2 yrs to build this but we had no way or leg to defend ourselves. Anyone could see our potential flaws but they were overlooked. This carried into the elections and candidate selection. We all know “Bereka Mwana” was stupid, but these comrades who supported it before they were outwitted/ousted should have known better way before this. They were selfish and thought they could keep their proximity to power through stupidity. After elections when NC failed to reign in the few MPs we had I could see we were sitting ducks. Every bara was hitting the head. In my view, even through ego we had continued on Strategic Ambiguity, if the fundamentals of organization building had been done right behind the scenes we could have had a fighting chance. I fear without the willingness to retrospect and introspect we will go round and round in circles with multiple heartbreaks. I am not willing to go through that again! And by the way, I responded to Brighton Mutebuka the way I did because he is privy to some of these things. It is unfortunate it came out the way it did but I have no regrets whatsoever. Ciao😊 Let me say it one last time. Mandla was Thabani Mpofu and Pachedu’s idea which was mooted maybe a month or so before election. I was never involved. I told them what they wanted to achieve takes yrs of planning. Whatever they built was never used. What you call Mandla was work that a separate team called CredibleVote worked hard for 2 years. That team built the WhatsApps bot where you checked who to vote for after maisirwa madouble candidates. Guess what about 500 000 voters used it. Our data shows CCC wld have lost 13 seats in Harare if we had not intervened. CredibleVote is the one that built the parallel tabulation system with multiple Starlink supported centers, satellite rovers and meshtastic nodes. It’s the one that managed to tabulate results from 10400 or so Polling Stations. The results we published in August. CredibleVote is also the one that built the donation platform yataiti CitizenAgent which Mazizi used to donate for polling agents. We raised $109k which we had to distribute in 48hrs before elections because we had waited for CCC to use their structures to do it but it was all chaotic. The people we call CredibleVote were a small team of developers, GIS experts, climbers, roving agents, data entry people. Most of them were unpaid volunteers. They are here on X. So, when you look back... Our role was not to replace CCC. We knew politicians are good at talking but not execution so we were there to plug holes that we had seen in 2018. We just wanted to avoid kuzoti “Dai makadai”. We did what we could but it wasn’t enough to remove ZANU PF.House GOP selecting new committee leaders to advance Trump’s agenda in 2025

Today, in “Stories that made us read the portmanteau ‘romantasy’ and make our brains treat it like English” news: TikTok’s printing books now. Like, the paper things. With the covers? John Wick killed a guy with one, once. Anyway, this is per The Guardian , which reports that ByteDance, the Chinese company that owns and operates the video-based social media service, is getting into the book publishing business, focused primarily on titles in genres close to the center of the “BookTok” subculture that flourishes on the service. The company previously published e-books, but has now decided that the market will support physical titles, too, with the first such novel chosen for publication being Caitlin Cross’ On Screen & Off Again , about two childhood friends who starred on a TV show together as children reconnecting in their young adulthood, and, yep, we can already see that ticking a lot of boxes. We might gently poke fun at the TikTok crowd, but book recommendations have become a huge part of the service’s appeal over the last few years: BookTok took off during the early months of the COVID-19 lockdowns, and hasn’t really slowed down since. A report from a year ago stated that there were roughly 60 billion videos tagged with the #BookTok label on the site, and the trend’s influence on actual book sales has been pronounced. No wonder that ByteDance wants to wet its beak by cutting out the middleman, even if it does involve actually messing around with physical objects like messy ink and paper. (As an added bonus, it’s not like the U.S. government, which has been pissed at the company for years over allegations that it was doing nefarious things with all the personal information Americans broadcast directly down its throat every single second of every single day, is going to turn around and start banning books, right?) ECO nations to convene in Iran for key ministerial summitPanthers rookie tight end Ja'Tavion Sanders released from hospital after suffering neck injuryJaguars place QB Trevor Lawrence (concussion) on IRBy Ja'han Jones Artificial intelligence is helping spread dubious and even outright false claims on social media, empowering propagandists and misinformation peddlers in new ways. Experts in the field are now discussing ways to address that. That makes Texas Sen. Ted Cruz mad. Not about the propaganda. About the people trying to stop it. Cruz wrote a letter in November to Attorney General Merrick Garland that was published this week , demanding that the Department of Justice probe “how Europeans are seeking to hamstring US AI development.” Now, Europeans aren’t actually trying to hamstring U.S. A.I. development, but in the letter, Cruz refers to a November summit the Biden administration hosted in San Francisco for several countries that — along with the United States — have launched their own “A.I. safety institutes” to combat the dangers of artificial intelligence. Cruz’s letter alleges that one of the summit’s participants, an Oxford-based nonprofit called the Centre for the Governance of Artificial Intelligence, is essentially acting as an unregistered foreign agent because the group has provided guidance to U.S. lawmakers about how to combat dangerous misuses of artificial intelligence. The letter fits a pattern of right-wingers fuming over efforts to stem the tide of dangerous online content that's intended to deceive or manipulate the public. True to form, Cruz portrayed the U.K. AI safety institute and the Centre for the Governance of Artificial Intelligence’s work as nefarious: AI has vast potential to improve human welfare and society. But some technocrats and academics believe AI poses severe “risks” to “safety,” which they define as “disinformation,” “bias and underrepresentation,” and “risks to the environment.” Hence, they want governments to globally adopt enforceable “standards” that would empower unelected bureaucrats to actively oversee AI developers and products, and censor disfavored code and AI-generated material. For the record, all of the things Cruz mentioned are real problems — and putting them in scare quotes doesn't change that. The senator went on to claim the aforementioned European-led groups are talking about their A.I. concerns “not just to gain control over AI’s development, but to also gain control over information flow and a citizen’s ability to communicate with others free from government intrusion.” This was a dizzying spin from Cruz, considering the most powerful technocrats in the world — Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg , for example — seem willing to allow false or deceptive content to pervade their social platforms, and in Musk’s case, willing to use this manipulative content to his advantage . These are the controlling technocrats worthy of our worries. Nonetheless, Cruz’s letter includes Musk’s Orwellian falsehood that “[w]hen a politician says they want to stop 'misinformation' what they really mean is that they want to stop anyone from contradicting their lies.” As The Associated Press explained , the November summit’s agenda “address[ed] topics such as how to better detect and combat a flood of AI-generated deepfakes fueling fraud, harmful impersonation and sexual abuse.” And Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo seemed to undercut Cruz’s kvetching at the conference when she said the U.S. AI institute is not a regulatory body — and thus, incapable of enforcing anything — and also “not in the business of stifling innovation.” But I think the source of Cruz’s angst is clear. Republicans leaned heavily on A.I.-generated propaganda and A.I.-powered social media algorithms to help spread dubious (at times, outright false) claims this election cycle. And anyone seen as a potential threat to similar efforts in the future is deemed an enemy of the party — if not the nation as a whole. Ja'han Jones is The ReidOut Blog writer. Adani Group 's ambitious plan to invest more than $100 billion (~₹85,000 crore) in the energy transition business and scale up its renewable energy operations over the next decade could face delays following the indictment of the conglomerate and its founder-chairman Gautam Adani by the US Department of Justice and the Securities and Exchange Commission, according to analysts. The majority of the investment is geared towards building facilities to manufacture electrolysers for producing green hydrogen , wind power turbines, and solar panels, besides establishing solar parks. Adani Group's renewable energy arm Adani Green Energy (AGEL), also India's largest renewable energy company, follows a debt-fuelled growth model with a 70:30 debt-equity structure like most peers. "Funding channels will inevitably squeeze across the Adani Group, with creditors likely to reduce or limit their group-wide exposure," said research firm CreditSights, adding Adani Green has the weakest liquidity and credit fundamentals in the conglomerate, and given the US indictment is centred on AGEL, its fundraising plans may hit a roadblock. AGEL has a short-term debt of about $2 billion, largely in the form of project loans, with refinancing emerging as the biggest concern in the near term. ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. — In losing Sunday’s battle with the Buffalo Bills, perhaps the best team in football, Jerod Mayo won the war. Best I can tell, he’s staying put. For 2025, and maybe beyond. To his angry fan base and incredulous pockets of the New England Patriots’ media corps, remember Mayo’s future doesn’t hinge on winning this season. It’s not about what you want, or what I think. It’s about the Krafts, who hand-picked Mayo to succeed Bill Belichick four and a half years before he actually did, believing in him, and finding reasons to maintain that belief. In the eyes of someone who wants to believe, Sunday supplied enough reason. The Patriots led at halftime, then lost by three as 14-point underdogs. They became the first team since mid-October to hold the Bills under 30 points. Drake Maye outplayed the next MVP of the league for most of the game and took another step toward his destiny as a franchise quarterback, If that sounds like a low bar, that’s because it is. Such is life in Year 1 of a rebuild, a multi-year process ownership has committed to seeing through to the end with their organizational pillars now in place: Mayo, Maye and de facto GM Eliot Wolf. As frustrating as this 3-12 campaign has been, there are always nuggets of optimism amid the rubble of a losing season; particularly if you want to find them. The Krafts do, and so does Maye, who loves his head coach, by the way; calling questions about Mayo’s job security “BS.” “We’ve got his back,” Maye said post-game. Maye’s voice matters. Certainly more than any number of fans or media members. Ever since media-fueled speculation that Mayo could get canned at the end of his first season began rising, the caveat has always been the same: if, a Gillette Stadium-sized “if,” the Patriots bomb atomically down the stretch, ownership could pull the plug on Mayo. NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport became the latest to join that chorus Sunday with this pregame report: “The Krafts want to keep Jerod Mayo,” he said. “They believe he is the leader for the organization for the future, and they knew it would be a multi-year process to get this thing right. Now if things go off the rails, if they really start to struggle and he loses the locker room the last couple games of the season, we’ve seen this thing turn. “But as of now, the Patriots believe Jerod Mayo is their leader for the future.” Well, Mayo hasn’t lost the locker room. That’s a fact. To a man, both in public and from those I’ve spoken to in private, Patriots players believe in their head coach. Mayo might be a players’ coach, yes, in the best and worst senses. But the Patriots were a few plays away Sunday from pulling off their largest upset since Super Bowl XXXVI. “I think we’re building something good,” Maye said. The Patriots also played their best half of football this season against their toughest opponent yet. Another fact. Now, to the frustrated, I am with you. To the shocked, I understand. But to the trigger-happy, lay down your arms. Mayo, by all accounts, is returning in 2025. Alex Van Pelt, however, is another story. In the same vein that the Krafts could have viewed Sunday’s performance as a reason to save Mayo — despite his pathetic punt at midfield, down 10 with just eight and a half minutes left — they could have convinced themselves their offensive coordinator is the real problem. After all, team president Jonathan Kraft was visibly exasperated over Van Pelt’s play-calling during the Pats’ loss at Arizona a week earlier. Four days later, Van Pelt told reporters he had yet to hear from his boss. Well, that time may be coming. Trailing by three in the fourth quarter Sunday, Van Pelt called a pass that resulted in an unnecessary lateral and game-winning touchdown for Buffalo. His offense later operated like it was taking a Sunday drive with the game on the line, using up 3:16 of the final 4:19 en route to its final touchdown. Van Pelt, finally, weaponized Maye’s legs in critical situations, something that arguably should have been done weeks ago. Not to mention, Van Pelt’s top running back can’t stop fumbling, and the offensive line remains a hot mess. Call him Alex Van Fall Guy. Because Van Pelt’s offense, for the first time in a while, under-performed relative to Mayo’s defense. On merit, he deserves to stay; a case that’s harder to make for defensive coordinator DeMarcus Covington. But it’s not about merit this season. It’s not about what you want. It’s not about what I think. It’s about the Krafts; what they see, what they want, what they believe. Even in defeat. ____ Respond: Write a letter to the editor | Write a guest opinion Subscribe to stay connected to Tucson. WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (AP) — It wasn’t how Duke drew up the final play, but it worked out perfect for the Blue Devils in Saturday’s 23-17 victory over Wake Forest. Maalik Murphy threw a 39-yard touchdown pass to Jordan Moore as time expired, allowing Duke to end the regular season with three consecutive victories. Murphy said he realized he took too long to make a decision after the last snap. “I knew at that point I had to make a play,” he said. “The damage was already done, time was ticking.” With the score tied at 17, the Blue Devils (9-3, 5-3 Atlantic Coast Conference) moved 76 yards in 1:22 after forcing a Wake Forest punt. It appeared that Duke might run out of time in the slow-developing play, but Moore improvised and broke free along the right side, caught the ball at the 10-yard line and spun into the end zone to complete a comeback from 14 points down in the second half. “The play that Maalik and Jordan put together was magical,” Duke coach Manny Diaz said. “Nobody thought a 5-yard route would turn into a (long) touchdown.” So instead of a long field-goal attempt, Duke had something better. “I just decided to take it down the field,” Moore said. “I think that’s a testament to our chemistry. ... Maalik had the confidence in himself to make that kind of play.” It resulted in Duke’s sixth victory by seven points or less. “It’s like a perfect exclamation point to our season,” Diaz said. “An unbelievable way to finish our season.” Murphy racked up with 235 yards on 26-for-34 passing. Moore, who was down with an injury after a reception earlier in the second half, made five catches for 98 yards. Hank Bachmeier threw for 207 yards and a touchdown as Wake Forest (4-8, 2-6) ended its second straight four-win season with a four-game losing streak. “A heartbreaking loss,” Demon Deacons coach Dave Clawson said. “It’s a tough way to lose a game and a tough way to end the season.” Tate Carey’s 8-yard run, Matthew Dennis’ 37-yard field goal and Horatio Fields’ 9-yard reception across 11 minutes of game time gave Wake Forest a 17-3 lead with nine minutes left in the third quarter. Duke took advantage of a short field following a punt, moving 42 yards in four plays to score on Star Thomas’ 3-yard run. The Blue Devils recovered a fumble on the ensuing kickoff and converted on Murphy’s 2-yard run with 12:57 left to pull even. “What has been proven is that we’re mentally tough,” Diaz said. “We’re not going to do everything perfect.” Record receiver Taylor Morin became Wake Forest’s all-time leader in receiving yards with 2,974. He picked up 47 yards on eight catches on Saturday. Morin, in his fifth season, passed former NFL player Ricky Proehl, who had 2,929 yards in the late 1980s. The takeaway Duke: The Blue Devils have secured at least a nine-win season for the second time in three seasons, this one coming in Diaz’s first season. They racked up a 4-0 record against in-state opponents, including comebacks to top North Carolina and Wake Forest. “Every quest that we have for championships starts in our own state,” Diaz said. Wake Forest: The Demon Deacons punted on their final three possessions of the season. They finished with a 1-6 record in home games. “It’s been a tough year, a long year, and I’m proud of our team and how hard they fought,” Clawson said. (AP Photo/John Locher) COPPER MOUNTAIN, Colo. (AP) — For a pair of lower-level downhill events, this sure had plenty of Olympic medal-capturing and World Cup-winning ski racers. The stage belonged to Lindsey Vonn , the 40-year-old who took another step on her comeback trail Saturday with her first races in nearly six years. Vonn wasn't particularly speedy and finished in the middle of the pack on a cold but sunny day at Copper Mountain. Times and places weren't the mission, though, as much as getting used to the speed again and gaining the necessary points to compete on the World Cup circuit this season. Vonn accomplished both, finishing 24th in the first downhill race of the day and 27th in the second. She posted on social media after the FIS races that she had enough points to enter World Cup events. The timing couldn't be more perfect — the next stop on the women's circuit is Beaver Creek, Colorado, in a week. Vonn, who used to own a home in nearby Vail, hasn't committed to any sort of timetable for a World Cup return. “Today was a solid start and I had a blast being in start with my teammates again!” Vonn wrote on X . “While I’m sure people will speculate and say I’m not in top form because of the results, I disagree. This was training for me. I’m still testing equipment and getting back in the groove.” Her competition — a veritable who's who of high-profile ski racers — applauded her efforts. “I don't expect her to come back and win — just that she comes back and she has fun,” said Federica Brignone of Italy, a former overall World Cup champion and three-time Olympic medalist. “She's having fun, and she’s doing what she loves. That’s the best thing that she could do.” In the first race on a frigid morning, Vonn wound up 1.44 seconds behind the winning time of 1 minute, 5.79 seconds posted by Mirjam Puchner of Austria. In her second race through the course later in the morning, Vonn was 1.53 seconds behind Cornelia Huetter of Austria, who finished in 1:05.99. Huetter is the reigning season-long World Cup downhill champion. “It’s really nice to compare with her again, and nice to have her (racing) again,” Huetter said. “For sure, for the skiing World Cup, we have a lot of more attention. It's generally good for all racers because everyone is looking.” Also in the field were Nadia Delago of Italy, who won a bronze medal in downhill at the 2022 Beijing Olympics, and Puchner, the Olympic silver winner in super-G in Beijing. In addition, there was Marta Bassino of Italy, a winner of the super-G at the 2023 world championships, and two-time Olympic champion Michelle Gisin of Switzerland. “For me, it was really a training, but it was fun to have a World Cup race level right here,” Gisin said. “It was a crazy race.” Vonn remains a popular figure and took the time after each run to sign autographs for young fans along with posing for photos. When she left the sport, Vonn had 82 World Cup race victories, which stood as the record for a woman and within reach of the all-time Alpine record of 86 held by Swedish standout Ingemar Stenmark. The women’s mark held by Vonn was surpassed in January 2023 by Mikaela Shiffrin, who now has 99 wins — more than any Alpine ski racer in the history of the sport. Shiffrin is currently sidelined after a crash in a giant slalom event in Killington, Vermont , last weekend. Vonn’s last major race was in February 2019, when she finished third in a downhill during the world championships in Sweden. The three-time Olympic medalist left the circuit still near the top of her game. But all the broken arms and legs, concussions and torn knee ligaments took too big a toll and sent her into retirement. She had a partial knee replacement last April and felt good enough to give racing another shot. “It's very impressive to see all the passion that Lindsey still has,” Gisin said. Also racing Saturday was 45-year-old Sarah Schleper, who once competed for the United States but now represents Mexico. Schleper was the next racer behind Vonn and they got a chance to share a moment between a pair of 40-somethings still racing. “I was like, ‘Give me some tips, Lindsey,’” Schleper said. “She’s like, ‘Oh, it’s a highway tuck, the whole thing.’ Then she’s like, ‘It’s just like the good old days.’" ___ AP skiing: https://apnews.com/hub/alpine-skiing Pat Graham, The Associated Press See a typo/mistake? Former Manchester United star Owen Hargreaves has described Arsenal’s youngster Ethan Nwaneri has really special. Nwaneri opened his Premier League goals account after netting Arsenal’s third goal in the 3-0 win against Nottingham Forest on Saturday. The 17-year-old had also scored in the Carabao Cup this season. Speaking after Nwaneri’s impressive showing against Forest, Hargreaves believes he has a big role to play for the Gunners this season. “Brilliant player. That’s what Ethan is good at, on the half-turn, receiving the ball from anywhere,” the former Bayern Munich midfielder was qouted on Arsenal News Central. “Great weighted pass and gets himself into a great spot. Look at that. 17. He passes it into the goal, he doesn’t smash it. “Great cut back from Raheem Sterling. But this young man is really special. He’s going to be a feature for this Arsenal team for a very long time.” Meanwhile, Arsenal returned to Winning ways after failing to win any of their last four games in all competitions. The Russian government does not plan to fine people for visiting banned websites with the help of Virtual Private Network (VPN) services, the country’s media regulator, Roskomnadzor, has told RT. The technology allows users to create a secure connection between their device and the server, as well as hiding their IP addresses and bypassing firewalls and blocks. Earlier this month, Roskomnadzor issued a draft order that would require telecom operators to provide it with data on internet users who visit blocked websites. If the legislation is adopted, the regulator will reportedly be able to monitor any attempts to bypass firewalls or access blocked websites using VPNs. On Wednesday, Hi-Tech Mail news outlet reported that the order would allow the regulator to fine people for using VPN, citing IT experts. Yuri Gizatullin, founder of TIQUM IT firm, told the news outlet that Roskomnadzor has the technical means to do so, but noted, however, that such measures would “raise questions” about data privacy. According to Roskomnadzor, it has no intention of fining VPN users. “There is a gross error in such assumptions,” the regulator stated, noting that its draft order targeting VPNs “does not and cannot introduce fines.” “The said draft order of Roskomnadzor does not touch upon the use of VPN services,” it added, slamming the report as “fake.” Anton Nemkin, a member of the State Duma Committee on Information Policy, Technology and Communications, also denied the report. He explained that the measure would be nearly impossible to introduce, as the line between legal and illegal use of VPNs is difficult to determine. The issue of introducing penalties for the use of VPN services and possibly banning them has been raised in Russia repeatedly. Since the start of the military operation in Ukraine in February 2022, Western nations have banned multiple Russian news organizations, accusing them of spreading ‘disinformation’, while allowing anti-Russia propaganda to appear on their websites and social media. Russia responded by blacklisting a number of Western media outlets and platforms. Citing anti-Russian sentiments, misinformation, and censorship of Russian media outlets, Roskomnadzor banned access to sites such as Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and outlets like the BBC and Deutsche Welle. However, these websites are still widely accessible in Russia through VPN services. While VPN services have not been banned in the country, in March this year, Roskomnadzor restricted the advertising of them. In November, it also banned the distribution of scientific and statistical information about VPN services, with the exception of those that provide secure remote access. The regulator has also been blocking VPN services that violate its rules.

Canada's Trudeau says he had an 'excellent conversation' with Trump in Florida after tariffs threatUnion Minister for Hotels and Tourism Dr Thet Thet Khine received Mr David Liu, Chairperson of the Exploring Myanmar Culture and Tourism Organization based in Yangon, Myanmar, yesterday morning at the Union Minister’s guest hall. The discussion centred on strengthening Myanmar-China tourism promotion efforts. Key points included enhancing collaboration between government and private sectors from both nations, increasing awareness of Myanmar’s tourist destinations among Chinese travellers through Chinese social media platforms, and encouraging Chinese investors to engage in Myanmar’s hotel and tourism sectors. They also explored inviting Chinese tourists via maritime cruise ships, organizing cruise trips, and advancing tourism promotion initiatives. The Union Minister and Mr David Liu discussed cooperative opportunities with the Exploring Myanmar Culture and Tourism Organization to attract more Chinese visitors. At the meeting, Mr David Liu received a formal certificate recognizing him as a representative of Myanmar-China tourism promotion. — MNA/KZLT he other day, I got a monthly call from my two civil friends from Manipur, a Kuki and a Meitei. They had struck an emotional chord with me during my two-year command of the Churachandpur-based 27 Sector of the Assam Rifles in the capacity of Deputy Inspector-General from 2013. Both had been beneficiaries of the artificial limb, widely known as the “Jaipur foot”. After a brief tete-a-tete with them, a wave of nostalgia washed over me recollecting a free artificial limb camp organised in collaboration with Shree Bhagwan Mahaveer Viklang Sahayata Samiti, Jaipur. I vividly recall my first day in office when my staff took me around the Sector headquarters premises. Though there is no discrimination based on community in the Army or Assam Rifles, I found the bonhomie between Kuki and Meitei soldiers not up to the desired level. I found one barracks Kuki-dominated, while the other was largely of Meiteis. It somehow did not gel with my grooming and ethos of my parent battalion, 27 Punjab, which was the pilot project for a mixed battalion of Sikhs, Dogras and the Other Indian Classes. As a Commander, I was determined to break the ice between Kukis and Meiteis. I decided to implement the time-tested standing operating procedure of the buddy system, though a hybrid one — the buddy pair to have one Kuki and one Meitei each. Just to set an example, I set the ball rolling with my Commander’s secretariat. I selected a Kuki as my PA and a Meitei as my radio operator. I organised all the soldiers of the Sector HQ into hybrid buddy pairs. Every soldier is supposed to remain with his buddy 24x7 whether during operations or having food. Within a week, I could sense the bonds strengthening between both communities. Witnessing the success of this pilot project at the Sector HQ, I enforced the same SOP in all the six battalions under my command. I recount how in one deadly ambush, a Kuki scout was instrumental in saving the life of his Meitei buddy scout by charging at the militants while firing a fusillade from his AK-47. This inflection point snowballed into conviviality between the Kuki and Meitei villages. The festivals of Kukis and Meiteis were jointly celebrated with equal gusto and fervour. Back to the artificial limb camp. Despite catering for some reserve limbs on the last day, we were left with just six artificial limbs while we had 12 beneficiaries — six Kukis and six Meiteis — still on the waiting list. My staff was in a quandary with anxiety writ large on their faces for fear of favouring a particular community. I advised them to keep a cool head and just identify the most needy three Kukis and three Meiteis. The next morning, we tried to identify the six most deserving cases. Suddenly, I saw an aged Kuki walk up to us with a pensive look. “Sir, let all these six Meitei people take the ‘Jaipur foot’ as they are quite young. We have already lived our lives,” the septuagenarian sporting an off-kilter hat said in a gravelly voice. His words had tugged at my heartstrings which left me utterly dumbfounded. Meiteis who were overhearing politely declined. I immediately dialled the top man of the Jaipur samiti and made a frantic request for an additional six prosthetic limbs. Thankfully, he sent them on the flight the next day. Finally, all the 12 beneficiaries left the camp happily walking confidently on their own. The unwavering spirit of both communities to sacrifice for each other remains etched in my mind. Against the backdrop of the now strife-torn Manipur, I pray for those times to come back. advityanidhi14@gmail.com Published - December 08, 2024 12:54 am IST Copy link Email Facebook Twitter Telegram LinkedIn WhatsApp Reddit

An Oregon man who threatened a Helena Motor Vehicles Division employee was sentenced Thursday to the Department of Corrections for five years, with all suspended except 34 days. Scott Lee McClintock, 60, made threats to the employee in March after she declined to process his out-of-state license transfer because his birth certificate was in pieces and could not be accepted, a Helena Police Department detective said. He was charged with felony threats or improper influence in official or political matters and felony intimidation. Lewis and Clark County Attorney Kevin Downs told District Court Judge Christopher Abbott the Motor Vehicle Division employee moved away from Helena and quit her job because of the threats. Court documents state McClintock threatened to shoot her and other employees with a shotgun because they would not process the request after he was told it was not recommended to drive with an invalid license. Employees told the defendant if he decided to drive he may receive a citation, so he said he would shoot law enforcement too, the detective said. McClintock gave a statement before sentencing, but the judge told him "You're kind of talking yourself into a harsher sentence a little bit" when he finished. The defendant talked about how he helps people and tries to do the right thing. "I don't have a violent streak in me," he said. The state's recommendation was five years to the DOC with all but 60 days suspended, which meant he would have spent 26 days in jail had the sentence not been changed to 34 days. The 34 days were already served during his initial arrest. Abbott did not know if it would be impactful to place him behind bars due to the jail being over capacity. "You had mentioned that the jail was a little over (capacity), when they arrested me and took me to jail they didn't treat me very nicely ... I slept on the floor the whole time I was there," McClintock said. He called the situation a "he-said she-said" incident, while showing little remorse or accountability for the trauma he had caused the victim, in Abbott's eyes. "When you're facing something that's he-said she-said, his word is going to be taken. I'm going to take the plea deal and I don't feel strongly that I'm a threat to society," McClintock said. Abbott said what disturbed him about cases like this one was when someone came in and pleaded guilty to receive a benefit and once that is complete, they say they did not do anything wrong. "You've taken the victim posture," Abbott said.beta78 slot

OPEC Secretary General Haitham al-Ghais used his speech at the UN Climate Change Conference in Baku on Nov. 20 to emphasize the pivotal role oil and gas continue to play, dubbing hydrocarbons a “gift from God,” as the producer group looks to stamp its narrative on the world’s leading climate event. Ghais was echoing somewhat controversial opening comments on Nov. 12 by Ilham Aliyev, the president of OPEC+ member Azerbaijan, which is hosting COP29. “Petroleum and petroleum-derived products continue to shape how we heat and cool our homes, construct our buildings and transport ourselves from A to B,” Ghais said, pointing to the role of hydrocarbons in food production and transportation, as well as medical research and manufacturing. “However access to the benefits of these products, benefits unfortunately often taken for granted, is far from universal,” he added, noting that 685 million people lack electricity access — most of them in Africa — and 2.1 billion rely on unsafe cooking fuels. The challenge, Ghais said, is to ensure energy access and meet future demand while reducing emissions. As a result, the Paris Agreement, signed in 2015, which saw countries agree to restrict global warming to 1.5 C above pre-industrial levels, should focus on cutting emissions, not rejecting energy sources, the secretary general added. Parties at the summit were inching toward an agreement on Nov. 20 to mobilize financing to help nations trim emissions. The last COP agreement, agreed in Dubai in 2023, was held up partly by oil producers opposing suggestions of a fossil fuel “phase out,” sources told S&P Global Commodity Insights at the time. Unlike other forecasters, including the bearish International Energy Agency and Commodity Insights, OPEC, which sees itself as the swing producer in the crude market, does not see oil demand peaking through 2050, insisting rising consumption in non-OECD nations will drive demand ever higher. Indeed, the fact that 600 million people in sub-Saharan Africa lack access to electricity has become a rallying cry for OPEC+, which includes African producers — Nigeria, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, Republic of Congo, Sudan and South Sudan. Meanwhile, OPEC has claimed that warnings of peak oil could sap vital investment needed to meet global demand in the absence of scalable alternative energy sources. Its members hold 79.1% of the world’s proven crude reserves, equivalent to 1.24 trillion barrels, and expect to be the last men standing in the oil market due to their relatively low cost of production. Nevertheless, with members’ budgets underpinned by oil revenues, OPEC has pushed back against efforts to restrict fossil fuel use. The Vienna-based group has suggested new technologies, such as carbon capture and reductions in flaring, can help reduce the climate impact of oil and gas, but critics claim such technologies will only prolong fossil fuel use. “OPEC has consistently advocated a balanced approach where nothing and no one should be dismissed,” Ghais told COP29 attendees. “We need to embrace all energies, leverage all available tech and ensure that the needs of all peoples around the world are taken into account.” The heavy presence of the oil and gas sector did not go unnoticed at the world’s largest climate summit, with oil majors, smaller companies and organizations such as OPEC out in full force. Last year at COP28, world leaders agreed to work toward “transitioning away from fossil fuels” despite stiff opposition from various oil producers including OPEC. This year, many parties including the EU sought further details on the measures needed to accelerate the shift from oil, gas and coal, amid pressure to reaffirm that commitment pledged in Dubai, prompting significant pushback from petrostates like Saudi Arabia, with a number of them negotiating text excluding the words “transitioning away from fossil fuels.” In the latest text of the so-called UAE dialogue, which builds on last year’s commitments, there was nevertheless a passing mention. The UAE dialogue “will provide a space for consideration of the energy transition in developing countries, including action and support for their transition away from fossil fuels, and innovative solutions for both developed and developing countries,” it says. A man convicted as an accomplice to a 2007 murder asked a judge Monday afternoon to have the remaining seven years of his sentence suspended. Michael Soto, 35, appeared in court wearing a green prison jumpsuit and smiled at his mother, sister and two friends at the beginning of the hearing. He was found guilty of giving a handgun to a friend who shot and killed Aaron Kar on Jan. 2, 2007. He was originally sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. He was 17 at the time of the crime. In 2012, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that a life without parole sentence for someone under the age of 18 violated constitutional protections against cruel and unusual punishment. A judge resentenced him in 2019 to 25 years to life after a hearing. The New Hampshire Supreme Court later ruled the decision could be applied retroactively. Prosecutor Benjamin Agati objected to giving Soto any relief from the sentence, which had been reduced about five years ago in 2019. “The defendant has not taken responsibility for loading the gun, wiping down the gun, handing it to Roscoe White and then disposing of the gun afterward,” White said. Soto’s lawyers, Charles Bookman and Ghazi Al-Marayati, filed a nine-page request for the suspension back in July. They mentioned he earned his GED in 2013 and is in group sessions on post-traumatic stress disorder, socialization, social skills and coping mindfully. Soto told Judge Daniel Will during a brief statement that he is truly sorry about what he did. “The prosecutor said I didn’t take responsibility, but back then, I was just a child. I was a juvenile,” he said. “I didn’t trust nobody.” He said he took responsibility in 2019 during resentencing and continues to do so. “I am really just looking for you to just have faith in me and to give me an opportunity to show the man that I became now that I strive every day to be a better version of myself.” Soto received mental health counseling during a stay at a prison in Kansas in 2015 where he reported many years of childhood abuse and trauma. “This is really about a 17-year-old and now a man in his 30s,” Bookman said. “We have someone who has gone through a process. He had a difficult upbringing.” Soto has conducted everything offered at the prison and he continues to improve himself, his attorneys said. Earlier this year, he took a course called “Dealing with Feelings” at the prison, according to court documents. “When we look to the future, things look very good for Mr. Soto to be a productive member of society,” Bookman said. Most of Soto’s rehabilitation efforts were brought up during the 2019 sentencing, Agati said. “We are encouraged by the work that he has done and we think that will reflect once it gets to his parole hearing,” Agati said. “He will get to live the years of life that Aaron never gets to have.” Agati said Kar family members object to the request for early release. Judge Will took the request under advisement. jphelps@unionleader.com

New French government named after previous one collapsed in budget fightAnthony Albanese's nemesis breaks down on live TV - as Greens suffer a major blow Greens MP breaks down over housing Says he has friends evicted over rent READ MORE: Anthony Albanese's nemesis issues fresh ultimatum By DAVID SOUTHWELL FOR DAILY MAIL AUSTRALIA Published: 23:23, 25 November 2024 | Updated: 23:28, 25 November 2024 e-mail View comments Greens MP Max Chandler-Mather became emotional as he spoke about how the housing crisis is impacting his generation after being accused of 'letting down young voters' by capitulating to Labor. Mr Chandler-Mather, 32, was questioned by interviewer Sarah Ferguson on Monday night's episode of ABC's 7.30 Report about whether the Greens, by agreeing to pass two Labor housing bills, had failed the party's base of younger voters. 'Everyday we don't solve the housing crisis I feel like I have let them down a little bit,' an emotional Mr Chandler-Mather said. 'My generation for the first time are probably going to be worse off than our parents. I feel that acutely.' Mr Chandler-Mather's voice wavered as revealed he had 'friends who have been kicked out of their homes because they can't afford the rent or have given up on ever being able to buy a home'. 'And it hurts me a lot, actually, to see that. I find it really hard,' he said. The Greens delayed the Albanese government’s Help to Buy and Build-to-Rent bills for months, pushing for changes to property investor tax concessions and rent rise caps. However, they ultimately supported the bills despite these demands not being met. Greens MP Max Chandler-Mather grew emotional talking about his generation's housing prospects. Ferguson pressed Mr Chandler-Mather, who is the Greens spokesperson on housing, whether the minor party had dropped the demands because they feared electoral backlash for not supporting the Bills. Mr Chandler-Mather, who has been a consistent thorn in Mr Albanese's side, denied this. 'There comes a point when you realise you have pushed as hard as you can,' he said. 'What we have decided is to pass these two Bills and take this fight to the next election.' Although the Greens secured no concessions, Mr Chandler-Mahler said they pressured Labor into questioning negative gearing, the tax break housing investors get for rental properties that many argue dries up homes for first-time buyers. 'We also got close on negative gearing they costed that policy and that would have been the most positive genuine shift of housing policy in generations in Australia,' he said. Mr Chandler-Mather has proven a thorn in the side of the Prime Minister Anthony Albanese Read More Anthony Albanese was riding high - then a single taunt about his $115,000 investment property portfolio got under his skin... Housing Minister Clare O'Neil said the two Bills 'have now got a really clear passage through the parliament'. 'I'm glad (the Greens) have finally seen the light,' she said on Monday. 'But it doesn't excuse the fact that they have played politics on housing for two-and-a-half years, and the net effect of the Greens in this term of parliament is to delay action on housing.' The proposed Help to Buy scheme would see the government to contribute 30 per cent of the purchase price of a home or 40 per cent for a new build for those earning under $90,000 for a single applicant or $120,000 for a couple. The government share reduces the cost for the homebuyer, although it must be paid back upon sale. Under the Build to Rent bill tax concessions would encourage the constructing properties for rent. Last year the Greens were able to secure an extra $3 billion of investment for social housing in negotiations for the Housing Australia Future Fund. 48 hours in Brighton: No. 124 by Guesthouse, Burnt Orange and EmbersPresident Bola Tinubu is committed to ending insecurity in Nigeria, particularly in the South-East and Cross River State, the Minister of Defence, Dr Badaru Abubakar, stated on Thursday. Speaking in Enugu, Abubakar praised the administration’s progress in combating insecurity nationwide, especially in the Southeast and Cross River State, over the past year. He emphasised Tinubu’s renewed determination to eliminate all forms of insecurity, building on the successes achieved so far. This commitment aligns with Tinubu’s Independence Day address, where he highlighted his administration’s efforts to restore peace and stability in the country. The President noted that his administration has eliminated over 300 Boko Haram and bandit commanders and restored peace to hundreds of communities in the North. He also promised to address the root causes of insecurity, including poverty and unemployment. He said, “There is a renewed determination to do more in the fight against all forms of insecurity including the agitations for Biafra by President Tinubu. “President Tinubu has directed me to come and engage with you to find a lasting solution to insecurity. “Without security, there would be no peace and development. I know that people in this zone are predominantly businessmen and women who need security and peace for their businesses to flourish. “We need to get candid suggestions and information on how we will practically do more and enthrone lasting security and peace in the South-East and Cross River State axis of the country. “If insecurity persists, it should be known that it is our people whose lives and property are being threatened and destroyed; it is our people that are kidnapped and organs harvested as well.” Related News Nigeria’ll continue to prioritise social investment, says Tinubu ACF suspends chairman for criticising Tinubu’s policies Reps urge deployment of security forces to Edo communities The minister said that the Federal Government and security agencies needed the cooperation of all residents especially the leaders as it involves getting actionable intelligence to stem insecurity from its roots in the zone. He appreciated heads of security agencies and leaders of the zone and Cross River State who made the sacrifice to attend the engagement; adding, “President Tinubu is appreciative of all your efforts so far and he needs more.” After the engagement, the minister said that the stakeholders had a robust and spirited interaction which was fruitful and implementable to improve the general security of the zone. “There was a robust suggestion on how to deploy technology to tackle insecurity head-on and restore the people’s confidence and safety in the area,” he said. Speaking, Maj.-Gen. John Nwoga (rtd) said that the insecurity in the zone was heightened by activities of social media bloggers, who keep on repeating old videos of gruesome criminal activities to create fear and panic for reasons best known to them. “There is a need for our people to collectively deal with negative press, fake news and misleading videos being circulated within the zone through social media,” Nwoga said. In his remark, the General Officer Commanding 82 Division of the Nigerian Army, Maj.-Gen. Hassan Dada said that the Nigerian Army was putting in place a robust strategy to ensure a safe and seamless yuletide. “Through the Joint Security Task-Force in South-East, code-named ‘Operation UDO KA’, we are going to create a safe and secured environment to enable the usual mass return for Christmas once more this year; even as we have improved security generally,” Dada said. Earlier, the minister visited and held a closed-door meeting with the GOC, Maj.-Gen. Hassan Dada, and Commanders, Principal Officers and Officers at the Division’s Headquarters, Enugu. Abubakar also visited and held a closed-door meeting with the Air Officer Commanding Ground Training Command of the Nigerian Air Force, AVM Usman Abdullahi, and Commanders, Principal Officers and Officers at GTC Command Headquarters, Enugu.

The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) is unhappy with rumours being floated in the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on the choice of the state’s new chief minister, and politics relating to caste equations potentially influencing the selection process. For the RSS, the ideological mentor of the BJP, it’s an open-and-shut case – Devendra Fadnavis, who they say led the Mahayuti alliance to a landslide victory in the recent state elections, is the natural choice for the post. However, in the last few days, a section of the BJP has floated the names of other contenders. Also read: Maharashtra oath on Dec 5, Shiv Sena insists on home portfolio The names of Vinod Tawde, Chandrashekhar Bawankule, Chandrakant Patil, and more recently Union Minister of State for Civil Aviation Murlidhar Mohol have been doing the rounds on social media. While Tawde, Patil and Mohol are Marathas, Bawankule is from the OBC category, and their possible candidacy would draw caste considerations into the narrative. The Maratha and OBC communities have played a significant role in the run-up to the assembly elections, and supporters of this quartet believe this should be taken into account when the BJP chooses the new CM. This has upset the Sangh Parivar, which campaigned hard for Fadnavis, a Brahmin, during the elections. With a systematic micro-planning strategy, Fadnavis and the RSS machinery, armed with 3,000 swayamsevaks, toured every district in the state, to ensure the phenomenal victory for the Mahayuti coalition. Also read: ‘New Maharashtra CM from BJP, Mahayuti allies to get 2 deputy CM posts’: Ajit Pawar A senior RSS leader, affiliated to the Rashtriya Muslim Manch, an RSS frontal organisation, said the RSS has communicated to the BJP leadership that given Fadnavis’s pivotal role in the Mahayuti’s win, he should be the natural choice for the CM’s post. Not selecting him could also adversely affect the party in the upcoming municipal elections, particularly in Mumbai. The RSS is disappointed that the four leaders, who have been groomed by the Sangh, are not toeing the RSS line. The Sangh points out that both Ajit Pawar and Eknath Shinde, who have been offered the posts of dual deputy chief ministers, are Marathas. There is no reason for a section of BJP politicians to insist on a Maratha CM, argues the RSS. Also read: Meet Atul Limaye: RSS strategist who engineered Mahayuti's landslide victory A senior RSS activist said that when this issue was raised with the party high command, Mohol was forced to clarify that his candidacy for CM’s post was no more than an idle rumour. In a social media post, Mohol said, “Our party is disciplined, and the party’s decision is final. Such significant decisions are made unanimously by the parliamentary board, not through social media discussions.”Advertising Time Trace (ATT), A Web3.0 Revolution In Digital Advertising, Listed On Bitmart Exchange

VANCOUVER, British Columbia, Dec. 10, 2024 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- American Lithium Corp. (“American Lithium” or the “Company”) (TSX-V:LI | Nasdaq:AMLI | Frankfurt:5LA1) is announcing that its Board of Directors has approved the voluntary delisting of its common shares (“American Lithium Shares”) from the Nasdaq Capital Market (“Nasdaq”) and the deregistration with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (the “SEC”). American Lithium has notified Nasdaq of its intention to voluntarily delist the American Lithium Shares. The Company currently anticipates that it will file with the SEC a Form 25, Notification of Removal of Listing and/or Registration under Section 12(b) of the Securities Exchange Act of 1934, as amended (the “Exchange Act”), relating to the delisting and deregistration on or about December 20, 2024, with the delisting of American Lithium Shares taking effect ten calendar days thereafter. The Company expects that its reporting obligations will be suspended upon filing of the Form 25. The Board of Directors of the Company believes that the decision to delist the American Lithium Shares from Nasdaq and to terminate its reporting obligations under the Exchange Act is in the best interest of the Company and its shareholders. The Board has determined that the burdens associated with operating as a company listed on the Nasdaq outweigh any advantages to the Company and its shareholders at this time. The Board’s decision was based on careful review of numerous factors, including the following: the ongoing direct and indirect costs of Exchange Act compliance and maintaining a continued listing of the American Lithium Shares on Nasdaq, including director and officer insurance premiums, audit fees, legal fees and regulatory fees, and the disproportionate impact of the foregoing costs on the Company’s results of operations; the significant burden on Management involved in the preparation of the Company’s public reports, shorter public reporting deadlines in Canada, and compliance with accounting and other requirements of the Exchange Act; the limited benefits to the Company and its unaffiliated shareholders from the Company’s status as a SEC reporting issuer in light of, among other things, the fact that due to market conditions, the low share price, market capitalization, lack of institutional interest and liquidity in the United States for the American Lithium Shares; the Company is not currently in a position to use its public Company status to issue meaningful amounts of equity securities in the United States or make acquisitions due to market conditions; and the opposition by many large shareholders to a share capital consolidation. American Lithium reserves the right, for any reason, to delay any of the filings described above, to withdraw them prior to effectiveness, and to otherwise change its plans in respect of delisting and deregistration and termination of its reporting obligations under applicable U.S. federal securities laws in any way. Completion of any listing on the OTCQX Markets remains subject to the satisfaction of customary listing conditions and regulatory approval, and there can be no assurance that the American Lithium Shares will be listed for trading on the OTCQX Markets. Ab out American Lithium American Lithium is developing two of the world’s largest, advanced-stage lithium projects, along with the largest undeveloped uranium project in Latin America. Investors should not place undue reliance on forward-looking statements. Cautionary Note Regarding 32 Concessions Thirty-two of the one-hundred-seventy-four concessions comprising the Falchani and Macusani Projects are currently subject to Administrative and Judicial processes in Peru to overturn resolutions issued by INGEMMET and the Mining Council of MINEM in February 2019 and July 2019, respectively, which declared title to thirty-two concessions invalid due to late receipt of the annual validity payments. On November 2, 2021, American Lithium was awarded a favorable ruling in regard to title to the concessions, but on November 26, 2021, appeals of the judicial ruling were lodged by INGEMMET and MINEM. A three-judge tribunal of Peru’s Superior Court unanimously upheld the ruling in a decision reported in November 2023. American Lithium was subsequently notified that INGEMMET and MINEM have filed petitions to the Supreme Court of Peru to assume jurisdiction in the proceedings. Given the precedent of the original ruling it is hoped that the Supreme Court will not assume jurisdiction; however, there is no assurance of the outcome at this time.

In 2023, East Central University announced the launch of a campaign that would see the construction of a new STEM Center on the ECU campus that would also house the ECU Nursing Program. The groundbreaking for this new state-of-the-art facility was over the summer with representatives from the State of Oklahoma, City of Ada, Valley View Foundation and Chickasaw Nation in attendance. ECU is pleased to announce that this newest addition to the university’s campus will be named in honor of Chickasaw citizen Dan Hays. “We are pleased East Central University is honoring Chickasaw citizen Dan Hays, whose generosity and vision of the future has had a powerful impact on education throughout the Ada area, the Chickasaw Nation and beyond,” said Chickasaw Nation Governor Bill Anoatubby. “It is fitting that ECU’s new STEM center should bear the Hays name as a tribute and testament to his commitment to lifelong learning and education.” Hays, who possessed an allotment of 320 acres of land across what is now Ada, recognized the significance of establishing what was then named East Central State Normal School in the region. Following approval for the normal school by Gov. Charles N. Haskell in 1909, Hays quickly stepped forward to donate 16 acres of his land, his only stipulation being that he be allowed to remain in his home, which was also located on the 16-acre allotment. The chosen acreage, allotted by Hays, allowed for ECU’s first building, Science Hall, to be constructed at the end of Ada’s Main Street. An article featured in the May 6, 1909, edition of the Ada Evening News reported by Col. E.H. Lucas stated, “The acceptance of the proposed site will mean that the normal school would be located in that magnificent location, avenue style, at the end of East Main Street. From this point, the view could not be more excellent. To stand in the center of the business section of Main Street and look at the point proposed for the location on the east side must bring from anyone an involuntary expression of approval, for it is the prettiest site I ever saw.” Construction quickly began and the students of East Central Normal School were blessed to begin their second year of classes in their very own building by the fall semester of 1910, thanks to the generous donation of Dan Hays. In honor of Hays significant contribution and the longstanding relationship that it helped forge between ECU and the Chickasaw Nation, ECU President Wendell Godwin has announced that the university’s newest addition will be named in honor of Hays himself. “We are proud to embrace the Native American legacy on our campus, and this is an excellent way to memorialize the original gift from the Hays family,” said Godwin. “The Chickasaw Nation has been a driving force in the region’s educational successes for decades. East Central University is excited to highlight the native theme and décor that will be illustrated throughout the Dan Hays STEM Center to further demonstrate our appreciation. Our community is excited to watch the construction over the next 18 months.” Among the highlights of this two-floor facility is a simulation center, more than 25 hands-on learning labs and STEM classrooms equipped with the latest technology to benefit both STEM and Nursing students. The construction of this new building and the expansion of the nursing program are expected to generate a 200% increase in nursing graduates from ECU. Historically, 84% of nursing graduates stay in Oklahoma five years after graduation and 75% of students are accepted into medical school. Nursing, Math and Computer Science are some of the university’s largest and fastest-growing degree programs. The average pass rate for the ECU School of Nursing on the registered nurses NCLEX (National Council Licensure Examination) is 97% while the national average is 82%. This expansion will allow ECU to recruit a number of new staff and faculty as well as more than 200 new nursing students to the university and community. The new facility will serve to reaffirm ECU’s commitment to educating students and transforming students’ lives for generations to come.NORTHWESTERN STATE 71, NORTH ALABAMA 58‘Bigg Boss 18’: Salman Khan talks about old ‘arrogant’ police station video

The Kansas City Chiefs pulled off another nail-biter, defeating the Carolina Panthers 30-27 Sunday afternoon. The Chiefs’ new kicker Spencer Shrader with his big moment yet as a Chiefs, came through on the 31-yard field goal that sealed Kansas City’s victory as time expired, pushing Kansas City to a 10-1 record on the season. Despite struggles all day on defense, the Chiefs offense were the ones for a change that carried much of the load in the game. Led by Patrick Mahomes late-game heroics, which included a key 32-yard pass that set up the game-winning field goal. Kansas City had relative ease getting whatever they wanted on that side of the ball. However, the same thing can be said for Carolina, whose late-game flurry kept the pressure on, but Kansas City proved once again that when it’s crunch time, they, more times than not, will come through and find a way to win. Kansas City Chiefs Take Control Early The game started with a bang for Kansas City as running back Samaje Perine opened with a 56-yard kickoff return to set up the opening drive. Mahomes connected with Noah Gray on a 35-yard touchdown pass, giving the Chiefs a 7-0 lead just 1:25 into the game. That first-quarter touchdown drive was also the first of the season for Mahomes and this Chiefs offense. Then, on the Panthers’ first offense series of the game, they were able to move the ball down the field against the Chiefs’ defense but stalled out in the red zone and had to settle for a 30-yard field goal, which was good, and they got on the board 7-3 with 9:24 left in the first quarter. The Kansas City Chiefs offense slowed down a bit on the next series but managed another score late in the opening quarter. After some impressive red-zone coverage from Carolina, Shrader nailed a 25-yard field goal, extending the lead to 10-3. The Panthers ended the quarter threatening, but the Chiefs’ defense held firm at their 13-yard line. The second quarter began with Carolina being unable to get into the endzone once again and having to settle for another goal opportunity after their eight-play drive stalled. Kansas City responded on the very next drive by getting back on track and went down the field on a 14-play, 92-yard touchdown drive, capped by another Gray reception. Gray now had back-to-back games with at least two touchdowns, which puts him at four touchdowns on the season, a career-high. At halftime, the Chiefs led 20-9, controlling the clock and the momentum. Carolina Panthers Close the Gap Carolina came out firing in the third quarter on their first series of the half, going on a 15-play, 70-yard drive to score their first touchdown of the day. Bryce Young found wide receiver David Moore on a 1-yard pass, narrowing Kansas City’s lead to 20-16 with 6:26 remaining in the third quarter. Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs responded in signature fashion. A 10-play, 75-yard drive culminated in a 3-yard touchdown pass to DeAndre Hopkins, pushing the score to 27-16. Patrick Mahomes recorded his second straight game with at least three passing touchdowns , and the Chiefs offense continues to stay in rhythm. The Chiefs’ defense, on the other hand, a defense known for its bend but don’t break mentality began to show cracks, allowing consistent big gains by the Panthers. Despite the struggles, the Chiefs managed to entered the fourth quarter with an 11-point advantage. Late Drama and a Walk-Off Win Then Carolina struck early in the fourth quarter, converting a 33-yard field goal to make it a one-score game at 27-19. Then the Kansas Chiefs punted for the first time of the day, but their defense stepped up and forced a quick three-and-out, giving Mahomes a chance to ice the game. However, penalties and poor execution forced another punt on the offense, setting the stage for the Panthers to tie the game and force overtime. With just over three minutes remaining, the Panthers capitalized on a short field and drove right down it in five plays to score a touchdown. The two-point attempt was also successful, and the game was tied up at 27-27 with 1:46 left on the clock in the fourth quarter. Then Patrick Mahomes did what he’s done for years since he’s been with the Chiefs. Mahomes put on his cape, and came through in the clutch, leading the Chiefs into field goal range with a 32-yard run, setting up Shrader for the game-winning field goal try . The rookie kicker delivered, hitting the game-winning 31-yard field goal as time expired. Final Thoughts Although the Kansas City’s Chiefs have shown improvement offensively, scoring 30 points for just the second time this season. Their defense has become a point of concern. This is now the second consecutive game, where they give up at least 27 points to an opponent. Yet, a win is a win because no matter the opponent there are no gimmes in the NFL, and the Chiefs found a way to get back into the win column. Up next, they will host divisional rivals Las Vegas Raiders back on Black Friday, as they look to clean up some things on both sides of the ball and move ever closer to locking up the division and No. 1 seed in the AFC. Relief, defiance, anger: Families and advocates react to Biden's death row commutationsSurgery Partners, Inc. (NASDAQ:SGRY) Given Average Rating of “Moderate Buy” by AnalystsPHILADELPHIA (AP) — Jalen Hurts remained in the NFL's concussion protocol on Monday, limiting his ability to practice this week for the Philadelphia Eagles and casting doubt on his availability for Sunday's game against Dallas. If Hurts can't play, the Eagles would turn to backup Kenny Pickett — who suffered a rib injury and couldn't protect a big lead in a 36-33 loss to Washington — with third-stringer Tanner McKee on deck. The Eagles (12-3) need to win one more game over the final two to clinch an NFC East title and one of the conference's top two seeds. Coach Nick Sirianni gave no additional health update on Hurts but did say the QB who led the Eagles to 10 straight wins before he was forced out with the head injury wouldn't need much time this week to get ready against the Cowboys, if he was cleared. “Jalen knows how to prepare,” Sirianni said. “He knows how to get himself ready. He's a true pro." The Eagles are 9 1/2-point favorites over the division rival Cowboys (7-8), per BetMGM Sportsbook. Sirianni said the Eagles would lean on the medical staff on a daily basis to know where Hurts — who threw two touchdown passes and ran for a pair of scores in the first meeting against Dallas in November — was in his recovery from the head injury. Hurts was ruled out early at Washington after his head slammed against the ground on one run and he was hit in the helmet by Commanders linebacker Frankie Luvu at the end of another. “He's always done a good job of protecting himself both as a passer and a runner,” Sirianni said. “Any time you lose one of your best players, you wish they'd do something else or not take that hit." Hurts shook off a sluggish start over the first four games and has thrown 18 touchdowns against just five interceptions to turn the Eagles into Super Bowl contenders. “Every time there's a player out,” Sirianni said, “there's an adjustment to be made.” Saquon Barkley and the running game. Barkley was held to 41 yards after the first quarter but 150 yards is 150 yards and he still has a shot at NFL history. Barkley leads the NFL with 1,838 yards rushing and is 268 yards away from passing Eric Dickerson and his 2,105 yards for the Los Angeles Rams in 1984 for the season mark. Barkley is 162 yards shy of becoming the ninth player in NFL history with 2,000 yards rushing in a season. Backup QB. Pickett was 14 of 24 for 143 yards in relief, throwing a touchdown pass to A.J. Brown and an interception. Pickett played his first meaningful football in a year. The Eagles use McKee as the emergency QB, but the sixth-round pick in the 2023 draft could be in the mix if Hurts sat out against Dallas. Pickett is from New Jersey and said when he was acquired from Pittsburgh that he had “great memories” of going to games at Lincoln Financial Field with his dad and grandfather since he was 5. The chance to run out of the home team tunnel — which he could get Sunday if he's the starting QB — left him absolutely delighted. Pickett, a first-round pick out of Pitt in 2022, went 14-10 as a starter for the Steelers. “I was impressed by Pickett, honestly," Washington coach Dan Quinn said Monday. "I thought he threw the ball with good accuracy to the right spots. He’s a nice athlete (who can) move, so I can see why they would want him in that system. I thought he got outside and had good scramble ability. Wasn’t surprised they didn’t run the sneaks to go through that.” Zack Baun. The linebacker barely caused a ripple on the transactions wire in March but has been arguably the MVP of the defense. He forced a fumble in the third quarter that set up a score, one of five turnovers for the Eagles. He also had two tackles for losses. The No. 1 seed. The Eagles all but cost themselves a shot at the top spot in the NFC and a bye with the late-game collapse in Washington. The Eagles will clinch the division with a victory over the Cowboys or Giants and most likely will finish with the No. 2 seed. They are one game behind both the Detroit Lions (13-2) and the Minnesota Vikings (13-2) in the NFC standings. Eagles fans can still chant, “We're No. 1!” but it's a long shot. To clinch the No. 1 seed, the Eagles need to beat Dallas and the Giants. And the Lions need to lose their last two games against San Francisco (6-9) and Minnesota. And the Vikings needs to lose to Green Bay (10-4) and beat the Lions in Week 18. Should the status quo remain, the Eagles would host Washington in a playoff game. Beyond Hurts, edge rusher Josh Sweat left with an ankle injury and defensive tackle Jordan Davis limped off in the second quarter. ... Pickett said he had his ribs X-rayed and would undergo further testing. Sirianni had no update Monday on Pickett's condition. 1,000 — Brown became the first Eagles receiver to top 1,000 yards in three straight seasons since Mike Quick from 1983-85. The Eagles can clinch the division and a home playoff game with two lightweights left on the schedule, both at home. The Eagles play Dallas on Sunday in a game bumped to a 1 p.m. kickoff and end the season against the New York Giants. AP NFL: https://apnews.com/hub/nfl

The race to decarbonise is hotting up. So too are the commercial opportunities. Flex Power Solutions, a Limerick start-up, is helping to solve one of the thorniest challenges facing the country: how to electrify industrial heating. The company’s technology will decarbonise heat on industrial sites through flexible and affordable electrification, using electrode boilers that convert excess renewable electricity into useful heat. • Households to face €10 extra annual bill over 40 years for new electricity grid By using Flex Power boilers at the right time, clients can achieve a 30 per cent carbon reduction, the company reckons, while also saving money. The boilers also help EirGrid , the grid operator, to minimise “dispatch down” of wind turbines — that is, times when power is produced but cannot be used.Indonesia’s Prabowo seeks UAE cooperation in industrialization effortsBy JILL COLVIN and STEPHEN GROVES WASHINGTON (AP) — After several weeks working mostly behind closed doors, Vice President-elect JD Vance returned to Capitol Hill this week in a new, more visible role: Helping Donald Trump try to get his most contentious Cabinet picks to confirmation in the Senate, where Vance has served for the last two years. Vance arrived at the Capitol on Wednesday with former Rep. Matt Gaetz and spent the morning sitting in on meetings between Trump’s choice for attorney general and key Republicans, including members of the Senate Judiciary Committee. The effort was for naught: Gaetz announced a day later that he was withdrawing his name amid scrutiny over sex trafficking allegations and the reality that he was unlikely to be confirmed. Thursday morning Vance was back, this time accompanying Pete Hegseth, the “Fox & Friends Weekend” host whom Trump has tapped to be the next secretary of defense. Hegseth also has faced allegations of sexual assault that he denies. Vance is expected to accompany other nominees for meetings in coming weeks as he tries to leverage the two years he has spent in the Senate to help push through Trump’s picks. Matt Gaetz, R-Fla., at the Capitol in Washington, Wednesday, Nov. 20, 2024. (AP Photo/J. Scott Applewhite) Vance is taking on an atypical role as Senate guide for Trump nominees The role of introducing nominees around Capitol Hill is an unusual one for a vice president-elect. Usually the job goes to a former senator who has close relationships on the Hill, or a more junior aide. But this time the role fits Vance, said Marc Short, who served as Trump’s first director of legislative affairs as well as chief of staff to Trump’s first vice president, Mike Pence, who spent more than a decade in Congress and led the former president’s transition ahead of his first term. ”JD probably has a lot of current allies in the Senate and so it makes sense to have him utilized in that capacity,” Short said. Unlike the first Trump transition, which played out before cameras at Trump Tower in New York and at the president-elect’s golf club in Bedminster, New Jersey, this one has largely happened behind closed doors in Palm Beach, Florida. There, a small group of officials and aides meet daily at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort to run through possible contenders and interview job candidates. The group includes Elon Musk, the billionaire who has spent so much time at the club that Trump has joked he can’t get rid of him. Vance has been a constant presence, even as he’s kept a lower profile. The Ohio senator has spent much of the last two weeks in Palm Beach, according to people familiar with his plans, playing an active role in the transition, on which he serves as honorary chair. Mar-a-Lago scene is a far cry from Vance’s hardscrabble upbringing Vance has been staying at a cottage on the property of the gilded club, where rooms are adorned with cherubs, oriental rugs and intricate golden inlays. It’s a world away from the famously hardscrabble upbringing that Vance documented in the memoir that made him famous, “Hillbilly Elegy.” His young children have also joined him at Mar-a-Lago, at times. Vance was photographed in shorts and a polo shirt playing with his kids on the seawall of the property with a large palm frond, a U.S. Secret Service robotic security dog in the distance. On the rare days when he is not in Palm Beach, Vance has been joining the sessions remotely via Zoom. Though he has taken a break from TV interviews after months of constant appearances, Vance has been active in the meetings, which began immediately after the election and include interviews and as well as presentations on candidates’ pluses and minuses. Among those interviewed: Contenders to replace FBI Director Christopher Wray , as Vance wrote in a since-deleted social media post. Defending himself from criticism that he’d missed a Senate vote in which one of President Joe Biden’s judicial nominees was confirmed, Vance wrote that he was meeting at the time “with President Trump to interview multiple positions for our government, including for FBI Director.” “I tend to think it’s more important to get an FBI director who will dismantle the deep state than it is for Republicans to lose a vote 49-46 rather than 49-45,” Vance added on X. “But that’s just me.” Vance is making his voice heard as Trump stocks his Cabinet While Vance did not come in to the transition with a list of people he wanted to see in specific roles, he and his friend, Trump’s eldest son, Donald Trump Jr., who is also a member of the transition team, were eager to see former Democratic Rep. Tulsi Gabbard and Robert F. Kennedy Jr. find roles in the administration. Trump ended up selecting Gabbard as the next director of national intelligence , a powerful position that sits atop the nation’s spy agencies and acts as the president’s top intelligence adviser. And he chose Kennedy to lead the Department of Health and Human Services , a massive agency that oversees everything from drug and food safety to Medicare and Medicaid. Vance was also a big booster of Tom Homan, the former acting director of Immigration and Customs Enforcement, who will serve as Trump’s “border czar.” In another sign of Vance’s influence, James Braid, a top aide to the senator, is expected to serve as Trump’s legislative affairs director. Allies say it’s too early to discuss what portfolio Vance might take on in the White House. While he gravitates to issues like trade, immigration and tech policy, Vance sees his role as doing whatever Trump needs. Vance was spotted days after the election giving his son’s Boy Scout troop a tour of the Capitol and was there the day of leadership elections. He returned in earnest this week, first with Gaetz — arguably Trump’s most divisive pick — and then Hegseth, who has was been accused of sexually assaulting a woman in 2017, according to an investigative report made public this week. Hegseth told police at the time that the encounter had been consensual and denied any wrongdoing. Vance hosted Hegseth in his Senate office as GOP senators, including those who sit on the Senate Armed Services Committee, filtered in to meet with the nominee for defense secretary. While a president’s nominees usually visit individual senators’ offices, meeting them on their own turf, the freshman senator — who is accompanied everywhere by a large Secret Service detail that makes moving around more unwieldy — instead brought Gaetz to a room in the Capitol on Wednesday and Hegseth to his office on Thursday. Senators came to them. Vance made it to votes Wednesday and Thursday, but missed others on Thursday afternoon. Vance will draw on his Senate background going forward Vance is expected to continue to leverage his relationships in the Senate after Trump takes office. But many Republicans there have longer relationships with Trump himself. Sen. Kevin Cramer, a North Dakota Republican, said that Trump was often the first person to call him back when he was trying to reach high-level White House officials during Trump’s first term. “He has the most active Rolodex of just about anybody I’ve ever known,” Cramer said, adding that Vance would make a good addition. “They’ll divide names up by who has the most persuasion here,” Cramer said, but added, “Whoever his liaison is will not work as hard at it as he will.” Cramer was complimentary of the Ohio senator, saying he was “pleasant” and ” interesting” to be around. ′′He doesn’t have the long relationships,” he said. “But we all like people that have done what we’ve done. I mean, that’s sort of a natural kinship, just probably not as personally tied.” Under the Constitution, Vance will also have a role presiding over the Senate and breaking tie votes. But he’s not likely to be needed for that as often as was Kamala Harris, who broke a record number of ties for Democrats as vice president, since Republicans will have a bigger cushion in the chamber next year. Colvin reported from New York. Associated Press writer Mary Clare Jalonick contributed to this report.NEW YORK, Nov 24 — The FBI has warned the NBA that many recent home burglaries targeting professional athletes and high net worth individuals may be connected to sophisticated, transnational theft rings, the league said in a memo obtained by Reuters on Friday. Two players in the NBA had their homes broken into in recent weeks, according to media reports, along with the NFL’s twice MVP Patrick Mahomes and his Kansas City Chiefs teammate Travis Kelce, who is dating pop superstar Taylor Swift. The memo, which the NBA directed to teams across the league, advised that players should install updated security systems and utilise protective guard services when they are away from home for extended periods of time. “NBA Security received a briefing from the Federal Bureau of Investigation (‘FBI’) that connected many of the home burglaries to transnational South American Theft Groups (‘SATGs’),” the memo read. “These SATGs are reportedly well-organised, sophisticated rings that incorporate advanced techniques and technologies, including pre-surveillance, drones, and signal jamming devices.” The FBI said that the homes that were broken into were all unoccupied and, in most cases, were equipped with alarm systems that had not been activated, according to the memo. The FBI did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The memo is similar in nature to a document that the NFL sent this week, in which the league advised players to ramp up home security. Around-the-clock media reports and team schedules make it easy to know when players are on the road for extended periods of time and the NFL urged players to exercise caution in what they post to social media. The NFL said that surveillance tactics included attempted home deliveries and individuals posing as joggers or home maintenance workers. — Reuters

By Kemberley Washington, CPA, Bankrate.com The IRS Direct File program, which lets taxpayers file their federal income tax return directly with the IRS for free, is doubling its reach to 24 states for the 2025 tax season, up from 12 states in 2024, the program’s pilot year. The Direct File program will also accept more types of tax situations for the 2025 tax season. While taxpayers who used the system in 2024 could claim a handful of tax credits, including the earned income tax credit and the child tax credit , that list is expanding in 2025 to include the child and dependent care credit , among others. An estimated 30 million taxpayers will qualify for the Direct File program in 2025, the IRS says. More than 140,000 taxpayers filed their federal tax returns through the Direct File program in 2024. About 90% of users said their experience was excellent or above average, according to a survey of about 11,000 Direct File users in 2024, conducted by the General Services Administration. “We’re excited about the improvements to Direct File and the millions more taxpayers who will be eligible to use the service this year,” said Danny Werfel, the IRS commissioner, in a statement. “Our goal is to improve the experience of tax filing itself and help taxpayers meet their obligations quickly and easily.” The IRS says that taxpayers can use Direct File when the 2025 tax season kicks off in January, and it will be available until Oct. 15, 2025. But the program’s future is somewhat unclear: In December, 29 Republican lawmakers sent a letter to President-elect Donald Trump, calling for him to end the Direct File program on his first day in office. Lawmakers in the U.S. House of Representatives also introduced legislation in July to end the Direct File program. For now, here’s what you need to know about how the IRS Direct File program works, and how to qualify for it. The Direct File program is a new initiative, about to enter its second year, that allows taxpayers to file their federal tax returns electronically with the IRS. The no-cost tool guides taxpayers through every part of their federal income tax return. Taxpayers can file using a smartphone, computer or tablet. One of the program’s advantages is that, if you have questions as you’re working on your return, you can get live support directly from the IRS via chat or phone. IRS representatives can answer basic tax questions and help with technical issues in English and Spanish. The Direct File program has income limits, as well as limits on the types of income, deductions and credits you can enter on your tax return. For the 2025 tax season: To be eligible for Direct File, your income can come from the following sources: But if you’re self-employed, or have business or rental income, you can’t use Direct File . Same goes for IRA contributions or distributions: If you have either, you can’t use Direct File. You can use the IRS Direct File program only if you claim the standard deduction — the program isn’t available to people who itemize. But you can claim certain above-the-line deductions: student loan interest , educator expenses and health savings account contributions . You can’t use Direct File if you want to deduct your IRA contributions. The Direct File program allows for the following tax credits in 2025: However, if you want to claim education credits , credits for energy efficient home upgrades or the adoption expense credit , you can’t use the Direct File program. More taxpayers will have access to the IRS Direct File program in 2025. In 2024, the IRS kicked off the program with only 12 states; that number has expanded to 24 states for the 2025 tax season. For some of the states that participate in the IRS Direct File program, your federal return information will be transferred automatically to the state tax website, but in some cases you’ll have to re-enter your information. Visit this IRS Direct File page to get the details for your state. Here is a list of the participating states: If you don’t qualify for the IRS Direct File program, you may have other options to file your tax return for free. In addition to Direct File, the IRS offers the Free File program, in which it partners with online tax software providers to provide free federal income tax return filing. Some providers also allow you to file a state income tax return. For the 2024 tax season, your adjusted gross income had to be less than $79,000 to qualify for the Free File program. That dollar threshold is likely to rise slightly for the 2025 tax season. The IRS also offers the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program, which provides certified volunteers to prepare basic tax returns if you earn less than $67,000 a year, are disabled, or speak limited English. Catherine McKenney announced as Ontario NDP candidate in Ottawa-CentreMembers of Donald Trump's presidential transition team are laying the groundwork for the United States to withdraw from the World Health Organization on the first day of his second term, according to a health law expert familiar with the discussions. "I have it on good authority that he plans to withdraw, probably on day one or very early in his administration," said Lawrence Gostin, professor of global health at Georgetown University in Washington and director of the WHO Collaborating Center on National and Global Health Law. The Financial Times was first to report on the plans, citing two experts. The second expert, former White House COVID-19 response coordinator Ashish Jha, was not immediately available for comment.

Chandigarh: Struggling with internal rift and leadership crisis in Punjab, the BJP not only lost the security deposit of its candidates in the bypoll on three out of the four assembly constituencies, but also performed worse than parliamentary elections in June this year. Like the Lok Sabha elections, the Sunil Jakhar-led Punjab BJP again failed to win even a single seat in the bypolls. The saffron party just succeeded in getting 10.6% votes in the bypoll. Except Dera Baba Nanak assembly segment, BJP’s vote share has fallen in all other three constituencies this time as compared to the Lok Sabha elections. Though BJP could not win even a single seat in the parliamentary elections out of the total 13 contested in Punjab, its morale was high as it had improved its vote share from 9.63% in 2019 to 18.56%. The saffron party was then claiming to be emerging as a formidable force for the 2027 vidhan sabha election in Punjab. Those who lost their security deposit included former finance minister Manpreet Singh Badal from Gidderbaha (12,227 votes), former cabinet minister Sohan Singh Thandal from Chabbewal (8,692 votes) and Ravi Karan Singh Kahlon from Dera Baba Nanak (6,505 votes). After failing to win even a single seat in the Lok Sabha polls, Punjab BJP president Jakhar had already conveyed his decision earlier to the BJP top brass, including national president JP Nadda, to relieve him from the state party president’s post and hand over the responsibility to some other leader. But the BJP high command had asked him to continue to look after the party’s affairs in the state. Jakhar had even stopped attending party’s meetings after the Lok Sabha elections. We also published the following articles recently How BJP bounced back from Lok Sabha setback to achieve historic election wins After facing a setback in the Lok Sabha elections, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has made a remarkable comeback with victories in Haryana and Maharashtra assembly elections. By shifting focus from a Modi-centric campaign to highlighting state leadership and development initiatives, the BJP successfully resonated with local voters. Punjab election result: Congress' Kuldeep Singh Dhillon wins Barnala bypoll Congress candidate Kuldeep Singh Dhillon won the Barnala assembly seat in the Punjab byelection, defeating AAP's Harinder Singh Dhaliwal by a margin of 2,147 votes. The bypolls, held on November 20, were necessitated by the election of the incumbent MLAs to the Lok Sabha. BJP Goes All Out in Vidarbha: Lessons Learned from Lok Sabha Setbacks Following a disappointing performance in the Lok Sabha elections, the BJP implemented a robust strategy in the Maharashtra assembly elections to regain its stronghold in Vidarbha. The party employed technology-driven voter outreach, strengthened its organizational presence, and actively mobilized its grassroots base.

BARCELONA, Spain (AP) — Tens of thousands of Spaniards marched in downtown Barcelona on Saturday to protest the skyrocketing cost of renting an apartment in the popular tourist destination. Protesters cut off traffic on main avenues in the city center, holding up homemade signs in Spanish reading “Fewer apartments for investing and more homes for living" and “The people without homes uphold their rights.” The lack of affordable housing has become one of the leading concerns for the southern European Union country, mirroring the housing crunch across many parts of the world, including the United States . Organizers said that over 100,000 had turned out, while Barcelona’s police said they estimated some 22,000 marched. Either way, the throngs of people clogging the streets recalled the massive separatist rallies at the heigh of the previous decade’s Catalan independence movement. Now, social concerns led by housing have displaced political crusades. That is because the average rent for Spain has doubled in last 10 years. The price per square meter has risen from 7.2 euros ($7.5) in 2014 to 13 euros this year, according to the popular online real estate website Idealista. The growth is even more acute in cities like Barcelona and Madrid. Incomes meanwhile have failed to keep up, especially for younger people in a country with chronically high unemployment. Protestor Samuel Saintot said he is “frustrated and scared” after being told by the owners of the apartment he has rented for the past 15 years in Barcelona’s city center that he must vacate the premises. He suspects that the owners want him out so they can renovate it and boost the price. “Even looking in a 20- or 30-kilometer radius outside town, I can’t even find anything within the price range I can afford,” he told The Associated Press. “And I consider myself a very fortunate person, because I earn a decent salary. And even in my case, I may be forced to leave town.” A report by the Bank of Spain indicates that nearly 40% of Spaniards who rent dedicate an average of 40% of their income to paying rents and utilities, compared to the European Union average of 27% of renters who do so. “We are talking about a housing emergency. It means people having many difficulties both in accessing and staying in their homes,” said Ignasi Martí, professor for Esade business school and head of its Dignified Housing Observatory. The rise in rents is causing significant pain in Spain, where traditionally people seek to own their homes. Rental prices have also been driven up by short-term renters including tourists. Many migrants to Spain are also disproportionately hit by the high rents because they often do not have enough savings. Spain is near the bottom end of OECD countries with under 2% of all housing available being public housing for rent. The OECD average is 7%. Spain is far behind France, with 14%, Britain with 16%, and the Netherlands with 34%. Carme Arcarazo, spokesperson for Barcelona’s Tenants Union which helped organize the protest, said that renters should consider a “rent strike” and cease paying their monthly rents in a mass protest movement. “I think we the tenants have understood that this depends on us. That we can’t keep asking and making demands to the authorities and waiting for an answer. We must take the reins of the situation,” Arcarazo told the AP. “So, if they (the owners) won’t lower the rent, then we will force them to do it." The Barcelona protest came a month after tens of thousands rallied against high rents in Madrid. The rising discontent over housing is putting pressure on Spain’s governing Socialist party, which leads a coalition on the national level and is in charge of Catalonia’s regional government and Barcelona’s city hall. Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez presided over what the government termed a “housing summit” including government officials and real estate developers last month. But the Barcelona’s Tenants Union boycotted the event, saying it was like calling a summit for curing cancer and inviting tobacco companies to participate. The leading government measure has been a rent cap mechanism that the central government has offered to regional authorities based on a price index established by the housing ministry. Rent controls can be applied to areas deemed to be “highly stressed” by high rental prices. Catalonia was the first region to apply those caps, which are in place in downtown Barcelona. Many locals blame the million of tourists who visit Barcelona, and the rest of Spain, each year for the high prices. Barcelona’s town hall has pledged to completely eliminate the city’s 10,000 so called “tourist apartments,” or dwellings with permits for short-term rents, by 2028.Meister 3-5 1-2 7, Ciezki 9-16 12-13 34, Garzon 2-11 3-3 7, Moore-McNeil 2-8 2-2 7, Parrish 1-2 3-4 5, Striplin 3-8 2-2 8, Bargesser 1-5 3-4 5, LaMendola 0-1 0-0 0, Totals 21-56 26-30 73 Fontleroy 3-7 0-2 7, Littlepage-Buggs 2-7 1-1 5, Vonleh 4-9 3-6 11, Andrews 1-9 0-0 3, Walker 3-16 9-11 15, Abraham 1-1 0-2 2, Bartley 0-0 0-0 0, Felder 6-12 3-4 20, Jennings 1-2 0-0 2, Totals 21-63 16-26 65 3-Point Goals_Indiana 5-17 (Ciezki 4-5, Garzon 0-6, Moore-McNeil 1-4, Parrish 0-1, Striplin 0-1), Baylor 7-23 (Fontleroy 1-4, Andrews 1-7, Walker 0-3, Felder 5-8, Jennings 0-1). Marco Baroni’s Choices Marco Baroni started with a 4-3-3 formational spearheaded by Taty Castellanos, with Pedro and Mattia Zaccagni on the wings. Nicolo Rovella operated as a Regista in between Matteo Guendouzi and Matias Vecino. Matteo Guendouzi Wastes Chance The Biancocelesti had their chances in the first half, with the most significant one coming in the 33rd minute when Castellanos picked up Guendouzi’s run with a clever through ball. The Frenchman tried to take it in his stride, but scuffed his first touch. Tomasso Pobega Sees Red Nevertheless, the former man made amends swiftly afterwards, drawing a foul inside his own box from Tommaso Pobega who ill-advisedly went for a late tackle while being on a yellow card. Therefore, the former midfielder earned his marching orders, leaving Bologna with a numerical disadvantage for an entire half. Samuel Gigot Scores Maiden Lazio Goal In the second period, Castellanos’ close-range header whistled past the post, while Boulaye Dia’s goal was ruled out for offside. Nevertheless, Lazio eventually found the breakthrough when the Rossoblu defenders failed to clear Zaccagni’s corner kick, allowing Samuel Gigot to poach it from the goalline. Mattia Zaccagni Doubles Lazio Lead The Lazio captain then collaborated with Luca Pellegrini to score the second goal himself following a brilliant linkup on the left flank. Zaccagni stormed into the box before finding the far corner with his trademark low drive. Fisayo Dele-Bashiru Scores Maiden Serie A Goal Despite his late entry, still found time to open his Serie A account. Loum Tchaouna and Manuel Lazzari combined to put Gustav Isaksen through on goal. The Dane rounded Bologna goalkeeper Federico Ravaglia who brought him down. But while the referee was preparing to blow his whistle, the Nigerian midfielder latched onto the loose ball to place his shot in the empty net. Therefore, Lazio managed to maintain their fifth place in the Serie A table as they remain a single point behind league leaders Napoli.Global stocks end mostly up with DAX crossing 20,000 for 1st time

As the consequences of Justin Baldoni ‘s alleged sexual harassment and retaliation against Blake Lively deepen, SAG-AFTRA has now come out condemning the “startling and troubling allegations.” “We applaud Blake Lively’s courage in speaking out on issues of retaliation and harassment and for her request to have an intimacy coordinator for all scenes with nudity or sexual content,” a guild spokesperson told Deadline Monday. “This is an important step that helps ensure a safe set.” On Dec. 20, the It All Ends With Us star/producer filed a complaint against her co-star and director Baldoni, along with his company Wayfarer Studios and others with California’s Civil Rights Department. While not formally a lawsuit, Lively’s action is a clear indication of an official filing in the courts to follow. After the claims of sexual harassment, retaliation and a social media campaign allegedly orchestrated to smear Lively, Baldoni was abruptly dropped from their mutual agency WME [which also reps Lively’s husband Ryan Reynolds]. Though Baldoni’s lawyer Bryan Freedman adamantly denies any wrongdoing on his client’s part, the matter seems to be escalating quickly with many Hollywood A-listers flocking to Lively’s side and further industry blowback against the Jane the Virgin alum. “Employees have every right to raise issues of concern or to file complaints, a guild spokesperson told Deadline. Retaliation for reporting misconduct or inappropriate behavior is illegal and wrong.” “We all have a right to be treated with dignity and respect on the job and to work in an environment free of harassment, discrimination and retaliation,” the spokesperson added. As we reported earlier, over the weekend Jennifer Abel, a publicist for Baldoni defended her client in a post on social media, saying “although we were prepared, we didn’t have to do anything over the top to protect our client,” adding “What the cherry-picked messages don’t include, although not shockingly, as it doesn’t fit the narrative, is that it was no ‘smear’ implied, no negative press was ever facilitated, no social combat plan, although we were prepared for it, as it’s our job to be ready for any scenario, but we didn’t have to implement anything, because the internet was doing the work for us.” In the aftermath of Lively’s explosive allegations against Jane the Virgin alum Baldoni, he was subsequently dropped by his and Lively’s mutual agency WME on December 21, as reported exclusively by Deadline . In a significant political move, the Bhajan Lal Sharma-led BJP government in Rajasthan has abolished nine districts and three divisions created by the previous Congress government under Ashok Gehlot during the election year. The decision was made during a state cabinet meeting, immediately followed by a sitting of the entire council of ministers, chaired by Chief Minister Sharma. Advertisement Last year, the Gehlot government, acting on the recommendations of the district reorganization committee, had established 17 new districts and three divisions. Advertisement Among these, the BJP government has now abolished three divisions—Sikar, Pali, and Banswara—and nine districts, namely Dudu, Kekri, Shahpura, Neem-Ka-Thana, Gangapur City, Jaipur-Rural, Jodhpur-Rural, Anoopgarh, and Sanchore. However, eight newly formed districts—Deeg, Balotra, Khairthal-Tizara, Beawar, Kotputli-Behror, Deedwana-Kuchaman, Phalodi, and Salumbar—have been retained. Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Joga Ram Patel stated in a press briefing that the decision was based on recommendations from the Review Committee. Patel criticized the Congress government, claiming it had created the new districts and divisions purely for political gain ahead of the assembly elections. “The move was impractical, lacking proper financial planning, population assessments, and adherence to established norms,” Patel added. The Congress party has strongly condemned the BJP’s decision, labeling it as undemocratic, wrong, and anti-people. Former Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot defended his government’s decision, asserting that it was a well-considered measure aimed at improving governance. State Congress Chief Govind Singh Dotasara and Leader of the Opposition Tikaram Julie, in a joint media briefing, announced plans for widespread protests and the possibility of challenging the BJP government’s decision in court. A loss away from home on league duty for Rangers is not new and that, in and of itself, is the problem. Last night’s 2-1 defeat against St Mirren marked four from eight since August. Some believed this group were turning a corner in December, with impressive performances against Tottenham and Celtic alongside an improvement in chances created against Dundee, Kilmarnock and Ross County. Celtic’s dropped points last week against Dundee United and Aberdeen’s nosedive in form added a new tone to the conversation. Rangers could’ve, in theory, cut the gap at the top to six points and changed the feel of their season if the Old Firm went their way on January 2nd. Could Philippe Clement finally grasp momentum that’s proven out of reach since March? Now the prospect of sitting 15 behind the top of the table is more realistic come early January. Clement was vexed speaking to assembled media last night referencing an angry half-time in which he could’ve substituted “eight or nine” individuals who’d conspired to enter the dressing room a goal behind, insisting: “It's not a tactical [issue] because there was no big change in tactics in the second half. It's about quality, that moment, intensity. And that's the frustrating part, that I didn't see that one coming or nobody saw that one coming, if you see the consistency over the last two months.” And yet, as Rangers recorded their fourth domestic defeat on the road of the league season, the failure to acknowledge any pattern or assume any responsibility does not help. While it would be overly dramatic to suggest last night’s result was on the horizon, it would be overly optimistic to think it far out of reach. If anything, this performance was a continuation of what Rangers have served up for most of the season away from Ibrox. While St Mirren created a meagre open-play total (0.22xG) their penalty after 30 minutes offered an advantage to protect. Clement dismissed the notion that Rangers’ tempo dropped after Danilo’s equaliser on the hour but the stats disagree. Rangers ’ xG from 0-45 minutes was 0.17, from 47-61 minutes 1.05 and from 61-97 0.16. The last domestic trip before this, a 3-0 win over Ross County, was the only win Rangers have managed by a margin away from Ibrox all campaign. Only the Staggies have scored fewer on the road than the Ibrox side’s seven and Rangers’ xG difference after eight away league games, the quality of chances conceded minus chances created, comes in at 0.45, far off last season’s 1.11 and a home record of 1.93. This means that while Rangers have been somewhat unfortunate in results, the thin difference between the opportunities they’re fashioning and conceding has left games open to variables. Last night in the first-half they managed just one shot on goal before substitutions arrived and the tempo upped for a period. Rangers' shot map in last night's first-half Rangers' shot map in last night's second-half Clement recently dismissed talk that Rangers’ tactical approach is better suited to Europe, but the contrast in result and underlying number is stark. The Ibrox side are seven unbeaten under the Belgian’s management away in European competition. Their xG difference is 1.24 away from home, the best in the entire Europa League competition. What is it about trips in Scotland that prove so challenging? The Belgian is clearly not a bad coach or an incapable one. If penalty kicks had swung in the other direction at Hampden a fortnight ago in a game his team shaded, the conversation would have been so different. And yet, last night was not a new performance. Rangers scarcely control games when they dominate the ball and remain too reliant on individuals. Taking Nico Raskin and Danilo out of yesterday’s team demonstrated that fact. While the manager insisted his tactics did not change after the break the introduction of either player was stark. Clement had seemingly found a formula in recent weeks with two strikers, Igamane and Danilo, adding goalthreat and a clever rotation in attack alongside Ianis Hagi adding some much-needed unpredictability. It’s understandable, even in hindsight, that Raskin took a break at No.6 given a booking would’ve ruled him out of the January Old Firm. However, the call to not start with two strikers does not reflect well. Even if Rangers’ shape did not change the interpretation of that role by the Brazilian alongside Igamane in recent weeks has significantly improved Rangers’ attacking output. Look at the first-half pass network and consider Igamane’s positioning. The Moroccan naturally drifts wide and vacates central spaces and although Nedim Bajrami was occupying a favoured No.10 spot he didn’t provide a focal point before the break. Everything went around the hosts who were happy to defend crosses. Rangers' first-half pass network By contrast in the second-half as the tempo lifted, Rangers’ No.99 offered a central option when Igamane drifted wide. Ultimately the damage was done in a first 45 minutes that left the visitors chasing outcomes. (Image: StatsBomb) Rangers' second-half pass network (including substitutes) Clement remains in a delicate position where he must consider the future yet cannot overlook the present. Raskin will make the Old Firm but at what cost? Although the manager insisted post-match his team “do not go back to zero” the trust delicately built in recent weeks has crumbled once again. There are no shortage of problems to seek in defence, an area Rangers were already planning to strengthen in January. While Dujon Sterling was culpable with an error in losing the ball as St Mirren stole all three points he appeared the club’s most apt centre-back on a night when Leon Balogun limped off injured. Robin Propper, after better weeks, required bailing out by teammates consistently and was culpable at both goals. The Dutchman saw Greg Kiltie run behind him as Jack Butland conceded an early penalty and played a square pass to Sterling under pressure in injury time before failing to clear a subsequent cross. Would it have been wiser to keep Sterling on the left side of defence, able to cover the gaps left by Jefte’s forward runs, as opposed to isolating Propper in that same space? This was a night that again left Rangers asking searching questions when they badly required answers. Netanyahu, After Major Strikes on Houthis: 'We Will Get the Job Done'

MAGDEBURG, Germany — Mourners laid flowers near the scene of the deadly Christmas market attack on Monday while fears swirled that the rampage could deepen divisions in German society. The Johanniskirche, a church a short walk from the scene of the attack, became a central place of mourning since the suspect drove a car into the busy market on Friday evening, killing five people. A carpet of flowers covers the broad sidewalk in front of the church. Prosecutors said the number of injured rose to as many as 235 as more people have reported to hospitals and doctors, but it’s possible there was some double-counting. Authorities identified the suspect as a Saudi doctor who arrived in Germany in 2006 and received permanent residency. They say the man described himself as an ex-Muslim who was highly critical of Islam, and on social media expressed support for the far right. The interior minister of Saxony-Anhalt state, Tamara Zieschang, told lawmakers Monday that police contacted him in September 2023 and again in October this year, but didn’t comment publicly on why, German news agency dpa reported. By Nandita Bose WEST PALM BEACH, Florida, - Elon Musk, the billionaire CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, vowed to go to "war" to defend the H-1B visa program for foreign tech workers late on Friday amid a dispute between President-elect Donald Trump's longtime supporters and his most recently acquired backers from the tech industry. In a post on social media platform X, Musk said "The reason I'm in America along with so many critical people who built SpaceX, Tesla and hundreds of other companies that made America strong is because of H1B." "I will go to war on this issue the likes of which you cannot possibly comprehend," he added. Musk, a naturalized U.S. citizen born in South Africa, has held an H-1B visa, and his electric-car company Tesla obtained 724 of the visas this year. H-1B visas are typically for three-year periods, though holders can extend them or apply for green cards. Musk's tweet was directed at Trump's supporters and immigration hardliners, who have increasingly pushed for the H-1B visa program to be scrapped amid a heated debate over immigration and the place of skilled immigrants and foreign workers brought into the country on work visas. Trump has so far remained silent on the issue. The Trump transition did not respond to a request for comment on Musk's tweets and the H-1B visa debate. In the past, Trump has expressed a willingness to provide more work visas to skilled workers. He has also promised to deport all immigrants who are in the U.S. illegally, deploy tariffs to help create more jobs for American citizens and severely restrict immigration. The issue highlights how tech leaders like Musk who has taken an important role in the presidential transition, advising on key personnel and policy areas are now drawing scrutiny from his base. The U.S. tech industry relies on the government's H-1B visa program to hire foreign skilled workers to help run its companies, a labor force that critics say undercuts wages for American citizens. The altercation was set off earlier this week by far-right activists who criticized Trump's selection of Sriram Krishnan, an Indian American venture capitalist, to be an adviser on artificial intelligence, saying he would have influence on the Trump administration's immigration policies. On Friday, Steve Bannon, a longtime Trump confidante, critiqued "big tech oligarchs" for supporting the H-1B program and cast immigration as a threat to Western civilization. In response, Musk and many other tech billionaires drew a line between what they view as legal immigration and illegal immigration. Musk has spent more than a quarter of a billion dollars helping Trump get elected president in November. He has posted regularly this week about the lack of homegrown talent to fill all the needed positions within American tech companies. Only time will tell if this partnership will serve Nigeria’s interests or if it will reduce the nation to yet another pawn in France's relentless quest for dominance in Africa." Phillies add depth to bullpen with 1-year deal for reliever Joe RossHarris Dickinson was nervous to approach Nicole Kidman . This would not necessarily be notable under normal circumstances, but the English actor had already been cast to star opposite her in the erotic drama “Babygirl,” as the intern who initiates an affair with Kidman’s buttoned-up CEO. They’d had a zoom with the writer-director Halina Reijn, who was excited by their playful banter and sure that Dickinson would hold his own. And yet when he found himself at the same event as Kidman, shyness took over. He admitted as much to Margaret Qualley, who took things into her own hands and introduced them. “She helped me break the ice a bit,” Dickinson said in a recent interview with The Associated Press. On set would be an entirely different story. Dickinson might not be nearly as “puckishly audacious” as his character Samuel but in the making of “Babygirl,” he, Kidman and Reijn had no choice but to dive fearlessly into this exploration of sexual power dynamics, going to intimate, awkward, exhilarating and meme-able places. It’s made the film, in theaters Christmas Day, one of the year’s must-sees. “There was an unspoken thing that we adhered to,” Dickinson said. “We weren’t getting to know each other’s personal lives. When we were working and we were the characters, we didn’t veer away from the material. I never tried to attach all of the history of Nicole Kidman. Otherwise it probably would have been a bit of a mess.” RELATED COVERAGE Movie Review: Nicole Kidman commands the erotic office drama ‘Babygirl’ ★ ★ ★ ★ Movie Review: Nicole Kidman commands the erotic office drama ‘Babygirl’ ★ ★ ★ ★ His is a performance that reconfirms what many in the film world have suspected since his debut seven years ago as a Brooklyn tough questioning his sexuality in Eliza Hittman’s “Beach Rats” : Dickinson is one of the most exciting young talents around. Dickinson, 28, grew up in Leytonstone, in East London — the same neck of the woods as Alfred Hitchcock. Cinema was in his life, whether it was Christopher Nolan’s “Batman” films at the local multiplex or venturing into town to see the more social realist films of Mike Leigh and Ken Loach. “Working class cinema interested me,” he said. “People around me that represented my world.” Appropriately, his entry into making art started behind the camera, with a comedy web series he made as a kid, which he now describes as “really bad spoofs” of films and shows of the time. But things started to really click when he began acting in the local theater. “I remember feeling invigorated by it and accepted,” he said. “I felt myself for the first time and felt able to express myself in a way where I didn’t feel vulnerable and I felt alive and ignited by something.” At around 17, someone suggested that he should give acting a try professionally. He hadn’t even fully understood that it was a career possibility, but he started auditioning. At 20, he was cast in “Beach Rats” and, he said, just “kept going.” Since then, he’s gotten a wide range of opportunities in films both big, including “The King’s Man,” and small. He’s captivated as a male model in Ruben Östlund’s Cannes-winning “Triangle of Sadness,” an estranged father to a 12-year-old in Charlotte Regan’s “Scrapper,” an actor bringing an ex-boyfriend to life in Joanna Hogg’s “The Souvenir Part II,” the charismatic, tragic wrestler David Von Erich in Sean Durkin’s “The Iron Claw” and a soldier in Steve McQueen’s “Blitz.” But “Babygirl” would present new challenges and opportunities with a character who’s almost impossible to define. “He was confusing in a really interesting way. There wasn’t loads of specificity to it, which I enjoyed because it was a bit of a challenge to sort of pinpoint exactly what it was that drove him and made him tick,” Dickinson said. “There was a directness that unlocked a lot for me, like a fearlessness with the way he spoke, or a social unawareness in a way — like not fully realizing what he’s saying is affecting someone in a certain way. But I didn’t make too many rules for him.” Part of the allure of the film is the ever-shifting power dynamics between the two characters, which could change over the course of a scene. As Reijn said, “It’s a cautionary tale about what happens when you suppress your own desires.” She was especially in awe of Dickinson’s ability to make everything feel improvised and the fact that he could look like a 12-year-old boy in one shot and a confident 45-year-old man in the next. Since its premiere at the Venice Film Festival earlier this year, the film has led to some surprisingly direct conversations with audiences spanning generations. But that, Dickinson understood, was what Reijn wanted. “She really wanted to show the ugliness and the awkwardness of these things, of these relationships and sex,” he said. “That sort of fumbly version and the performative version of it is way more interesting, to me at least, than the kind of fantasized, romanticized, sexy thing that we’ve seen a lot.” Dickinson recently stepped behind the camera again, directing his first feature film under the banner of his newly formed production company. Set against the backdrop of homelessness in London, “Dream Space” is about a drifter trying to assimilate and understand his cyclical behavior. The film, which wrapped earlier this year, has given him a heightened appreciation for just how many people are indispensable in the making of a film. He’s also started to understand that “acting is just being able to relax.” “When you’re relaxed, you can do stuff that is truthful,” he said. “That only happens if you’ve got good people around you: The director that creates the good environment. The intimacy coordinator facilitating a safe space. A coworker in Nicole encouraging that kind of bravery and performance with what she’s doing.” Dickinson did eventually get to the point where he managed to ask Kidman questions about working with Stanley Kubrick and Lars Von Trier. But he also kept one shattering possibility between himself and his director. “There is a world in which Samuel doesn’t even exist. He’s just a sort of a device or a figment for her own story. And I like that because it kind of means you can take the character into a very unrealistic realm at times and be almost like a deity in the story,” Dickinson said. “We didn’t talk about it with Nicole.”

Aston Villa had a stoppage-time goal disallowed as they drew 0-0 with Juventus in the Champions League. Morgan Rogers looked to have given Unai Emery’s side another famous win when he slammed a loose ball home at the death, but referee Jesus Gil Manzano ruled Diego Carlos to have fouled Juve goalkeeper Michele Di Gregorio and the goal was chalked off. It was a disappointment for Villa, who remain unbeaten at home in their debut Champions League campaign and are still in contention to qualify automatically for the last 16. The Argentina international paraded his two Yashin Trophies on the pitch before kick-off at Villa Park and then showed why he won back-to-back FIFA awards when he denied Francisco Conceicao. Before Rogers’ moment of drama in the fourth minute of added time, the closest Villa came to scoring was in the first half when Lucas Digne’s free-kick hit the crossbar. But a draw was a fair result which leaves Villa out of the top eight on goal difference and Juventus down in 19th. Before the game Emery called Juventus one of the “best teams in the world, historically and now”, but this was an Italian side down to the bare bones. Only 14 outfield players made the trip from Turin, with striker Dusan Vlahovic among those who stayed behind. The opening 30 minutes were forgettable before the game opened up. Ollie Watkins, still chasing his first Champions League goal, had Villa’s first presentable chance as he lashed an effort straight at Di Gregorio. Matty Cash then had a vicious effort from the resulting corner which was blocked by Federico Gatti and started a counter-attack which ended in Juventus striker Timothy Weah. Villa came closest to breaking the deadlock at the end of the first half when Digne’s 20-yard free-kick clipped the top of the crossbar and went over. Martinez then produced his brilliant save just after the hour. A corner made its way through to the far post where Conceicao was primed to head in at the far post, but Martinez sprawled himself across goal to scoop the ball away. How has he kept that one out?! 🤯 Emi Martinez with an INCREDIBLE save to keep it goalless at Villa Park ⛔️ 📺 @tntsports & @discoveryplusUK pic.twitter.com/OkcWHB7YIk — Football on TNT Sports (@footballontnt) November 27, 2024 Replays showed most of the ball went over the line, but the Argentinian got there with millimetres to spare. At the other end another fine goal-line block denied John McGinn as Manuel Locatelli got his foot in the way with Di Gregorio beaten. The game looked to be petering out until a last-gasp free-kick saw Rogers slam home, but whistle-happy official Gil Manzano halted the celebrations by ruling the goal out.

Is Taiwan Semiconductor About to Surge? History Could Repeat Itself: Amid a debate on the EVM credibility re-started by some Opposition parties after the debacle in Maharashtra assembly polls, rights activist Medha Patkar on Saturday said many countries have stopped using them. Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge recently suggested that ballot papers be reintroduced in the election mechanism. “I am not an expert on EVMs but it is true that many countries have stopped using them. Experiments show that certain systems can be changed with a mere electric connection,” Patkar told reporters in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar city. She was conferred the honorary D.Litt by the Mahatma Gandhi Mission University. Patkar said the code of conduct for polls cannot be implemented impartially if the Election Commission has links with any political party. The activist said the monthly financial assistance of Rs 1,500 being given to women who come from poor families under the Maharashtra government's “Mazi Ladki Bahin” scheme won't resolve their problems.
