Up: Bryce Young Between The Numbers Bryce Young’s improvement since his return from benching has a few things behind it. We’ve talked a lot in 1st & 10 and the quarterback rankings about how his comfort in the pocket has allowed him to avoid sacks when pressured. He has one of the lowest pressure-to-sack rates in the league. That comfort has also increased for his throws between the numbers. During the first two weeks of the season, Young threw 41.1 percent of his passes between the numbers. On those plays, he averaged -0.42 EPA per play with a 34.8 percent success rate. Since his return, Young has kept the rate of throws about the same at 42.9 percent but he’s been more successful throwing to that area, averaging 0.16 EPA per play with a 49.4 percent success rate. Those numbers aren’t overwhelming on their own, but they do highlight his processing improvement and comfortability in the offense. Production could also be better if receivers caught some passes to that area. He’s not overthinking these throws and that led to a confidence that has allowed him to fit the ball into some tight spaces. Here’s a 13-yard throw to Adam Thielen against Philadelphia on a third-and-13. During the first two weeks of the season he threw two picks to that area. Even last season when he had moderate success between the numbers, he threw seven interceptions. Young doesn’t have a rocket arm like some of the other top quarterbacks in the league and doesn’t have the receivers right now who win on the outside consistently, so having this success in the middle of the field is going to go a long in way in his continued development and can be a safety net as he progresses and more talent can eventually be added on the outside. Down: Deebo Samuel rushes It hasn’t been a great season for Deebo Samuel as a receiver. He’s only averaging 1.66 yards per route run with a 19.6 percent target share. Over the past five games, his high in receiving yards is 22. He finished with 16 on Thursday night against the Rams, along with a few drops, one that could have changed the game. What’s made Samuel so valuable during his tenure with the 49ers has been his versatility. He can line up anywhere, which has been a big part of the San Francisco offense being able to move everyone around. With that, Samuel has become a threat as a runner. Occasionally it’s been jet sweeps and end-arounds but when the 49ers need it, he’s also taken direct handoffs from the backfield. That hasn’t worked this season. Samuel leads all wide receivers with 34 carries this season. That includes having an extra game on Thursday night but he’s 20 attempts ahead of the next receiver. On rushing attempts, Samuel has averaged -0.25 EPA per play with a 35.5 percent success rate. Last year on 37 carries, he had a 62.2 percent success rate. The suddenness and agility do not seem to be there, especially on the traditional handoffs when Samuel is running straight into the line. pic.twitter.com/byFKGizsD9 It’s been a rough go for Samuel in what’s likely his last as a 49er. Up: Jameson Williams, varied big plays One of the questions for the Detroit offense coming into the season was if there would be a second receiver who emerged as a threat. The passing offense had been funneled through Amon-Ra St. Brown and then Sam LaPorta helped as a second option last season. Most of that was done through the short-middle area of the field. If the Lions could have Jameson Williams develop into an explosive option down the field, it could open up so many things for the offense. Well, Williams has been able to be the explosive player down the field... and he’s also been able to do it on throws to the middle of the field to fit in with the rest of the Detroit offense. Williams is tied for seventh among receivers with 14 plays of 20 or more yards. He’s been able to win deep but also take crossers and run with them for big gains. Here’s where Williams’s big plays have been caught: Williams can turn anything into a big play. Of the 65 receivers with an average depth of target of at least 10.0, no one has a higher average yards after the catch per reception than Williams at 8.8. His speed plays to both get down the field and eliminate defenders’ angles once he gets the ball in his hands. pic.twitter.com/ehdgIlHjpz Overall, Williams is 17th in yards per route run and has a higher figure than St. Brown. Down: Russell Wilson Extending Plays There has been a lot of good for the Pittsburgh offense since Russell Wilson took over as the starting quarterback. Wilson, in many aspects, has looked more like the player we saw in Seattle than having any resemblance to the struggling quarterback we saw in Denver. Wilson has gotten the deep ball back and a connection with George Pickens has created enough explosives to carry the offense through the second half of the season. Those famous Wilson moonballs are working in structure but they haven’t had the same success when out of structure. When Wilson holds the ball for at least four seconds this season, he’s 33rd of 34 qualified quarterbacks in EPA per play with the third-lowest success rate. On those plays, Wilson has an 11.6-yard aDOT but averages just 3.4 yards per attempt. The rhythm and precision that come when he reaches the top of his drop and throws deep isn’t there once he’s on the run. pic.twitter.com/qwQ4rNl7Vk This is also an area where Wilson’s relative lack of mobility has come up. He doesn’t have the same athleticism to avoid defenders when he’s trying to extend plays. He’s already taken 22 hits on plays that last at least four seasons. That’s the fourth most in the league and Wilson hasn’t been starting for a full season. He’s the only quarterback to take a hit on more than 50 percent of those plays (52.4 percent). Up: Zack Baun Downhill The emergence of Zack Baun has been one of the most unexpected developments on an Eagles defense that currently ranks first in weighted DVOA. Baun was a pass-rusher and special-teamer with the New Orleans Saints. When the Eagles, a team that has historically not invested much at the linebacker position, needed an answer, defensive coordinator Vic Fangio believed Baun could make the transition off the ball. That’s resulted in Baun's potential All-Pro season. He’s been one of the best all-around linebackers in the league and has been a central piece of the Philadelphia defense's improvement. His coverage has been impressive. Through Week 14, he’s 10th among linebackers in yards allowed per coverage snap. But the area where he’s flashed his dominance is when he can get downhill. That’s closer to the skill set he had when playing on the edge but he’s taken that a step further and been a bullet in run fits. He leads all linebackers with seven tackles for loss against the run. Give him an open lane and Baun is going to take it. pic.twitter.com/9G5WF5IVJC Baun currently leads the league in tackles that produce a positive play for the defense. His 83 such tackles are 13 more than the next defender. He’s a high-volume tackler, but 64.3 percent of his total tackles have produced positive EPA for the defense, which is the second-highest rate for linebackers. Down: The extra Caleb Williams hitch Throwing deep has been an issue for Caleb Williams all season. The timing and touch in this offense have not come quite as naturally as some other aspects of his game, even in the sports when things were going well. There’s just been a tick of hesitation when Williams has tried to let it rip. In some cases, it’s been when he’s been too stubborn to stay in the pocket and make things work. He knows what’s supposed to be happening in the progression and he’s going to make it happen . But often it’s not going to work and he’d be better off trying to get outside and extend the play that way. Against the 49ers, there were two plays where Williams knew what he wanted to do but it wasn’t open. Instead of moving on, he took an extra hitch to wait it out and fired it anyway. The first came with Rome Odunze running a double move against Fred Warner. Odunze ran toward Warner before breaking vertically. Instead of ripping the ball when Odunze was making his break, Williams held on for an extra tick until Odunze cleared Warner but by that time the window to fit the ball was nonexistent. pic.twitter.com/7WfUhHZPJW Later in the game, he had a dig to DJ Moore off a hard play-action from under center. Williams knew he had to move the linebacker to open the throwing lane, but as he tried to do so, it took a few extra hitches. We saw that in the first games under Thomas Brown as offensive coordinator. The whole process looked clunkier with Brown serving as head coach, so we’ll see if some of the process can be sped up in a positive way going forward. Up: Christian Benford’s Coverage Christian Benford has been one of the best cornerbacks in the league this season. He’s currently fifth among corners in adjusted yards allowed per coverage snap, which adjusts for touchdowns and interceptions. Benford’s play can be overlooked because he doesn’t have a ton of splash plays in coverage. He only has eight passes defensed and one interception. But his down-to-down consistency in coverage has been huge on the outside for Buffalo. He plays on both sides of the field and because the Bills play so often in zone coverage, his responsibilities on a given play can vary wildly. But whatever he’s been tasked to do, he’s been sticky in coverage. pic.twitter.com/X09nnwWHGY Despite not having many plays on the ball, Benford has allowed a -4.0 percent catch rate over expectation and has forced a tight window on 24.5 percent of his targets, per Next Gen Stats. On plays lasting longer than 2.5 seconds, Benford has forced a tight window on 38.5 percent of targets, which is the fifth-highest among 96 defensive backs with at least 200 such coverage snaps. His skill will be needed this week against the Lions, as Rasul Douglas and Taylor Rapp have already been ruled out for Sunday. Down: Misrepresenting the end of Bill Belichick’s Patriots Tenure With Bill Belichick taking the head coach job at the University of North Carolina, there has been much talk about the end of Belichick’s time in New England and what that could mean for his time at the college level. There are two things that have stuck out to me as misrepresentations of some of Belichick’s shortcomings. The first is the idea that he stopped being a good coach in the final years with the Patriots. New England won 10 games with a rookie Mac Jones. There’s no excuse for what happened in Year 2 with putting Matt Patricia in charge of the offense but it’s not as if there was no offensive success after Tom Brady left. Last season, the New England defense ranked fourth in EPA per play. Many of the same players are on this year’s defense, which ranks 26th. Then there’s harping on how Bill Belichick the general manager didn’t do many favors for Belichick the coach. That’s true but I struggle to see how that’s going to impact his college roster. Sure, the receiver picks were bad, but we’re basing that on things like drafting N’Keal Harry in the first round. You know what N’Keal Harry did in his final two years in college? 2,230 receiving yards and 17 touchdowns. Recruiting college players and drafting for the NFL are two very different skills. There’s no guarantee that Belichick will thrive in that area at North Carolina, but his track record as an NFL general manager and drafter is not going to be the reason why he does or doesn’t. About 3,000 deaf athletes from 70 to 80 countries and regions will gather for the event. Preparations are progressing rapidly, but there are still a number of issues to be addressed before the opening ceremony, such as raising awareness of the event, promoting accessibility for deaf people, and training sign language interpreters. The Tokyo Deaflympics, the first to be held in Japan, will take place over 12 days from Nov. 15-26 next year, with 21 events at 15 venues in Tokyo, plus one additional venue each in Fukushima and Shizuoka prefectures. Most of the events will be the same as those held at the Olympics and Paralympics, but the Deaflympics will also include bowling and orienteering, in which competitors race to find their way to checkpoints in fields and mountains while reading a map. The first Deaflympics were held in Paris in 1924. They have a history of more than a century and are much older than the Paralympics, which began in 1960. However, compared to the Olympics and Paralympics, the Deaflympics are extremely little known. In a survey conducted by the Tokyo metropolitan government last year among Tokyo residents aged 18 and over, 93% of respondents were aware of the Paralympics, but only 15% were aware of the Deaflympics. In a 2021 nationwide survey conducted by the Nippon Foundation Paralympic Support Center, 97.9% of respondents were aware of the Paralympics, but only 16.3% were aware of the Deaflympics. The surveys showed that more than 80% of people in Tokyo and the rest of Japan were not aware of the Deaflympics. Even so, momentum for the games has been building in various parts of the country, with events such as the Deaflympics Festival organized by local governments and deaf organizations. Mitsuji Hisamatsu, chairman of the Organizing Committee of 2025 Summer Deaflympics, said: “Two years ago, when we were selected as the host city, we received inquiries once or twice a week, but now we receive inquiries from local governments and other organizations every day. I think awareness has increased significantly.” Starting next June, the National Caravan Activity is planned, in which a caravan will visit all 47 prefectures in Japan to hold events in lieu of a torch relay. The Tokyo metropolitan government, which is involved in the operation and preparation of the games, sees the Deaflympics as a great opportunity to promote barrier-free access to public facilities after the Tokyo Paralympics in 2021. In fiscal 2024, the Tokyo metropolitan government is promoting the installation of “light warning devices” at six facilities it owns, including Komazawa Olympic Park, which will be used as a venue for the games. In the event of a disaster, the system will alert people by flashing white lights. By next summer, special lights will be installed in the ceilings of 661 toilets, changing rooms and other facilities. In addition, devices that convert speech into text and display it on a screen in front of the user have been installed in about 40 locations, including sports facilities and libraries. The system displays the spoken words of hearing people as text, and deaf users can communicate by typing text on a terminal. The Tokyo metropolitan government’s International Sports Division says the system will also be helpful for elderly people with hearing difficulties. One of the biggest problems is finding international sign language interpreters. Like spoken languages, sign languages vary from country to country and region to region. For example, saying “thank you” in Japanese sign language involves placing the right hand vertically on the back of the left hand and making a gesture similar to a sword cut, while “thank you” in international sign language involves placing the right hand over the mouth and moving it away as if throwing a kiss. At international conferences for the deaf and sporting events such as the Deaflympics, international sign language has become the lingua franca, as the World Federation of the Deaf and other organizations have worked to develop and promote it. According to the Japan Information and Culture Center for the Deaf, there were 4,198 registered sign language interpreters in the nation as of October 2024. However, there are reportedly only a few people in Japan who can use international sign language. In preparation for the Deaflympics, the Japanese Federation of the Deaf has been holding exams for the registration of international sign language interpreters. Seven such interpreters were registered in December 2023. In addition, the Tokyo metropolitan government began subsidizing the fees for attending training courses in 2023, and a total of 331 people received such support in that year. However, there are still not many people in Japan who use international sign language, and there is an urgent need to raise social awareness of international sign language interpreters and to train more interpreters. The organizing committee aims to secure nearly 100 international sign language interpreters for the games. Hisamatsu, the chairman, said: “We want to have interpreters in place to ensure [communication of] information, such as for protests to the judges. We will try to ensure 100% communication.” Adam Kosa, president of the International Committee of Sports for the Deaf, the international governing body for the Deaflympics, visited the Tokyo metropolitan government building on Nov. 19 and met with Gov. Yuriko Koike. Kosa said: “The Deaflympics will be an opportunity to have a positive impact on Japanese society, just like the Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics. I believe it will help create a more inclusive Tokyo and Japan.” He called for the games to be a catalyst for creating a more diverse and accepting society. Koike responded in international sign language, saying: “We will create an environment where athletes can perform at their best. I am confident that these efforts will surely make Tokyo evolve and brighten the future.” She showed enthusiasm for further accelerating preparations for the games. Nebraska threw the ball well, protected its quarterback and found a "difference-maker" in running back Emmett Johnson. “We ran the ball better; that’s the second week in a row I thought the O-line has played well,” Holgorsen said. “Dylan (Raiola) hasn’t been hit a whole lot, he feels good, he’s getting better and processing things well. We’re throwing it and catching it better and our receivers are in the right spots.” It’s been no easy task to drive those improvements in a short amount of time. Holgorsen has only been in Lincoln for a little over three weeks, having first been summoned by head coach Matt Rhule to evaluate the team’s offense before taking over control of it. Midseason coordinator changes may not be rare, but hiring a new face from outside the program is, and Holgorsen admits it made for a “rough” first week on the job. After all, none of the Husker coaches Holgorsen was joining and players he was beginning to coach knew exactly how the situation would play out. Instead, they had to go through it together. “I started getting into the offensive room and those coaches were looking at me crazy like, ‘What are you doing here?’ It’s just true, so we had to sit down and talk and start feeling things out and start working together,” Holgorsen said. “Give those assistant coaches a lot of credit because they didn’t bat an eye. I thought we were smart with how we handled it — I could’ve came in here and changed specific things and that wouldn’t have been the right thing to do for the coaches and the players. I was the one that had to learn.” A desire to challenge himself was one reason Holgorsen said he took the Nebraska job, something which showed up in the new offensive language he needed to familiarize himself with. Having come up as a young coach in the Air Raid offense, Holgorsen exclusively learned, mastered and taught those principles in the years since. It had been 35 years since he last had to learn a new offensive language, Holgorsen estimated. Flash cards with terminology from the Nebraska offense and help from other assistants have helped smooth over that process. Holgorsen may not have been able to stamp his identity all over the offense yet, but he has been able to tweak things, including the very playbook Nebraska operates from. Rhule’s original concepts of a pro-style offense have been added to, transformed and adjusted over the years, with current coaches Marcus Satterfield, Glenn Thomas and Donovan Raiola all bringing different principles and focuses to the playbook. “There’s just all kinds of ideas, so that playbook got pretty big,” Holgorsen said. “I was just like, ‘Look, there’s only one sheet and whatever’s on the sheet is what’s going to get called.’” Trimming down the number of plays Nebraska practices is one such adjustment Holgorsen has made, a process that is collaborative among the Husker coaching staff. Holgorsen also said Nebraska was “probably playing people in too many different spots,” something he’s looked to change so players can focus on their individual roles with more accuracy. “We’ve done a good job of coming together and coming up with a plan of what makes sense to our players,” Holgorsen said. “If it don’t make sense to me, it ain’t gonna make sense to them.” Those changes, and the potential Nebraska showed on offense last week, have excited Husker fans about what the future of a Holgorsen-led offense will look like. However, nothing is guaranteed yet. Holgorsen said that when taking the job he told Rhule he’d get the team ready for USC, Wisconsin and Iowa before figuring out what the future holds. “I don’t want to talk about it, and I don’t want to know what’s next,” Holgorsen. What Holgorsen does know is that he’s enjoying the opportunity in front of him. In part because of the responsibilities he had as a head coach compared to being an offensive coordinator, Holgorsen said he had “more fun on Saturday than I’ve had in a long time” overseeing the Husker offense. As Holgorsen continues furthering improvements within the Nebraska offense, the only guarantee Husker fans have is that he’ll be on the sidelines Friday. A thrilling game went the distance and then some, and the Golden Bears (11-1) struck first in overtime after The Rock elected to play defense after winning the overtime coin toss. A 2-yard rushing touchdown by Luke Maxwell completed the 9-play drive giving Kutztown a 24-17 lead after the first overtime possession. However, Slippery Rock responded quickly and with vigor, and after a holding penalty brought back a touchdown run on third-and-3 from the 18, a 28-yard touchdown pass from Brayden Long to Logan Ramper put The Rock in position to tie the game. But a closely contested matchup would go just one play further, as Slippery Rock coach Shawn Lutz elected to go for a two-point conversion. To win the game, Long threw a screen pass to Mike Soloman near the left sideline. Soloman then immediately lateralled the ball back to Idris Lawrence in motion along the left side and Lawrence scooted into the end zone just past the left pylon for the game winning conversion. “It was just guts,” Lutz said. “We’re a relentless program. Give all the credit to Kutztown. They’re a great team. Our kids just don’t quit. I’m just really proud of them.” The Golden Bears were 11-0 and the PSAC champion heading into the game. Holding a 14-9 lead with just over 13 minutes left in the fourth, Kutztown stopped The Rock on fourth-and-3 from the Golden Bears’ 44. Quarterback Judd Novak also had a solid game running the football for the Golden Bears, as the redshirt sophomore had 79 rushing yards and a touchdown run on 12 carries. Novak was also 8-for-17 passing for 79 yards. “It didn’t come down to just the last play,” Clements said. “We had plenty of opportunities to win the game earlier, and we didn’t make plays when we needed to.” A huge 28-yard pass from Novak to Mekhi Gibson on third-and-8 by Kutztown from its own 48 put the Golden Bears in striking distance to start the fourth quarter. Moments later, a 9-yard touchdown run by Novak gave Kutztown its first lead of the game at 14-9. The Golden Bears trailed 9-7 at the half. After receiving the second half kickoff and starting at its own 25, Kutztown picked up three consecutive first downs on three plays to begin a promising drive at the start of the third quarter. Afraid of losing the US-Canada trade pact, Mexico alters its laws and removes Chinese parts

DETROIT (AP) — General Motors said Tuesday it will retreat from the robotaxi business and stop funding its money-losing Cruise autonomous vehicle unit. Instead the Detroit automaker will focus on development of partially automated driver-assist systems for personal vehicles like its Super Cruise, which allows drivers to take their hands off the steering wheel. GM said it would get out of robotaxis “given the considerable time and resources that would be needed to scale the business, along with an increasingly competitive robotaxi market.” The company said it will combine Cruise's technical team with its own to work on advanced systems to assist drivers. GM bought control of San Francisco-based Cruise automation in 2016 with high hopes of developing a profitable fleet of robotaxis. Over the years GM invested billions in the subsidiary and eventually bought 90% of the company from investors, all while racking up millions in losses. GM’s brushoff of Cruise represents a dramatic about-face from years of full-blown support that left a huge financial dent in the automaker. The company invested $2.4 billion in Cruise only to sustain years of uninterrupted losses, with little in return. Since GM bought a controlling stake in Cruise for $581 million in 2016, the robotaxi service piled up more than $10 billion in operating losses while bringing in less than $500 million in revenue, according to GM shareholder reports filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission. The automaker even announced plans for Cruise to generate $1 billion in annual revenue by 2025, but it scaled back spending on the company after one of its autonomous Chevrolet Bolts dragged a San Francisco pedestrian who was hit by another vehicle in 2023. The California Public Utilities Commission alleged Cruise then covered up details of the crash for more than two weeks. The embarrassing incident resulted in Cruise’s license to operate its driverless fleet in California being suspended by regulators and triggered a purge of its leadership — in addition to layoffs that jettisoned about a quarter of its workforce . GM CEO Mary Barra told analysts on a conference call Tuesday the the new unit will focus on personal vehicles and developing systems that can drive by themselves in certain circumstances. The company has agreements to buy another 7% of Cruise and intends to buy the remaining shares so it owns the whole company. The move is another step back from autonomous vehicles, which have proved far harder to develop than companies once anticipated. Two years ago, crosstown rival Ford Motor Co. disbanded its Argo AI autonomous vehicle venture in Pittsburgh that it co-owned with Volkswagen. At the time the company said it didn’t see a path to profitability for a number of years. Yet other companies are pressing forward with plans to deploy autonomous vehicles and expanding their services. Alphabet Inc.'s Waymo is accelerating plans to broaden its robotaxi service beyond areas of metropolitan Phoenix, San Francisco and Los Angeles. Last week the company said it would begin testing its driverless Jaguars in Miami next year, with plans to start charging for rides in 2026. The move comes less than a month after Waymo opened up its robotaxi service to anyone looking for a ride in an 80-square-mile (129 square kilometer) area of Los Angeles. Waymo also has plans to launch fleets in Atlanta and Austin next year in partership with ride-hailing leader Uber. In April, a company called Aurora Innovation plans to start hauling freight on Texas freeways using fully driverless semis. Tesla CEO Elon Musk has said his company plans to have autonomous Models Y and 3 running without human drivers next year. Robotaxis without steering wheels using Tesla's “Full Self-Driving” system would be available in 2026 starting in California and Texas, he said. But an investigation by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration into Full Self-Driving's ability to see in low visibility conditions cast doubt on whether Teslas are ready to be deployed without humans behind the wheel. The agency began the investigation in October after getting reports of four crashes involving “Full Self-Driving” when Teslas encountered sun glare, fog and airborne dust. An Arizona pedestrian was killed in one of the crashes. GM said it will work with Cruise’s leadership to restructure the company and refocus Cruise’s operations on driver assist systems. The company expects the restructuring to reduce spending by more than $1 billion annually. Cruise has about 2,300 employees and will retain a presence in San Francisco, GM said. It’s too early to talk about employment levels until the restructuring is completed next year, a spokesman said. Dave Richardson, senior vice president of software and services engineering, said Cruise will bring its software, artificial intelligence and sensor development to GM to team up on improving GM’s driver-assist systems. “We want to leverage what already has been done as we go forward, and we think we can do that very effectively,” Barra said. Now that’s he’s preparing to return to the Oval Office, Trump is back at it, and his trolling is attracting more attention — and eyerolls. On Sunday, Trump turned a photo of himself seated near a smiling first lady Jill Biden at the Notre Dame ceremony into a social media promo for his new perfume and cologne line, with the tag line, “A fragrance your enemies can’t resist!” The first lady’s office declined to comment. When Trudeau hastily flew to Florida to meet with Trump last month over the president-elect’s threat to impose a 25% tax on all Canadian products entering the U.S., the Republican tossed out the idea that Canada become the 51st U.S. state. The Canadians passed off the comment as a joke, but Trump has continued to play up the dig, including in a post Tuesday morning on his social media network referring to the prime minister as “Governor Justin Trudeau of the Great State of Canada.” After decades as an entertainer and tabloid fixture, Trump has a flair for the provocative that is aimed at attracting attention and, in his most recent incarnation as a politician, mobilizing fans. He has long relished poking at his opponents, both to demean and minimize them and to delight supporters who share his irreverent comments and posts widely online and cheer for them in person. Trump, to the joy of his fans, first publicly needled Canada on his social media network a week ago when he posted an AI-generated image that showed him standing on a mountain with a Canadian flag next to him and the caption “Oh Canada!” After his latest post, Canadian Immigration Minister Marc Miller said Tuesday: “It sounds like we’re living in a episode of South Park.” Trudeau said earlier this week that when it comes to Trump, “his approach will often be to challenge people, to destabilize a negotiating partner, to offer uncertainty and even sometimes a bit of chaos into the well established hallways of democracies and institutions and one of the most important things for us to do is not to freak out, not to panic.” Even Thanksgiving dinner isn’t a trolling-free zone for Trump’s adversaries. Dear Eric: We live on a lake and love hosting our great-nieces and nephews on school breaks and the entire family on vacations. My husband and I have no children. Our niece’s families are dear to us. Our 11-year-old great-nephew has been gaming now for about a year. When he comes to visit, instead of reading, playing cards or board games with us, like in the past, he wants to disappear with his video games. We feel vacated. How do we navigate this with his parents who think his being on a video gaming team at school is awesome and I think it is a bad omen? What is a fair place of compromise and balance? – Game Off Dear Game Off: Let his parents parent their child. The other night I re-watched the movie “Network” from 1977 (stay with me here; it relates). In it, a character in his 60s dismisses a character played by a young Faye Dunaway by saying “she’s the television generation. She learned life from Bugs Bunny. The only reality she knows is what comes to her over her TV set.” Every generation has anxieties about the ways that technology is changing social interactions or altering the minds of the generations below. While some of those concerns are valid, those of Faye Dunaway’s generation (now in their 70s and 80s) would argue that they’ve managed to stay quite well-rounded, despite (and often with the aid of) TV. In moderation, video games have been shown to improve a child’s cognitive function and working memory. While your great-nephew’s gaming might not be your choice, it’s important that you not seek to undermine the research and thinking that his parents have done about it. What you’re really yearning for is a sense of togetherness as a family, so try talking to your niece and her spouse about group activities you can plan to meet your great-nephew where he is. And don’t be afraid to pick up a controller and ask him to show you the ropes. Dear Eric: I eat at a local restaurant a couple times a week and tend to get one of three meals. This one waitress asks me what I want to eat, but then interrupts me to make guesses or tell me my choice. I just put my head down and nod yes or no to the guesses. It’s frustrating, but not life-threatening. She enjoys it. I hate it. However, if I were to say something, it would force her to make the choice of being herself, doing something she likes doing, or appeasing me so I can order the way I want to order. But know you won’t be causing her suffering by saying something like “I’ve already decided on my meal. By BARBARA ORTUTAY, AP Technology Writer Nearly half of American teenagers say they are online “constantly” despite concerns about the effects of social media and smartphones on their mental health, according to a new report published Thursday by the Pew Research Center. As in past years, YouTube was the single most popular platform teenagers used — 90% said they watched videos on the site, down slightly from 95% in 2022. Nearly three-quarters said they visit YouTube every day. There was a slight downward trend in several popular apps teens used. For instance, 63% of teens said they used TikTok, down from 67% and Snapchat slipped to 55% from 59%. This small decline could be due to pandemic-era restrictions easing up and kids having more time to see friends in person, but it’s not enough to be truly meaningful. X saw the biggest decline among teenage users. Only 17% of teenagers said they use X, down from 23% in 2022, the year Elon Musk bought the platform. Reddit held steady at 14%. About 6% of teenagers said they use Threads, Meta’s answer to X that launched in 2023. The report comes as countries around the world are grappling with how to handle the effects of social media on young people’s well-being. Australia recently passed a law banning kids under 16 from social networks, though it’s unclear how it will be able to enforce the age limit — and whether it will come with unintended consequences such as isolating vulnerable kids from their peers. (NASDAQ:KNSA)BEIRUT (AP) — Insurgents' stunning march across Syria gained speed on Saturday with news that they had reached the suburbs of the capital and with the government forced to deny rumors that President Bashar Assad had fled the country. The rebels' moves around Damascus, reported by an opposition war monitor and a rebel commander, came after the Syrian army withdrew from much of southern part of the country, leaving more areas, including two provincial capitals, under the control of opposition fighters. The advances in the past week were among the largest in recent years by opposition factions, led by a group that has its origins in al-Qaida and is considered a terrorist organization by the U.S. and the United Nations. As they have advanced, the insurgents, led by the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham group, or HTS, have met little resistance from the Syrian army. The U.N.’s special envoy for Syria, Geir Pedersen, on Saturday called for urgent talks in Geneva to ensure an “orderly political transition.” Speaking to reporters at the annual Doha Forum in Qatar, he said the situation in Syria was changing by the minute. In Damascus, people rushed to stock up on supplies. Thousands rushed the Syria border with Lebanon, trying to leave the country. Many shops in the capital were shuttered, a resident told The Associated Press, and those that remained open ran out of staples such as sugar. Some shops were selling items at three times the normal price. “The situation is very strange. We are not used to that,” the resident said, insisting on anonymity, fearing retributions. “People are worried whether there will be a battle (in Damascus) or not.” It was the first time that opposition forces reach the outskirts of Damascus since 2018, when Syrian troops recaptured the area following a yearslong siege. Amid the developments, Syria’s state media denied rumors flooding social media that Assad has left the country, saying he is performing his duties in Damascus. Assad's chief international backer, Russia, is busy with its war in Ukraine . Lebanon’s powerful Hezbollah, which at one point sent thousands of fighters to shore up Assad's forces, has been weakened by a yearlong conflict with Israel. Iran, meanwhile, has seen its proxies across the region degraded by regular Israeli airstrikes. Pedersen said a date for the talks in Geneva on the implementation of U.N. Resolution 2254 would be announced later. The resolution, adopted in 2015, called for a Syrian-led political process, starting with the establishment of a transitional governing body, followed by the drafting of a new constitution and ending with U.N.-supervised elections. Rami Abdurrahman, who heads the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, an opposition war monitor, said insurgents were in the Damascus suburbs of Maadamiyah, Jaramana and Daraya. Opposition fighters were also marching from eastern Syria toward the Damascus suburb of Harasta, he added. A commander with the insurgents, Hassan Abdul-Ghani, posted on the Telegram messaging app that opposition forces had begun the “final stage” of their offensive by encircling Damascus. Syria’s military, meanwhile, sent large numbers of reinforcements to defend the key central city of Homs, Syria’s third largest, as insurgents approached its outskirts. The shock offensive began Nov. 27, during which gunmen captured the northern city of Aleppo, Syria’s largest, and the central city of Hama , the country’s fourth largest city. HTS leader Abu Mohammed al-Golani told CNN in an interview Thursday from Syria that the aim is to overthrow Assad’s government. The Britain-based Observatory said Syrian troops have withdrawn from much of the two southern provinces and are sending reinforcements to Homs, where a battle is looming. If the insurgents capture Homs, they would cut the link between Damascus, Assad’s seat of power, and the coastal region where the president enjoys wide support. The Syrian army said in a statement Saturday that it has carried out redeployment and repositioning in Sweida and Daraa after its checkpoints came under attack by “terrorists.” The army said it is setting up a “strong and coherent defensive and security belt in the area,” apparently to defend Damascus from the south. The Syrian government has referred to opposition gunmen as terrorists since conflict broke out in March 2011. After the fall of the cities of Daraa and Sweida early Saturday, Syrian government forces remained in control of five provincial capitals — Damascus, Homs and Quneitra, as well as Latakia and Tartus on the Mediterranean coast. Tartus is home to the only Russian naval base outside the former Soviet Union while Latakia is home to a major Russian air base. In the gas-rich nation of Qatar, the foreign ministers of Iran, Russia and Turkey met to discuss the situation in Syria. Turkey is a main backer of the rebels. Qatar's top diplomat, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, criticized Assad for failing to take advantage of the lull in fighting in recent years to address the country’s underlying problems. “Assad didn’t seize this opportunity to start engaging and restoring his relationship with his people,” he said. Sheikh Mohammed said he was surprised by how quickly the rebels have advanced and said there is a real threat to Syria’s “territorial integrity.” He said the war could “damage and destroy what is left if there is no sense of urgency” to start a political process. On Friday, U.S.-backed fighters of the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces captured wide parts of the eastern province of Deir el-Zour that borders Iraq as well as the provincial capital that carries the same name. The capture of areas in Deir el-Zour is a blow to Iran’s influence in the region as the area is the gateway to the corridor linking the Mediterranean to Iran, a supply line for Iran-backed fighters, including Lebanon’s Hezbollah. With the capture of a main border crossing with Iraq by the SDF and after opposition fighters took control of the Naseeb border crossing to Jordan in southern Syria, the Syrian government's only gateway to the outside world is the Masnaa border crossing with Lebanon. A massacre of more than 200 people in Haiti this month followed a gang-ordered manhunt that saw victims, many of them elderly, pulled from their homes and shot or killed with machetes, the UN said Monday. The victims were suspected of involvement in voodoo and accused by a gang leader of poisoning his child, with the suspects taken to a "training center" where many were dismembered or burned after being killed. A civil society organization had said at the time that the gang leader was convinced his son's illness was caused by followers of the religion. "On the evening of December 6, (Micanor Altes) ordered the members of his gang -- around 300 -- to carry out a brutal 'manhunt.' They stormed into about ten alleys of the (Port-au-Prince) neighborhood and forcibly dragged the victims out of their homes," said the report, authored jointly by the UN office in Haiti, BINUH, and the UN Human Rights Commissioner (OCHR). In the days that followed, the gang returned to the neighborhood, abducting adherents from a voodoo temple, targeting individuals suspected of tipping off local media and slaughtering people seeking to escape. Some of the bodies "were then burned with gasoline, or dismembered and dumped into the sea," the report concluded. A total of 134 men and 73 women were killed in total over six days, the report said. A mosaic of violent gangs control most of the Haitian capital Port-au-Prince. The impoverished Caribbean country has been mired for decades by political instability, made worse in recent years by gangs that have grown in strength and organizational sophistication. NASA has broken the record as its pioneering Parker solar probe made the closest-ever approach to the Sun on Christmas Eve. December 24 saw the Parker Solar Probe go within 3.8 million miles of the Sun’s surface at ground-breaking speeds of 430,000 miles per hour, NASA says. The spacecraft endured extreme temperatures and brutal radiation during its flight, meaning it was unable to communicate for several days. Parker flew through the star’s weakest atmosphere known as the corona, where it can reach scorching figures of 982C - the spacecraft relies on a carbon foam shield to protect it from the extreme heat. Nasa said: “Following its record-breaking closest approach to the sun, Nasa’s Parker Solar Probe has transmitted a beacon tone back to Earth indicating it’s in good health and operating normally.” A beacon tone received late on December 26 confirmed the spacecraft had made it through the encounter safely and is operating normally. This pass, planned to be the first of more to come at this distance, allows the spacecraft to conduct unrivaled scientific measurements with the potential to change our understanding of the Sun. Nicky Fox, who leads the Science Mission Directorate at NASA said: "Flying this close to the Sun is a historic moment in humanity’s first mission to a star.” She adds: “By studying the Sun up close, we can better understand its impacts throughout our solar system, including on the technology we use daily on Earth and in space, as well as learn about the workings of stars across the universe to aid in our search for habitable worlds beyond our home planet.” The space agency did not expect to hear from the probe until December 27, meaning it was able to complete the job faster than predicted. Parker has spent the last six years preparing for this moment as it used seven flybys of Venus to gravitationally direct it ever closer to the Sun. After launching in 2018, the probe’s last Venus flyby was on November 6 2024, where the spacecraft reached its optimal orbit.
