In a surprising development, the US Navy has released a Request for Information (RFI) regarding the development of a Nuclear-Armed Sea-Launched Cruise Missile (SLCM-N). The initiative aims to establish a modular and resilient cruise missile system that delivers a proportional response while ensuring essential adversary targets remain vulnerable. The goal is to deploy an operational system by fiscal year 2034, with prototype tests anticipated within the next three years. Sea-launched nuclear cruise missile The SLCM-N will be launched from Virginia-class attack submarines and is centered around an “All Up Round” (AUR) concept. This includes an expendable booster, a nuclear-capable cruise missile, and a launch canister, allowing underwater launches from Virginia Payload Tubes (VPT) or Virginia Payload Modules (VPM). Additionally, the Navy seeks missiles that are “as modular as possible,” incorporating both software and hardware, to ensure that modifications to the missile’s body or shared tactical systems don’t necessitate changes to the warhead payload interfaces or avionics related to the nuclear mission. “The open system approach is being adopted to facilitate future technical upgrades or technology enhancements as needed throughout the SLCM-N program’s lifespan,” the Navy’s request indicates. The United States originally introduced nuclear-armed sea-launched cruise missiles during the mid-1980s with the deployment of the TLAM-N, a nuclear variant of the Tomahawk Land-Attack Missile. These missiles, which had a range of about 2,500 kilometers (approximately 1,550 miles), were positioned on both surface vessels and attack submarines. After 3 decades In 1991, President George H.W. Bush declared the withdrawal of all sea-based tactical nuclear weapons, resulting in the removal of TLAM-N missiles by the middle of 1992. The Navy kept the option to redeploy them on attack submarines if necessary. However, in 2010, the Obama Administration recommended decommissioning the TLAM-N system, considering it redundant in light of other available nuclear capabilities. This retirement was finalized in 2013. The 2018 Nuclear Posture Review (NPR) under the Trump Administration advocated for the development of a novel nuclear-armed sea-launched cruise missile, now referred to as SLCM-N. This initiative aimed to provide a “non-strategic regional presence” and fulfill the need for “flexible and low-yield options” within the US nuclear arsenal. The SLCM-N was designed to enhance deterrence against regional threats and reassure US allies. Allocation of funds In its Fiscal Year 2022 budget proposal, the Biden Administration allocated funding for the research and development of the SLCM-N. Nonetheless, the 2022 NPR suggested discontinuing the program, indicating that current capabilities were adequate to meet deterrent requirements. Despite this, Congress continued to fund the SLCM-N and its associated warhead. The Fiscal Year 2024 National Defense Authorization Act required the executive branch to ensure the SLCM-N’s initial operational capability. Following this, the Administration has begun to take steps to implement the program. Supporters of the SLCM-N contend that it provides a flexible and survivable nuclear option capable of deployment in various regions without needing to station nuclear assets on allied territories. The SLCM-N would fulfill a critical role as a sea-based nuclear deterrent below the strategic level on the nuclear escalation ladder, emphasizing that the commander-in-chief should have access to such options. Similar to its predecessor, the Navy’s discontinued TLAM-N, the SLCM-N is envisioned as a lower-yield nuclear weapon launched from submarines that would add a new dimension to the maritime segment of the nuclear triad, allowing the United States to respond proportionately to a limited nuclear attack by an adversary.LAS VEGAS (AP) — Trae Young might be the NBA's biggest enigma. Young's fans can point to numbers and say he's an elite player. His detractors can point to numbers and say he's overrated. Both arguments have validity. To some, his cocky ways are endearing. To others, they're infuriating. This can't be argued: He's helping Atlanta author one of the season's surprise stories. The Hawks are in the NBA Cup semifinals, set to play Milwaukee on Saturday before the other semifinal between Oklahoma City and Houston. The title game is Tuesday night. “When we talk about Trae, the word I like to use is evolution,” Hawks coach Quin Snyder said. “And every player evolves. They just evolve in different ways. He's been an important part of our young guys' growth and being able to elevate them.” The Hawks haven't had a ton of big moments in Young's seven seasons. But he has shown a propensity for rising to the occasion: ousting New York in the 2021 playoffs, ousting the Knicks from the quarterfinals of this tournament to get to Las Vegas — and now comes another chance on national TV on Saturday, facing the Bucks with a chance to play for a trophy. “I feel like this team has been embracing the challenge each and every night from the beginning of the season,” Young said. “We haven’t looked too far ahead in any moment. We’re just taking it day by day. Even though early on in the season we may have had some struggles and some bumps in the road and some guys out, we stuck with the process and focus on each day." Here's part of the pro-Young argument: He's averaging 21 points and 12 assists something that only Magic Johnson and Isiah Thomas have done over a full season, and he's on pace to lead the league in assist average for the first time. Here's part of the anti-Young argument: Among the 220 players with at least 50 3-point attempts this season he ranks 189th at 30.8%, and of the 248 players with at least 100 field goal attempts this season he ranks 231st at 38.4%. Choose your side. They're both valid. But it's clear that Young — who made no secret that he was upset over not being picked for the team that won gold for USA Basketball at the Paris Olympics this past summer — is growing and maturing. “He’s doing a better job on both ends of the floor,” Bucks coach Doc Rivers said. “Defensively he’s figured out a way of keeping himself out of actions. I know that sounds easy. That’s hard to do, and he’s brilliant at it, he really is. ... He must be really studying the game on both ends of the floor, and you can see that in his play. And he’s earned the trust of his players. This team likes playing with him, that’s obvious. I couldn’t say that in the past, but now they love playing with him.” Hawks forward Jalen Johnson doesn't deny that point. “He’s so good, man,” Johnson said. "It’s crazy, like just seeing it in person and on TV prior to me playing with the Hawks and getting drafted by the Hawks, it was crazy just watching it. A guy that’s undersized, being able to score at will, being able to make any pass at will. And then next thing you know you’re his teammate and you’re on the receiving end of those passes. “Watching those clutch late game buckets, it’s a joy to watch. It’s a gift that he has that’s very special and not many people have had it at that elite of a level. It’s been great being his teammate. It’s been a blessing.” Saturday is an opportunity. The semifinals are the only games on the NBA calendar for that day; the title game Tuesday — which doesn't count in the standings — is the only game on the NBA slate that night as well. Young will have tons of eyeballs on him Saturday and would have tons more on him Tuesday if the Hawks find a way to win another big game against the Bucks. They're 3-1 against Eastern Conference-leading Cleveland and Boston already this season, 1-0 against Milwaukee. The potential is clear for the Hawks. The potential for Young has always been clear as well. Only now, it's starting to be realized. “The narrative about me not being able to do certain things or being too mad or frustrated about certain things is — I mean, just aren’t true,” Young said. "I think you’re just now being able to see like with the young team we have, just some of the different things we’ve been doing this year, I think just now you’re starting to kind of see it because the results are showing and we’re winning now. We’re here in this final four of the Cup, and it’s a big deal.” AP NBA: https://apnews.com/hub/NBA
49ers attempt to bounce back and boost their postseason chances as they visit Green BayHousebuilders should lower buyers' bills with solar panels on every roof, renewable energy charity and company chiefs have urged. The seven chief executives and directors have called on Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner and Energy Secretary Ed Miliband to back the Sunshine Bill when MPs debate it in the new year. If MPs back the draft legislation, which the Liberal Democrats' Max Wilkinson tabled for a debate on January 17, it would bake into law a standard for newbuilds to come with solar panels on their roofs. Mr Wilkinson said the proposal is "just really, really obvious" amid efforts to reduce carbon emissions and lower costs. "Taking this one simple step would pay back to new homeowners, via lower energy bills, in just a few short years, helping protect homeowners from high and fluctuating energy bills," according to the letter. It continued: "Pressure on the wider grid would be reduced and the likely outcome would be a reduction in the country's emissions too, in line with climate change targets." Its signatories, among them Ecotricity chief executive Asif Rehmanwala and E.On Next director of residential newbuild Matthew Hart, also wrote: "The twin crises of high energy bills and climate change present this country with many challenges, but there are also a number of solutions that could be relatively easily implemented." "One of those solutions is the inclusion of solar energy on newbuild residential accommodation." Mr Wilkinson said: "Following the shortest day of the year (Saturday), it's time the Government finally commits to a sunnier future." He told the PA news agency: "One of the things that I think is just really, really obvious is that when we're building new homes, they should be built to high standards of energy efficiency and that they should include renewable energy generation, because that's good for the planet, but also, it's really, really good for people's bills." "We all know that we've had the energy bills crisis over the last few years and fuel bills for households remain stubbornly high, so it seems obvious that we should put solar panels on the roofs of houses, so those bills are going to be lower." The MP for Cheltenham in Gloucestershire described adding solar panels to the tune of "a few thousand pounds" as "marginal" against the cost of building a property, which "pays back to the new homeowner within five or six years anyway, so it really is a win-win". Asked how far the Sunshine Bill formally known as the New Homes (Solar Generation) Bill could go in tackling climate change, Mr Wilkinson replied: "There are the big international impacts that you're talking about on climate change, but that doesn't mean that we shouldn't make those marginal gains locally where we can, particularly when they can have a really profound positive impact on people's day-to-day lives." He said: "All I want this Christmas is for the Government to support the Sunshine Bill. Lower energy bills would be the perfect gift not just for me, but for the nation." A Government spokesperson said in an October press release that they "want solar panels on as many new homes as possible, because they are a vital technology to help cut bills for families, boost our national energy security, and help deliver net zero". But the press release confirmed a final decision on the amount of solar panels that new homes will typically be expected to include is "yet to be made", and that it is "a fundamental principle of building regulations that we do not constrain innovation by prescribing any specific technology". Mr Miliband previously said he was "very sympathetic" to Mr Wilkinson's proposal. Asked about plans for "new homes to come with solar panels on the roof as standard", Mr Miliband told the Commons last Tuesday: "I am very, very sympathetic to this, and we are in discussions with our colleagues across Government and watch this space."

T.S. Selvavinayagam, Director of Public Health and Preventive Medicine, said in a release that the State’s requirement of Hepatitis B vaccine and Pentavalent vaccine for 2024-2025 was 9,73,100 and 29,20,100 doses respectively. At present, it has 5,19,000 and 4,63,000 doses of Hepatitis B and Pentavalent vaccines respectively. Under UIP, 11 vaccines were provided for protecting pregnant women and children against 12 vaccine-preventable diseases. Every year, 9.58 lakh pregnant women and 8.76 lakh children benefited under the programme in the State. Tamil Nadu continued to achieve immunisation coverage of 99%, he said. Hepatitis B vaccine, administered within 24 hours of birth, is also given as a part of the Pentavalent vaccine at six, 10 and 14 weeks after birth. In 2024-2025, Hepatitis B vaccine coverage stood at 99% (administered to 5.63 lakh of the 5.68 lakh babies born) and Pentavalent at 94% (administered to 5.47 lakh of 5.84 lakh children) from April to November. Measures were put in place to supply both the vaccines to 32 empanelled private hospitals through eVIN and U-WIN platforms. The director said that all District Health Officers were advised to administer all vaccines provided under UIP for free to the private hospitals and clinics in need. All PHCs and GHs had adequate stock of Hepatitis B and Pentavalent vaccines provided under UIP, he added. On Thursday, the Doctors’ Association for Social Equality had flagged the shortage of Hepatitis B vaccine in the last six months in government health facilities across the State. It noted that this was a nation-wide issue. Published - December 14, 2024 12:29 am IST Copy link Email Facebook Twitter Telegram LinkedIn WhatsApp Reddit health
Hunter Biden pardon seen as rebuke of Garland DOJS&P Dow Jones Indices Announces Dow Jones Sustainability Indices 2024 Review ResultsDONALD Trump has vowed to ban daylight saving time after a years-long battle to end the annoying tradition. Americans could finally have a permanent standard time once Trump takes office in January. The president-elect promised to try his best to make the change on Truth Social on Friday. "The Republican party will use its best efforts to eliminate daylight saving time, which has a small but strong constituency, but shouldn’t!" Trump wrote on Truth Social on Friday. "Daylight saving time is inconvenient, and very costly to our nation." The twice-yearly changing of the clocks has been controversial for decades, even prompting 45 states to try to ban the event in the past 10 years. DST, which started in 1918, begins on the second Sunday in March each year when clocks jump ahead by one hour. Clocks then fall back on the first Sunday in November. This isn't Trump's first time bringing up the issue - he also showed his support for a more consistent nationwide schedule five years ago. "Making Daylight Saving Time permanent is OK with me!" Trump tweeted during his presidency on March 11, 2019, one day after Americans lost their hour of sleep. A permanent time change would mean the US stays on summer hours all year long. Some states, including Arizona and Hawaii, already go by those rules. The majority of America observes the annual change, which was first implemented to save energy. Only Congress can change the DST observance. Trump joins states like Florida and Tennessee, which have already passed bills calling for a permanent time year-round. The US Senate also tried to fix the unpopular rule by unanimously passing the Sunshine Protection Act in March 2022, but the changes were stalled. The history of daylight saving time can be traced back to 1918. However, some states and territories do not observe the practice, including: State lawmakers aren't the only ones to call for the change. Vivek Ramaswamy and Elon Musk, who were both tapped to lead Trump's new Department of Government Efficiency, showed their support for banning DST just last month. "Looks like the people want to abolish the annoying time changes!" Musk wrote on X, which he owns. Ramaswamy responded , "It’s inefficient & easy to change." Donald Trump Jr. chimed in , saying, "Leave it daylight savings time always." Banning the clock change would come as great news to over two-thirds of Americans who want to ban DST, according to a YouGov poll . People dread DST because the change disrupts sleep and productivity, according to a recent survey of 2,000 Americans conducted by Talker Research. Survey results exposed that 40% of people start to feel a sense of dread, which some call the daylight saving scaries, about 11 days before the clocks move forward or fall back. The tense feeling reportedly doesn't leave people until about 13 days after the change. Only about a third of respondents said the sleep trade-off is worth it, which could be because 77% of people said they feel more energized when the sun is out.

(The Center Square) – Although it remains unclear how many Democratic Senators will vote for the 2025 National Defense Authorization Act, some House members in the party have explained why they voted yes, despite a controversial provision restricting military-funded transgender surgeries for minors. The nearly $900 billion bill passed the House 281-140 Wednesday, with 200 Republicans and 81 Democrats voting in favor versus 124 Democrats and 16 Republicans voting against it. Most of the NDAA consists of bipartisan agreements, such as pay raises for service members, strengthened ties with U.S. allies, and funding of new military technology. But a critical point of contention is a Republican addition that would prohibit the military’s health program from covering any gender dysphoria treatments on minors that could "result in sterilization.” The must-pass bill is so critical that nearly 40% of House Democrats voted in favor–but not without expressing their disappointment. Rep. Chrissy Houlahan, D-Pa., condemned Republican colleagues who, she said, “chose to sully this bill with political culture wars;” nevertheless, she voted in favor. “While it doesn't address everything we asked for and consider important, including the full ability of parents to make their own decisions about healthcare for their children, it marks a rare moment of productive bipartisan agreement on what is arguably the most crucial legislation we take up as a body each year,” Houlahan said. The bill’s provision does not forbid service members’ children from receiving transgender therapy. It forbids the military’s health insurance provider, TRICARE, from covering treatments on minors that “may result in sterilization.” Reps. Greg Landsman, D-Ohio, and Terri Sewell, D-Ala., also voted in favor of the bill despite their displeasure at the ban. “The NDAA is a hugely important bill. We had to pass it, which is why I voted yes,” Landsman posted on X Friday. “However, the anti-trans language that was attached to it was mean and awful and should never have been included.” “I have serious concerns about some remaining provisions that were placed in the bill for political purposes,” Sewell said Wednesday. “Still, the responsibility to support our service members and provide for our national security is one that I do not take lightly, which is why I ultimately chose to support the bill.” Besides the importance of annual military funding, another reason some House Democrats assented to the legislation is because they were successful in axing other House Republican amendments, such as a plan to eliminate reimbursements for service members who travel to obtain abortions. The Senate is expected to pass the bill within the next few days, after which President Joe Biden is expected to sign it into law.Analysis: Getting benched may have been best thing that happened to Bryce Young, Anthony Richardson

Kolkata: Senior West Bengal minister Firhad Hakim on Sunday said that the Centre should be held responsible for unabated illegal migration from Bangladesh. His assertion came in the wake of the BJP attacking the West Bengal government following the arrest of suspected Ansar-al-Islam Bangladesh members who were allegedly trying to spread the terror outfit's network in the eastern state. He was asked about reports that two of the eight arrested terrorists were working to set up a sleeper cell in Murshidabad district and one of them, a Bangladeshi national, had even procured fake identity card and passport to carry on subversive activities. "The onus lies with the Union Home Ministry which is helmed by Amit Shah . Why is he not taking steps to strengthen security along the Bangladesh border? Why is the Border Security Force not succeeding to stop infiltration of Bangladeshi nationals? "We have been repeatedly asking the Centre to step up border surveillance but it seems Shah is more busy belittling B R Ambedkar and flaunting his anti-Dalit mindset than stopping infiltration by forces that are a threat to the security of the country," Hakim told reporters on the sidelines of an event. Hakim was alluding to certain comments made by Shah in Parliament early this week which triggered a massive row and countrywide protests by opposition parties, including Congress and TMC, against Shah and the BJP. BJP's IT cell in-charge Amit Malviya said in a post on X, "Illegal infiltrators obtaining voting rights have become a significant part of the TMC's voter base, enabling their continued grip on power. Immediate and decisive action is essential to address this grave threat to democracy and national security." Claiming that West Bengal urgently needs a thorough revision and cleanup of its voter list to address alarming security and electoral integrity concerns, Malviya said, "Assam Police Special DGP Harmeet Singh has revealed that after a regime change in Bangladesh, the caretaker government released Jasimuddin Rahmani, leader of Al-Qaeda's South Asian affiliate, Ansarullah Bangla Team (ABT), from prison. Since then, Rahmani has ramped up efforts to expand ABT's operations in India, focusing on Assam and West Bengal to establish footholds and incite unrest across the region." "Currently, ABT's activities are concentrated in Murshidabad, where evidence links them to trafficking women into terror networks. Police have recently arrested eight terrorists associated with the group," Malviya said. "In a startling development, it was discovered that one of these terrorists, Shada Rati Sheikh, operating under the direction of Farhan Ishraq, right-hand man of Ansarul Bangla chief Jasimuddin Rahmani, holds voter ID cards for two separate constituencies -- Kandi and Hariharpara -- in Murshidabad, West Bengal... Notably, after the Khagragarh bomb blast involving Bangladeshi terrorists, she dismissed it as an RSS conspiracy, and her administration allegedly destroyed evidence under the then Bardhaman OC's supervision. This incident is just the tip of the iceberg," he alleged. Reacting to the allegations, TMC spokesperson Kunal Ghosh accused the BJP of politicising the serious issue of national security, forgetting the Centre's role in guarding the frontiers. He also commended the state police for tracking the terrorists and arresting them, busting the terror module with support from police forces of other states. On Friday, ADG Supratim Sarkar had told reporters that the duo was part of a group of eight people apprehended by West Bengal, Kerala and Assam Police. Inquiries revealed they had specific plans to target the 'chicken's neck corridor' in Siliguri which connects Northeast with the rest of the country, Sarkar had said. Sarkar also pointed out that Murshidabad had become a transit route for members of banned Bangladeshi outfits like Ansar-al-Islam.
