Kurtis Rourke has made the Jon Cornish Trophy a family affair. The Indiana quarterback received the award Monday, which is presented annually to the top Canadian playing football in the NCAA. Rourke's older brother, Nathan, currently with the CFL's B.C. Lions, won the award twice in 2017 and 2018 at Ohio. "It's awesome," Rourke said. "Kind of getting introduced to the Jon Cornish Trophy back when Nathan won it a couple of times, I wanted to be able to have a shot and it was one of my goals to be in the conversation, be in the running. "It just means a ton to be recognized just because Canadian athletes don't get recognized too often. I'm just so glad we're able to get that recognition and continue to do it for our country." Rourke finished first in voting ahead of Montreal's Dariel Djabome, a junior linebacker at Rutgers. Stanford receiver Elic Ayomanor, last year's winner, was third, followed by Vancouver's Ty Benefield (sophomore safety, Boise State) and Jett Elad of Mississauga, Ont., a senior safety at UNLV. Cornish, of New Westminster, B.C., was a standout running back at Kansas who went on to have a decorated CFL career with the Calgary Stampeders (2007-15) before being inducted into the Canadian Football Hall of Fame in 2019. Rourke transferred to Indiana last December to boost his NFL draft stock after five years at Ohio, where he began as a backup to his older brother. The junior Rourke then captured the '22 MAC offensive player of the year award despite suffering a season-ending knee injury before heading to Indiana after the 2023 season. Rourke was instrumental in Indiana — traditionally known as a basketball school — emerging as a Big Ten contender in head coach Curt Cignetti’s first season. After winning 11 of their first 12 games, the Hoosiers' stellar campaign ended with a 27-17 loss to Notre Dame in the opening game of the expanded U.S. college football playoff bracket. Rourke finished 20-of-33 passing for 215 yards with two touchdowns and an interception in that contest. Overall, Rourke completed 222 of 320 passes (69.4 per cent) for 3,042 yards with 29 TDs and five interceptions. "What a privilege, opportunity to come join a program that had so much to prove," Rourke said. "It kind of aligned with what I was wanting to do, which was prove I could play at a higher level." The six-foot-five, 223-pound Rourke was named a finalist for the Manning Award, presented annually to the NCAA's top quarterback. He was also ninth in voting for the Heisman Trophy as U.S. college football's outstanding player. "College football has been everything to me," Rourke said. "Starting off my freshman year to be able to watch Nathan grow and play in his senior year and just learn from him in both how to live a college life but also be a college quarterback as well. "I won't forget my time at Ohio at all, it really created me and moulded me into the person, player I am. I’m extremely grateful for the entire college football experience." The former Holy Trinity star becomes just the second Canadian high school graduate to claim the Jon Cornish Trophy. Chuba Hubbard, of Sherwood Park, Alta., and currently with the NFL's Carolina Panthers, did so in 2019 while at Oklahoma State. The six-foot-two, 240-pound Djabome recorded 102 tackles (48 solo), three sacks and two forced fumbles this season. Rutgers faces Kansas State in the Rate Bowl on Boxing Day. The six-foot-two, 210-pound Ayomanor, a redshirt junior, was one of the few bright spots this season for Stanford (3-9). He registered 63 catches for 831 yards and six TDs after recording 62 receptions for 1,013 yards and six touchdowns in 2023. Last week, Ayomanor declared for the '25 NFL draft. The six-foot-two, 204-pound Benefield led Boise State in tackles (73), solo tackles (53) and interceptions (two) while also registering five tackles for a loss, a forced fumble and two recoveries. The Broncos are the third seed in U.S. college football's expanded playoffs and face Penn State in the Fiesta Bowl on Dec. 31. Elad registered 55 tackles, an interception and six pass knockdowns during the regular season. He added 12 tackles (nine solo) and a sack in the Runnin' Rebels' 24-13 win over Cal in the Art of Sport LA Bowl to finish with an 11-3 overall record. Google has recently rolled out a redesigned music player for all apps on Android Auto, including popular services like Spotify and Apple Music. The latest update, Android Auto 13.4, has been gradually released over the past week, introducing some of the most significant changes to the platform in quite some time. One of the most noticeable updates in Android Auto 13.4 is the revamped music player. Previously, all audio apps shared a consistent design to ensure drivers did not have to relearn the layout for each app, promoting safety on the road. However, the latest update has brought a fresh look to the music player interface. The new design relocates the album art to the left side of the screen, creating more space for the track progress bar, which displays the track title, artist, and time. The text size has been slightly reduced to accommodate the changes. Additionally, the buttons have been expanded to occupy the full width of the display, maintaining a familiar layout for users. The most significant alteration is the repositioning of the track progress bar, enhancing the overall user experience. While the screenshots showcase Spotify, the redesign is expected to apply to all audio apps on Android Auto. The updated design also features the new Android Auto font, which has been recently implemented. These changes hint at Google's upcoming "Car Media" update, which is anticipated to enable Android Auto to play local media, including radio stations. Despite these improvements, the new features are not yet live in the current update. COMMENTS Comments are moderated and generally will be posted if they are on-topic and not abusive. WASHINGTON (AP) — President Joe Biden said Sunday that the U.S. government believes missing American journalist Austin Tice, who disappeared 12 years ago near the Syrian capital, is alive and that Washington is committed to bringing him home after Bashar Assad’s ouster from power in Damascus. “We think we can get him back,” Biden told reporters at the White House, while acknowledging that “we have no direct evidence” of his status. “Assad should be held accountable.” Biden said officials must still identify exactly where Tice is after his disappearance in August 2012 at a checkpoint in a contested area west of Damascus. “We’ve remained committed to returning him to his family,” he said. Tice, who is from Houston and whose work had been published by The Washington Post, McClatchy newspapers and other outlets. A video released weeks after Tice went missing showed him blindfolded and held by armed men and saying, “Oh, Jesus.” He has not been heard from since. that it was holding him. The United States has no new evidence that Tice is alive, but continues to operate under the assumption he is alive, according to a U.S. official. The official, who was not authorized to comment publicly and spoke on condition of anonymity, said the U.S. will continue to work to identify where he is and to try to bring him home. His mother, Debra, said at a news conference Friday in Washington that the family had information from a “significant source,” whom she did not identify, establishing that her son was alive. “He is being cared for and he is well — we do know that,” she said. The Tice family met this past week with officials at the State Department and the White House. “To everyone in Syria that hears this, please remind people that we’re waiting for Austin,” Debra Tice said in comments that hostage advocacy groups spread on social media Sunday. “We know that when he comes out, he’s going to be fairly dazed & he’s going to need lots of care & direction. Direct him to his family please!”Jeremy Clarkson has revealed his true incentive for purchasing a farm - indicating he thought it would offer a "better PR story if I said I bought it to avoid paying tax". The mind behind the immensely popular Amazon Prime series, 'Clarkson's Farm', ignored medical advice to join a protest against changes to agricultural inheritance tax implemented by the Labour government, marching with numerous farmers in London on Tuesday. Speaking to The Times back in 2021, Clarkson pointed out that dodging inheritance tax was "the critical thing" propelling him to acquire land. Additionally, he had expressed on the Top Gear website in 2010: "I have bought a farm. There are many sensible reasons for this: Land is a better investment than any bank can offer. The government doesn't get any of my money when I die. And the price of the food that I grow can only go up." Revisiting those remarks in a fresh interview with The Times, the ex-Top Gear host confessed: "I never did admit why I really bought it. I wanted to have a shoot - I was very naïve. I just thought it would be a better PR story if I said I bought it to avoid paying tax." Chancellor Rachel Reeves has proclaimed that from April 2025, combined business and agricultural assets exceeding £1 million would encounter a 50 per cent inheritance tax reprieve, effectively settling at a rate of 20 per cent, reports the Express . The move signalled a shift away from Agricultural Property Relief (APR), a measure aimed at easing the tax pressure on farmers, preventing them from having to sell off income-generating assets to afford the costs. Properties valued under £1 million remain exempt from inheritance tax. Despite his strong opposition to the tax amendments, Clarkson told the press he doesn't wish to become the figurehead of the campaign, stating: "It should be led by farmers." He expressed that although he doesn't see himself as a farmer, he believes his role is to "report on farming" and highlight the issue of rural poverty within the sector. "One of the problems we have on the show is we're not showing the poverty either, because obviously on Diddly Squat, there isn't any poverty," he said. "But trust me, there is absolute poverty. I'm surrounded by farmers. I'm not going out for dinner with James Dyson. It's people with 200 acres, 400 acres. Way past Rachel Reeves' threshold. They are f*****." When questioned about potentially pursuing a political career, Clarkson dismissed the idea, saying: "I'd be a terrible political leader, hopeless. I'm a journalist at heart, I prefer throwing rocks at people than having them thrown at me." On Friday, Sir Keir Starmer reaffirmed his government's commitment to supporting farmers and pensioners amidst discussions on tax reforms and the decision to restrict winter fuel payments to only the most financially vulnerable pensioners. The Prime Minister, speaking to BBC Bristol, outlined his commitment to various sectors of society: "We're for working people who need to be better off, who've really struggled over recent years." He emphasised support for the health sector, saying, "We're for everybody who wants to and needs to rely on the NHS, which is on its knees, and we've got to pick it up and we will and get those waiting lists down." On housing issues, he added, "We're for the people who absolutely need somewhere safe and secure to live that they can afford. All of that has to be paid for." The Prime Minister also expressed support for farmers and pensioners, stating, "We are also for the farmers and the pensioners." Additionally, he reiterated his stance on agricultural policy, confirming that "the vast majority of farms will be 'completely unaffected' by changes to agricultural inheritance tax."
