To contribute, click here . ••• Although America’s divisive presidential election is now behind us, casting votes did not do much to heal our country’s deep philosophical and political divides. We remain a polarized people, with about half the nation pleased about the electoral outcome and the other half perplexed by it. In a healthy democracy, there will always be vigorous debate and disagreement about what policy prescriptions are best for our cities, states and nation — and who is best equipped to lead them. A consensus is always hard to find in a country as geographically, racially and socioeconomically diverse as ours. But self-rule requires societal self-assessment. And an honest reflection on the worrying level of political enmity that exists today reveals we must do better for American democracy to thrive. The hostility on both sides of the aisle is not conducive to a free society functioning well, as it makes substantive discourse between disagreeing parties impossible and instills fear in many that exercising First Amendment rights will get them in trouble at home or at work. Democracy requires reflection, rigor and reason. It calls us to be calm, attentive and courteous. All things sorely lacking in recent ballot box contests. So how can this caustic political climate be reset? One potential simple solution: friendship. When we hold true friends who vote differently from the way we do, we can empathize with what motivates those on the other side of causes we care about. And that understanding allows for a more thoughtful approach to and investigation of our own views. By humanizing our public policy adversaries, politically diverse relationships help hold us back from using the cheapest and most destructive partisan tool: demonizing the opposition. My own anecdotal observations along with recent studies confirm that Americans are more and more segregating their relationships based on politics. An Axios poll of young adults revealed 33% of respondents would “definitely not” or “probably not” befriend someone who voted for a different presidential nominee. And according to a study by the Survey Center on American Life, 15% of people torpedoed acquaintances over political disagreements alone. It’s not hard to understand this troubling trend. Life can be a lot easier if one silos among people who see the world the same way. Let’s be honest: It’s gratifying to have our views affirmed and much harder to have them challenged. It’s effortless just to reject the political opposition as morally reprehensible and much more difficult to impersonally advocate one’s ideas with good argument and data instead. But failing to interact on a personal level with people we disagree with coarsens our politics, eliminates the philosophical and factual accountability that comes from respectful disagreement and makes us too strident with each other. Conservatives are a rare breed in my hometown of St. Paul, and if I chose my friendships based on partisan leanings I’d be a very lonely guy. But most of my best friends and neighbors here are dyed-in-the-wool Democrats. They are smart and well informed, and they deepen and enrich my own views by arguing their side of things with me. We listen to and learn from one another — and even though our minds are rarely changed, our opinions are refined for the better. But, more importantly, my left-of-center friends in the Saintly City are interesting, kind and of good character. How foolish it would be to cut such people out of my life simply because they vote differently. And I am grateful they keep me in theirs. While maintaining friendships across party lines sounds like a good idea in theory, it can be tough work. It requires of us a decision to love each other even in the face of disagreement and to honor our friends’ right to freedom of speech and thought. And while we can confront our friends’ views and preferred political candidates, we also must be willing to be the one who is challenged and to welcome such confrontation. A bipartisan friendship commands intellectual humility and leaves open the idea that we might be wrong. If one cannot do this and lacks friendships with significant political differences, it’s strong evidence one is an ideologue, which is not a good thing to be. Philosophically intolerant dogmatists have trouble getting along with those they conflict with on matters of political profundity. That type of intolerant attitude does not work well in a system of self-government that requires a free flow of ideas and discourse. And it’s an unhealthy and unhelpful characteristic to have if one wants to be productive and happy in a pluralistic society. “Everyone notionally understands his or her own fallibility,” the conservative Princeton Prof. Robert P. George, who enjoys a well-known and close friendship with Democratic Socialist Cornel West, wrote in a recent social media post. “But notionally isn’t enough. The test comes when someone disagrees with you about something you regard as profoundly important — when someone dissents from your deepest, most cherished, even identity-forming beliefs ... It takes genuine strength of character and courage — truly, and not merely notionally, to recognize our fallibility. Fellow truth-seekers can be friends because they recognize their own fallibility and are willing to be challenged, as well as to challenge. They’re eager to learn from each other. Unlike ideologues, they don’t allow infatuation with their own opinions to impede pursuit of truth.” Don’t we all want to be truth-seekers? Dogmatism seems like a downer. Sunny Hostin, the liberal-leaning co-host of the television program “The View,” encouraged her Democratic viewers to cut off contact with family and friends that voted the other way during the upcoming holidays. What daft advice. Our relationships with loved ones should always surmount politics, no matter what. And we can all help unite our fractured nation after this bruising election by committing to respectfully engage with those we disagree with and listen more earnestly to ideas we do not like. NEW YORK (AP) — There's no place like home for the holidays. And that may not necessarily be a good thing. In the wake of the very contentious and divisive 2024 presidential election, the upcoming celebration of Thanksgiving and the ramp-up of the winter holiday season could be a boon for some — a respite from the events of the larger world in the gathering of family and loved ones. Hours and even days spent with people who have played the largest roles in our lives. Another chapter in a lifetime of memories. That's one scenario. For others, that same period — particularly because of the polarizing presidential campaign — is something to dread. There is the likelihood of disagreements, harsh words, hurt feelings and raised voices looming large. Those who make a study of people and their relationships to each other in an increasingly complex 21st-century say there are choices that those with potentially fraught personal situations can make — things to do and things to avoid — that could help them and their families get through this time with a minimum of open conflict and a chance at getting to the point of the holidays in the first place. For those who feel strongly about the election's outcome, and know that the people they would be spending the holiday feel just as strongly in the other direction, take the time to honestly assess if you're ready to spend time together in THIS moment, barely a few weeks after Election Day — and a time when feelings are still running high. The answer might be that you're not, and it might be better to take a temporary break, says Justin Jones-Fosu, author of “I Respectfully Disagree: How to Have Difficult Conversations in a Divided World.” “You have to assess your own readiness,” he says, “Each person is going be very different in this.” He emphasizes that it's not about taking a permanent step back. “Right now is that moment that we’re talking about because it’s still so fresh. Christmas may be different.” Keep focused on why why you decided to go in the first place, Jones-Fosu says. Maybe it’s because there’s a relative there you don’t get to see often, or a loved one is getting up in age, or your kids want to see their cousins. Keeping that reason in mind could help you get through the time. If you decide getting together is the way to go, but you know politics is still a dicey subject, set a goal of making the holiday a politics-free zone and stick with it, says Karl Pillemer, a professor at Cornell University whose work includes research on family estrangement. “Will a political conversation change anyone’s mind?" he says. “If there is no possibility of changing anyone’s mind, then create a demilitarized zone and don’t talk about it.” Let’s be honest. Sometimes, despite best efforts and intentions to keep the holiday gathering politics- and drama-free, there’s someone who’s got something to say and is going to say it. In that case, avoid getting drawn into it, says Tracy Hutchinson, a professor in the graduate clinical mental health counseling program at the College of William & Mary in Virginia. “Not to take the hook is one of the most important things, and it is challenging,” she says. After all, you don’t have to go to every argument you’re invited to. If you risk getting caught up in the moment, consider engaging in what Pillemer calls “forward mapping.” This involves thinking medium and long term rather than just about right now — strategy rather than tactics. Maybe imagine yourself six months from now looking back on the dinner and thinking about the memories you'd want to have. “Think about how you would like to remember this holiday,” he says. “Do you want to remember it with your brother and sister-in-law storming out and going home because you’ve had a two-hour argument?” Things getting intense? Defuse the situation. Walk away. And it doesn't have to be in a huff. Sometimes a calm and collected time out is just what you — and the family — might need. Says Hutchinson: “If they do start to do something like that, you could say, `I’ve got to make this phone call. I’ve got to go to the bathroom. I’m going to take a walk around the block.'"The S&P 500 should continue its bull rally into 2025, according to strategist Ryan Detrick. Historically, the S&P 500 often sees further gains after consecutive years of more than 20% returns. A strong economy and rising corporate profits support a bullish stock market outlook. The S&P 500 surged 26% in 2023 and is on track for a 27% gain in 2024. While it may seem like 2025 has a tough act to follow, Carson Group chief market strategist Ryan Detrick says the odds are pretty high that another year of big gains is ahead for investors. In a Monday note, Detrick highlighted that history suggests stocks will likely extend their bull rally next year and deliver returns higher than their average annual return of about 10%. "The bears might be disappointed to find that strong returns after back-to-back 20% years is perfectly normal," Detrick said. Since 1950, there have been eight times the S&P 500 gains 20% or more two years in a row. In six of those eight times, the third year saw positive gains, with an overall average and median return of 12% and 13%, respectively. "The bottom line is up 20% two years in a row actually suggests the potential for better than average returns in 2025, something we are on record in expecting next year," Detrick said. The fundamental reasons behind Detrick's bullish view on the stock market next year include an overall solid economy and rising corporate profits. "When you have an economy that continues to surprise to the upside, you tend to have solid earnings," Detrick said, adding that the S&P 500's earnings per share is expected to hit $269 next year, up 19% from early 2023. "There is no holy grail when it comes to investing, but when we saw earnings estimates making new highs, we took it as a big reason to be overweight equities and still do," Detrick said. Finally, Detrick said that "bull markets last longer than you think" with an average age of 5-and-a-half years. Unlike scores of people who scrambled for the blockbuster drugs Ozempic and Wegovy to lose weight in recent years, Danielle Griffin had no trouble getting them. The 38-year-old information technology worker from New Mexico had a prescription. Her pharmacy had the drugs in stock. And her health insurance covered all but $25 to $50 of the monthly cost. Recommended Videos For Griffin, the hardest part of using the new drugs wasn’t access. It was finding out that the much-hyped medications didn’t really work for her. “I have been on Wegovy for a year and a half and have only lost 13 pounds,” said Griffin, who watches her diet, drinks plenty of water and exercises regularly. “I’ve done everything right with no success. It’s discouraging.” In clinical trials, most participants taking Wegovy or Mounjaro to treat obesity lost an average of 15% to 22% of their body weight — up to 50 pounds or more in many cases. But roughly 10% to 15% of patients in those trials were “nonresponders” who lost less than 5% of their body weight. Now that millions of people have used the drugs, several obesity experts told The Associated Press that perhaps 20% of patients — as many as 1 in 5 — may not respond well to the medications. It's a little-known consequence of the obesity drug boom, according to doctors who caution eager patients not to expect one-size-fits-all results. “It's all about explaining that different people have different responses,” said Dr. Fatima Cody Stanford, an obesity expert at Massachusetts General Hospital The drugs are known as GLP-1 receptor agonists because they mimic a hormone in the body known as glucagon-like peptide 1. Genetics, hormones and variability in how the brain regulates energy can all influence weight — and a person's response to the drugs, Stanford said. Medical conditions such as sleep apnea can prevent weight loss, as can certain common medications, such as antidepressants, steroids and contraceptives. “This is a disease that stems from the brain,” said Stanford. “The dysfunction may not be the same” from patient to patient. Despite such cautions, patients are often upset when they start getting the weekly injections but the numbers on the scale barely budge. “It can be devastating,” said Dr. Katherine Saunders, an obesity expert at Weill Cornell Medicine and co-founder of the obesity treatment company FlyteHealth. “With such high expectations, there’s so much room for disappointment.” That was the case for Griffin, who has battled obesity since childhood and hoped to shed 70 pounds using Wegovy. The drug helped reduce her appetite and lowered her risk of diabetes, but she saw little change in weight. “It’s an emotional roller coaster,” she said. “You want it to work like it does for everybody else.” The medications are typically prescribed along with eating behavior and lifestyle changes. It’s usually clear within weeks whether someone will respond to the drugs, said Dr. Jody Dushay, an endocrine specialist at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. Weight loss typically begins right away and continues as the dosage increases. For some patients, that just doesn't happen. For others, side effects such as nausea, vomiting and diarrhea force them to halt the medications, Dushay said. In such situations, patients who were counting on the new drugs to pare pounds may think they’re out of options. “I tell them: It's not game over,” Dushay said. Trying a different version of the new class of drugs may help. Griffin, who didn't respond well to Wegovy, has started using Zepbound, which targets an additional hormone pathway in the body. After three months of using the drug, she has lost 7 pounds. “I'm hoping it's slow and steady,” she said. Other people respond well to older drugs, the experts said. Changing diet, exercise, sleep and stress habits can also have profound effects. ALIENS might be living among us here on Earth - and they believe they can protect us from a galactic war. Someone who calls themself a "starseed" is a human who believes they were aliens in a past life before arriving on Earth stuck in a human body, and The Sun has learnt all about them. Experts told The Sun that some starseeds believe there is currently a war between good and bad aliens in a galaxy unreachable to us. It means some starseeds might align themselves with either the good side or the bad side. The idea was originated by Brad Steiger in his 1976 book Gods of Aquarius. They claim to channel human lifeforms and suffer helplessness and total amnesia concerning their identity, origins and life purpose. read more in aliens It is not known exactly how many people identify as starseeds, because many choose to keep this part of themselves private. Those involved with the world of starseeds explained that they are more likely to relate to something like Star Wars than to real life . Dr Susannah Crockford, an anthropology lecturer at the University of Exeter, said a key reason why people identify as starseeds is because they don't feel like they belong. She told The Sun: "Most of the starseeds I met were very on their own. Most read in The Sun "Some of them would explicitly say that there was a war between these good and bad aliens, and that they were on the side of the good. "They would relate it to something like Star Wars and say that was in fact real. "Not literally real, but the idea that there are star systems at war with each other. So it gave them a sense of mission and purpose. "There are still bad aliens, often these are called 'Reptilians'. "So there are the bad aliens, and then there are the good aliens. "And most, in fact all of the Starseeds I met said that they were on the side of the good aliens. "They said they came from planets such as Sirius, or Lyra, Pleiades was a common one, Arcturus. "These are quite distant stars from our solar system, we don't really know what's on there, and we have no real knowledge of what these planets are, so you can sort of speculate as to what is there. "They were part of something much more important than what they may be doing in their everyday life. "They actually had something far more exciting going on in their life, which was being a starseed." STARSEED CULT CONTROVERSY In some cases, notable influencers in the starseed space have been accused of using their worldview to "brainwash" people. In an article for Vice in 2016, Leigh Alexander recounted her experience with Unicole Unicron, who is the leader of UNICULT. Unicole also runs a TikTok with over 120,000 followers, in which she makes content based around her experiences as an alien. Unicole describes UNICULT as a way to help others see the light after her suicide attempt made her realise that she is the belief that she is an incarnation of a divine being of light helped her heal. She decided to join the group, which required her to give a drop of her blood as part of an initiation. One of the most revealing parts of the article is the internal structure that holds starseeds together, including Unicole, blind faith. Leigh pointed that in Unicole's world, belief is all it takes to make something real. Leigh wrote: "Her music videos only have a few thousand views, a liberal interpretation of pop stardom, but the more I read about UNICULT, the more I realized that that’s kind of the point—belief makes real, Unicole Unicron reminds us. "If she says she is a pop star, she is a pop star." Rolling Stone reported in 2021 that Unicole was allegedly offering members religious exemption from taking the Covid vaccine. The publication labelled her as "anti-vax". TOM THE ALIEN In June 2024, Kelly Tyler went on This Morning and claimed that she is a starseed who healed from long term sickness, after she swapped souls with a ‘walk in alien’ when she was just a child. She says she's been able to "astral travel" and can leave her earthly body on command, transporting herself to a galaxy far, far away, where she meets up with blue aliens. Kelly told the programme: "When I was a child I wasn't born as a starseed. I was a very sensitive child... I was quite an ill child, and also the world was too sensitive for me. "I would be at the bottom of my garden, with a bug box looking at stuff rather than interacting with people because it felt too much." She went onto recount how she first came into contact with a spiritual entity, who she calls "Tom". "I developed a relationship, or had contact, with this being from at age of seven at the bottom of my garden. "He appeared as a light and then started to show himself more, and we just used to have this really comforting telepathic relationship. "About a year later I developed whooping cough and I got really really ill, to the fact that I lost all my weight, and the doctors said she's not gonna make it. "At that time, myself and this being exchanged souls. "It's not a possession of somebody taking over, it's a mutual agreement that we decided to exchange souls. "I don't have any real emotional memory of being pre-eight years old, and my personality ,and my physicality changed. "I went from actually being not that clever to being able to do stuff. "I ended up passing an entrance exam for a private school...my social skills improved and I became less shy and introverted. "Lots of significant changes happened, and nobody can really understand why." A WIDER PURPOSE Dr Susannah went onto add that starseeds are seeking a wider purpose: "They were all motivated by a sense that they were seeking something larger than themselves, some sort of wider mission, something else that would account for these various feelings that they had. "They didn't quite fit in, they weren't really like everyone else. "Partly it was driven by a sense of alienation from their wider culture, that these were people who for various reasons felt like they didn't really fit in with mainstream American culture." Since 1 January of this year, all freight payers have been able to use it, so the time has now come to take stock of the situation. For Railport and Port of Antwerp-Bruges, the aim is to improve the quality of rail transport. The rail vision drawn up in collaboration with Infrabel contains a number of measures that will help to achieve that. Bundling the traffic of single railcars (Single Wagon Load) in the port area is one of them. Bundling means that Railport organises a “group purchase” for transportation within the port, which is referred to as the first/last mile. In return for the established price, participating firms can then have railcars picked up and taken to a marshalling yard, or delivered to them from a marshalling yard. After ten months of bundling, participating freight payers are now benefiting from an improved quality of rail transportation in the port area. For many of them, the price for this their first/last mile is also lower than what they were paying before. For the terminals, bundling greatly simplifies matters – they now have a single point of contact for all rail transport between the terminal and the marshalling yard.
