VANCOUVER, British Columbia (AP) — Brayden Point scored twice and added two assists, and the Tampa Bay Lightning edged the Vancouver Canucks 4-2 on Sunday. Nikita Kucherov had a goal and two helpers for the Lightning, while Jake Guentzel scored on a power play late in the third period. Captain Quinn Hughes and Kiefer Sherwood found the back of the net for the Canucks. Tampa Bay’s Andrei Vasilevskiy stopped 22 of the 24 shots he faced and Kevin Lankinen made 28 saves for Vancouver. Lightning: Kucherov, who returned to the lineup Sunday after missing two games with a lower-body injury, added another potent piece to Tampa’s red-hot power play. The Lightning were 2 for 4 with the man advantage and scored a power-play goal for the sixth straight game. Canucks: Hughes took a stick to the face 55 seconds into the game, missed more than 11 minutes, then returned to open the scoring 16:08 into the first period. It was the 50th goal of the defenseman’s career and extended his points streak to seven games with three goals and 10 assists across the stretch. Tampa took the lead 6:29 into the second when Kucherov sliced a pass to Point at the bottom of the faceoff circle and the Lightning winger blasted it in past Lankinen for his 17th of the season. Kucherov put the visitors on the board just a minute and 49 seconds earlier. Point scored his league-leading 10th power-play goal of the season. He’s one away from becoming the third player to score 100 power-play goals for the Lightning. The Canucks continue a six-game homestand Tuesday against the St. Louis Blues. The Lightning visit the Oilers on Tuesday. AP NHL: https://www.apnews.com/hub/NHLTHIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Major political parties are going through a tough phase in Kerala following the ups and downs suffered in the recently finished by-polls. CPM blamed Congress for taking votes from extremist parties to win Palakkad while CPI blamed CPM’s inept work for the loss in Wayanad. Congress workers have started mudslinging over the loss in Chelakkara while things are falling apart in BJP over a humiliating defeat in the highly influential Palakkad constituency. CPM leaders are interpreting Rahul Mamkootathil's victory as ‘dangerous’ as they alleged Congress joined forces with SDPI and Jamaat-e-Islami. The fact that neither the Congress leadership nor the candidate rejected the SDPI's victory rally in Palakkad speaks volumes about the complicit nature. Meanwhile, some sections within CPM opposed the party narrative of indirectly blaming almost 45,000 Muslim voters in Palakkad to be favouring religious extremism. Meanwhile, some also believe CM Pinarayi Vijayan’s direct attack on IUML state president Panakkad Syed Sadiq Ali Shihab Thangal' to distance Muslim voters from the party. BJP has a better organizational system in Palakkad, so it remains a shocker for many to admit that the party faced defeat by nearly 20,000 votes. BJP going behind by 4590 votes in the municipal council's stronghold was salt to the injury. K Surendran is facing the wrath of members, while his ‘numero uno’ V Muraleedharan also evaded the media from responding to the Palakkad defeat. Meanwhile, the defeat in Chelakkara has caused some within Congress to turn against the leadership. Many have raised questions about the leadership selecting Ramya Haridas as the ideal candidate just five months after she faced defeat in the LS polls. In Wayanad, Sathyan Mokeri secured 71000 less than what Annie Raja got in the 2024 LS polls. CPI alleged non-cooperation from CPM and lack of funds to be behind the defeat.

The two policemen along with another colleague were travelling from north Kashmir's Sopore to the Subsidary Training Centre (STC), Talwara, in Reasi district of Jammu region when the incident took place. The bullet-riddled bodies of the two cops were seen lying inside a police van near the Kali Mata temple in Rehembal area of Udhampur around 6.30 am. Officials said the head constable opened fire at the driver over some argument before ending his own life. A selection grade constable, who was also travelling in the vehicle, escaped unhurt and is being questioned, they said. Udhampur SSP Amod Ashok Nagpure said the accused used his AK 47 assault rifle in the firing. "They were posted in Sopore and belonged to Kashmir. The accused constable shot dead his colleague before killing himself," the officer said. "Initial probe reveals it is a case of fratricide and suicide," police said. Barron Trump 'hardly exists' and is 'desperate to make friends' at NYUFLORENCE, Italy (AP) — Inter Milan beat Como 2-0 to cement third place in Serie A and close the gap on top two Atalanta and Napoli on Monday. Carlos Augusto got the opener when he headed home a corner kick in the 48th minute. Marcus Thuram scored the second in stoppage time with a potent strike into the roof of the net. It was the first time these teams have played each other in the top division since 2003 and although Inter had lost only one league game all season it struggled to impose itself on 15th-placed Como. However, it won without exerting itself and the three points were enough to take Simone Inzaghi’s men within three points of leader Atalanta and within one of Napoli. Inter has a game in hand over both clubs. Fiorentina misses chance to rise Fiorentina missed a chance to go fourth when it lost at home to Udinese 2-1. The Florence club won a record eight consecutive Serie A games before losing to Bologna 1-0 on Dec. 15, and it looked to be back on track when Moises Kean converted a penalty after eight minutes to become the first Fiorentina player to reach double figures in the league since Federico Chiesa in the 2019-20 season. However, Udinese was a different prospect after the break. Lorenzo Lucca equalized with the aid of sloppy defending four minutes into the second half and then Florian Thauvin found space on the edge of the box to curl in the second eight minutes later. The result left Udinese in ninth place and Fiorentina in fifth. The match was a special one for Edoardo Bove, the Fiorentina player whose collapse with a heart issue led to the suspension of its game with Inter Milan on Dec. 1. Bove was fitted with a defibrillator implant soon after and sat on the Fiorentina bench for the first time since his collapse. He is not allowed to play but his position on the sideline alongside coach Raffaele Palladino was seen as a step towards normality for the 22-year-old midfielder. ___ AP soccer: https://apnews.com/hub/soccer The Associated PressBUFFALO, N.Y.
